It’s not every day that someone tries to pin a murder on you and a random girl you just met. But Bram Crow isn’t your average, everyday guy, either.

One second, he’s hiding evidence with the girl, and the next, he has to marry her so a police detective doesn’t get suspicious.

Did he mention that he had a long-term girlfriend at the time?

To say that things didn’t go as planned would be an understatement.

To say that falling in love with his wife definitely wasn’t part of the plan either.

Nor was her leaving him when he finally realized she was his world.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

Are girls called ‘chicks’ because they produce eggs, or love cocks?

-Dory’s secret thoughts

DORY

Eight years old

The dirt was making me itch.

I could see a fine sheen of it on my hands, and I knew that I needed a shower three days ago.

Yet, I’d still been sent to school, with not only dirty hands but dirty clothes.

I was embarrassed.

I’d been embarrassed for a year now, since I realized how much different I was from other people.

As in, how I always came into class dirty, with my hair in the same messed up ponytail I managed to get it in myself, while the other girls came in in pretty dresses, beautifully done hair, and sometimes even makeup.

“She can’t get lice because she doesn’t ever take a shower,” I heard one of the kids say. “At least, that’s what my mommy says. That lice don’t like dirty hair. That’s why I only wash my hair three times a week, instead of every day like my daddy. Do you think she knows that her hair is ugly?”

I knew that my hair was ugly.

I knew that my clothes were dirty.

I knew that I lived in the slum of slums trailer park.

I knew that my mother didn’t work or clean up around the house. I knew that my daddy did work, but he was even less clean than I was.

I also knew that our water had been turned off so many times that at this point, it was more of a surprise to find the water working than not.

“Her brother’s never dirty.”

That was from another little girl.

And the mention of my brother sent shivers of fear through me.

“I hear that their mommy and daddy are being investigated by CPS,” another whispered, obviously unaware that I could hear everything that they said. “But my mommy said that she was going to get moved to a foster home. They were trying to find someone to take both her and her brother.”

That was news to me.

“Girls,” my teacher, Mrs. Martin, snapped. “This will be the last time that I’ll tell you to stop whispering to each other, or I’ll be sending you to the principal’s office. Do you understand?”

“Yes, Mrs. Martin,” all three girls said in unison.

Then they glared at me as if I was the one to get them in trouble for talking.

Which couldn’t be further from the truth.

I didn’t talk to anyone. I didn’t make eye contact. I for sure didn’t tattle.

Because tattling was the first thing that would get me backhanded by my father or my mother.

And if anyone had anything to tattletale about, it would be me.

The bell rang, and I couldn’t get out of the class fast enough.

Technically, I was supposed to wait for my teacher to dismiss us, but I never did.

And she never got mad that I didn’t wait.

Secretly, she felt bad for me.

All of my clothes, the clean ones anyway, were from her.

I knew that she felt bad about my situation, and I had a feeling she was the reason that CPS was called.

It really was news to me that we might get taken away, though.

I almost made it to the back entrance that would lead to the back of the school, which would then lead me all the way home, when an arm encircled my neck.

I cringed when I heard my brother’s voice say, “You’re not riding the bus today, dork?”

I swallowed hard, feeling the bile rise in my throat.

“N-no,” I stuttered. “I was going to walk.”

My brother’s arm tightened. “You need to shower.”

I needed to shower.

There was a creek on the way home that I sometimes bathed in, but it’d been so cold lately that I didn’t do it as often as I probably should.

“Y-yes,” I continued to stutter.

The arm tightened so tight that I felt my neck crack.

“I have a surprise for you when you get home.” He sounded gleeful. “I left it by your bed.”

I didn’t want to see the surprise.

But I knew I would.

And I was right.

Two long miles, a cold wash in the creek, and a walk back home in my wet clothes later, I found his ‘present.’

It was our cat.

One that’d been dead for a year now because I’d witnessed him murder it.

It was lying on the foot of my bed.

My cat’s eyes were withered, and his hair was falling out in patches. There was a sick sort of liquid on his body, and the smell was horrific.

I closed my eyes and nearly cried.

I’d have to take him out in the one and only blanket that I had.

And this time, bury him somewhere where my brother couldn’t find him.

“I’m sorry, friend,” I whispered as I walked out of the room to hear my brother’s manic laughter. “I’m so sorry he did this to you.”

And that was the story of how I became dirty again.

The moment he divorced his ex-wife, Jeremiah decided two things.
One, he would never, ever get into that kind of situation again—i.e., marriage.
Two, he would spend more time doing what he loved—baking, riding motorcycles, spending time with the Battle Crows MC, and getting some quiet time for just himself. Pretty much doing the things he enjoyed, that his ex-wife could no longer ruin.
And, months after his divorce was final, he’s held strong. He hasn’t gotten entangled with a woman. He’s opened his own bakery. And he’s never been closer to his club.
It has to be why he allowed them to have a massive club party at his place, which became the cause of Gracelynn Barry entering his life.
If he’d known Gracie was going to be his employee, he definitely wouldn’t have slept with her.
Yet, there he is, in the middle of an interview, finding out not only was the woman he slept with the most viable applicant for a job he very much needed filled, but that she’d recently broken up with the man he loathed. The second reason he’d divorced his ex-wife. Erich. His ex-stepson.
To say life is simple for Jeremiah would be a joke of epic proportions. It’s time for him to buckle up.

I resisted the urge to look at my watch—a habit that I had when things made me nervous. It was a ‘how much longer do I have to be here’ kind of thing, rather than an actual checking my watch for the time kind of thing.

“I have…” I listed off all my accolades, finishing with, “And that was before I spent nearly half my life in a kitchen before the age of sixteen. We made all of our own food from scratch, going so far as to only use our homemade items in every single recipe we used.”

The woman doing the interview looked impressed with that, but luckily, she didn’t ask me to go into more detail.

Giving any backstory on my life was a total downer, and something that I did not want to go into with a potential employer.

“That’s very interesting.” She started to stack her papers neatly. “I’m going to say this now. Jer is a really, really big pain in the ass. I’m only doing this interview for him because he hates doing this part of owning a business. But my brother will be your boss. I like you a lot… but let’s just say, he has final say in everything. He will have to meet you first, but I can give you a call back once he decides that he’ll take you on.”

I smiled.

That was understandable.

It was his business, after all.

“Whatever you need from me, I’ll do,” I assured her. “I’m really excited to find a job like this here.”

The woman smiled. “My brother will make you miserable. I hope that you feel the same way after you’re hired.”

After that parting comment, I couldn’t help but say, “I don’t think I’ll hate him at all. Not if we both love to bake.”

Famous last words.

• • •

An hour later, with the giddiness for life once again surging through my veins, I made one last stop before heading to my rental cottage on the lake.

That stop being the job that I’d landed after hitting town.

I rolled up to the restaurant and parked at the staff entrance, knowing that I was about to be confronted in a way I wasn’t comfortable with.

Erich, my boss, as well as other things that I wasn’t really interested in putting a label on, was the first person I saw and heard as I made my way through the back door.

“Listen,” Erich snarled to the small woman that was all but cowering standing in front of him. “I said ‘whipped.’ Not ‘buttercream.’ Get back there and fucking fix it.”

I gritted my teeth as I made my way inside.

“Oh, so you decided to show up after all?”

I blinked, surprised to hear Erich’s voice so close when just a few seconds ago he’d been across the room.

His hand went to my hip, and I barely checked the urge to throw his hand off.
Usually when you find out you have a stalker, you don’t fall in love with him.
But Banger Olivia Crest isn’t your normal, run of the mill, everyday girl. Banger is a truck driver who just so happens to know how to sling drinks in her spare time.
She’s had a bad hand dealt to her time after time, and the last thing that she wants is to go all in. At least, that’s until she meets the geeky biker with his shy looks, and his surprisingly awesome fighting skills.
Easton McKennick, ex-FBI agent and newest member of the Battle Crows MC, never really intended to actually reveal that he’d been stalking Banger since his early days in the FBI. In fact, he never intended to do anything at all when it came to the woman that held his heart.
That was, until she offered to be his fake date to a police ball that just so happened to be where his own stalker would be. To sell it that he was happy and he’d moved on from his previous relationship, Banger and Easton pretend they’re a couple.
All it takes is two hours for them both to realize that there’s not very much pretending going on. The only problem is, Easton’s stalker put a bull’s-eye on their backs, and they don’t know how to fix it.

At least, that was what he’d overheard the mother say to her daughter a few moments after seeing her again after she’d had to rescue herself from a kidnapping.

They—the police, not her mother—had been nice enough to pay for her flight to get her back to her dad’s house. Why her dad’s, and not her mom’s and stepdad’s house, where she’d lived the majority of her life?

Because her mom and stepdad were on vacation in the Bahamas and had been there for going on a month now to celebrate ten years of marriage. They’d only flown home to make sure that whatever bullshit the press scrounged up made them look good. Once they knew they were in the clear, they’d flown back to their vacation, leaving their traumatized daughter behind.

If I’d had my way, I wouldn’t have allowed her to leave my sight at all.

But, sadly, I didn’t have my way.

In fact, very rarely lately did I get the choice to do anything that I wanted to do.

Like kill O’Ryan, the so-called ‘brother’ of Banger Crest.

But after hearing from his superiors in a meeting with the top dogs of the FBI that not only would O’Ryan be going into protective custody because he’d copped a plea deal, but also because O’Ryan was connected AF? Well, let’s just say I’d no longer decided to be the better person.

All my life, I’d been the one that’d taken the hits, but never served them back karma style in retaliation.

But after seeing that look on Banger’s face, hearing her mother’s words, and realizing that the FBI wasn’t going to do a damn thing to help?

My faith in the FBI was no longer where it should be.

After Banger got home, and returned to normal life, I’d tried to let it ride.

I’d tried to forget about her.

I’d tried, and failed.

I couldn’t let it ride.

I wouldn’t.

So I did what I had to do.

Found who I had to find after he’d been entered into a witness protection program.

And the moment he sang like a canary and thought he would be free, I made sure to let him know his assumptions were wrong.

He wasn’t free.

He wouldn’t ever be free again.

And I took him to the one place that I knew they could make sure of it.

The Battle Crows MC.

Where I eventually became a fully patched member and joined the wrong side of the law.

It felt fucking wonderful.

CHAPTER 1

Wit’s end.

-street sign

BANGER

To Whom It May Concern:
This is an anonymous letter sent to you by someone that felt that you needed to know what will be said in this letter. It was not sent in a malicious way, but in a way that clearly shows that anonymous wants to help. Not hurt.

A long time ago, when they started coming to the gym, it was their happy place. Their one place that they could go to relax, unwind, and get a workout in. But it’d also turned into a family environment that they could stay at for hours if they wanted to.

However, my client feels that the gym is no longer that for her.

Lately, the coaching has been poor. The place has fallen into disrepair, and it has come to her attention that you have been very open and uncaring about how you can’t afford to ‘coddle’ the athletes.

She feels like you have become a different person after your divorce, and that you no longer care about anyone or anything but the fact that your ex-wife has ‘ruined your business.’

In the last two years, you’ve not once updated a single piece of equipment, and it’s become common knowledge that your gym is one of the ‘roughest’ in the city because of your lack of updates to the facility.

There are a lot of members talking about leaving because of the lack of cleanliness, too.

Please, do not take this anonymous letter in the wrong way. She’s coming from a place of love. And just wants her gym to go back to normal.

Please consider hiring lawn services, cleaning crews, and putting a little money back into the gym so your clients won’t leave you.

Sincerely,

Anonymous, LLC

I sent the letter through an editing program, read over it, rearranged and added where needed, then sent the letter through the editing software one more time before printing it out.

From there, I folded it, stuffed it into an envelope, then placed it on the shiny bar next to the other stack of letters that were to be sent out once the mailman arrived.

Then I sighed and looked at the spot in the bar top that I usually avoided looking at with all my strength.

But it was futile. I looked at the place where my sister, Faye, had always sat and cheered me on. And felt my stomach clench.
You better watch out for people that bounce back from everything that’s meant to destroy them.
Those were the words that Coreline King learned to live by when it came to dealing with Tide ‘Rook’ Crow, member of the Battle Crows MC, general surgeon, and all-around jerk who lived to make her life a living hell.
It all started in high school when he stopped seeing her as a random girl and started to see her as his rival.
Together, they became ‘frenemies.’ I.e.—a person with whom one is friendly, despite a fundamental dislike or rivalry. At least, it started out like that.
Everyone always says there’s a fine line between love and hate. And at first, Tide and Coreline don’t realize how very true that is.
Not until Tide gets hurt defending Coreline’s honor, and Coreline has to fix him because she feels like she owes him.
But one night of bad choices leads to a very big ‘oops’ that will either haunt them for the next eighteen years or bring them together as tight as they ever could be.

My hip smarted and my elbow throbbed as I glanced up at the boy that’d just bowled me over.

“Can’t you fuckin’ see where you’re going, asshole?” I grumbled loudly.

Tide, with his big brown eyes and his shaggy brown hair, looked down at me with amusement. Offering me his hand, he said, “Sorry, Elvis. Didn’t see you.”

I refused his offer of help and pushed up to my feet, regretting the move immediately when the throbbing in my elbow nearly caused me to slip back to the floor.

Thankfully, I made it to standing and bent down to pick up my backpack.

“Don’t call me Elvis,” I ordered.

“Amber?” he jeered.

I wanted to throat punch him.

“Even worse,” I hissed.

He chuckled, his eyes filled with mirth.

“Come on, Amber Alert. It’ll be okay,” he teased.

I wanted to throat punch him.

Two years ago, when I was asked how old I was at a teen dance by one of the chaperones because I ‘didn’t look like I could possibly be in high school,’ Tide had started that awful nickname.

Amber Alert. As in, child.

God, I fuckin’ hated him.

“It’ll be okay when we’re freakin’ out of here, and I’m in Austin, and you’re nowhere freakin’ near me anymore,” I grumbled.

A gleam entered his eyes. “Austin?”

I narrowed my eyes. “Yeah, why?”

His grin slid back into place. “No reason.”

I didn’t like the look on his face when he said that.

More so, I didn’t trust it.

“Tide and Coreline,” I heard a familiar voice say. “Why does it not surprise me that not only are y’all late for third period, but you’re also together?”

I turned to see Principal Archie looking at us with narrowed eyes.

I groaned.

I could not handle another after-school detention with either of the two.

I showed him my elbow and said, “Sorry, Principal A. But I fell and hit my elbow really hard, and I was trying not to throw up.”

Principal Adams blanched. “Ouch.”

I looked at what I could and agreed. It looked really bad.

The bruising was already starting.

“Mr. Crow, did you have a part in that bruise?” Principal A asked casually.

Too casually.

I nearly laughed as I walked away, leaving him to answer for his sins.

But the abuse didn’t stop.

It only got worse as the day went on, and by the time that school let out later that afternoon, I’d been ‘Amber Alerted’ at least four more times by Tide and teased mercilessly over lunch.

I was over it.

So over it, in fact, that seeing his face as I was walking home while he drove by infuriated me.

What infuriated me more was that my brother was with them, hitching a ride, and none of them stopped to ask if I wanted a ride or not.

The assholes.

I all but marched my happy ass to my dad’s work after that, pissed off and angry at the world. Or maybe just Tide ‘Rook’ Crow.

I called him Tide. I refused to call him by that stupid nickname that everyone else called him.

Rook.

That was just dumb.

“What’s crawled up your ass?”

I looked up, not realizing I’d stomped my butt right into my dad’s open bay door, until that very moment.

I showed him my elbow, which had a gnarly bruise on it. “The asshole pushed me over again.”

My father’s eyes narrowed as he saw the bruise.

My dad knew all about Tide Crow.

He knew about all the Crows.

I mean, there was Jeremiah Crow, who was his best friend. Jeremiah was the uncle to all the other little Crows. Not to mention, Price Crow worked in my father’s shop during the summer and sometimes on the weekends when he wasn’t busy with sports.

Dad liked all the Crows. Except for Tide.

Why didn’t he like Tide?

Because I didn’t like Tide.

Tide was the bane of my existence. The boy-man that went out of his way to hurt me. The constant tyrant at school that made going there hell on earth.

Luckily, we had one more week until graduation.

Unluckily, that only meant that I’d have to spend another summer with his brother working at my dad’s shop with me. His brother who always attracted his other brother because they were practically best friends.

But, on the bright side, that only meant that we were that much closer to college. And I was going to Texas State Technical College to become a welder in Austin. Which meant I’d be hours and hours away from him soon.

All I had to do was make it through the summer.

Oh, and the last few days of school.

How hard could it be?

Turns out, not only was it hard, but he followed me to the same fuckin’ city three months later.

Fuck my life.

CHAPTER 1

I solve all my problems by creating three new ones as distractions.
Book 3 of the Battle Crows MC with Price & Sabrina.
It’s not every day that you see a dead body at the beach. Or the woman of your dreams sitting next to that dead body.
Price Crow first saw Sabrina Proctor in the middle of a hurricane.
She’d been sitting next to her dead best friend, who’d passed away on the beach, with no way to get her back home, thanks to the world’s worst luck, and one hell of a storm.
So Price does what any decent person would do: he carries Sabrina’s dead best friend to their beach house and doesn’t leave her side until he’s forced to.
He had every intention of bridging that gap, of checking up on her and making sure she was okay, but life is funny and has a way of making a mockery of the best-laid plans.
Despite one hell of a connection, under the worst of circumstances, they go their separate ways. At least, he tries to. But he can’t stop thinking about her, and it becomes apparent, very fast, that he has a decision to make.
Choose Sabrina, or live out the rest of his life making everyone else around him happy except for himself.

Surely, I hadn’t heard him correctly.

Surely.

“I want my dad to check to make sure that you’re still pure,” Cole repeated, confirming that I had, in fact, heard him correctly. I wasn’t hearing things. “I know that this is rather… odd. But this is something that every single female in the history of my family has done on the night before her wedding.”

I blinked.

Then I burst out laughing.

Because surely he had to be joking.

He had to be.

Right?

But nope, the moment that I burst out laughing, Cole’s lips went all pinchy—which usually indicated that he was about to lose his shit.

But, I kept laughing.

Because how could I not?

I mean, when I’d met Cole at the age of eighteen, I’d found his vow of celibacy until marriage quite annoying, but doable.

I mean, we were meant to have sex, and I didn’t believe in all that hullabaloo like he did.

But since Cole meant something to me, I was more than willing to give him everything he asked for.

And I did.

I gave him six years, as well as my promise of waiting until marriage.

“Only if you let my dad look at your asshole,” I found myself saying, hoping yet again for him to joke right back with me.

Except, he got offended. “What does my butthole have to do with this?”

I literally almost burst out laughing again.

Because he was so offended, in fact, that he had that little line between his eyebrows, indicating that he was even closer to blowing.

I’d been on the receiving end of Cole’s temper before, and I didn’t like it.

He knew this.

I knew this.

My dad even knew this.

Yeah, speaking of my dad…

“I guess I’ll see you later,” I said stiffly.

I stormed out of the house, the only thing on my mind was my father, and what he would do now that I’d called the wedding off.

Probably celebrate.

My dad hadn’t much liked Cole since the moment that I’d met him.

He’d tolerated him, sure, but he hadn’t liked him.

Which was quite surprising, because everyone liked Cole.

Only my dad?

He hadn’t much liked him.

“If you leave, you won’t be welcomed back.”

I looked over my shoulder at my now ex-fiancé.

What I saw were his brothers, his dad, and him watching me go. Cole looked as if he couldn’t quite believe I was walking away.

His father and brothers were looking on as if their favorite plaything was disappearing right out of their lives.

Gross.

I got in my car and plugged my phone into my dash, because I still needed the fucking GPS to lead me out of the hellhole where Cole lived with his backwoods family.

Pressing Dad on my favorites, I started heading toward his house, shaking my head and muttering to myself the entire way.

I got home—and yes, I still thought of my dad’s place as home even though I’d moved out four years ago when I’d started college—and slammed my car door a little too hard.

Causing my grandfather to startle from the nap he’d been taking on the front porch.

“Whoa there, darlin’,” Gramps called in his frail voice. “What on Earth has your knickers in a twist?”

I gritted my teeth as I all but stomped up the walkway to the porch.

“I’ll only be able to repeat this once,” I said. “Let me go get Dad and a beer, he’s gonna need one. Do you want one?”

“Of course,” Gramps supplied.

The moment I breached the door to the house, my father looked up from the table, where he was crushing peanut shells with his fingers and tossing the nuts into his mouth.

He had a massive mess of shells and stuff all over his lap and the floor around him—something that would’ve made my mother apoplectic if she were still around—and he was looking at me with surprise.

“You’re early,” he said.

I’d intended on staying the night with him tonight, as was the usual for a bride on the night before her wedding.

I sighed. “I need a beer, STAT. I also want to talk to you. Gramps wants to know, too, so we have to go out to the porch.”

Dad stood up and snatched two beers out of the fridge door and jerked his head toward me.

I took the beer, and he seized the bag of peanuts as he followed close behind.

Only when we were all situated, and I exacted a promise out of my dad, did I start the story of how my night had gone.

When I was finished explaining what had happened, my dad was looking at me as if I’d grown a second head.

“Let me get this straight,” Dad gaped. “Your fiancé, and his dad, as well as his brothers, wanted to check to make sure you were still a virgin?”

I swallowed hard. “Yes.”

“And he does know that hymens are practically a myth nowadays, correct?” he challenged.
After observing her and her interactions over the last two weeks during her psych hold, I feel safe in saying that she has what you would call a ‘classic’ case of schizophrenia.”

The doctor looked at us with a clinical disregard for feelings.

He was matter of fact.

He was blunt.

He was changing my entire life.

“What does that mean?” my mom asked.

“It means that she hears voices, darling,” my father supplied oh so helpfully.

“Basically, it’s a long-term mental disorder that leads to a breakdown in the relationship between thought, emotion and behavior. It leads to a faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships—in this case, that’s congruent with her attempt at hurting her sister—into fantasy and delusion.” He paused to take a deep breath. “When she attempted to hurt Iris, she genuinely believed that her sister had come into her room and tried to murder her first.”

That was… wow.

I’d never…

“And what does that mean in the long term?” my mother pushed.

I didn’t want to know.

Because this all seemed like a dream. My sister had tried to kill me.

“Long term? It means that she’ll be on medication for the rest of her life. If she comes off of it, she could potentially harm someone next time. Her medication will have to be regulated. There’s no way that she’ll be able to just ‘skip’ a day. It’s every single day. For the rest of her life.” He paused. “I also recommend psychotherapy. And, if she doesn’t respond well to the medication, then I also recommend that she be introduced to a long-term care facility that can help with her them and making sure that she continues to do this correctly.”

I looked away.

But it was my mother who said, “We will bring her home. We’ll make sure to always keep an eye on her.”

Lies.

They were all lies.

CHAPTER 1

Do you think Medusa has snakes as pubic hairs?

-Iris’s secret thoughts

IRIS

“You are not walking out that door,” Teller growled. “I will not allow you to come back when you realize the fuckup you just made.”

My ex-boyfriend, Teller Kincaid, police chief of Gun Barrel, Texas, looked at me like I was a lunatic.

He thought I was coming back here to get back with him.

In actuality, I was coming back to his house to pick up my laptop that cost a whack, and I needed it so that I didn’t have to watch Netflix on my phone during my layover tomorrow.

“Teller,” I sighed. “You cheated on me with another woman. I’m not sure what you expect of me here.”

It was true.

The flight I’d been working two months ago from Dallas to Detroit had been canceled due to weather. And, since that had been my last flight of four, that would leave me being off for a week, I’d come home since there was no reason to stay in Dallas.

Meaning, I’d arrived home a day early, only to find my boyfriend at the time, Teller, kissing another woman in his bed.

Granted, he hadn’t been fucking her, but in my book, he might as well have been.

There was something wrong with me.

Every single guy I let into my life left it. But only after cheating on me before he did.

“I wasn’t going to fuck her!” Teller growled. “I was only talking.”

“With your mouth?” I asked curiously. “And why was she in the bed that we share? Teller, honest to God, you’re a great guy. I don’t understand why you would’ve done that.”

I hadn’t stayed long after discovering the two of them together.

In all honesty, I hadn’t given him time to explain, either.

I’d seen the blonde hair. I’d seen Teller’s hands wrapped around a small waist, and I’d taken that as my sign—the one that I’d been asking for for a while—to leave. There was nothing left for us and hadn’t been for a long time.

“It was a mistake,” he argued. “She was here because she didn’t have anywhere else to go.”

“Well, now she can share that bed with you, hoss. I’m not gonna use it anymore,” I told him bluntly. “If you happen to find anything else of mine that I didn’t clear out, let me know. I’ll come by and get it. I’m staying with Davina until I can get a new apartment.”

He sighed. “You could just move back into the one below.”

I felt my eye twitch.

I’d rather choke myself with a toothbrush than move into the separate apartment on his property, but that would just be stupid. There was barely any housing in Intercourse, Texas.
A few years ago, when his sister went missing, Haggard Crow turned into something he never wanted to be. A killer.
Even after his sister is rescued a year after she was kidnapped and sold, Haggard ‘Thief’ Crow doesn’t have any plans on changing. He sort of likes the zero fucks given guy that he is now.
Bonus points, he saves women and children from extreme situations, along with his club and real life brothers by his side.
After a horrible marriage, Haggard has zero plans of ever finding a woman again. One-night stands not counting, he adores his life as a single man. There are no expectations. No ‘where are yous’ and ‘are you coming homes.’
The life he chooses to live is a simple one. Until he makes a huge mistake, and he steps over that line between ‘daughter’s best friend’ and ‘a woman he desperately wants.’
Before long, he can’t stop thinking about her. Can’t stop wanting her. Can’t stop feeling things for her that a man twenty years her senior should never feel for a girl he watched grow up.
After one lapse in judgment, he decides she needs to go. But the funny thing is, he never expected Sophia Madden to fight back. And dirty at that.
That’s what dating a Texas girl is like.

-overheard coffee shop conversations

SOPHIA

“Can you please, please, please do it for me?” Clementine, my best friend, begged.

I looked over at her and frowned. “I can, yes. But I have to work tomorrow early. That means I’ll have to get up at five to leave your dad’s place by five-thirty to get to work by six.”

I’d just started a new job.

My first ‘big girl’ job, as my dad liked to say.

A job that I hated.

No, loathed.

I’m talking, if there was another job available in Paris, Texas, even if it paid half of what I was being paid now, I’d take it in a heartbeat kind of hated it.

The first day as a sales rep at Paris Motors, I’d done really well. I’d actually sold my first car before I’d even really been on the clock.

Unfortunately for me, having done that, I’d taken the commission out of another woman’s pocket. A woman that’d been on the phone with a client who hadn’t purchased a car like my client—the one that I got a thousand dollar commission off of—she hadn’t been very happy.

From that point forward, I’d spent the majority of my time at the car dealership trying to keep my head attached to my body.

Each morning, I’d get there and find out that I was assigned to work with Blakely, and I seriously wanted to commit suicide by bus.

Or maybe golf cart.

Whatever worked at this point…

“I do hate it,” I admitted. “But I can’t quit. Quitting means admitting that she’s right, and she’s fucking not. So I’m going to keep working there, and I’m going to show up in my fucking short dress and cleavage-baring top and get my fucking commission.”

“You can do all that, still go workout, and get to work on time, while also watching our dog,” she pushed.

I sighed.

A few years ago, Clementine’s dad had purchased a family protection dog. Honestly, he was great, did some awesome protecting, but the damn dog couldn’t be left alone because he got bored easily.

When he didn’t have someone to protect, he occupied himself by eating the walls.

And, since Clementine’s dad was out of town on business, and Clem’s parents had recently gotten an official divorce, that meant that Trista, Clem’s mom, wasn’t there either.

Leaving Clem the only one to watch Body.

“I realize that you think that I’m a whore for…” I held up my hand to stop Clem’s words.

“Clem,” I said carefully. “I never said you were a whore.”

“You’re looking at me like I’m about to mutate into a disease you don’t want any part of,” she countered.

I wasn’t.

Not really.

I just couldn’t believe that she was going to go to Las Vegas, in a dress that short, with a man she didn’t know, and a friend that I wasn’t sure that I liked all that much.

If I didn’t have to work, I would’ve forced myself on them so I could go and keep an eye on Clem.

But Clem was a big girl, I did have work, and I wasn’t going to change her mind.

“Fine,” I said after a couple more seconds of her pouting. “But please, please, please, will you put on some bike shorts under that? Wearing something that short means that when you bend over, people will see what you’re working with.”

“What who’s working with?”

I looked up at my dad and smiled. “Clem’s going to Las Vegas, and she thinks that wearing this black dress will get her laid.”

My dad’s eye twitched as he turned his gaze on my best friend.

Clem’s face went a rapid red as she shifted in her seat. “Soph…”

I knew, just as well as she did, that she harbored some sort of weird crush on my dad.

I wasn’t sure why, or to what extent she felt it, but I knew that she found my dad attractive.

Kind of like how I found her dad attractive.

Attractive in a prematurely silvering, jacked, sexy beast of a bearded man kind of way.

My ‘attraction’ bordered on ‘intense.’

Not that Clem knew the depths of my attraction to her dad.

In fact, I had a feeling she was pretty oblivious to it all.

Because had she known of my obsession with her dad, she wouldn’t be asking me to go stay at his house.

She would understand the kind of temptation that would put me in.

“I would put on some shorts and a t-shirt with some comfortable tennis shoes,” my dad suggested, not even looking my way. “Walking up and down the Strip will be a nightmare.”

Clem scoffed. “Not any worse than running that half-marathon in heels like the one we ran together last spring.”

It was early fall now, and it was on the verge of switching from summer one to summer two heat temperature-wise.

We were at a balmy ninety-seven degrees, and it wasn’t even eight in the morning yet.
