CHAPTER 1

Aurora

In my purple dress, I run as hard as I can without looking back.

Into the darkness, into my biggest fear.

Complete and utter loneliness.

Even though tears run freely across my cheeks and my legs quake from the adrenaline, I keep going, far beyond the doors to the warehouse, across the pier, and into a narrow alley. I zigzag between the buildings. Ignoring the pain in my feet and muscles, I keep going, past all the warehouses, until I finally reach a road.

Pausing, I take a huge breath while bent over with my hands on my knees.

I gaze down at the pavement and at the salty droplets that slowly begin to cover it. Each one of those specks is a scream swallowed back down.

Don’t break down. Not yet.

I blow out a big breath and continue running, pushing back the sting of regret.

I have to keep going.

For him.

“Aurora.”

A familiar voice suddenly makes me stop and almost tumble forward.

Looking around, I only see warehouses and giant dumpsters. To the left, behind all the alleys, is an endless sea.

“Here.”

The voice comes from behind one of the dumpsters. And it’s definitely a guy, but he sounds like a mess.

Should I see who’s behind it? Or run like hell?

The same guy groans in pain.

How could I ignore that?

I sigh out loud but quickly make my way to the dumpsters to my right. My eyes widen the second I spot who’s lying in the rubble.

“Papa,” I mutter, and I rush over to him, only to stop mere inches away when our eyes connect, and I remember what he’d said to me.

I don’t even want her. I never did.

She’s a monster.

I swallow away the lump in my throat.

“Please …” he mutters, his breathing ragged. Uneven.

His body contains gashes and bruises from the torture Lex’s men did to him. God knows what else they subjected him to. He looks completely spent.

“Help me.” The visceral pain in his voice is hard to take.

He reaches for me but never comes close as his hand drops down to his body in defeat. And I blink away a couple of my tears.

I hate him for what he said.

But he’s still my father.

And he’s begging for help.

I push away the shame and kneel in front of him.

“Please … help me stand,” he murmurs.

I sigh and nod. Then I place my arm underneath his shoulder and help him get up from the ground.

“Can you walk?” I ask.

He nods. “Barely.”

“We need to get out of here. Fast,” I reply.

He groans in pain but allows me to move him. Every step he takes weighs down on me, but I do my best to carry him as we walk away from the alley. It doesn’t take him long to get the hang of walking in pain. Every once in a while, he hisses and clamps his teeth, his face contorting from the agony, but it does little to my frozen heart.

Still, I couldn’t leave him there to die.

“Check every fucking warehouse!”

My pupils dilate, and I glare up beyond the road we’re on.

Lex’s guards.

“Duck,” I bark at my father, who immediately hides behind a big machine standing outside a warehouse. I help him stay put without falling over, but his sheer weight strains my muscles.

Sweat drops roll all over my face and back. There’s no time to process what happened or think about any of the wounds on my body or my father’s. And no time to think about Beast being left alone to die.

I gulp down my nerves as several guards run past us, oblivious to our location.

I can’t let all the effort Beast did to save me go in vain.

CHAPTER 1

Beast

My world is shuttered in darkness.

Behind these bars, I become one with the shadows.

I sleep in them. Breathe in them. Live in them.

I simply just … exist.

Until …

CREAK.

The door at the top of the stairs opens, and a sliver of light is cast down into my cell.

Onto me.

Huddled in the corner, I stay put, eyes half-closed but vigilant.

THUD. THUD. THUD.

Two feet slowly appear, as though it costs him great trouble to even walk. Then the rest of his body reveals itself, his chest rising and falling with each step as if even coming down here costs him a great deal.

Patience.

Energy.

Everything I have.

Everything he doesn’t.

I watch as his wrinkly face comes into view. His lip curls up, barely taking the time to form the word as he spews it. “Beast.”

My nostrils flare at the sound of his voice. At the beckoning and my mandatory call.

But I stay put in my cell, watching him from afar.

A filthy smile appears on his face. “I have a job for you.”

His hand dives into his pocket, and he pulls out a photograph of what appears to be a family of just two. A man with a potbelly and a beard just like my owner’s and a girl with her back toward the camera, huddled over a piano.

My owner approaches my cell and presses the photograph against the bars. “Bring me his head.”

I step out from the shadows and into the light. Every footstep is another thud on the stone ground beneath my feet. His body quakes the closer I get until my frame towers over his. Until the only thing separating us are thick metal rods.

My house.

My prison.

I snatch the photograph from his hand and study the image carefully, taking in every detail. The colors, the view behind the window, the man’s wretched smile … and the girl’s beautiful, flowing black hair that reminds me of the sea of shadows I call home.

A small strand of hair tucks behind her ear, and an inch of her blushed cheeks are visible, along with the edge of rose coral lips hiding behind the veil of darkness.

A hint of a smile.

Like a promise.

A secret.

I swallow.

“Kill anyone who gets in your way.”

My eyes flicker up to meet his. “Anyone?”

“I don’t care.” His lips curl up like a wolf. “Kill. Them. All.”

Kill.

I like that word.

It’s all I’ve ever known.

All I’ve ever understood.

The only thing that will ever get me where I want to be.

Out.

CHAPTER 2

Aurora

“You.” PUNCH. “Mother—” PUNCH. “Fucking.” PUNCH. “LIAR!”

I open the door at the last slap and peek through the narrow gap. Downstairs, my father’s raised fist makes my heart beat faster as he shakes the blood off his knuckles.

“I swear, we didn’t know,” the man on his knees in front of him says.

His face is bloodied and mauled.

“Disgusting.” My father spits on him. “I should’ve known better than to trust you with this fucking shipment.”

“We were ambushed!” the man replies.

WHACK!

The hit is so hard and fast that the man’s whole body turns sideways, and his eyes meet mine.

I gasp and close the door for a second, calming my speeding heart.

But I can never fight the urge to look.

“I’m sorry,” the man mutters as I peer downstairs again.

“You should be. Do you know what this will cost me?” my father yelps. “EVERYTHING!”

“I’ll get it back,” the man says. “We have the weapons. We can fight them.”

“You’ve done enough,” my father barks. “I want you out of my sight. NOW!”

The man hurriedly gets up and runs outside, leaving bloodied handprints all over the door. My father wipes the back of his hands on a napkin. Then his eyes connect with mine.

I hold my breath, close my eyes, and shut the door.

“Aurora.”

Too late.

Sighing out loud, I frown, slapping my forehead. “Stupid, stupid, stupid!” I mutter to myself.

“Come here.” My father’s monotonous voice forces me to open the door again and take in the full brunt of his disappointment in me.

His eyes narrow when they meet mine, and I swiftly close the door behind me and walk down the stairs.

“Didn’t I tell you not to eavesdrop on my business?” he says.
