Ivy: He shows up day after day looking insanely gorgeous and smart with his sharply tailored suits, his laptop, and a pair of black-rimmed glasses. He stares at me almost the entire time he sits in my café, but he doesn't introduce himself to me. The more time goes by, the more I want him to leave, but I've learned that not only does he now own the café—he owns me too.

My brother stands in the doorway to my office, his tie loosened, ready to go home to see his wife and son. Besides our illicit activities, I run the accounting side for our investment firm. Surprisingly, there are more crooks in the legitimate world than outside it.

“Have a seat, Dom. What can I do for you?” He sits on the chair, leaning forward with his elbows on his thighs and his fingers steepled against his lips.

It must be urgent for him to rush in like this. I can’t recall seeing him this upset in a while. “I have a client that hasn’t been repaying the funds in full payments. He claims the business isn’t doing well, and before I break his knees, I need to find out if he’s lying to me, or if the business is struggling in this economy. He put the business up as collateral, so I want to know if it’s easier to dispose of it or monopolize on it.”

“What kind of business? Do you need me to go over their books?”

“It’s a café that offers a bit of food along with a variety of coffee and teas. And as for the books, I want you to hold off so we don’t draw attention to his daughter. He came to me after they were turned down for a loan. He claimed his daughter had health issues, and this was killing their income. I bought the story and loaned the money on the basis of repayment of $10K a month for the next year and a half. He hasn’t given us more than $10K in three months. I’m telling you—maybe it’s being a father that’s made me weak, but I can’t let this fucker change my reputation.”

I nod. Being head of a crime family has its dangers when enemies sense weakness.

“Understood. When do you want me to scope it out?” I’m already running my schedule through my head, making adjustments to meet his request.

He slaps his hand on my desk and says, “As soon as possible. They open at six, so I’d say hit it up as soon as you can. That way, you can determine their potential revenue.”

“Okay. I’ll go there first thing in the morning. I love coffee and numbers. The evaluation time is going to be roughly a week. And if they’re having a special, I’ll have to factor that in as well; still, I should have a good estimate.”

“Well, do the best you can. I have a feeling I’m being played, and you know I can’t stand for that.” He slides over a sheet of paper with their location and name. Ivy’s Café. I wonder if that’s the daughter’s name and what illness she has.

“Understood. I’ve got this.” He leaves my office looking more relaxed than when he came in. I duck my head and get back to the spreadsheets in front of me, working throughout the evening to make up for the upcoming week’s change in schedule.

I turn off the light in my office around nine which is about three hours later than normal, and I can’t wait to head to my condo. I call my favorite restaurant, order a small meal, and pick it up on my way home. Most days I don’t cook for myself, so they know me well and were surprised to see me so late.

“Wow, did you work long tonight?” Giorgio, the owner says as I swipe my card.

“Yes, a very long one.” I nod and wipe my glasses with my handkerchief. It’s only then I realize it’s not the glasses, I’m actually tired.

“Here. Then you must go and get some rest.” He hands me the sack with my container of angel hair pasta in a homemade marinara.

“I will. It’s good to see you.”

“Yes, and one day you bring a girl, no?” His thick, bushy Italian brows raise up.

“Not any time soon,” I say with a chuckle. “I’m not my brother. No woman could get me to marry.”

“Ah…yes. Every single man’s final words.” He claps my back and walks me out. I laugh at his words because he doesn’t know that I don’t even know how to speak to a woman or even give them any of my time to even try.

I barely get through half my dinner when I decide I’m better off going to bed. It still takes me another hour to clean up and shower. By the time I hit my pillow, I’m exhausted, and sleep comes easily.

****

Dressed in my favorite three-piece blue suit, I arrive at the café with my black leather satchel containing my laptop and the work I need to do today besides watching the damn café. I have no interest in this other than the fact someone’s swindling my brother.

Being a father and husband has softened my brother toward people with kids, but once he learns the truth of this, it may harden him again. I can’t wait to end this asshole who thinks he can fuck over my brother and the family. Being quiet and a loner doesn’t mean I don’t pay attention or care.
We’re having our weekly morning meeting before we handle our day-to-day operations. I live less than a mile down the road from his estate, which makes it easy for these early-ass days.

“Nothing on my end, but you know, the day’s only just begun.”

Just as the words are out of my mouth, the office door bursts open. Our eyes go straight to the door and to the man standing there. “We have a problem. A major discrepancy, as a matter of fact,” Niccolò blurts out in a rush of words as he storms into Domani’s office with his dress shirt rumpled like he’s been up all freaking night. I set my coffee down and stare at him. If I didn’t know better, I’d say he’d found someone to warm his bed, but the man lives like a hermit surrounded by his books.

“Well, good morning, brother.” Dom raises his hand, stopping his brother from going off the handle. It’s only seven, and Niccolò looks as if he’s gonna jump out of his skin with anxiety if he doesn’t get this off his chest.

“Sorry—good morning, Dom, Nero.” I acknowledge his greeting with a nod and then go back to my cup of coffee. I have a feeling I’m going to need it. Nico’s not prone to outbursts or looking so damn disheveled, so all hands need to be on deck for this one.

“I’d offer you some coffee, but I’m guessing you’ve already had an entire pot.” I have to bite the inside of my cheek to hold back the chuckle. “So now that we got that out of the way—the who, what, and whys.”

He adjusts his glasses, pushing them back up his nose and then takes a deep breath before beginning his tale. “Well, I noticed that the money from the Eastside Market has been short. Looking back at the records from the shop owner, money has been missing every month. Our runners don’t know that we get a report from the client as well. Comparing the two, it’s clear as day that Eddie Walsh has been skimming off the top and handing in false reports.”

“Okay. Are you sure?” Nico gives his brother the are you kidding me look. The man knows his numbers to the point of some Rain Man-type shit. If he says it’s wrong, then it is.

“Fine. Where is this asshole?”

Nico sets a document down on Dom’s desk. “I don’t know exactly where he’s hiding out at. That’s not my area.” He looks at me and then back to Dom. “I have his contact info, but I don’t know where he stays. I noticed he started looking like a dopehead the last time he made a deposit.”

So there’s a chance he could be hiding anywhere. I’ll sniff that fucker out. It’s my job, after all. I’m the underboss and one hell of an enforcer. I’ve found and dealt with more of our enemies than anyone else.

“Give Nero his number, and then you go back and get some fucking sleep. You look like shit.” Damn, those are fighting words in this family. We all take pride in dressing well. The clothes make the man. No one would take us seriously if we strolled in looking like Nico right now.

“I thought getting married and having your heir would make you a happier man,” Nico mutters, adjusting his clothes a bit and brushing his hands down his suit jacket. Again, I have to hold back the laugh that’s tickling the back of my throat.

“I’m fucking ecstatic when there aren’t problems taking me away from my queen.” Dom turns to address me. “You know what to do, Nero.” He hands me the number on a piece of paper.

“Yes.” I nod and make a note to run a tracker on his number. There’s too much going on to handle the matter at the moment. I keep my seat while Nico leaves, closing the door behind him.

“Damn, Nico needs to loosen up.” I adjust my sleeves and shake my head. If anyone else had said that to Dom, he would have them pinned to the wall with a gun in their mouth, but since they’re both my cousins, I get away with saying it.

“Tell me about it. That stress is going to send him to the hospital. I don’t need this added problem. I need to head over to my Northside distillery and check on the plans for the expansion.”

“Sounds good. I’ll make sure to have this taken care of by the end of the day.” I’m not one to fail on assignments, even if it means taking me away from my usual days at our investment firm.

“I know you will.”

We shake hands and leave his office just in time for his wife to come up to us in the entryway. “On your way out?” she asks me as Dom drags her to his side. The man is obsessed with his wife, and it’s plain for everyone to see. Not that I’m complaining, because I like Aria.
Fascinated. One look and I’d known at that moment that she’d be my wife. Nothing and no one will keep my queen from me, even if I have to wait years to finally claim her. There are no words to express what I’m willing to do to protect our future together. Aria Grasso is mine.

An arranged marriage. I had no idea that I’d be forced to marry a man I didn’t know. I should push him away, but the moment Domani Bianchi and I speak for the first time, I’m confident that it’s a lost cause. Domani has decided I’m his, and my body agrees. Not everyone agrees with our upcoming wedding. However, Domani will have his way. I will be his.
I’ve just gotten my first up-close look at Domani Bianchi. Granted, he never saw my face the entire time his father and mine spoke. I stare out the window as if somehow I’ll still be able to see his brooding handsome face again. It was twenty minutes ago, and I can’t stop thinking of him.

“Aria, are you well?” I dart my eyes to my father, wondering if he knows what’s going through my head right now. I sure as hell hope not, but the man doesn’t give anything away.

I calmly take a breath and say, “Yes, Papa. I’m fine.”

“Your face is flush. Are you sure you’re alright?”

“I am. I’ve never been to Ireland. I think I’m getting anxious, nervous or something.”

“Couldn’t have anything to do with running into Domani Bianchi? He’s not going to hurt you no matter how dark his reputation is.” That perceptive man.

Huffing and fixing the hem of my skirt, I blurt out in a rush, “I didn’t actually see him. Anyway. How long until we’re there? I want to take a nap.” My denial is a little too blatantly obvious, but I hope he drops the subject. Talking about boys with my dad isn’t something I care for and I’m sure neither does he, although Domani Bianchi’s anything but a boy.

“It’s a long flight, so just relax. We’ll be boarding soon.”

“I can’t believe Gloria’s getting married,” my mother says, tearing up.

“I told you we shouldn’t have let her go abroad,” my father snarls at my mother, handing her his handkerchief. My sister was supposed to take a semester in England and somehow ended up in Ireland where she met Cormack Delaney.

They’re getting married in two days because the man is insanely determined and doesn’t care if she ever comes back to Chicago. My father and him had a very long and loud discussion. All things said and done, they’re getting married, and we at least get to see it.

We board the plane and I take a nice built small bed and go to sleep. All the while dreams of Domani keep me from wanting to wake up.

****

I can’t wait to get out of here. I thought when we flew over the Emerald Isle that I’d found paradise, but then Peter Delaney appeared out of thin air, sending chills up and down my skin. His eyes linger over me when he believes no one is looking, but I can feel them as if I rushed into a spider’s web. The creepy feeling has made my brief stay a nightmare.

“It’s time to get ready for the wedding,” my mother says, shaking me out of my terrible thoughts. Unfortunately, Peter’s standing up at the wedding and we’re walking together. His wife is here as well, a pretty lady who appears kind but there’s something behind her eyes that is unsettling. Does she fear her husband? Will Cormack be that way with Gloria?

No. I had my answer the second I met my future brother-in-law. He’s a great guy and wants to worship my sister to the point that I’m a tad bit jealous. I’d hadn’t given marriage that kind of thought until we spotted Domani. Now, it’s all my brain can think of. I blame it on the wedding and all the lovey-dovey emotions flying through the air.

It’s a little sad because Cormack’s father just died a day before Gloria met her fiancé. Still, the day is perfect for the lovely couple. I’ll bite down on my own bile and celebrate my sister’s happiness and avoid Peter as much as I can.

“It’s time, lasses,” Peter utters, rapping his knuckles on the door.

“We’re ready.” I spin around and see my sister in her gorgeous gown, floored by her beauty. My sister is breathtaking and I’m sure Cormack’s going to lose it when he sees her perfection.

“Excuse me,” I hear my father say behind the door. “I’m coming in.” My dad steps into the room, looking handsome as ever in his tux, and his mouth falls open as he stares at Gloria.

“Gloria, you look like an angel.”

“Thank you, Papa.” He hugs her tightly until she lets out a grunt. I snap a picture on my phone of my sister as she smiles at my dad because this is a painting worthy image.

We leave Gloria’s dressing room inside a large Catholic Church only to see Peter waiting for us.

“You should be standing by your brother right now,” my father informs Peter.

With a slight frown, he does just that, allowing me a sigh of relief. I hope after today, it’s the last I see of Peter Delaney.

A year later…

Domani

The meeting’s off to a shitty start. I’m ready to shoot the Denali head for questioning my status at the table, but I will not disrespect our host, Don Anthony Grasso, the head of the Grasso Family. I’m representing the Bianchi family on behalf of my father who is, at present, celebrating his anniversary with my mother. Family always comes first to him and it’s something he’s passed along to his boys.
