Maeve stopped running, only for a moment, trying to catch her breath. It had been a hard run, even in her bear form. She cocked her head to one side, listening for anyone that might be following, but the forest was quiet around her now. It was a far cry from the screams that had filled the air what seemed like only moments ago.

She had barely been out of the tunnel and into the woods when she’d seen the fire flying from the sky, the awful screeching of the dragons as they burned everything below them and then just as quickly flew away into the darkness without even touching down to see what they’d done.

Her heart lurched at the thought of what had happened to the men they’d torched without a second thought, and for what? They’d not even done it for their own purposes, but to win favor with a bear clan from the outside, a family that hadn’t lived here for years. What right did they have to turn back up here after all this time and attack a clan that had been here longer than any of those that opposed them?

Slowly, she made her way to the edge of the woods and slipped out, making her way to her friend’s house and shifting back into human form. She crept in the back door and grabbed some clean clothes from the laundry room, slipping into a pair of soft knit pants and a tank top before walking into the kitchen.

“Hey, honey. Where have you been?” Rebekah’s mom asked, her voice full of concern.

“I just went for a walk. I needed to clear my head.”

“I understand. I know it’s been rough the past few days for you. You must be worried sick about your fella.”

“He’s gone.”

“Gone?”

“All of them are gone. They brought in Dragons to do their dirty work for them.”

“Oh, honey. I’m so sorry,” the older woman replied, reaching out to hug her.

Maeve nodded and turned away. She should be crying, but she couldn’t. She felt something that she couldn’t quite explain inside. Rebekah appeared in the doorway and called out to her as she turned to walk away, but she ignored her. She made her way to her room to lie down, trying to push the sounds of the screams that filled her head into the abyss.

That had been several months ago. Like many of the women from her clan, she’d found a way to move on. Most of the clans here were sparse now. The Maguires had gutted them of their leadership, broken up their homes, and left them with next to nothing. Her clan no longer had an Alpha. In fact, it no longer had any men above the age of twelve. Anyone above that age had been enlisted to fight against the other clans.

Beyond the children, what remained were only the women not absorbed by the Maguire Clan as wives or mistresses. Those of a certain age had been relegated to doing laundry, cooking, and sewing as needed by Sorley, and later, Trill. Younger women had been forced into marriages, and young girls had been groomed for the same when they came of age. She had been one of the latter.

Now, she was free again, and like the other clans that were now free of the Maguires, they must rebuild. The question was how to do that with no Alphas other than children too young to lead. A meeting was called for some of the women to discuss what they could do to get their clan’s affairs in order. They weren’t technically Maguires as none of the women were of blood relation, and the children weren’t of an age to be a threat to anyone.

“Why do we need an Alpha?” Karla asked from the head of the table.

Today was the first meeting of their council—the handful of women remaining gathering together for the first time to discuss the future of their clan. Karla was the eldest and thus the one chosen to head up their discussions for now, but they would vote on a formal leader, though it might be a moot point as she didn’t see the local Alphas accepting an Omega in their fold.

“Because we are all Omegas. We’ve not been trained to lead. We lack the strength and standing,” Rebekah replied.

“Aye, but that doesn’t mean we can’t change,” Karla acknowledged.

“And what? Select an Omega as an Alpha of our clan? How does that work when we get challenged by an outside clan? Going up against an Alpha are you?” Rebekah said.

“Our Omega would not be an Alpha. She would always be an Omega and there is no reason for anyone to challenge us if we go about it right. We can join the new shifters council set up by the McNally Clan and they will provide us protection as a member,” Karla advised.

“What is it?” Ronan asked, walking toward the box his brother Olcan had open on the table in front of him and pulling back one of the half-closed flaps for a better view

“A warning,” Olcan replied as their brothers Fergus and Niall approached.

“Feckin’ Hell!” Ronan uttered, jerking his hand away from the box. “What are those? Ears?”

“Yep. Six of them.”

“Why?” Ronan asked, now joined by Fergus and Niall beside the box.

“A gift from the Maguires.”

“Who do they belong to?” Fergus asked, his face twisted into a mask of anger.

“Our spies, according to the bloody note included on top of them,” Olcan replied, picking up a piece of paper with dark splatters on the edges, holding it between two fingers for them to read.

“This blood is on your hands. We’ve sent what’s left of the bodies to their kin. They sang like birds between screams. War you wanted. War you have.”

“Fuck,” Fergus muttered.

“What do we do?” Ronan asked.

Despite being the slightest of the four McNally men, he was never one to back away from a fight. Always ready, some would say he was even eager for one.

“We fight,” Olcan replied solemnly.

“Fight how? The spies have been feeding back some information that already reflects that we are far outnumbered. Hell, we’re even out trained on the field of battle,” Niall said.

“We’ve done what we could in that arena,” Fergus barked.

“Aye. I know you’ve done the best you could, but we’re limited in numbers and we haven’t had the kind of freedom to train that they have in the old country. Not only have they been using their access to so many Omegas to multiply as rapidly as possible decade after decade, but they’ve absorbed any clans that might be willing to help,” Niall complained.

“They’ve not sucked them all in,” Olcan replied.

“Really? Like who?” Niall asked.

“Well, us, for one.”

“We ran away like cowards. Dad yanked us up and slipped away to America so they couldn’t get to us,” Niall reminded him.

“Yes, and if he hadn’t, we’d all be dead. You know that Sorley Maguire would not have let us live, and we were just boys. The auld fella couldn’t defend our mother and us.”

The mention of their mother and father drew silence for a moment. Whether they were all lost in memories or contemplation, Niall wasn’t certain.

When the Maguires had come for their clan, their life had changed in an instant, going from the four sons in line for their father’s role as Alpha to a rebirth on American soil as one of the most powerful Irish mafia families in Boston.

“Clan Byrne,” Fergus said, causing them all to look at him in surprise.

“Clan Byrne? Really? That’s who will save us?” Niall growled.

“No, not save, but help,” Fergus replied.

“Clan Byrne can’t even help themselves. They are nothing more than modern-day indentured servants to the Maguires. Most of their clan was destroyed alongside ours and they only exist because the Byrne’s have a use for them,” Niall objected

“What is that use?” Ronan asked.

“The Byrnes were left with mostly women and children—Omegas,” Fergus told them. “The men run guns for them up north, Belfast to Donegal.”

“How is that any help to us?”

“They can hide us while we do our own recon, prepare for what is to come,” Fergus replied, looking up at Olcan for his approval as Alpha.

“Our own recon?” Niall asked, eyebrows raised. “You are suggesting we go to Ireland and confront them on their own turf? That’s suicide.”

“I’m suggesting that we send out a small party to embed themselves within Clan Byrne to find out things firsthand,” Fergus replied, still watching Olcan for a response.

“Didn’t we already try that with spies?” Niall asked.

“Yes, but spies can’t bring together a bunch of families that we need to stand up for themselves. The battle is not between the Maguires and the McNallys. The battle is between the Maguires and everyone they’ve harmed. They broke up the families and taught them there would be further punishment if they defied their rule.”

“You think that we can go there and bring them around to reclaiming what was taken from them after all this time?” Olcan asked.

“I don’t know, but I can’t think of any other options that are on the table for us right now. We don’t have the numbers, and the only way to get them before they come for us is by rallying other families around our cause, eliminating the Maguires once and for all.”

“It’ll mean we have to take down Trill, first and foremost,” Olcan told him.

“Yes,” Fergus replied.

“I’ll do it,” Niall volunteered. “We can’t spend our lives looking over our shoulders like cowards.”

“You can’t. You’ll be brought to justice for taking out an Alpha in the old country. They play by different rules there. I’ll have to do it.”

“No. You have a family. You both have families,” Ronan replied. “Someone has to stay and keep people here safe. It should be you. You and Fergus have families. Niall and I don’t. Let us go and see what we see.”
I’m the new alpha of the Boston Bears. Imprinting on an omega was the last thing I wanted. I have the family business to run.
I need to dominate, and not show weakness. But when I’m around her I lose control. I cannot deny myself to her.
My Clan in Ireland wanted to use me as a baby maker. To escape that fate, I agreed to go to America and spy on the Boston Bears.

“IRELAND, HUH? YOU DON’T look Irish.”

Niamh scowled at the man. She wanted to snatch her passport out of his hands, but it would only cause a hassle that she didn’t need right now. She was too exhausted, and time was too tight. She had to be in Boston by morning, and this was the last bus for the night.

She wondered what it was about people that made them generalize about everyone they encountered. No one in Ireland ever told her she didn’t look Irish, but in the brief time she’d been in America, she’d heard it a half dozen times. It’s as if they expected everyone to have red hair and freckles, wearing overalls with a pot of gold stuffed under their arm like they were on the run from a naughty leprechaun.

In fact, more people in Ireland looked like Niamh than looked like what these people imagined when they perceived of Irish norms. She had long black hair and deep brown eyes, with olive skin—what some might refer to as Black Irish due to the darker complexions they possessed than their fairer-skinned counterparts.

Many people were descended from Spaniards that had been prominent in certain parts of the island and possessed a warmer complexion. That was more normal for Ireland than what most imagined, but it didn’t stop people like this goon from expressing their ignorance about Irish culture.

“Nye amph? Nymph?” the man continued, looking up at her with a disgusting smile.

“It’s pronounced Neev,” she replied, irritated

“It’s not spelled right.”

“It’s Gaelic and it’s spelled right fine. Can I get me ticket already?”

“Sure, Neev.”

She ignored his mocking tone and waited for him to finish processing her bus ticket to Boston. She was too tired to argue with people about her name today. A six-hour flight from Dublin plus the hours making her way through security on one end and immigration on the other had left her exhausted and cranky. It would be nice to just stay in New York for a few nights and recover, but she didn’t have time for all that.

Instead, she was in line waiting for this moron to do his job. At least she had gotten there in time, though she was cutting it close. Maybe she could catch a nap during the night trek to her final destination. Then, she’d have a bit of time to kill in the morning before her appointment there. She was nervous about that. If it fell through, she’d have to work out something else. Going back to Dublin a failure wasn’t an option she could afford.

She was relieved when he finally handed her a ticket and a claim check for the large suitcase she’d been lugging since the airport, but she still watched as the bus pulled in and they began putting luggage into the lower hold. She could see her case being wheeled out on a trolley and placed inside while she waited in line with the other passengers. She noted the bus was fairly empty when she finally was allowed to board, so she was lucky enough to get a seat to herself where she could stretch out and get what sleep she could.

Though she woke up several times during the trip, she’d managed to rest a bit before disembarking in Boston. She waited for the driver to remove the luggage of those not continuing on and retrieved hers from him, wheeling it inside the bus station to look for a bathroom where she could freshen up.

Her watch was still on Dublin time, but by her calculations, it was nearly five a.m. Her appointment wasn’t until nine, and she couldn’t check into the hotel until two. It was going to be another long day. She managed to find a bathroom and check her appearance before reemerging.

“Is there a place nearby to get a bite?” she asked someone who looked like they were perhaps cleaning staff.

“Au Bon Pain opens in a few minutes. Other than that, you can head out of the terminal and there are all sorts of places nearby.”

“Good on ya,” Niamh replied.

“Are you trying to kill some time before a flight or another bus?” the woman asked.

“Aye. I am.”

“You can store your luggage for the day with the Greyhound folks if you like. It’s up that way, but it doesn’t open until seven.”

“Oh, Ta. Splendid, that,” Niamh replied with a smile, heading in the direction of the eatery she could see in the distance.

A couple hours later, she was full of pastry and coffee and had her bags stored. She navigated her way out of the terminal and did a bit of looking around before hailing a cab to take her to the address she’d been given for her interview, arriving ten minutes early, but okay with that. She paid the driver and looked around at the neighborhood in which she found herself, marveling at the sizes of the houses and the space around them.

CHAPTER ONE

Fergus

“I’ll have no son of mine involved in this shite,” Cathal McNally roared at his four sons, standing up to slam his fist down on the table before walking toward the small bar that sat to one side of the dining room. His limp was more pronounced today and he looked incredibly frail for a man barely in his sixties. An enemy would do well not to let that fool them, though. He might not be the man he used to be, but he was still plenty lethal.

“Alpha, I know you want us to keep our noses clean as much as possible, but we can’t just let this go on our turf,” Fergus replied.

The dissent was met with an angry glare. Their clan might have been decimated by their enemies in Ireland, leaving them as the only surviving members, but he was still their Alpha and did not like to be challenged, not even by his own son. Fergus sighed and tried a new tactic.

“Alpha, if we don’t do something about this, we’ll lose control. We can nary afford to have that happen. Let us at least just look into it and see what is happening. If it doesn’t affect us, we’ll leave it be.”

Cathal looked at him, studying him for a moment before looking to his brothers. None of them spoke. They were a force to be reckoned with out on the streets, but they weren’t so quick to cross their father. If not for him, they’d not even be here. He had managed to move four young boys out of Ireland before they met the same fate as their mother and fallen clan brothers. They did nothing without his go-ahead.

“And you three? Do you agree with your brother?” he asked them.

They nodded their heads up and down at his question, angering him further.

“Do ya have feckin’ mouths?” he barked at them.

“Aye, Alpha. We’ve spoken. We’re in agreement,” Olcan replied, speaking on behalf of them all.

“Fine. Do what you feel you must, but bring trouble on this house, and you’ll be regretting it.”

Fergus nodded and motioned for his brothers to follow him out, leaving their father to the nightly glass of Jameson he allowed himself. Thea, their old nanny who had remained on to help care for their father, smiled at them as they passed her in the hallway, waiting for their exit before joining their father in the living room. They each paused to kiss her on the cheek as they passed by. She smiled and left them to their business, having learned a long time ago that the less she knew, the better.

“Hannigan’s?” Fergus asked as they filed out the front door of their fathers’ home behind him, receiving a chorus of agreements.

They had been going to Hannigan’s Pub since before they were old enough to even get in. You didn’t get asked for ID when you were Irish Mafia, especially not if you belonged to one of the most feared families in Boston. They’d fled Dublin as boys, but they’d quickly become men on the tough streets of this city. No one with any good sense gave them any guff. They’d recruited and grown, but it was only the four of them and their father who made up the heart of The Boston Bears.

People scattered as they walked into the place twenty minutes later. They took their usual booth in a dark corner to one side of the club, ordering pints as they scanned the room for anyone who might be a problem. It was pretty quiet in there tonight. They relaxed, at least as relaxed as they ever got, and settled into their beers while they discussed the problem at hand.

“I talked to some of those drugged-out wankstains down at the docks today. Someone is fucking up the waters with shite meth,” Fergus told them.

“Who is it?” Niall asked.

Niall was the younger of the two middle children, but often mistaken for being older due to his size. He wasn’t quite as big as Fergus, but he was of a size that was impressive enough that men cleared out of his way when they saw him coming.

“Don’t know, but they’re gonna stop. Hit up your payrolls and find out. I’m not having that on our turf,” Fergus replied, pausing to finish off his pint and hold up the empty mug toward their server, swirling his finger about as a signal for refills. She was a regular server here and knew the rules. Don’t interrupt but be watchful for requests.

He noted the way Ronan, their youngest brother, eyed the server as she brought over a round of fresh beers and bent over to take their empty glasses. A good bit of her cleavage was visible down the front of the white button-up shirt she wore but failed to button up very far. She was a few years older than him, but when had that ever stopped a McNally Bear from claiming what he wanted.
