Duke Webb has run the most successful bail recovery agency in Atlanta for over twenty years. That’s because he has a team of trained, competent hunters backing him up to keep his name feared on the streets. But Duke knows that nothing can go on forever. His hunters are in committed relationships and ready to settle down, and so is he. That’s what leads him to start his new training program.
“That’s the new vision for Dukes. Veterans operating and tracking behind the scenes with a new powerhouse apprehension team on the streets.”
Brian and Quick are the first to offer up two new recruits. Kellam Knight has studied martial arts under his sensei, Quick, since he was eight years old. A tossed-out reject from high-society, Kell has a problem fighting on the right side of the law. If he sees an injustice, he has to correct it. He doesn’t have to run and cower from his enemies anymore, he’s a fighter who can protect himself and others. When Quick offers Kell the opportunity to join Duke’s training program, he’s all in. Except he’s not prepared for the straight, over-confident, extremely disciplined, sexy man Brian has recruited to be his partner.
Tyrell Jenkins’ world was flipped upside down when his father never returned home from his last deployment. He’d been Ty’s teacher, mentor, his guide to living a righteous life as a good man. His father didn’t raise him to be like every other young, stereotypical male in Atlanta. Instead, he’s been taught to be respectful, to speak the language of real men. When Brian King – his father’s most trusted comrade – finally comes to him with the truth, he doesn’t come alone. He comes with trained men hidden in the shadows… and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to join a brotherhood unlike any other.

This installment is a part of a series and contains previously mentioned characters, but CAN standalone. Each book centers around a new couple.
This book ends in a HEA. NO cliffhanger.

Books in Series:

Bounty Hunters Series by A.E. Via Books

Ty

Ty checked behind and around him before he walked away from the ATM, staring at his deposit receipt. His savings account was looking great. He rubbed his hand over his low fade—an anxious habit. It wouldn’t be much longer before he was able to get the hell out of Atlanta’s clutches. The hood was no place for a disciplined man like himself. Every day was a struggle… a test. It was a regular occurrence, getting jumped, robbed or harassed. All the shit he’d had to endure in his short life and he’d never received a genuine ‘sorry’ from anyone. The US Government took the one thing in the world that had mattered to him and he never even got an explanation. Only a set of dog tags, a few medals—that meant nothing Ty without the man who’d earned them—and a perfectly folded American flag. After all this time he was still in the dark.

“If you depend on someone else for your wisdom, you’ll forever be ignorant, son.”

Ty blinked away the heartache every time he remembered his father’s words. It’d been nine years since his father had gone to a foreign land to fight for his country and never returned, but his no-nonsense voice was still as loud and strong as it had been the day he’d left for his last tour. Putting those thoughts to the back of his mind, he shifted his back pack on his shoulder and yanked opened the door to Sharain’s Styling World.

“Heyyy, Ty. How’s it going?” Sharain sang in a sultry voice from her booth closest to the door. She was putting long plastic rods in her customer’s hair as she gave him a good once over and tilted her head toward the back, silently telling him to wait in her office.

The smell of chemicals and shea butter hair products assaulted his senses, as well as the loud atmosphere. R&B pumped from a couple of speakers mounted on the wall in the corner and a television airing Real Housewives of Atlanta competed valiantly against the music. It resembled any other sista’s hair shop around Hotlanta’. Several stations lined the bright red walls, most of them occupied by a stylist. He didn’t make eye contact with the few women lingering in the salon on a Friday evening, no matter how much they tried to get a rise out of him. Literally. He heard his name called out but he didn’t turn around, instead staying focused on the reasons he was there. With his back straight and his eyes forward, he didn’t give the women his look. He felt it unnecessary. They were scantily dressed in low hung, tight halter tops, booty shorts or something shredded. They left nothing to his imagination, therefore he wasn’t interested. He closed the door behind him and waited in Sharain’s office like he’d been instructed.

When the door opened and the loud chattering flooded in, he assumed it was Sharain but it was Mo. Her tall frame filled the tight space of the doorway as she entered. She removed her black smock from around her waist and massaged her fingers. She did mostly braids and cornrows, but she was amazing with a set of clippers as well. “What’s up, Ty?” Her voice was still deep and raspy from the twenty-five years she’d lived as a man.

“’Coolin,” Ty said in a low bass. He rarely had a lot to say.

“A real man only speaks when he has something valuable to say.”

“’Chillin like always.” Mo laughed, her large Adam’s apple bobbing as she did. She came over and adjusted her long red wig in the mirror next to him. “So, I heard that you and Sharain been talking quite a bit. Don’t tell me that out of all the hoes around here that fawn over you, that you’ll choose that heffa.”

Ty didn’t comment. Idle shop gossip was all it was. Mo stared at him expectantly then rolled her eyes, the fake lashes making the movement even more dramatic. “I’m having a get together at my place next weekend and you know my favorite bachelor is invited.”

He was sure he wouldn’t go but he still said, “I appreciate the invite.”

“I know you ain’t coming, so don’t even try to give me that sexy tone.”

What tone? Ty kept his face impassive and his eyes on the spot behind Mo’s head, just to the right of her temple. He wouldn’t stare her down. She wasn’t his. His father had taught him how to properly show a woman respect. Regardless of whether she was transsexual, old, young or his queen, they all deserved it and he knew no other way to be.

“It’s not healthy for a man as good and as strong as you to be holed up in his apartment alone every night. No company, no ’lovin. Anyone would be beside themselves to have your attention.” Mo sighed and looked at Ty as if he were going through a social-life crisis and needed saving.
Men found him attractive, interesting even. He was like a fascinating experiment gone wrong that men liked to investigate. He’d get a date - or two, if he was lucky - but it wasn’t long before Brian’s darkness showed, and the men were running from him.
Brian King was honorably discharged from the United States Navy five years ago. He’d left with the highest honors a man can receive in his country, but he’d paid the ultimate price to earn them. He was considered one of the best; an Intelligence Officer in a Joint Special Operations Delta team that’d been a twelve-man wrecking crew. They’d thought they were invincible… until they weren’t. Brian was the only member that survived the ambush. He survived ten months of pain, of torture, only to emerge on the other side a warrior. A POW survivor. He’d returned home with all his limbs, his right mind, and with his only brother Ford, at his side. But, one thing had been lost, maybe for good… his voice.
Now, being a bounty hunter is Brian’s only means to satisfy his need to calculate, track, and capture. His only outlet to the stress caused by his silence. He was good at what he did. But, all work and no play for a forty-four year old man was taking its toll. Brian wasn’t a faulty experiment. He missed companionship, he missed communicating. So, when he met Sway Hamilton – in the most unconventional means – he’d been surprised at his special way of understanding Brian’s every look… and touch.
Sway grew up in the rough part of ATL, trailing behind his twin brother Stanton and his best friend, Dana. He and his brother had a bond only twins could understand. So when Stanton’s life was taken during their sophomore year in college, Sway didn’t think he’d ever recover. He finally finished school, got his masters in nursing, worked hard, and focused on taking care of his mother. However, Sway knew there was more to life than heartache, and caring for others. There had to be. But he didn’t know what any of those things were until he met a dark hunter that blew his mind… and the intense man had never uttered a single word.
Brian and Sway can feel the powerful connection between them. It was there from the start—but both of them have battled with loss and anguish for so long, neither understand that love can ease all of it. Do they have the courage to battle through it together? Sway has to learn to trust in love, and Brian has to believe that Sway will always understand him even if he never speaks again.
Sway held him tight around his neck, “I don’t need you to talk Brian. I can hear you just fine,” Sway whispered softly, kissing his throat.

This novel is a part of a series but can be read as a standalone. No cliffhangers.
Trigger Warning: This story contains acts of bond recovery agent violence. Mention of war zones and descriptions of war prisoners. This story DOES NOT contain overly-described acts of torture.
If Brian could’ve only told him he’d said the exact thing Brian had been thinking but couldn’t say. Brian pulled out his cell phone to open his text to voice app. He had to tell him.

“I’m gonna go to the restroom and clean up. I’ll… I’ll be right back,” he spoke hurriedly and took off into the sea of bodies and strobe lights.

Brian finished righting his clothes. His guy was running, and Brian was going to run after him. As soon as he left his corner and his eyes adjusted to the strobe-lighting in the packed warehouse, Brian saw the flashlights first before he heard the harsh commands of authoritative voices. Great. The police. He hurried in the direction he was sure his date had gone. He was glad he was tall, he’d be able see over most of the frantic people that flittered about in various stages of undress as they scurried for any exit not blocked by police in raid gear.

He wasn’t concerned about the police. Even if he was arrested, Vaughan would get him out before they could process him all the way. The man was a brilliant lawyer. Brian found the door marked Men’s Room and burst inside to warn his guy that they had to leave, but to his dismay, no one was there. He was gone.

Commotion and chaos went on just outside the door, but he was oblivious. Brian stared at the empty stalls, refusing to believe that he’d taken a risk for nothing. He’d opened up to a stranger. Let him touch his ailment, his weakness. Refused to hide. Why wasn’t his angel there like he said he’d be? Brian walked past each open stall just to be sure. When he got to the last door, he knew he wouldn’t find him in there but his heart still sank when he pushed the door open to find it empty. Wincing, Brian realized he was squeezing the hell out of his phone. He looked at the screen, the app still up and waiting for him to type what he needed to say. Too late. There was no one there for him to talk to. Not now, maybe not ever. He’d run away from Brian… like they all did. They were scared of him. Scared of his silence… and so was he.

The air was brisk for a January night. Street lights barely worked in this neighborhood, which was an optimal setup for hunters like him. Brian stealthily eased his tall frame back into the shadows on the side of the house while his team got into position. Duke’s Bail Bonds and Recoveries had the best fugitive recovery team on the east coast, hell could’ve been the best in the country. They’d outsourced to taking private contracts, hiring Duke and his squad of trackers to recover for other bond companies whose clients chose to skip court and jump bail.

Brian liked working for Duke. It satisfied his need to track, investigate… be useful. Like he’d been in the Special Forces. Duke was a solid guy. He ran a tough ship, but he was fair and they’d established a solid brotherhood.

Brian pressed his body against the crumbling vinyl siding, his heavy boots sinking into the soft earth as he made himself invisible. His job was to listen, survey, observe, and he was damn good at it. He’d been watching the small single-family home on Pavilion Street for almost two weeks straight. He didn’t mind all the extra hours, or the overtime pay. There wasn’t anything else in his life more important. He was one of the only hunters left on their team who had no partner. No significant other. Nothing at home waiting for him except lots of empty rooms, a bare fridge and an even emptier bed. So, he didn’t mind covering the grunt work. Besides his older brother, Ford, there wasn’t a better profiler than him.

“The back is all clear.”

Brian heard his brother’s deep voice in his ear right before the Alpha team sounded off that they were ‘a go’ too. The next sound Brian registered was Duke’s right-hand man, Quick, kicking in the front door while his brother and his partner Dana stormed in through the rear. The explosion of the door frame, coupled with a stun grenade thrown into the open space just past the door tried to yank him back to a real battle zone… the war zone. He blinked past the horrific images that flashed before him like the opening sequence of a Marvel movie. So many of them trying to bombard him. He wouldn’t let his mind take him there, he still had a small amount of control over it. Instead, he gritted his teeth and listened through the coms for background noise. There was a lot to decode. Men’s curses, women’s screams and his team’s angrily barked commands.
Duke Morgan owns and operates one of the largest bail bond companies in Atlanta. Not only does he bond criminals out of jail, he and his notorious group of bounty hunters will also track them down and ensure they show up for court.
Roman ‘Quick’ Webb is Duke’s business partner and best friend. Both men are in their forties and have given up on the happily ever after with the ranch-style home, and white picket fence. They’d both tried it and failed miserably. But they have their friendship and they have the business.
When Quick’s son, Vaughan Webb returns – after seven years - from studying abroad with his law degree in hand, he’s back to claim what he’s always wanted…his fathers’ best friend… Duke Morgan. Vaughan has always claimed to be a classic gentleman with an old soul. He didn’t party and screw up in school like his buddies. He was focused and dedicated to becoming the man worthy of Duke’s love.
It’s a complex and messy situation as Duke and Quick figure out how to still be best friends when one of them is sleeping with his friend’s one and only son. But when Duke is hurt on the job, all the unimportant trivialities fall to the wayside and Vaughan and Quick put their heads together to save Duke.
Part I of the Promises story is about Duke and Vaughan and DOES NOT end on a cliffhanger. Part II is about Quick and Dr. Chauncey and their realization that it’s not too late for any of them to find love

“Get 'em before he goes in that house Duke!” Quick’s deep voice could be heard a half block away. Knowing that his long-time trusted friend was there always made doing the job that much easier. Quick was not only his best friend, but his most efficient bounty hunter. He rarely made mistakes and his retrievals were almost always clean.

Duke saw his bail skipper clear the four-foot fence, running full speed towards a small, ranch-style home whose front yard was littered with toys. Oh no. Not kids. Duke only had a second to decide if he could clear that gate. He wasn’t a spring chicken at forty-five years old and aging–what felt like every day. Duke pumped his legs faster and leaped into the air, his back foot just grazing the top of the fence. He landed harder than he wanted, losing speed as he righted himself. Fuck me, that hurt.

The young bail skipper dodged a few toys but face planted into the kiddie pool when he turned to gauge Duke’s distance. Double-timing it, Duke hurled himself forward and collided with the kid’s back, sending him back down to the wet grass with an angry thud. Air left Duke’s lungs with the impact, but he didn’t have time to rest. He scrambled to get the scared kid’s hands behind his back.

“Stop fighting, Troy,” Duke hissed. “It’s over. It’s over.”

After tussling for a few more seconds, Quick was there, coming down on one knee and helping secure the skip’s other arm. “Easy kid. Easy,” Quick grumbled, his voice like something out of a scary movie.

Duke let Quick take over and crab walked backwards, plopping down on his ass to drop his head between his knees, still gasping for breath.

“You alright over there?” Quick laughed, his green eyes glistening with humor, while zip tying their skip’s hands behind his back.

“Yeah, I’m good, man. But that fuckin’ fence wasn’t a great idea.” Duke huffed a breath.

When they heard the sound of tires squealing, Duke and Quick both rolled their eyes. “Why the fuck does he always do that?”

“Beats the fuck out of me.” Duke shrugged. “It’s like the cliché scene in action movies; when the cavalry comes barreling up the street, lights and sirens blaring—after all the shit has already gone down.”

Quick pulled their skip up to his feet. “When you gonna let Charlie go, man? He’s not feeling this anymore, Duke, and you know it. He hardly shows up to the office, much less for recon; which is his damn job.”

Duke raised his hand, cutting off Quick’s tirade, because he knew the man could go on for days. “I’m not firing him. He was my dad’s right hand man, and when I took over this business I swore that Charlie would always be welcome.”

“This is a business, Duke. Now that Judge is gone and you’re back in the field again, we all need to be capable, or someone’s gonna get hurt. This ain’t a barbershop, dude. No loitering,” Quick urged.

“Shut up. Here he comes.”

“Duke.”

“We’ll talk about this later. Now shush.”

“Boss, you okay? Got here as fast as I could. There was traffic on Cascade Ave,” Charlie said, out of breath, like the short walk from the truck to the yard where they waited took a lot out of him.

“You do know you can put the siren on and go through the traffic, right?” Quick said sarcastically. Duke shot his friend a warning scowl.

“I didn’t want to scare anyone,” Charlie said defensively.

Duke stood up. “It’s cool, Charlie. Here. Load our skip up and get him ready for transport. Call County and let ‘em know we’re coming in.”

“Duke, please. I was gonna go to court. I swear,” Troy whined.

Duke shook his head sadly. Troy was only twenty years old. He’d been arrested more than a few times on petty drug charges since he was seventeen, and Duke had bailed him out every time. But this was the fourth time in two years that Troy hadn’t shown up for court, and instead of Duke taking Troy’s mom’s car – which she’d used as collateral this time – he chose to pick him up. Bail skippers were the most unpredictable defendants they dealt with. They made a million promises to get out on bail, but once they were released they had no loyalty.

“Your court date was nine days ago, Troy. You are breaking your momma’s heart. She hasn’t seen you in days. Getting off these streets is the best thing for you right now, buddy. You’re gonna have to stay behind bars until your next appearance is scheduled.”

Quick and Duke stood there talking while Charlie ambled over to the large, gutted-out Silverado and loaded Troy into the back.

“He should’ve retired ten years ago.” Quick checked his weapons while they walked back to Duke’s truck.

“Maybe. But everyone doesn’t retire at sixty anymore,” Duke said wearily.
Roman “Quick” Webb is one badass bounty hunter on the crime-filled streets of Atlanta. He’s fearless when it comes to carrying out his dangerous job alongside his longtime best friend and business partner, Duke. However, there is one thing that has begun to cause Quick concern and it’s the dreadful thought of living out the rest of his life alone. Seeing his best friend and his son fall in love and sharing the special connection that only true soulmates can, has made him all the more aware of what’s lacking in his life.
Love.
Dr. Cayson Chauncey has been wildly attracted to the big, tattooed hunter for almost a year, ever since he performed the surgery that saved Quick’s best friend’s life. Cayson must’ve mistaken Quick’s gratitude for something more, because the one time he tried to make his desires known, he was harshly rebuffed and left on the man’s doorstep feeling stupid for hitting on an obviously very straight man.
Cayson never dated a man who was willing to come out of hiding and be with him. Now at almost forty, Cayson is intent on no longer being anyone’s dirty secret. Having experienced countless disappointments, and having taken a stand not to fall for any more tricks, Cayson is more than a little skeptical when Quick comes around asking for a second chance to prove himself. The gorgeous man had already made it clear that he was not interested in Cayson… or so he’d thought.
Dr. Chauncey stirred up Quick’s suppressed, most carnal desires from a place deep down inside of him. He’d reacted so badly the first time that now his sexy surgeon wanted nothing to do with him. It was going to take a fair amount of patience and a whole lot of wooing involved as Quick sets out to convince Cayson that he’s worth another chance and that he is the brave lover who Cayson has been looking for.
With a scorned ex and a very dangerous job thrown into the mix, Cayson’s happiness and all of Quick’s promises may not be as easy to keep as they’d hoped.

Books in Series:

Bounty Hunters Series by A.E.
Quick slid out of his Range Rover, squinting up at the light breaking through the dawn. He loved this time of the day. Quiet, peaceful. Before the hustle and bustle of the laborers in the city began their day. Atlanta in the winter was beautiful to him, January and February being his favorite months. Most of the leaves had fallen from the trees, and as he walked, he enjoyed the loud crunch they made under his black, steel toe boots. He let his long hair hang for a while, the still-damp strands sending a pleasant chill through him. Propping himself against the large Magnolia tree next to their modest one-story building, he inhaled the smell of nature before it was time to pick up Atlanta’s trash . If he still smoked, it’d be a great time to inhale a few drags to calm his mind. But, since he didn’t, inhaling the big city air would have to do. It was probably just as toxic.

He saw that Duke’s midnight black F350 was already in its usual spot, closest to the side entrance. He’s sure here early. His friend had begun to sleep in on some mornings, he’d been on two brief vacations, and Quick had lost count on the unscheduled days off Duke now took at will.

Duke wasn’t only his best friend since they were still young enough to chase tail; he was also his business partner – and almost son-in-law. Yep, they were a typical American family. It’d been a couple months since Quick’s one and only son confessed his love for his best friend and saved his life by giving one of his kidneys to Duke while he was on his death bed. Now the two were connected in a way that was immune to destruction and disgustingly sweet.

Regardless, Quick was happy for his friend. His son Vaughan had always been a levelheaded, determined individual. Though Vaughan was ten years younger than Duke, he had to admit that they were perfect together. Quick and Duke were both in their early forties, but the new pep in Duke’s step made him look younger and more striking every day. It was about time one of them got their happily ever after. Duke had always been more romantic than him, though. Quick was accustomed to his comfortable, isolated life. He went to work, caught bad guys, kicked ass, hung with buddies here and there, and then went home… alone. He could do that for the rest of his life. Adding another person into the mix only complicated shit.

“Rome! You going to work today, or not? Out here sight-seeing at nothing.” Duke’s deep voice yelled from the open door.

Quick threw up his middle finger before pushing off the base of the massive tree and making his way up the bricked walkway. “Can’t a man have a few minutes of peace?”

“Not on my fucking dime, he can’t. Now get in here, we have two skips today and Dana is heading over to Fulton to do a bond.” Duke was rattling off the day’s business, already in full steam ahead mode. His energy level through the roof at five a.m. Pfft. I wonder why.

Quick’s steps were heavy along the all-wooden floor. He made a beeline for the still-dripping pot of coffee and poured himself a large cup, not caring about interrupting the flow. He’d slept like shit last night. Although Vaughan hadn’t lived with him very long after he returned from law school, he’d still liked the idea of cooking for two again, of sitting on the patio and discussing his day with his son while they drank a few brews. That had actually been pretty cool. But Vaughan had moved in with Duke fairly fast, so Quick found himself arriving earlier for work than usual and was typically the last to leave.

Duke was going on about where they were headed, but Quick only had one ear tuned in, his other was on… well, anything besides Duke. He dropped down into his chair and spun until his back was to his friend and he could focus on the serenity of the morning outside the large window.

“…Should be a clean pick up. Brian and Ford will be here any minute and we’ll roll out.” Duke finished up, and Quick nodded, still facing the window. He liked going out with the two brothers. They were efficient, sharp, and most of all, strong as oxen. It didn’t even bother him that Brian had yet to speak a word to any of them, still using sign language as his means of communication. Quick’s head jerked up when he heard the door open, expecting it to be the towering brothers. It wasn’t.

“Vaughan, what are you doing here?” Quick stood and hugged his son. They’d just seen each other the night before for dinner, but a hug was their customary greeting. Quick looked his son up and down, frowning at his attire. Noting that he was again dressed like a model, not a lawyer. His blue suit matched the light gray dress shirt he wore under a white and gray vest. No tie and ridiculously expensive gray suede shoes.
A bounty hunter’s partners to lovers’ story. The hunt is on… and he’s the prey.
Bradford (Ford) King was sure he had the rest of his life mapped out. Though he was no longer a SEAL Lieutenant, his brother was home safe and he had a job that still allowed him to satisfy his hunger for hunting bad guys. Life was simple, no distractions or complications – at age forty-six – that’s all Ford wanted. What he didn’t want was his work partner, sniper/watchman, Dana, giving him s**t all the time.
Dana Cadby had grown up labeled a roughneck from the wrong side of the tracks. He’d fought, scrounged, and survived despite a father that constantly told him he couldn’t. Dana pulled himself up by his own boot straps and made a name for himself in the marksman community. He’d been Duke’s bounty watchman for five years. It was his job to ensure their safety, watch their backs. At thirty-three, he was trusted, well respected by his peers, his bosses, his friends… so why couldn’t he earn the same respect from his partner?
Dana knew he was bisexual before he graduated high school. He also knew he was attracted to the huge, 6’3”, SEAL from the moment he and his brother came to join their team. It wasn’t easy for him to tamp down his immediate reaction to Ford’s thick muscles, full beard, and dark eyes. Still, Dana exhibited nothing but professionalism towards him, not wanting to make his ‘straight’ partner uncomfortable. So why did Ford constantly give him hell?
After Dana took back his ex-girlfriend, he’d noticed an intensification in Ford’s bad attitude. One that turned aggressive and downright antagonistic, and Dana was damned if he’d just lay down and take it. He was gonna make that man respect him if it was the last thing he did.
When Duke sends Dana and Ford out to track down their most dangerous bounty yet, they both embrace the fact that they make one hell of a team… but they fight tooth and nail against the powerful intimacy brewing between them.
Beware: If Ford and Dana connect completely, god help the fugitive who’s in the sights of the hunter and his watchman.
This story is a part of a series but can stand alone. It does not end on a cliffhanger and has a HEA.

Ford walked into the busy restaurant with his brother close to him, just a half step behind, like always. Both of them ignored the heads that turned when they moved towards the hostess stand. It wasn’t uncommon for people to stare. They weren’t drop dead gorgeous, they were just huge. At first glance they could be mistaken for twins, but Ford was two years older than Brian. Both of them stood at six three and a half, with thick upper bodies and solid thighs to match. Courtesy of twenty-two years in the military. Ford would probably still be leading his SEAL team if he hadn’t been court-martialed and dishonorably discharged five years ago.

“How many in your party tonight?” The wide-eyed hostess asked when Ford approached. He watched her take in his form before responding.

“Just two,” Ford answered.

“Do you mind the bar area? We have a high top ready now.” She smiled.

Ford looked back at Brian, who gave a curt nod.

“That’s fine,” Ford answered.

She scribbled a couple marks on the dry erase board on her podium and picked up two menus before politely asking them to follow her.

His heavy motorcycle boots were loud on the hardwood floor. The thick silver link chain that hung from his belt loop wasn’t attached to his wallet, but to the gold bounty hunter’s badge in his back pocket. A few men sitting at the bar gave them the side eye as if they needed to watch their backs, but he and Brian weren’t the bad guys… they only looked like it. They missed nothing as they took their seats and waited for the hostess to place their menus in front of them. Ford was already scanning the patrons, looking for anything out of the ordinary, while Brian made sure all entries and exits were clear. They weren’t paranoid, it was just years of conditioning and training which had made vigilance an ingrained habit.

“What you feel up to tonight, man?” Ford asked Brian.

Brian shrugged, picking up his menu. They’d been here often. It was one of their favorite restaurants. It was a chain establishment, nothing too fancy. On their rare days off he liked to go out and eat with his brother instead of ordering in or microwaving something.

“I’m sure you’re ordering a burger.” Brian signed to him.

“No, smart ass. I’m getting a steak tonight… I’ve earned it. This was one shitty week,” Ford answered. He didn’t have to sign back to Brian, who could hear just fine. His brother wasn’t deaf, he suffered from selective mutism.

Brian smirked at him and glanced back down at the menu insert. The waiter came over with a broad smile on his face, his eyes fixed on Brian when he spoke.

“Evening. You men look like you brought your appetites tonight.”

It couldn’t have been more obvious that their server was gay. His soft features, sweet voice and blond highlights were hard to mistake. Brian looked the waiter up and down, showing that he liked what he saw, and their server definitely noticed it, his delicate cheeks tinging a faint shade of pink. Ford knew the young guy was going for friendly and personable, but Ford wasn’t in the mood. He kept his face stoic when he answered. “Yeah, we’re ready. Give me whatever ale you got on draft tonight—”

“And for you, sir? Or would you like the special tonight?” The waiter cut Ford off, eager to focus on the more handsome brother.

“He’ll have the same,” Ford bit off.

Brian looked at him with a slight frown then looked back at the confused waiter. It had to seem odd that Ford was possessively answering for his brother. They looked too much alike to be on a date. It was clear they were related. Usually, Brian didn’t care either way. He didn’t speak and it was rare he wanted to use his text to speech device when they were out together. Ford noticed that lately his brother had been putting a little distance between them and he couldn’t figure out why. He wasn’t Brian’s keeper, but it’d been his job to look out for him since they were knuckleheads back on the farm in West Virginia.

“Sure. I’ll be right back with those.” The waiter murmured and walked off.

Brian was glaring at him. Ford barked a hushed, “What?” He could see a slight tick in Brian’s jaw. “What, Brian?”

“Nothing, damnit.” Brian signed with a couple of jerks of his right hand.

The waiter returned with their brews just when Brian put his hand down. The glint of arousal that had been present in the petite waiter’s hazel eyes was now replaced with sorrow. This was what Ford hated, what he wished he could protect his brother from. When people looked at Brian like a man to be pitied. His brother was fierce and brave, not to mention one of the smartest men he knew. But all people thought of him when they saw him signing was “Aww, poor thing can’t talk.”
