Forced to leave culinary school, the job she needs and the home they made together. Gwen finds a knight in the most unlikely source. Caleb's brother Nathan. A complex man with a phobia she doesn't understand and mannerisms that aren't of this day and age, will she be able to melt his seemingly frozen heart and become his friend? Looking over my shoulder I smile at each individual imprint my feet have left behind. Footprints are an amazing thing, even the ones you can’t see. They make you wonder who’s walked right where you’re walking. Who’s travelled this same path? What were their concerns? Who did they love? Are they still alive?

Life is so beautiful.

Everything is good right now. No. Everything is great. It’s peaceful. I’m happy.

“Can I walk with you?” An unfamiliar voice asks from two steps behind me.

I glance at the male. My heart stops.

I stare at him, at his face, at his eyes that are a light brown I can’t name. A shade away from milk chocolate. I lose myself in them so easily, so quickly, the sounds all around dim and my heart seems to be beating in my head.

He smiles slow and easy, his entire face lights up with the motion. So handsome, so beautiful. The way the light hits his long dark hair. Not too long but long enough to tuck behind his ears.

The sun catches every curve and contour of his sculpted chest. His lean body like none I’ve ever seen before.

“Wow,” I blurt and my face heats.

Why did I say that?

There’s no denying the fact I’m probably as red as a tomato.

His smile widens, his eyes crease at the corners, “I’m Caleb.”

“Caleb,” I repeat his name, it tastes good, feels good. I want to say it again. “I’m Gwen.”

“It’s great to meet you Gwen,” his smile doesn’t falter, not until he brings my knuckles to his mouth and plants the softest kiss upon them. He can’t be older than twenty, yet he’s already a gentleman.

I’m never washing this hand again. Once he releases it I look at the sand beneath my feet and tuck my hair behind my ear with the same hand. Fighting off the urge to touch the spot he just sweetly kissed.

“Can I walk with you?” He adds, his easy smile now contagious. He looks so happy and carefree. I’ve never met a person so seemingly happy. It oozes off him in waves, so much that I can almost see its glow coming from his body.

“Are you going to murder me?” Shut up! You sound like an idiot!

“If I answer that question will you believe me? I mean, either way you won’t know I’m telling the truth until I’ve started the sick and twisted process a murderer would probably be cooking up in their head right now,” he takes a step closer, two shallow dimples now appearing in his cheeks as he grins with his mouth closed.

“Good point,” I laugh, giving him a smile of my own.

“There it is,” he grins and stops me with his hands on my arms, the contact of his warm palms and fingers against my cool flesh sends tingles to places I didn’t know existed until now. He turns me to face him, blocking the sun with the back of his head. I look up, almost unable to see him due to the shadow cast between us.

“There what is?” I purse my lips, trying not to smile.

“The moment you steal my heart,” he announces, his eyes twinkling, his hands remaining on my shoulders.

I want to gasp but fortunately I don’t. I’m not totally sure what to say. “Huh?” So I say something stupid clearly.

“I knew, the minute I saw you walking down the sand I had to know you,” he leans in closer, as if preparing to tell me a secret. “And then you looked over your shoulder and smiled. You smiled at nothing. I knew I was yours.”

“You’re mine?”

He chuckles and turns me to face the front so we can walk side by side again, “Yep. I’m all yours. Be gentle with me, I’m not as strong as I look.”

I know he’s joking, he’s fooling around. He’s clearly crazy, “So Gwen is short for Guinevere huh?”

I nod, glancing at him out of the corner of my eye, “Caleb is just Caleb right?”

The smile remains on his face, how I wish I could just smile that beautifully all of the time, “Yep. And how old are you Gwenny?”

“Gwenny?” I snort, quirking a brow at him.

“Well, I’ve given you my heart I figure the next thing I need is a pet name. What’s mine going to be?”

Umm… “Umm…”

He waves me off, “That doesn’t matter. Those are details we can figure out another time. So… age?”

“Are you profiling? Making sure I’m the right target for your list of victims? What is it I have in common with the others? Is it my green eyes or my sparkling youth?”

He throws his head back and laughs, it’s a beautiful sound. “You know Gwenny?” His arm slides around my shoulder as casually as if we’d known each other years. “I think I gave my heart to precisely the right person. What a glorious day this is.” Pulling me tighter to him I smell the scent of coconuts lingering on his skin. No doubt it’s the scent of his sunblock, but it’s delicious all the same. “I’m twenty. Just turned twenty, two weeks ago.”
She doesn't know how to deal with it, knowing it could be her that saves him, but not wanting to betray Caleb, who still holds the largest piece of her heart.

I’ll be sending Jeanine to collect Dillan for me on Thursday the eighth. Please have him ready with enough supplies for the weekend. I’ll send him back the following Monday. If this date is an issue for you, please contact Jeanine; I know you both still talk.

Regards

Nathan.

A torrent of emotions flit through me as I grip the perfectly written, letter sized note in my hands, ready to screw it into a ball and throw it at something.

How dare he?

After everything he put me through, after the way he just left us without a second glance, suddenly he wants to see Dillan? He’s so infuriating.

Does he honestly think I’ll just let him take Dillan without speaking to me first? Without explaining anything first? He’s crazy.

I immediately type out a text to Jeanine, feeling a little better when I send it.

Guinevere: Please tell Nathan I respectfully decline his request to take Dillan for four nights. If he wants to see his nephew he can come and collect him personally. This is nothing against you; I just don’t feel comfortable using you as a go between, especially when it concerns my son’s welfare.

My anger dissipates for a few seconds when a thought comes to mind that shocks me. I instantly push it away, cursing myself for thinking something so vile about a man who, even though he’s been mean as of late, has always been there for Dillan and I, even when it was clear that he didn’t want to be.

Nathan will never be his Grandfather. Not all abuse victims end up as abusers themselves. I can’t believe I even entertained the idea.

That’s not the issue here; the issue is that I’m finally getting on with my life. I’ve got an amazing job at a bakery around the corner called ‘Valentine’s’ where I’m working for a lovely elderly lady called Valentine. Best cakes in town. My mum and I are finally in a good place and I’m enjoying being a mum myself. Dillan is happy and is thriving as much as a baby can. I love him so much.

Nathan let go of me! Not the other way around. He doesn’t get to decide anything. It’s not my fault that I saw what I saw. I didn’t deserve his treatment then and I definitely don’t deserve it now.

Pain slices through my chest when I think back to the DVDs I discovered, showing me the vile things that will forever plague my mind.

The sound of my phone snaps me from the horrendous images that I wish I could forget. I pick it up with a trembling hand and sigh with relief at her response. I was worried she’d find my text offensive.

Jeanine: I told him this but he wouldn’t listen. I’ll pass the message along.

I wonder how he’ll react. I can already imagine his lips thinning to a white line as his hands fist by his sides.

Good. I hope he gets angry.

Guinevere: Thank you :)

Is it wrong that I still miss him?

My mum comes upstairs and pokes her head into the room. “Everything okay?”

I shrug. “Yeah.”

“Was it from Nathan?” It’s obvious because I never get mail, especially not handwritten mail.

I nod and sigh. “Yeah.” He hates me.

“We’ll talk about it soon; I’m going to be late for work.” she ducks back out of my room and moments later I hear the shower running.

Dillan starts to stir and I take a moment to feed him and change him. Whenever I’m tending to him, my thoughts stay on him. I know I should stop using him as a distraction and face my jumbled thoughts, but I don’t want to.

My mum suggested I keep a journal but I’d fill the book in less than a day. I worry too much.

When Dillan is settled on my bed, on his back between my open legs, I read the letter again and curse Nathan in my mind. I don’t fully understand why he refuses to acknowledge me. I get that I saw something I shouldn’t have, but does he not want to see me because of embarrassment or shame?

If so, doesn’t he realize he has nothing to be ashamed of? Nothing that happened to him was his fault.

My phone alerts me to another text.

Jeanine: He says to stop being ridiculous, he wants to see his nephew. (His words, not mine. I’m with you on this.)

Guinevere: Is he kidding? Please tell me he’s kidding. Tell him, from me, to go and bleep himself. If he wants to see Dillan he can come to me personally. Otherwise he’s not having him. Tell him it’s that way or no way.

Dillan gurgles and I smile, “Yep, all of this fuss is because so many people love you.” Even though I’m shocked that Nathan got in touch at all, I’m also relieved that he still wants to see Dillan. They had a strong bond. Nathan really stepped up and acted like a Daddy to Dillan. I don’t want to stop their contact but, after the way we parted, I need to know that Nathan is mentally stable enough to look after him.
The honeymoon period for Nathan and Gwen is over, their babies growing and their careers running full steam ahead. Some would say communication is the key to a successful relationship but for a man that never had to communicate and a woman that needs it too much, how will they succeed? The challenges they face, the little free time they have and the call of their children cause problems in their efforts. Is their love strong enough to face it all or will circumstance and outside forces tear them apart?

Something crashes; it sounds like Dillan’s toy train against the door. At least I hope it’s his toy train. The destructive little sod that he is has broken more dishes than we own.

“He’s possessed.” I hear Nathan yell and smile when tiny feet hammer across the wooden floor, followed by the sound of larger ones. Dillan’s little giggle echoes through the large house. Snort. “He’s possessed!”

“I heard you!” I shout down the stairs, stifling my laughter. I gently ease Emily, our gorgeous one-year-old baby girl, out of her cot bed and carry her down the stairs.

“Mama,” she coos softly and rests her head on my shoulder. Her fingers go to her mouth and she sucks on them as we watch Dillan race through the hallway, his little bare butt wriggling as he passes. His laughter is evil. He knows exactly how much trouble he’s causing. He just loves to wind up his daddy.

“I swear on all that is holy…” Nathan stops beside me and we both watch Dillan slam the kitchen door. He sighs and turns me into his arms, squishing Emily between us. She squawks uncomfortably so I place her on the ground and tilt my head back to receive his kiss. “You need to go.”

“I know.” I press my lips to his and smile when I feel his fingers drift over my cheek and into my hair. “Will you be okay?”

“Uh-oh.” Emily sounds and Nathan stiffens.

“You little…!”

I turn and pinch my lips together when I see Dillan holding his top up with his hands, releasing a stream of pee aimed at the wall by the kitchen door.

He takes off running, giggling like the crazy little bugger that he is.

“Dillan.” I chastise. “Now daddy is going to have to bleach everything!”

I grab Emily before she can crawl to the puddle and splash in it. Yes, this has happened before.

“He’ll be potty trained soon. Keep persevering.” I assure Nathan, who has Dillan in his outstretched arms.

Nathan glares at me so I take this as my cue to leave.

“I love you!” I yell at them all before depositing Emily on the floor and rushing from the house.

Today is my First day training to be a chef after leaving Valentine’s only three weeks ago. I’ve only been working part time since Emily became eight months old so I know how challenging this new venture is going to be.

Kerim Dal, the leading chef in the UK is training me. ME! He’s a culinary genius. I’ve tried and tested ninety percent of his recipes and I issue my stamp of approval for everything but one weird minty aubergine creation. I wasn’t a fan of that one but I’m sure if I had the taste buds for it I would have loved it.

If I could happy squeal and clap my hands while driving, I would so do that right now.

It’s not until I’ve pulled up outside the restaurant ‘Little Ambrosia’ that my nerves really begin to kick in. The building is fancy, huge and… did I say fancy? For an untrained chef to start here is unreal. I am extremely fortunate.

My phone vibrates in my pocket and I pull it out, using the moment of distraction to collect myself.

Sasha: You got this.

Mum: Bring me the leftovers.

Nathan: We love you. I love you and I am so proud of you.

Nathan’s is the only one I respond to.

Gwen: Thank you Spongebob. <3

Tucking my phone into my bag, I climb out of my car and make my way to the entrance. According to the instructions I received, an outfit will be waiting for me in the staffroom by the kitchen.

Where’s the kitchen?

The lobby is huge; the walls are little more than glass panel doors with net curtains drawn to the sides. I move to the first set that leads into the large room. It stinks of money. The theme seems very royal and flowery. Heavy-looking chairs surround large round tables that are surrounded by smaller round tables. There are no booths here but there are tables in the corner, partially hidden beyond six-foot-tall dividers that offer a little more privacy.

“No!” I hear bellowed and a pan clatters loudly from the back of the room. I spot the kitchen through a large gap in the wall. Of course the kitchen staff will be open to view. That doesn’t make me more nervous at all. “You don’t put sweet potatoes and parsnips in with lamb. It’s too sweet!”

My teeth find my lower lip and bite down hard. My feet suddenly feel leaden. I’m not sure I can move.

Gwen: This place is legit cool. It’s like… billion-dollar cool.

Sasha: And Nathan hasn’t taken you yet?

I watch as two men in chef’s whites wave frantically at each other and shout in another language as a female in a matching white double breasted coat stirs something in a pan over one of the many stoves. My mouth drops open when the man on the left, who I recognise as Kerim Dal, grabs the guy on the right, who I think is his Executive chef and cousin – thank you Wikipedia – and throws him three feet backwards before throwing another dish at the wall. A dish full of food. Is this how they behave when the restaurant is full?
