We fell back into our old lives.

Laundry. Dishes. Cooking. Getting coffee at the café down the street.

But we barely talked to each other.

It seemed like neither one of us was ready to share the details of our separation. She had been a slave at the camp, witnessing unspeakable things, and I had been in a palace, living a life of luxury with expensive clothes and a butler.

My old clothes didn’t quite fit me the way they used to because Gilbert was right. I’d gained some weight. My old clothes were also cheap, so they didn’t fit me the way the custom designer clothing did. The guest bedroom was uncomfortable because the sheets were low quality—and there wasn’t a man next to me.

A few days later, we had breakfast together. I sat on the stool at the kitchen island while she stood across from me. Now that Raven was no longer at the camp, she ate whatever she wanted. Right now, she whipped up fluffy pancakes and fries.

I ate across from her and sipped my coffee, which had tones of pumpkin, nutmeg, and cinnamon. It was February now, but it still felt like December, the month when we were taken. My thoughts drifted to Fender often, wondering if he was sitting at his desk in his office, shouting at someone in French or just sitting there staring at the fire.

Or was he thinking about me?

Raven cut into her pancakes but didn’t take a bite. “You can talk to me…if you want to talk about it.”

I kept my eyes on my coffee, the dollop of cream sitting on top. “I don’t want to talk about it.” Those dark eyes were in my dreams. Sometimes, I felt big hands grip me around the waist, but it was just my imagination. There were times I smelled him, but I wondered if a bit of scent was still on me, even though I’d showered a couple times.

Raven dropped it.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

I knew she wasn’t, but I let that go. “Are you going to see Magnus again?” He hadn’t returned to the apartment. They seemed to say farewell, and that was it.

“No.” She continued to eat.

“He helped you so many times…and that’s just it?”

“What else should happen?”

“It just seemed like there was something there…between you.”

She dipped her pancake into her pool of syrup and brought it to her mouth.

“Did you sleep with him?”

She sighed at the question but answered anyway. “Yeah, a couple times.”

“And you seem sad that he’s gone…”

She lowered her fork to the plate. “I’m forever grateful that he saved us both. He’s a good man in a bad situation. But what kind of future could I have with someone like that? How could I ever want to be with someone who participates in something that’s so morally wrong…?” She shook her head and bowed toward her food. “Never going to happen.”

I dropped my gaze and looked at my own plate, feeling a flood of guilt for the complicated feelings I had for the boss—the man responsible for it all. As much as it hurt to leave him, I knew I made the right decision. I would miss him for a long time. Maybe I would always miss him. But Raven already hated so much about me, if I ever confided those feelings to her, she would hate me even more.

“Are you going to go back home?”

My eyes lifted to hers, the question striking a chord within me. This apartment didn’t feel like home, and my old apartment in America definitely didn’t feel like home. Home was in a palace outside Paris, with a man who marched around the house in nothing but sweatpants. “I’m not leaving you.” I shook my head. “I’m not leaving Paris. This is my home now.” I understood Raven had come here just to get away from me, but now I would never let her go, not after I’d lost her so many times.

Raven stared at me, her eyes studying my face.

The emotion bubbled up inside me, all the regret and remorse. I’d spent my time reflecting on the person I was, and once I realized how terrible I had been, I never wanted to be the same again. I wanted to be better. I wanted to be like my sister. Before I could beg for forgiveness, she provided it.

“I forgive you.”

I inhaled a deep breath, the weight floating away like birds off a branch, a closure to this horrible chapter in our lives. “I know I’ve been so terrible to you since Mom died. I’m so sorry, Raven.” Tears started to drip like a leaky faucet. “But I’m a different person now. I’ll get a job, get my own apartment, be independent—”

“Melanie, it’s okay.”

“It’s not okay. All I’ve been doing since we were captured is thinking about how I treated you. You know the reason I came here in the first place?” The knob of the faucet turned, and more tears fell. “Because I knew you moved here to get away from me, and I resented you for it. I was so angry that you moved all the way across the world to get away from me…because I’m so horrible. But I am a horrible person—was a horrible person—and that’s not me anymore. I’ll be more like you.”

It passed with the quiet click of a clock, counting the minutes forward, but also counting backward, counting down to a date that had never been set. Because that date was a moment, not a weekday, not a weekend, not a year.

A moment.

The home was dilapidated, practically unlivable, deep in the evergreen forests of Romania. There wasn’t even a road that led to the property, just a dirt path covered with leaves tinted with red and orange. Fall was bitter with cold, giving a whistle on the wind like the winter train was about to pull into the station.

The weathered wood cracked against the elements, a stair was missing in the steps, and the windows had cracks where shards had popped out of the frame. A single footstep with a heavy boot made a creak that reverberated through the house.

But a caged animal had nowhere to run, not out here.

Every step made a squeak, every movement cast a shadow across the broken walls, every moment made their hearts beat slower and slower. A narrow hallway led to a single bedroom, a cot sitting on a slab of wood, a lantern on the nightstand, a set of eyeglasses. Pictures of naked French girls were hung on the walls, decades-old and taken from outdated magazines that were probably found in the bottom of a dumpster.

The small window showed the exterior, the early morning light that broke through the trees and highlighted the gentle powder of snow that caked the branches and leaves. Like sprinkled sugar, it was on the ground, the gentle beginning of a rough winter.

He lay on his back in the small bed, a single pillow behind his head, one hand across his stomach, gentle breaths filling his lungs and expanding his body in peaceful ways. Far away in dreams, he was unaware of the two men who moved to either side of the bed, who surrounded him like the night, dark like shadows.

They both stared down at the pathetic man before them, sleeping soundly in a place he arrogantly assumed they would never find. His dark beard was now filled with strands of gray, and it grew like a brush along his chin, hung like stems of ivy down his chest. The stench wafted to their noses, causing a slight burn like the dung on a pig farm.

The shadow on the left withdrew his gun and pressed the cool barrel to the man’s forehead.

Not a stir.

He cocked the gun, a little click filling the small bedroom of the shack.

Like a light switch flicked on, eyes opened, staring at the gun pressed to his forehead, the view of the shadows above him blurred. The quiet breathing quickened, panic moved into his gaze, but it faded as quickly as it came, turning into an acceptance so peaceful it almost looked like desire.

The shadow spoke, a voice deeper than hell, a voice that reverberated with power, with retribution, with the promise of vengeance. “Did you really think it would be that easy, Father?”

His knees sank into the dry mud, his hands behind his back, viewing the forest in front of him, the birds chirping a beautiful song, like it was just another day in the world, not the day of execution for a traitor.

In a black bomber jacket that fit his broad shoulders like they were a coat hanger for a suit, he stood behind his father, watching him stare at the beautiful peace before him, the world he would leave in a very unpeaceful way.

His brother shifted his gaze to look at him, to silently conduct a deep conversation between them, with details and logistics, all passing in just a single lock of their mutual gaze. With brown eyes earthy like the trees and dirt, he watched his older brother, eyeing the knife in his hand.

Their father remained where they’d left him, breathing deeper and harder, yanking on the ropes around his wrists so he could clutch his chest and dispel the anxiety that brought him into a state of panic. There was no greater torture than the fear of the torture, of the painful moments as you waited for death’s knock on your front door. All you could do was close your eyes and strain your ears to hear that sound, that sound that would end the suffering because the wait had finally ended.

He gripped the knife in his gloved hand, a knife that had never been used, sharp enough to cut through the densest bone. “There is no death that will suffice. His spilled blood will never erase the red stains on their pillowcases. The rot of his bones will never catch up to their already rotten graves.”

His brother stared on and, after several seconds, gave a subtle nod.

“But his execution will be their revenge.” He stepped forward.

The cabins had turned to ash.

The coke on the tables had burned too.

A camp that had stood for a decade was now a graveyard. Some of the guards lived. Some had died. Most of the women got away, except a few we retrieved. The guards rode down the path lit by torches and rounded up the ones who’d fled. If they resisted, they were shot.

I sat on a wooden bench that had survived and looked at what was left of the camp.

And that wasn’t much.

The night had passed, and now it was morning. The sun shone down, highlighting the damage.

The damage she caused.

My hands still shook in anger. My veins popped out of my arms. My entire face hurt because the muscles were so fucking tight. There were seldom times in my life when I got this angry.

This might be the worst.

I wanted to kill her.

I stared at where she lay in the snow…and almost did it.

I was too angry to kill her. Was that possible?

The guards had ostracized me because they recognized her running through the camp with her sister. They didn’t know I’d helped her escape, but they knew I’d helped her in the past, so they spat on me as they passed.

Horses were audible as they approached, galloping through the patches of snow and the hard earth. There were several, an entire entourage.

I kept my hands on the ground, not in cowardice but indifference.

The horses neighed as they came to a stop.

His boots thudded against the ground as he got off his horse. Then the footsteps came toward me, thudding louder and louder as they came near. Then they stopped.

I looked up to see my brother standing over me.

He wore the exact same expression as I did when I looked at Raven.

Like he wanted to kill me.

One of the guards found a chair from somewhere and placed it behind him so he could take a seat if he wanted.

He didn’t.

I didn’t rise to my feet or speak a word. I had no defense for the events that had transpired last night. If he decided to kill me, I would accept that decision. After all, this was entirely my fault.

I should die.

After minutes of angry silence, he lowered himself into the chair. “Leave us.”

The guards all stepped away to give us privacy. There was nowhere for them to go since not a single building had survived. They just walked farther into the clearing full of snow and ash.

He stared at me, wearing his bomber jacket, jeans, and thick boots. His hair had been shaved, so he was bald with a shadow on his head that matched the one on his jawline. With wide nostrils and lips that quivered with rage, he looked at me with more than anger.

Shame.

When he spoke, his voice was surprisingly quiet. “Everything I built is ash—because of you.”

I held his gaze.

“Because you helped her.”

I gave a slight nod but didn’t apologize.

“You didn’t just humiliate yourself. You humiliated me.”

I had done everything for that woman—and she’d stabbed me in the back. The one time I dropped my guard, the one time I had empathy, the one time I felt human…blew up in my fucking face. Both of my hands tightened into fists because I was so fucking mad. I started to breathe harder, the headache returning because the vein in my forehead stuck out so far.

He studied my reaction. “The humiliation isn’t enough. The anger isn’t enough. I must punish you.”

I’d betrayed my brother, the only family I had left in the world, for a woman who’d gutted me like a fish. My softness had callused into stone. My kindness had turned into blood lust. If I ever saw her again, I wouldn’t be able to resist putting a knife to her throat and watching her choke on her own blood.

“You will pay me for everything I’ve lost.”

I relaxed my fists because my knuckles had started to ache.

“You will rebuild this place with your bare hands—and your own money.”

I had already assumed.

“You will work day and night to get this done as quickly as possible so we can resume normal productivity.”

“Where will productivity—”

“This place will be better than it was before.”

I stared at my brother’s face, seeing the disgust in his eyes.

“I will bring that cunt back here to work. She will pay for what she’s done with her body, her blood, and her spirit.”

She deserved worse for what she’d done to me. “Kill her.”

He shook his head slowly. “She doesn’t fear death. She fears this place. That’s why she burned it to the ground—because it’s in her nightmares. Her punishment will be to live this nightmare forevermore.”

Just the thought of seeing her again made my stomach flood with acid. All she’d had to do was live. But she chose to throw it all away. She chose to betray the one person who kept her alive all that time.
I've been taking care of my little sister for a long time. When Mom was gone, she suddenly became my responsibility. The best years of my life were spent being a caretaker to someone else...with no one to take care of me.
So I moved to Paris for my study-abroad program and ended up staying, getting a French Literature degree, studying the classics while sipping the best wine I'd ever had.
My sister never makes the best decisions, always makes messes to clean up, and it's finally time for me to have my own life. But when she comes to Paris for a visit...she brings trouble with her.
She gets herself into a bad situation, and of course, I come to her rescue...like I always do.
Now we're in a labor camp in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by endless snow and mountains, processing drugs for a group of men that never show their faces. There's no chance of escape in this wilderness.
Except for my guard.
He's not a saint, but he's the only man that's kind to me. He knows I want to escape, but he never reports me. When I've had a hard day, he brings me extra things to make my life easier. He tells me not to run because I'll never make it...but he brings me little hidden tools...as if he's giving me the means.
Like he wants me to be free.

Prologue

Pouring rain made the roads slick with darkness, reflecting the sliver of moon that emerged for just a glimpse between the passing clouds. The asphalt of the street and the wet concrete of the sidewalk were indiscernible from each other because everything looked black and white in a storm like this. An iron lamppost stood at the corner, the only beacon to the Parisian neighborhood.

Face hidden under the raised hood of his jacket, a young man took the steps to the front door of his home. His jacket was sprayed with rainwater, the drops bouncing off the material like smooth pebbles, and he unlocked the door before stepping into the dark apartment.

There were no lights.

No signs of life.

The clock on the wall showed the time.

Two a.m.

He stripped off his soaked jacket and hung it on the coatrack, family portraits on the wall, a mother, a father, and four children, all dressed in sweater vests and dresses, highlighting the numerous family vacations that had been taken throughout the years, no thought to expense.

A muffled gunshot erupted in the house.

He stilled at the sound, the water from his shoes soaking into the rug on which he stood. Eyes darted back and forth as he looked into the darkness, trying to distinguish the threat he couldn’t see. Every member of his family was fast asleep at this hour.

Turning around and darting back out of the house was the smartest decision for a young man, but he remained rooted to the spot, as if he weren’t sure if he heard the murderous sound at all.

He grabbed a knife and took the stairs.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

At the top of the stairs, he heard it again.

A silenced gunshot.

With a heartbeat thudding loud in his ears, a terror nearly paralyzing his heart, he crept down the hallway, knowing he had no chance against a gunman when he was only armed with a knife.

But his family was on the line.

The master bedroom door was ajar, the bed visible from his place in the hallway. The lump of a body was noticeable in the sheets.

He crept into the room and grabbed his mother by the shoulder. “Mother.” He gave her a gentle shake, looking back at the door to watch for the assailant that was creeping in his home. “Mother.” He shook her again, his restrained voice under a cloak of a whisper.

When he shook her again, he noticed the dots of blood on her pillow.

Two—the size of bullets.

That was when he noticed her open eyes, the ghost of life in her gaze, the sudden feeling of death.

He jumped back, stepping away from the bed as if he might be sick. Tears welled in his eyes, but the current threat in his home restricted the sobs to the backs of his eyes and not his throat.

When he crept back into the hallway, he gripped his knife a little tighter, with more resolution than before. The next bedroom belonged to his younger sister, and when he spotted her motionless in the bed, he knew she’d met the same fate.

He didn’t even bother to walk inside.

Footsteps sounded farther down the hallway, a man’s footsteps audible to his sensitive ears.

He held his breath as he listened.

The door creaked slightly as the man entered the bedroom of his older brother.

He couldn’t keep his breath even, couldn’t keep his heart steady. He gripped the handle of the knife so hard his hand ached.

Then another gunshot sounded.

And he knew his brother’s fate.

The bedroom door to his younger brother’s room was ajar. There was no time to waste, no time to linger. Based on the man’s movements down the hallway, this was the last bedroom on his list. His younger brother could still be alive.

He moved into the bedroom and found his younger brother lying on his back.

But he was breathing.

He set the knife on the nightstand and gripped him by both arms before he gave the boy a harsh shake. “Wake up.” He placed his hand over his mouth so he wouldn’t scream in protest.

But he didn’t wake.

His eyes moved to the cup of water on the nightstand, the murky color of the liquid, as if something had been dissolved for every member of the family to drink. His own bedroom was last, so perhaps that murderer assumed he was in bed like everyone else.

His arms scooped under his brother’s limp body and curled him to his chest. He groaned as he used all his strength to lift his brother’s weight as he rose to his feet. There was nothing he could do for anyone else, so he carried his brother into the hallway, casting a glance in the direction of his assailant. The coast was clear, and he made for the stairs.

“What…?” His brother stirred from sleep, moving slightly, his voice muffled from the haze of the sleeping pills.
