Luke Roberts came to the small lazy town of Kilgore, Texas with one thing on his mind: Forgetting. He wanted to forget why he left. Forget those emerald green eyes that haunted his dreams.
And forget how it felt to have his heart ripped out of his chest by a woman who didn’t like the fact that he had a child. It was something he’d been doing a damn fine job of doing, too.
Until Reese smashed through every one of his defenses, and made him feel again.
Reese Doherty was just trying to do the best for her little girl. So she moved to the little boomtown nearly an hour from where she grew up to be the school nurse for Kilgore’s littlest people. That’s where she met him. The SWAT officer and the man that would change her life forever. The sexy man who liked to drive fast, and live life like it should be lived. He drove her crazy, and became something she could barely live without.
But Luke was a hero. A man used to risking his life to make the world a safer place. Something Reese had to decide whether she could handle or not. Preferably before her and her daughter became too attached.
Just when she’s ready to give him her whole heart, her world takes a huge hit, and everything she thought she knew wasn’t as it seemed.
Luke wasn’t a quitter, though. Damn far from it, and he’d prove to her that he’d be there when the dust settled. Whether she wanted him to be or not.

-Reese’s secret thoughts

Reese

“Ms. Doherty, you have Katerina Roberts on her way to see you from the playground. The teacher says she’s having a hard time breathing,” Mrs. Shoe, from the front office, called through my intercom.

I looked towards the speaker, even though she couldn’t see me, and nodded my head as I said, “Thank you, Mrs. Shoe. I’ll meet her.”

I was the school nurse for Kilgore Elementary School.

In the three weeks I’d been here, I found that there were three main things that children came to the nurse for. One was a scrape or cut of some sort. Two was a stomach bug, and three was kids having trouble breathing.

The trouble breathing thing was the scariest.

I’d found that quite a few children at the school had asthma, which was a shocker for me.

So I knew quite a few of the regular children due to them coming before recess, or after, to get a puff on their inhaler.

Katerina Roberts was a new one for me.

“Mrs. Dane, would you mind pulling up Katerina Robert’s record for me to see if she has any allergies or medications she can get if needed?” I asked Laura.

Laura Dane was a CNA, or a certified nursing assistant. She’d been a lifeline since I’d started here two months ago. Mrs. Redden, the school nurse I was replacing, was currently at lunch, although she was expected back any minute for me to take my own.

Later, when I took over fully, I’d be taking my school lunch during my spare time, because the school couldn’t be without a nurse. But for now, until I finished interning with Mrs. Redden, I’d be able to leave if she was here.

Standing, I walked out of my office, through the room that held the exam tables, and into the hallway.

I was always surprised at the bright red walls with the black tiled floor.

Kilgore took their school colors very seriously.

Along the walls on the two furthest tiles, were painted red feet that showed the students where they were to walk as they went through the hallways.

It was always fun to see them walking single file, especially the ones that were rebels and made their own path.

I wasn’t one to follow the path myself, and I always sympathized with those students.

My daughter, Rowen, was the same way.

I used to drive my parents crazy during my school age years, which was always fun to remember now. Back then, it hadn’t been so funny.

I waved to Mrs. Shoe, who was making her way slowly down the hallway. She nodded before disappearing into the school’s office.

Just before I turned the corner that would lead down the hallway that held the entrance to the playground, I heard the labored breathing of a small child.

I sped up, running, especially concerned now.

Surely they wouldn’t have just let her walk alone, right? A child with respiratory distress?

But as I rounded the corner, I saw the girl on her knees, alone, with her hands planted on the tile in front of her.

Typical tripod position for a person in breathing distress.

“Honey,” I said rushing forward. “Sweetheart, look at me. Katerina?”

The little girl looked up.

Her beautiful blue eyes the color of the sky, were scared.

Her lips were slightly blue, and I knew she was in shock.

“Kat, can I call you Kat?” At her nod, I bent down and picked her up.

She was a small little thing, much smaller than most of the children in this school. My guess was that she was a first grader, but most likely on the younger side of the grade rather than the older side.

“Can you tell me what’s going on? Did something happen on the playground?” I asked as I started running towards the office.

“B-b-b-ee.” She gasped for air.

My heart froze.

Anaphylactic shock.

“Honey, are you allergic to bees?” I asked.

I felt her nod against my cheek where her head rested. “Y-y-esss.”

The ‘S’ came out in a wheeze as I rounded the entrance to the nurse’s office.

Then the coughing started, as I laid her down on the exam table.

Laura rushed forward, holding out the small cubby that held each individual child’s medications and said, “She’s allergic to bees, peanuts, and shellfish.”

I’d already decided that what she had was related to the bee sting, but having it confirmed made me comfortable in using the EpiPen Junior I saw in her plastic cubby.

Reaching into the container, I removed the EpiPen and read the prescription label confirming it was for the same child. Checked the dose, comparing it to Katerina’s chart. The expiration date. Removing it from its container, I took the safety cap off, and then promptly injected it into her thigh.

The click was deafening as the needle penetrated the skin.

I counted slowly to ten and watched as, instantly, Katerina started to breathe.

Her lips, which I hadn’t noticed had gone completely blue, started to return to their normal color, and Katerina’s eyes opened.

Tears started to run down her cheeks, and she launched herself into my arms.

I caught her effortlessly, and curled her into my chest as I held the girl’s shaking, sobbing body.

“It’s okay, baby. It’s okay,” I whispered softly.

“Medics are less than three minutes out, but I’m sure her father will beat them here,” Mrs. Redden said, startling me.

I hadn’t realized she was here.

“Why would her father beat the medics?” I asked.

I knew that the parents would be called, but not before the medics, which were a little over a mile down the road.

“Her father’s on the police force for Kilgore. Luke Roberts,” Laura said wistfully.

Should I know him or something?

“I want my daddy,” Katerina whimpered softly against my neck.

“I know, sweetie. He’s on his way,” I said softly. Then, turning to Laura, I said, “Go wait for the medics so they’re not freakin’ out trying to get in here.”

The school was new, and with the brand new building came new security features.

For instance, the front office was the first thing that the public had to pass through to get into the school.
Nico met the love of his life when he was seventeen.
Immediately, he realizes that the gap in their ages is too significant to make a move on her until she’s legal in the eyes of the law. But a tragedy strikes while Georgia is alone and vulnerable, and with no other recourse, Georgia leaves, disappearing without a trace.
After months of searching, he finds her, but quickly realizes that she needs the time to herself to work out her problems on her own. So he leaves her be, knowing that if she ever felt anything for him, she’d come back home to him.
But it takes her years to return, and in those years, Nico changes, too. He’s seen too much. Done too much. Lost too much.
He lives his life as a SWAT officer for KPD, goes through the motions of everyday life, but only as half a man. And not even the good half. The US military saw to that.
When the two finally come back together, one question remains. Will she love him as the man he is now, or leave him because he’s not the same man he used to be?

Georgia

Thirteen years old

“Hey,” a girl’s voice called from in front of me, causing me to look up.

The Hispanic girl smiled at me, walking forward.

She’d been at tryouts today with me. I thought her name was Nikki, but I wasn’t a hundred percent sure.

My brain was still a little foggy from having to run two miles in a time limit I’d never had to meet before.

“Nikki, right?” I asked for confirmation.

I’d meant it to come out a little cooler sounding, but nothing really sounded cool when you had to fight to breathe. I’d at least made it, though.

The poor girls that didn’t make it had to run an extra mile. I’d have collapsed.

She nodded, walking up to me with her soccer cleats in her hand. “Yep. You’re George, right?”

I snorted. “Actually, it’s Georgia. Although, I’ve gotten George before, too.”

She walked at my side through the gym door, laughing when we got an eye full of butt crack when we entered.

There was, apparently, a problem with the ice machine, according to the man’s shirt that said, ‘We’ll always keep you cool, even when you’re hot.’ Under that denoted him as working for Freeze Me.

Classy, I thought.

“So, I know this may sound really weird, but do you wanna go watch a soccer game with me?” Nikki asked as we turned into the girl’s locker room and stopped at our prospective bags.

We didn’t have actual assigned lockers, which was why the room itself looked like thirty five girls exploded all over it.

“When?” I asked hesitantly.

I had to walk home. If I had to walk home after a soccer game, it’d be even later. Then my dad would probably be really, really mad.

She looked at her watch. “Oh, about fifteen minutes or so. It’s on the soccer field we just got off of.”

I thought about it for a moment.

My parents weren’t expecting me until later and, up until now, I’d never had free time to do anything.

Cattle liked to be fed on time.

But I’d gotten the day to myself because my father had hired an extra hand to help out when I started soccer. I’d begged and begged to start on a club team, and he’d finally relented.

Although it was only because my mom had begged him until he’d relented.

Mom had convinced him that it’d help with my college tuition.

I, on the other hand, was just doing it for fun. If a scholarship came out of it, cool. If not, no big deal. I was going to bust my ass and get out of this town no matter what it took.

“Sure,” I said softly. “I think I’d like that.”

She smiled. “So, where do you live? I can see if my brother will give you a ride home.”

We both grabbed our bags and were walking out to the parking lot before I replied.

“Off of 31, on County Road 3311,” I answered hesitantly.

We’d just moved in there and I wasn’t a hundred percent certain on the actual address yet.

I caught her gasp and turned to see her staring at me like I’d grown a second head. “You live at the old Pool place, don’t you?”

I nodded cautiously. “Yeah, we moved in last month.”

“That’s where I live! Well…not there, exactly, but down the road from you!” She grinned.

I turned to her. “You’re kidding me.”

I’d never gone further than our mailbox in all the time we’d been there. I literally never got any time to myself. All of it was spent doing chores of some sort. Although, I had noticed all the tractors moving around the land to the side of us, just yesterday, when I was riding the fence line.

She shook her head. “Nope.”

“That’s awesome,” I muttered as I walked to the back of the cars.

My eyes lingered on a really pretty truck. It was an old Ford with a lift on it. If I could have a truck right now, that’d be the one I’d choose.

Nikki sniffed.

“Yeah, this is my brother’s truck,” she said as she saw my eyes lingering on the beauty. She grabbed my hand and led me down the hill that would lead to the field, and I was surprised to see the stands on the opposite sides already filling up.

“Wow, they were cutting it kind of close with our tryouts, weren’t they?” I asked.

Nikki snorted. “Yep.”

“Who’s playing?” I asked as we walked through the gates.

Nikki scanned the rapidly filling stands for a seat and spoke. “Kilgore and Hallsville. My brother plays for Kilgore.”

The whistles started to blow and both teams spread out to their team’s side of the field.

“Hurry,” she said, dragging me forward.

I hurried or I would’ve fallen on my face. Nikki was strong.

I was on the first row of bleachers and walking directly behind Nikki when I saw him.

Tall, dark, and handsome.

Long, strong legs. Big, broad hands. Narrow hips. Hard jaw.

His hair was clipped tightly to his scalp, and the jersey he was wearing fit him perfectly, unlike the other members of the team.

I watched as, with one swift move, he reared back with the ball over his head, and threw it to the referee that was in the middle of the field.

My jaw dropped with the sheer amount of force he was able to put in to the throw.

He’d flung it clear across the field.

I’d only be able to do a quarter of that. On a good day. With the wind blowing.

He further impressed me when he scored only seconds after the referee blew the whistle, signaling for the game to start.

His way of celebrating after scoring made me crack up. He was running in circles with his hands above his head, and I wanted to laugh out loud, but managed to control it. Barely.

He was walking back when it happened.

My world shifted on its axis.

Nikki yelled, “Yeah, Nico!”

This Nico, the one I’d been practically drooling over since I’d made it here, looked at the girl beside me and smiled.

Then his eyes turned to me, and he stopped, blinking rapidly, before one of his teammates jumped on his back and got him moving again.
Lachlan Downy was a lover, not a fighter.
Okay, he wouldn't lie, he was a fighter, too. But nobody had to know that. Especially not Memphis Tennessee Conner and her stuffy attitude when it came to cops and ‘men like him.’
Memphis knew cops. Her daddy was a cop. He was also the president of a motorcycle club. Needless to say, he’s about as alpha as they come, and she’s tired of overbearing men who think they know how to run her life better than she does.
So when Downy comes into her life running his smooth talking mouth, she realizes that she’ll have to stand strong against his pretty words and promises to give her what she needs. Downy is determined, though.
He’s the hostage negotiator for KPD SWAT, and he’s never met a person, man or woman, he couldn't talk around into his way of thinking. Although, Memphis is about to show him just how much he miscalculated.
Seems Downy may not be as smooth as he thought, and Memphis is just the girl to show him the error of his ways.

“What’s that in your beard?” James asked me.

I shrugged and kept eating my sandwich. “What’s it look like?”

“Jizz,” James answered instantly.

I snorted and flipped him off.

“Then my best guess would be mayonnaise, since I’m eating a sandwich and all,” I said dryly.

He laughed and went back to his nap, kicking back as far as his chair would allow, which incidentally wasn’t that much.

We were waiting on Luke, our boss and the team leader of Kilgore SWAT, to get here so we could move out.

Everyone was ready to go but him.

Bennett was on the couch in Luke’s office with Foster on one side and Miller on the other. Jason was on his computer in the corner of the room. I was sitting on one of the visitor’s chairs and Michael was sitting beside me.

Then there was Nico, always the loner, standing in the corner of the room gazing out the window.

These men were my family.

I had my own family, of course, but I wasn’t close to them. They were my half brother and sister from my mom’s other family. I liked my sister well enough. My brother was a little weird, but what sixteen year old wasn’t weird?

Well, this one was weirder than most, but he was a good kid, which made him all right in my book.

My mom and my stepfather, however, weren’t my favorite people.

“Jesus, where the hell is Luke?” Michael asked.

Michael was impatient lately.

He was normally a saint, hence how he got the nickname ‘Saint.’ Today, though, he was acting off his rocker, and I had an idea that it had a lot to do with the woman I’d seen him out with three nights ago.

I’d been out on a date…well ‘date’ was too strong of a word. More like I’d been out for drinks with a girl, and I’d seen Michael and a woman together. A woman that looked suspiciously like Nico’s little sister. However, I wasn’t one to pry into other people’s lives, so I kept quiet about it.

Not that I wasn’t extremely interested in knowing what was going on; I just knew how much privacy meant to people.

“I’m here. Let’s ride.” Luke burst into the office long enough to be seen, then left just as quickly.

“So, what’s going on?” I asked, licking my fingers clean.

“Holdup. It took so long because I was trying to talk the chief into allowing us to go. It’s out of our district, but not by much. Pierson, Tide and Associates,” Luke said as we made it to the armored truck and started piling in.

I opened the door for Mocha, my dog, and shook my head as she refused to get in.

We had a love hate relationship right now.

She loved to make me look stupid, and I hated to be made to look stupid.

We were still learning how to interact as a team, her and me.

Mocha had been very attached to her previous owner, Trance, an officer that’d trained her out of Benton, Louisiana. A forty minute ride from where we were located.

When Trance had left her with us, me in particular, he’d had high hopes that we’d get along fine. And we did, for the most part. As long as I did what she wanted, when she wanted it, that was.

I’d tried letting someone else on the team try, even Foster and Miller, who happened to be Trance’s brothers. She actually hated them and wanted nothing to do with them.

And right now, she didn’t want to get into the truck.

So I got in and closed the door. The doors behind us closed as well.

Nico looked at me like I’d lost my mind, but I hadn’t. Not yet anyway.

“Just start to drive, she’ll get in when she realizes we’re serious about leaving,” I said, answering his unspoken question.

He shook his head, but started to pull out of the garage slowly, unsure if it was going to work.

We didn’t even make it out of the garage before she started to bark.

Nico came to a stop and I opened my door.

The instant the gap was big enough for Mocha to fit through, she was sitting in my lap, eyes staring out the window.

“I thought you said she was getting better,” Nico muttered as he pulled out of the driveway and into the street, lights and sirens running.

I pulled the cord that activated the horn and grimaced. “She’s doing better. We would’ve had to get to the road before she would’ve done anything a few weeks ago.”

“Whatever. As long as she’s willing to work when she needs to, I don’t care. It’s just weird, though, that she’s been with you for nearly a year and she’s not any better. Just show her who’s boss. That’s what I have to do with Hamburger. Let him know who the alpha is, and he calms right down,” Nico said.

Hamburger was Nico’s wife’s dog. A fuckin’ massive Saint Bernard that was, honest to God, two hundred pounds. He would also slobber on an intruder, while giving him kisses, rather than protect any of them. Mocha would protect me, but only grudgingly. Mostly because she considered my home her territory now, and wouldn’t abide any intruders entering her inner sanctum.

My bed, for instance, was only allowed to be occupied by her, me and my cat, Rayburn.

The last time I’d tried to bring a woman home had been just that. The last.

She’d gone fuckin’ nuts and scared the poor girl to death. Sally…or Sandy…whatever her name was, had to be scratched out of my book. She’d refused to ever come back, and I’d been inclined to let her.

I mean, if a little barking scared her, what would my job do to her?

Mocha’s attitude didn’t just extend to the one woman, either. It extended to many women. She’d been the only one that couldn’t handle it.

The others just put up with the noise. It wasn’t like their mind was on that anyway. That, or I wasn’t doing my job correctly.

“Shit, the news vans are already here. So are the Times and the News-Journal,” Nico muttered.

Miller

“Shoot him, goddammit! Motherfuckin’ shoot him!” I yelled desperately into my mic.

We all watched in horror as the man, who was holding the young woman up against the church’s glass doors, started to rape her.

The woman’s face was pressed up against the glass as she sobbed.

The man’s body was completely covered, except for one tiny portion of his head, and I knew, rationally, that the opening wasn’t large enough.

James had a single tiny window from his position at the top of the building across the street, and the glare from the sun off the front glass was enough to cause even the most experienced snipers trouble.

But, if anybody could do it, it was James.

The man was a savant with a rifle.

I just hoped he’d be able to make that shot, because there was no other entrance or exit into the building except for three tiny windows at the back that was lined with metal bars.

They could come off, but not without a lot of noise.

“I need a distraction. Get him to move two more inches and he’ll be done,” James’ cool voice said from the mic in my ear.

I moved, not even thinking.

I was moving forward and running towards the side of the building as fast as my legs would carry me.

“What do you want me to do?” I asked.

James paused, but it was Downy who answered.

“Movement. Pop your head back around the side and let him see the movement. Maybe he’ll move to get a better look and allow James some more breathing room,” Downy murmured quietly.

I nodded and started to move, letting the top left half of my body pop into view and back out. “Hey!”

I saw his head snap around just as I disappeared back from sight.

Then a loud pop filled the air, followed by some glass shattering.

I moved, darting around the building to find the young woman on her knees, her pants down around her ankles as she sobbed uncontrollably.

I moved, stepping onto glass and debris until I was down on my knees beside her.

I moved forward, moving my arms around her to gather her stretchy pants at the waistband, pulling them up until they were covering her once again.

She whimpered and I said, “It’s okay, honey. I know. He’s dead.”

He was very much dead, too.

Half his head was now gone, and his life blood now filled the floor surrounding his body.

“G-g-gone?” She cried desperately, starting to turn back and look.

“No, honey. Don’t look. He’s not looking too pretty,” I said honestly.

She shoved me away anyway and turned to look at the body on the floor before she reached back and let loose a vicious kick with her pointy toed boots into the dead man’s side.

“You stupid.” Kick. “Fucking.” Kick. “Piece of filthy, cock sucking shit.” Kick.

I pulled her away from the body as men started to fill the room around us.

“Come back here,” I said, moving her out of the way.

She came willingly, my arms wrapped tightly around her waist.

I didn’t bother to ask if she was okay.

There was no way she could be.

Not when she’d just been raped on national television.

Try as we might, there was no way that it wasn’t caught on the multiple reporter’s cameras that witnessed the heinous act.

“Mercy Shepherd!” A distraught woman’s voice wailed from the front of the church.

The woman, Mercy the distraught woman had called her, turned to find an older woman with graying brown hair running up the steps to the church, but she was stopped by police before she could get much further than the third step.

She turned into me, shielding her face with my chest.

“I don’t want to see her right now,” she whispered frantically.

I pulled her with me into what looked to be an office, and shut the door until all that was left open was barely a crack.

She didn’t move away from me. Her lean body actually somewhat collapsed into mine. I caught her in time to prevent her from slamming into the cheap laminate floor at my feet.

“I knew him,” she whispered into my chest.

Her hands were clutching my shirt with a grip that could rival the Hulk’s, but I didn’t complain.

If anything, I was happy to offer my assistance.

The last hour had been a freakin’ nightmare, which was why I allowed her to cry in my arms. If it was a nightmare for me, it was a living hell for her.

We’d arrived on scene, after receiving a call from a distraught church goer, that a man had started beating his girlfriend for smiling at another man.

Once we were dispatched, we got call after call of witnesses saying that the woman was hurt really bad, and that the man now had a gun pointed at the woman’s head.

We arrived on scene less than ten minutes after the call was taken, just in time to see him reveal the woman’s lower half to an entire block of downtown Kilgore.

He’d then proceeded to finger her roughly, pinching her breasts, and pulling her hair, all the while he kept a gun trained at the back of her head.

They’d disappeared for a few moments as what churchgoers had described as a ‘come to Jesus.’

The men and women at the church couldn’t give any indication who the couple were, but it didn’t take John, one of the other members of the SWAT team who did all the computer work, to find out who he was.

Mitch Moose, a thirty year old accountant, brought the young woman back to the front window thirty minutes later where he proceeded to rape the woman in front of God and the entire population of Kilgore, Texas.

All the while we watched on, helpless, because every vital piece of his body was covered by hers.

Which led us to now: me holding a crying, distraught woman in my arms who’d just been raped.

I didn’t know what to say.

What did you say in times like these?

He can’t let go of the past. The anger burns deep, making his emotions volatile at the best of times. Then he meets Blake with her haughty attitude and inability to distinguish the difference between a pocket knife and a sword.
I’m a fuckin’ delight to be around.

-Secret thoughts of Foster

Foster

“I need to speak to the officer that gave my grandfather a ticket. Right now,” I heard snapped over the phone.

I shook my head and stood up out of my chair.

“I’ll be there in a minute, Pat,” I said tightly, reining in my anger as best I could.

Pattie Hightower was the front office receptionist who sat behind the wall of glass. The first person the general public saw once they entered the building.

She had a shit job, and didn’t make enough. Everyone in the precinct was guilty of abusing her niceness, myself included.

Limping around the desk, I winced as my leg started the familiar aching burn that usually came around when I’d done too much work with it.

Which I had.

I did every day, but today I’d re-qualified with the SWAT team.

I’d run the obstacle course that every new potential member of SWAT had to run to be accepted into the fold.

I’d previously been on the SWAT team, but an incident last Valentine’s Day with the crazy bitch that tried to take my brother, Miller’s, and my sister-in-law, Mercy’s, life had sidelined me temporarily.

Linda Moose, a.k.a. Crazy Bitch, CB for short, had tried to plow her car straight through Mercy’s face.

At the time, Mercy had been pregnant with my nephew. I’d seen her small body fold into my brother’s, and before I knew it, I’d started running.

Right into the path of the stupid bitch’s bumper.

CB had reversed, so I had, too.

I’d stopped when my back had met the brick mailbox. Unfortunately, Linda had not.

She backed straight into me, pinning my left leg in between the bumper and the brick mailbox from hell.

Then she’d tried to leave.

Bad for her, my gun had been in my hand before I’d even consciously thought about it.

I’d shot her through the back glass.

The first two bullets had passed through her left shoulder, and the next one had grazed the top of her head.

She’d crashed after my last shots took out her tires.

It was inconclusive whether she passed out from hitting the tree, or the bullet to the head.

Regardless, I’d managed to stop her before my leg finally realized there wasn’t much left to stand on.

I’d fallen to the ground and promptly passed out.

Then had woken up in a hospital bed ten hours later, legless, and in a perpetual bad mood.

“You got a live one, Crush,” Chief Rhodes said, eyes alight with laughter.

I didn’t bother to respond.

I’d somehow become the laughing stock of the station.

They thought it was funny to call me Crush.

I, on the other hand, thought it fucking sucked.

I didn’t need to be reminded on a daily basis that I was missing my leg. Well, half a leg.

I had a below the knee amputation.

Which was better than, say, an above the knee amputation. Regardless, it was still an amputation and it had impacted my life greatly.

I witnessed the fact every morning when I looked down. Every morning when I fitted the prosthesis on my leg. Every morning when I walked into work.

My prosthesis looked like anybody’s leg when I was wearing jeans or long pants. The problem was that everyone on the force, as well as in the community, knew I was missing a leg. Knew the weakness I had.

“No, I just want to talk to him. It won’t take but a minute,” I heard a woman’s voice say once I reached the lobby.

Pushing the door closed behind me, I walked up behind the woman, surveying her.

She was around five eight or nine. Full figure, round hips, perfect ass. Long legs encased in tight jeans.

Curly, white blonde hair that was nearly the shade of mine came down to her mid back.

The ends looked like they’d been dipped in purple paint.

“Can I help you?” I asked the woman.

She whirled around, her eyes narrowing on my face, then taking in my badge, gun, and posture before returning her eyes to mine.

My breath caught as I got a load of her face.

She was fucking beautiful.

Her eyes were the shade of warm, melted honey.

Her lips were luscious, and she had the cutest cleft in her chin that I’d ever seen.

And that was saying something, since my nephew and niece had cleft chins. That was hard to compete with.

I wanted to touch it. Badly.

But then her snotty attitude cleared that want right up.

“You’re Officer Spurlock? Badge number 654?” She asked, crossing her arms across her breasts.

I raised my brows at her.

She obviously had done her homework about me.

Looking down at my badge, I pointed towards it with a finger. “That’s me.”

She moved forward, closing the distance I’d left between us in milliseconds.

“Let me tell you something, Officer Spurlock. What you did was despicable,” she hissed.

I raised my eyebrow at her. “And what did I ‘do,’ exactly?”

“You gave my grandfather, a veteran, and a fine man, a ticket for having a pocketknife on him,” she spat.

I blinked.

What the fuck?

“Are you talking about that crazy old man that was wielding a butcher knife at me? That was anything but a ‘pocketknife.’ It’s closer to a machete than a pocket knife,” I clarified.

Her eyes narrowed. “That was a pocket knife.”

I gritted my teeth and pulled my phone out of my pocket. I’d show her how much of a ‘pocketknife’ it wasn’t.

I flipped through my pictures, past the ones of my brother who thought it’d be funny to post a picture of his ass on my phone, over the stack of beer cans we’d used to make a tower, and finally stopping on the one I was searching for.

“Does this,” I said, holding my phone out to show her the picture. “Look like a pocketknife to you, ma’am?”

Her brows lowered in confusion. “N-no. That’s not what he just told me…excuse me.”

With that, she pushed past me.

Caught off balance, I instinctually put my weight on my bad leg, and promptly ate dirt.

The woman was gone before I even hit the floor.

I was able to catch myself before I did any major damage to my person, but not in enough time to prevent the entire station from seeing me fall.
Bennett had the world in the palm of his hands when he was sixteen, then he allowed his dick to do the thinking for him.
That one night changed his life, giving him a child that would forever alter the course of his life, and an ex that was a crazy nut case on the best of days.
With the help of his parents, he went into the Navy, becoming the SEAL that he always wanted to be. However, with that came a price. A price he wasn’t willing to pay anymore once his little girl started to realize why he wasn’t there. So he came home and joined the local SWAT team, starting his life anew, just his daughter and him.
Then he meets the cute little physician’s assistant that looks down at him like one would an annoying fly, and he finally realizes just what he’s been missing.
Something that takes his mind off of the challenge of everyday life. Someone that dares him to be a better father and police officer. And Lennox is one hell of a motivator.
Their relationship starts off rocky as the two of them circle each other like opponents ready to do combat rather than two civil adults. Every day brings a new battle for the two of them to overcome, and before they realize it, they’ll be fighting for each other instead of against each other.
Because there’s one woman who doesn’t want either one of them to be happy…especially not together.
So watch your face if you say something about one in the other’s hearing.

-Note to self

Bennett

“I can’t fucking believe that that stupid cunt marked my face!” I hissed, staring at my face in the mirror of the exam room.

“Your face was too pretty anyway. You need to get over it,” my sister said distractedly, not even bothering to look up from her magazine.

I turned around and glared at the crazy girl.

“Why are you even here? How’d you know I was here so fast?” I asked with annoyance.

I loved my big sister and all, but she really was a shit head. We fought like cats and dogs, even now, with both of us well over the age of eighteen.

Payton was nearly thirty two, and I’d just turned twenty five. And I still couldn’t count the number of times we got into a hitting match each week.

Something that annoyed our parents and Max, Payton’s husband, to no end.

Then again, we found it amusing that they didn’t like it, which was probably why we did it so often.

“Hey, how about we not do this right now?”

That was Nico, always the voice of reason.

Nico was what I’d call my best friend, even though he was a little standoffish at times.

He was on the SWAT team with me and the reason I’d joined the team myself.

I’d been on the team now for three years and I enjoyed it, most of the time.

Today, however, wasn’t one of those days.

Today was a total cluster fuck that I’d like to forget if at all possible.

However, now I had scratches that started just under my ear and went all the way down my neck and collarbone.

“You’ll probably get rabies, and they’ll have to put you down like the dirty dog that you are,” my sister said helpfully.

I threw the bloody compress I was using, to stem the flow of blood oozing from the cuts at her, nailing her in the middle of her breasts.

“Bennett, you dirty, rotten bastard!” She hissed.

I grinned evilly at her. “What were you saying?”

She flipped me off, took the rag at the cleanest portion between two fingers, and threw it towards the trashcan.

She missed, and it landed on the foot of the nurse who’d just walked in through the door.

“Hmm,” the nurse said, lifting her foot and kicking it off into the trashcan. “Nice try, at least.”

I snorted, but didn’t say anything.

The woman was cute. Long wavy brown hair in a ponytail at the top of her head. The blonde and red streaks in her hair, paired with her makeup, as well as her jewelry, practically screamed ‘high maintenance.’

“Which one of you is Bennett Alvarez?” She asked, scanning the room.

It could be hard to tell, I was sure. There were five people stuffed into the tiny room, and I was the only one standing. I was fairly sure she would have a hard time figuring out who she was supposed to be taking care of, especially since the scratched part of my face was facing away from her.

“That would be me,” I said, drawing her attention, and the full force of her gaze.

It felt like she could see right through me.

It was almost as if she’d stripped me naked in the ten seconds it took her to take me in.

Then she offered her hand to me as she walked closer.

“My name’s Lennox Jane. I’ll be sewing you up today,” she introduced herself.

I took her tiny hand in mine, and shook it twice, up and down, before dropping it as if she’d burned me.

Electric shocks had poured into my hand from hers the moment our skin touched, and both of our eyes had widened.

“Are you a doctor?” I asked.

She shook her head. “No, I’m a PA, or physician’s assistant. Is that okay?”

I nodded. “Yeah.”

Was she even old enough to be that? She looked to be twenty two at most. Didn’t that shit take a lot of time to get accomplished?

She nodded her own head, and then gestured to the bed with her hand. “Have a seat and let me see what’s going on.”

My sister didn’t bother to move at all, which was why I sat on her.

“Goddammit, Bennett, you fat fucker,” she growled, pushing at my back with her knees to free her hand.

Lennox’s eyes narrowed at Payton. “If you’d move off the bed, then he wouldn’t have sat on you.”

Payton narrowed her eyes at Lennox, but nonetheless moved off the bed and went to her husband.

Max yanked her down onto his lap and promptly covered her mouth with his hand when she would’ve made a move to say something.

When I moved my eyes back to the sweet thing in front of me, I was surprised to see her not studying my face, but my hands.

I looked down, surprised that she’d even seen them over the bloody scratches on my face.

“Your knuckles might need a little Derma-bond, but other than that they look good. Open and close your hand for me,” she said, sticking her tiny hand in mine. “Good, squeeze.”

I did, unsure of if she wanted me to really squeeze, or just show her that I could.

I went with just showing her that I could so I didn’t crush her hands.

She looked like a crier.

“Excellent, I don’t see anything other than that wrong. That face of yours, though, will probably need a few stitches. Once the nurse gets them cleaned up, I’ll come and take a look, okay?” She asked, eyes on mine.

I nodded, trying to figure out just what it was about her that was so different. So intriguing.

She didn’t give me long to stare, though. She left without another backwards glance, and the room stayed silent for a full minute while everyone processed what they were thinking.

“Did she look like that girl off of House to you?” Payton whispered to her husband.

House, the TV show.

Payton was obsessed with that show and the show’s main actor, House.
Regardless, people gave him his space.
He was screwed up, and everyone knew it. He got tattoos because he liked the pain. He was standoffish. He didn’t have many friends outside of work. And the only thing he had going for him was that he was a good cop.
Everyone wondered about him, but no one asked. The only one that didn’t treat him as if he was screwed up was Nikki Pena, a woman that he couldn’t have.
Nikki was that girl. The one that everyone loved. The one girl that he’d destroy if he let her have her way. What did she want?
Him.
But, he couldn’t give her him. She didn’t deserve what it would take to be with him. So Michael would suffer in silence…or so he thought.
The woman who loved him had different ideas.

Chapter 1

I licked it. So it’s mine.

-Fact of life

Michael

“You’ll need to make sure you get to the house by six if you want to make it on time for dinner,” my father said tiredly. “You know how your mother gets when you don’t show up on time.”

I winced.

I did know how my mother got.

Irrational is what she got.

It’s as if she hadn’t been married to a doctor for the last thirty years.

I can’t name one single time that my father got to any event on time, whether it be a birthday, vacation, sporting event, graduation, or hell, even a fucking birth.

Not one time had I seen her lose it over my father being late, but her baby boy was late and suddenly the whole world stopped.

“I’ll try to be on time,” I told him. “But I’m not promising anything. I have to work until five thirty; it takes nearly thirty minutes to get to your house from the station. And that’s if I leave on time. I told her to make sure she held the party later, but she wouldn’t listen.”

“Joslin wanted six,” my father told me hesitantly, opening the door to his office. “And that’s when Dean could be there.”

I squeezed my hands tightly into fists, trying my hardest to not punch a hole in the wall with my fist.

I had no earthly idea why my mother continued to invite my ex-wife.

Dean was at least my fuckin’ brother, and I could understand why he’d have to be there.

It was as if my mom didn’t care that Joslin was no longer married to me. Usually the family chooses the child over the child’s ex.

We were together for a little over a year and a half when I found out she’d cheated.

Granted, the reason she’d cheated had been my fault, or so she’d said, but that still didn’t give her the right to do that to me.

We’d taken vows. And I’d at least meant them.

Refraining from saying, ‘Fuck Joslin,’ I walked to the side doors of the hospital and to the ambulance bay with my father.

“I see,” I settled on.

My father’s face looked pensive, as if he wanted to say something, but didn’t know how to say it.

“Michael, I need to tell you something…” my father started.

I would’ve stayed to listen, but the mic at my shoulder started squawking.

“The nearest unit is needed at 5543 Pleasant Circle. Possible double homicide,” the dispatcher ordered.

Sighing, I turned and offered my hand to my pop.

“Gotta go, dad. I’ll try my hardest to get there on time, but I’m not promising anything,” I told him.

He nodded, looking for the world like he was upset that he hadn’t said what he had to say, and shook my hand before saying, “Be safe.”

My father, like my mother, hadn’t liked that I’d chosen to go into law enforcement.

They’d spent thousands and thousands of dollars to get me through medical school only for me to quit to join the Navy.

Once in the Navy, I’d continued my schooling. After I’d finished, and then got medically discharged due to some slight nerve damage in my left foot from a bomb exploding, did I decided that the medical field wasn’t really something I was much interested in anymore.

Which had pissed both my mother and father off.

Immensely.

But I’d hated it.

I’d only done medical school because it was expected.

None of my family could understand why I’d quit.

My mother was a nurse. My father was a doctor. My brother was a doctor, and my sister was a nurse.

They couldn’t see past the fact that I was happy. They could only see the millions of dollars I was flushing down the drain to be a SWAT officer.

Not to mention they were hardcore Democrats, and I was most definitely not.

My mind, however, screeched to a halt as I saw her.

Nikki.

She had long, rich brown hair, beautiful brown eyes, and stunning caramel skin.

Today, she was in her scrubs.

A dark gray color that, although it should look incredibly ugly, didn’t.

She was a phlebotomist and on the IV team. A licensed paramedic that worked as a tech in the ER. She went around doing IVs throughout the hospital, but mostly stayed down in the ER where she was needed the most.

She was also studying to be a midwife, and from what I’d learned from Nico, her brother and another member of the SWAT team, she was well on her way to graduating.

I was in love with the woman.

No if’s, and’s, or but’s.

So in love with her that I could barely be around her.

She was in love with me, too…or had been when we’d first met.

But I’d ruined that, like I always ruined every-fucking-thing.

See, I was an asshole.

A diagnosed asshole, but an asshole nonetheless.

I was bi-polar.

I take my meds religiously.

Yet, there were times…like when I told Nikki that I didn’t want to have kids with her… that the asshole slipped through, and took hold of innocent people, tearing apart relationships as collateral damage.

I’d not meant it to come out that way.

I’d actually meant it to come out the opposite way entirely.

I didn’t want to have kids fathered by me.

I didn’t want my children to suffer from what I had.

Being bi-polar was only the tip of the iceberg.

I battled with depression during the winter months.

I had ADD.

And swear to Christ I didn’t want to put a kid through that.

I was a prime example of a person that shouldn’t have kids.

But I was Nikki’s, even if Nikki wasn’t mine. At least not anymore.

She would forever have my heart, but I’d never hold hers.

It was better this way.

I was so fucked up that I literally couldn’t handle anymore.

And I didn’t want a woman like Nikki, someone so pure of heart, to have to deal with my shit. Because there sure the fuck was a lot of it.

Watching her until she went inside, I finally pulled out of the parking lot and responded to the suspected double homicide.

And once again it reemphasized the fact that some people really shouldn’t have kids.

Pulling into the yard that housed a double wide trailer, I walked up to the front door where an elderly couple was standing.
