Everything I knew was a lie. Everyone I loved betrayed me.
I’m no stranger to being alone. Even in my darkest hour, I knew I could count only on myself. Now, I have nothing and for the first time in my life I have to let someone else save me.
Looking out at the building in front of us, my whole body is tense, ready to kick down the door and drag Delilah out of this nasty place by her hair.

“This is it,” the driver tells me. “I can wait here for you or come back later.”

“You can go but stay close. I’ll call when I’m done.”

“Yes, sir.”

Knowing Nic, he probably has a backup team posted a few blocks away. He offered to come with me, but I figured a quick in and out would be easier. At least, if everything goes as planned.

Stepping out onto the sidewalk, the only light source is the old neon sign on the front of the brick building. KISS is the name, but the I is burned out, making the sign read KSS instead. There are no working streetlights either, which is most likely by design, considering it’s a brothel.

Letting my growing irritation get the best of me, I slam the car door shut harder than necessary before heading to the entrance. Lifting my arm, I bang against the heavy wood with my fist until the door finally opens.

The bouncer on the other side looks like an ogre dressed in a suit too small for him. He’s a good bit taller than me, which is impressive since I’m six-two. The suit stretches off his muscular arm like it’s about to burst, and I can’t help but smirk. They put him here to fight people off. What a joke. I would take this guy out in less than twenty seconds.

“Can I help you?” ogre guy asks.

“Yes, I’m here to talk to your boss. I want to buy one of your girls.”

“You can rent our girls. We don’t sell them.”

“How about you keep being a guard dog while the adults talk business?”

His nostrils flare, and his hands turn to melon-sized fists, but he doesn’t make a move to attack me. Good boy.

After a moment, he pulls his phone from his pocket and punches in a number with his meaty fingers. “Boss, someone is here to see you about buying one of the girls.” I can hear someone talking on the other side, but it’s not clear enough to make out the words. “I see. I’ll send him up.” He ends the call and shoves his phone back into his pocket.

“Boss has been expecting you. But before you can go in, I need you to leave any weapons with me.” He reaches for a metal detector hanging next to the door and starts running it over my chest, then down my side to where my gun is sitting in my holster.

The metal detector goes off, and ogre guy holds out his hand like he is waiting for me to give him some candy. Rolling my eyes, I reach for my gun and hand it to him. We go through the same spiel with the gun tucked in my waistband and again with the knife in my boot.

Once I’m completely unarmed, he steps to the side and points down the hallway. “Go to the end of this hall, up the stairs. First door on the right.”

Not wanting to waste any time, I shove past him and follow his direction. As I move through the house. I notice armed guards in every hallway, cameras in every corner, and most of the doors are made of steel instead of wood. Fuck. This might be harder than I anticipated.

I don’t bother knocking when I get to the door I was sent to. I pull the door open and step inside the lavish office that doesn’t fit the rest of the building. The large space is sleek and stylish, while the rest of the place looks exactly like you’d imagine, run down and sleazy.

“Lucas, what a surprise to see you here.” Nathaniel grins, sarcasm dripping from his voice.

“Cut the crap,” I warn, stepping into his office and kicking the door shut behind me. “Where is she?”

“Please, come in, make yourself comfortable.”

“Where. Is. She?” I grind my teeth together so hard that my ears hurt.

“Delilah is in her room, getting ready for her next customer.”

“I’m taking her back to Corium. She needs to face her punishment for trying to kill another student.”

“That’s odd. She told me it was your daughter who let her go. Is Aspen being punished as well?”

“She is being dealt with accordingly, inside school walls. It’s Delilah who needs to return.”

“Actually, she does not. You let her go, and she is working here now. I must say, I was surprised to find out about your attachment to her. According to rumors, she was staying in your apartment at Corium. Did you not have enough fun with her?”
Confusion flashes over her face a second before her baby-blue eyes go wide, searching mine for my intention. I wonder what she sees or what she thinks I’m doing. I don’t really know myself.

Whatever she sees has her frantically grabbing at my arm holding her in place. Her mouth opens, but nothing besides a strangled gag comes out. The sound has me pumping faster, and the way her skin is turning a hue of purple has my balls tightening. Tears form in the corner of her eyes. Fascinated, I watch each one roll down the side of her cheek, wishing she was wearing makeup just so I could see it smear all over.

Of course, Charlotte doesn’t need to wear anything on her face. She has the kind of skin other women pray for.

Panicked, she starts fighting me in earnest, trying to push me off by bucking her hips and digging her sharp nails into my skin. Her fight only makes her pussy tighter and gets me more excited.

I’m holding her life in my hand. I could end it now, snuff it out and watch the life drain from her eyes just like I do with the poor guys who dare to step in the ring with me.

But this… this is different. Charlotte is an innocent woman who hasn’t done anything. She didn’t ask for this, nor does she deserve it. Maybe that’s the reason my usual numb self is so fucking excited. I’ve killed so many men that it barely scratches an itch anymore.

Smiling, I fuck her as hard as I can. Sweat drips down my forehead, and my own breath is labored from exhaustion. Charlotte is still scratching my arm like a wild cat, scratching me so deeply that I know it’s going to leave scars.

Her face is turning deep blue, and a small vein in her right eye has burst, filling the white part with an angry red. Grinding myself deep inside her until I finally blow. My vision blurs, and my whole body shakes from exhaustion.

Releasing her throat, I collapse on top of her just as she struggles to suck in a breath. She immediately throws herself into a coughing fit while shoving at me, trying to push me away.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” she creaks, barely getting out the words between her efforts to suck in air.

“Everything,” I whisper against her skin.

“Get off me, Lucas!” she yells in my ear, making my brain hurt.

I roll to the side and onto my back. Charlotte scrambles off the bed and gathers her stuff in a hurry. I watch her get dressed frantically as big tears roll down her beautiful face. Her cheeks have returned to their normal color, but red-bluish spots remain on her delicate neck.

“You came inside me. ” Her hoarse voice cracks at the end. “I told you I’m not on birth control.”

“Take some money from the dresser.” Money fixes everything.

“I’m not a prostitute.”

“You oughta be with that pussy.”

“You’re a fucking psychopath!” She leaves the room, slamming the door shut behind her before the only two words that come to my mind leave my mouth.

“I know.”

1

DELILAH

I pull back the curtain covering the window, peering out of it and into the parking lot. I’ve been hiding in this hotel room for days now, trying to build up the courage to leave town. I know I have to. It’s no longer a should scenario. There’s no other option.
So much pain, I can’t even pinpoint where it’s coming from. Where am I hurt? My head, my leg, or my stomach? Everything?

I must have been hit by a bus. Any minute now, I’ll wake up in some hospital, my parents standing beside my bed, worrying and waiting for me to open my eyes.

The smell of rubbing alcohol is thick in the air, adding to my hospital theory. The only thing missing is the sound of a heart-rate monitor beeping in the background.

I strain my ears, trying to make out any other sound, but there is nothing for a long time. When I finally do hear the creaking of a door, I try to pry my eyes open, but they feel like someone glued them shut.

“She looks like she’s in pain,” a deep raspy voice says. The man’s voice sounds somewhat familiar, but I can’t match it to a face at the moment.

“I haven’t given her any pain medicine yet. I just got the toxicology report back. I had to know what kind of drug she was on first,” another man explains. I don’t think I know this guy at all. At least his voice sounds completely foreign to me.

Someone touches my arm, and my body jolts, sending ripples of pain across my skin.

“Give her the pain meds already. I don’t want her like this when my son gets back.” The voice is closer now as if he is standing right next to me. I’m certain I know this man, but I can’t figure out who it is.

I give opening my eyes another try, forcing my heavy eyelids to open just a tiny bit. It takes a lot of energy, but I am finally able to get my eyelids to move.

At first, I can’t see anything but bright light. After I blink a few times, my blurry vision slowly adjusting, I’m able to make out two men. Both stand beside my bed, and just like I thought, I don’t know one of them. The other, however, I know very well. Xander Rossi.

My first instinct is to be scared, to scramble off the bed and get away from him, but one look at his face has me pausing to reevaluate the whole situation.

Every interaction I’ve had so far with Xander has been hostile. Even when he wasn’t openly threatening me, he always had a grim, I-will-kill-you glint in his eyes. Not today. Today, his eyes are soft, creases of concern are edged into his forehead, and his lips are pulled into a frown. Today, he looks… tired.

“Don’t try to get up. Just relax and let the medicine work,” the unknown man says. “This should take care of the pain. You will be much more comfortable soon.”

I watch him attach something to the IV drip standing next to my bed. It takes me another moment to realize that IV is attached to my arm. My gaze wanders from the clear tube sticking out of my arm to the bruised skin around my wrist.

What happened? Why am I here, and where even is here?

The man, who I think is a doctor, steps away, but Xander remains by my side. “I normally don’t let people I do not trust enter my home. This is my sanctuary, Aspen, the one place I can let my guard down and be with my family in peace. I don’t like you being here at all, but given the special circumstances, I’m allowing you to stay. This will be your sanctuary, too, while you recover. No one will harm you while you are inside these walls. Do not make me regret this kindness.”

I open my mouth to ask him why I’m here, but my throat is so dry it only makes me cough. The sudden movement has pain exploding through my chest and abdomen. My eyes squeeze shut as tears roll down my cheeks. I try to curl up, wanting to hold my torso as if that could fix me, but my arms are so heavy.

As if this day couldn’t get any weirder, when I open my eyes again, Xander is holding out a glass of water in front of my lips. Sliding his hand under my neck, he lifts my head carefully so I can drink. I take a greedy sip, letting the cold liquid soothe my burning throat.

With the same gentle touch, he lays my head back and sets the glass on the nightstand. Just as I let myself sink back into the soft pillow, I can feel the medicine spreading through my veins. Slowly, the pain fades away, and a warm and fuzzy feeling takes its place.

“Get some rest,” Xander instructs before turning around to leave.

Suddenly, I’m scared. Scared to be alone, and I don’t know why. “Wait,” I croak, making him stop to look at me over his shoulder. “I-I don’t… I mean, I—” I stumble over the words. How do I tell him that I don’t want to be alone?
I can’t tell if this is reality or a bad dream. Disorientation leaves me confused. I’m not sure what is up or down. I force my eyes open once more, even though I’m tempted to keep them shut.

Everything is spinning, and an insistent ringing fills my ears.

I look down and see that I’m still strapped to the seat. Rubble from the crash surrounds me, and I realize the entire side of the helicopter is blown out.

I lift my arm and reach out to touch the tree we crashed into. My fingertips run over the rough surface of the bark, scratching my already tender skin.

Oh, god! It’s not a dream. Panicked, I survey what’s left of the helicopter or at least what I can see from where I’m sitting. The pilot is slouched forward in his seat, but I don’t have to ask if he’s alive or not. Not with the tree branch poking through his chest.

“Remain calm. We’re experiencing what seems to be some type of engine failure,” the pilot yells as the drop of altitude causes my stomach to flip.

I grip the seatbelt straps a little tighter and squeeze my eyes shut. Oh, god. I knew this was a mistake. That something bad was going to happen. Engine failure? How? We just took off.

“Oh, shit! We’re going to need to prepare for an emergency landing.”

My eyes pop open at the pilot’s words, and I look out the window at the rugged landscape lined with trees.

“We won’t make it. There is nowhere to land,” I yell over the roar of the engines.

“There are no other options,” he shouts.

The smell of fuel tickles my nostrils, dragging me out of the memory. I let out a groan, my eyes catching on flames as they flicker, burning parts of the aircraft.

I try to lift my arms once more, but my limbs feel like they weigh ten thousand pounds, and while my heart is beating hard in my chest, I feel nothing. My body is numb, but I already know I’m simply in shock. Adrenaline is coursing through my veins, keeping the pain at bay, but that’s not going to last forever.

Looking around one more time, my body tells me to stay put, but my brain tells me to get up and find shelter. Forcing my limbs to work, I unstrap and push out of my seat. My arms are like Jell-O, but somehow, manage to hold me.

However, it’s not my arms that seem to be the problem after all. As soon as I move to take a step forward, an unexpected pain shoots up my leg. Groaning in agony, I lose my footing and fall backward into the seat.

I grit my teeth, fighting off tears, waiting for the lightning bolts of pain to subside. My thoughts spiral as I try to devise a plan to get out of the plane. I have to start moving soon. The smell of fuel becomes more pungent every second I remain here.

Looking down at my leg, I’m positive it is broken. Not only can’t I put any weight on it, but my foot is slightly bent to the right. There is no way I can walk with this injury. The only option I have is to crawl out of here.

While I build up the strength to move once more, I survey the rest of my body for any other injuries. My head is pounding, making it hard to think. Every breath I take causes my lungs to burn, and I know I’m going to have some type of bruising from the seatbelt.

I can’t put into words how thankful I am to be alive. My eyes drift to the pilot, I didn’t know the man, but I’m sure he had a family, at least a wife, and maybe kids. They’ll never get to see him alive again. No one will see me alive either if I don’t get out of this helicopter.

That thought ignites a fire in my belly, giving me a boost of adrenaline. Yes, my leg fucking hurts, but I’ll be dead if I don’t start moving, and I can’t die out here. I won’t. I haven’t endured all I have to die in this stupid fucking forest outside Corium.

With my teeth gritted together, I slowly lift myself out of the chair. My chest heaves with the effort it takes not to put any weight on my broken leg, but with slow, precise movements, I make it to the edge of the opening. Looking down, I notice there is more than a foot of air between me and the ground.

Which means getting off this piece of crap is going to hurt.

This part is going to be the most grueling, as there is no way for me to get off the helicopter without dropping to the ground. I stare out the opening, my muscles quaking, exhaustion tightening its hold on me. Keep going! a voice yells inside my mind.
She came here for protection, but that’s the last thing she's going to find.
Welcome to Corium University, where the most dangerous criminals in the world send their offspring. Assassins, mafia leaders, arms dealers and art thieves.
You name it, this college houses them. Here nothing can touch them.
Upon arriving I knew Aspen would be here, she was the daughter of our enemy, a snake in the grass like her father. I had no intention of sparring with her. That is until she opened her pretty little mouth. One sentence and she became my next target, and a woman that I would do anything to see on her knees at my feet.
If she thought the university was the only nightmare she would have to face, she was wrong. I was the king, and this was my kingdom.
**King of Corium is a dark romance novel, that contains dark themes, including dub-con, non-con. It is not a standalone novel.**
A year ago, I was a different person. Happy, normal, and content with my life. I couldn’t think of one thing I would’ve changed about my life, but now, if I could, I’d change it all.

Every-fucking-thing.

It wasn’t like my father had sheltered me from our namesake or the violent and dangerous things we did. The blood running in my veins was mafia blood; my father had bled for our name, and I know I will do the same someday.

Growing up, I didn’t think there would ever be a time when that would change or that I would want to escape the life I was born into and hide from the rest of the world, but that day came one year ago, and since then, everything’s been headed in a downward spiral.

The happiness inside me shattered and evaporated into thin air, making me the vile pit of anger and hate. I didn’t need this pathetic university, but it was this or sitting in that giant house, a reminder of everything I wanted to leave behind looming over my head. At least now, I might be able to escape my mother’s constant worrying and my father’s watchful eyes.

“Ready?” I ask, glancing over at Ren.

He shrugs, his hands still tucked perfectly into the pockets of his black jeans. Even with all the money his family has, he still chooses to wear the least expensive clothing. Ren is modest at best, never showing or bragging about what he has. It seems like he cares about nothing, but the truth is, he simply doesn’t give a shit about material things. The single most important thing in the world to him isn’t even a thing, but a person. His sister.

Sometimes, I think the only reason I’ve been so close to my sisters is because I see how Ren is with Luna. My father once told me it’s because of how they grew up, and that they only had each other for so long, which is why he’s so protective over her.

Ren has always been her protector, and I doubt that will ever change.

“If you want my honest opinion, I’d rather jump off a cliff, but…” His voice trails off.

You and me both, I want to say, but I keep the words to myself. The last thing I need is what I’ve said getting back to my father and him thinking I’m suicidal. Then I really won’t have a choice in coming or going.

“If you didn’t want to go, you didn’t have to. I’m sure your father would’ve allowed you to take some time off or do something else.”

Ren understands my life more than anyone else ever will, but that doesn’t mean he knows what it’s like to have a father who never takes no for an answer or to be dealt the blow that we were just dealt.

“Believe me, I made the best choice.” I speak through my teeth, staring off into the nothingness.

It wasn’t like I was going to a normal university, where I’d be bored out of my mind.

No, Corium University is where high-profile criminals around the world send their children. While normal parents send their kids off to state universities, expecting them to get a decent education and good job, our parents ship their children off to Corium, a school that will teach them how to become better criminals.

I don’t need training or guidance, but I want to go anyway. Which is why, for the unforeseen future, cold-ass Alaska will be my home. I want as many miles as I can get between my family and me. I can only hope that the more miles I put between us, the less the pulsing ache in my chest will bleed.

The sound of the helicopter propellers slicing through the air invades my ears, bringing me back to the present. I look up just in time to see my father’s plane—which brought us to this small Alaskan airport—taking off in the distance. The private plane dropped us here, and the school’s helicopter will take us to the university.

The wind whips through my hair, and I shield my eyes as rock and dust debris swirl around us. Ren is standing beside me as still as a statue. We’ve been best friends since his parents adopted him and his sister, Luna, when they were kids. Most people think we’re cousins, but I’ve always seen him as my brother.

It's a little ironic that most people don't even know my actual cousin because my uncle chose to keep his only daughter hidden from the world.

Shoving my hands deep into the pockets of my jacket, I exhale and start toward the helicopter. I don’t have to look back to know Ren is following me. We agreed to do this together. Well, more like I told him he had to come with me. Surprisingly, it didn’t take much convincing. I figured he would fight me since leaving meant being away from Luna, but unlike me, Ren will travel home to visit his parents and sister. He’ll call and talk to them.
