Please. This is an Alexa Riley hero. She’s not going anywhere.
The wind is coming in so hard I can feel the house shake, the windows rattling. There are a million places my mind should be right now—worrying about the already-high lake flooding, the fences that might be knocked down, enabling cattle to escape, or the oil riggings being damaged. But none of that seems to matter. I can’t even be bothered with the idea of it. Which isn’t normal for me. I like everything done and handled. Everything organized. Chaos drives me crazy, and normally a storm would have me pacing, wondering about the mess I’d have to clean in the morning.

All these things are small in comparison to what my mind insists on focusing on. All my attention is solely on the woman lying in my bed. I can’t take my eyes off her. Haven’t been able to since I found her lying in the middle of my fields, completely alone.

Her midnight-black hair was spread out all around her. A thin white dress clung to her curvy little body, her feet bare. She looked like an angel sent to tempt a man. Almost like she’d fallen right out of the sky and onto my ranch. Part of me thought that it makes her mine. This is Texas, after all, and possession is nine-tenths of the law.

How she’d really gotten there, I had no idea. I just knew from the moment I found her she was mine. Something deep inside me told me she was running from something, and I’m the one she ran to. Why else would a young woman be out in the middle of nowhere with no shoes, the nearest road over a mile away?

Maybe the gash on her head had confused her. She’d lost her way somehow, but still that didn’t seem to make sense either. I didn’t know what had brought her here, but that didn’t matter. She’s mine now. If someone’s chasing her, I’ll make sure they never find her.

When I couldn’t get her to wake, I picked her up off the ground. She weighed almost nothing, even with all those curves she had. I’d not only seen them but felt them when I pulled her body to mine, cradling her in my arms. I carefully held on to her as I climbed back onto my horse.

“Don’t let them find me.”

Her soft words ring over and over again in my head. She’d said those words as she nuzzled in closer to me. I could feel her lips on my neck the whole ride back to my home. It wasn’t an easy ride, holding her like that, but I made do. There was no other choice. I sure as hell wasn’t leaving her, even if there wasn’t a storm rolling in on top of us. The rain had already started to pour, and I barely got her into the house and my horse in the barn before all hell broke loose.

I wasn’t sure what to do with her at first. So I did the only thing I could think of. I took care of her. I stripped her of her wet clothes, doing the best I could to not look at her, no matter how much I wanted to. I couldn’t just let her lie in them, and I couldn’t figure how to get the damn dress off. But one good tug and the thing ripped right down the middle. I pulled it from her and tossed it to the floor before covering her with the blanket I keep at the end of my bed.

She didn’t feel like she had a fever when I checked her, and the cut on her head wasn’t deep enough to need stitches, not that we could go anywhere if she needed medical attention. Not with the storm raging like it was. Besides, she didn’t need to go anywhere. I liked her right where she was.

As I look down at her, I don’t know what to do next besides stand here. She looks like a porcelain doll in the middle of my giant bed. I never thought my bed was big until she was in the center of it, hardly taking up any space. God knows how long I’ve been standing here already. My wet clothes are already starting to dry.

She lets out a little sigh, her full lips parting a fraction before her pink tongue darts out, wetting them.

“Fuck,” I mumble, closing my eyes and turning my back to her.

The things I’m thinking about while she lies passed out on my bed would send an angel running. If that’s what she is. I haven’t even seen her eyes yet, and I can’t stop thinking about what color they might be.

Knowing I need some space before I find myself crawling into bed with her, I walk over to my dresser and start digging around for some sleep bottoms, or whatever they’re called. I know someone got me some for Christmas last year. I think. Normally I sleep naked, not having to worry about anyone else being around. I’m always alone here unless my sister Dolly pops in to drop something off.
Absolutely!
Straight up,” I say, leaning against the bar, not wanting to sit down. I’d been in a saddle all day riding fence lines after the bad storm we’d had, and sitting is the last thing I want to do right now. In fact, all I want to do is shoot whiskey until my body makes me sit. Then I can drag myself to the hotel next door and crash into a mattress that has probably seen better days. But I don’t care. For a night away from the Johnson farm, I’d sleep on a bed of nails.

Fuck, I hate that place. One second I think I’m getting what I want, the next I’m in a living hell. All I ever wanted was to be a foreman and maybe have my own farm one day. I had put having my own farm on the back burner and concentrated on running the Johnson farm for Cash McCallister, but lately things have turned into a living hell, and I’m starting to question if maybe it’s time to move on.

Cash bought the land a few years back because the farm ran along his. I’d been in charge of it since old man Johnson owned it, but it eventually became too much for their family to handle. He sold it off to Cash, and I kept running it for him. I’ve been at Cash’s side for as long as I can remember. He taught me everything I know about working a farm, but this isn’t working for me anymore.

When Cash bought it, he’d let the owners keep the house with a small patch of land around it, but a little over a year ago, Johnson’s daughter June had come home after a bitter divorce. She’s the reason the farm has become so unbearable lately. She’s slowly driving me insane. I’m hoping a weekend away will give me time to reboot. Staying in a shitty hotel for a few days sounds like paradise right now. Anything to keep June’s claws from me. There’s only one woman I want digging her nails into me.

Dolly Jennings’ face appears in my mind, and I want to groan. All that red hair that I can never seem to pull my eyes away from, and those big dimples that take up her full cheeks. She looks so goddamn sweet. No matter how hard I try, she’s never far from my thoughts. The bartender, Jimmy, drops my glass on the bar, breaking me from my spell. He’s brought me the only thing that can make me forget about the woman I can’t ever have. That little firecracker who’s way out of my league. Too sweet for a man my age. Too good for me to be thinking about. Too pure for all the things I want to do to her. But it’s been this way since she strolled into my life years ago, easily catching my attention. No one missed Dolly. She’d light up a night with no moon just by smiling.

I pick up the glass of whiskey and shoot it back, feeling the burn of the alcohol move through me. I drop it back down on the old wooden bar, praying it makes the image of her disappear. Although deep down I don't want it to go away. I pause for a second and then decide to order another when June steps in front of me. Great. Here we go.

“Hey, cowboy. Lucky seeing you here.” She winks at me, leaning up against the bar and standing a little too close. Her fancy perfume fills my lungs, making my throat burn more than the whiskey did. She’s always like this. I never understand what June is up to. Tonight she’s dressed in cowboy boots and shorts so short I’m not sure you can call them that. She plays up the cowgirl image in the way she dresses, but I’ve never seen her work on the land a day in her life.

She’s a Beverly Hills cowgirl, if there is even such a thing. June doesn’t look like she could last an hour doing real work. Her straight bleach-blonde hair is never out of place and her face is covered with too much makeup. June wants to play make believe, and she wants me to pretend with her—something I have no intention of doing.

“June,” I say, taking a step back, but she follows me.

“Brandon.” She does a little eye-roll, like she’s teasing or we’re playing some flirting game. Her hand comes to my chest. “You still can’t call me JJ? Everyone does.”

Her fake smile lights up her face. I know she can turn it on and off in an instant. I’d seen her do it time and time again to her own parents. She was the reason they’d lost their farm to begin with. They had to sell it to clean up after their daughter. June could spend money faster than a dog could lick his balls.
Blake Jennings has always wanted what his parents had: a sweet, simple love that lasts a lifetime. And when he meets Luciana, he knows she’s the one.
Luciana Salazar comes from a tight-knit family that pushes her to follow her dreams. When she takes a job on the Braided Rope Ranch, the last thing she expects is to fall in love with its owner, the dark-haired man she’s seen watching her in town.
Roping the Virgin is over-the-top sweet, with a heaping scoop of sexy steam. Blake sweeps his Luciana off her feet and gives her the life she’s always dreamed of.
Warning: Ridiculous is almost close enough to describe this irresistible short story. Come back to the Jennings farm and pull up a rocking chair. You’ll like the way they treat you.

Chapter 1

Blake

I slam the door closed behind me as I enter my brother Ty’s home, making his wife jump. Her hand flies to her chest, and her mouth drops open in surprise. She shakes her head at me then lets out a sigh. Everyone in the Jennings family is loud in some way. We’ve never been a quiet bunch.

“Little early to be mad,” Mary-Jane says, going back to cutting something on the kitchen counter.

The smell of bacon and eggs fills the room and makes my mouth water. But she’s right. It is too early to be as fucking pissed as I am. I’m more than pissed. I’m walking around in a state of agony and there is only one person who can fix it. And she won’t give me the time of day.

This was the fourth morning in a row I’d woken up from a wet dream about her. This time it was of her riding me. Digging her nails into my chest as she took her pleasure and moaned my name. I had a vision of her dark hair, usually in a tight braid, spilling free and falling around her. I watched it bounce with every glide of her hips down on my cock.

“Fuck,” I mumble, trying to push the thought from my head as my cock comes to life. It can’t be normal for a guy to walk around like this. I’m constantly rock hard, and it never seems to ease. The smallest thought of her and he’s throbbing, begging to have her. It’s driving me fucking insane with need. It’s eating at me, and I’m starting to feel like I’m going to crack. I don't know what will happen when that time comes.

Mary-Jane rolls her eyes when what sounds like a bull comes stomping down the hallway. My older brother fills the room, and he’s sporting a pissed-off face, too. I’m sure we look identical in our frustration.

“You fu-freaking knock when you come in here. You had no clue if my wife was even dressed,” Ty barks, pointing at me.

I have to stifle a laugh at the correction of his own curse word. No one curses more than my brother. Well, like he used to. Now that their little boy, TJ, is here, Ty is trying to clean up his language. It’s not working out so great.

“And you.” He turns to look at his wife, who places her hands on her hips, clearly not intimidated by Ty in the least. Even if he is easily double her size. “Why was the door unlocked?”

“I fed little TJ out on the porch swing early this morning. When he fell back asleep, I put him back down,” she tells him tartly.

Ty walks over to her, picking her up and placing her on the counter before stepping between her legs.

“I didn’t even feel you get out of bed.” He says it so softly I almost don’t hear it.

“’Cause you’re not sleeping. You work this farm all day, then you try to get up with me for feedings.”

“I worry about you getting worn out,” he tells her.

“The only one getting worn out is you. I’m fine, Ty,” she tells him as he drops his head to hers and gives her a kiss.

I stand there and watch, so jealous my teeth hurt. I’ve always been the laidback one in the family, and now I feel like a live wire is shocking the shit out of anyone I come near. I never thought Ty would be the first one out of us to get married. Dolly’s still a little young, so I’d always thought I’d be the first. Hell, before Mary-Jane showed up, Ty couldn’t even get it up, compliments of a bull-riding accident a few years previous. I’m starting to wish I had the same problem. I never have any blood left in my brain with it all in my dick. Maybe that's why I always come across as an asshole, when before I was always the coolest of the Jennings.

Then there’s Trace. He doesn’t even know women exist. The only thing he looks at with doe eyes is food. Has been that way as long as I can remember.

Now me, I always knew I wanted what our parents had. But I didn’t think that was possible. I’d never met a woman who even sparked an interest within me to head down that road. Not until the day I saw Luciana and I knew she was it. She was what I’d been waiting for. She hit me like a truck loaded down with bricks. Might sound crazy, but it was there and I knew it. One look and I knew she’d be mine. I felt it bone deep, something I’d never felt before in my life.

The first time I laid eyes on her, she was standing outside the veterinary office in town. I was across the road from her, talking to some tourists and giving them directions, when my eyes landed on her. I stopped mid-sentence and stared at her. When her eyes finally came to mine and she gave me a soft smile, all the air left my lungs. But it was gone as fast as she gave it, and she turned to walk inside the clinic. Since that day, I’ve been trying to get her attention and I’m failing miserably. I’m not used to this. I’m the light-hearted one in the family. The smooth talker. But Luciana wasn’t having any of it. The most I could get out of her were one-word responses, no matter how hard I tried. But I’ve seen her with other people. With everyone else she laughs and smiles. I’ve even seen her giving people some sass. I want that aimed in my direction, but I can’t get it from her. When she sees me coming, a concrete wall falls into place and she does everything she can to avoid me. It’s driving me fucking insane. At first I thought it was cute, but as time goes on, I feel like I’m going to explode from need for her. Like I’m running out of oxygen. If I don’t have her soon, I feel like I’ll die. And I don’t mean beneath me in my bed. Don’t get me wrong, I want that, too, but it’s more than that. I need her. All of her.

1

Mary-Jane

“How did you get yourself into this, Mary-Jane?” I ask myself for the twentieth time today. I was set to arrive at my new temporary place of employment in a little over two hours and dread was weighing heavily on me. I just hope the clothes I brought will do well to hide this little baby bump that keeps getting bigger and bigger by the day. I’m running out of time.

I let out a long sigh as I absently rub my hand over the bump. This little boy has become my whole world. In all my planning I never thought this would happen. Just when I thought I was getting something I’d wanted so dearly, everything else in my life started to fall apart. Just goes to show you: you can plan everything how you like, but someone else can come to kick it out from under you, and you have to try and pick the pieces up the best you can. This time, though, it isn't my pieces I’m picking up. I have a baby to protect and to make a life for.

“I promise, little man, I won’t let anyone take you from me.” I rest both hands on my stomach, praying my words are true and that I’m not making a giant mistake by going to see the one person who could take my baby away from me. My heart clenches at the thought of losing him. I can’t. I won’t, I correct myself. Losing this baby isn’t an option.

Someone couldn’t be that heartless, could they? To take a baby from its mother? I’m not so sure here, though. If what I’ve found out about my baby’s father is true, then heartless is pretty damn close.

Last week my doctor told me that they’d made a mistake. A giant one. They’d given me a specimen from the wrong sperm donor. Someone who wasn’t a willing donor at all.

I’d gotten two giant kicks in one day. I’d lost my job and was possibly losing my child. The clinic said they had to inform the man who’d donated. I’d asked for his name and requested they give me some time before they contacted him. They were reluctant at first, but they’d given me both after I threatened a lawsuit.

After a little online stalking I’d found my baby’s father. When I’d seen who he was, I’d lost my breath. He was known all over Texas, or so it seemed with all the articles a few years back. He used to ride bulls, but now he owns a big ranch down south, almost two hours from here. The place I’ll be calling home for a little while.

A lot of the articles weren’t flattering. He was one of the best bull riders, having won dozens of competitions, but he had a reputation to go along with it. Many articles and posts I found called him an arrogant asshole. Meaner than the bulls he rode. It made me think he wasn’t going to have any compassion when it came to this situation. Or maybe he’d just sign on the dotted line and let me and my son go.

Or he could try to take him from me. He had the money. The thought of running kept fluttering through my mind. I had money saved up, and made a small profit when I’d sold my little house just two days ago, but something about running felt wrong.

I had to be sure that if I did choose to run, I was making the right decision. That I was protecting my baby, making sure we could be together. That’s why I had to do this. I had to go meet this man. See who he was in person, because you can’t always believe rumors.

Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. Ideally, maybe we could share custody. I could get a place in town not far from his ranch. Find a local job there and we could do this together, if that’s what he wanted. It wasn’t what I signed up for when I’d decided I wanted a baby. I’d made the choice to go this alone, which I’ve been doing my whole life.

What if he has a wife or girlfriend? The thought makes my stomach turn. I could be turning their lives upside down. Then my baby would have another mom. A lump forms in my throat. It feels like every time I get something good going in my life, someone or something is trying to rip it from me.

I searched and searched for anything on him with someone else and came up with nothing. I’d read article after article on his bull-riding days and never was a woman mentioned or pictured with him. He had a hard look on his very handsome face, so I’m not sure I’d want to stand next to him and pose for a picture either.
