I’m a no one, the daughter of a mistress. My life was spared to keep my best friend Emily safe. Now she’s back with her men, and I’ve been taken by Earl Valentine—the Beast.
The Monsters’ Crew sold me to him, and all he wants is my virginity. I’d die for Emily, so giving my body to this man is easy. But Earl’s not in any kind of rush. He wants to make me beg, to shatter all my defenses so all I can think about is him. No matter how hard I fight, I’m not trained to hate. With each touch, he makes me crave. With every kiss, I fall a little deeper. Under his spell, I have no power.
He wants me enough to fight for me. I may have fallen for the Beast, but he’s also mine. I just don’t realize how much.
Can I truly tame the Beast? Or is he acting the part to get me where he wants?

All my life, I’d been told how useless I was. How I’d destroyed my mother’s figure. Stopped her from finding the perfect man. How men didn’t want a woman with a kid. Before we moved to Crude Hill, I either hid out in my old bedroom when she had guests or left. I’d spent many nights camped out at a park, or down by one of the lakes while she pretended to be a single woman.

I did all of that out of love.

I loved my mother.

So much.

She was the worst and best person in my life. I loved her more than anything. Then he came along. A man with smooth words, and within a matter of months, we’d gone from living a life of struggle to luxury. He was a married man with a family. He didn’t require me to leave. Knew all about the daughter, and for a short time, everything was perfect. Or as perfect as it could have been. He’d told me straight, I wasn’t going to get anything out of the arrangement that he wasn’t willing to give. While he had my mother eating out of the palm of his hand, he had a whole host of other plans for me.

Strange how life turned out.

The same man who held the threat of my life over my head was the same man whose daughter I befriended. I didn’t do it on purpose. Emily was … everything. She was the best friend I never had before. She didn’t have to stick up for me, but she did.

She was the first and last person to put her life on the line for mine. It was because of her that I was alive.

Staring across my room, I couldn’t tear my gaze away from the door. I had no choice but to focus on something. I would be sick if I didn’t.

Earl Valentine.

Emily said she’d seen him. I’d hoped she’d been wrong, but now, for whatever reason, I’d been taken. I was locked away on a boat. Damn it. I hated this.

Why did people think it was so cool to go out in open water?

It was fucking scary.

Sickness swirled within my gut. All I wanted to do was throw myself overboard and vomit.

I didn’t.

I couldn’t.

The door was firmly locked from the outside.

Fucking fuckers.

I hadn’t eaten in hours.

What was this game? More importantly, what was his game? I’d met Earl once, and I couldn’t even be sure if it was the same man.

Seven years ago, at the party that had changed my life, I’d danced with a man. He’d held me, stared at me, and for a short time, I’d felt like the only person who had existed in his world.

Was it the same man?

I’d thought about him often over the years.

This was what I’d turned into. A woman so desperate for attention and affection, she’d imagined a man into some kind of being.

I sucked.

Big time.

After running fingers through my hair, I glanced around the room while wrapping my arms back around my legs and keeping my body right. With how unstable everything was, I didn’t want to let go of anything.

The water.

Why?

Ugh. I was going to be sick.

As if on cue, the door lock flicked open, and Earl Valentine stood in the doorway. Seven years was a long time, but I would recognize those shoulders and hands anywhere. The scar down his face wasn’t scary or ugly, but sexy, showing how dangerous he actually was.

Neither of us spoke.

I watched him.

Waiting.

Terrified.

Curious.

I was a lot of things all mixed into one.

He was right here, in front of me, well, a few feet away.

“You’re awake.”

“I want to go home. This isn’t funny.”

Earl smiled, but it wasn’t a nice one. Something sinister and dark lay behind his gaze, promising. I didn’t want to know this man too intimately.

There was a lot more to this man than what met the eye. After years of seeing my mother move from dick to dick, I’d gotten a pretty good read on them. I recognized a keeper, a loser, an asshole, and the man you really shouldn’t catch the eye of. Earl Valentine was one of those latter men.

“You think I’m doing this for your amusement?”

“What do you want?”

“A lot of things.”

“Last time I heard, it was a cherry you wanted to pop.” I hated speaking the words, but I wasn’t going to cower from this man.

Seven years, Emily and I had formed a life together. She was sad most of the time, but there were always rare sparks of light in our darkness.

I loved her like a sister, and right now, being trapped on a boat with this man, it would leave Emily alone.

Earl tilted his head to the side, and I realized I’d surprised him.

Good. I’d grown up.

Since I’d been alone with Emily, we only had each other to count on. No men. No fathers. No mothers. Just the two of us, and we’d been doing quite well on our own.
I should have been killed. That’s the rule. If one goes down, we all go down. Instead, I’m living in England with my best friend but I’m dying inside. Gael, Vadik, River, and Caleb, they’d made a deal and I had to live with that. They awakened me and now I’m nothing. They should have never made a deal with the devil.
One moment I’m in England, the next, I’m back at Crude Hill, in my Monsters’ house, at their mercy. They traded my friend for me. Only, they trusted the wrong people.
Since I’ve been gone, my men have changed. They’re not boys anymore, but men who know how to torture. They thought the threat to my life was over, but they never saw their own mistakes about to bite them in the ass.
Their fathers want to annihilate them. I’m their only weakness. Now it’s a race against time to find them before they get to me.
There’s four of them and one of me.
It should be easy.
But I’m a target and it has been a long time since I had to fight for my life. Only now, I’ve got to fight for a future I thought was dead.
If I die, I hope everyone is prepared for what they will unleash.
This is the concluding part of Emily, Gael, Vadik, River, and Caleb’s story. Crude Hill High will continue in other books.

The pain was unreal.

As I climbed into the car where my friends were, none of us spoke. What was the point in speaking? We’d just put our woman on a private jet with a whole new life mapped out. One that only our fathers knew about.

Gael stared out the window. River had the tip of the blade he’d stolen from Emily pressing into his thigh. From this angle, I knew he was pushing it in, slowly sinking it into his flesh. The tension of his jaw was a clear indicator.

Vadik’s hands were clenched into fists.

None of us were used to this level of pain. River probably was, but I couldn’t seem to stop it. All I wanted to do was scream and shout.

I sat behind the wheel without knowing what to say. There was nothing. No words.

Our entire life had just been put on a jet and was now making a new one without us. We didn’t know her brand-new name or where she’d be. She could be in some town close by, or another country.

“Do you think they’ll keep their word?” Gael asked.

“Yes,” River said. “They wouldn’t lie to us.”

“Oh, really? They were more than willing to kill the only woman we’ve ever loved.” Gael slammed the palm of his hand against the car window. “Fuck this. Fuck them. Why did we have to give her up?”

“We couldn’t allow them to kill her.” I didn’t know why I was making excuses. Gael knew why we’d done it.

“There’s four of us. We could have taken them. This is all fucking horseshit. I don’t … she was … I don’t…” Gael stopped speaking. One glance in the rearview mirror showed that he struggled with tears.

We’d gone through so much together, but I couldn’t recall any of us crying. It was kind of sad when I thought about it.

No tears.

We’d all accepted how our lives had turned out. It sucked.

“Do you just accept this?” Gael asked.

“I accept that we made the right choice with her. We made the choice she needed.”

“It wasn’t the right choice,” he said. “Not the right choice at all.” He climbed out of the car just as the jet took off. We all followed him, standing by his side as Emily was taken from us.

“She’s going to think we abandoned her,” Vadik said.

“We know we didn’t,” I said. “We have given her the best chance. The best opportunity to live. Try to think about what she’s now got. She’s got a full life ahead of her. One she’s going to enjoy more than anything.” I didn’t know if I was explaining this well or just trying to give a more involved reasoning for why we’d let our woman go. “She would know we loved her.”
Crude Hill High is unlike any other school. We learn to fight because we’re the kids who come from monsters. Caleb, River, Gael, and Vadik are the kings who rule. They may only be eighteen, but they’re dangerous, and I saved one of them. Rather than let it go, they want to know me. To save one is to protect all.
I’m used to being invisible, yet, to the Monsters’ Crew, I’m anything but. They won’t let me hide, determined to break down my walls that keep me—the daughter of a minion—safe. My father has very little power, and the only thing he values is my virginity, which I’m sure he’s more than willing to sell.
What’s more, I want to be with them every step of the way. I don’t know how I can make it work with four guys, but every single day, they convince me I can. In our world, there is no such thing as a happily-ever-after. Our lives are always on the edge of pain and death, and I should have known nothing good would last.
****This is part one of a duet. Emily and her Monsters will conclude in part two.
It wasn’t morbid or for some quest to finally find the end. At eighteen years old, I hadn’t really lived. There had to be more to life than this empty shell of nothing. Life seemed to be playing out, and the longer I was part of it, the less I seemed to be relevant. I didn’t fit in. I wasn’t part of any crowd. To most, I was a loser. I didn’t mind. It helped me to dwell in my thoughts of death. For all I knew, a lot of kids thought of dying. About how their final moments on this very earth were going to go.

Glancing around the cafeteria, I couldn’t help but wonder if that wasn’t a whole crock of shit. The pretty girls. All with their long hair, styled pretty much the same, but there was always one girl who liked to change it up. For the team here, it was Nancy. She ran with the pack but the truth was, she danced above them all.

Then, of course, around them were the jocks. The football crew who believed they ruled the entire school, but the truth was they weren’t in charge, not really. I’d firsthand seen them really bowing down to one group of people, and they sat in the corner. No one messed with them.

Monsters’ Crew or the Monsters’ Boys. Depending on who you spoke to. Caleb Falls, River Block, Gael Parson, and finally, Vadik Keller. All of them deadly. No one crossed them. Even now as I glanced at them, I saw River with a knife between his fingers. He flicked the blade back and forth as if it was nothing more than a pencil. I’d seen him do this many times and yes, he’d even nicked himself, but he’d often just lick it up or wipe the blood away on his pants.

They were all scary as fuck. Caleb, their leader, made all the decisions. He always took the helm and the other three surrounded him, protecting him. Black hair, blue eyes, and he never smiled. It was odd to think about. He never laughed. When he found a target, he’d get this weird look on his face that vaguely resembled a smile, but it never was.

Taking a large bite of my burger, I averted my gaze as Caleb looked right at me. The last thing I wanted to do was to catch their attention. Everyone knew what happened if you caught their attention.

The girls loved it. I’d heard the rumors of the boys tag-teaming girls and then discarding them. A couple had left the school as they spent way too much time sobbing about the fact they couldn’t win one of them over. They were Monsters and were more than happy to wear the label as well.

Out of some of the guys who wished to join them, a couple of them had never been seen or heard from again. To the outside world, this was a prestigious school. Wealthy kids came here. All of the Monsters came from money. They were all filthy rich, but no one here was from the squeaky-clean kind of group. Nope.

My parents dealt in sordid deals and blackmail. They owned an entire city, and I’d even caught conversations about trafficking. There had been a lot of young women coming in and out of their house. Most of them covered in bruises.

I hated it.

There was nothing I could do about it. This school was the one place where I could breathe without worrying someone was watching. Of course, they were watching. Even the jocks, they came from backgrounds that had a double-edged sword.

I grew up surrounded by competition and the enemy.

Slurping up my banana milkshake, I jumped, nearly choking on the straw at the sound of a loud clattering.

Near the Monsters’ table stood a kid I didn’t recognize. He was clearly a year, or several years, below us.

River got to his feet and the tension in the room mounted. Silence fell.

“Please, no, please.” The boy’s whimpering filled the air.

The biggest mistake he could make.

In hell, no one ever showed weakness. We were all monsters, all destined for lives we didn’t want. At the top of the tree stood the four Monsters, and we were nothing but their minions. I hated it.

River slammed the kid to the table. The blade pressed against the boy’s throat.

“You think it’s funny to throw a spitball?” River asked.

See? All of this over a wayward spitball that had come at the beginning of the school day.

Nibbling on my lip, I watched as the boy held his hands up in surrender. He was in the wrong place and was about to become target number one in a sea of sharks. I’d seen enough as River landed the first blow. As if on cue, Caleb, Gael, and Vadik got to their feet, and away they went. Anyone who dared to step up would feel his wrath.
