You’re twenty-three, a grown man. You don’t care anymore how others judge you,” Caspian told himself, staring at the newest Instagram photo of a bodybuilder he followed. The bastard had two women hanging off his flexed arms, as if he were a tree, and he’d surely eaten Caspian’s daily calorie allowance for breakfast. Since everyone went low-carb nowadays, his diet was likely based on nuts—one of the many mundane things that could kill Caspian.

It seemed to come so easily to this guy, as if he actually enjoyed several hours of exercise per day and never got bored of grilled chicken. Perhaps Caspian was looking for excuses. Nobody had blocked his way into the college gym, but the shame of revealing his frail arms and legs to anyone there terrified him to the point where he never used their facilities despite paying for the membership each year.

He’d tried calisthenics and workouts utilizing everyday objects, but neither did anything for him, and after attempting a ‘healthy’ diet several times, even the scent of protein powder gave him nausea. Still, those were excuses.

So maybe he’d never grow taller than five-foot-three, but he could most definitely gain muscle mass, and exceed the hundred and twelve pounds he’d been stuck at since graduating from high school. If he was lucky, maybe he’d escape the purgatory called undateable while he was at it. Despite the dislike for his physique, Caspian could see he wasn’t ugly. He did have a good enough face, with plump lips that could have been considered sexy, and if he gained weight, his large blue eyes would make him look attractive rather than childlike.

Tonight, he would stop holding himself back. He’d just obtained his bachelor’s degree, chosen a specialization, and returned home to work at Dad’s firm. And since he considered this the start of a new life, he was determined to make a change. To no longer be the nerdy kid who tried to fit in by means of self-deprecating humor. So he motivated himself with more photos from the same Instagram account and stepped into the dark parking lot, facing the sprawling gym across the street.

As soon as he spotted the bulky men in tank tops chatting in front of the entrance, his instincts screamed for him to hide in the vehicle. They told him that he could use his mom’s kettlebells for at-home weight training. That he could eat two extra chicken breasts a day instead of putting himself through this grinder.

But what he needed wasn’t a workout video on YouTube. Only real engagement, advice, and the motivation of being watched during exercise could change things. Maybe, just maybe, he’d even meet someone with boyfriend potential, but that wasn’t his priority. No. This was Caspian staking his claim. Battling for ground in uncharted territory. Molding himself into the man he was meant to be.

Fortune favors the bold.

“Excuse me,” he mumbled once he stood behind the man blocking his way into the gym.

Nothing.

“Excuse me,” he repeated to no avail. “Excuse me?” Caspian tut-tutted in frustration and dared to tap the man in front of him on the arm.

The human tank turned his bald head in surprise. “Didn’t see you there.”

“That’s okay.” Caspian lifted his eyebrows expectantly and glanced from the guy’s square face to the door.

It was only then that the living mountain stepped away from his two friends, creating a corridor for Caspian. Mumbling his thanks, Caspian walked in, assaulted by the bright lights revealing every detail of his small form. He always dressed in layers to create the illusion of more bulk on his upper body, but the LEDs were merciless and surely cast shadows on his narrow cheeks, making him look as if he were starving himself.

He didn’t like it here. Unlike the sleek gyms in the city where he studied, this one seemed… unwashed, for lack of a better word. Like the kind of guy who maintained the very basics of hygiene but sported oily hair and wore the same clothes three days in a row. Ugly graffiti covered the walls in the exercise space, and the floor had cracks no one had bothered to repair. Worst of all, it smelled—of sweat, cheap male deodorant, and dust. Hint of mold maybe? But what was he to expect of Grit, Ohio?

The woman at the reception desk gave him a wide smile, which was more professional than he’d expected from this dump. But he still hated having to interact with her in a place where men like the three at the entrance passed through the door every single day. She might not see how bony Caspian was through his clothes, but there was no hiding the fact that she was taller than him.

Caspian endured a brief introduction, signed papers, paid, and accepted a key before hiding in the locker room. Relief made him exhale when he realized the small interior with light blue tiles on both the floor and walls was empty, even if a bit grimy. At least the faint scent of disinfectant promised he wouldn’t be getting athlete's foot. Hopefully.
Two enemies cursed to feel each other’s pain.
Zane. “I will burn your life to the ground.”
Roach. “I’m a cockroach. I’ll survive.”
Two years ago, the Rabid Hyenas MC ripped Zane apart like a pack of starving wolves. But he’s not only a survivor, he took revenge that same night. Turns out, one of the bikers is still alive, and as long as that’s the case, Zane will not know peace. Especially since Roach is the dirtbag who caused all the mayhem in the first place.
When an act of revenge meant to close that chapter of Zane’s life takes a shocking turn, all hell breaks loose.
Roach’s pain is his. When Roach bleeds, he does. When Zane suffers, Roach screams.
So until Zane can figure out how to lift the curse and kill Roach, he’s stuck caring for the dumbass who drinks too much, works like a dog, and hasn’t moved on an inch since he lost his motorcycle club. But Roach has other plans for the man twisting his miserable life around. For him, Zane is hope, lust, and love combined, so Roach will gladly stay bound to him forever.
Even if it kills them.
Dirty, dark, and delicious, “Feel My Pain” is a gritty M/M dark romance novel with magical elements and a happy ending. Prepare for violence, intense jealousy, and scorching hot, emotional, explicit scenes.
****POSSIBLE SPOILERS: ****Themes: Enemies to lovers, forced proximity, magical bond, revenge, poverty, disability, small town, vulnerability, versatile lovers ****Length: ~110,000 words (Standalone novel) ****WARNING: This story contains scenes of violence, offensive language and morally ambiguous characters as well as sensitive topics of child abuse, addiction, and suicide

Books by Author:

K.A. Merikan

Chapter 1 - Roach

“Just fucking die already!” Hulk pinned the elephant-sized cockroach with his boot, and once he leaned all two hundred and sixty pounds of his steroid-pumped mass on that one leg, the bug disintegrated with a bone-shaking crunch.

He raised his hand as if he were expecting a high-five, but Roach felt as dead as the insect under his dad’s boot.

“Maybe if you hadn’t left a body in a freezer that isn’t working, we wouldn’t have to deal with an infestation.”

Hulk shoved at Roach’s chest with his massive paw. His biceps were so out of proportion he could have played a 90s comic book villain. “Look at this fucking smartass,” he said to Ajax, Roach’s brother and Dad’s chief yes-man. “Like I hadn’t told him to bury this sad sack of shit last week.”

Roach gritted his teeth and engaged in a staring contest with Hulk because arguing was pointless. His dad’s brain had steroid-induced holes, and trying to prove he’d never told Roach about the body was a fool’s game. Now that the stench became too strong to miss for anyone entering the cellar, Hulk was looking for a scapegoat and Roach had no doubt he'd be it.

Ajax scowled at another fat insect zooming over the grimy floor. “Just do your fucking job, Roach. It’s not that hard. You know where to go.”

“Doesn’t have the balls to do it.”

Even Roach’s temper had its limits. “I’ve been taking out your trash for five years now, so shut the fuck up. Considering how much time I spend removing corpses, I should be called Digger not Roach by now!”

Hulk squinted. At six-two, Roach was hardly a small guy, but his dad was a human bulldozer with veins bulging on his neck and arms like two pit bulls. He trapped Roach against the wall, as if he were about to torture captured vermin.

“What’d you say to me, boy? You’re lucky it’s just us family down here. I’d have smacked you down if any of the other guys heard you speak to me like that. Understood?”

“Yeah,” Roach choked out, catching Ajax smirking out of the corner of his eye. Right. Because fury focused on him meant Ajax got slack. Story of their fucking life.

Hulk stepped back once Roach’s stomach twisted so hard he was starting to feel nauseated. “Get rid of the body.”

“Now?”

Ajax rolled his eyes. “Not now, obviously. It’s Saturday, there’s a party upstairs. Dirty work’s gonna have to wait.”

Roach spread his arms in frustration. “So until Monday we’re gonna have a corpse here and a cellar crawling with maggots?”

“You should hardly mind.” Hulk snorted and patted the cockroaches tattooed on Roach’s arm as if they hadn’t almost come to blows seconds ago.

Roach flinched, hating the familiar touch much more than he did the punches.

Ajax put his arm over Roach’s shoulders and pulled him toward the dingy old stairs, smelling as if someone had broken a bottle of Old Spice in an attempt to smash his skull in. “Come on, I’m so done with this bullshit.”

Roach was too. He couldn’t wait to be out of the stinky tight quarters where he’d been stuck with two bears swiping their clawed paws at him for no reason.

The heavy thud of rock and roll upstairs was relief, because the louder it was, the less he’d have to listen to Ajax’s self-important bullshit. He sped up the narrow concrete stairs, itching to disappear into the crowd of visitors, and keep his distance from family for the rest of the evening. He didn’t like to be alone with either of them, so the air upstairs felt like pure oxygen to nourish his lungs, even if it was dense with smoke and liquor vapors.

With outsiders about, there wouldn’t be any more talk of dead bodies. Roach could just pick out a perfect stranger who’d been invited there by a local friend, and live his life as someone without baggage for a moment. Someone who didn’t have to dispose of poor fuckers who’d had the misfortune making an enemy of the Rabid Hyenas MC.

The band occupying the tiny stage in the back was a regular in the club bar, and while their show had less in common with music and more with the roar at a car factory occasionally disrupted by the vocalist wailing into the mic, they drew in locals. Fair enough. At the end of the day, all the performances at the open mic night were background noise for drinking and flirting. If someone treated music as an art, they’d better look for it somewhere else.

Sniffer shot Roach a tired glare from behind the giant snout that gave him his nickname. The poor guy could hold his drink so well he was unable to pretend the cacophony blaring from the speakers was anything but, and they both shared a silent eye roll. Next to him, Norm was equally silent as he nursed his beer, but as most days, he didn’t bother to acknowledge Roach in any way.
