“You will be my Dark Companion, sweetheart. I will always protect you.”

An honorable elven knight torn between duty and desire.

A human bookworm whose longing for true love may destroy him.

Nate

I’ve always dreamed of a grand love—the kind you read about at three a.m. when your heart aches and the world feels oppressive. I just never believed it would actually find me.

I’m a hopeless romantic. I fall for men who don’t stay. And the last time I trusted someone, it nearly got me killed.

Instead of dying, I was taken to the Nightmare Realm.

An elven knight pulled my soul from a dark river and offered me a my shadow in exchange for my life. I said yes, because I always do when a charming man chooses me.

Tristan is swoony, flirty, and oh-so-hot—as if every book boyfriend I’ve ever loved stepped out of the page to seduce me.

So, to hell with it, I follow him to a realm of endless darkness, monstrous beasts, and promises written in the stars.

Only then do I learn the I’m bound to another elf, one who only cares about my shadow.

Ancient laws don’t care about my shattered heart, but the deeper I fall into the Nightmare Realm—and into Tristan—the more impossible it becomes to ignore the way he looks at me. How he protects me. How he tempts me into believing I might actually matter to him.

Even if loving me could cost him every vow he’s ever sworn.

And if the Nightmare Realm doesn’t destroy me first, loving Tristan just might

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

Nate

Inever expected my life to end like this, but reality doesn't work like a novel, and things don’t happen at the correct plot beat. I won’t be saved by a dashing prince. There will be no sudden surge of magic in my soul, and I won’t avoid a bullet by ducking.

But I’m getting ahead of myself, so let’s rewind a few minutes.

The stench of feces and rot assaults my senses when I open the rusty lock at the back of the shed with a crowbar. I only switch on my flashlight once I’m indoors.

“Fuck me…… don’t they ever clean here?” Richie hisses, following my lead.

My throat throbs as anger boils over, but my focus is on the neglected puppies, whose eyes shine back at me like copper coins. When their poor mother was brought into the clinic where I work yesterday, I knew something was terribly wrong. That poor dog had been bred far too frequently, and while her owners had cleaned her up before arriving at their vet appointment, the signs of abuse were still obvious.

I was the one stewing in grief and fury after the vet gave her her final shot, while the owner left. I promised I’d make sure her babies would have a better life, and while she probably didn’t understand me, I meant every word.

I might not be able to stop those bastards from raising more puppies in befouled cages, but these dogs, at least, will have a better life.

“We got to be quick,” I whisper and kneel on the muddy floor, trying to work out how to open the cage.

Soft, wet muzzles touch my hand. Curious eyes look up at me from black faces with tan markings. The little rottweilers look around nine weeks old, but I can clearly feel the ribs of the first I pick up.

“Oh, you poor thing. It’ll only get better from now on,” I promise and reach back, placing it in one of my boyfriend’s duffel bags. I then carefully repeat it with each of the other dogs.

“I don’t think I’ll ever get rid of that smell,” Richie mumbles, before making a choking noise, as if he’s about to barf. “You’ll need to get me a new one after this.”

I laugh, but something inside me clocks this moment—yet another in a long list of disappointments. I believe Richie has a good heart, but he’s not very skilled at showing it. His parents are also very strict about cleanliness, so it only makes sense he’s squeamish about dog waste.

I wink at him. “Your birthday is coming.” I’ve already planned a little romantic getaway for us, but I could also gift him a new bag on top of that. After all, he wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for me.

He winces, and I don’t know what to make of it. “Next month, I guess— What was that?”

We both still at the sound of a door slamming outside, and I swear the night’s gotten a bit brighter. My heart starts pounding like mad. Breaking in anywhere isn’t my usual evening. I’m the kind of guy who feels guilty for parking incorrectly.

“Gav, did you hear that?” A voice farther outside yells.

“Let’s go,” Richie hisses and he’s already on the move while I frantically look around to check if we have all the puppies.

“Wait,” I whisper, because I swear I can hear whimpering in the darkest corner of the cage.

“No! You’re on your own. I told you I’m not getting arrested over this shit,” Richie says from outside, but I can’t even see the glow of his flashlight anymore. At least he took the duffel bag.

I get it. He’s stressed. Has many expectations placed on him.

But I still can’t believe he left.

“Who goes there?” roars an unfamiliar voice, sending a cold shudder down my spine. I’m about to dash out the open door when a faint whine calls me back to the cage. It appears empty, but some poor creature is clearly calling for my help. Breathless, I flip over a ratty blanket, and my heart stops at the sight of a tiny puppy curled up underneath. It must be the runt of its litter, but I’m not leaving it behind just because it’s slow and weak.

Within seconds, he’s tucked under my hoodie. I make a run for it, switching off my flashlight as I emerge into the moonlit night. The sky is cloudless, and the glow of the full moon illuminates my path between the barn and a pile of scrap. Without thinking, I dash toward the nearby creek, because once I cross it, the owners of this farm are less likely to pursue me. I’ve not heard barking, so I hope I’m not about to be mauled by a pack of rottweilers that don’t know any better.

Maybe the years spent on my college’s track team will save my ass, because more lights come on in the nearby farmhouse, and soon enough, I’ll be a sitting duck.
“Give me your shadow, and my body is yours.”

An elven prince shouldn’t be working at Best Burgers Bonanza. Yet here I am, banished to the human realm for a lifetime of toil and misery. I guess that’s what I get for being a traitor and the shortest elf at the Nocturne Court, with a shadow no darker than a tea stain.

I’m stuck with no scheme up my sleeve when destiny brings me face to face with the answer to all my troubles.

Hawk. A dangerous human on the run from prison, so tall my neck hurts when I meet his gaze. His shadow is dark as death and it will be mine if only I can force him to marry me.

What I don’t expect though is the price for his exquisite power.

He wants my body.

I’ve never been an object of anyone’s desire, but I will do whatever it takes to make him my Dark Companion.

When our illicit deal shatters the ice around my heart, keeping Hawk at arm's length becomes impossible.

Our bond is supposed to be one of convenience. He’s crude, violent, reckless, and wants to devour me in the filthiest ways. He’s everything I shouldn’t want.

I chose him to be my salvation, but he might just prove to be my downfall.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter 1

Hawk

Do sardines ever get canned with sardines that previously tried to shank them, so they’re stuck together for years, until the Grim Reaper opens the container and devours them both? I’ve been at death’s door five times, so I guess I’m long overdue a hot date with Hades.

Today, I am that unlucky sardine, and the guy who almost succeeded at killing me two months ago glares at me from across the van. The two guards escorting us to another prison sit close to the doors at the back, discussing something in low voices. Both Samson and I are cuffed to the floor by our ankles and wrists, too far away from anyone, including each other, to cause any damage.

I should resent being treated like some rabid beast, but let’s be honest, I deserve it. If my cuffs had any slack, I’d be wrapping the chain between them around Samson’s neck.

With no one here to make sure protocol is followed, the younger of the guards, a cute blond with a canine protruding from the line formed by his otherwise straight smile, turns on his cell phone and flashes his colleague something. They both grin.

“What is it? Redheads? Cumshots? Gay?” I ask, letting my gaze linger on the young guard’s eyes. I would do him in a heartbeat, even if he is a bit too muscular for my taste. But then again, nobody’s perfect.

A low grunt echoes between the truck’s steel walls, and the guard stuffs his cell down his pocket. The daylight sneaking through small barred windows offers me a flash of his horrified expression as he stutters, “No, that’s… my kid. Jesus Christ, Coleman, shut the hatch to that filthy mind of yours! I’m sure you can find a dick to suck in your new cell.”

Damn right I can. I’ve had enough going on in the face department to get down and dirty with pretty boys back in high school, and at thirty, I’d be even more of a catch if I hadn’t been unfairly incarcerated. Green eyes and tattoos can make a guy forget such minor details as a murder conviction. I’ve actually had several marriage proposals by mail.

Samson looks up with his bloodshot eyes. “Getting antsy? Not fucked anyone since your last hole sold you out?”

I don’t know why he’s baiting me, because neither one of us can reach the other. We’re stuck like two eunuchs at an orgy.

“I don’t come and tell,” I tell him in a steady voice, because the reality is that between suffering from an infection and barely recovering from this bastard turning my stomach into a pin cushion, I’m not in the mood for procuring blowjobs. At least while in hospital, I got the great news of being STD-free.

“You should be dead!” Samson snarls and spits at me, but his saliva pathetically falls next to my shoe.

I smirk. “With that kind of aim, no wonder you have no kids waiting for you out there.”

Samson lowers his voice. “Next time I’ll aim my knife for your fucking dick. If you survive that, at least you’ll get to live your shittiest life.”

One of the guards scowls at us. “Can you two shut it? You’ll both be in the can for life. Why make yourself even more miserable?”

I hold Samson’s gaze, until his blue eyes are my sole focus, his scarred jaw and the narrow nose that would have been so easy to break, only a blur. “Or maybe magic will save me again, and I’ll end up with an additional inch between my legs. Who knows?”
“I am yours, and I can be your prince as well as your beast.”

Luke

I’m your typical small-town loser stuck in a dead-end job. Single, because dating is for well-adjusted human beings, not traumatized gay boys with trust issues. All I want is to leave my past behind and finally start living.

My wish comes true in the most bizarre way imaginable. One evening, a beautiful man with pointy ears and flowing dark locks appears out of nowhere. He proclaims I am to be his ‘Dark Companion’ based on some stupid deal I made in a dream. Oh, and apparently he’s an elven prince, the Lord of Shadows, Protector of the Nightmare Realm and Knight of Grief Ocean.

Which is a weird way to ask me out, but okay.

It’s a hard no from me, but this absolute psycho abducts me to his palace in a moonlit realm populated by vicious beasts and backstabbing courtiers.

If I am to ever get back home, I need to adapt, because our full moon wedding is approaching fast. I can’t allow myself to buy into his seductive kisses, poet shirts made of spider silk and bouquets of sapphire roses. They hide poison and deception. A gilded cage is still a prison.

But…

What if I just never realized that what I need is a man with a cruel smile and a sword dipped in midnight? A man with secrets, and scars, and smoky eyes, and a past filled with darkness, and… have I mentioned he has a big d—

“Do they come with your number?”

This guy. This fucking guy. I may have accidentally swiped right on him on Grindr some time ago, and now he just won’t go away. He is handsome enough, if not in the age range I tend to go for, and wears a studded leather jacket that screams midlife crisis. The red sports car waiting for him in the parking lot completes a picture of someone who would rather hit on a guy half his age at Best Burgers Bonanza than deal with his issues in therapy.

“No,” I say, giving him a level glare, because I’m at work and hate it when people forget that I can’t just tell them to get lost.

He raises his hands. “Jesus! I was just kidding. I know you’re goth and all that, but it wouldn’t hurt you to smile.”

I don’t even blink. “My mother died yesterday. Lung cancer,” I add, because the yellowish tint on his fingers suggests he’s a smoker.

I love seeing his face fall and eyes widen as flustered panic colors his cheeks. He glances at the tip jar. Yes, fucker. Make it a big one, so I can actually afford a new car.

A car in which I can leave this town one day and never look back.

No more flipping burgers.

No more mediocre hookups with locals.

And no more stupid bosses.

“Luke? Can we have a chat?” My boss’s voice is like fingernails screeching over a blackboard. “Kurt, will you please finish serving this gentleman?” Marty asks my co-worker, who appears dead inside as he shuffles over to swap with me at the register. For Kurt’s sake, I hope the customer’s type is sad goth boys, not perky jocks.

“Sorry for your loss.” The customer chokes out as I walk off.

Best Burgers Bonanza, otherwise known as BBB, isn’t the worst fast food joint in town, but its years show in the peeling leather chairs and the paint that has long faded from a lively green to a washed-out mint.

Which unfortunately also happens to be the shade of my uniform consisting of a barfalicious polo shirt and shapeless black pants. I’m also obligated to wear a baseball cap with the BBB logo and that thing always makes my scalp itch. At least Marty lets me wear my combat boots and doesn’t make me take out my nose ring.

He speaks once we pass the kitchen and reach the corridor leading to the staff room. His gray hair bristles, in a stark contrast to the flushed face.
