They say the truth will set you free.
That’s a lie.
The truth got me locked in an ivory tower, a victim to my new husbands rage.
If I’m going to survive I’m going to have to make Enzo fall back in love with me.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

ALICIA

What am I supposed to do?

Where do I go from here?

Probably no more than an hour ago, I was about to kiss my husband for the first time. I was dazed and shaken, but I made it through the ceremony—what little ceremony there was. I knew what I had to do to make it out of this alive, even if I was sure the entire time that my supposed father was going to spill the beans and ruin everything.

He did, too. Just not in the way I imagined.

Now, here I am. Locked up again in the same room as when I first got here. The difference is I’m wearing a bloodstained wedding dress. And a band around my ring finger, a symbol of the mockery of a union I’m now a part of.

I’m waiting for my husband to decide what he’s going to do with me.

A heartbroken sob tears itself from my chest before I can fight it back. I don’t understand what happened. Like things weren’t bad enough as they were. Forced into the wedding, having to pretend those people were my parents. I’ve told so many lies and half-truths that I can’t keep track of any of it.

All I know now is that there is no lying my way out of this one. That Alvarez guy told Enzo I’m not who he thinks I am. He’s just as disgusting and cruel as the rest of them.

I thought Enzo was better than that. In fact, deep down, I know he is. I didn’t mean to blurt out my feelings for him, but they’re real. I love him. I was terrified for those brief moments when I didn’t know if he was hit by a bullet. The idea of being without him… Even now, it’s not something I want to imagine. Even though he’s locked me up again. Even when I know there is a high chance he will kill me.

The click of the lock makes my head snap up. My eyes are on the door. My heart starts to race, and a sickening wave of nausea ripples through me. This is it. I honestly didn’t think it would take this long for him to come up here and take his rage out on me. I hold my breath, ready to face my fate, but it isn’t Enzo who comes into the room. I blink, confused for a moment, when I realize it’s a guard instead.

He glares at me for a split second before leaving a tray of food on the floor. I don’t have time to take a breath and ask what’s happening before he closes the door again, clicking the lock into place.

“Please, somebody, talk to me!” I rush from the bed and knock on the door when what I want to do is pound my fists, but I know that won’t get me anywhere. The best thing I can do right now is play it cool. As cool as a person can play it in a situation like this.

I have to settle for picking up the tray covered in food we were supposed to be enjoying as part of our wedding dinner. Yet another symbol of what this day was supposed to be and what it eventually evolved into. It’s kind of cold now, the wine sauce coating the chicken somewhat congealed, but I have no idea the next time someone will think to feed me, so I doubt I should look a gift horse in the mouth. Even though I’m about as far away from hungry as I can remember ever being, I force myself through it, eating potatoes and sauteed vegetables without really tasting much of it.

If it wasn’t all so stressful, I might have to laugh. Could this entire situation be any further from what I would have imagined my wedding to be like one day? All my youthful illusions, gone at once. I’m sitting alone in a locked room with only a tiny window through which to see the outside world. My dress—one I didn’t get to choose for myself—is covered in blood and grass stains. I’m eating cold food from a tray, forcing myself to swallow every bite even though it tastes like sawdust. Waiting for my husband to barge in here and make good on his promise of killing me.

And all the while, my brain is churning. What am I supposed to do here? What should I say? I doubt he’ll believe anything I come up with, but I have to try, don’t I? I can’t roll over and die without at least trying to save myself.
Money. It’s the root of all evil and I need it bad.

You could call it the wrong place, wrong time.

To me the day I met Enzo was the day the old me died.

When he kidnaps me thinking I’m the daughter of his enemy the only thing I can do is pretend to be something I’m not.

But the more I pretend, the deeper I fall.

Enzo is dark, cruel, and menacing but he’s protective, fierce and determined.

Soon he wants to forge a contract between our families, making me his bride, but he has no idea I’m not who he thinks I am and when he finds out… well I know I’m as good as dead.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

ALICIA

“Please. All I need is a little more time. I promise I’ll be able to get the money together. It just won’t be right now.”

I’d love to say this is my first time inside this office, but it’s not. It isn’t even the tenth time. By now, my advisor and I are on a first-name basis. That makes it even more painful when he sighs and leans back in his chair after hearing my sob story for nearly the one-hundredth time.

“I’m sorry, Alicia.” He shrugs and tosses his pen on the desk. “But there’s nothing I can do.”

I hold up my folded hands. “John, come on. Please,” I beg. “You know what it’s been like for me.”

“I do because we go through this conversation every time I have to call you in for late tuition payments.”

It takes everything inside me not to grit my teeth and roll my eyes. Instead, I make nice because, at the end of the day, I need him. “They cut back my hours at the store,” I explain even though I know he doesn’t want to hear it. “I could try to get a second job, but then I won’t have any time to go to class.”

As it is, I barely sleep at night since I hardly have time to study otherwise. I’m practically killing myself to get through college, so I might as well try to pass my classes. Otherwise, what’s it all for?

Like always, he is sympathetic, but that’s about as far as it goes.

“I understand. I really do. Many of us are going through hardships. It’s just the fact of life right now.”

I shake my head in frustration. “That’s not even mentioning the fact that everything is more expensive now. Tuition has been raised. I don’t see how anybody can keep up with this, even people with families paying for them.”

He leans forward, folding his hands on a stack of folders. He’s a nice guy, a family man with photos of his kids lined up on his desk. I get the sense he doesn’t make much in his job—his clothes are always a little worn. And once, I passed a shoe store at the mall and could’ve sworn he was one of the guys helping customers locate a style in their size. But the store was pretty crowded, so I could have been wrong. Still, it wouldn’t shock me to find out he has a second job.

“You aren’t the only person going through tough times,” he explains in a quieter voice than the one he used before. “And I agree with you; it’s startling the way costs seem to rise every year. Inflation’s a bitch, too—pardon my language.”

Yes, that was one of the reasons they gave me at the store for cutting back hours. It costs more money to ship products to the stores across the country and more to produce them, so they have to save money where they can. That means people like me go bye-bye.

“I do everything I can to locate money for the students assigned to me.” He plops a hand on top of a thick stack of file folders. “Here are just some of the people who’ve passed through my door in the last week alone. Pretty soon, my kids are going to forget what I look like if I keep pulling the kind of hours I’ve been putting myself through.”

I feel sorry for him, but what am I supposed to say? “And are you able to help them?”

“Some. Others have used every last resource at their disposal, but it still isn’t enough.” He lowers his brow, gazing at me from over the top of his glasses. “Does that sound familiar?”

“Are you trying to guilt-trip me?”

“Of course not.” He looks at me like he can’t believe I would think such a thing. “I’m just saying there’s only so much that can be done. We’ve been here before, Ms. Gutierrez, and every time we’ve managed to pull something out of thin air. But a lot of these programs are tapped out now. The grants, all of it. You’re going to have to find a way to make up the difference yourself. I’m sorry, but the school has policies in place for a reason.”
But what am I supposed to do when he doesn’t tell me anything?

All the secrets. The whispers and conversations that end the moment I enter a room.

If I want to know something around here, this is the only way to make that happen. I lurk in the distance, listening in on every discussion. He says I’m not ready, that I’ll need to prove that I can handle what it means to be a Russo before he lets me in on things. Yet I’m months past my fourteenth birthday, and he still treats me like a kid.

I’m not a fucking kid, and one day, I will make sure he knows it.

“E sei sicuro che questa sia la strada che vuoi intraprendere?” And you’re sure this is the route you want to take? my father says while tugging his pants legs up and then sitting behind his desk.

I stand in the hall on the other side of the door, watching him through the slit between the wall and the hinges. It’s late, and most of the staff have retreated to their quarters. The lights are out except for what shines in from the moon and many lamp posts around the property.

From this angle, I can't see who is in my father’s office, but by the soft timbre of her voice, I know it’s a woman.

“Marco ha chiesto questo.” Marco asked for this. she says, and when she inches a little to the right, I can finally see who it is.

My father stares at her for a moment, contemplating her offer. I observe his features and can sense that he’s interested. I should be surprised, but Samuele Russo is a greedy man, and we’ve been at war with the Guilianis for as long as I can remember.

I didn’t catch the entirety of the conversation, just the end, and apparently, we’re joining forces. What does that mean for our families? Why isn’t Marco here to make this deal?

“Va bene. Ma chiariamo una cosa.” All right. But let’s get one thing clear. Samuele leans forward, resting his elbows on the desk and boring his sight into the woman.

She’s nervous if the stiff roll of her shoulders is any indication. Something is off about this, but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Why now, after all these years, is my father entertaining this?

“Non si torna indietro. Ottengo ogni centimetro di territorio. E prova ad attraversarmi, e farò in modo che ognuno di voi desideri non essere mai nato.” There’s no turning back. I get every inch of territory. And try to cross me, and I’ll make every last one of you wish you’d never been born.

“Finché manterrai la tua parte dell'accordo, non avremo nulla di cui preoccuparci.” As long as you keep your end of the deal, we won’t have anything to worry about.

“E la ragazza?” And the girl?

“Dipenderà da te.” That’ll be up to you. The woman grabs her person from the corner of the desk and slowly turns toward the door.

My father is up on his feet and rounding his desk a second later. “Piacere di fare affari con lei, signora Giuliani. Devo dire che questa offerta non poteva arrivare in un momento migliore.” Pleasure doing business with you, Mrs. Guiliani. I must say, this offer couldn’t have come at a better time.

She shrugs. “Meglio tardi che mai. Sono sicuro che il mio amato marito avrà molto da dire.” Better late than never. I’m sure my beloved husband will have a lot to say.

Samuele laughs, his thick bravado echoing through the hall. The two inch toward the exit, and I scurry away so as not to be seen. Curiosity stirs inside me, and I find myself needing to make sense of what’s going on.

Our families have hated each other for ages, yet Marco sent his wife here in the middle of the night. For what—a truce?

As they leave the office and head toward the front of the house, I hide around the corner, peeking around the wall until she’s gone. My father stands with his back against the floor-to-ceiling door and digs his phone from his pocket. After undoubtedly punching in the number to Carlo, his underboss, he brings the receiver to his ear.

“Carlo, riunite tutti. Dobbiamo parlare. Dopotutto, sembra che stiamo ottenendo lo scambio di Guiliani.” Carlo, gather everyone. We need to talk. It looks like we’re getting the Guiliani trade after all.

Something about the deal intrigued me. It’s been days since that woman left our estate, and I haven’t been able to get the whole ordeal out of my mind. I also knew that asking my father to fill me in would be pointless. Besides, that would let him know I was snooping.

Instead, I decided to figure out for myself what it’s all about. My father thinks I’m too young to understand, too naïve, but the truth is, I see and know more than he thinks. After years of watching in the distance, I can recite every plan of attack or pinpoint the flaws in the plans he’s too proud to admit he has.
A Dark Stalker Mafia Romance
The second our eyes connected I felt the shift in the air. The crackle of fire igniting between us. He was dark, dangerous, and secretive.
He came into my life like a storm, ripping apart everything I believed in, everything I thought I knew.
With his mischievous smirk, stunning looks, and alluring behavior I should’ve ran as far away from him as I could.
But I was stupid. I trapped myself in his web. I thought I was safe with him. Safe in his arms, safe from a past that refused to let go.
Turns out Christian Russo was the past I was running from, and my first mistake was ever thinking I could escape him.

Many are afraid of it and the things that lurk within.

But then again, many aren’t me.

I thrive on living in the shadows, the corruption, even the immortality of it all. I enjoy only two things more than the blackness: the fear I evoke in others and Siân Giuliani.

She’s the product of my obsession, and her fear feeds my soul the most. It’s a drug, an addiction I’ll never shake. So, you’ll understand why I watch her.

There she is, walking away from the campus with a friend in tow. She looks nothing like she did before, nothing like the first time I watched her. Her skin is still as smooth as silk and blemish-free, but she’s a shade darker now, her olive complexion a gift from the Florida sun.

Her hair is different, longer, and dyed back to her natural brown. I like her with darker hair. It suits her better than the blond she previously wore.

From where I sit, parked in a Ferrari that’s as black as my soul, I can see the shade of red that paints her lips, and I like that too. My dick twitches at the thought of her wrapping that pretty mouth around my shaft. It’s a never-ending fantasy, really, one that’s long past due to become a reality.

Usually, all I do is watch, but tonight, that changes.

Tonight, I’ll make good on the promise I made to her all those years ago and let her know I’m back.

She belongs to me, was promised to me as a boy, and meant to be my wife the moment she came of age. The first time I saw her face, we were kids. She was ten, and I was fourteen. The sweet, innocent girl who had no idea about the life she was fated to live.

The Russos and the Giulianis are two of Italy’s most ruthless families. We were born to hate each other, cursed by an age-old rivalry carried out by our fathers—a feud set to be squashed by the promise of an alliance. To put an end to the war between our families and strengthen their territories, Giuliani gifted me his only daughter with the promise of an heir. Together, we were supposed to reign over Italy, bringing the lifelong dispute to an end with our bond.

I knew then we were different. Unlike me, she was pure and oblivious to the world around her. I was raised to be my father’s son, exposed to blood, carnage, and murder early on. By my fifteenth birthday, I’d already taken a life, and by the age of seventeen, I discovered my need to observe.

Before we had a chance to meet, at least the way we were supposed to, she was ripped away from me. Marco reneged on our deal, denying me what was mine. My father is a greedy man, and he doesn’t take well to broken contracts. I learned another valuable lesson that night. Every alliance comes with secrets. And the skeletons buried beneath the pact our families made proved to be the worst of them all.

Marco never saw it coming, never smelled the deceit that brewed right under his nose. The saying goes, keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Well, what does one do when the friend is the enemy? Or when the woman you love sentences you to death and sells your daughter to the highest bidder?

He gave his last breath to save his precious daughter. For years, I searched until I found her—five years ago on her twentieth birthday. Far away from Italy in a small town in the northeast region of the United States is where I discovered her, protected and tucked away in one of the least likely of places.

For months, I surveyed her, and right when we were getting to know each other, my father called me home, dragging me away from her with his orders. Leaving was the last thing I wanted to do. After all, I’d spent time and many resources trying to find her. But if my father knew where I was and what I was doing, or that Siân Giuliani was indeed alive, shit would have turned south...quick.

I couldn’t have that. My father couldn’t know she was still alive because I led him to believe she perished in that fire with her family. I also get a thrill out of defying him every chance I get. She’s mine, and I’ll claim her on my own terms.

Yes, I could have taken her five years ago, and that was the initial plan, but where is the fun in ending the chase so soon? I like to hunt, to watch—and knowing I can turn her world upside down in the blink of an eye makes the wait all that more delicious. But she also mesmerized me, and the more I followed her, the more I learned about her. I quickly realized that to have her the way I wanted, I’d need to win her trust.
