Fate is just a made-up word used to give us hope or absolution. We find hope when we believe bad things happen to us for a reason. We find absolution when we feel as though the wrongs of our past were just fate’s twisted design to bring us to our present, and all of it was out of our hands.
Of course, I sort of change my mind after meeting Axle. The man with scars and haunted, cold eyes. The man who only warms when he is around me. The first man I believe won’t cost me my life. The first man I’ve ever believed to actually be honorable, despite the fact he’s a ruthless criminal.
Only the craziest of fates could have put us in the paths of each other. More of a collision course, really. Life gets complicated. Shit happens. And I sort of fall harder than I thought possible.
The first time we met, I was in my pajamas and cowering on the floorboard of his SUV, hiding from my very insane brother. Lovely first impression, I assure you. The second time we met, I was literally skating around a bunch of corpses, because I’m slightly crazy like that. Long story.
Obviously my second impression had just as much impact as my first. Because he fell head-over-heels in love with me in that instant. Kidding. That last part is complete bullshit. Axle is far more complicated than insta-love nonsense. Which is one of my favorite things about him.
Everything about us is perfectly complicated and wonderfully disastrous. It’s what every girl dreams of…as long as they’re as crazy as I am.
And I’m just crazy enough to hold on, because I don’t mind being the psycho chick in roller skates, who is flipping fate the bird when it tries to intervene again. It’s just one of my quirks. Turns out, I’m Axle’s brand of crazy too.
Life should be really freaking interesting. Or catastrophic. Or psychopathic. I guess it depends on how much madness you can embrace.
Girls have more bling down there than rappers have on their teeth nowadays,” Ezekiel says, grinning over at me. “What about you, Maya? Do you vajazzle?”

I roll my eyes, settling down on the comfy couch of the lounge, darting a gaze across the street where our parents are having their meeting. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I see them shifting around, my father smiling as he shakes the hand of Ezekiel’s father.

Kendra’s father is next, taking his turn to shake my father’s hand. It’s not the friendly handshakes that have my attention. It’s the tension in all their bodies. I can tell something is wrong.

“Maya?” Ezekiel prompts.

“You should take her silence as an admission of guilt,” Carlisle says, smirking over at me as I turn my attention back to the group.

Ingrid bursts out laughing as I give him a horrified expression. “How did you know?” I ask seriously.

Ezekiel and Carlisle both give me stunned, gaping looks, until I crack a grin and wink at them. “No, I don’t have bling on my vagina,” I finally tell them, rolling my eyes. “I barely make the time for a bikini wax because I get tired of probing fingers down there.”

“No probing fingers; just probing cocks then?” Kendra volleys, giggling.

“Exactly,” I deadpan.

As they all break out into laughter, I turn my attention back to the window. Only a street divides us. My parents are up three floors and across said street, but I can see them clearly through the glass from here.

Anyone in this building can. Not that they mind, since no one knows who they are. But I still don’t like seeing them so exposed.

Something feels wrong.

Or maybe I’m just living in a constant state of paranoia lately.

Something has felt wrong for a while.

“Where’s your boyfriend?” Kendra asks as she sips her cocktail.

“Thomas is in Manhattan with some of his old college friends tonight. I didn’t bother telling him where to find me, because he’s rather annoying when he’s drunk,” I answer with a smile to hide my annoyance.

I honestly have no idea where he is, but I’d rather not say that aloud. Our relationship is…unhealthy most days. Toxic on others.

“What about Lathan?” Ingrid asks me, her laughter tapering off. “Where’s he?”

Just as I see my mother sit down by my father, I once again look at my friends.

“My brother is absent. As always. He’s been an ass since Father made it official that I was the next in line for the Family. So I didn’t tell him where we’d be tonight.”

“He’s known that his entire life,” Ezekiel states dismissively. “Your father didn’t want the Family split in half, and Lathan is too hooked on drugs to be a leader.”

“I’m aware. But hearing it made official has sent him into a tailspin. More drugs than usual. More girls than usual. More everything and less attendance. I haven’t seen him in weeks.”

“So he’s icing everyone out,” Carlisle surmises.

“Not Father. He spoke to him today, but he only told him of the meeting he had to attend, and Lathan apparently hung up on him during the conversation. Father was trying to get him to go to rehab, and asked him to come by after he got back from the meeting. Didn’t go well.”

Ingrid blows out a breath, about to say something, when suddenly the building we’re in shakes hard. The floor rattles beneath us, as noise—just a steady, ear-splitting, undefinable noise—tries to deafen us.

Windows shatter, and Ezekiel tosses me to the ground, his heavy body coming down on top of mine. It’s all a blur of motion, nothing making sense.

Screams sound like distant echoes, and I manage to peer up as the building stops moving. My eyes go to the mostly shattered windows, and my heart leaps out of my chest.

I don’t know when I get up.

I don’t know when I start screaming.

I don’t know when I start fighting against Ezekiel’s hold, or when he even starts holding me back, preventing me from falling to my death in a quest to save my parents.

It’s like it all went black for a second, and suddenly I was at the broken windows, staring in disbelief at a room my parents couldn’t have escaped.

Ezekiel is still holding me back as I scream, trying to reach for the burning building across the street as the fire rushes from the room, chasing the outside air.

A second explosion triggers, and I’m launched backwards, the heat and pulse of it so strong against me that it knocks the breath from my lungs.

I blink, wondering when I got back on the ground, wobbling as I stand back up. Ezekiel is unconscious beside me, and Ingrid is slowly lifting herself off the floor, a cut on her head.

A ringing is constant in my ears, making everything else background noise. I see Carlisle’s lips moving as he comes to me, shaking my shoulders, but all I can do is stare past him and across the street at the destroyed top half of the building.

“Where? And for how long?” he asks around a yawn, his arm fastening tighter around my waist.

Pop still has a week left on a long ride. As a prospect, Rush isn’t allowed to go on the big rides with them yet, since he still has to earn his place. And part of earning that place is keeping the warehouse clean, guarded, and stocked in their absence.

Only a few others who aren’t really trusted yet are still here. However, there are so few, that Rush and I have been able to actually spend real time together without having to sneak around so hard.

My father would kill him, and my brother may decide to do the same. Never can tell with Drex. He’d either not care at all, or he might kill Rush just for the disrespectful approach. Depends on his mood.

My father would do it just to hurt me. No doubt about that.

Rush doesn’t think that though. He thinks we’re being overly cautious.

Because he thinks he’s one of them, and he’s not. He’s just too naïve to see it.

“I can get money out of the account, and we can go to Bali or something just as exotic and sexy,” I tell him as I drag a finger down his chest. “And we’d stay gone, using some more money I have stashed away for a rainy day.”

He tenses, and I try to distract him by dragging my hand down farther. He captures my wrist, halting my descent, and looks at me like I’m crazy.

“Why would we do that?” he asks seriously.

Because he doesn’t see.

And I don’t want to get him killed by opening my mouth too soon.

“If I bought two plane tickets tonight, would you go?” I ask him.

That story will be printed tonight, and by tomorrow, the cops will be coming to arrest Herrin. He won’t have a chance to get out of it. The paper has all the proof, even if my brother refuses to listen to me.

Drex’s head has been twisted, since Pop has actually doted on him all these years, grooming him to be the perfect protégé. Drex can’t step outside the bubble of lies long enough to examine the truth.

Maybe if I’d been doted on, I’d be just as fucking clueless, because I wouldn’t want to see. Just like he doesn’t.

He wouldn’t even hear the evidence, let alone see it. He doesn’t want to know, because that would mean he’d have to face the truth.

And life as he knows it would be blown all to hell.

Unlike me, he likes his life.

Just like Rush.

Just like them all.

Rush continues to hesitate, thinking over my question. “I’d rather we just stay here. I’ll eventually earn my cut, and we can ride with them. Your dad won’t mind us together once I’m really in the club.”

The smile on his face is just too honest. Even though he was tossed around and kicked out of home after home until Sledge took him in last year, he’s still too naïve about just how cruel people can be.

“If I said I wanted to leave it all behind and just go be normal, happy people, would you go with me?” I go on, needing him to agree so I can tell him everything and we can get out of here before Pop gets arrested in another state tomorrow night.

He runs his finger down my cheek, a confused smile on his lips.

“No. Because we’re not normal. We’ve both seen shit that prevents us from being like the Barbies and Kens out there. This is home, Kara. And it’s the first time I’ve ever really had a home.”

“Home is just a blanket word used to describe a sense of belonging, and we can belong anywhere we want to together,” I tell him with a soft smile. “Let’s just go far away from here.”

I start to lean up to kiss him, but he moves out from under me with angry, jerky movements.

“What the hell is going on with you?” he snaps as he stands and starts pulling on his jeans with his back to me.

Sitting up and keeping the sheet clutched to my chest, I take a shaky breath.

“Seriously,” he snaps, not looking at me as he dresses. “You’ve been acting weirder and weirder for months now.”

It’s like pulling off a strip of wax. It’ll take too long to slowly try to peel it back from the edges. It’s better to just rip it off.

“A few months ago, I discovered that Herrin killed my mom, and—”

He bursts out laughing, and my heart sinks as he turns around and looks me in the eyes with an incredulous expression.

“Your mom was a junkie. And—”

“My mom and Drex’s mom both died from a drug overdose, and you think that’s a coincidence?” I ask bitterly, tired of trying to coax him into this when he should be willing to go without hesitation if he really cares about me.
What’s the most selfless thing you’ve ever done? What price tag would you put on the ability to save the ones you love?
They say the worst decisions are made by the desperate or the fools. I was desperate enough to make a foolish decision to save my family. The cost? Me.
They may be a motorcycle club, but in all honesty they’re really an elite unit of criminals who just happen to drive motorcycles. They’re a business. An organization. A fully functioning army…
What I’ve learned? They work in the gray area; life and death is real; and everyone wants everyone dead. Okay, so maybe that’s dramatic… No. No it’s not. It’s legit.
I prepared for the worst, fully anticipating hating my new life. Turns out, I finally found out where I belonged. Oh, and I discovered I’m a little twisted or crazy. Maybe both.
Drex Caine, the man without a conscience, didn’t ruin me the way I thought he would. Instead, he made me feel like I was living instead of just waiting to live. And I can never go back to the way things used to be.
Please note: Book 1 does end on a cliffhanger, but book 2 has the conclusion and will be released March 28, 2016. After book 2, the rest of the series can be read as stand-alone novels without cliffhangers and will have different main characters featured.

He removes his hand and steps away, watching and waiting, and I swallow hard. The painful knot in my throat only grows as I reach for the hem of my shirt. Taking a deep breath, I pull it off quickly.

His eyes are on me, watching with open interest as I move to my jeans. As much as I’d like to draw this out and delay the inevitable, I also don’t want to keep dreading the first time. The sooner I’m naked, the sooner the suspense ends. I’ve prepared myself for what I hope is the worst.

“You know what’s going to happen to you, right?” he asks, crossing his arms over his chest as I push the jeans down my legs.

He takes a deep breath as I step out of them.

In nothing but my pink, cotton underwear, I try to find the courage to meet his gaze, keeping my expression as impassive as possible under the grim circumstances.

“I know.”

Chapter 2

EVE

Two Days Ago…

“So you came to me because you need money. For your family,” Benny says, stroking his beard as he eyes me. It’s not a question; he’s just laying the facts out there, summarizing.

Swallowing back my nerves, I chance a glance at Ben, my best friend since grade school. When he suggested asking his dad for help, I wasn’t planning on it being this intimidating. Then again, I should have.

Walking into the clubhouse for the Hell Breathers motorcycle club—one of the biggest around—should have reminded me how stupid this is. But desperate and stupid go hand in hand, it seems.

“Yes, sir. My dad left behind a huge—”

“The details aren’t necessary,” Benny interrupts, his creepy grin spreading as his eyes roam over me, appraising me in a way that leaves me feeling like I need a shower. “All that matters is that you know what will be expected of you. You’ll do anything asked. As a somewhat intelligent girl, I’m sure you can figure out the consequences if you try to change your mind.”

Some of the other bikers step up, smirking for the most part. Several lick their lips suggestively, warning me of what’s to come. This isn’t what I had in mind, and now I wish I’d worn a sweatshirt to hide me better, even though it’s hot as hell outside.

“Dad, you can’t—” Ben’s words are cut off when he’s slapped down to the ground.

It all happens so fast that the action doesn’t even have time to register in my mind until it’s over. I want to look down to see if he’s okay, but I’m too scared to take my eyes off Benny now.

“You know better,” Benny says, talking to his son, but keeping his eyes locked on me. “I don’t give away money for free. If Eve wants it, she’ll have to agree to the terms.”

A wave of nausea slams into me, making it impossible to stand here without turning pale, or maybe I’m turning puce. I should have expected this when he told me to bring proof of a clean bill of health, yet I was naïve enough to believe Ben’s father would see me as a child instead of a woman.

“Think about it, Eve,” Benny says, turning his back on me as he faces his menacing crew. “You have two days to decide what to do. If you say yes, remember how permanent it is. Once you’re in, you’re always in. If you say no, then... well, good luck.”

With that, he and his guys walk off, leaving me at the entryway with a bleeding Ben. He wipes his mouth with the back of his hand, regret and anger shading his eyes.

“I’m sorry, Eve. I didn’t know he’d do this. I swear I thought he’d just give you the money.”

My lips tighten into a thin line. I forgot a very important fact in life; you never get something for free.

The depths of depravity I would have to face isn’t worth it. Not with a man who I grew up knowing as my best friend’s father. It’s just sick.

“Come on. I’ll get you out of here,” Ben says apologetically. “We’ll figure something else out. I have a little money saved up. It’s nowhere near enough, but it might help you until you can get more.”

I have to figure something else out, because this is no longer an option.

Chapter 3

EVE

“Ben called to talk to you. Says he can’t reach you on your phone,” Mom says softly as she comes out of the twins’ room.

Moving past her, I peek in to see both of my five-year-old brothers sleeping peacefully in their separate beds. One more day before Benny The Sicko shuts the door on his disgusting offer. But I don’t know how else I can get that sort of money.
It makes me feel pretty fucking stupid, and it feels like the worst hangover in history, minus the fun of drinking.

I blink my eyes several times as the doctor finishes looking me over. He frowns down at my attire, which is just my jeans, since that’s all I bothered to put on when Drake showed up at my house. Glad I put on that damn much.

“You’re sure Eve is okay?” I ask Axle, who takes a deep breath that doesn’t make me feel too good.

“I made sure of it. Drake has her.”

The doc is on our payroll, and has been for a while. So he says nothing before backing out of the hospital room. Death Dealer cuts are everywhere outside the room. I catch glimpses when they open and shut the door.

Private rooms for concussions aren’t protocol for the hospital, but being off the radar from a cop is our protocol. So private room it is. Would hate to mess up our relationship with the local PD.

Obviously the head injury slows my thought process, because it takes a second for Axle’s words to register. When they sink in, I explode off the side of the bed and land on my feet.

“Why the hell does Drake have her?”

Axle comes quickly when I sway, feeling like a dizzy bastard from the head rush just standing up gave me.

“Easy, dumbass. You’re in here for a reason.”

“Why the fuck does Drake have her?” I repeat, ignoring his warning.

He tightens his lips and looks over his shoulder toward the door before returning his gaze to me.

“Your dad wanted us to bring her to him. He didn’t say why, but obviously I didn’t want that to happen while you were unconscious. Dash seems to think Herrin wants her dead, which also seems to be the general consensus amongst the rest of the group. The guys are blaming her for this, because the attack coincided with the phone call she made not too long before.”

My jaw clenches, and I shake my throbbing head, trying to keep my eyes open. It’s hard to do. I feel groggy as hell and things keep doubling, then singling, then doubling again. Fuck me.

“That’s the stupidest shit I’ve heard. That phone call was two weeks ago.”

“And we both know it takes a minute to organize a hit like that, so two weeks would be a good preparation period. She keeps amassing more and more coincidences. They’re starting to think you’re too close to her to notice the threat she poses.”

I crack my neck to the side while finally retaining my balance. I still feel heavy and off kilter, but I manage to stay vertical.

My stomach is being a bitch, because it takes all I have not to get sick. Damn concussion.

“You good?” Axle asks.

“No. Fuck no. I don’t want Drake around my girl. In case you don’t remember, he has a score to settle over a damn woman.”

Axle tightens his lips before blowing out a breath. “Dude, I hate to say this, but the girl keeps being the center of trouble. She shows up, and so do the cowboy feds who are bolder than any before. We also lose our contact inside the FBI because he’s sidelined. The ATF don’t want to waste their time on us, but a special task force from the FBI gets our scent and won’t go away? Then, there’s a raid on our place. Now this?”

He gestures around to the sterile room I’m in. I can’t help but laugh now.

“And you think Eve is in on it? That she has deliberately put herself in the line of fire?”

He stops and thinks for a minute, and something close to regret crosses his eyes. “I did. Until I saw the way she was hovering over you when I got there. She was on top of you, shielding you. She even looked like she might attack me if I tried to touch you. Drake had to pull her off you to get her to budge. Then she didn’t want to leave your side. Dash even took a nut-shot because he interfered. It’s why I let Drake run off with her, because I knew he’d keep her safe.”

Yeah, maybe some pride swells up with hearing how she handled things. But before I can ask where Drake took her, the door to my room opens. Pop walks in with Sledge, Snake, Dash, and Hershel.

I immediately notice Dash limping, and I can’t help but smirk. But my amusement fades fast when Pop speaks.

“Drake isn’t answering his phone,” Pop says, glaring over at Axle. “Why the hell did you send her with him?”

Axle shrugs, not acting affected by Pop’s glower. “Drex seemed to be more important than his old lady. We had to torch the house and get him out of there. For all we knew, his brain could have been bleeding or some shit. I wasn’t willing to risk fighting over her when time was wasting.”
