“Because you love me no matter how much you hate me.”
Seven years ago, Cole Flores was betrayed by the man he loved, and his very soul was left charred. He vowed that day that he would find Ned O’Leary and kill him, even if it was the last thing he did.
But Ned disappeared, and life went on.
Despite the flame of hate burning deep inside him, Cole’s hope to find Ned had dimmed. At least it left behind a lesson to never trust, never love, and never attach himself anywhere. That was the only way for a wanted man to stay off the noose in a world filled with liars and cheats.
Just when Cole stops looking for Ned though, he finds the deceptive bastard, and life turns on its head again. Their reunion goes nothing as planned, and unanswered questions rise to the surface, poisoning Cole’s mind with lust and longing that have never gone away.
Ned O’Leary is a traitor. Ned O’Leary is a scumbag. Ned O’Leary is everything Cole Flores craves.
Torn between love and revenge, lust and sanity, Cole has to find out if the bruised and battered heart of an outlaw can ever trust again, or if he’s bound to fulfill his promise and be Ned O’Leary’s doom.
Dark, dangerous, yet desperately romantic, “The Man Who Hated Ned O’Leary” is a gritty western M/M romance novel and book 2 in the “Dig Two Graves” duology.
Beaver Springs, Colorado

“Oh come on, Cole! Don’t be such a killjoy, and take the picture,” Lars urged, climbing the wooden sculpture of a beaver in the middle of town.

“I already took one of you yesterday.”

“But just look at this thing!” Lars laughed and positioned himself with one foot on the figure’s shoulder and the other on its head, as if he were the conqueror of Beaver Springs.

A photograph of Lars and the unsightly beaver would make for an amusing memory, which was the most Cole could ask for in this godforsaken town. Lars stood proudly, posing with a shotgun resting against his shoulder, and the long pheasant feather adorning his hat trembled in the cool spring breeze. It was a chilly March day, so he wore his embroidered sheepskin jacket, which made him look even dandier than usual. Cole wished he could capture the ice-blue of the smug bastard’s eyes, but unlike paintings, his box camera showed the world in shapes and shadows of gray.

Two middle-aged ladies strolled by, their mouths crooked into horseshoes, as if they’d both had lemons for breakfast, but Cole ignored them and raised the camera, taking in Lars’s tall, handsome form. But while one of the women chose to let it go, the other stopped and raised her voice.

“Young men nowadays. They have no respect for anything.”

Cole exhaled and took the photo before glancing her way. “Apologies, m’am.”

“He apologizes,” she hissed, shaking her head. “All empty words!”

Lars laughed, climbing down from the sculpture with the grace of a wild cat. “I am so terribly sorry,” he said and took off his hat to make his point more dramatic. His accent must have already piqued the women’s interest, but the shock of bright blond hair drew attention to him just as much. “In my home country of Norway, beavers are sacred animals. There’s even legends about an old god with a beaver tail and teeth. When I saw this magnificent creature, I had to make sure to keep its likeness for posterity,” he said and smiled widely, revealing his massive teeth with too-long fangs. Cole had counted them more than once, because he was sure there had to be more in Lars’s jaw than it was natural, but each time the conclusion brought him the same results. He was a man like any other. Only larger than life.

In every sense.

Lars had been five when he’d left Norway, but while Cole had found out many things about the man’s family and heritage during their two-year long partnership, he was positive that the beaver god story was yet another instance of Lars talking ballyhoo.

He did it to get out of trouble, to draw people’s attention, and to charm his way into men’s pants. And he was damned effective at it.

The two women stared at him, flabbergasted.

“Oh… how very interesting,” the brave one said, adjusting her pink hat.

Cole bit his lip to keep from laughing and put the camera back into the satchel designed to keep the device safe. He’d traveled with Lars for long enough to know the man wasn’t more trustworthy than any other fellow, but their arrangement would continue for as long as it was convenient. It gave Cole the comfort of knowing exactly where he stood. He’d enjoy the easy conversation, Lars’s body, and the money from bounties collected together for as long as the good times lasted. He and Lars made a good team, even if their beginnings had been far from pretty.

A bounty hunter by profession, Lars had tracked Cole down, captured him in a moment of drunkenness, and before Cole knew it, there was a pistol aimed at the middle of his forehead. As unfortunate as he’d felt at the time, he managed to convince Lars that his presence was worth way more than the money on his head, and they’d been working together ever since.

It worked out between them in bed too, which, Cole didn’t doubt for a second, had prompted Lars’s decision to not turn him in after all. But bygones were bygones. Their sort-of relationship would have been more satisfying if Lars were to open his legs for a fucking now and again, but it would be foolish to attempt to find everything in one man. As long as Lars kept his mouth shut about what he thought of Cole indulging in men’s backsides, they were good.

Green River Valley, Colorado

The buzz of flies became more intense with every step of Ned’s horse, but it was the stench that alerted him to the presence of vultures before he could even hear their grunts and hisses. The cool morning air hadn’t given him a chill before, but now shivers crawled up his back like dozens of spiders with legs of ice.

His mount made a couple more steps down the road, and from behind dense pines emerged the brown bulk of a stagecoach. Tipped to its side like a drunkard after one too many, with one wheel laying several feet away, it presented a sorry sight, but Ned clenched his jaw when he didn’t see any dead horses. It meant the vultures were here for something else, and he could only hope they were feasting on a dead mountain lion.

No such luck.

He sped up with his heart rising in his throat despite his whole body telling him to turn away, because the stench combined with the intensifying buzz spoke of death. He pulled his bandana over his nose and rode toward the carnage.

A man’s legs emerged from behind the vehicle, but with three vultures dipping their naked heads over his torso, Ned couldn’t see much of the poor bastard. The brown wall of the stage had been torn by bullets and in the middle of the road lay luggage—scattered and torn open as if someone had been hastily looking through each and every piece.

Above Ned, the trees hummed, bringing fresh air, but the stench of death was impossible to ignore when he spotted two more bodies offering the vultures a free meal. With his blood cold, he got off his horse, hoping at least that these people had been newcomers, not anyone he knew.

“Shoo!” he yelled at the birds and swung at them with his shotgun. Whoever had done this would be far away by now, but it still unnerved him that bandits lurked so close to his home.

The vultures grunted at him, but knew their place in the pecking order and reluctantly flew a few feet away to await the rest of their meal. Their massive wings sent a gust of dirt and flies Ned’s way in an act of defiance, but all the hairs on Ned’s body bristled when the man they’d been congregating around raised a trembling hand and moaned.

Ned dropped to his knees by the stranger’s side, but the elderly man’s face had already been pecked at, and his eye sockets were minced meat sprinkled with insects. The birds had torn his clothes and nipped at the tender flesh between his legs too. This poor man couldn’t survive, yet Ned grabbed his hand tight, trying to communicate to the stranger that he wasn’t alone.

The shotgun burned Ned’s hand, because unless someone showed the old-timer mercy, he might suffer for hours, but Ned couldn’t find it in him to let go of the thin, bony fingers while naked gums that barely held any teeth moved in a plea for help.

Ned sweated under his shirt, powerless in the face of such impossible choices, but the fast thump of hooves had him looking up in time to spot a rider who approached at top speed. He tensed and let go of the man’s hand to grip the shotgun, but his shoulders fell when he recognized the sheriff.

“Mother, have mercy…” Gordon Pattison muttered, slowing down when he realized what happened. Ned might have been covering his face, but his mount, golden with white markings on its rear, would have been easy for the sheriff to recognize from afar.

“Looks like it happened hours ago,” Ned said, but flinched in surprise when the old man in the dirt found the strength to reach for Ned again, blindly grabbing his suspender. The button attaching the strap to the front of Ned’s pants snapped under the pressure, but before he could have said another word of comfort, Sheriff Pattison retrieved his gun and shot the suffering man dead.

The rocky hills of the valley carried the sharp sound of death, but as stiff as the smell of gunpowder made Ned, the lawman had done something he’d been too squeamish to do, even in the face of such needless suffering.

“Poor souls,” Pattison said, resting his hands on his hips as he took in the carnage. With a round face and a bit of a pot belly hanging above his belt, he didn’t appear dangerous, but the Beaver Springs sheriff had escorted many an outlaw to the end of a hemp rope and had proved himself brave in the war. For him, the life he’d just taken was only one of hundreds. He was a man of action while Ned was evidently still scared of pulling the trigger on anything that could talk back to him.
