Mary Persephone Hail. Mary—well-wished-for child. Persephone—destruction.
Hail—well that speaks for itself. Her name is painful to think about. Mary, his newfound daughter, isn’t a wished-for child.
Persephone, though? Yeah, destruction is a fitting description. And Hail? Yeah, that’s just the final f-you.
The moment that her mother drops her off on his doorstep, Dante’s hell becomes complete. Or so he thinks.
What can make life worse after losing one’s wife and kids, you ask? Here’s what: being given a baby that depends on him for her survival.
Finding out that the baby’s mother is dying of brain cancer, and has a husband that he never knew about. A husband that Dante knows in the marrow of his bones is trying to kill her just as surely as the cancer eating her brain.
Dante’s a bad person. He’s done some not so nice things, and now he’s being punished for his misdeeds. Karma is finally catching up to him.
This child that he’s been stuck with is of his flesh and bone. This child is his salvation. This child is the final nail in the coffin of his wife and daughters’ too short lives.
He doesn’t want this child. But this child will save him whether he wants her to or not.
With the help of a friend—yes, a woman friend—Dante finds his way back to life. But what he finds when he gets back isn’t the same life that he left behind. Turns out, he has to start living a new one. One where he's suddenly having feelings for a friend that helped him get through some tough times, and loving a daughter that won’t let him quit.

-Dante’s not-so-secret thoughts

Dante

Dante, honey. You need to just relax. Nothing will ever happen to us.

I woke with a start and bile creeping up the back of my throat.

I screamed.

The tiny cabin was empty except for my bed, so my anguished cries echoed off the empty walls.

This cabin… Lily and I had bought it as our retreat. Our home away from home. The place we would go when we needed time alone, away from the daily grind. Time to be together, just the two of us, with no interruptions, not even phone calls.

Dante, this place is perfect. Let’s get it.

I made a noise akin to a wounded animal in the back of my throat and gritted my teeth.

I will not cry today. I will not cry today.

I’m a grown man! Grown men don’t cry!

Everything, and I do mean everything, hurt.

I’d drunk myself into oblivion the night before, and I was feeling the after effects now.

I moaned as I rolled out of bed and walked stiffly to the bathroom.

My foot hit the corner of the door, and I cursed.

Dante, don’t cuss in front of the girls. What are you going to do when they get in trouble at school for swearing when they fall down?

I ran to the toilet and threw up.

Today wasn’t going to be a good day.

And, as if God, the life giver and the life taker, was listening, I felt a piece of hair tickling my chest.

I reached into my shirt and pinched what I thought was the hair, and pulled.

The hair…it was long. So long that I knew without a shadow of a doubt whose it would be.

The moment that it was exposed to the harsh, bright light of the bathroom, I bent over the toilet and threw up the last of the whiskey that I’d drank a few hours before.

I moaned and let my head rest against the lid of the toilet seat, turning it so that I could examine the strand of hair.

Even after all this time…after she’d been dead for so long…I still found her hair in my clothes.

Everywhere.

In my shirts, on my jackets. On my pillowcases.

God, she hadn’t even stayed the night at this place, and her hair was on my sheets.

Sheets that I hadn’t washed once since the last time she’d put them on the bed in anticipation of having a little alone time at our cabin.

I reached up blindly and flushed the toilet with the hand that wasn’t clutching my dead wife’s strand of hair, then sat back until I was on my butt.

Obviously, today wasn’t going to be the day that I got my act together.

Hell, that day might never come.

I love you, Dante.

Prologue II

A million men can tell a woman that she’s beautiful, but the only time she will listen is when it comes from the man she loves.

-Fact of Life

Marianne

“Dante!”

“Don’t talk, just feel me,” he growled as he slid his shaft into me in long, full strokes.

I couldn’t talk. I couldn’t do anything but feel.

I don’t know why he was telling me to just feel. Just feeling was all I could do whether I wanted to or not.

“I love you, Lily,” Dante growled. “God, you’ve never felt so good.”

I froze and then immediately started to shake as tears rolled down my face. “I-I’m not Lily. I’m Marianne, remember?”

The look of shock in his eyes as they met mine proved to me that he didn’t.

Goddammit.

Chapter 1

I can walk the walk, but please don’t ask me to jog the jog or run the run.

-Meme sent to Dante from Baylor

Marianne

The only time a goodbye is painful is when you know, for certain, that it’s the last one.

I’d read those words in a magazine when I’d been nine months pregnant with my baby.

I had no idea that, within weeks of having her, I’d be saying goodbye. And I knew in my heart I’d never say hello again. It hurt.

I swallowed the lump in my throat.

It was, by far, the hardest thing I’d ever had to do.

I looked back at the little girl in the car seat, my reason for still being alive.

Oh God, did it hurt.

It hurt so bad that I wasn’t sure if I could draw my next breath.

A sound had me turning to the man that was standing on his doorstep.

I’d only just found out where he lived. It’d taken me four precious days to find him. Four days that I didn’t have to give.

Why couldn’t he be where he was supposed to be? Instead, he was living here, in this Godforsaken place.

Though, I did have to admit that when we’d been intimate, we’d done so at my old place. I hadn’t exactly known that he wasn’t living at the place across the street.

I got out of the car, walked around to the back door, and opened it.
Get out! He yelled those words at the love of his life twelve years ago, and to this day, Reed Hail regrets them. He’s always been the type of person to speak before he thinks, and apologies have never come easy.
It’s been over a decade since she was his, and he stubbornly thinks that he can keep on living without her. He couldn’t be more wrong.
The last thing he needs is her vagina anywhere near his exam table. But nobody ever asks him what he wants. Maybe he should’ve gone into the auto-recovery business after all.
I hate you. Krisney Shaw would take those words back in a heartbeat if she could. In fact, she would take back everything.
Never meeting him would be the perfect place to start. The memory of Reed Hail haunts her—morning, noon, and night. Then, to add insult to injury, she has to see him being happy while she’s breaking a little more inside every single day.
Reed Hail is her worst nightmare because she’s constantly reminded of exactly what she’s missing—the other half of her soul. Just when she thinks things can’t get worse, she sees his sexy, bearded face over the top of her paper gown, and she’s lost all over again.
Don’t ever let me go. Both Reed and Krisney are determined to avoid each other. They do a great job of it, too…not. One ill-timed gynecological exam changes everything. One single second in time shows Reed what he’s missing—literally and figuratively—and suddenly he’s back at square one.
The only problem with being back at square one? He won’t be able to leave her a second time. Especially since the first time around he didn’t have a child with her to consider.

-Krisney every single day of her life

Krisney

I closed my eyes, prayed that he’d leave, and started counting.

One.

He ran his fingers through my hair.

They were sticky.

Two.

I smelled something that was unmistakable. There was no other thing that it could be, and my stomach rolled as the sticky substance was dragged onto my face.

Three.

I would’ve shuddered, but then that would’ve let him know that I was awake, and that wouldn’t end up well for me.

An eternity later, I got to one hundred, and cried when he walked out the door.

Sometimes it was like that.

There were days when he’d just come and sit, watching me squirm.

Well, at least that’s what it felt like.

I had a feeling he didn’t know that he woke me every time he walked into my room.

There was this sort of sixth sense that I started to have when this all started.

I couldn’t begin to tell you how long it’d been going on.

A while.

I couldn’t remember exactly how long, really.

I had no clue that the next day my life would totally change or that I’d fall head over heels in love with a Hail.

It was only twelve hours later when I met the boy that would change my life.

Though, it’d be another two years before I realized what he meant to me.

Two minutes after that second meeting to make me fall in love with him.

And thirty seconds after that to know that I couldn’t live without him.

Chapter 1

What if I have a child that’s allergic to dogs and I have to get rid of the child?

-Reed to his mother

Reed

The first time I saw her, I nearly fell out of my truck.

I remembered it like it was yesterday.

She was wearing a pale lavender top, short—and when I say short, I mean that if she bent over I'd see her underwear—khaki shorts. A pair of simple black flip flops from Old Navy—the ones that are a dollar on sale every other week—and she had her hair up in a ponytail with the length of the ponytail braided down to her bra strap.

Her long, strawberry blonde hair seemed to shimmer and shine under the street lamp, and I wanted to touch it. Wrap my fingers around the length and bring it up to my nose to smell.

We met because her best friend and my friend wanted to meet. Each of us had tagged along, neither of us realizing that we were about to have our lives changed forever.

“Come on,” Drake said. “It’s time to go.”

I rolled my eyes and walked with my friend out to my truck. And it was my truck, because if it was his, I knew that I wouldn’t get a say so in what time we left.

What if this girl was his soulmate? I didn’t want to have to stay out there until dawn. I wanted to be able to go home at a normal time, because I had a baseball game the next day.

Thinking about how much this was going to suck, I drove slowly, uncaring whether Drake was bitching in the seat next to me.

“Could you drive any slower?” Drake, aka Dilbert as I liked to call him, groaned.

“I can’t get another ticket,” I told him honestly. “I was barely able to pay for the last one. If I get another, I have to go to teen court to get it dismissed and that would fucking blow, because then they’d make me do community service. Then I wouldn’t be able to practice with the elite team on Saturday, and then…”

“I got it,” Drake muttered under his breath.

I grinned.

Drake hated hearing about my practices…mostly because he wasn’t as good as me and couldn’t keep up with me at all.

That wasn’t vanity talking, either.

I played on two club teams. One for baseball, and one for soccer. Lucky enough for me, they split the seasons. Fall and spring it was baseball. Winter and summer, soccer.

When I wasn’t playing games for one, I was practicing for another.

At one point, Drake had been on the baseball team with me, but he quit shortly after his father and mother caught him trying to juice himself—or shoot himself up with steroids—to keep up with me.

Which had upset me, too.

Now we were just friends, and I made it a point to chill and relax with him, since I think the whole reason he tried was because we’d been the best of friends during our younger years, but had grown apart as we got older.

“Okay, she’s going to have her friend there, so if we disappear for a little while, you have to take one for the team.”

I snorted, knowing where he was going with that.

He wanted me to keep the proverbial fat chick entertained while he went for his own entertainment.

“Sure, Drake.” I snorted. “I’ll do that for you.”

He’s wanted her since he repossessed her car and made her cry. Baylor Hail knew two things. One, he hated crying females. Two, it was even worse when he was the one to make that female cry.
He never meant to do anything but his job, but when one thing leads to another, suddenly all he can think about is the broken woman whose car he towed. She’s wanted him since he patted her back and told her it was okay to cry even though she knew he was lying. Nothing ever goes right for Lark.
Not when she got married. Not when she tried to leave her abusive husband, and not when she arrived in a new town with a fresh, clean slate. That clean slate came courtesy of a secret organization that specializes in helping abused women find a way out. They set her up with a whole new life. It just turns out that it happened to be right smack dab in the middle of another woman’s old one.
That woman also happens to be down on her luck, something that Lark learns the hard way when on her first day there, her car is towed by a handsome stranger. It’s been two years since she’s felt any kind of sexual attraction toward a man, and she reacts badly. We’re talking full-on, hysterical breakdown as he loads her car onto his tow truck while looking at her like she’s lost it.
Maybe being crazy isn’t all that bad. The next thing she knows, she’s spending time with the sexy stranger and life couldn’t be better—even though she still doesn’t have a car.
She thinks she’s in the clear, that she’s got it all figured out… well, that is until her ex-husband finds her again. Now the ball is in her sexy stranger’s court as he decides whether or not her kind of crazy is worth getting killed over. Turns out, for Baylor Hail, maybe it is.
It hates that.

-Things not to say to a woman

Lark

“We’re going to send you to Hostel, Texas,” the big man in front of me named Sam, said. “We don’t normally send two birds to the same place just in case, but we have one who’s just left there, and all her old contacts are still in place, so it works out, plus we have allies there that’ll watch over you. Do you have any questions?”

I looked at the packet of information he’d given me.

A new ID. A stack of bills that established my new ‘identity.’ A thousand dollars in cash. Everything someone might need to start all over.

“I’ll have a job?” I looked up.

He nodded, the scar on his face pulling with the movement. “You will. All the stuff that’s there right now of the old bird’s will become yours. Her car. Her house. Her things. You won’t be her, but you’ll be using all of her stuff. Our contact there at the grocery store will advance you a paycheck so you’ll have money to pay those bills. Got it?”

Then I blurted out what was on my mind. “Why Lark?”

The big man grinned. “Lark is a bird name. You’re one of our birds now. Really, the name is more of a category so we can keep facts straight on our end. You’re currently Lark, III.”

I grinned at that, then tried to calm myself.

“Uncle Sam, did you make sure to catch up on the car payments for her loan?”

My eyes flicked to the beautiful woman that was sitting at a desk in the corner of the room. She was furiously writing on something, her hand periodically going to a piece of paper that she’d flip over to the small stack that was steadily increasing in height on the corner of her desktop.

“Shit,” Sam grunted. “Yeah, I’ll do that. The car that you have hasn’t had its note paid yet. I think the old bird was a month behind because of some doctor bills that she’d accrued while she was there. I’ll make it current, though, and we’ll make sure you start fresh.”

I nodded.

“Okay,” I whispered.

I was so tired of being scared. Would I be scared once I got to this new town, Hostel?

I sure hoped not.

Chapter 2

Not sure if I attract crazy, or I make them crazy.

-Baylor’s secret thoughts

Baylor

I grunted as I pulled the last of the chains off the truck.

Today was normally my day off, but since we were short staffed—like always—I came in anyway.

Now I had to deal with this bullshit.

“Listen,” the woman whose car I was repossessing pleaded. “If you take the car, I have no way to get to work.”

I looked over at her, then dropped down to my knees and started to crawl under the car to attach the chains.

They weren’t needed, not with today’s technology and advances in towing, but I was old school. I liked them on there because it made me feel better. So sue me.

That’s when I felt something on my foot.

I looked down at the woman—girl really. What was she, all of twenty-two?

“Don’t touch me,” I ordered, looking over to see her hand on my ankle.

I hated being touched by people I didn’t know. Fuck, that was why I hadn’t had sex in over eight years.

I was seriously on the verge of kicking out with my foot when she let go and then fell to her ass in defeat.

“Perfect,” she whispered.

That’s when the tears started to drip out of her eyes.

Fuck!

I hated when women cried. Especially young, pretty ones.

Shit, fuck, damn.

I attached the chain and scooted out from under the car, not bothering to dust the dirt and grass off my back. This wasn’t the first time I had been on the ground today, and it wouldn’t be the last. That much I knew for sure.

“Where are you taking it?”

“Yard.”

Since I was repossessing it, I’d be towing the vehicle to our impound yard.

Though, not all of my pick-ups were repossessions.

Sometimes they were wrecks, or the car was broken down. Then I either took them to a mechanic or a body shop.

And most of my pickups didn’t come with crying women. The majority of them came with little to no trouble at all, but if there was trouble, I preferred it in the form of a man swinging his fist at my face instead of tears. Especially tears of a woman.

But that’s just me.

I lived for the adrenaline spikes that this job offered me.

“Come on, darlin’.” I held out my hand. “I’ll take you where you need to go.”

She looked around the parking lot—the mall parking lot—and swallowed.

She didn’t take my hand.

“That’s okay,” she whispered. “I’ll walk. I’ve done it before, and I’ll do it again.”

That was my very first encounter with Lark Lawrence, but it wouldn’t be the last.
One look at the sixteen-year-old, prim and proper town goody-two-shoes, Hennessy Hanes, and Tate Casey knows he’s in trouble. He knows he should stay away from the preacher’s daughter, but there’s something about her he’s drawn to, and he can’t resist the pull.
The more he gets to know her, the more he realizes that something isn’t right. He may not be able put his finger on what it is, but he’s determined to find out what’s going on with the girl with the haunted eyes.
Tate didn’t anticipate that someone else would be just as determined to keep Hennessy’s nightmare a secret, and he never realizes just how far that person is willing go to keep those skeletons in the closet until it’s too late.
With the very real threat of jail time hanging over his head, Tate leaves without a backwards glance at the town or the girl. The problem is that out-of-sight doesn’t necessarily mean out of mind, and it’s Tate who’s now haunted by his decision and memories of Hennessy.
Hennessy Hanes knows better than anyone not everything is always as it appears to be. After years of being on the receiving end of her squeaky-clean preacher father’s abuse, she seizes an opportunity to leave it all behind and runs.
Her only regret is that in walking away she loses any chance with the one person who tried to save her.

Chapter 1

Is it bad to need a beer the moment you walk out of jail? Asking for a friend.

-Tate’s secret thoughts

Tate

“I flipped on my blinker and looked left before I took the final turn that would lead me to my house. When I was fully on my street, I saw what looked like ten or so males gathered around something on the ground in a clearing right off the road.”

I cleared my throat.

The woman’s intense stare was almost emasculating.

I continued. “That clearing belongs to Dr. Foreman. Or did— I don’t know if it does anymore or not since I haven’t been here…” she waved me off. “Anyway, there isn’t usually anyone in that field, so it made me pay attention. And that’s when I saw the silvery blonde hair on the ground.”

Something switched in my brain.

My past and present collided, and there wasn’t a single thing that could stop me.

Not anymore.

“And can you tell me what happened next?”

I shook my head.

“No,” I said. “I blacked out.”

The woman, the one that was currently making my dick hard, dropped her eyes to her papers that were sitting in her lap, and started writing once again.

Her slim, breakable wrist—that would take nothing for me to wrap my fingers around—moved as she wrote furiously. The delicate charm bracelet that she was wearing jingled each time she moved lower on the paper.

“When you say you blacked out, can you describe it to me?”

I shrugged. “Not really. One second I was aware of what was going on, and the next, nothing.”

She looked up at me, pursing her lips.

Jesus Christ.

She was wearing ruby red lipstick.

I’d never seen anyone in this town wear red lipstick.

Hell, hardly anyone looked good in that shit, but this woman? She really pulled it off.

She had white skin so fine that it looked like a fucking doll’s, and her black hair was such a stark contrast with her skin that it kept drawing my eyes to where they met.

Right along the line of her collarbone.

She had the majority of her hair up in some complicated bun looking thing, but there was this one rebellious curl that had escaped the confines and was brushing along her collarbone.

“When do you remember ‘coming to yourself’?” she questioned.

She was looking at me over the rim of her cat-eyed purple reading glasses with four rhinestones on each side, waiting for the answer to her question.

If there was one thing I did not want to do, it was talk to this woman about my ‘anger issues.’

I didn’t have ‘anger issues.’ I had issues that weren’t solely based on my anger.

I was one fucked up individual.

I’d been in the Marines for nearly half my life. My sister had been brutally raped, beaten, and then tried to kill herself four times after. I’d been in an on again, off again, relationship with someone since the beginning of time, and it was almost as if it was expected at this point. But, to be honest, I didn’t find her nearly as attractive as I did when I was younger. Yet, she was easy. What we had was easy.

Convenient.

Then there were my parents. My mom was a hooker, and my father was nowhere to be found.

So yeah, I had fucking issues, and anger wasn’t the only reason for them.

Being fucked up was the reason.

It just so happened that the judge that had let me off early for my ‘good behavior’ had mandated that I see a psychologist that could help me work with those ‘issues.’

“I remember everything from the moment that the first cop shot me in the chest with a fucking sandbag.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“Language like that is not needed to tell this story, Mr. Casey.”

Goddamn, but she sounded like a haughty librarian that was chastising me for talking too loud in the library.

She dressed like one, that was for sure.

She was wearing a black blouse that was buttoned up from the top of her collarbone all the way into the high waisted, skin tight, black skirt. A skirt that came down to her knees.

She was wearing what looked to be stockings, too, but I could neither confirm nor deny that.

Not without actually checking, anyway.

“Sorry, Ms. Hanes,” I apologized, trying to make it sound genuine.

Apparently, I didn’t accomplish it, because she shuffled the papers she was writing on and uncrossed those goddamn legs.

She placed both high-heeled feet on the floor and stood up to her full height, which was all of five foot four, at most.

The heels she was wearing, however, made her height lengthen to about five seven, if I had to guess.

“That’s forty-five minutes,” she said, looking at her watch. “Thursday when you come in, we’ll start where you left off, all right?”

I shrugged and stood, too.

Then I walked toward the door without a backwards glance.

Chapter 2

I’ve never really been the type of girl that wanted a sugar daddy. Now, if queso daddies were a real thing, I’d for sure need one of those.
Everybody has problems. But Travis? Yeah, he has so many problems that he finds it hard to breathe sometimes. He spends five years catering to his ex-wife’s every want and need—all to make it possible to continue to see his child.
He isn’t supposed to fall in love with a woman, but he does. He isn’t supposed to find someone that is willing to put up with his ex-wife’s crazy antics, but he has.
He isn’t supposed to be happy, but he is. And all it takes is his ex-wife finding out about his new-found peace for things to change.
Hannah saw him and knew he was the one. All it took was one look into that haunted man’s eyes, and she was lost, never to be found again. She thinks she has it all. His love, a new baby made with that love, and a house to raise their blended family. She’s wrong, and Travis’ ex-wife is out to prove it.
Travis doesn’t deserve Hannah. All he’s done is hurt her. She’s done everything in her power to keep everyone happy, but the more she tries, the harder his ex-wife pushes. Until one day, there’s nothing left to push.
Hannah leaves, and Allegra wins. But Travis isn’t willing to let her have her way any longer. He fights back, and only gets a bullet to the chest to show for it.

-Fact of Life

Travis

I watched her cross the room, and I liked what I saw.

My breath caught in my throat, and my heart started to pound.

That was unusual.

Normally, I tried to stay away from women.

They were trouble.

Big fucking trouble.

Trouble that I didn’t have time to deal with right then.

“… she’s one of my good friends who is here to help ascertain if any of these ladies are in need of medical attention. Hannah, this is Travis Hail. Do you…”

Her name. He’d said her name. What was her name?

He’d said something more, but I couldn’t fucking breathe.

This close, she was goddamn mesmerizing.

We stared into each other’s eyes long enough to acknowledge that there was something there, but moments later a pained cry from a woman across the room had Hannah whirling around like she’d been called directly by name.

Then she was gone, and I watched her work.

Watched while she did her job, and made sure that every person that she was helping had the best possible care she could give.

Then, as if in a daze, she disappeared once everything was said and done.

And I was left wondering who the hell the girl was that had made my heart sing.

Chapter 1

I want to be a nice person, but everyone is just so stupid.

-Travis’ secret thoughts

Travis

I looked around the house, wondering how this had become my life.

Seven years ago, everything was okay.

Seven years ago, I was living the dream.

I had my own business that my brother and I had purchased with help from my father. Dante was my partner. We opened a club together. I had a wife and kid.

And now…nothing.

My wife was no more. I had a kid that hated me because her mother poisoned everything that came out of her mouth.

And, now there was Dante who was so far in the deep end, head barely above water, that I wasn’t sure whether he was going to sink or swim.

I was short a few drivers at our business, working fourteen-hour days at minimum. I needed at least three more workers and about ten more hours in the day to cover the workload that Dante had left behind.

And then there was Hannah…and my son, Travis Junior, also known as TJ.

“Anything?”

I looked over to find my other brother, Reed, standing in the doorway.

“He’s gone,” I said, sounding as tired as I felt. “Either he took my advice to heart, or he got out of here before I could give him any more of my recommendations.”

Reed grunted something.

“You need to give him time.”

I looked over to find my other brother, Baylor, standing there. He had a white piece of paper in his hands, and he was holding it out to me.

“I’ve given him time, Baylor,” I told him, taking the paper. “We’ve all given him time. Hell, I know he needs more time, but I can’t do this on my own. I know y’all are helping, and it’s nice. But he’s co-owner of this business with me. I can’t do anything without his consent. It’s the law…”

I trailed off as I got the first look at the paper he’d handed me, and the moment I saw it, my heart sank to around my knees.

“No.”

The word was pulled from the deepest part of my belly, and so angry and upset that it was a wonder that the walls of Dante’s house didn’t crumble around me.

“You need to give him time,” Baylor repeated.

I looked up at the huge floor to ceiling fireplace. It was gorgeous. Made of rough cut stone, it was something that I remembered Dante and his dead wife building to this day.

It’d been something to see, because his wife could barely even lift up the rocks as she handed them to him.

In the center of that fireplace was a photograph of Dante’s family. His wife. His two kids. Him.

They all looked so fuckin’ happy.

There was no way for them to know that a mere week after taking that picture, they would all die in a car crash caused by our very own sister.

That Dante would have to listen to his wife and two kids scream in panic until the line went dead and the car fully submerged while he sat in the tow truck next to me, alive and well.

“Tobias found the woman.”

We all knew the woman that Reed was talking about. The woman was a woman that Dante had slept with. Once he’d done the deed, he’d said words, she’d packed up, and he’d gone back to the falling apart man that we were left with after his wife and kids were killed. Only, he hadn’t realized that he left a little piece of himself behind in the woman.

“Well, maybe that’ll be the lifeboat in this sinking ship of a life we have,” Baylor murmured. Then, the words we weren’t meant to hear, came. “But I doubt it.”
Evander Lennox doesn’t do anything he doesn’t want to do. At least, that is, until he’s sent to prison. The four years he's incarcerated, he’s had no choice but to do the things he's asked to do, when he’s asked to do them. And now, if he doesn’t, it will mean a one-way ticket straight back to hell.
Once he’s free, it takes him twenty-four hours to get his old job back, his dog at home where he belongs, and an understanding that people aren’t as forgiving as he once thought them to be. He’s just about given up hope of ever integrating back into society when a woman slams into his heart, literally and figuratively.
Kennedy Swallow just wants to belong somewhere. When she was younger, her parents divorced, and chose to separate her from her twin. Fast forward fifteen years, and she’s finally getting to meet the family she’s always wanted to be a part of. To make that happen, she uproots her life and moves to the tiny town of Hostel, Texas—giving her almost everything she’s ever wanted.
Just when she thinks she’s making progress in winning her family over, she finds out that her twin is ill, and the only reason her family tolerates her is due to the convenience of having a free caretaker whenever they might be in need of one.
After a few eye-opening experiences, she quickly realizes that she’s being used. Vowing to herself that she’ll make the best of the situation, she begins to steel her heart. What she doesn’t prepare for is a man named Evander who sees that barrier as a challenge.
It takes Evander all of ten seconds while watching the woman on the floor, bleeding from her jaw, to realize that maybe life isn’t as bad as it could be. This woman with her thrill for life, a crazy obsession with chickens, and a desire to be wanted, changes everything he thinks he knows.
But it doesn’t take long for him to realize that just by being around her, the people of the town have judged her guilty by association. Her business suffers, and soon after, she realizes what it will mean to have him by her side—the loss of everything she’s worked so hard for. Kennedy knows that Evander is worth it. Evander, however, decides that he’s not letting another person get hurt because he was stupid enough to care.

Evander

“Evander Lennox?”

I stood up, hating the way my knees creaked and popped.

I’d been in the military for seven years, then had worked for Hail for five more. It took spending four years in the pen, though, for me to start feeling fucking old.

I guess getting jumped in the dark would do that to a person.

“Hurry up, I don’t have all day.”

I gritted my teeth, but kept my pace deliberately slow.

Fuck him.

The parole officer, my parole officer, sent me a glare the moment I got to him.

“I don’t need your bad attitude. I have your file in my office and I’ve spent the morning going over it. There won’t be any ‘accidents’ while you’re under my supervision, got it?”

The accidents he was referring to weren’t accidents. I’d never said they were accidents.

In fact, I made sure to tell the guards exactly what had happened each time I’d had to use my hands to defend myself.

I was just lucky that the guards liked me and lied when they went to write their reports.

“Yes, Sir,” I found myself choking out.

I wanted to call this man ‘Sir’ about as much as I wanted to take a shit in a plastic bag and carry it around in my pocket.

Thirty minutes later, I was leaving his office with a slew of rules that I now had to follow, as well as some regulations I wasn’t aware that would be required of me when I’d started the day.

Needless to say, as I made my way home—walking, might I add—I wasn’t in a good mood.

Not at fucking all.

***

I ripped the sheet off of the couch, and coughed when a cloud of dust filled the still, stagnant air around me.

“Fuck,” I gasped, waving my hand in front of my face to clear the air.

It didn’t work, but at least I’d given it the good old college try.

No one had been in here since I’d gone to prison. Not my friends. Not my dad—not that he even knew I’d gone to prison since I hadn’t seen him in years, and that was before I’d done time. Not even my sister had bothered to come in here and clean up. Though, that didn’t surprise me much. Every single one of my family members were selfish. I doubted cleaning my place up for me had even crossed their mind.

Yet, had they been there, it wouldn’t have mattered. When I walked onto my property less than twenty minutes ago, I’d found not just overgrown weeds, but also trash. Junk. Old fucking tires.

It was as if my entire front yard was being used as the city dump while I was gone, and not one single person had done a damn thing to stop it.

Angry all over again, the next five minutes entailed me ripping sheets off of furniture and opening the windows in order to let the stale air out and the crisp, early October air in.

I threw the last of the sheets that were covering my furniture outside the door, and left the screen door propped open, allowing much needed air to permeate the room behind me.

“You need any help?”

I looked up to find Travis, the co-owner of Hail Auto Recovery, standing at my doorstep.

“Not really,” I admitted. “I’m here now. That was the hard part.”

It was.

I’d expected my sister to pick me up, but she never showed.

Not that that really surprised me, either.

My sister, yet again, was a selfish person. If it didn’t benefit her in some way, she wouldn’t do it.

“You didn’t have a ride?”

I shrugged. “No.”

“Why didn’t you call me?” he asked.

I looked over at him.

“I called Dante. Didn’t answer,” I informed him. “I took that as the universal sign to fuck off.”

He laughed humorlessly under his breath. “There’s a lot of shit going down with Dante,” he admitted. “And I’ll tell you about it when there’s a lot of whiskey to share. Until then, I brought you the keys to the truck.”

My brows went up.

“Isn’t it company policy not to hire men who’ve had a record?”

He looked at me like he wanted to smack me.

I shrugged. “Just sayin’.”

He sighed.

“We both know you were dealt a bad hand,” he said, tossing me a set of keys. “If you need any help, don’t hesitate to ask. Use the truck. Don’t use the truck. I don’t fuckin’ care. Just make sure you log personal and business miles so we can keep a record of them, okay?”

I nodded mutely, suddenly finding it hard to breathe.

They trusted me. They believed in me.

They’d been there the day I went down, and Travis was there the day I got out.

You find out who your friends are.

“Thank you,” I said. “Do you…”

I hesitated, and he filled in the blanks.

“Do I know what happened to the horses?”
