Is she a witch or a healer?

Lord Varrick is the Legendary Highlander who has well-earned the myth centered around him. He is known for his endless victories in battle, his fearless skill as a warrior, and his soulless nature. He rules over a heavily forested area in the north and rumors spread that he commands an army of the dead and that no one passes through his land without his permission, or they chance battling his ethereal warriors. Truth or tale? No one knows and no one takes the chance of finding out.
Fia is a healer from a long line of healers. She is eager to learn all she can so she can help the ill, though more importantly prevent illness if possible. Her grandmother warned her to be careful that there were those who would misjudge her and threaten her life. A fair warning indeed, for she has met such a fate and is now in the hands of the legendary Highlander. But not the way she thought she would be… she is forced to wed him.
Lord Varrick refuses to tell her what he wants with her, and she fears that once he has what he wants her fate will be sealed, and he will see her dead, ending their marriage and being rid of her. How to prevent such a fate is the challenge she faces. He does not hold her prisoner but has warned her of the consequences if she should run from him and it is not something she wishes to chance.

Note: While this trilogy does not need to be read in sequence, each book a standalone, Fia and other characters from Highland Myth Trilogy were first introduced in Highland Secrets A Cree & Dawn Novel… a prelude of sorts to their individual stories.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

WAKE! HE IS HERE!

Fia jolted up out of sleep, eyes wide and heart pounding, the deep, commanding voice continuing to echo in her ears. She pulled her wool cloak tightly around her, not that it did much good against the cold that penetrated the dungeon’s stone walls where she was held prisoner—though not for much longer.

He had arrived to take possession of her and there was nothing she could do to stop it. There had been nothing she could do when captured weeks ago, imprisoned, and accused of being a witch. Her twenty-odd years had taught her that ignorance was a difficult foe to battle.

She was no witch. She was a healer from a long line of healers. She had inherited the skill of her ancestors and their passion to learn, to prefect their craft, to help the ill, and… like some before her, possess the knowing. She would sense things to come and a voice in her head often guided her. Both had benefited her, kept her safe, had even helped her as a healer. Other times it had nearly gotten her killed. She tried to make sense of it and find a way to control it, but it wasn’t possible. It had a will of its own, so she had learned to live with it the best way she could, and, at times, she had learned to hide it.

She shivered, a long, drawn-out shiver, and it was not only the cold that brought it on, but fear. She had sensed, not long after her arrival here, that a man would come for her and demand to take possession of her. Unfortunately, she did not know why. She only knew that fate had sent him, but fate could be a friend or foe and only time would tell which one it was meant to be.

Fia stood, stretching the stiffness and aches from her limbs. Her sleeping palette was nothing more than a thin layer of hay with a sparse wool blanket spread over it. She often wrapped the blanket around her cloak for extra warmth. Still, she had never felt warm enough since arriving here.

Her stomach grumbled, reminding her of her hunger. Tavia, the daughter of Chieftain Newlin of Clan Strathearn, made sure she had sufficient food, as did Flora, the chieftain’s niece. But an arranged marriage had Tavia recently leaving with her husband. A hastily arranged marriage had taken Flora away as well.

Cora, one of the cooks in the kitchen, had tried her best to bring her food but Chieftain Newlin made it difficult for her. He believed Fia a witch and feared what she might inflict on him and the clan, making it difficult for Cora to sneak her sufficient food.

She would forgo the food right now for a bucket of water so she might clean herself before meeting her fate. The stench in her cell had her wrinkling her nose and she worried that some of it was coming from her, having had no chance to wash since her capture.

Fia stilled, catching a sound. It was the door at the top of the stairs creaking open. Light footfalls followed cautiously and Fia hurried to the iron bars on the cell door.

“Cora?” Fia called out softly.

“Aye, it is me,” Cora acknowledged just as softly, fearful someone would hear.

Fia was glad to see the short, round woman, though the worry on her face had Fia asking, “What’s wrong, Cora?”

“He has arrived,” Cora said and hugged herself protectively. “He has the finest features I have ever seen on a man and yet he is the most frightening man I have ever seen. His warriors do not move without a command from him. And one look from his,” —she shivered— “I have never seen the color of his eyes before, a blue so bold it captures you and you cannot look away. One look, not a word from him, and his warriors obey without hesitation. Thankfully, he did not bring his army of the dead with him.” She shivered again. “Chieftain Newlin trembles in his presence, most do. I have heard the legends spread about him. Spawned from the mist of battle one day the tale goes, but they seemed more fanciful than true.” Her eyes went wide. “Now, though, seeing him with my own eyes, I believe the tales are true and I cannot wait for him to take his leave.”

Cora’s words sent a shudder through Fia. She would go from one prison to another, forced to leave with him.

“I am so sorry,” Cora rushed to say. “I wish you could be set free. I do not believe you are a witch, though I cannot say that to others. They would believe you cast a spell on me and have me do your bidding.” She hurried a wrapped cloth through the space in the bars. “I managed to sneak some bread, though you might be better meeting him on an empty stomach.”
Some say the Isle of Outerson was once part of the mainland when one day the hands of a giant tore it free and set it adrift where it settled in a large loch. According to the myth the giant continues to reside there protecting the isle and the clan who inhabits it, the fierce Clan Norham. There is one problem though, the giant haunts the keep.

Lord Torin is the present-day lord, and he needs a wife. He isn’t particularly interested in marriage, but he has a duty to his clan. He wants a wife who is pleasing to the eye, obeys his word, and holds her tongue. He will not abide a chatty wife. So, when he accidentally comes across Flora of Clan Strathearn, who barely utters a word, he believes he has found the perfect wife and proposes a marriage arrangement that is quickly accepted.

Flora cannot believe that she barely arrives at her uncle’s home in the Highlands when he weds her to a complete stranger. She had never wanted to come to the Highlands but with her parents’ death she had no choice. She also had little to say, literally, since an illness had robbed of all but a whispery voice that was continuing to heal. Normally, she loved to converse, to challenge opinions, to gain knowledge as her scholarly father had taught her. How she would ever survive the Highlands, let alone her marriage she did not know.

Then, of course, there is the ghost which Flora believes does not exist and sets out to prove it.

Obstacles abound, challenges faced, and when Flora is given a chance to leave the isle and dissolve the marriage, does she take it? Or will Torin finally admit he loves her and refuse to let her go? Or will the ghost decide their fate?

Note: While this trilogy does not need to be read in sequence, each book a standalone, Tavia and other characters from Highland Myth Trilogy were first introduced in Highland Secrets A Cree & Dawn Novel… a prelude of sorts to their individual stories.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER 1

Flora felt the gloom of the cloudy day. It lay as heavily on her as the snow on the towering pine trees. Her glance went to the line of warriors plodding along in front of her atop their horses. They weaved a path through the heavily forested area, their heads up, their eyes watchful, and their weapons close at hand.

She tucked her cloak tighter against the cold and the pervasive gloom and stretched her body up on the saddle to see if she could spot her husband.

Husband.

Not seeing him, she relaxed back down on the horse. How was it she had a husband? She shook her head. It had all happened so quickly that she was still trying to comprehend it. She had not been long at her uncle’s home, Chieftain Newlin of Clan Strathearn, when she found herself forced into a marriage. Their departure had been rushed after her husband received a message, the contents which he had not shared, that had them departing immediately.

Another look and she spotted her husband riding toward her… Lord Torin of Clan Norham. He was far from difficult to glance upon, his features quite appealing and it seemed most women thought that way since when they came upon women at crofts they stopped at or travelers they came upon, there was not a woman who could take her eyes off him. Of course, his smile that seemed to tempt and tease in one look helped it along. He was also lean and muscled and had the most intense dark eyes she had ever seen. They teased and tempted just as much as his smile, and his dark hair that fell carelessly to his shoulders only added to his undeniable appeal.

Fine featured or not, Flora had had no intentions of getting married and being dictated to for the rest of her life, and yet here she was wed, and still trying to comprehend how she got here. Her mum had warned her not to be so quick in rejecting Henry’s offer of marriage, pointing out that he was a malleable man who would make no unreasonable demands on her. Flora had argued she looked upon Henry as nothing more than a friend. Her mum had advised that marrying a friend could be the start for a good marriage. Flora disagreed, mostly because she had had no plans to wed. Her mum reminded her that she and Da would not be around forever and that life was not easy for an unwed woman. Her mum had been right about both.

Her husband turned a smile on her when he caught her eye and she found herself returning it. The man’s smile had to be contagious since she had found it irresistible to ignore, her smile responding to his in kind every time. Not that she minded smiling. A smile did the soul good, like now, lifting the gloom that had weighed on her.

Still, though, she had not wanted a husband, and yet she had one.

“Doing well, wife?” he asked as he turned his horse to ride alongside her.

“Well enough, husband.”

“No complaints, a good sign in a wife,” he said quite pleased.

She nodded and smiled like a dutiful wife wishing she did not have to stay in the marriage yet thinking there was nothing else left for her. Marriage to Torin had been her only recourse.

“You also mind your tongue more than not, which is something I appreciate since I am not partial to chatty women.”

If only he knew, but then it would not be long before he found out that she rarely held her tongue. She had been taught to express her thoughts and opinions, and it was only due to a recent illness that had troubled her throat that she had had to limit her talk.

She thought it only fair to give him some warning. “I do speak my piece, my lord.”

His smile teased, but his dark eyes warned. “Not too often, though.”

Words could produce a battle if one let them, and some battles simply were not worth fighting. She kept a pleasant smile herself when she asked, “Will the cleric who travels with us leave us soon? I believe I recall you saying he traveled with us for safety concerns.”

“You are observant,” Torin said, eyeing his wife with a questionable tilt of his head.

“Curious, my lord,” she corrected softly.

“Curiosity can bring on endless questions, another thing I will not abide from my wife,” he cautioned.

“I will do my best,” she offered. “And the cleric?”

“Not your concern,” he said, his smile having faded some. “Tell me, wife, does your curiosity extend to the marriage bed?”

If he thought to have her shy away in embarrassment, he was mistaken. She was eager to respond, but a fierce scream tore through the woods and the next thing she knew her husband flung himself at her, his arms locking around her tight as he took them both to the ground.
Lord Donald granted his only child and daughter permission to wed a Northman she had lost her heart to, but it came with a stipulation. Their first-born son would return and rule the Clan MacShane upon the old lord’s death.
That time is now as is the necessity for Lord Bhric to wed. His mother has arranged a marriage with a neighboring clan’s only daughter. His mother is aware that he favors tall, strong, fearless women and so he does not worry over his new bride… until he meets her.
Tavia of the Clan Strathearn is not only petite and quiet, accustomed to being a dutiful daughter, but an accident has left her with a limp that hampers certain activities. She is not happy about the arranged marriage to Lord Bhric. He is part Northmen, having been raised in a distant land with what many believe are savages. But she has no choice, her marriage will benefit her needy clan. She tells herself she has the strength to do this. She will make it a good marriage. She will not be frightened of her new husband… until she meets him.
They are an unlikely pair not suited at all for each other. Or are they? While Tavia does the best to make the most of her marriage things start happening at her new home that people find strange. Soon, whispers begin to circulate that Tavia has brought evil with her and that she has bewitched Lord Bhric. She gathers the courage she never believed she had and sets out to solve problems she fears may have followed her to her new home.
Bhric soon discovers that his wife is nothing like he believed her to be. She is more fearless than he expected. When he realizes someone or something is out to harm her, he will stop at nothing to keep her safe. He cannot lose her, not now when he finally realizes he loves her.
Bhric and Tavia work together to solve the mystery, but it is a longtime secret they discover that shocks them both and makes them realize they were always meant for each other.
*****Note: While this trilogy does not need to be read in sequence, each book a standalone, Tavia and other characters from Highland Myth Trilogy were first introduced in Highland Secrets A Cree & Dawn Novel… a prelude of sorts to their individual stories.
She should not be there, but she hadn’t been able to resist. She had come here often when she was young. It was her escape, a place to dream, imagine, hope. Her da would scold her, warning her that the forest held beauty, but it also held danger, and she should not venture in it alone. Still, though, he had never stopped her… until the accident.

A sudden sound had her turning and she smiled seeing that a large pine tree had shed some of the snow that had weighed heavily on its branches. The towering tree appeared pleased with itself, its spreading branches no longer drooping, now proudly lifted, finally free of its burden.

If only one could shed problems so easily.

The last few days had been more sun than clouds melting a good portion of the snow that had fallen in intervals for the last week. Not that it was the last of the winter snow, there would be more, but she would not be here to see it.

The sad thought caused her heart to turn heavy and she focused on her surroundings committing the forest she had come to know and love to memory. She went to take a step to walk a bit farther into the woods and a sudden pain struck her leg, causing her to stumble. She could not prevent herself from falling, though she wisely twisted her body so she would land in a snowdrift.

Tavia laughed and sat up, brushing off the snow that had fallen on her. It reminded her of when she was young and would jump or fall, in play, into the snowdrifts. A pain turned her laughter to a wince, stealing the happy memory and reminding her of her limitations. The accident had left her with a limp and the snow and cold made it all that more difficult. She would suffer for her trek into the forest. Her limp would be more pronounced and her leg painful for a day or two. At the moment, she did not care. It was more important that she had this time here and felt as free and carefree as she had—what seemed like not that long ago.

She got herself to her feet with some difficultly and realized the walk back to the keep would be painful, but worth it for this brief taste of freedom. In a few days, it would all be gone.

After a shake of her cloak to rid it of the remaining snow, she took a cautious step and grimaced from the pain that rippled through her leg. The walk back was going to be more difficult than she thought. She would need to take her time, keep her pace slow. It did not help that a chill crept through her, the air having gotten a sudden bite to it and the sun having ducked behind a cloud.

Worry began to take hold, not about her painful return to the keep, she could manage that. Once at the keep, she would rest her leg and apply a warm cloth that would ease her suffering. What worried her more and had since she had first learned of what the future held for her was… what would her new husband think of her limp and the problems that came with it?

Tavia had had little decision in the matter, the marriage arrangement necessary to her clan. Her da had been upset but adamant about the marriage when he had told her about it. Clan Strathearn would not survive if the marriage did not take place. It was her duty to help the clan.

It had only been her and her da, her mum having died giving birth to her and her da never finding another woman he loved as much as he loved Tavia’s mum. He’d been a wonderful, loving da, which had made it easier for her to be a loving, obedient daughter. Now she was expected to be a caring, obedient wife to a man she had never met. And a man more Northman than Highlander. But with his clan bordering a small section of her clan to the north, he could provide protection. It also brought much needed help in many different ways to her clan, sufficient food being one of them. With the clan dwindling, it was difficult to provide the necessities. Her new husband, Lord Bhric, intended to infuse the clan with his own people, populating it more and growing it strong once again.

Tavia could not deny her clan such an opportunity, even if it cost her dearly.

She made slow progress through the forest, not something she minded. She cherished this time alone. It had been hectic the last week or more with Lord Cree and Lady Dawn here to help solve a problem plaguing the clan. But it had been settled. At least she hoped it had. There was still concern for the woman, Fia, in the dungeon, but a claim had been made on her and her da was considering it. She had no idea what her husband would have to say about it, or if he would leave it to her da to decide.
