The infamous warrior Cree is paraded before the village Dowell and though shackled and wounded he walks with arrogant pride, meeting all the curious and fearful stares of the villagers with a fierceness that has them quickly turning their heads away... all but one woman.
Dawn cannot keep her eyes off the captured warrior, though tales of his exploits suggests he’s more devil than man. When his eyes meet hers, she wonders if the notorious tales are true for only the devil himself could be that sinfully handsome.
Dawn is summoned by the liege lord Colum and ordered to tend Cree, in all ways possible, while he awaits his fate, and please him she must or suffer the consequences. Colum laughs when he issues his orders. He’s sending not only a plain woman to please the mighty warrior in his final days, but one he’ll find no pleasure with. After all what man wants a woman who cannot utter a sound?
But no shackles can hold Cree and when he breaks free he returns to claim the voiceless woman who found a way into his silent heart.

Dawn was carried along with the throng of excited villagers, pushing at those around her so as not to get crushed. News had spread fast about the capture and soon now the warriors would return with the prisoner in tow and she, like all the others, was eager to have a look.

The village folk continued to compete for positions along the route into the Village Dowell, elbowing and shoving, each wanting a good view until a woman yelled out, “I see them.”

The scrambling stopped and all heads turned.

Dawn stretched her neck to see past the swarm in front of her. Luckily, she was taller than many of the women and even some of the men, so it took only a bit of a stretch and a turn and she had a clear view of the road.

The troop had crested and was descending the last of the rolling hills that lead to the village. The warriors wore smiles; their chests puffed with pride. Several hands shot high waving weapons and victorious shouts filled the air. This was a joyous day for the village and for Colum in particular. He was liegeman for the feudal lord, Roland Gerwan, Earl of Carrick who no doubt would be pleased with the capture of the infamous warrior Cree.

His name ran shivers through Dawn, as it did to anyone who heard it. Cree was feared like no other warrior and woe to those who believed otherwise. Where he tread, rivers of blood flowed, those he touched suffered greatly, and those who survived his attacks prayed not for mercy, but for death.

Dawn crossed her arms over her chest and rubbed, a chill prickling her flesh, though the early autumn air was warm. She cast a quick glance to the sky and saw that a dark cloud had blotted out the sun and more clouds rushed threateningly to blight the sky.

A boney grip on her arm startled her and she shot a quick glance down to see Old Mary beside her. She had been old as long as Dawn could remember. A good, caring soul Mary was, though many thought her a bit touched in the head and avoided her.

“A bad portent, bad indeed.” Mary frowned and released Dawn’s arm, then shuffled her stooped body through the crowd and disappeared.

Her ominous prediction only served to chill Dawn more and once again she rubbed at her arms, the flesh beneath her gray linen shift cold with fear. She could not say why she did not take to heart Old Mary’s warning and leave as the old woman had done. Perhaps it was curiosity that kept hold, since Dawn wondered if it was the devil the warriors had captured and with him locked away, peace could possibly prevail.

The shouts grew louder, the crowd cheering, applauding their victory. Dawn smiled along with the others proud of the warriors as they marched by, stains of battle; dirt, sweat and blood heavy upon them.

Moments later dead silence struck the crowd, not a gasp or startled cry, not even a breath was heard, though many were held.

And Dawn? She stood unable to move, as if a winter wind had swept down and frozen her solid. Never had she seen a man the size of Cree. She stared unable to take her eyes off him. He walked behind Colum’s horse; his wrists bound and tethered by shackle and chains, though he looked fit enough to break free from his solid constraints. He was massive in size, both height and width and his bare chest was a mass of thick muscles and spotted with dried blood. More muscles bunched along his arms and dark leather leggings could not hide more of the same. Dark boots were the only other thing he wore.

Dawn hesitated to glance at his face fearing what she would see, but she could not stop her curiosity and slowly she turned her attention there.

Her heart slammed in her chest and then lurched in her throat. He was so handsome that she could not take her eyes off him. Even grime and blood could not hide his fine features. God had surely favored him for the more her eyes drank in, the more beauty she saw and only God could have made someone so splendid. His long brown hair was not only threaded with strands the color of gold, but also mixed with the bright white yellow color of the sun.

Her eyes caught his then and her breath left her in a heavy whoosh. They were dark, like the blackest night. She wanted to look away but she couldn’t. There was something about his eyes that completely absorbed her, held her, bound her to him as the chain that tethered him did and then like a startling slap in the face, she realized he was staring back at her.
Cree and Dawn’s story continues in Forbidden Highlander.
Dawn struggles to accept her future as Cree’s mistress while his future bride Lucerne Gerwan arrives in the village. But there is more for her to worry over. The attempts on her life continue and she fears Cree’s reaction when he learns that she carries his child.
The situation grows worse when warriors from the McClusky clan arrive in the village and the laird, Kirk McClusky, claims that Dawn is his daughter. Dawn wonders if it can be true and though her father insists she return home with him, she knows her love for Cree will never allow her to leave him. She cannot envision life without him.
Cree faces many obstacles in ensuring Dawn will be his, the hardest being his own failure to tell Dawn how he truly feels about her. But when she is taken from him, his temper rages and nothing stops him from bringing her home. He cannot think of life without her.
Cree and Dawn battle old secrets that finally surface and threaten to tear them apart. And it is with strength and courage that they fight for their love and a future together.
Cree’s future bride would soon be entering the village. There had been a flurry of activities in preparation of her arrival the past week. And a light snow that had fallen a few days ago had some worrying that she would be delayed.

The villagers were probably gathering now, lining up along the entrance to the Village Dowell just as they had done when Cree had been captured and strutted before the village a couple of months ago, though he had not been greeted with joy, but rather fear and trepidation.

While Dawn had been as eager as the other villagers to get a look at the infamous warrior Cree; she was not as anxious to see his intended. And if she heard one more whisper of sympathy for her plight she would scream... if only she could.

There were so many times she wished that she had a voice, that she hadn’t been born unable to make a sound. She would love to laugh as others did, even cry, though most of all she’d love to scream out in pure pleasure when Cree made her climax over and over.

She shook the sorrowful thoughts away. She would never have a voice so why dwell on the impossible. What mattered now was that she carried Cree’s child and he knew nothing about the babe. She had managed to avoid him this past week by feigning illness after having learned that he was to marry, though she hadn’t been able to avoid Elsa. Cree had insisted that Elsa tend her, and she had been relieved when the woman claimed that she suffered from a sour stomach and suggested a light fare and rest for a few days.

How long she could keep Cree at a distance when their appetites for each other were ravenous, she didn’t know. She missed him already but then she had foolishly fallen in love with the mighty warrior... a mistake. One, however, she had no control over. She could not stop loving him no matter how hard she tried. And he had told her that he would never let her go, that she belonged to him and always would.

She wondered if he would feel the same when he discovered she carried his child.

A knock sounded just before the door opened and she prayed it wasn’t Cree. She didn’t want to see him now even though she missed him terribly.

Old Mary shuffled in the cottage, a light dusting of snow covering her hooded cloak. “The snow will be heavy by nightfall. It is good the bride arrives soon.”

Dawn nodded, though didn’t smile and motioned Old Mary to join her at the table filling a tankard with hot cider for her.

The old woman sat, her gnarled hands eagerly seeking the warmth of the tankard. “Tongues are wagging so fast about the pending arrival of Lucerne Gerwan that it makes my head hurt. I hear tell that her father and mother will be arriving soon as well. I have also heard that Lucerne is beautiful and thought you might want to have a peek for yourself.”

Dawn raised a brow.

“Don’t tell me you don’t want to see what she looks like?” Old Mary whispered conspiratorially. “How could you not want to see the woman who will wed the man you love?”

Dawn’s eyes turned wide. She had not dared tell anyone how she felt about Cree. It had been her secret or so she thought. Was it that obvious that she loved him?

Old Mary nodded, as if answering her silent question. “Anyone would have to be a fool not to see how much you love him.” She reached out and patted Dawn’s hand. “But then I see more than most.”

Dawn shook her head and circled her finger over and over again at her temple.

“You most certainly are not crazy for falling in love with him. Love is the crazy one. I sometimes think that love is a prankster that enjoys playing tricks on people until finally love stops its antics and brings two people happily ever after together.”

There would be no happily ever after for Dawn, though she had to agree with Old Mary... love was certainly a prankster.

“You should go take a peek at the woman who thinks to steal Cree from you.”

How could the woman steal what rightfully belonged to her? An arrangement had been made and Cree would honor it. She had been irrational to think that she would be anymore to Cree than what she was... a kept woman.

“Go see for yourself that you have more to offer him than she ever would,” Old Mary encouraged.

Even if she wanted to, and there was a part of her that did, everyone thought her ill and resting. Lila had stopped to see how she was doing and had told her that many villagers inquired as to her well-being. Dorrie had even delivered her meal one evening and had fussed over her as had Flanna. And then there was the warrior who stood guard outside the cottage door. If she dared step foot outside Cree would be informed of it immediately.
Readers have fallen in love with Cree, the mighty Highland warrior, and Dawn, the courageous woman born without a voice. Their story started in Highlander Unchained and continued in Forbidden Highlander. Now the Highlander Trilogy comes to a conclusion in Highlander’s Captive. The story centers on Cree’s sister Wintra. Much like her brother, she is strong-minded and willful and intends to do as she pleases until...
Torr is a mighty Highland warrior on a mission. He must find the powerful warrior Cree’s sister and return her home, but it isn’t as easy as he thought it would be. As much as he is determined to complete his task, she is even more determined that he doesn’t, until...
Wintra is in no need of help from the brute warrior that her brother Cree has sent to bring her home. She has plans of her own and they include marrying the man she has fallen in love with, whether her brother likes it or not. But stuck in the woods in a snowstorm completely naked with the mighty warrior, thanks to her own foolishness, has her more persistent than ever to find her way back to the man she loves, until...
They fall in love and nothing is the same after that, especially when Torr returns Wintra home to Cree. The truth comes to light about many things, especially one long held secret that changes everything for Wintra.
He had not seen her since late last night when Sloan had come to their bedchamber to inform him that his sister Wintra had been abducted. He had ordered Dawn to bed and left before making sure she had obeyed him, something she rarely did.

He had been busy with plans to go after his sister and kill the idiot bastard who had unwisely abducted her. Thoughts of Dawn had drifted in and out of his mind throughout the night and he had imagined her tucked safely in their bed sleeping. But sunrise usually found her up and about, after they made love, which they did often, and was what he wished they were doing right now. Of course it would be a quick coupling, but no less satisfying. It never was with Dawn, even though she could not speak a word. It still amazed him that she had survived since birth, nineteen years, without being able to utter a sound. Not a peep, a squeak, or moan, could she manage. Nothing. Yet to him, he could hear her clearly in her gestures, even more clearly now that he was completely and madly in love with her—damn it.

He had never expected to fall in love. He had expected to take a wife and have her produce heirs. Love had never been a consideration. He had had no time for it. Yet this voiceless woman had stolen his heart and he didn’t want it back. It was hers to keep forever just as her heart—all of her—belonged to him. He growled low at his foolish musings. He had no time for them, though he wanted all the time he could get with Dawn, if he could find her. Where could she have gone off to? The snow was heavy on the ground and she should be careful, especially now that she was carrying their child.

“Damn,” he mumbled, a sudden thought disturbing him. What if she was in trouble and not able to call out for help? He scowled and this time shouted, “Has anyone seen Dawn?”

Heads shook, but no one spoke up.

Cree turned to Sloan. “You haven’t seen her?”

“Not since last night.”

“Find her,” Cree snapped, annoyed he had allowed so much time to pass without checking on her. He hoped that he worried needlessly and she was still abed. She could use the rest being with child, not that she would agree. She was always off somewhere, visiting, helping, disobeying him. “Find her,” he said again.

“Afraid you’ve lost her?” Sloan asked with a smile, which faded quickly when Cree’s dark eyes narrowed and his scowl deepened. Sloan turned and hurried off without saying another word. He knew Cree too well to know when to turn silent and retreat.

Cree looked over a small contingent of his warriors gathered in the Great Hall. He would take only twenty of his warriors for now, though it would be more like having fifty warriors compared to other fighting troops. His men were highly skilled, and they would follow him into hell if he asked, though they already had. Endless missions for the King had taken its toll on all of them, but at least it had not been in vein. Now, after constant toil of battle, they had what they had fought so long and hard for—a permanent home. A place they could always return to and where family and friends would welcome them back.

Now, unlike other times, he was reluctant to leave. Now he had Dawn, and she had been through her own hell with her true mother trying to kill her and, in the end, having to take her mother’s life to protect herself.

“Cree.”

The strong voice cut through his musings and had him turning his head to face Kirk McClusky, Dawn’s true father and a good man.

“We want to help,” Kirk said, “what can we do?”

“I appreciate your offer, but I would much prefer if you remained here at the keep and watched over Dawn, not an easy task I’m afraid.”

“She does have an independent nature, though as her father I don’t think that is a bad thing,” Kirk admitted with pride.

“You might want to think twice about that since she’s now carrying your grandchild,” Cree reminded.

“Good point. I’ll be sure to be extra vigilant.”

Cree was about to tell him that he would need to be when one of his warriors entered the room, stomping the snow off himself. “Snow has started falling again?” Cree asked as the warrior approached.

“Aye, my lord, and if we don’t leave soon, they’ll be no leaving today at all.”

Cree nodded. “Then we leave now.”

The warriors stood and filed out of the keep, not a one mumbling or complaining. They would do as Cree ordered and brave the winter storm to help find his sister.
