The other, wild and crazy. The kind that makes your soul spark back to life. Both of them speak to me. Both of them want me.
I’m in the middle of a mess, and with my own demons, I don’t know how to fight my way out of it. When the situation becomes dangerous, I have no choice but to protect them both.
And in doing that, exposing myself and them, to very real pain. Pain I’ve fought so long to avoid. And there they are, looking at me with those incredible eyes, both saying…

Ruthless, cold, and cruel.

I know that better than anyone.

I’ve lived it.

The problem with that is the bitterness it brings into your heart.

You try and avoid it. You try as best you can to get past it. You fight and claw your way back up to the surface to no avail. It sinks into your very soul, curling its ugly hands around your heart and keeping it held tight, keeping you in a state of feeling like you can never breathe, like it’s always going to hurt.

Before the accident, I was happy enough.

I had the club. The support. Friends. Family.

Then, with one pathetic fucking mistake, everything changed.

The woman of a man I considered a close friend was killed under my watch.

And nothing, for either of us, was ever the same.

Now, it seems like darkness surrounds me constantly. Like no matter where I fucking go, I can’t escape it. It’s always there, watching me with that big filthy grin on its face, making me wish with everything inside that it would just take me instead of tormenting me daily.

And then, I met them.

Penelope.

Chantelle.

I don’t do women. Fuck knows I don’t have the time or the patience. I fuck, I leave, and that’s the end of it. Emotions mean nothing to me; I blocked that off a long time ago. But those two women, the way they get under my skin, drives me fucking crazy.

The problem is, there are two of them.

And only one of me.

How do you choose between heaven and hell?

That’s how utterly different they are.

And yet I’m equally drawn to either side. My body gravitating toward them like a moth to a flame.

I can’t stay away.

And I really, really fucking should.

Because in the end, someone will get hurt.

And I don’t know if I can take any more pain.

~1~

EARLIER – CHANTELLE

Why the fuck is it so cold?

I rub my arms and wait for the cab, hoping like hell it arrives soon. My bosoms feel like they’re about to drop right off my chest. I shiver, and the cool night air tickles my skin. Teach me for wearing slutty clothes. Although, with all those bikers in there tonight, what is a girl to do? I have to make some sort of impression. Especially after Mason carried Saskia out over his shoulder like some sort of Viking.

We all want that.

My, oh my, yes, we all want that.

“Yo.”

I hear the low, masculine voice and turn to see Boston, in all his manly glory, staring down at me. Hot. Totally hot. Different than the other men. Not as outgoing, far quieter, but with an equal amount of danger. He has the best eyes I’ve ever seen on a man. I noticed it the moment I saw him. They’re yellow with a tinge of brown. And with his dark, thick hair that curls at the base of his neck only makes him look even hotter.

“Hey there,” I say, blinking and then shivering.

“Cold?” he asks, pulling out a cigarette and lighting it.

I want to be that cigarette, pressed between his lips, him sucking the life out of me.

Good lord, Chantelle. Calm down.

“Well, judging by my nipples, I’d go with a big fat yes. I could cut glass with them right now. They’re on high alert.”

A hint? Oh, absolutely. I’ve had my eye on Boston for a few weeks now. Of course, tonight I very nearly backed off when Saskia told me Penelope was interested, but she assured me to go for it.

I mean, she would have told me if she had feelings for him? Right?

Boston’s eyes drop to my nipples, and that gaze lingers long enough for my panties to become wet. Good god, I need to get laid. Preferably by the six-feet-tall he-devil standing right in front of me staring at my breasts like he wants to devour them.

It’s safe to say I’ve never been shy when it comes to my sexuality. Hell no. I embrace it. I’m a beautiful woman, and I know what I can and can’t have. I’d never be slutty, and I’d never take something that wasn’t mine, but I know what I want, and I’m incredibly sexual.

No shame in that.

And if anyone has something to say about it, they’re more than welcome to find my asshole and kiss it.

“You waitin’ for a cab?” he finally asks.

“Yeah and freezing my booty off. You waiting, too?”

He shakes his head and nods down the street a little. I glance over and see his bike parked up. Hot. So hot. Midnight blue, silver trimmings, big thick black seat. I’d love to know what that feels like between my legs.

“Oh, nice.”

“You want a ride?”

I swallow and my body buzzes. Do I want a ride? Of course I want a ride!

“Of you, or the bike?” I ask him, voice low and sultry, glancing up at him from beneath my lashes.
People, in my opinion, don’t take happiness seriously enough. They go through life, constantly trying to please other people. I do, however, take my happiness seriously. Very seriously.
But, when things in my life, go suddenly south, I am left with more than one choice. Do what’s right, or do what’s wrong? That, on any normal day, would be an easy choice for me.
I’ll do whatever I need to keep my life flowing with happiness. But when it comes to love, everything changes. And him. I love him.
Which means I have to correct my wrong doings. I need him to forgive me. I need money. It’s the only way.
When a job for a live-in maid comes up, with excellent pay, I jump at the chance. When I realize it’s for the member of a Motorcycle Club, I still don’t back down.
Even if it means I have to live with and work for, one of the hottest, broodiest and most difficult men I’ve ever met. I’ll do whatever it takes.
Only, I don’t expect to actually like him. The mysterious biker. The one who I seem drawn to. And now I have a real problem.
Do what’s right, or let my heart take me where it wishes? Two men. Once choice.
Things are about to get very, very complicated.

That’s how I see it, anyway.

You can either choose to do what makes other people happy, or you can flip them the bird and do what makes you happy. People, in my opinion, don’t take happiness seriously enough. They’re forever trying to please someone else, no matter who it might be. A family member, a partner, a boss, a friend, hell, even their children. Everyone puts everyone else first.

Not me.

Call me selfish—hell, I probably am.

But that’s a choice I made a long time ago.

I decided I was the most important thing in my life, and I do whatever I have to do to make sure it stays that way.

Of course, with a name like Saskia, little to no money, an ex-boyfriend in prison—who, mind you, I still love—and a shitty ass job, it isn’t always easy to find inner happiness.

But here I am, giving it a red hot go.

I’ve never felt pity for myself, and I rarely take pity on others. You choose your life, do you not? Sure, don’t get me wrong, you might have a bad start, a horrific story to tell, and shit go down that is far from pleasant, but you still choose how you walk your path. Do you drag your feet, feeling sorry for yourself and living in misery, or do you pick your damned feet up and skip down that path, refusing to let anyone knock you down?

Yeah.

Like I said.

A choice.

I’ve had many choices. I’ve done some things I regret. In fact, I’ve done a lot of things I regret, including putting my boyfriend behind bars, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

Even if it means you pay the price for it.

No doubt that’s coming for me.

Sometime soon.

But, for now, I’m going to keep on rocking.

Because I’ll be damned if anyone is dimming my shine.

~1~

SASKIA

“Yo!”

I look up from waiting for a customer’s order and glance at my friend Chantelle. Not Chantelle with an S, but Chantelle with a C. She makes sure you know it, too. Because, somehow, she thinks it makes a difference. She’s waving, newspaper in hand, face flushed, blond hair bouncing almost as much as her fake boobs. I hold up my finger, indicating I’ll be one minute, and then glance back at my customer, wondering if he’s decided what he’s going to eat yet.

He’s asked me more than once what’s in every item on the menu.

I’ve never been known for being overly polite, I mean, I shut my mouth when I have to, I smile, I get tips, I do my job, but sometimes people really just ... piss me off. And, unfortunately, my mouth has gotten me into trouble because of it.

More than once.

“The scrambled eggs,” he goes on, giving Chantelle a foul look for interrupting him before glancing back up at me. He doesn’t hide the fact that his eyes stop on my breasts before he focuses back on my face. Jerk. And he wants me to professional? He didn’t even make it a quick glance, that was a slow, drawn-out, perve on my breasts!

Not cool.

“Do they have any form of dairy in them?”

Last time I checked, scrambled eggs were loaded with the good stuff, including dairy. Usually, at the very least, cheese. Everyone knows this.

It’s common sense.

Has he never made scrambled eggs before?

Now he’s just pushing my buttons, wasting my time, and eyeing my bosom.

“Well,” I say, rubbing my chin as if thinking about it, “I’m not entirely sure, I mean, I don’t go out the back often, because, well—” I lean down close, and his eyes once more drop to my breasts “—I once caught two waitresses, you know, getting it on out in the kitchen.”

His eyes widen.

I wave a hand and snort, standing up straight again.

“But that wasn’t your question, was it? Don’t worry, I’m like, mostly sure it’s sanitary out there. To answer your question, we use a lot of cheese in our food. The chef just cuts off the old spots, it’s perfectly fine if you do that. I could ask him, if you like, if he uses that cheese in the scrambled eggs? Or are you allergic to dairy?”

He blinks up at me and murmurs, “No, thank you. I’ll have a black coffee.”

“That’s it?” I ask, acting as if I’m shocked. “No food?”

“No,” he grumbles.

“Oh, well, that’s a shame.” I flash him a beaming smile. “The chef really does put his all into his work, you know?”

He stares at me.

I flash him another killer smile and spin on my heel, strutting toward the kitchen to grab a coffee pot. My boss, Hertez, a big scary Mexican guy, glares at me as I fill the pot with fresh coffee. He loves me, secretly. Or maybe he doesn’t and I just like to think he does. Positive and all that.
But there is nothing there. No recognition.

She’s empty.

At least, her eyes are.

She’s staring at me like the very sight of me terrifies her. Like seeing someone like me, is her worst fuckin’ nightmare. Her eyes have hesitantly searched over my body, my tattoos, my scars. It took long, too long, for her to meet my eyes, and when she did, it wasn’t the reaction I’d been fuckin’ prayin’ for, for the last ten years.

Seeing her, it was the only thing that kept me holding on.

Clutching onto the small chance that she might know who I am when I found her again.

I ruined her.

And now she has no idea who I am.

Not a single damned clue.

That hurts almost as much as losing her.

But not nearly as much as spending ten years wondering if she was alive or dead.

Dead, I could deal with. I could mourn and move on.

Alive, I couldn’t.

Because alive meant she could be anywhere.

Alive meant anyone, could be doing anything, to her.

And that thought, that thought haunted me far more than anything.

Fuck, it was like living my worst nightmare.

Every single fuckin’ day.

~1~

NOW – ELLIE

I don’t know who he is.

And yet something in his eyes seems strangely familiar.

Erin told me these people were looking for me, that they know who I am, and where I came from. I know nothing of who I am. All my memories are like nightmares, some of which I don’t know if they are real, or fake. I don’t know my own name. I don’t know anything about my past. I only know that for the last ten years, I’ve been Raven. A girl with no past. No family. Owned by a monster. A monster disguised as a saint.

Raven isn’t my real name.

I’ve always known that.

I just couldn’t quite remember what it was.

He took everything from me, little by little, and now I’m nothing but an empty shell, grasping, trying to figure out who the hell I am and what my purpose in life is.

When I escaped, and came back here, the only place where I knew I might find answers, I didn’t know where else to go. I didn’t know anything, and I was terrified. This place. It was the only thing I knew with certainty. It was the tiny piece I held onto, through all his torment. It was the reason for my being, I knew that. I just didn’t know why. So, I came here. Only, once I got here, I didn’t know where to go. Utterly terrified, I was left flailing around blindly.

That’s when Erin found me.

Cold, wet and crying on the street. She helped me, took me in, took me to the police, but what could I give them, when I knew nothing of myself? I don’t know his name. He was always just master, to me. I don’t know where I was kept. I found out it was a church when I tried to escape, but that’s it. I don’t know my real name. As I said, I’m Raven.

His.

Only his.

I’m an empty canvas. Only behind my mask, I’m a tormented mix of agony.

And then my face showed up on a missing persons ad, and Erin told me about it. Ellie. That’s my name, or so it says on the flyer. I went missing ten years ago. Any information, will be hugely rewarded. Erin told me it was my choice if I followed it up, but I’d been with her for a year and a half now, and it was the closest we’d ever come to having some information about me.

The police have been trying to get in contact with me. They’ll come around soon, no doubt. They’ll want to know more. They’ll want to talk to the mysterious strangers that showed up at my doorstep. They’ll want answers. Because, like us, they too have none. And they too, have spent the last year and a half trying to find out who I am, with no luck.

This is it.

But I’m utterly terrified.

Because, deep down, I don’t know who to trust, and who not to.

Erin is the only person I rely on.

She’s the only solid I have.
From the second you're born, the shaping begins.
Who you are. Who you’ll become. Where your life will lead. What kind of heart you’ll have.
If you’ll be good, or bad. From your very first breath, those around you influence everything about you. I was influenced by the worst. By a monster. A cold hearted, soulless man.
The devil himself. But I got away. I started fresh. I reshaped my broken edges to resemble something just a little normal.
Only now, my past is catching up with me. My demons have returned. And they’re back with a vengeance. The only protection I have is a Motorcycle Club.
I helped them. Now they’re helping me. With a large hit on my head, I’m hustled into the mountains with one very broody, very angry, very gorgeous biker.
He has a mission. A secret bigger than even mine. And he wants the blood of the monster after me. He’s been assigned to protect me. He gets on every nerve I have left. The tension between us is high.
And we’re stuck alone. In the middle of the wilderness.
Things are about to get...interesting.

We all do.

It’s a widely known fact.

Actually, come to think of it, I think it’s probably the most important part of human life. The most crucial. The part that either makes or breaks you.

Your molding.

Doesn’t seem like a big word—hell, it doesn’t even seem like a strong one.

But it’s everything.

The moment you take your first breath in this world, the molding begins. Do your parents hold you too much, or too little? Are you over loved? Under loved? Are you spoiled? Forced to work hard? It all defines you. It all creates little pieces of who you’ll become.

Some doctors say the first two years of your life shape you. Those two years create the foundations of your personality, of the person you’ll become as an adult. That’s why it’s so important all the right things are done in those years. If they’re not, does that mean you’ll have no chance of becoming a decent human being? Are you forever ruined by a mere twenty-four months of your life?

My answer is probably yes and no.

I have my reasons for this. One, because I was molded by the worst. By a monster. By the darkest of the dark. The devil himself. Did that make me a bad person? Absolutely. At times, I’ve done things that I can’t even allow myself to think about now for fear they’ll ruin me.

But, also, I believe I’m a good person. I want to help people. I want to be better. I don’t want to be like him. To live the life he tried so hard to fashion me for. So, the complicated answer is yes and no. People are molded from the moment they’re born, but that doesn’t always mean they’ll stay in the messy, ugly shape they’ve been carved into. Sometimes, they’ll run their own hands over the edges, smooth out what’s been damaged, and make themselves almost normal again.

Almost.

That’s what I am, I think.

An almost.

And I’m completely okay with that.

-1-

THEN – CHARLIE

I stare at the cold, green eyes of my father. He can’t see me. But I can see him. He’s standing by the window, on the phone, barking into the mouthpiece. He doesn’t know I’m in here because I’m not supposed to be in here. His office is out of bounds, the one place in the house my mother and I are forbidden to go. So, of course, I came. Curious as to what made it so special, what made it such a dark zone.

I didn’t find anything.

Although, at seven, I can’t really read very well and everything I found was all papers, and computers, and everything I don’t understand or even know how to use. To me, his office seems boring. I wouldn’t want to play in here anyway, so I’m not sure why he would tell me I can’t come in.

But my father isn’t a nice man.

In fact, I don’t think I like him at all.

My friends at school tell me that’s not very nice because he’s my father, and I shouldn’t say things like that about my father.

But they don’t know what he’s like.

They don’t know how it feels when he slaps me across the face. My eyes water, and my face stings, and it sometimes makes my nose bleed. But mostly, it makes my mommy cry, and I don’t like to hear her cry. So, I don’t have to like him, I don’t think. I mean, girls at school don’t like the bullies because they’re mean. And that’s what my dad is, a bully.

“What do you mean they’re coming—”

My father yells loudly into the phone but then stops talking and spins around. My head whips around too, because I hear my mother scream. It’s loud, and she sounds really scared. My hands move from their spot on my lap and I go to rush out, but if he knows I’m in here, I’ll never be able to help. So, I tuck myself back behind the big lounge chair that’s hiding me, and I’m quiet. My heart hurts a lot, it feels kind of like it’s going to leap right out of my chest.

I’m scared.

Dad’s door swings open, and I peek my head around from behind the chair in the corner and see two big, scary men holding Mommy. She’s crying, and one of them has his hand over her mouth. I start crying too, because they’re hurting her. Why are they hurting her? Mommy isn’t mean, she’s kind and loving. Why isn’t my father doing anything?

My knees are shaking.

I’m so afraid.

“How did you get into my house?”

My father doesn’t ask them to let her go, he isn’t even looking at her. Why isn’t he saving her? In the books Mommy reads me, the prince always saves the princess. So, why isn’t he doing anything?

“Tricked your silly wife here into thinking we were here to fix your broken stove. Stupid woman. You’d think you would have picked someone smarter.”
One accident changed my life. One single second changed everything for me. In one terrifying moment, everything I knew was gone. Music is the only thing that keeps me holding on.
Only it isn’t enough to lift the shadows of my past. And when I meet him, dangerous and different, I can’t turn away.
He is forbidden to me. The President of a Motorcycle Club. A man who could bring noise back into my soundless world. But the shadows of my past haunt me.
They linger like a dark nightmare, reminding me that we can never be. Because my sins are far too heavy. And my mind far too broken. Music is the only escape I can allow into my life.
The only one that I will let seep through my hungry veins. But he’s always there. And he’s persistent.
But if he knew what I kept behind closed doors…no. I must continue my life just the way it is. Without him.
Breathing in my nightmare. Living in my Hushed Torment.

The croaky, frustrated voice fills my ears, but I keep my eyes on the road, my mind clear. Fighting. Always fighting. It’s like a wave that keeps crashing into me, over and over, no matter how hard I keep rising to the surface. His voice is low and pitched in a way that is irritating. Sometimes, I wish I couldn’t hear him so for a second I could remember how it felt to just breathe in the silence.

I loved him once.

Maybe I still do.

I’m not really sure.

That’s a terrible feeling, not being sure. But, in my mind, I have to know that if I’m doubting it, then my heart isn’t truly in it. I always believed that I’d know real love, the one that never fades, the one that captures your breath and never lets it go. From the moment I met him, I didn’t feel that. It was love, of a sort, but not the love I forever dreamed of.

I hum a tune under my breath—soft, soulful. I take myself to another place, a place where I can be just me: Amalie. A place where he isn’t, which makes me sad. A world where only I exist. I imagine my fingers gliding over the piano keys, I let my body feel the same things it feels when the music flows into me, hitting my soul, taking me to another world. A world of freedom. A world of happiness.

Music is my life.

“Amalie, I’m speaking to you!”

He’s always speaking to me. Or more so, at me. Over and over again, he throws his words at me. There is no happiness between us anymore. Four years together, and I’ve forgotten what it felt like to laugh with him. Maybe we were never a match. Dramatics were always high on his list. Opinionated. Loud. I’m the complete opposite. I like my world silent, except for music. Everything else is just a waste of energy.

“Amalie!” he barks.

I curl my fingers around the steering wheel, trying to stay calm. My therapist said not to feed it. Not to react when he’s behaving like this. She doesn’t understand how hard that is. He learned how to drive me to a point where I would explode, but I hated that side of myself. I’ve always been calm and at peace. Quiet. He brings out the worst in me. And then he turns it around and makes it my fault.

I’ve tried to break up with him. Three times.

He puts the guilt back on me, and my softness takes over and he wins.

Every time.

But tonight, I’m calm. I’m at ease. I’m ready for freedom. Ready to pursue my dreams. I’m ready to be something else. Something better. Something different. An opportunity has come up for me and my music, and I’m going to take it. Besides, I know there is someone out there for him, someone better suited, someone who can make him happy.

I don’t think that someone is me.

It’s dark out, and the highway is mostly dead except for the few occasional cars passing by. The wind is howling, and the moon is full, sitting low, lighting up the whole sky, demanding its presence be felt. I glance at it for just a second and feel a sense of calm wash over me. I can do this. It’s for the best. I just have to hold strong.

I take a deep, calming breath and say in the kindest voice I can muster up, “We can’t be together anymore, Caiden.”

My voice, while gentle, is also firm in its delivery.

“I beg your pardon?”

His voice is clipped, and from the corner of my eye, I see him turn toward me. I can’t see his face, but I know he’ll be scowling, the furrows between his brows deepening. I keep my hands on the wheel and my eyes on the road. Breathe in, and out.

“I’m sorry. I’ve tried. But it isn’t working. I don’t love you like I should and that isn’t fair on either of us. An opportunity has come up for my music, and I’m going to take it.”

Dead silence.

It takes him a while to reply, and my chest clenches with anticipation of his reaction. “You’re joking, right?”

Oh, but I wish I was.

I suddenly like I’m carrying a heavy weight. I’ve made my choice, but it doesn’t mean that it was an easy one to make. Caiden has been a part of my life for long enough that I know I’ll miss his presence. But I won’t miss putting my life on hold, because our dreams are different. Our personalities are different.

We’re two of a different kind.

It won’t work.

“No. We’re not doing this again,” he says firmly, arms crossing over his broad chest.

“Caiden,” I say, keeping calm, remembering what my therapist said. Don’t make the situation worse, be straightforward and kind, but stand your ground. “I’m sorry, but it is happening. I’m leaving in two days.”
My dark warrior. My name is Scarlett. You probably know me. I’m America’s number one country music star.
I’m also the loneliest girl you’ll ever meet. He’s as free as a bird. A nomad. Travelling alone.
Nobody to hold him back. He holds the freedom I pray for every single day. He shows me that life can be so much more than what I’m living.
When danger comes knocking, he’ll also show me a different world.
I don’t make any sound, I don’t even move, I just sit on the edge of the water fountain, the cool stone beneath my bottom, the trickling sounds of the water the only noise that can be heard. It’s dark out, the flickering stars and full moon shining light over the fountain, making it look like a magical creation of bursting colors. I slip a finger into the hole of my jeans; so many times my manager Susan has tried to get me to throw these out, and so many times she’s failed.

They’re the only piece of myself I have left.

It seems sometimes they’re the only piece of my life I have left that reminds me I’m still human, that beyond the make-up, the lights, the fame, and the fortune, I’m still just Scarlett. The girl who grew up in Nashville, the girl who loved to ride horses and play in her tree house. The girl who, once, had not one care in the world. These jeans remind me that I’m still a person, that deep inside me, there is still a heart beating, there is still breath in my lungs, there is still hope in my soul.

“That’s the prettiest damned cry I’ve ever heard.”

I jump at the sound of the deep, husky voice that seems to come out of nowhere. I thought I was alone here and, at the realization that I’m not, my heart begins to pound. I’m not supposed to be out alone, but I just needed some time to breathe, to think, to quiet my screaming mind. My eyes dart around the moonlit space, but I can’t see anyone. I blink a few times and then whisper at the voice in the darkness, even though I shouldn’t. I should really get up and walk away. I’m not supposed to talk with strangers.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know anyone was here.”

“Neither did I,” the voice rumbles. “What’s a girl with a voice like an angel and tears that are makin’ even my heart hurt, doin’ sittin’ out here alone? It’s not the safest part of town, darlin’.”

Darlin’.

His voice is rough, dangerous even. Yet, for some reason, I don’t feel afraid, not even a little. He has the kind of voice that would make you feel safe, like nothing in the world would ever touch you while he was around. It’s the kind of voice that tells you he would kill for something he loved. His voice is a comfort I’ve longed for for so many years. I don’t keep looking for him in the darkness, I just stare ahead and talk to the perfect stranger sitting somewhere on the water fountain with me.

“It’s the only place I can get space,” I admit, my voice husky and soft from the tears.

He makes a low sound deep in his chest. “Yeah, I know the feelin’. What’s your name, darlin’?”

Darlin’. I really like it when he calls me that. And I don’t even know him.

It makes my heart expand. It brings a comfort over me, making me feel at ease for the first time in a very, very long while.

“My name is Scarlett.”

He makes a humming sound. “Pretty name. How old are you, Scarlett?”

“Twenty-three.”

“So young to be so sad. What’s got you cryin’?”

I shift, pushing two fingers into the hole in my jeans again. Everyone in the United States of America knows who I am. I became famous at the tender age of nineteen when I was picked up by a scout and signed by a massive record company. I became the face of country music and have spent the last four years living in the middle of that life. Music was once my passion, now it has become my worst enemy, a cloud hovering over my head, something I can’t escape from.

I’m tired.

“I’m Scarlett Belle.”

I tell him my name, as if it’ll make some sort of difference, as if him knowing will make him understand. I hate the sound of my name, it’s so cliché, almost as if my parents called me that knowing one day it would sound good being shouted from a stage or look good flashing on a billboard.

He goes silent for a long while. So long I wonder if he’s still here. Maybe he got up and left; I wouldn’t blame him.

“No kidding,” he finally murmurs. “Should have recognized your voice. Nobody in America has a voice as sweet as yours. Hear you on the radio all the time, got the voice of an angel.”

That was once a compliment, now it just brings heavy sorrow over my chest. I lower my head, my blonde hair falling down beside my cheeks and cascading over my shoulders and breasts. I’ve often prayed for my voice to be taken, for something to happen so I could no longer use it, at least then I could walk away from this life with a valid reason.
