You know the ones.

The empty, soulless fucking eyes of a person who has nothing left inside. Nothing but a bottomless pit of insanity and desperation. Their eyes lose the sparkle, the very thing that makes them who they are. In their place, you’ll find nothing more than bitterness.

That’s what I see when I look at her.

The woman standing in front of me, waving her hands around in the dead of the night, screaming at me. She’s desperate, far gone off the edge of insanity. She’s broken and pathetic. Unfixable. Now she wants to take me down with her.

The problem with that is I probably wouldn’t mind.

If I too could escape the tight grasps of my life, I’d be forever free.

You see, I have the same empty eyes.

The same broken soul.

“You’re staring straight though me, Bohdi. You’re acting like I don’t exist. Will you look at me?”

The screeching voice of my sister-in-law, Sherry, rips through the still night and pierces right into my soul.

“I’m not sure what you want me to say, Sherry. You called me out here in the dead of the night to feed me the same story you’ve been giving me for the last year. I don’t believe it. There is no proof of it. I have little time to be around such lies.”

“I have proof!” she wails, throwing her hands up. “Your son doesn’t belong to you, and I have proof.”

“Where?” I say, crossing my arms, trying to calm my racing heart. “Where is this proof?”

“It’s in my car. I did a secret DNA test. I was right. They’ve been having an affair, your wife and my husband, and the son you think is yours ... isn’t.”

“Show me.”

She moves to her car, and I stare over the edge of the cliff. We’re at a local lookout; the sheer cliff looks over a raging waterfall that connects to some local rapids people often go rafting on. It’s infamous in the area, and people come from far and wide to come to this lookout, staring down at the waterfall as it hammers over some of the deadliest rapids you’ve ever seen.

I personally have no interest in throwing myself anywhere near water that heavy.

Sherry returns a minute later and hands me a piece of paper. I step in front of her car, which has its headlights on, so I can read the writing. She has called me out here at midnight, after calling so many times I had no choice but to come. She’s been nothing but a burden in my life since I met and married my wife, Isla. She’s the disappointment of the family, forever causing drama and bringing chaos into their worlds.

So, it’s safe to say, I had little interest in believing her when she told me Isla and her husband, Daniel, were having an affair and that my son wasn’t mine.

Considering he looks a great deal like me, I find that hard to believe.

I stare at the paper, with my son’s name beside Daniel’s. I look at the writing and then the percentage score. My heart plummets into my stomach as the number 99.99999998% stares back at me. Sherry was right. My son doesn’t belong to me. Instead, he belongs to my friend and brother-in-law, Daniel.

My world begins to crumble beneath me as I stare at the words over and over again. Sherry’s sobbing beside me blurs with the sounds of the raging waterfall, and I can hear nothing but my pounding heart. I read it over and over again, as if that will change anything. As if that will make this fucking nightmare disappear.

“I told you I wasn’t lying. I told you!”

Sherry cries this over and over again, her voice shrill.

She’s lost it.

Hell, she’s a fucking wreck. She’s crying and sobbing and pacing around. She isn’t handling this information well at all.

Can’t say I blame her.

Because of Isla, I’ve changed my entire world. I have given her absolutely everything there is to give.

I’ve lived in fucking misery with no way out.

In the darkest of pits, drowning in myself.

All for nothing.

“What about Taj?” I ask, referring to the newborn baby my wife just fucking had two weeks ago. The baby, and the only other reason I have hung on for so long.

“I don’t know, I haven’t been able to get close enough to Taj to find out,” Sherry cries.

“Stop your crying, Sherry. It won’t fix anything.”

“It won’t fix anything?” she screams, throwing her hands up. “My sister is fucking my husband. They have kids together. I couldn’t fucking have kids. Do you understand that? Do you even begin to understand the pain I’m feeling right now?”

I understand it.

I understand pain better than the fucking best of them.

This is only an extra in the pit of pain I carry around in my soul daily.
I’m not supposed to be here, but I couldn’t not come back and see again, like the first time wasn’t enough.

My entire family—dead.

All of them.

Every single god damned one.

They’re all gone. My brothers. My father. Their lifeless bodies lie on the floor, blood trickling from their mouths, soaking into the floor, forever haunting my memories with the absolute hell that biker club just brought into my life.

I’m too afraid to move, scared that if I do, everything will come crashing down around me and I’ll be forever stuck here with them and their bloodied bodies. I can’t seem to look away, even though I know the best thing would be for me to call the police and be done with this. I stare at my brother Rory’s gaping head. He has been shot right in the forehead, and the mess it left behind is something I’ll never forget.

My father and other brother, Manny, have had their throats slit. Wide gaping wounds, their eyes staring blankly at the ceiling. I grasp at my throat, and I know I have to get out of here. I have to go and never come back. The club that did this, I thought they were good ... I thought he was good. I’ve known Cohen for a long time, and I never thought he’d hurt my family, I never thought he’d leave me with nothing, I never thought, even for a single second, that he’d take everything from me.

He’s a monster.

I think of Briella, knowing she’s my best friend, also knowing I’ll likely never see her again.

I’ve seen too much.

I know too much.

I finally get my feet to move, and I walk over to the safe, the safe where my father kept everything important. Whatever he was up to, this safe holds the key. I punch in a few codes, and pain crashes into my chest when I realize the code is my birthday. Never in a million years did I think he’d use anything to do with me. My father doesn’t love me, at least, that’s what I believed. Now, I’m not so sure. I pull the safe open and stare at the contents inside. There are a heap of papers, some photos, and a few guns. There is also a good load of cash, probably tens of thousands.

My heart leaps into my throat.

I scoop it all out and turn.

I pause, and my heart jumps into my throat as I see Cohen standing in the doorway, staring at me.

He’s got a gun.

“Are you here to finish the job?” I whisper.

“No,” he growls, low. “You’re going to give me everything you have there, and then you’re going to disappear. Do you understand me?”

My hands are trembling, even though they’re full of the contents from the safe. I’m glad Cohen can’t see how scared I am.

“No,” I say, my voice shaky. “No, you’re not having this stuff.”

“You’re goin’ to give it to me, Aviana, or I’m goin’ to make you give it to me.”

“I thought we were friends,” I whisper. “You took my entire family, and now you want the last of what I have left?”

“We are friends, which is exactly why I’ve got to do this. What you have there is not somethin’ you will be safe havin’. If you leave, and you’ve got it, you’ll be hunted.”

What could it possibly be?

What could Cohen want that is so dangerous?

I stare at the bundle in my hands, and Cohen takes a step closer. “Give it to me and get the hell out of here. Never come back. You come back, you’ll die. Your family is incredibly dangerous, and you’re not safe.”

“Not safe from who?” I whisper. “You?”

“I did what I had to do.”

“You killed them all!” I scream, gripping the sides of my head and shaking it, eyes clenched shut. “I trusted you, Cohen. I ... I thought ...”

My eyes pop open to see him taking a step forward, pulling a needle from his pocket. Realization of what he’s going to do hits me hard, and I take a frantic step backward. “I care about you, so much, which is why I don’t want to have to do this, Aviana, but I will.”

“Please,” I say. “I thought you were all my family ...”

His eyes harden and he shakes his head, his voice bitter when he growls, “You’re not family. You’re a means to an end. We got what we needed. Now, you need to leave.”

He doesn’t mean that. Surely, he doesn’t mean that. He’s just saying it so I’ll hate him, so I’ll do as he asks. I know him, we’re friends, maybe even more than that - he wouldn’t be so cruel ... not after everything we’ve shared.
I hear voices, voices that are far too close. Far too fucking close to where I’m trying to cover our tracks.

Told them I’d make it out.

Told them I’d sort this out for us.

I’m running out of time, I’m running out of options.

A low voice echoes through the trees, and I know they’re too close now for me to do anything but surrender. I left it too long. I should have run with Mykel, Samson, and Waverly, but I stayed. I fucking stayed. I did it for my club. For everyone that is relying on me. It’s me or them, and if anyone is going down, it’s not going to be them.

Dax set it all up, the perfect plan.

It’s up to me now to make sure that plan doesn’t play out.

I could run, I could hide, I could find any fucking reason not to be here.

I don’t do any of those things.

I push my shovel into the soft dirt surrounding the body of Constable Bennett, and I wait.

I wait for them to appear.

To arrest me.

I turn, glancing in the direction that my brothers ran into and consider, for a second, that I might have time to run.

Then I think of the implications on the club.

“Do not move.”

I turn slowly and see three cops standing in the darkness, flashlights shining on me. One of those cops is Zariah, a woman I thought the club had come to trust. She could change this around for me, she could tell them I have nothing to do with this, clear everything up. But she doesn’t do that—no, she fucking steps forward, her eyes pleading with me to understand. “You’re under arrest, anything you say or do will be used against you in the court of law. You have the right to an attorney, if you can’t afford one the state will provide one.”

Her voice echoes through the night as the other cop radios in for backup.

I drop the shovel, and I meet her eyes. “Zariah,” I try to say, but she looks away, her face tight.

“Cuff him,” another cop orders.

Zariah steps forward, and in a voice that’s strong and yet so incredibly fucking weak, she tells me to turn around. I do as she asks, and my jaw tightens as she snaps the cuffs on my wrists. My chest tightens with rage, rage that she’s not speaking up, rage that she’s not helping me, rage that she’s letting all of this happen.

“Where’s the rest of them?” a tall, prick of an officer demands as he steps forward and gets up in my face.

“Don’t know what you’re talkin’ about.”

“Know this is the work of your entire club, so where are the fuckin’ rest of them?”

I lean in closer, feeling Zariah’s hands tighten on my arm as she tries to hold me back. “I said,” I hiss. “I don’t fuckin’ know what you’re talking about.”

“You’re here alone, is that what you’re trying to tell me?”

“Does it look like I’m surrounded by people?”

His face tightens.

“You’re standing over the body of a police officer, there are women in the basement, and we know exactly what’s going on here. We also know your club has something to do with it. I’ll ask again, where the hell are they?”

Pushy motherfucker.

“I was workin’ with Dax, I buried this body, and I’m helpin’ him with sellin’ those girls. I have no fuckin’ idea who told you the club had something to do with this, because they didn’t.”

“You’re lyin’ to me,” he growls.

“Fuckin’ prove it, pig,” I snarl.

I’m on the ground in a split second, fists smashing into my face. The officers kick me in the ribs while the other one hits me with his fist over and over again. Blood pools in my mouth and anger bursts forth. I thrash on the ground, trying to fucking get up but nobody comes to help me.

Nobody.

Not even fucking her.

Zariah.

“You think you’re tougher than us now, boy,” the officer snarls, driving his boot into my ribs once more. “Fuckin’ pathetic biker.”

They reach down and haul me up, and my eyes meet Zariah’s. She looks horrified, but not once did she step forward and stop them. Not fucking once. She let them treat me like a fucking dog. Kicking me on the ground like I’m a piece of shit.

“You’ll fuckin’ regret that,” I roar at the cop.

“You think I’m scared of you and your little club, boy?” He laughs. “Fuckin’ bikers. Get him to the car.”

He shoves me at Zariah, and she catches me, holding onto my cuffs as she whispers, “Yes, sir.”

She turns me and we move down the path, the two of us, dead silent.

I’m sure she has plenty to say, but she’s not fucking saying it.

“You could have helped me,” I growl into the darkness. “You could have fuckin’ stopped that.”
Feelings for an angel.

This is a literal battle between good and evil, and I'm living it.

Who are these men, you ask?

You’re just going to have to start from the beginning.

1

WAVERLY

“Waverly!”

I stare into the setting sun. The array of colors drift off into the horizon as slowly, night begins to fall.

“Waverly!”

Am I strong enough for this? I only let the thought flitter through my mind for a second

“Waverly, for fuck’s sake!”

I turn and face Alarick, who is staring at me with an angry expression on his face—an expression that tells me he’s not going to stop hollering my name until I listen, until I pay attention, but I’m finding that incredibly difficult right now. “What, Alarick? Can’t you see a girl was off in her own little world?”

He crosses his arms across his big chest, and then mutters, “What happened last night?”

Oh, the night I didn’t come home.

The night I stayed with Dax and his little crew. The night I met two other girls. The night they slowly started to corrupt our minds. We were like perfect little puppets on their masculine biker strings. Well, they were; I certainly was not. I know exactly the kind of man Dax is. I also know that he’s so clever and so scarily kind to those women that they honestly believe their worlds are about to become a whole lot better.

He takes them from their miserable lives, from their nonexistent families.

He swoops in like prince charming, making them believe they’ve finally found peace. Finally found home.

He introduces them to kind men, rich men—men who promise them homes full of love and money for the rest of their lives.

He sells them.

Then, oh, only then, do those women see the true horror—the true monsters hiding behind the masks.

By then, it’s too late.

They’re already in the hands of the beasts. They’re already owned.

There is no escape.

I shudder and focus my attentions back onto Alarick. He wants answers—of course he does. They all do. My sister, Zariah, has been badgering me all day for some. I haven’t given them to her because, well, I’m not sure she’s the right person to give them to. Alarick, on the other hand? He is the right person. He’s the running this whole operation. This whole attempt to take down Lucifer and all his demons.

I’ve dubbed Dax that—Lucifer.

The king of hell.

Because that’s exactly who he is.

It’s almost funny, really.

He’s like a fallen angel, thrown into the pits of hell. That’s Dax. An angel, by all accounts, but the devil where it really matters.

A trick.

A lie.

“Waverly, you’re zoning out again.”

Shit.

I shake my head and focus on Alarick.

C’mon, Waverly. Fucking focus.

“Sorry, boss.” I give him a wry smile. “My mind is about to burst.”

“Well, burst it on me, yeah? We need to know what happened last night! Everyone was fuckin’ worried about you.”

Of course they were. They thought he’d sold me.

Not yet.

No, we still have time.

He’s still doing all his devilish priming first.

“He took us on a trip to this incredible lake house. It was amazing, to be honest. We got to dance and sing and drink and eat. Those girls, the ones who are truly from a bad world, they thought they’d won the lottery. He introduced them to some men—some very rich, very attractive men. Everyone except me, which I found to be a little strange . . .”

“He didn’t introduce you to a man?” Alarick murmurs, narrowing his eyes.

“No, he didn’t. So I was left talking to him all night. Let me tell you, he knows how to turn on the charm. That man is . . .”
Alarick ‘Flick’ has dealt with an array of things in his life.
His father disappearing. His mother dying. Becoming the President of his club. His world isn’t always easy.
It’s certainly not simple. But he knows how to handle it. There isn’t a single thing he can’t deal with…until now.
Bodies are showing up on his doorstep. People are uncovering lie upon lie. Those he trusts are making him doubt. Danger is lurking every corner.
He’s trapped between wanting to protect those he loves, and wanting to find out the truth. The woman he cares most about in the world is treading on dangerous grounds, and he can do nothing to stop her.
If he doesn’t find a solution soon, more lives will end. The terror will continue.
How the hell is he supposed to fix what’s broken, when he can’t even find the crack? How the hell is he supposed to protect his club, when everything he thought he knew is revealing itself to be a lie?
My ribcage feels like there is no way it’ll be strong enough to hold it. No way it’ll keep me intact. My eyes move over the bloody mess that is the man who raised me, battered and bruised, fingers dripping with blood. He holds my eyes with desperation, a look that pleads with me to understand.

Pleads with me to get it.

“You’re makin’ a mistake, Dad,” I say, my fists clenched by my side. “I’m not fuckin’ ready for this.”

“You are ready,” he growls, his panting suddenly becoming drowned out by the wheezing of his labored breaths. He’s going to pass out soon, I know he is, and when he does, I’m going to have to do the thing I am most afraid of in the world.

Lie to fucking everyone I love.

Lie to the brotherhood that has come to trust me almost as much as him.

“I’m not fuckin’ ready.”

My voice is strained and frustrated. My head is spinning. My life has already been turned upside down, Briella is gone and nothing is making sense to me anymore. Now this. Now him.

“You don’t get a choice,” he growls, then coughs, blood splattering across the sidewalk in front of him. “I’m not givin’ you an option here, Alarick. You’re takin’ over this club, it’s yours now, and you’re goin’ to do what I’m askin’ you to do. This is important to me, more important than you’ll ever begin to understand. I need you to step up.”

“You want me to fuckin’ lie to them all,” I bark, shaking my head in frustration. “You want me to go in there on false grounds and lie. They find out I lied, I’ll never be respected again.”

“Trust me on this, will you, boy?”

I grind my teeth. “You’re not going to give me a choice.”

“I have to do this. Have to fuckin’ do this. You need to understand and respect that. I don’t need you questionin’ me, I just need you to make this real.”

Make it real.

He wants me to make it so fucking real everyone believes it.

He wants me to spin their worlds until they’re so dizzy they don’t look through the gaps and find the lie.

He wants me to walk in there, take over that club, and move on with my life.

A life that will be lived without him.

He wants me to do the unthinkable.

“I have nobody else,” I say, my voice rough and jagged around the edges, much like him.

My father, King, steps forward and puts his hands on my shoulders. He’s crumpled over, he’s exhausted, and if he does manage to live through this, I’m not going to know about it.

“You’re the best fuckin’ thing in my world, Alarick. You and Sissy are goin’ to be just fine without me. I have to find my answers, this is the only way I can do that. I’m in danger, and I’m not goin’ to put the club in danger because of my actions. If I’m gone, they’re goin’ to back off you. If I’m gone, you start again clean.”

“If you’re gone, I’m fuckin’ alone ...”

He leans forward, pressing his head against mine. I can smell the scent of bitter blood wafting over my face, but I don’t move back.

I can’t fucking move back.

“I’m proud of you, boy. I love you. This club is yours, and I know you’re goin’ to do right by it.”

I step back and look at my father, I take him in, and I pray he’ll fucking walk out of this alive.

Then I turn and walk away from him.

I know what I have to do.

He knows what I have to do.

I just don’t know if I can stand here a second longer.

“I love you, my boy,” he calls out, and then I hear him cough again.

So forcefully I wonder if I turn back, he’ll actually be dead.

On the ground, drowning in his own blood.

I don’t look back.

I put one foot in front of the other and keep walking forward.

I’ll walk all the way into the club and tell them the lie.

The lie that’ll change everything.

I’m going to tell them King is dead.

I’m going to tell them that, I, Alarick, will be the new president.

I’m going to lie to every single one of them.

And pray they never find out.

1

BRIELLA

It has been four weeks since I got Rupert removed from my brain.

Four, long, frustrating weeks.

You could say I’m irritated because for the first two weeks, I couldn’t do anything, and then for the last two weeks, all I could do was think about King. My mind has been a scramble ever since the night he came into the hospital. I’ve wanted to ask so many questions, but he asked me not to tell anyone, so that’s exactly what I’ve done.
FROM USA TODAY BESTSELLING AUTHOR COMES A BRAND NEW BIKER SERIES!!
Briella’s life has never been perfect, but she’s always been exactly where she wanted to be. When her mother marries into the King’s Descendants Motorcycle Club, everything she thought she knew is about to change. A world she didn’t even know existed is going to consume her.
Her new step brother and friend, Alarick, is the only thing that keeps her sane as she begins to learn that the life she knew and trusted, and the life she’s now living, are two very different things. As she discovers the club, and all the dangers it holds, she finds herself tangled in a world she can’t even begin to comprehend.
It’s dangerous. It scares her. He’s dangerous. He scares her. Their love will become toxic. Their hearts will become entangled. Everything about him will make her question herself.
When tragedy strikes, Briella knows she needs to run. Needing freedom and time away from the pain more than she needs anything else, she leaves her family behind, she leaves him behind, and starts her life anew. However, like all good things, an end is in sight to her new found freedom and she’s forced to go back home to the place she vowed never to return.
A place where Alarick is now President. A place where her sister is now missing. A place where so much pain hides in the darkest of corners. A place where secrets and lies fill all the broken gaps and happiness is a deadly trap. A place where he does not want her.
Briella will return with her own secrets.
She will have to face the man she ran from. She will discover everything she thought she knew was a lie. She will enter a world that is so much darker than she remembers. She will go back to where it all began, to the King’s Descendants Motorcycle Club.

I stare at Dr. Peterson who is looking at me from over the top of his glasses, his head tipped forward, his expression kind. He’s tall, with greying hair and gentle brown eyes. He’s always wearing the same lab coat with the same coffee stain, and yet it makes you feel like you know him just a little better. If you could pick a doctor, it would be him. He makes you feel like you’re going to be okay, like everything in the world isn’t as scary as it seems when you’re sitting in his office receiving bad news.

Do they teach that in medical school?

How to make people feel like their world isn’t crumbling around them when they receive bad news?

I bet they do.

I bet he aced that class, because without him I never would have handled the news he dealt to me only a week earlier.

“I’m okay,” I tell him. “To be honest, I feel ... normal. I mean, I get headaches but nothing that is any different to my usual ones.”

He nods, writing something down on his laptop before looking back at me. “That’s all normal for this stage, but as your tumor grows, those headaches will get worse. You may also experience numbness, paralysis in one side, vision loss, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting, just to name a few.”

“Wow,” I murmur. “Hit me right with the ugly details, Doc.”

He chuckles. “It’s my job, I’m afraid. Are you getting any sleep?”

I shrug and nod. “Yeah, I am sleeping well. Like I said, right now, I feel normal. Like there is nothing going on inside me, you know? If I didn’t come in here and get all those tests, I’d probably think I just had a virus that was causing more headaches than normal. Is that how this is supposed to feel?”

He nods. “For a while, yes. A lot of people have these things and don’t know, but you found yours early enough that you shouldn’t have any long-term damage from it. Provided you follow my advice and have it removed as soon as possible. The longer you leave it, the worse it’ll get, and you’ll be putting your life at risk.”

Right.

My life.

Nothing major.

Exhale.

“Again with the hitting me with the horrible truth.”

He smiles, warmly. He does that a lot. Like he thinks my sarcastic personality is enjoyable. I cross my arms and lean back in the chair, staring out the window at the blue sky that we haven’t seen for quite a few days now.

Rain always finds a way of showing up when you don’t want it. Like a dark cloud that drags you down.

God.

I’m making myself crazier, I swear.

“Have you spoken to your family about this yet?”

I snort, softly, so it’s still lady like. “No. My mom is dead.”

He blinks, shocked. “She’s dead?”

“Yes, dead. Gone. I lost her five years ago. My father died when I was just a baby.”

“Do you have siblings?”

“A sister, and two step siblings,” I mumble.

“Are you close with any of them?”

I exhale, crossing my arms. “I am with my sister, when she’s not driving me crazy. The other two, once, yeah. We were close. Not so much anymore. When my mom died, I just ... I didn’t deal. I stayed with them and I just felt so broken. Things went bad, I suppose, it’s a long story. I ran one day, it just, got too much and I haven’t spoken to them since. But, you’ll be glad to hear I’m going home. I kind of have to. My sister is ... in some trouble and well, I want to sort that out before I get this surgery.”

“I wouldn’t recommend waiting long, Briella. Your symptoms will only proceed to get worse, and, as I said ...”

“Yeah, my life, I get it. But, if I don’t go and fix this, and something goes wrong in my surgery, she’s going to be left with nobody. I’m all she has left. I’ll go, I won’t be long, and I’ll break the news when I’m there.”

He nods. “I’d like you to keep in contact, find a doctor there so I’m able to keep your blood work and scans up to date. You can’t go without getting checks. If anything, and I mean anything, starts to get worse, you need to come back immediately. Please understand that this is dangerous, and it could change at any moment.”

“I know,” I say softly. “I know that.”

“I’ll be ready for you when you return.”

I sigh. “Doc?” I ask, standing and gathering a bunch of scripts he’s given me, mostly for pain relief.

“Yeah?”

“The surgery, it’s dangerous, right?”

He looks to me, and then stands and slides his glasses off. “It is. The tumor is located on a difficult part of the brain, but not impossible. There are a lot of risks, but it is growing and if we don’t go in and remove it, or at least try, it’ll eventually paralyze you, or worse ...”
