I'm about to break the biggest rule of all.
RUGER
I was sixteen when she was born. The niece of my best friend. An angel with bright blue eyes and hair the color of night.
Through the years I’ve seen her grow from an adorable dimpled cupid into a strong, independent beauty.
Into a goddess. A temptress. Fate has brought us together. But she is off limits. I’ve got no business wanting her. No business at all.
CHASTITY
For years I’ve crushed on him. An older man who makes me tremble. A biker King whose arms I want to get lost in. Whose body I can only dream about touching. Whose lips I’m dying to taste. I shouldn’t want him. But I do.
I shouldn’t lust after him. But tell that to my poor hopeless heart. I should stay away. But I won’t. Off Limits is book five in the Kings of Mayhem MC series. It can be read as a standalone.

Chastity 6 / Ruger 22

I dug the chalk into the concrete and concentrated hard on drawing the picture properly. I liked drawing on the driveway because it was so big, like a giant piece of paper. Drawing was my favorite thing to do in the whole world. Caleb said I was a good drawer, but Chance and Cade still teased me a lot, saying my pictures look like sticks and drunken rainbows.

Whatever.

Stupid brothers.

I changed my chalk, picking up a pink one to draw the nose and a yellow one for the whiskers.

I was drawing our cat Carburetor. He was a ginger cat with big paws and he loved me the best. For some reason he didn’t like my dad. But that’s probably because my dad wouldn’t let him sleep on the end of the bed like I did… and because my dad could be a little scary sometimes.

When the screen door opened, I looked over my shoulder and saw a man step out onto the porch and light a cigarette. It was Ruger. He was a friend of my Uncle Bull’s. Today we went to church and watched his sister get buried and it was really sad because she was so young, and everyone was saying how terrible it was for someone so young to be taken so soon. She died last week when a car smashed into hers.

She was married to my Uncle Bull and now everyone says he is broken-hearted.

I watched Ruger step off the porch before I turned back to my drawing. Uncle Bull cried a lot when her coffin went into the ground. I had never seen him cry before and it really scared me. He was always so happy and kind. Always smiling, even if he had to wear those dark glasses all the time because he had something wrong with his eyes. They are a weird blue. Bright and light like there was a lamp on inside of them.

He loved Wendy.

That was her name.

She was young and pretty, and she was real nice, too.

But she was dead now.

“Whatcha doing, kiddo?” Ruger asked.

I looked up at him. He was standing next to me, looking down at my chalk drawings on the concrete. His long hair hung down past his shoulders and he had a bit of hair on his face. I liked Ruger. He had nice green eyes. They were kind and sparkled like shiny green stones.

“Drawing,” I said, turning back to my picture.

“It’s good.”

I looked up at him.

“My brothers say I can’t draw.”

He raised his eyebrows. “They do?”

I nodded. “They say my pictures look like sticks and they can’t figure out what they are.”

“Well, now, that seems like a mighty unfair thing to say,” he said, taking a draw on his cigarette. “I, myself, do not think they look like sticks. In fact, I think what we have here is some pretty amazing artwork.”

Ruger spoke funny. He and Wendy came from a town far away from here—so far away it was in the very next state over from Mississippi, which I learned at school is called Louisiana.

I liked the way he talked.

“Really?” I asked, unsure. Ruger was nice. Kind. He was the same age as my eldest brother Chance. I had three of them. Brothers, that is. And they were all way older than me. So I knew when someone was pulling my leg. I squinted up at him. “What do you think it is?”

“That there picture?” He pointed at it with his cigarette burning between his fingers. “Oh, I know what it is… that there is some well-drawn, well-thought out—”

“Miss Chastity Ramona Calley, look at all that chalk all over your dress!”

Before Ruger could finish, my mom came storming down the driveway toward us. I looked down at the front of my dress and it was covered in pink and yellow chalk from where I had wiped my hands on it. There was also chalk all over my knees.

“It’s okay, Mama, I’m creating artwork.”

I didn’t really know what that meant, but Ruger had said it and I liked the way it sounded.

“Don’t sass your mama, child,” my mom said as she walked over to us. She took the cigarette from Ruger and puffed on it before handing it back. My mom was real pretty. The kind of pretty you saw on the girls in the magazines at Miss Tolliver’s Hair Salon in town. She had long black hair like a raven’s wing, and eyes like the bright blue sky. She was kind but could be mad if us kids misbehaved. “Now get inside, your uncle will be leaving soon and you need to say goodbye.”

I whined. “Can’t I have five more minutes so I can finish my picture, Mama?”

I gave her my best pleading eyes.

Well, that’s what Chance called them.

And they worked too because my mama shook her head and gave me a half-smile. “Suppose another five minutes won’t hurt none. You already gone and got chalk all over it, I s’pose there’s no harm in a little more. Just don’t you be talking the ear off Ruger now. It’s been a hard day for your uncle for sure, but Ruger, as well. I’m sure he’s feeling broken-hearted right now and just needs some quiet.”
BULL
I lost my wife on a rainy night almost two decades ago. Since then, my heart has been a barren wasteland. It only knows love for family and the club. And for revenge.
Then I meet Taylor and I know I’m doomed. Because she’s everything I didn’t know I wanted. Everything I’ve denied myself for years. But my club is about to storm headfirst into a war and I can’t afford the distraction.
Yet I can’t get her out of my head. We both say we’re not interested. But we are both liars.
TAYLOR
For years we’ve been running from my past. My kid brother and me. Hiding in the shadows. Now we have a chance for a new life in a new town … far, far away from trouble. I crave freedom and a quiet, simple life for us both. The last thing I expect is to fall for the enigmatic biker king, Michael “Bull” Western.
He is magnificent. White-hot and scorching. With the touch of an angel and eyes of the devil. He could be the love of my life. But I have a secret. A very big secret indeed …
Bull is book six in the Kings of Mayhem MC series. For mature readers 18+.

Eighteen Years Ago

My wife was going to kill me. I was due home more than an hour ago and I was only now walking out the door. I know she’s cooked me dinner, because today she found out the sex of our baby and instead of telling me over the phone, she wanted to tell me face to face. And in typical Wendy style, she was going to make it a big deal. Because in reality, it was a big damn deal.

We were having a baby and I was beyond excited.

My cell phone rang.

Speak of the devil.

Wendy.

My gorgeous wife of three months.

The woman I couldn’t get enough of.

The woman now four months pregnant with my baby.

I flicked open my phone. “Hey, babe.”

“Please tell me you’re on your way home.”

“I’m out the door. I promise.”

“Good, because dinner is almost ready and I want to celebratory-fuck my husband before we eat. So, you need to get your sexy ass home now.”

I grinned. What my wife wanted, my wife would get. “Yes, ma’am.”

“Did you get the wine?”

Fuck.

Her doctor told her she was allowed one glass of wine to celebrate. And in Wendy’s words, she wanted to make it count with a bottle of Stags’ Leap Viognier. It was her favorite. The same bottle we drank the night I asked her to marry me. Unfortunately, there was only one liquor store in town that sold it, and it was in the opposite direction of the clubhouse.

“I’ll get it on the way home.”

She growled but she wasn’t angry. “The liquor store is in the opposite direction. I’ll go. You just get your sexy ass home. I want you naked and ready when I get back.”

It started to rain as I pulled out of the clubhouse parking lot. My Harley was being painted, so I was driving the club’s van for the next two days. It was rush-hour traffic, and as my headlights cut into the late afternoon gloom, I made my way out of town toward the watermelon fields where Wendy and I lived in a renovated, sixties bungalow. Out here the traffic was lighter, but as I approached the water tower on the edge of town, the traffic crawled to a stop.

It was raining hard now. Impatiently, I tapped the steering wheel. It had been almost an hour since I’d told Wendy I’d be home. I took off my dark glasses to peer through the windshield. I had a rare form of color blindness. One that doesn’t tolerate light. So, I had to wear dark glasses nearly all the time. It’s also given me eyes the color of arctic ice. As a kid, I used to scare all the other kids with my unholy demon eyes. And as an adult, things weren’t much different. You can see the dread on people’s faces when I remove my glasses and they see my otherworldly irises. Oddly enough, it scares the men, but it attracts the ladies.

I wiped the fog from the windshield. Up ahead, red and blue lights cut into the bad weather. This stretch of road was notorious for accidents. Especially when it rained. And by the look of this one, we were going to be stuck for a while.

I reached for my phone and tried ringing Wendy to tell her I’d be late, but it went to voicemail. A second call did the same.

An ambulance raced past me on the side of the road, followed by a patrol car.

Slowly the minutes ticked by. I continued to thumb the steering wheel, knowing I was letting my wife down.

Again.

I’m working on it, baby. Don’t give up on me. I love you so damn much.

The rain slowed to a gentle sprinkling, and as we inched toward the wreckage, I peered through the windshield to get a better look.

Two cars had collided head on. One had crossed onto the wrong side of the road and had a blanket covering the windshield. The driver obviously dead.

But the other car…

The one it had run into.

It took a moment to register.

The crumpled wreckage.

The license plate.

The shock of blonde hair trailing out the open window.

The blood.

Dread washed over me.

Wendy.

I ripped open the door.

Wendy.

My feet barely touched the ground.

Wendy.

My legs struggled to keep up with my desperation to reach her. I ran toward the wreck, pushing past people and calling her name. A police officer tried to stop me, but I shoved him out of the way. I could see Wendy trapped inside. Her eyes were open, her brow pulled in with pain. She’s alive. Dear God, thank you. A paramedic was treating her through the smashed-out window. I launched at the broken remains of her car and dropped to my knees. Recognition lit up in her eyes.

“Baby, I’m here. I’m here.”

Her eyes focused on me. And she smiled softly. “Michael…”

I reached for her hand.
CADE
I’ve loved her since we were five years old. We grew up side by side. Two kids tied together by the Kings of Mayhem Motorcycle Club.
But I broke us. I broke her. So, she fled. Now she’s back after twelve long years.
And I’m going to show her all the reasons why we should be together and make her forget all the reasons why we shouldn’t.
INDY
I’m back in town but only because I have to be. I’m here to help my mom bury my father. And the sooner we get it done, the better.
Because I want to see Cade as much as I want a hole in the head. He broke me once—no, he broke my everything— and I’ll be damned if I’ll let him do it again.
Get in and get out. That is the plan. But you know what they say about best-laid plans.
The entire room was quiet except for the occasional sob from Leslie Winters a few desks away.

“Ssssh,” Brody Meyers, the school star quarterback hissed. “Or you’ll get us all killed.”

He was crouched awkwardly beneath a science table, his body shaking as he clutched onto one of the table legs.

Across the aisle, Leslie sobbed again but this time it was silent and she dropped her head to her chest as another round of terror wracked her body.

I watched them, wishing they’d both shut the fuck up before they got us killed.

My eyes shifted to Indy crouching beside me. She was biting her bottom lip and her eyes were filled with fear. I’d known her my entire life and I had never seen fear in those beautiful eyes of hers. Indigo Parrish wasn’t someone who scared easily. But right now her big brown eyes were gleaming with it and I knew I had to do something about it.

I leaned forward and mashed my lips to hers. Her eyes widened when I pulled away and began backing out from under the safety of the desk.

“Cade, no …!” She pleaded. But it was just a whisper, because somewhere out in that hallway, Travis Hawthorne was on the hunt for blood, and if he heard us he would come and kill us all. We knew he was strapping some serious firepower with the sole intention of taking out as many of us as possible.

I gave my girl the cocky, lopsided grin I knew she loved. The one she spent hours kissing because she was so damn in love with me. It was my way of silently comforting her. Of letting her know that I would always protect her. I had loved her my whole life. Ever since we were little and she used to climb into my bedroom window and slip into my bed because her parents were fighting again and she needed to escape. We were neighbors. Our parents were friends. We were club kids. She was the love of my life.

“I’ll be back,” I whispered with a wink.

I snuck across the room and paused at the door, my heart thundering in my chest.

“Cade, get down!” Our chem teacher, Mr Lemon, hissed. “Get the hell down now before you get shot!”

I ignored him and said a silent prayer as I opened the classroom door. I swallowed deep. The hallway wasn’t empty. Travis Hawthorne was only a few feet away, stalking the corridor like a hunter stalking his prey. His back was to me but he swung around when he heard the quiet click of the door behind me. His face was dark and sinister. His eyes bright and crazy. He was clearly surprised to see me, and for a moment we just stared at one another and all I could hear was the pounding of my heartbeat in my ears.

Travis was brandishing a 12-gauge shotgun, which he aimed right at my chest.

Standing there I figured this could go one of two ways: Travis Hawthorne could shoot and kill me—which would set off a world of trouble for the Hawthorne family. Or, I could use my greatest weapon—my ability to talk myself out of most situations—and we would both live to tell the story.

I held my hands up in surrender.

“Dude, you don’t want to shoot me,” I said. Not the smartest of one-liners, but it was the first thing that came to mind.

Clearly, I hadn’t thought this through.

“What are you doing?” Travis’s eyes narrowed as he came toward me, walking with the determination of an approaching soldier. A yard away from me he stopped and yelled, “What the fuck are you doing, Cade?”

It was a good question. All I knew is that I had my girl to protect.

“I hate to say it, Travis, but you know who my family is—this isn’t the first time I’ve had a loaded 12-gauge pointed at me.”

Up this close, I could see the crazy in his eyes. Yep. Chances were this wasn’t going to end well.

“You are a cocky son of a bitch,” he snarled.

“Probably.”

I nodded and he aimed his gun higher, taking it from my chest to my face.

“What makes you so fucking sure that I won’t shoot you?”

I thought for a moment, my mind racing, but I was calm as I asked, “Do you love your mom?”

Not expecting the question, he looked confused. Then he frowned. “What?”

“I said, do you love your mom?” I tried to keep my voice steady, but my heart was going like a racecar in my chest. “Your sister? What’s her name? Eve? The pretty little thing with the long blonde hair…”

His eyes narrowed. “What the fuck are you talking about, Cade? Don’t you talk about my mom!” He jabbed the business end of the 12-gauge shotgun closer to my face as he yelled. “And don’t you talk about my sister like that! What are you doing?”
I’ve spent years running from my past. Town to town. State to state. Never putting down roots. Because I am running from the Devil himself and if he finds me he will drag me down to hell again.
Then I meet a beautiful, scarred beast of man who makes me feel something for the first time of my life...hope. He makes me want to stay but thats an impossibility.
Her breasts, ample and full, were pressed up against my pecs, her long legs entangled in mine as she stirred against me. A hand slid down from my shoulder, over my chest and across the dips and grooves of my stomach, moving lower and lower. My body responded in all the usual ways it did when a beautiful woman curls her fingers around your morning wood.

Lips parted, my breathing picked up speed. My eyes fluttered and slowly opened as she gently began to rub me, her palm gliding up the length of me, her fingers paying special attention to the wide, smooth head of my cock. I breathed out a moan, feeling the pleasure stir in my balls. As my brain started to function, I reached for her slowly, my body already minutes ahead and wanting more. I pulled her down to me and kissed her hard, enjoying her whimpered moan of pleasure in my mouth.

She rose, her warm body hovering over me, nipples hardening against my chest as she positioned herself onto me. Her kisses were sweet and hot, her tongue filling my mouth as her body came alive against mine.

As she sank down on my cock, I was lost to her while she rode me slowly, her slim hips rocking against me, her firm thighs straddling me, her pussy milking me. But it was more than that. These physical feelings, the ones that had been so hard to deny at first, now took a back seat to what was growing between us. What had already grown between us. I could love this woman. Give her my all. Take her back to my home in the US. To my life before here. To my family.

“Oh, Chance,” she whimpered my name as she started to come. Her head fell back, her long, dark hair swirling over her smooth, sun-kissed shoulders as she lost herself to the orgasm.

I followed quickly, exploding inside her. Pulsing. Filling her. And when the pleasure receded and the euphoric haze descended upon us, she collapsed against me, her gloriously smooth body blanketing me.

I closed my eyes, my heart slowing, my breathing evening out as my post orgasm bliss settled into me.

“It’s almost dawn,” she finally said, her sexy voice hoarse and sleepy. “I need to go before someone sees me.”

I hated that she had to leave before anyone realized she was here. Hated that we had to move around in the shadows because of who she was and who I was. Two people divided by war. She was born here. I was a soldier on a classified mission. We’d tried to deny our feelings. Tried to ignore the attraction pulling us closer and closer every time I walked past her family’s little restaurant on the far side of the village. We met in the darkness of the alley. Stolen moments of whispered conversations and longing-filled kisses.

“Wait.” I didn’t know what I wanted to say, only that I wasn’t ready for her to leave. When she turned back and smiled down at me, I reached up and cupped her beautiful, sweet face. I could fall for this girl. See a future with her. Make her mine. Every goodbye was getting harder. “Will I see you tonight?”

Her dark eyes gleamed with the mystery I’d come to love about her. “I will try.”

It was her standard response, something I’d come to expect every morning when we said our goodbyes in the cool pre-dawn light. Sometimes she would show up and we would spend the night in each other’s arms, drinking wine and making love with wild abandonment. I’d spend other nights alone in my small, one-bedroom dwelling just off the dusty main street of the little village, missing home, missing my family, missing the familiar sights and sounds of a life half a world away.

I ran the back of my fingers down her arm. Her skin was smooth, golden, and perfect. She glanced back at me again.

“I want to meet your friends,” she said.

“You’ve met my friends … when we come for dinner.”

Her father owned the small restaurant my unit frequented. He loved Americans and would fuss over us with enthusiastic delight whenever we visited his establishment for a meal and a night where we could forget we were in the throes of war.

“But I want to meet them as your girl.” She raised her chin slightly. “I don’t want to sneak around anymore.”

“I don’t like it either, but we need to wait until my unit is reassigned somewhere else. And then we’ll tell your father.” I sat up and pulled her hand into mine. “Then we can be together.”

Until then I couldn’t afford for anyone to know about us.

It was too dangerous. While this village was considered safe, there were eyes and ears everywhere. Some people who didn’t want us here and she could easily become a target. I couldn’t risk her getting hurt. This was war.
Honey Scott
Finding out your boyfriend is a cheating loser is a real buzz kill. Finding out you’re actually the other woman, is devastating. Call it temporary insanity, but I decide the best way to get over the loser I’d dated for two years is to get under a biker with tattoos, dimples and a hard body he knows how to use.
He’s going to make everything better with numerous mind-blowing orgasms. But just for one night. Except one faulty condom means my one-night stand isn’t so one-night after all.
Caleb Calley
After a night of insane sex, the beautiful blue-eyed brunette gave me the slip. And even with all the women on offer afterwards, I can’t get her off my mind. So when she turns up at the Kings of Mayhem MC compound I’m quick to give her a second night of amazing sex and crazy orgasms. But this time, I’m not ready to let her go.
There’s just one problem— she’s not interested. But if she thinks she’s going to give me the slip again, then she’s got another thing coming. I know she is keeping a secret from me but I don’t care what it is. I want her and I’m going to make her mine.

And when I say huge, I mean, approximately ten inches’ worth of mistake.

But after the week I’d had, it was just what I needed. A night of big bad mistakes with a big bad cock.

I focused on the mouth moving sensually over mine. The way this guy kissed had me pulsing in places I hadn’t pulsed in months.

“What’s your name again?” The guy with the tattoos and all those muscles asked between kisses.

“Let’s just keep that to ourselves,” I said, drawing his mouth to mine again and kissing him hard. “It adds to the mystery, don’t you think?”

We tumbled through the door to the motel room we had just paid for. The guy behind the counter had hardly batted an eye at us when he took down our details. And I shouldn’t be surprised. This place probably rented rooms by the hour.

We fell into the room, and the man who was kissing me into nirvana kicked the door closed behind us and pressed me up against the wall.

He pulled away briefly and his eyes rolled over me, they were full of heat. “You’re so fucking hot.”

I grinned and tugged at his belt buckle. “You’re not so bad yourself.”

When my hand brushed over the hardness punching against his zipper, I gasped. My hand went in for a second look. Holy hell. This guy was packing a giant erection.

An unfamiliar thrill ran through me.

This guy was something else. He had muscles for miles and the type of height that commanded everyone’s attention.

I dropped to my knees and peeled his jeans down to reveal the biggest cock I’d ever seen in my life. I looked up at him, unsure how I was going to fit all of him in my mouth. He grinned down at me, but it faded into a look of pure molten heat as I took him in my hand and ran my tongue along the length of him and across the shiny, throbbing head. My mouth closed over him and my tongue tortured the wide crest, licking at it, sucking it, curling and swirling around the sensitive skin at the base of the head. He groaned and it was primal. Virile. Pure man. His hands tangled in my hair and his knees weakened. As his arousal started to peak, his cock began to dip and lift against my lips.

One big arm guided me to my feet and he cupped my face in his hands. “When I come, I’m going to come inside you.”

He pulled my face to his, and with a groan, kissed me hard. He moved me across to the bed where he peeled every item of clothing from my body, savoring the experience by removing them slowly and kissing every area of exposed flesh. My head spun and my body clenched with every purposeful lick and touch of his lips against my skin. He lay me down and crawled over me, his hard body covering me in heat and rock-hard muscle. I’m not sure when he took his jeans off, I was too lost in sensation, too lost in the feel of his tongue on my skin and the deep moans of appreciation escaping him as he slowly worked my body into a fever.

I was drowning in desire when he reached for the condom in his wallet. And I could barely breathe as he ripped the foil package open and rolled the sheath of latex over his very hard, very big cock.

He crawled back over me, and the heat on his face and the vibrant need in his eyes made me forget to breathe. With one long, hard push he was inside me, and the sudden intrusion sent fireworks zip-zapping through me. His size opened me, stretched me, and he thrust into me with a physical prowess I’d never known, hitting every delicious spot inside of me. He was a lot of man to take. He was big, with broad shoulders and huge biceps, and just the sensation of all that muscle on top of me was enough to send pleasure soaring throughout my body. What he did with his mouth, his tongue, his body, it made me crazy.

My orgasm was swift, its ferocity overwhelming me completely. My eyes closed and I clutched his massive shoulders as I cried out again and again, utterly lost in ecstasy. He thrust my arms above my head, grinding hard into me to draw out the pleasure spiraling out from where our bodies connected.

“That was amazing,” I gasped, floating on the dizzying heights of my afterglow.

He smiled against my lips as I panted against him. “You think that was amazing? Baby, I’ve only just started.”

With a deep thrust of his hips, he made me cry out again and again as he drove my body toward more delicious orgasms. He was relentless. Powerful. He knew how to use his cock, and he wasn’t afraid to show me.

I know it changed me.

When Isaac died, my heart hardened.

My anger was palpable.

As I watched them remove his lifeless body from the pool of his blood, I vowed revenge. Fury thundered through my veins. Life changed in a heartbeat, and every part of my being could feel it. Rage tore through me, spiraling into every nerve and fiber, every muscle, every tendon, every shard of my shattered heart. Pain ripped at my guts and opened me up. But it was nothing, nothing, like my need for retribution.

Bull and Caleb showed up. God knows who called them.

Despite Indy’s protests, I sent her home in the safety of a police cruiser while I followed Buckman and the ambulance to the county morgue. I didn’t know why, but I needed answers, and for some reason, I felt they were with Isaac’s body.

Isaac’s body.

My chest caved in under the weight of my grief.

“You can’t be here,” Buckman said as I bounded the steps of the county morgue.

“Try stopping me.”

He pressed a hand into my chest to stop me from going inside. His old brown eyes sought out mine. “Don’t make me arrest you, son.”

I expelled a deep breath of air. “Isaac is in there…”

“I know.” Buckman stepped in front of the doorway. “And you need to let us do our job, Cade. Let Zachariah take care of him.”

Zachariah Sumstad was the county medical examiner.

I sucked in a deep breath and looked away. My grief was dizzying. My head spun. I wanted to rip someone’s head off to somehow release the growing agony inside of me. I wanted to find out who did this to Isaac and choke the hell out of them and watch the life drain from their eyes.

I inhaled deeply, the muscles in my jaw clenching. “You find out who did this. And you let me know.” My voice was low, dangerous, and dripping with a barely controlled rage.

Buckman nodded. “As is protocol.”

I leaned in. “No. I want this guy.”

“I can’t do that, Cade.”

“Then I’ll just make sure it happens. You won’t be able to protect him.”

Buckman put a hand on my shoulder. “One step at a time, son.”

I turned and stormed down the steps to my bike. Then, gunning the engine, roared off into the morning.

I was going to find out who killed Isaac.

CADE

You can see the moment when someone realizes their life is never going to be the same. It’s almost as if you can see the cogs working behind their eyes as they try to make sense of what they’ve just heard. What does this mean for me? How will life be from this moment on? When I pulled up to Cherry and Isaac’s little house just out of town, Buckman was already knocking on her door.

I roared up the driveway and came to a quick halt.

Cherry answered the door and took one look at Buckman, with his hat against his chest, as he said the words that would change her life forever.

Isaac was dead.

I ran across the lawn toward her. I saw her frown. Saw her shake her head as if to say, no, you’re wrong. Saw her knees go weak and the dazed look on her face as she fell against the door.

I climbed the porch steps two at a time, brushed past Buckman and wrapped my arms around her.

“It’s not true,” she said desperately. “Tell him, Cade. Tell him he’s wrong.”

I held her tightly against my chest. “I’m so sorry, Cherry.”

She pushed me away. “Not you, too. Why are you both saying this? He’s alive.”

She fled to the kitchen and picked up her cell phone from the countertop, her fingers shaking as she dialed Isaac’s number.

“He was picking up pie for me,” she said desperately, ending the call when nobody answered, then quickly redialing. Somewhere in the blurry depths of my mind I could see Isaac’s phone ringing unanswered in the county morgue, covered in his blood. “He’s coming home to fix the water pump. I’m making him chili for dinner.” Her whole body trembled and tears flowed down her cheeks as her thoughts frantically bounced all over the place. Her body already knew he was gone but there was still a tiny shred in her mind that refused to believe it. “He likes the way I make his chili. I use the peppers from the garden.”

I crossed the room and gently took the phone from her, then pulled her into my arms again. There was no need for words. Her mind let go of the last scrap of hope and the terrible acceptance sank in. She weakened against me and slowly collapsed to the floor.

“Her sister Ashlee lives three doors down,” I said to Buckman. “You better go get her.”

When Buckman left, I guided Cherry to her feet and led her over to the couch.
