I knew a relationship with Cauldron wouldn't be easy.

But I underestimated just how challenging it would be.

How can you love someone that refuses to love you back?

How can you love someone that betrays you not once, but twice?

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

ELISE

When I walked in the door, I almost didn’t recognize him.

His plump face was black and purple, and there were dried cuts on his skin. His nose looked out of place, like someone had cracked the bone and pushed it to the left.

He turned in his chair to regard me. “It’s as bad as it looks.”

I took the seat beside him and let my eyes roam over his face. “Did Kyle do this to you…?”

He gave a sigh. “I warned you.”

“Jerome, I’m so sorry…” At the end of the day, I had rights. If I didn’t want to sleep with someone, I didn’t have to. This type of retribution was totally unnecessary.

“Grave is paying us extra, so I guess that makes it worth it.” He grabbed the envelope and handed it to me.

I let it hang in the air between us, too guilty to take it. “You think that’s the end of Kyle?”

“I don’t know,” he said with a sigh. “There’s not much left to say.”

I took the envelope of cash and stuffed it into my pocket.

“He’ll get over it eventually. The second he sees some other hot thang, he’ll forget all about you.”

“I hope so.”

“So, what is it with Grave?”

“What do you mean?”

“Is this the beginning of your retirement?”

I held his gaze while I experienced all those flashbacks. “I’m not sure. All I know is, I don’t want to fuck another client when I already have a client I like. Get paid to do what you love, and you never work again, right?”

“What’s different about Grave than the other ones? He’s a good-looking guy, but he’s not the only one.”

“I don’t know… Not sure I can explain it.”

Jerome studied me for a while. “Well, let me know when you’re ready for another client. For now, I’ll just keep collecting the payments.”

I had just stepped outside when I came face-to-face with the man I didn’t want to see.

In a three-piece suit with the glint of arrogance in his eyes, he didn’t seem surprised to see me. As if one of his men had informed him of my arrival at the bar so he could run down here to face me.

I knew this encounter was inevitable, so I held my stance and faced him with a straight spine.

His eyes swept across my face as he took in my appearance. “I’m sorry about Jerome.”

“No, you aren’t.” I stepped around and moved to the street where a car was waiting.

Of course, he chased after me. “We had a deal, Elise.”

“Deals come and go. Get over it.” I opened the back door.

He slammed his hand on the door and forced it shut. He crowded into me, coming so close his body nearly touched mine. “I’ll pay double his rate.”

“It’s not about the money, Kyle.”

“Then what is it about? He’s good in bed? Give me a try.”

“Get your fucking hand off the door.”

He leaned his entire body up against it instead. “Elise, come on.”

“Just let it go. I’m not the only beautiful woman on the market.”

“But you’re the most beautiful—and don’t pretend you don’t know that.”

I narrowed my eyes in annoyance. “I’m not worth this crusade, Kyle. I think you just want what you can’t have—and that’s very childish.” I shoved him hard in the chest so I could free up the back door. “Now leave me the fuck alone.”

I pulled up outside Grave’s building. Can I come up?

You don’t need to ask, sweetheart.

My altercation with Kyle melted off my body the second I read that. I entered his building then took the elevator to the top floor. When the doors opened and I entered the parlor, Grave was already there waiting for me. It was late in the evening, so he was in nothing but his low-rise sweatpants, his powerful chest a living slab of concrete.

I thought I’d never see this place again.

I hung my coat on the rack, one of the pockets stuffed with the envelope of cash. Then I turned into him, surrounded by his warmth immediately. My cheek rested against the hardest pillow I’d ever felt, and I sank into it.

Big arms surrounded me and pulled me close, his lips resting on the top of my head.

I could stay like that forever.

He held me like that for nearly a minute before he pulled away. “Hungry?”

“No.”

“Thirsty?”

“No.”

He stared down at me for a few seconds, and then that playful smirk emerged. “Straight down to business, then.”

My arm hooked through his, and we headed to his bedroom. The fire in the hearth had already heated the room, casting shadows along the walls, and filling the room with popping noises that made me think of camping as a kid.

With his back turned to me, he dropped his sweatpants and his boxers, showing his muscular ass before he walked to the bed. He got on top, leaned against the pile of pillows at the headboard, and stretched out his arms across the bed. “Get to it.”
I was so happy when I escaped his grasp and found Cauldron, and I could hardly believe that I regretted that decision. Grave was a fucking walk in the park compared to this asshole.

I tried to escape a few times, creeping through the house to the front door, but now Hugo locked my bedroom at night, so I was stuck there until morning. My phone was taken away so I couldn’t call for help. Couldn’t figure out if Grave was still alive.

My only way out of there was the patio. I was three stories off the ground, and a fall would probably break a leg and an arm, might even kill me, but it was my only way out at this point. Cauldron and I hadn’t set eyes on each other since our conversation after the yacht party, and perhaps he hoped distance would make my heart grow fonder.

Not a chance.

I took all the sheets off my bed, even my pillowcases, and knotted the corners to make a rope. I tied one end to the bars that wrapped around the outside of the patio and gave it a couple tugs with my hands. When I looked over the edge, I saw a couple pots of flowers and the cobblestone path that wrapped around the property. If I jumped down and the sheets came apart…that would be a nasty fall.

Real nasty.

“Maybe I should think this through…” I stared at the ground for a while before a brilliant idea sprang into my mind. I returned to the bedroom and pulled the mattress off the top of the bed and pushed it onto the balcony. Anyone directly below me could probably hear all the ruckus I was making, but there seemed to be no one there. Otherwise, they’d have come running by now.

I tipped the mattress over the edge and tried to aim it as best as I could before it slipped and fell forty feet below. For something so soft, it made a distinct thud when it struck the ground. I sucked in a breath between my closed teeth and listened, hoping no one had heard that.

It was as silent as ever. “Phew.”

I tugged on the sheets again before I climbed over the rail and prepared to let my feet leave the edge. I looked down again before I took a deep breath. A girl like me wasn’t afraid of much, but even with a mattress below, I could break every bone in my body…and then I’d never get away.

“Are you fucking crazy?”

He appeared in the open doors of the patio, shirtless in his sweatpants, pissed off.

“Shit.” There was no time to dawdle, so I released the edge and put all my weight on the sheets.

It held, but the knot above me was already starting to loosen.

“Go, go, go,” I said under my breath, trying to move as quickly as possible without causing my body to swing forward and backward.

I felt the rope give as the sheets started to come undone.

“Stop moving!” Cauldron’s head appeared between the bars, and his strong hands grabbed the sheets below the loosening knot. He grabbed it just in time, holding my weight with his arms because the sheets’ attachment to the patio bars was gone. “Get your ass back up here.”

I continued my descent to the bottom. “Thanks for the hand.”

“Camille!”

I quickly climbed down to the very bottom then let go, falling ten feet onto the mattress below. It cushioned my landing exactly as I’d intended. I was able to get to my feet without even a sore ass. When I looked up to the balcony, Cauldron was already gone.

“Gotta hurry.” I’d already tried climbing the walls at the front gate several times, but the security was tightest at the access points. This time, I decided to go west, where there was just foliage. Maybe there was another house nearby. No idea. The limestone wall was higher here than it was at the entrance, so I had my work cut out for me as I dug my fingertips into the grooves between the rocks and hoisted my body up higher.

I couldn’t bring any of my things with me besides some money and my ID, but it was better than staying. I continued to climb, and when I was halfway up, I heard Cauldron behind me. “You could have broken your neck, you know that?”

“Well, that’s how much I hate you.” I kept my focus on the wall and continued climbing. “Take it as a compliment.”

“Get down from there.”

“Nope, I’m good.” I kept going, over halfway to the top.

“The ground on the other side is uneven. You’ll break your ankle.”

“I can hop the rest of the way.”

He really turned angry. “Get your ass down here, or I’ll break your ankle myself.”
When I tried to leave, Grave forced me to stay. He's obsessed with me, and not in the good kind of way. Griffin is out of the game, but he gives me a piece of information that can set me free.
Not for free, at least. If I want his protection, I'll have to make it worth his while.
Million-euro Bugattis, bright-yellow Ferraris, and a few Lamborghinis pulled up to the Parisian estate. Rich people in tuxedos and gowns stepped out, and they let the valets take their cars away. The three-story palace was lit with a golden glow, the fountain in the center splashing with a gentle backdrop of water.

When my driver pulled up to the front, I felt my heart tighten like a fist.

Would the black wig disguise me?

The bright-red lipstick?

The green contacts?

Would he see right through the charade?

The door opened, and Raymond helped me out of the car.

I recognized him.

But he didn’t seem to recognize me.

Hidden in the crowd of aristocrats, I emerged into the downstairs parlor, immediately swallowed by waiters with trays of bubbly champagne and triangles of bruschetta. I had business to take care of, but that didn’t stop me from grabbing a flute and a slice of bread. I enjoyed both, my eyes scanning for the man of the hour.

It didn’t take me long to find him.

As if he had the focus of a spotlight, he was surrounded in that golden glow, a shine to his eyes. A woman was at his side, a petite brunette who had her arm tucked in his, looking up at him like every word he said was utterly fascinating.

His dark hair was slicked back, and his dark eyes looked like fresh espresso first thing in the morning. Instead of holding a flute of champagne, he held a glass of scotch. It was a power move—like everything else he did.

Rich. Powerful. Handsome.

Every man wanted to be him. Every woman wanted him to be her husband.

But he wasn’t quite what he seemed.

I knew the mansion like the back of my hand, so I snuck away from the crowd, keeping my eyes on the butlers to make sure they were distracted, and then made my way upstairs. My heels tapped against the hardwood, but the sound of violins seemed to muffle it. The brightness of the chandeliers disappeared as I arrived on the second floor. The music and conversation were lower, like someone turned the dial on a stereo.

The second floor seemed vacant.

I left my empty flute on the nearest surface then continued up to the third floor.

The anxiety worsened, because now that I was so close to my goal, I was more terrified of losing it. I put my life on the line for this, but it was worth it. I crept to the third floor, careful to remain quiet even though no one was around. My breaths grew louder and labored because my lungs weren’t getting the air they needed. I turned down a couple hallways until I found the spot.

I tried the door.

Locked.

I’d anticipated this scenario, so I pulled out the pins hidden in my hair and tried to open the lock. I picked at it exactly as Bones had told me, hitting the mechanism just right to get the lock disabled. I’d practiced on several doors, but in the heat of the moment, it was hard not to tremble and fumble.

Click.

Thank gawd.

I pushed the door open and found his most prized possessions behind glass, as if it was a jewelry store.

There it sat, right in the center, the pearls iridescent and flawless.

I crept forward and tried to find a door to slide open, a lid to lift, but there was nothing. Then I saw the gentle flash of red light, the alarm that protected all the irreplaceable gems inside.

Motherfucker.

I’d have to break the glass with my elbow, grab the necklace, and hightail it out of there as quickly as possible. The servants had an elevator so they could bring their food cart to the different floors and serve His Grace… or whatever the fuck they called him. I would use that to make my escape, take the elevator to the basement. It was the fastest way to get down there, so they wouldn’t be able to follow me immediately.

“Jet-black isn’t your color, darling.” The deep voice was playful on the surface, making the threat underneath indistinguishable. But it was there, masked by his charm, subtle as it left his handsome mouth.

I released the breath I’d just taken.

“But that dress…was made for you.” His eyes drifted down my body as he spoke. It was obvious in his tone that his gaze ravished my body, that his hands would grab my hips once they came near enough.

I’d come all the way here for this necklace—and I wasn’t leaving without it.

I slammed my elbow against the glass. It shattered into pieces, cutting my arm in the process and setting off the alarm.

I snatched the pearl necklace and ran for it.

He blocked my path, a slight smile on his lips, threat in his eyes. “You think I didn’t recognize you? You think an ugly wig and cheap lipstick are enough to hide all the details my hands could recognize in the dark?”
