It’s time to visit the Varik Clan.

While everyone has found their happily ever after, the four brothers and their loving father are still finding mischief and tender moments.

This collection of EIGHT stories touches on each of the Variks and includes a never-before-release novella, Gideon’s Ghost Story.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Marcus Loses His Mind

This was a mistake.

An enormous, horrible mistake.

Forcing Ethan into hunting when his mate was in a mood was turning into a test of Marcus’s willpower. He’d forgotten to take into account that his mate had a wicked streak a mile wide when pushed.

And Marcus had pushed.

Right now, Marcus was leaning against the wall in the dark nightclub, his hands balled into tight fists, as he watched his adorable mate flirt lavishly with another man who was supposed to be Ethan’s meal.

The problem was, Ethan seemed to be purposefully dragging out the process. He was practically hanging on the man’s arm and touching his chest as he flashed his sweetest, most attentive smile. It was part of hunting humans: Vampires lured them in, getting them lost in sexual energy so they could steal a bit of blood.

And Ethan liked to torment Marcus when he was pissed. He’d picked his prey based on how similar they were to Marcus. He’d touched and flirted outrageously, drawing out the moment, as if he were trying to make Marcus finally snap.

Marcus was at the end of his rope. He’d been so busy with Aiden and dealing with other vampire clans wanting the king’s time that he’d had little time to spend with his mate. If he’d not set the reminder on his calendar, he wouldn’t have remembered that tonight was the night Ethan needed to feed. His mate had been a vampire for barely two years. There was no way Marcus was allowing him to hunt alone just yet.

Ethan’s eyes slid across the room, meeting Marcus’s with flawless accuracy, an evil grin spreading on his lips. The man tried to follow his gaze, but Ethan placed his hand to the man’s cheek, turning his head back so he saw only Ethan.

That gentle caress pushed Marcus to his limit. Those touches and smiles belonged to him and him alone. He shoved away from the wall, starting to wade through the crowd of scantily clad people listening to loud, obnoxious music.

At that second, Ethan pulled the man into his arms and pressed his mouth to his neck. Marcus halted sharply, teeth clenched so tight his jaw was aching, but there was also relief. Ethan was feeding at last. Their eyes locked over the man’s broad shoulder, and the anger burning in Ethan’s eyes was hot enough to light Marcus on fire.

Feeding took only a couple of minutes, and to the world it looked as if the two men were simply making out. When Ethan was finished, he carefully directed the man to sit in a tall pub chair, partially leaning him against the wall for support. Ethan murmured something that was drowned out by the music, and Marcus honestly didn’t care what it was. He grabbed his mate’s elbow and dragged him through the bustle of people to the nightclub exit.

Bitter cold air smacked him in the face as they hit the sidewalk, but it did nothing to cool his temper. Ethan tried twice to pull free of his grip, but Marcus didn’t loosen his hold. Wisdom said they needed to at least make it to the car before they argued, but he knew he couldn’t wait that long. He needed to remove the memory of that man from Ethan’s lips, from his fingertips.

Ethan was his mate. He was also his fledgling. Marcus had been one of the vampires to make him. He was the master, and Ethan needed to follow his directions. It was a deeply ingrained instinct to only teach and protect a fledgling, but there was also a darker need to possess. And Marcus had no interest in tempering that need right now.

He pulled Ethan into a narrow alley two buildings down from the nightclub. When they’d found some shadows heavy enough to cloak them, he released Ethan as the young vampire attempted to jerk away yet again.

“What the fuck!” Ethan snapped. “You were the one who insisted I feed tonight. I fed. Are you happy now?”

“No,” Marcus just barely managed to grind out between his teeth before he shoved Ethan against a rough brick wall. He crowded close and slammed his mouth over Ethan’s in a brutal, demanding kiss. Sharp fangs nicked his tongue, mixing a hint of his own blood with the rich taste that still coated Ethan’s tongue from his meal.

Instead of fighting him as he expected, Ethan clawed at his black button-down shirt, trying to pull him closer, as if he could make them one person. A rush of hot, angry desire pumped through Marcus, flowing straight to his cock. It swelled painfully, pushing on the front of his pants, begging for more attention.

Marcus jammed his hips forward, pressing his cock into Ethan’s hip and wringing a needy cry out of his mate. Fingers twisted in his hair, sending a sharp pain through his scalp. Ethan stretched up on the tips of his toes, rubbing his own hard-on against Marcus, his motions frantic and a touch desperate.
The moon drifted in and out behind heavy clouds as if she didn’t want to be spotted watching them. He would have preferred she stay hidden—her light was making it easier for their camp to be spotted. But the fires they’d lit were doing that as well.

They were only a day from home.

One short day of travel away from his entire world changing forever.

Aiden had known this was coming for a few years now, but was it so wrong that he’d hoped for more time?

A noise had him spinning toward it, his sword half out of his scabbard before his eyes fell on Ronan’s familiar smirk. The firelight danced across his handsome face, highlighting a sharp nose that had been broken more than once and full lips nearly lost to a thick black beard he’d grown against the bitter cold. Shadows caressed broad shoulders and long legs that put him just a few inches taller than Aiden, but the man’s personality and bearing made him seem so much bigger. Ronan had gone to bed hours ago. What the hell was he doing up and wandering around the camp?

Aiden shoved his sword into its scabbard and straightened, only to have Ronan tilt his head to the side in silent invitation as he walked toward the edge of camp. Flattening his lips into a hard line, Aiden held back an irritated growl and followed him because that was exactly what Ronan was expecting him to do. He’d followed Ronan since they were children, getting into endless amounts of trouble and countless bloody battles when they were older.

After nearly twenty years, Aiden would still follow Ronan anywhere he asked.

Moving silently through the camp, he nodded to a couple of other men on guard duty as he trailed behind Ronan.

No, Prince Ronan.

Soon to be King Ronan, the moment they made it back to the castle walls.

My prince.

The thought came unbidden, and Aiden was too tired to give it more than a halfhearted shove out of his mind.

Aiden’s frown dug deeper as Ronan kept walking, much farther than necessary if he only meant to take a piss. He glanced over his shoulder to find the fires from camp were just tiny pinpricks of light between the dark trees.

The farther Ronan walked, the more danger he put himself in if anyone was watching their camp. Ronan’s father had been on his deathbed already when the news reached them of his waning health. They’d been traveling for a sennight to reach his side. If the family’s enemies hoped to overthrow their rule, they needed only to kill Ronan now before he could take the throne and control of the army.

There had been no trouble on the road so far, but Aiden was not taking unnecessary chances with Ronan’s life. They were too close to his friend achieving his destiny.

He could feel deep in his bones that Ronan was meant to be king. His childhood friend would be a great king. Strong, compassionate, smart, brave. He was exactly what their people needed to bring an end to the wars and finally unite the various squabbling fiefdoms.

“Dammit, Ronan,” Aiden snarled, unwilling to raise his voice above a harsh whisper. “What the devil are you about? This is too far from camp.” He quickened his pace so he could grab Ronan’s shoulder, spinning him around.

When Ronan turned, Aiden was greeted by the broad, mischievous smile he knew so well. The moon broke through the clouds at just the right moment, allowing Aiden to see the laughter dancing in his prince’s dark eyes. They were opposites in so many ways. There was a swarthiness to Ronan’s complexion to go with his almost midnight eyes and liquid black hair. He could have been called king of the ravens. In contrast, Aiden had bland brown hair and fair complexion against amber-brown eyes.

“I was curious to see how far you’d let me go. And you never call me by my name anymore.”

“Forgive me, my prince,” Aiden said quickly. Fatigue was weighing heavily after their long journey, along with dark thoughts he’d didn’t want plaguing his mind when he needed to be focused on Ronan’s safety. “Soon to be my king.”

Ronan made a disgruntled noise in his throat as he started walking again, but he didn’t get more than a few steps before he stopped and stared out into the black forest. He stood, only partially turned away from Aiden, allowing his friend to see his jaw muscles clench.

“You will be a great king,” Aiden continued in a low but strong voice. “The people will love you. You’ll bring peace and prosperity to the land.”

Ronan swung toward Aiden, his upper lip drawn in a snarl. “And what about us?”

Those angry words lanced through Aiden’s heart, knocking him back a step. Most wouldn’t blink at Ronan’s question. There was no Ronan without Aiden. No Aiden without Ronan. They’d been each other’s constant companions since they could walk. When Ronan’s family ascended to power and was supported by Aiden’s, it was only natural that Aiden became Ronan’s trusted bodyguard as well as advisor.
Winter Varik believes in only one thing—protecting his family.
Even from himself. For nearly 200 years, he’s kept a dangerous secret from his brothers.
But Winter might have found his salvation in the form of a sexy witch named Fox.
Too bad this same witch was named in a prophecy foretelling the destruction of the Variks.
In a race to uncover the truth behind the prophecy and take down a vampire determined to kill all the Variks, Winter may have to choose between finally having his heart’s desire and the family he loves.
Embracing Winter is the fourth book in the Lords of Discord paranormal romance series. This book contains vampires, werewolves, witches, nosy brothers, music, lots of rope, sass, hope, dirty talk, redemption, and a love that will never end. And did I mention rope? Lots of rope.
He looked up and down the street but saw few people. Sunrise was only a couple of hours away. He felt both exhausted and so very alive.

He was a vampire.

Aiden had changed him into a vampire.

When his father slipped away with his older brothers, Marcus, Rafe, and Beltran, he had begun to fear he would be excluded. That he’d be left human and alone. All in the name of protecting him and keeping him safe. Yet, the whole reason they’d waited until he’d reached the age of twenty-three was so they could stop protecting him and treating him like a child.

A bit to his surprise, they’d come back for him. They were sticking together as they’d agreed.

The early hours of the spring day were crisp and cool; a thin tendril of fog was winding its way through the city. There was a distant clomp of a horse’s hooves on stone, but the echo through the buildings made it hard to place its direction. Otherwise, the world was silent.

There was a feeling more than any telltale sign that Aiden was approaching him. Winter turned in time to see the vampire exit the narrow alley they’d taken, slipping into the building containing a variety of rundown flats.

His senses were so much…more now. It wasn’t just sharper eyesight or hearing. He could feel things. He was aware of Aiden differently now. His sire. There was an extra energy to him that pulsed out, and Winter could feel it. It was strange but oddly grounding and comforting as well. As if he were suddenly more connected to this man than he’d been before.

Would it be the same for his brothers?

Unfortunately, answering that question would have to wait until they returned to Marcus’s home. For now, it was just him and Aiden on the streets of London, not something his oldest brother was at all happy about. He had wanted to accompany Winter, but Aiden had insisted it be just the two of them for this first outing. And Winter had a very good guess as to why.

With his surrogate father standing close by, Winter turned his attention to his surroundings. He closed his eyes and listened.

But only silence could be heard.

There was nothing. No little whispers. No laughing. No forlorn cries and little whimpers. There was the wind and the horses. The grind of wheels across stones. A cart, maybe.

“Winter?” Aiden’s voice was low and cautious. A faint thread of worry.

But Aiden had every right to be worried. He was the only one who knew that Winter, like his mother, heard voices. The question had been hanging in the air since the brothers made a pact years ago to become vampires: would Winter go insane just like their mother when he was turned?

Now that moment was here.

Winter’s heart was pounding so loud, his ears and his whole body had become one tensed muscle. His entire existence was balanced on the edge of a knife, all of it building to this. Were the voices that had cluttered up his mind for nearly twenty years still there? Was he going to go mad? Was he a threat to his family?

He didn’t want to hope that the nightmare might finally be over. The dream of being free had lingered in his brain for years, but it had never happened, becoming a sharp, bitter disappointment. Protecting his brothers from his ugly truth had made him into a liar, putting a distance between him and his family that left an ache within him.

And he wanted it all done at last. He didn’t want to be a liar. He didn’t want to be alone anymore.

Aiden had insisted he accompany Winter without his family in case he—the youngest son—went mad. His father was determined to protect his brothers as well as Winter. He’d tried to convince Aiden for months now to end his life if the worst happened, but he’d begun to fear that Aiden had other plans. That he intended to safeguard Winter away from his brothers until another solution could be found.

But Winter didn’t want to be a burden on his family in any way. He didn’t want the voices plaguing him any longer…even if it meant his own death.

Second after blissfully silent second ticked by, and there was nothing. Hope rose in Winter’s chest, nearly choking him. He covered his mouth with his hand and blinked back tears of intense relief and joy.

“I hear…nothing,” he whispered, dropping the hand he’d used to ward off Aiden.

“Really?” Aiden demanded as air exploded out of his lungs.

“There’s a horse. A cart or maybe a carriage. The wind. But our voices are the only ones I hear.”
Beltran Varik believes in science.
It holds all the answers he seeks. Except for one.
How in the world did he end up falling in love with two werewolves?
Of course, there was no way science could account for the beauty, warmth, and mind-blowing sexiness of Wyatt and River.
The two shifters are outcasts from their own kind and must seek the protection of a vampire. Bel might take them in out of a need to keep them safe, but his feelings for them grow into something so much deeper.
Unfortunately, Bel might have to choose between his wolves and his family as a fight brews with the local werewolf pack and the Variks face a darker threat from the Ministry.
Waking Bel is the third book in the Lords of Discord paranormal romance series. This book is an MMM and contains vampires, werewolves, nosy brothers, music, science!, Ozzie the raven, so many first times, hope, dirty talk, and a love that will never end.

Beltran Varik stepped onto the empty sidewalk and dragged in a deep breath of some rather wretched air, but that didn’t matter. Because he was alive.

He’d died, which hadn’t been at all what he’d expected. Not that he was sure what dying was supposed to be like.

But now he was walking down the street with two of his brothers and his surrogate father, all of them alive in a manner that scientifically confused him.

The world seemed so much bigger and sharper than it had been when he’d been human. Now, as a vampire, the colors were richer at night, the scents so much clearer. It was as if his senses had been honed to a razor’s edge. Did this make him a predator now?

If only he’d known this would happen—he would have taken more measurements of his human senses so he could make more accurate comparisons now.

Rafe’s low, almost taunting laughter pulled Bel from his swirling thoughts. He turned to find his twin leaning on a brick wall, one foot braced against it, looking for all the world a dandy enjoying a night on the town. But that was Rafe. Always scouting for a bit of entertainment.

“I know that look, dear Bel,” Rafe murmured. “You’re positively itching to get back to your study to start entering all your observations into your little journal.”

“Of course. Things feel so different now. I need my journals so I can start making notes while I can remember what it was to be human.”

Rafe winced and waved at Bel to keep his voice down as he pushed away from the wall. “Bloody hell, you need to watch what you say while we’re out.”

“Yes, I know. I was just excited, and I forgot myself,” Bel said, heat burning in his cheeks.

Rafe stood next to Bel and wrapped an arm around his shoulders, pulling him in close. It was a relief to see that Rafe’s color was much better now. Horror had gutted Bel when he realized he’d attacked his twin shortly after waking as a vampire. Prior to being reborn, he would have been sure that he’d never harm any of his brothers no matter what.

“You must be careful, dear brother.”

“Yes, of course. Are you sure you’re feeling better, though?”

Rafe’s hand squeezed Bel’s shoulder. “Right as rain. No damage done, I swear.”

Bel stared at the man at his side, fully aware that Rafe loved to mask the truth so Bel didn’t worry, but Rafe’s pallor was better than it had been at Marcus’s home.

Even now as he looked back on the moment, he couldn’t quite recall what had happened. One second there was simply nothing, and the next, he was wrapped in his brother’s strong arms, both relief and worry thick in Rafe’s voice. There had been consuming hunger that gave way to exquisite pleasure…and then he was being pulled off Rafe while his twin fought to keep them together. It was all one giant mess, but Aiden had explained that accidents such as that happened when a vampire was hungry.

There was an easy fix, at least. So long as Bel fed properly, there would be no more accidents that harmed his brothers or anyone else.

There was so much he was dying to ask Aiden. A small smile formed at the thought of the man. He’d been a father to Bel and his three brothers for so long. A protector even after he and their mother could no longer be together.

But now that they were vampires, he was their sire as well. At least that was the vampire term, Aiden had explained.

Bel liked knowing the precise words for things. Knowing the correct terminology kept things in tidy order.

Aiden stepped out of the dark alley with Marcus, their eldest brother. Their heads were close in whispered conversation, and Bel found himself whispering, “Sire,” as if to try it out.

Aiden’s head popped up, and he grinned at Bel with a look of love and pride. “Son,” he whispered back.

“Yes. Sire,” Rafe murmured, sounding as if he were trying the word out on his tongue as well. “It really doesn’t have the right ring to it. Doesn’t sound nearly as nice as ‘Father.’ ”

“I agree,” Marcus added.

Bel’s brow furrowed and he took a step closer to Aiden, Rafe’s hand still resting on his shoulder. “Does that cause a problem with all the new rules we must follow? Should we not call you ‘Father’?”

The older man lifted his hand and cupped the side of Bel’s face, his smile growing wider as his eyes touched on each of the three men around him. “There are some rules I’m happy to ignore. This would be one of them.”

“Excellent,” Bel breathed.

He needed his family. They were a safeguard that gave him the strength to pursue his studies. He was loath to admit it, but they formed a protective wall around him, separating him from the demands of society. People outside his family confounded him. They didn’t make sense, particularly with their irrational demands of marriage and children.
Rafe has devoted his immortal existence to pleasure and causing mischief. The only ones who can depend on him are his brothers. Of course, that’s very much a Varik thing.
But when the leader of the Arsenault clan specifically requests Rafe’s help in tracking down a killer, he can’t say no. Sure, Rafe claims he’s doing it for his family. They’ve attracted too many enemies and could use a few allies.
That’s not the whole truth, though. There’s something about Philippe Arsenault that draws Rafe in. He wants more of Philippe. The vampire leaves him longing for another second in his presence, another taste of his lips, another caress of those perfect fingers.
Yet when it’s all over, what will become of Philippe and Rafe. Because Philippe will always be an Arsenault, and Rafe will always be a Varik.
Saving Rafe is the second book in an MM paranormal romance series that has vampires, betrayal, annoying brothers, music, heartbreak, hope, sexy times, and a pair of star-crossed lovers.

Strong hands grabbed his shoulders, holding him steady. A deeper instinct demanded he pull away, run. Run fast. But before he could do more than tense his muscles for an explosion of action, Marcus’s voice broke through the clutter clogging his brain.

The words didn’t make sense, but his older brother’s tone was gentle. Reassuring. Safe.

Everything was safe. He was safe.

His heart was still hammering against his chest, but he drew in a deep breath and rubbed the heel of one palm into his left eye and then the right. The world had gone from complete nothingness to a cacophony of sounds and feelings. An angry, overwhelming collection of noises his brain was trying to sort through.

Lowering his hand, Rafe blinked and his eyes focused on his brother’s worried expression as he stared at him. One hand moved from Rafe’s shoulder to cup the side of his face with a surprising gentleness he’d not experienced with Marcus since they were kids. Bel, yes. His twin, Beltran, was all kindness and sweet concern. But not Marcus.

“Are you okay?” his brother asked.

Before Rafe’s brain could formulate an answer, it was distracted by the red smear at the corner of Marcus’s mouth. It looked like…blood.

His eyes darted over Marcus’s face. It didn’t look like he’d sustained an injury. Why was he bleeding? What had happened—

Memories slammed into his brain, freezing the breath in his lungs. Rafe pulled out of Marcus’s grasp. His legs weren’t yet strong enough to hold him upright, so he scooted a few feet across the thick Aubusson rug covering Marcus’s library. Marcus tried to reach for him, but Rafe held up a hand to ward him off, and Marcus relented.

Vampires.

They had all agreed to become vampires. To save their mother. To protect her.

Had it worked? Had he truly died and come back as a vampire? He didn’t feel any different. He felt alive. Normal. Himself, if a little disoriented.

“Rafe,” Marcus said, his voice growing firmer and more demanding. “Speak to me. How do you feel?”

“Fine,” Rafe replied, not caring for the note of surprised wonder in that single word. Okay, maybe he wasn’t quite himself yet, but he’d get there. “I…I don’t think it worked. I don’t feel any different.”

Marcus smiled at him, seated on the floor in his fine suit. Only his jacket and perfectly knotted neckcloth were missing now. The collar of his white shirt was open at the throat, and there was another smear of blood there as well as on the fabric. But there was no wound.

Aiden had bitten him there. Rafe had watched it, his stomach churning and clenching at the sight of his powerful brother held so easily in Aiden’s unyielding grip, his blood pumping down the vampire’s throat in one long swallow after another.

But if there was blood at Marcus’s mouth, did that mean he’d fed as well? Rafe’s hand lifted to his throat, remembering where Aiden’s lips had brushed his skin a moment before fangs sank deep.

“I didn’t bite you,” Marcus said.

Rafe’s heart skipped a beat, and he fought the urge to inch a little farther away from his brother. “You can read my thoughts now?”

Marcus shook his head. There was a bit of a rueful smile that disappeared far too quickly. “They’re written across your face.”

“He bit me.”

Rafe’s eyes darted across the room to take in the sight of his youngest brother, Winter, seated on the floor as well, his back against a chair as if he hadn’t the strength to even climb into it. The collar of his shirt was open, and it looked as if there were a pair of puncture wounds in his throat still seeping blood.

“You bit our brother?” Rafe demanded.

“It’s okay, Rafe,” Winter said. His oldest brother’s face was turning red, and his eyes dropped to the floor as if he couldn’t meet Rafe’s gaze.

Rafe opened his mouth to argue, but another voice chimed in, and Rafe found himself instantly calming.

“Winter is fine. Marcus was careful. I watched him the entire time.”

Rafe blinked and looked over at the older man kneeling on the floor to his right. Aiden. Aiden had been a vampire for over a century. Fallen in love with their mother. Taken care of them when she was ill. And now he was changing them so they could oversee her care.

Aiden, with his long dark hair, vibrant eyes, and too-handsome face, watched Rafe while he kneeled over the unmoving body of Bel. Aiden’s wrist was pressed to his brother’s parted lips, but there was no movement from his twin. It didn’t even look like his chest rose and fell with breath.

“Bel!” Rafe gasped. He lurched forward to his knees, crawling over to his twin’s side. More bits and pieces of their earlier conversation were coming to him now. They’d agreed to be transformed in order of birth, and while Rafe and Bel were twins, Rafe was technically older by minutes.
Vampires slaughtered my family. No one believed me until I met some new friends, who promised to help me get justice.
But nothing prepared me for Marcus Varik. Tall, dark, and mind-numbingly sexy.
But he’s also shy, protective, and adorably eccentric.
Oh God, I should have never agreed to betray him.
Hopefully, it's not too late to fix my mistake before I lose more people I love.
From the hall, he could hear the insistent ticking of the grandfather clock as if the damn thing was counting each of the final seconds of his life with a steady determination.

The rest of the house was silent. The few servants he dared to keep around were still asleep in their beds at the top of the house for another couple of hours. His youngest brother, Winter, sat in the dark leather wingback chair close to the window, turning a gold coin over and over again between his fingers. Its shiny surface would catch and toss out flashes of light, but he paid no notice. His gaze was locked on a distant point Marcus knew was not in the room.

One of his other brothers, Beltran, was reading a dusty science tome, seemingly oblivious to the fact that their lives were balanced on a razor’s edge. Tonight, everything was changing for them. Very likely ending.

The door to the library opened and Rafe, Beltran’s twin, returned, his violin and bow clutched tightly in one hand. The hair at his temples was slick with sweat, and he looked a little pale, but his ever-present smirk twisted his lips. Marcus straightened from the mantle and Beltran closed his book, his quick blue eyes sweeping over his brother.

“Any trouble?” Marcus asked.

“None other than I plan to ram my bow down Bach’s throat when I finally meet him in Hell,” Rafe muttered. He carelessly dropped his violin and bow in a chair as he marched over to a sideboard. He opened a crystal decanter and splashed some whiskey into a glass. “I’m so bloody sick of Bach.”

“Did you ever consider playing some Mendelssohn or maybe Vivaldi for her?” Winter inquired.

Marcus sighed heavily and Beltran shook his head.

“Yes, I’ve bloody tried Mendelssohn and Vivaldi. Do you take me for an uncultured hack?” Rafe snarled at his little brother.

“Yes,” Winter said with glee in his voice.

Marcus pushed away from the fireplace and stepped into Rafe’s direct path, toward Winter, his drink forgotten in his clenched hand. He used his bigger frame to block Rafe’s view. Rafe’s usually elegant appearance was a bit rumpled, with a starched white tie hanging limp and the top of his shirt open, exposing his slender neck and perfect pale skin. His longish dark hair was in wild disarray about his head. The ribbon he used to hold it back now missing. For all his foppish ways and strict adherence to the latest fashion trends, Rafe’s body vibrated with hidden power and strength. Rafe was a bit taller than Marcus with a leaner frame, but Marcus could still handle him if necessary. They’d all grown up having one scuffle after another.

Fights were inevitable with four brothers relatively close in age, though bookish Beltran was the least prone to pick one. Winter, on the other hand, seemed to revel in his ability to get under Rafe’s skin. But then, Rafe loved to talk down to his baby brother, even though there were barely four years between them. And Marcus remained the perennial peacekeeper whether he wished to be or not.

“This isn’t the time,” Marcus snapped.

Rafe’s lips twisted into a mocking grin, and he lifted his glass in a salute. “Why not? This could be our last chance.”

“Is she asleep?” Marcus questioned. He refused to acknowledge Rafe’s comment, even if he had been thinking it only moments earlier.

The sneer returned when he lowered his drink. “Yes, Mother is asleep.”

“Tonight’s hunt?” Beltran asked. Marcus could almost imagine him pulling out a bit of parchment upon which to make a note for his scientific journals.

“Fine.” His tone was a little less harsh when talking to his twin. Rafe turned away from Marcus and approached the chair that held his violin and bow. Placing his glass on a table, he picked up the instrument, showing more care now than when he’d entered the room. “The hunt was uneventful. She seemed at ease tonight. Though she’s getting faster—there were a couple of times I was hard-pressed to keep up with her.”

“Did she draw anyone’s notice?”

Rafe sat in the chair, his fingers sliding over the polished surface of the violin in a gentle caress. “Not that I saw. Dinner survived, though they may wake up a little worse for wear come morning.”

“Then the timing is right. We must act tonight. This quiet spell will make it easier for her to accept the change,” Marcus said.

Rafe snorted. “Except we never know how long her quiet spells will last. Tomorrow night she could wake in another of her black moods.”

“You’re also assuming that this will work at all,” Winter added.

“We need to decide.” There was a soft clinking of a chain and a click as Beltran opened his pocket watch to check the time. “Aiden should be here any minute now.”
