Jackson
Everyone says what a lucky guy I am. I've got a great kid, an amicable relationship with my ex, and a job working cattle on one of the largest ranches in Eden, Wyoming. Only problem is that "everyone" has no clue that I'm living a half-life.
Because the other half is a closeted gay man who's got it bad for the young ranch hand he works with day in and day out. But the very straight Travis isn't an option. And even if he were, my sexy co-worker isn't exactly committed to commitment.
So it's time for a change and since gay guys aren't exactly falling off trees in Eden, I'm going to need a little help...
Travis
It was supposed to be a Friday night like any other. Me and my best friend heading into town to find some female company for a few hours. And even though Jackson usually goes home alone, he's still a great wingman.
Unfortunately, between my impatience to get the night started and my bad habit of snooping, I've learned two things about Jackson in the space of five minutes that have left me all kinds of confused. Jackson's gay.
And he's placed a classified ad to try and hook up with some guy he can't get his mind off after a brief run-in at a hardware store in the city.
Now I can't get my mind off Jackson. Don't get me wrong, I like the ladies, but why can't I stop thinking about my good-looking best friend and the faceless stranger he's ready to start something new with? Jackson doesn't need some random guy right now. Not when he has me...
Oh hell.

Books in Series:

Love in Eden Series by Sloane Kennedy

Books by Author:

Sloane Kennedy Books

Chapter 1

Travis

"Come on, Jackson, get a move on!" I shouted the second I walked into the room. Not surprisingly, I was rewarded with a volley of swear words coming from the direction of the bathroom. Well, they weren't actually real swear words. I supposed that was what happened when you had a kid.

I'd only known Jackson a few years, but the few times I'd heard him let loose on some guy because he'd been too rough with a horse or cow, I'd been stunned by the older ranch hand's show of temper. There had been no holding back the swear words in those particular cases. Hell, there'd even been a time or two when he’d let his fists fly. We might've worked on a cattle ranch where the animals' fates were undeniable, but unlike a lot of the men in our business, Jackson believed every living thing, whether it had hooves, paws, wings or scales, deserved respect and kindness. It was what had first drawn me to the man when I’d started at Broken Tree Ranch, especially since I'd grown up believing men had to be men and that meant using one's fists instead of their words to get their point across.

I heard the shower come on and shook my head. Jackson Doyle was a gentle soul when it came to delivering a calf or patching up one of the ranch's horses, but he sucked at being on time for anything. In that sense, he was as bad as all the women I'd ever dated put together.

"Dated… right Travis," I murmured to myself. Dated was a generous term for the kinds of relationships I'd been having with women pretty much from the moment I'd figured out how fond of them my dick was.

I strode across the small room which consisted of a bed, loveseat, and a few small kitchen appliances and practically stomped into the bathroom.

"You've got two minutes," I declared as I ripped the shower curtain back. "I finally got Brandy to agree to meet me—" I began to say, but my words got stuck in my throat as my eyes fell on Jackson. He was in the midst of washing his semi-hard dick and something about the sight of his hand on his own junk had me feeling like cotton had been shoved into my mouth and the frogs I’d been so fond of catching as a kid were jumping around in my belly.

"Jesus, Travis," Jackson snapped as he jerked back in surprise. I told myself to look up, but my eyes were glued to his wet, soapy cock. It was only when he jerked the shower curtain closed that whatever spell had fallen over me broke. I felt hot and cold all over as Jackson yelled, "I'll be out in five!"

I might have grumbled some kind of response, but I wasn't sure as I turned and practically fled the bathroom. My skin went from hot and cold to all hot, and I ended up reaching to see if my forehead was sweating because it sure as hell felt like I was feverish.

What the hell is wrong with me?

I found myself circling Jackson’s living space as I tried to catch my breath. The image of water sliding over his naked body refused to leave my brain, so I forced myself to focus on the sparse room instead. I'd been in the place hundreds of times, since it was usually me who was making sure Jackson was up every morning so that he wouldn’t be late for the day’s assignments at breakfast. Our boss, Mac, ran a tight ship, or in our case, a tight ranch. But we were well compensated for the long, hard hours we put in. Our pay was good, but unlike most of the ranches in the area, the senior hands at Broken Tree had the added perk of having their own living space. Jackson and I, along with four other hands, shared a small house on the ranch’s property. The newer ranch hands were consigned to living in a bunkhouse where they didn't have as much privacy.

While my room tended to have a more cluttered look, Jackson's was neat and tidy and the only decorations were pictures of his ex-wife and kid. Those were by his bed. I found myself heading in that direction. I wasn't sure why I was so drawn to the photographs. Maybe because it was still so hard to fathom that Jackson had once been a family man with a pretty young wife and a son. Jackson was such a quiet, distant man around most people that I struggled to envision him coming home from work each day and greeting a wife and child. But at the same time, I knew he was nothing like my own father, who'd had a passel of kids and had ignored them all in favor of a case of beer each night.
Zander
The quick stopover in the small ranching town of Eden, Wyoming was supposed to be the chance to close the door on a piece of my past. Unfortunately, my temperamental car has other ideas. The thing is, with my tattoos and piercings, a guy like me doesn't exactly fit in a town like Eden. Then I meet her.
Sweet, innocent, single mom Jolene who does fit in Eden. At least on the outside.
But after five minutes with the spirited beauty, I know she's like me... an outsider always looking in. Still, I need to remember to keep my hands to myself because Eden's just a dot on the map, a place I need to put in my rearview mirror sooner rather than later.
Problem is, Jolene isn't the kind of woman you can just walk away from...

Jolene
It was the date from hell that turned into something I never saw coming. One minute I'm fending off the unwanted advances of a guy who looks picture-perfect on paper, the next I'm pointing the barrel of my gun at the mysterious stranger who's decided I look like I need a helping hand.
Zander is all kinds of wrong for me and the conservative, insular town I've called home my entire life. But something about the kindhearted tough guy makes me wonder if a little bit of wrong is exactly what I need right now...
There was a small part of me that wanted to turn the radio back up and just ignore the sound of raised voices because the last time I'd gotten curious about such sounds, I’d nearly ended up behind bars.

But in the end, I set the volume on the lowest setting and stood there in silence as I simultaneously cleaned the wrench in my hand and listened to the commotion outside.

Energy surged beneath my skin as I heard a raised male voice say, "I'm tired of playing around, Jolene!"

There was a response, but it was too soft to make out. That in itself had warning bells going off in my head. "Let him have it, sweetheart," I murmured to myself. How many times had I played witness to the same type of encounter? Over and over I’d silently begged my mother to go off and rip my father a new one, but she never had. Even when I'd gotten old enough to stand between her and the bastard whose blood ran through my veins, she'd never reached her breaking point. At least, I hadn't thought she had. I'd been proven wrong three days after my twelfth birthday.

I shook off the memory that tried to invade my mind. It was easy enough to do when I heard the guy outside impatiently snap, "Do you have any idea how many versions of you are in this piece of shit town? Younger, prettier, smarter… I like me a challenge, but I've had a hell of a day and I’m not in the mood for your uptight bullshit."

I still couldn't hear what the woman had to say when she responded, but there was no doubting what the sound was that sharply cut her off. My vow to stay out of the situation went up in smoke when I heard no additional sounds coming from the woman. In fact, all I heard was the occasional soft banging of a body hitting metal.

There was a tiny part of my brain that tried to remind me that I needed to keep myself in check, but the second I walked out the side door and stepped around the building to where the gas pumps were, that voice went silent.

Completely silent.

The lights above the pumps were flickering, so it was only every few seconds that I saw what I knew was yet another image that would haunt me for the rest of my life.

The woman was small. There was just no getting over that part. Maybe it was because the guy she was with was a tank or maybe she was just a little thing, but either way, she was sorely outmatched. The guy had her pressed up against the side of a very expensive-looking pickup truck and was using one of his hands to hold both of hers in place above her head. I couldn't really see the rest of her because his large body hid much of hers from view. But now that I was outside, there was no missing the sounds she was making. Or trying to make, at least.

The asshole holding on to her was covering her mouth with his and even though I didn't see her face, I knew it was a bruising, cruel, ugly kiss that was meant to hurt and punish and nothing more. I could hear the sobs in the woman's throat as the man's free hand pressed between their bodies. It didn't take much of an imagination to determine what was happening.

I hadn't stopped moving after leaving the garage, so it took just seconds to reach the pair. My blood boiled with fury and excitement at the same time. I'd never been particularly proud of the fact that I sometimes took pleasure in hurting someone who was hurting another, but at that very moment, I had absolutely no shame over how much I was going to enjoy this.

I grabbed the guy by the hair and yanked hard at the same time that I slammed my foot into the back of his knee. His agonized scream was like a balm to my soul. I didn't care how many years of freedom this could cost me, it would be worth it. Especially when I got a brief glimpse of the woman and saw her tears mixing in with some blood on her cheek. So not only had the bastard struck her, he’d done it with some kind of object that had torn her delicate skin.

As the man knelt at my feet and cried pitifully, I reached for his right hand. The sight of the heavy gold ring had the rage inside me going from dangerous to full-on murderous. To cause the damage that he had, he would've had to have hit the woman with a closed fist. A blow from a man his size could have easily incapacitated any opponents. The young woman was lucky to still be standing.
I had one reason for never going back to the small town I once called home, but I never guessed it would be the same one that made me want to stay…
Brooks
I grew up in the small town of Eden, Wyoming, but never really felt like I fit in. Until I met the one boy who changed all that.
When we were kids, Xavier Price understood horses, but somehow, he got me too. He’d made me feel like I wasn’t just the overdressed, too sensitive fifteen-year-old geek who loved math and didn’t always say the right thing. But all that changed the night he threw my trust back in my face and betrayed my family in the worst kind of way.
And while I’m back in Eden to make sure my uncle’s horse ranch is operating in the black, the one thing I know I won’t have to deal with is the man who’d been on the verge of stealing my heart ten years ago.
Because Xavier Price is still in prison for what he did and even if he weren’t, he wouldn’t be foolish enough to show his face in Eden ever again. Right?
Xavier
Wrong.

Books in Series:

Love in Eden Series by Sloane Kennedy

Books by Author:

Sloane Kennedy Books

Chapter 1

Brooks

“Son of a—”

That was all I got out as a huge blur of black darted out in front of the car and I automatically slammed on the brakes. A second black shape hit the front of the Range Rover just as I came to a stop, causing the car to bounce. My jaw rattled as I watched a third cow race across the road and disappear into the trees.

"Shit," I growled as I tried to catch my breath. My heart was pounding erratically in my chest as I attempted to breathe normally while simultaneously driving the car to the narrow shoulder of the curvy highway.

“Welcome to Eden, Brooks,” I murmured to myself.

After getting the vehicle parked, I fumbled with shaky fingers to get my seatbelt unbuckled and stumbled out of the SUV. It occurred to me as I tried to steady myself that so far, coming back to Eden, Wyoming, was exactly what I’d thought it would be.

Dry, dusty, and frustratingly unpredictable.

My associates back in New York hadn't believed my tales of what Eden was like. They'd been sure I was making up everything from the tiny number of people that lived in the one-stoplight town to the single saloon (and yes, they really did call it a saloon in Eden) to the fact that it wasn't unusual to see the occasional stray cow ambling down Main Street. I'd received guffaws of laughter when I'd explained that while the single stoplight applied to cars and horses alike, cows always had the right-of-way.

See, cows in Eden are, and always have been, a big deal.

A really big deal.

But leave it to the members of my family tree to go against the grain and get into the horse business instead.

I dismissed thoughts of family because I wasn’t here to deal with the past or any of the nonsense the drama from my childhood had entailed. I was here to do a single job and that was it.

I walked around the front of my pricey rental car and automatically felt anxious upon seeing the dent and broken headlight. I knew it was ridiculous but seeing that damage was like a reminder that I didn't belong here anymore, that maybe I never really had, and that I'd failed before I'd even started. It was like the universe was telling me it knew I was going to fuck up what I was here to do.

I shook out my hands to try and loosen the tension that was coursing throughout my entire body. As upset as I was about the damage to the car, I was more concerned about the cow I’d hit. No amount of time in midtown traffic would ever match that of having a fifteen-hundred-pound animal bounce off the front of your car and keep moving like it had done nothing more than give you a love tap.

I was about to head in the direction the cows had gone when I heard rustling from the side of the hill the animals had come up from. I was already stepping back to seek out the safety of the vehicle in case it was a mountain lion or bear, or my least personal favorite carnivore that called Wyoming home, a wolf. But the approaching animal was all too familiar when I realized the gait belonged to hooves, not paws.

I pulled myself together as I waited for the horse and rider to clear the trees. The last thing I wanted was for someone to see how ridiculously shaken up I was by the whole thing. At least they'd attribute it to just the physical encounter and wouldn't have a clue what was going through my brain as I tried to interpret all the meanings behind the accident.

I prepared myself to graciously accept the forthcoming apology and laugh it off with a joke about cows and insurance that would be appropriate for the town’s residents’ unique sense of humor when it came to their livelihood, but I didn't even get the chance to put on the proverbial "life's great" mask because, like the cows, a blur of color was all I saw as it rushed past me. I was only able to make out a horse with a light coat and dark legs and a rider wearing dark clothing and a black cowboy hat. There was no apology, no checking to see if I was okay, no nothing.

"Asshole," I muttered under my breath, though I wasn't sure why I was even doing it quietly since the jerk was gone. I got back in the car and searched out the number on my rental contract so I could notify the agency about the damage right away.

I did that.

I played by the rules.

I tried not to dwell on the fact that I was breaking a couple of pretty big rules by even being out here in Eden. Not only would my father blow a gasket if he found out I was in Eden instead of working diligently on our investment firm’s next deal, but I’d promised myself a long time ago that I’d put Eden out of my mind for good.
