She’s blind, yet he’s the one who cannot see.
Snow might be blind, but it doesn’t stop her from seeing the powerful and fierce Lord of Fire’s true nature. He’s pigheaded, domineering, demanding, and completely frustrating. The few encounters she’s had with him when he’s visited the Clan Macardle did not go well, especially when he threatened her pup, Thaw. She intends to avoid the fiery Lord of Fire as much as possible. Unfortunately, there’s not much she can do when an unexpected snowstorm throws them together along with an unwanted stay at his keep.
Tarass, the Lord of Fire, has never met such a willful, disobedient, unpredictable woman as Snow, and her protective, snarling little pup doesn’t help matters. She infuriates him at every turn and when he’s forced to save her from freezing to death in a raging snowstorm, he makes it known to her that under no circumstance will he allow the compromising situation to force him to wed a blind woman.
There is more brewing then the love they both try to avoid. Tarass is on a mission. He intends to seek revenge against the person responsible for his parents’ brutal deaths, while also faced with two murders that must be solved, a myth that has woken and frightened his clan and must be put to rest, and a man who is intent on taking Snow away from him.
In the end, the truth that is discovered is far different than what Tarass could have ever imagined and the only thing that matters to him is Snow. There isn’t anything he won’t do to save her.
There’ll be a nice fire in the hearth and a hot cider to warm you.”

“I look forward to it, Finn,” Snow said, trying not to let fear creep into her voice as she spoke loudly to be heard over the swirling snow and wind.

“I’m going to tie this rope from my horse to yours so we don’t lose each other. With a blinding snowstorm like this one, it’s easy to get separated and we wouldn’t want that to happen.”

“No, Finn, I wouldn’t want that,” she said, keeping her voice raised just as he did.

“Worry not, lassie, I’ll get you home,” Finn shouted and patted her arm to reassure her.

Thaw’s head poked out from Snow’s fur-lined cloak to give a quick bark.

“Right you are, Thaw. You keep Snow safe,” Finn called out.

Snow hugged Thaw against her, the pup having sprouted a good bit in the last month, but she still didn’t want him wandering on his own in a snowstorm.

“We’re all set, next stop… home,” Finn said cheerfully, giving his left arm a good rub. “Old wounds can pain in the cold. Can’t wait for that warm fire myself and a tankard of ale.” He laughed as he walked to his horse.

Snow listened, his laughter caught by the swirling snow to drift away as he disappeared in the wildly falling snow. She recalled what Finn looked like, a big, thick, strong man and a fine warrior. She remembered how he had scooped her up with one arm when she was a wee bairn and how his whole body would shake with laughter. She felt safe with Finn and she knew he would see her home safely.

When she and Finn had left her sister Willow’s home the snow had been falling lightly, a dusting on the ground. They hadn’t been on the road long when the snow began to pour down around them.

She couldn’t see anything in front of her. Not that she could see anyway, having lost her sight in a fire about a year ago now. She had been so happy when some of her sight had begun to return, leaving her to see gray shadows. It took time to grow accustomed to it, since she had felt as if ghosts constantly surrounded her, never able to see anyone or anything clearly. She would recall what they looked like, as she had done with Finn, but anyone unfamiliar to her left her feeling uncomfortable and vulnerable.

Her two sisters, Willow and Sorrell, had helped tremendously, but they both had wed and had their own homes now, Sorrell living a distance away and Willow living not that far, a walk that would take less than an hour, but not in the dead of winter and certainly not in a snowstorm.

Willow and her husband, Slatter, had suggested she stay when light snow had begun to fall. But she had already stayed a week to help her sister settle into a new home. It was time she returned home and allowed the couple time to themselves.

Her visit also had allowed her half-brother James time with Eleanor, who had helped look after her when Willow had gone to visit Sorrell. She was a lovely young woman who James had taken to on first sight. Eleanor had equally been taken with him and love had blossomed quickly. A wedding was being talked about and she couldn’t be happier for James and Eleanor.

There would never be a wedding for her. No man would want a blind wife. It saddened her at times, especially since she had always dreamed of having lots of children to fill a home with laughter and love. Now she would spend her days going from her sisters’ homes to her home with James and Eleanor and enjoying the nieces and nephews that would come along.

Willow was already with child and would deliver in the summer and she would be there to help whatever way she could. Not that Willow would need much help, since she was a skilled healer growing even more skilled with time.

Snow tucked her hood down to keep the snow from whipping at her face. The snowstorm seemed to grow worse by the minute. She worried that Finn was having a difficult time maneuvering his way through the blinding snow that had to be accumulating rapidly on the ground, his pace having begun to slow to almost a crawl.

When her horse came to a stop, she grew even more concerned. Had Finn decided the snowstorm was far too dangerous to continue on? Would they need to seek shelter? She waited anxiously to see what he would say.

Thaw suddenly popped his head out of her cloak and gave a bark.

“It’s all right, Thaw,” she said, trying to calm him. “We’ve stopped for a moment.”
Will he ever speak the truth to her? And will she ever believe him?
Willow is the dependable, sensible sister and, due to her mum’s tutelage, has become a fine healer. She’s on her way home from visiting her sister Sorrell when the small troop escorting her is attacked. She’s taken prisoner and lowered down into a hole in the ground where a male prisoner is being kept. She has no idea what awaits her and all the reasoning in the world isn’t going to help her.
Slatter is a scoundrel and a good-for-nothing. He’s a liar, far from dependable, has no common sense, and is the one responsible for a fire that was started on Macardle land. He’s a man of fine features and many a woman has lost her heart to him. Or is there more to the tales about Slatter than anyone knows?
Thrown together and forced to marry under bizarre circumstances, Slatter and Willow make the most of their situation until things can be made right. And for the first time in her life Willow finds herself not being at all sensible and Slatter finds himself wanting more than he ever thought possible.
Danger threatens both their lives along with an old secret waiting to be revealed and instead of following her steadfast common sense, Willow allows herself to follow her heart and does something others warn her against… she trusts Slatter.
Will Slatter disappoint her or will love conquer all?
She kept her hand clamped over her mouth fearful of gasping in fright and her eyes were spread so wide since the attack had begun that she feared she’d never get them closed again. Her heart pounded mercilessly in her chest and fear trembled her body. She wanted to turn away, not watch the brutal battle, but she couldn’t. It wasn’t wise. She had to watch, had to see what happened… had to run if needed.

Lord Ruddock of the Clan Northwick, her sister Sorrell’s husband, had sent a troop of twenty of his warriors to escort her home. They were only a day away from arriving at the Clan Macardle. It had been difficult bidding her sister Sorrell farewell until they got to visit again, but she was happy with her husband and her new home and that had made Willow’s leave-taking a bit easier. Besides, her sister Snow needed her, an accident having blinded her some time ago. She could see shadows now, but no more, and Willow wondered if it was even more frightening to constantly have shadows surrounding you and not know who they were than living in complete darkness. Though, she had left her sister in good and capable hands, her step-brother, James. was to look after her as well as a new servant, Eleanor. Still, she was eager to return home to Snow and tend to her needs.

She cringed as the clash of metal grew louder and men fell to the ground wounded. Fright prickled her skin as badly as the thorny leaves of the bushes that concealed her. Her breath caught in her throat as she watched William, the warrior who had insisted she run and hide and stay hidden until he came for her, fall to the ground, blood running from his head down along the side of his face.

He wouldn’t be coming for her.

Ruddock’s warriors fought bravely, but they were outnumbered. It hadn’t appeared that way at first, less than a dozen men had been spied heading their way, but William had been cautious and she was glad he had been. More than two dozen men had descended on the troop after the fighting had begun.

It was obvious the men who attacked them were mercenaries, men for hire. There was no color plaid that united them as a clan and they were ferocious warriors. Their battle roars alone could shiver the devil himself.

Willow couldn’t help but wonder why they had attacked. Mercenaries never did anything without some type of reward being involved. Ruddock had had problems when he and Sorrell had first returned to his home, but they had been settled. So it didn’t seem reasonable to think this attack could have to do with Ruddock? She and the warriors carried no coin, nothing of value. What then could they possibly want?

Willow eased her hand off her mouth and watched as the last of Ruddock’s warriors were disarmed and made to kneel on the ground. She was relieved to see that most of the warriors while wounded were alive, though William had yet to move.

A man, of good height and size, with bright red eyebrows as bushy as his bright red beard and wearing a dark shirt and dark plaid stepped in front of the kneeling warriors.

“Where is she?” the man demanded.

Willow’s brow shot up. Was he asking about her?

Not one of the warriors responded.

“More afraid of what Lord Ruddock would do to you than anyone of us if you surrender her,” the man said and burst out in a hardy laugh, the other mercenaries joining him. “Can’t say I blame you. The man is a barbarian.” He let loose with another burst of laughter.

The red-haired man turned to his cohorts. “We’ll get nothing from them.” He looked back at the warriors, then scanned the area beyond them. “She couldn’t have gone far.” He scratched at his beard. “I’m too tired to give chase.” He turned to look at his men again and they all agreed with nods and ayes, calling him by name.

“Aye, Beck!”

Willow gave thought to running, but that wouldn’t be wise. Besides, she doubted she could untangle herself from the thorny bush. She stayed put and listened, fearing this would not end well for her.

Beck raised his voice as he called out, “Hear me well, lassie, show yourself or I’ll kill these warriors one by one until you do.”

Willow didn’t doubt he would do as he said and what choice was left to her anyway? She would never let another die if she was able to save them.

Beck gave a nod to one of his men and he raised his sword and approached the first warrior in line.
She runs from a forced marriage. He runs from lies. They both run from love.
"No! Absolutely not! Never! He dictates and drinks until drunk. I’d kill him before our wedding day has ended."
Sorrell let’s her step-brother know that she wants no part of the marriage he arranged for her. Unfortunately, the Clan Macardle is in dire straits and this marriage would prove beneficial. Besides, it’s not like there’s a line of suitors vying for her. She’s a spitfire, though you would never know it with her petite size. Unafraid and strongminded, Sorrell lets nothing stand in her way. Not even the giant of a man who arrives at Macardle keep looking for shelter and food for a couple of days.
John is surprised by the wee woman’s fearlessness, by her foolishness, and by her beauty. She gets herself into more difficult situations than he thought possible. But it is none of his concern. He is there only for a few days, then he’ll be gone. His life has been a hellish nightmare for the past two years. He is looking for a place where he can be alone to think and decide what to do next. He needs to find out who is responsible for all the lies and deceit that has torn his life apart.
John finds himself protecting Sorrell, more like saving her time and again, and Sorrel finds herself relying on him, something she rarely, if ever, does with anyone. Chaos breaks loose when the pair find themselves in a compromising position. But the chaos is nothing to what Sorrell finds out about John’s true identity.
Sorrel must face leaving her sisters, settling in a castle with a husband she’s not sure she knows, with a father-in-law who put a price on his son’s head, all while trying to figure out who wants her dead. Could things get any more complicated? Enter the horde of barbarians. Nothing is as it seems, but Sorrell is fearless… until she faces true fear.

Her younger sister Snow’s one cheek was smeared with mud and mud stained her green tunic at her chest and stomach. Mud balls. Someone had thrown mud balls at her. It was enough to make Sorrell want to kill the person. It was malicious and downright rotten to sling mud at a blind woman.

Snow wasn’t completely blind, though she might as well have been since she was barely able to see shadows, leaving her far too vulnerable. She had no way of protecting herself against what she couldn’t see. With a slight improvement in her vision, after a fire had completely blinded her months ago, there was hope that she would one day fully regain her sight. Until then, Sorrell and Willow had made sure to be their youngest sister’s eyes as best they could.

“That is something we can discuss later, after we see to tending Snow,” Willow said.

Sorrell ignored the slight shake of Willow’s head, warning her that now was not the time for such a question. Sorrell didn’t agree.

She approached her two sisters, her anger mounting when she spotted the spreading red blotch beneath the mud Willow was cleaning off Snow’s face with a gentle wipe of a wet cloth.

“Not later… now,” Sorrell insisted, stopping by the bed where Snow stood. “If whoever did this to Snow is not taken to task for it, he will feel free to do it again.”

Sorrell often wondered how Willow could remain calm and reasonable under circumstances that obviously called for immediate retribution. She always appeared unruffled, taking in all that went on and approaching it with a sway and bend like the willow tree she was named after. No matter what storm hit, Willow remained solid and strong, doing what she felt best after considering the circumstances.

It could be that she was the oldest of the three of them and some would say the wisest. Or was it that she stood a good head over Sorrell and Snow, something not difficult to do since they were both petite, taking after their mother. Whereas, Willow got what height she had over them from their da. However, it was Sorrell who got his commanding nature. Willow had plain, gentle features while Snow was the beauty out of the three of them. Sweet and eager to help others, Snow was loved by everyone in the clan, though now there was a cautiousness about her that had not been there before. But how could she not be more cautious when she could see only shadows? A place where dangers lurked.

Danger had certainly lurked there today and Sorrell had every intention of finding that shadow and beating it senseless.

“It was Peter from the Clan MacLoon,” Snow said, bringing an end to the disagreement between Willow and Sorrell. “He called out his usual taunts, but I was stunned when I felt the first blow.”

“No one stepped up to help you?” Sorrell asked. “And what were you doing out alone?”

“You know better than to condemn anyone, Sorrell. There isn’t one in the clan who wouldn’t come to Snow’s defense,” Willow chided.

“Then why didn’t someone step forward?” Sorrell demanded. “And again, why were you alone?”

Snow’s chin dipped a bit, her glance going to her feet to avoid looking at her sisters even though she couldn’t see them.

Sorrow filled Willow’s eyes and Sorrell regretted that she had asked.

“You went to Mum and Da’s graves again, didn’t you?” Sorrell said softly.

Snow raised her head. “I felt the need.”

Willow slipped her arm around Snow and Sorrell joined in the hug, the three lassies holding on tight to one another as they had done since losing their parents. They had lost their mum shortly after the fire and their da months later. It still was difficult to accept the fact that both were gone, but they had one another. They would always have one another.

Sorrell laid a gentle hand briefly on Snow’s red glowing cheek after seeing it up close and grew angrier when she felt the heat that stung it. She wished the simple touch could take away her sister’s suffering. “That must have hurt.”

“It stung. At first, I had no idea what Peter had thrown at me.” She paused briefly and reluctantly admitted, “I heard him laugh.”

“Laugh? He laughed after hitting you?” Sorrell asked, heat rushing up to stain her cheeks as bright red as her sister’s.

“Something he has done many times,” Snow reminded. “After a few moments, I saw a shadow draw close and I raised my hands to protect my face, but that time the mud ball hit my chest. The third blow followed soon after. Then someone yelled, ‘Leave her alone, Peter.’”

Willow turned to Sorrell. “You should go inform James. He will see that Peter is made to pay for this.”
