Cillian:
I went away to visit my half-brother, Keenan, and when I came back I saw her. She was walking down the street, her hair blowing in the wind like when we were teenagers.
She was my everything, and then she became nothing. I walked out of her life because mine would destroy her . . . but her memory haunts me with every corner I turn.
All I see is her, and now I’m at war with my mind. I shouldn’t want her. I shouldn’t want her to be in danger, but she’s the only woman I’ve ever loved.
Mia:
I was in love once, but the man who held it shattered my heart. Imagine my surprise when I move to a new city and see him standing across the street. I turned around and walked off as quickly as I could, but I felt Cillian’s eyes on me.
Cillian broke me in a way I could never fully explain. He destroyed my idea of love, and took part of me with him when he broke up with me. Sure, we were kids, but that didn’t matter. He was the only person who never let me down–until he did.
Now here I am. I just signed a new work contract and I’ll be in this city for three years. I figure I can escape Cillian. Only, I can’t. He’s everywhere, and when he wants something he doesn’t stop until he gets it.
I suppose that’s my own fault for not doing proper research. I didn’t know she knew about her bloodline but chose to stay away from them. Part of me being with Aisling was because of her royal blood. I’ve put myself in situations with mafia women for a reason, to create an empire that no one will want to fuck with.

What I never expected was for a woman with mafia blood to fall into something tragic, something that could’ve killed our unborn child if medical professionals didn’t intervene. She was careless, and the only reason I even know is that for some unknown reason, Aisling put me as her emergency contact. It’s the very reason the hospital called me. She must’ve told them I was the father of her child, but I won’t know a damn thing until I’m there.

I sit in the back of a town car I chartered when I landed in Belfast. It’s already driven through the center of the city and is heading toward a lower-class area. I narrow my eyes as I scan through the windows, unsure if this is where we’re supposed to be going.

“Are you sure this is the way?” I ask the man driving me.

“Yes, sir, it is,” he tells me as he focuses on the road ahead.

Hmm, odd. I settle back against the leather seat and pass the time by taking in the scenery. Even so, all I can think about is what the physician told me over the phone. How my son was born six weeks early, how they didn’t know if he was going to make it through the night. I took the first flight from Italy to be here, praying to God that he doesn’t take my child.

I blame myself for this. I’ve been gallivanting around the world, handling my family’s business, building a better name for myself in the process, and for what? He could’ve died. If I would’ve been here, keeping an eye on Aisling, would he even be in this situation? Would he be in the NICU? I won’t ever know the answer, but I’ll do what I must to ensure my son makes it through the night and every night thereafter.

The giant ‘H’ is lit up in the front of the hospital. “Here we are, sir. I’ll be parked in the garage across the street. Give me a ring when you’re coming down, and I’ll meet you here,” the driver tells me as he pulls into the ‘c’ shaped drop-off area. He exits and opens the door for me.

“Perfect. Do you have a card?” I question him, and he hands me a business card with his number. I head for the mechanical doors, and heaviness washes over my shoulders. My gut begins to coin in my stomach, and I dread what news I’m going to walk into.

There’s a desk in front of me, and a woman with long, blonde hair sits behind it. “Good evening, can I be of service?” She blinks her eyes a few times, likely uncertain why I’m here at this hour.

“Good evening. Dr. McGonigal called me a couple hours ago. He informed me I should come to the hospital as soon as I could.”

“Okay, I’ll get everything done as quickly as I can for you. What’s your name? Let me ring him, and I’ll be with you in just a moment. All right?” Kindness comes over her eyes, and I’m certain she knows what this means. I imagine parents being called into the NICU is never a good thing.

“I’m Bruno Bernardi, and my ex-girlfriend, Aisling, is upstairs with our son.”

“All right, thank you.”

I do as the woman requests and take a seat, but I’m only there a moment before she calls me back over. “I have your pass ready for you, Mr. Bernardi.”

I walk back over to her desk, and she hands me a sticker to put on my suit. I’d hate to ruin it by putting this on it, but if it’s how I get to see my son, I’ll have to suck it up. “For what it’s worth, I’m sending my well wishes to your son, Mr. Bernardi.”

“Thank you. I appreciate it.”

“Of course. Now, you’ll head down the hall here and make a sharp right. You keep going until you get to the lift. The NICU is on the 5th floor, so once you’re up there, you’ll speak to the charge nurse, and she’ll fetch the good doctor for you.”

“Perfect. Thank you.” I begin to follow her advice, walking down the hallway until I make a sharp right. Then I walk until I think I’m going the wrong way because the hallway doesn’t seem to end until it does. I get to the elevators and press the arrow that goes up. Fortunately for me, it takes but a moment for the doors to open. I walk inside, tap the number five, and then wait for the elevator to take me up.
She's going to pay for the ultimate sin... Defying me.
JULIAN
My hate for the Esposito family goes back a decade. When I was eight years old, Francesca snubbed me. Back then, I was a nobody. But then Bruno Bernardi adopted me into his famiglia. Now I have money. Power. And my debtors pay for their sins... in blood.
Francesca will experience the full extent of my wrath. We're classmates now, but the school won't protect her.
At The University, money rules over all. And Francesca's got nothing but her name now... that, and a target between her pretty little legs.
FRANCESCA
When I was a little girl, I made a fatal mistake. I offended Julian, now one of the Bernardi heirs.
I was a bratty little girl then, but now, I have nothing. Watching my family fall apart and our riches being taken away from us has broken me.
I thought I could deal with it all. Until Julian. He wants to degrade and humiliate me. He wants to destroy me.
He wants to play wicked little games to bring me to my knees and pledge my allegiance.
But I will not kneel for him. I'd rather take his torment than admit he's my Master. He can't break me. Or can he?
****Julian's Torment is the third book of the Mafia Heirs series. All books can be read as standalones. This is a dark mafia romance.

Father seems pleased two of his sons are now married and the house is lulled into a false sense of security. But I should have known it wasn't going to last long. And the next bombshell that drops on the Bernardi famiglia concerns me, embroiling me into a scandal Father will kill to prevent from happening.

I'm fucking hungover from being out most of the previous night. It ended with me and three girls in my bed, and my guard escorted them off the premises before Father could see them. I'm sure he wouldn't take lightly to more of my womanizing – he's already reprimanded me for it several times.

That day, Father calls me into his office. I saunter in confidently and take a seat on the opposite side of Father's desk, reaching for one of his cigars displayed on the polished wood.

"Are you even going to ask if you can have one?" Father raises his brows at me.

I smirk in response, not giving him an answer. Instead, I clip the end and ignore Father's watchful gaze as I start to smoke it. I can tell he doesn't approve, but my rebellious nature pushes me to keep going, maybe just to get a rise out of him.

"We need to talk, Julian." Father heaves a sigh and waves his hand in front of his face to get rid of the smoke.

"What about?"

"You." Father's piercing gaze would make anyone nervous, but not me. I know I can sweet-talk him out of anything that's coming. Even though Father would never admit it, I know I'm his favorite of all his sons. He has a soft spot for me, and I fully intend on milking the fact to the best of my abilities.

"What about me?"

"You're becoming a problem," Father grunts.

"In what way?"

"Let's see." He taps his finger against his chin. "You've fucked half the maids in the house. You keep getting into fights and getting yourself embroiled in scandals. I'm this close to punishing you accordingly."

I smirk, knowing full well this is just talk. It's not like Father would do anything that wouldn't benefit me. He cares about me too much – he always saw me as his little pet project, and that's not about to change now, no matter the amount of merda I get myself into.

"You're not taking this seriously at all," Father says next. "What do I have to do to earn some respect from you, Julian?"

"You have my respect," I reply firmly, and it's true. I've always admired Father. But that doesn't mean I'm going to change my ways just to suit his agenda.

"You have a funny way of showing it." Father glares with contempt at the cigar in my hand. Finally, I put it out and give him a look as if to say, are you happy now? He nods and leans back in his chair, another sigh ripping itself from his lips. He looks weary and tired. "Julian, I don't want to punish you. But you're not giving me much of a choice."

I don't know what my punishment would entail, but I'm sure I wouldn't like it. It would also be the first time Father would discipline me. I know he's been lenient with me, especially compared to the rest of my brothers. But I can't help arguing further, digging myself into an even deeper hole.

"Father, I won't let you down. Give me another chance."

"You're on very fucking thin ice," Father grunts. "If you disappoint me again, I will have no other choice but send you to The University."

"The University?" I furrow my brows, unsure of what he means. "That’s nothing but a myth."

"It’s not myth, son. It’s a special training place for mafia heirs," Father says, piercing me with his gaze. "It's where mafia children get sent to be whipped into shape."

"Like a boarding school?"

Father nods. "It's a three-year program."

"But I already finished high school."

"Not that it's done you any good," Father barks. "You're terribly behaved, you fuck anything that moves, and you don't have any family values."

I want to be offended by his words, but he's right.

My heart has withered over the years. A lifetime of disappointments and unfairness will do that to you, I suppose. For most of my life, Bruno Bernardi has been the one bright spot in my life. The man who saved me from almost certain death now sits before me, deeply disappointed in my actions.

A part of me wants to apologize, but it's outweighed by the fiercely independent side of me that wants to fight anyone who goes up against me. I remain silent, my lips firmly pressed together as I study Father with my gaze.

"Aren't you going to say something?" Father grunts. "You could at least defend yourself."

I know I'm being followed.

I can hear the footsteps behind me, soft as they are. I don't react to them. I pretend I haven't noticed the person sneaking out after me. I'll confront them soon enough if they keep this shit up.

Striding through the estate, I smile tightly at all the people I'm supposed to be mingling with. I mutter hellos and shake hands until I'm finally outside in the open. The fresh, cool night air hits me like a slap to the face. I could barely breathe in there. These mafia gatherings are just a fucking show. People here are merely competing to see who has more power.

I can still feel the person behind me, quietly following in my footsteps. I keep walking, across the garden to the maze. It's been here for as long as I can remember, but I'm the only one of my siblings that gives a shit. I like the maze. I figured out a way out of it when I was a kid, and even now I find comfort in letting myself get lost amongst the hedges.

Weaving my path through the grass, I keep walking faster and faster until the footsteps go silent. I smirk to myself, knowing my stalker is now lost in the maze. I retrace my steps, one by one, until I find the offending bastard who seems dead-set on knowing what I'm doing.

"Ow!" I bump into the figure a little too hard and send them flying to the floor. It's a girl, with pretty, golden blonde hair that reaches her butt. She looks up at me, eyes wide and hurt. I smirk at her, not offering her my hand to help her up. "What the hell was that for?” she whines.

"You were following me," I hiss. "Who the fuck are you?"

She picks herself up with a huff. She has green eyes. She's pretty for a kid, like a doll. "I'm Nicoletta Carlucci. How can you not recognize me?"

Even though her name strikes a chord, I don't show it. Instead, I take a step forward and growl, "I don't make it my business to know the name of every lost, dumb little girl at my father's party."

Instantly, tears well in her gaze and I roll my eyes. I don't have time for her drama.

"Why the fuck are you following me?"

"I don't know," she shrugs. "I'm not supposed to be here. But everyone was talking about business, so I slipped away."

"You shouldn't be out here," I mutter. "Don't you know it's inappropriate to be alone with me? Your papa would have a fucking heart attack."

"You're Ryder Bernardi, aren't you?" she says. "Our fathers are working on an alliance together, did you know that? Maybe one day we'll get married."

I can’t help but laugh. "Doubtful. You're just a kid. And I'm not interested."

The words seem to hurt her, and she blanches, staring at the grass beneath our feet. "It's not up to us, I guess."

The girl is sweet. But she's too young and my feelings for her seem more brotherly than anything else. "I don't want to ruin your little prince charming fantasy, but you need to get back to the house and stop following strangers around the estate. Got it?"

She shrugs, so I take a step forward and tip her head back, forcing her to look into my eyes. She averts her gaze. She can't even handle looking at me.

"How old are you?" I bark at her.

"I'm thirteen," she whispers.

"Too young."

"Too young for what?"

"All of this bullshit," I grind out. "Go back to your papa. Tell him to protect you. You're going to get hurt without someone to watch over you."

"Can you show me the way out of the maze?" she whispers, and I nod, grabbing her by the arm.

The last thing I fucking need is to get in trouble for being around a prized possession like the Carlucci heiress.

Of-fucking-course I've heard of Nicoletta. Her father, Gustavo, must be somewhere nearby. I've never met the man but word travels fast on the island and I know he's just as influential as Father in our crooked world of darkness.

Leading the girl out of the maze, she comes to a stop in the gardens and keeps her gaze trained on me. "Please, you have to help me."

"Help you?" I laugh. "What could a mafia princess like you possibly need help with?"

"My papa." Nicoletta swallows thickly. "He... he doesn't let me go anywhere. He locks me up. I've never been to a party like this. I think I’m only here so they can convince some man to marry me."

"How is that my problem?"

"Don't you feel bad?"

"Why would I?" I shrug. "I don't know you. Your problems are your own."

She grabs me by the hand. As her eyes meet mine, I can see they're panicked, swimming with worry. "There's something else."
She broke that promise. Now it’s time to teach her a lesson. Marzia thinks she’s going to celebrate her arranged marriage at a masked ball.

"Hey, it's the outcast! Outcast, reietto!"

Laughter follows the cruel words, filling the streets of the docks with its melodic tone. I grit my teeth together and do my best to ignore the mean boys like papa told me to. But they're determined to be heard, especially one of them, the one who hates me the most. When I look up from the water, a boy a couple years older than me is standing above me, smirking down with a disgusted expression. Like I'm nothing but trash.

Quickly, I raise myself until I'm standing up and we're facing-off. I can take Vitto. I don't care if he's a Donati. He's got nothing on me.

"Got a problem, cazzo?" I hiss at him.

He curls his lips up in disgust. "Dirty mouth on a dirty kid. What are you doing here, Bernardi? I thought I told you and your brothers not to come to the docks anymore."

"You don't own the world, Donati." We face off and he smirks at me. He knows he's got a one up on me. He may not owe the world, but his family owns the docks, which makes them royalty in Palermo, and he knows that as well as I do.

"You're treading on dangerous ground," he grinds out. "Watch your step around here, reietto. Wouldn't want to hurt yourself. This is a dangerous place, especially when someone like me doesn't want you here."

"Fuck you," I hiss. "You don't tell me what to do."

"My papa tells your papa what to do, though," he smirks at me. "And he won't like hearing about this one bit."

I stare at him sullenly, knowing full-well how right he is. Papa did tell me to be on my best behavior while he went for a meeting in the offices here at the docks. He won't be pleased to know I acted out. Again. I swallow thickly, knowing full well I can't fight this boy. But dio, the temptation is there. I want to smash his face into the dirty ground.

"So, reietto. You better get the fuck out of here before I make you." Vitto steps forward, his face a menacing snarl as he advances on me. "You're nothing but trash, Adrian. You're not even a real Italian. Papa told me all about you. You're not even Bernardi blood."

I take a deep breath like papa taught me. I count to five. But none of it helps, and before I can stop myself, I've launched my body at the older boy, fists hammering against his chest. I'm smaller than him, but that also means I'm quicker. And I can tell Vitto doesn't have any fighting experience, unlike me. Growing up with four brothers will do that.

His screams ring out in the docks, and suddenly, the figures of four other boys round the corner. Merda. It's Vitto's gang of preppy friends. I can take one of them, but I can't take five. Still, my brain doesn't accept this fact, and as Vitto's cries ring out in the alleyway I've dragged him to, two of the other boys drag me off him. I'm kicking, spitting and screaming as they hold me back and Vitto advances on me with maddened eyes.

"Who the fuck do you think you are?" he snarls at me. "My father will hear about this."

"Pussy," I smirk at him. "Letting your papa do your dirty work for you. What a weakling."

I can tell even the other boys are nervous, knowing Vitto won't let me go easily. And as he approaches me with a wicked grin, I know I'll be counting my broken bones in no time. But still I can't force myself to stop. The moment he's close enough, I spit at him, watching with dark satisfaction as my saliva dribbles down his cheek. He wipes it away with disgust and throws the first punch.

I don't make a fucking sound, but we all hear bones crunching as the punch lands on my nose. Instead of responding to Vitto's pathetic attempt to hurt me, I stare at him with burning hatred in my eyes. "Is that all you fucking got?"

"Cazzo," he mutters, preparing to deal another punch when a timid voice interrupts him.

"Basta!"

I raise my head, ignoring the drip of blood down my face. That's when I see her for the first time. She's wearing a red dress with polka dots and black lacquered shoes. Her hair is neatly braided into a long plait falling down her back, with tendrils escaping the tightness and framing her pretty face. She's young. Too young to be here, and too young for Vitto to listen to her. And yet the moment she speaks up, we're all enamored. The boys holding me loosen their grip on my arms and I struggle out of their grasp, groaning as I reach to my broken nose.
