A painful past
Deke Murphy and Maddie Hall should never have worked as a couple in high school. She was the class valedictorian and he the jock who took nothing seriously…except her. Together they formed an amazing team, and young love blossomed into something that strengthened them both. Until tragedy struck and Deke made a sacrifice that split them up forever.
An unexpected reunion
Seventeen years later, Maddie is living her dream working for a brilliant tech guru in the beauty of Southern California. She’s made a life for herself and it’s first class all the way. She rarely thinks of the jock who dumped her all those years ago. But when Maddie realizes her boss might be part of an international conspiracy, she can’t deny Deke might be her best bet to solve the mystery. Her one-time sweetheart works for one of the world’s premiere security and investigative firms. She’ll hire him and prove to herself their relationship could never have worked.
A dangerous future
As Maddie and Deke begin to uncover her boss’s secrets, they can’t deny the chemistry that has reignited. But before they can explore the connection growing between them, they must survive the deadly forces hunting them down.
It was off the rack but had a designer label, and she’d had it tailored to fit her perfectly. She planned to tell everyone she met that it was just something she had in her closet. No big deal, really. This dress was simply what she wore now that she was in Los Angeles and had a dream job in big tech.

She’d spent half a month’s salary on the dress, shoes, and handbag because she needed armor. After all, she was walking into her own personal war zone, and there was an enemy combatant to deal with.

Deke Murphy was back in town on leave, and she was going to let the man know exactly what he’d missed when he’d walked away from her. When he’d dumped her and made the biggest error of his life.

I think it would be a mistake, Maddie. I love you, but I can’t be the reason you give up a scholarship to Yale. You have to go.

That day had come back to her in vivid detail. Not that she couldn’t remember the worst day of her life, but being here in town brought a certain sharpness to every memory. She couldn’t forget that they’d been sitting on her front porch when the man she’d expected to marry had told her college was more important than their little high school romance. She’d explained that she could defer and they would find a school for him to go to, but he’d been firm. He’d stood up and walked away, and they’d barely spoken all summer long.

It had been an awful way to break up. He’d enforced his will and proven he’d never truly loved her.

Now he would see that he’d walked away from a slot machine before it paid off. Big time.

“How do you walk in those shoes?” her mother asked as they strode along the walkway between the gravel parking lot and the prefab building that hadn’t been updated in what had to be twenty years.

“It’s easy.” It wasn’t. Those shoes hurt. Human toes weren’t meant to form a perfect triangle, nor were they meant to arch the way these five-inchers did. But they had that sexy red sole that would let everyone know she was successful.

She was important and she’d escaped Calhoun, California. Deke Murphy had been right when he’d said she was far too smart to stay in their rural town where any party of size had to be held in a park or the rec center because that was how small they were.

“Well, it doesn’t look easy.” Her mom stopped before the double doors and gave her a once-over. “You’re overdressed for this, you know that, right? You’re dressed for some red-carpet premiere, not an eighty-year-old woman’s birthday party.”

Her mother obviously didn’t know how Hollywood stars dressed. “It’s barely a cocktail dress, Mom. And I told you it’s all I have.”

It wasn’t, but she would get the lecture of a lifetime if her mom knew why she was wearing it. She would talk about humility and forgiveness and how it would set her free and shit. Of course if she’d seen the price tag, that would be an entirely different lecture. It didn’t matter that she made an insane amount of money for her age. One still shouldn’t ever pay more than $89.99 for any piece of clothing. The very specific price was due to the amount her mom had paid for her beloved winter coat with faux fur lining.

“Well, it makes me feel dowdy, but I probably am dowdy.” Her mom reached up and brushed something off her shoulder. “You look stunning, Maddie. I’m being a prickly old broad, and I promised I wouldn’t be. Of course I promised myself because my mother was a prickly old broad, and now I realize why she was. Menopause is hell, baby. Don’t do it.”

Her mom didn’t look so bad. She looked damn good for Calhoun, but there weren’t many places to shop out here.

Not that Maddie generally spent her time shopping. The dress was a lie, but a necessary one. She didn’t want Deke Murphy to know that most of the time she wore jeans and T-shirts because no one cared what she looked like, only that her calculations were correct. The team she was on generally lived in pop culture T-shirts, track pants, and sneakers. She was one of two women, and if she’d shown up in a dress like this the men on her team would ask who she was and where she’d taken Maddie. Jerky Joe with the 180 IQ and no social manners would stare at her boobs trying to figure out which one was bigger and would have an equation to show why one breast was obviously better than the other.
A man with everything
Michael Malone seems to have it all. A wealthy, loving family. A job that fulfills him. Friends he can count on. But something is missing. He’s spent years watching his brother and close friends get married and start families, but it hasn’t happened for him. When an assignment comes up to investigate fallen Hollywood star Vanessa Hale, he jumps at the chance. She’s gorgeous and potentially deadly. Playing the spy game with her might be just the thing to take his mind off his troubles.
A woman with nothing left to lose
Vanessa Hale had big dreams that ended in scandal. She returned home with nothing but heartache and the desire to find her mother’s killer. The trail points to someone at Lodge Corp, so taking a job with Julian Lodge’s mysterious company is her best option for finding the truth. While she hunts for a killer during the day, she hopes to find some solace at night in The Club. Meeting the gorgeous, sexy and seemingly kind Michael Malone, their chemistry sparks in a way she’s never felt before, and Vanessa thinks maybe her luck has finally changed.
A love that might save them both
When Michael’s true motives are revealed, she will have to find a way to forgive his betrayal. The killer has made Vanessa their next target. Working together and stopping this monster is the only chance for them to have the real love they both deserve.

Michael Malone just wished it wasn’t happening to him. He’d been somewhat excited about the idea of a new assignment when it had first been floated by him, but now he wondered if life wouldn’t be easier if he avoided this particular job.

“He doesn’t even eat carbs,” a deep voice argued. “These babies will be wasted on him.”

“He eats carbs,” a feminine voice replied.

“No, he doesn’t. Julian Lodge lives off the blood of his enemies, baby. That’s it. That’s how he stays all lean and predatory. Also, should we be having this meeting in the light of day?” Yep. That was his boss. Ian Taggart.

Michael had been working for McKay-Taggart Security for…had it really been the majority of his adult life? He’d started out—like most MT employees—in the military. The Navy had led to the SEALS and the SEALs to the CIA. The CIA had turned into a clusterfuck of a job, and so he’d landed here and stayed.

He liked his job, enjoyed his team. So why the fuck had he started to think about quitting?

“He’s not a vampire.” Despite the fact that he couldn’t see Charlotte Taggart, he heard the smile in her voice. She always seemed genuinely amused by her husband’s antics. Which was a good thing because there were a lot of them.

“Think about it.” The man most people called Big Tag chuckled. “Have you ever seen him in the light of day?”

“Yes. Many times,” Charlotte insisted.

“Never even once.” Big Tag continued like his wife had replied in the way he wanted her to. But that was his boss. He plowed through life like a steamroller.

That wasn’t fair. A steamroller flattened things, and the truth of the matter was Big Tag tended to make life better for the people he met. The Taggarts were responsible for most of the good marriages around him. He’d recently been to one of the weddings Charlotte and Ian had a direct hand in.

How the hell had Hutch gotten married before him?

And when had he started to feel like a wallflower at some Regency ball? It wasn’t like he was on the shelf or something. He was a man in the prime of his life, and he wasn’t unattractive. It wasn’t like he hadn’t had some good shots. So why hadn’t they worked out? After a while a guy started to wonder.

He should never have agreed to watch movies with his mother after her surgery. She’d suffered a hard fall while riding around the ranch she and his dad lived on. Shoulder surgery had followed, and he’d taken his turn making sure she wasn’t alone. She’d made him sit through rom coms and a weird amount of Regency romantic drama, and now he was a Jane Austen character worried about his marital prospects.

“Is the big guy here yet?”

Michael turned, and Kyle Hawthorne was standing there. Kyle was a reminder that everyone was moving forward, including Michael’s ex-fiancée. She was marrying Kyle’s brother.

“No, he’s still fifteen minutes out.” And now his morning was complete because there she was. Tessa Santiago, soon-to-be Hawthorne. Never to be Malone because he’d been the dumbass who couldn’t love her the way she needed to be loved.

He was starting to wonder if he could love anyone. Maybe his twin had gotten all those genes. It was weird. All of his life he and JT had basically been in the same place, but the last several years had changed all of that. His identical twin had gotten married and now had two kids.

Michael was still drifting through life.

“I don’t get it. It’s like we’re entertaining the president or something.” Kyle glanced into the conference room. “Charlotte threatened unholy hell on anyone who ate the pastries before the client gets here. I saw Li taking Boomer out of the office because he doesn’t think he can stay away from a buffet. Is he a freak of nature or something? How the hell does he eat the way he does and not weigh a thousand pounds?”

“Boomer works out hard, and he’s got a freaky metabolism. And we didn’t do all this for the actual president,” Tessa pointed out. “All he got was some drive-through. But this is Julian Lodge. For Big Tag, he’s way more important than any president.”

“He’s intimidating.” Kyle frowned. “You know how Big Tag explodes at least twice a day? Julian is the guy who never explodes. He’s kept all that rage and hate inside for years, and one day it’s going to come out. You do not want to be standing in front of him then.”

Tessa rolled her eyes. “He’s a sweetheart. I think you’re projecting because you kind of defined yourself there, buddy.”
He loves the sweet life
Greg Hutchins is reluctantly adulting these days. He’s settled in his job, recently bought his first house, and has a network of friends he can call family. But there’s something missing in his life, and he can’t quite put his finger on it. When he’s assigned to a case that involves investigating a biochemical company, he meets a woman who’s sweeter than any candy. Maybe she’s just the thing to make him feel complete.
She’s ready for the future
Noelle LaVigne has faced plenty of tragedy in her life, but she’s on the right path now. Between her new job and settling into a new city, she’s got no time for dating or relationships. She’s worked hard to get where she is, and no man is going to push her off track. Except the minute Hutch crosses her path she can’t seem to think about anything but the handsome security expert. He’s there to find a corporate spy, but late-night work sessions make her think they’ve both found something much more meaningful.
A twist they never saw coming
When the case becomes dangerous, both of their futures are on the line. And when the bullets start flying, they will have to learn to trust in each other if they hope to survive.
It was late afternoon and the heat of the day was only broken by the nice wind coming off the water and the shade from the big cypress trees. She’d spent many an afternoon sitting under those trees and dreaming of her future.

Most of her young life she’d lived in New Orleans, but she’d always thought of Papillon as home.

She missed the bayou and her family, but she was kind of ready to be back in her apartment. Sure there were problems waiting for her in Dallas, but she was optimistic that she could solve them.

Even Madison’s murder, because she was almost certain her rival scientist’s death hadn’t been an accident.

Would Madison have tried to solve Noelle’s murder? Probably not. She’d been a genuinely terrible human being who’d tried to make Noelle’s life hell. Unfortunately, Noelle had been raised to rise above and all that, so she couldn’t look the other way.

And she was curious.

“Hey, sweetie. Do you want something to drink?” Her stepmother walked out from the house where the sound of the game playing rocked the living room. The LSU game was on the big screen, and if her father and his friends’ shouts were any indication, it was going well.

“I know I want something to drink.” Lila’s sister, Lisa, stepped out from behind her, putting a hand to her lower back.

An evil grin lit her stepmom’s face. “You get water. And stay away from the lemonade because I’m pretty sure Zep spiked it with vodka. You’ve got at least another six weeks before you can even think about taking a drink.”

Lisa was heavily pregnant with her first child. She and her husband, Remy, had taken their time. They’d been married for almost eight years when Lisa had announced she was having a baby. It had been fun to watch the big guy go pale at the thought. Lila was having a blast watching her youngest sister go through what she’d already been through twice.

Lisa put a hand on her belly. “I hope my husband is happy with one because this pregnancy stuff sucks.”

Lila chuckled. “Noelle, I want you to listen to your aunt for the next four or five years. Pregnancy is not for you. Until you’re a bit older, and then your dad is totally going to want grandkids.”

Now she was pretty sure she was the one going pale. “No.”

Lila pointed her way. “That is exactly what you should say. For now.” She glanced out over the backyard. “Boys, that Frisbee is meant to be thrown, not eaten.” Lila sighed. “I hope I’m right and that is a girl in your belly because boys…I’m lucky I still have hair. I was totally taken in with stories of how easy Noelle was. Then bammo, I spit out two boys and my life is one long test to see if I can keep two human beings alive. I’m a medical professional. It’s what I do every day, but those boys…Jason, do not try to ride the dog.”

Lila strode off as the boys started to chase each other, and inside the house she could hear the guys shouting their joy over someone catching a ball or something.

She’d never been into sports, but that hadn’t stopped her dad from finding ways to bond with her. Her small-town sheriff father had gone to way too many science fairs to mention. He’d become a STEM dad and put up with chemistry experiments in his bathroom through her teen years.

After the accident that had left her in a wheelchair, he’d supported her when she’d learned to walk again. He and her stepmom had given her the encouragement she’d needed to make her dreams come true, and that was why she came over on football days whenever she was in town.

“You doing okay, kiddo?” Lisa asked.

“I’m good. I’m enjoying watching the kids play.” Her much younger brothers were running around the backyard, swinging on the trees like the crazy little boys they were. She spent so much time in a lab it was good to get out and remember there was a whole world out here.

There was a world she could discover and explore and find out if she had a place in.

“Are you still feeling good about what we talked about?” Lisa kept her voice down. “Never mind. I can see you are.”

Because she was smiling. She could feel it on her face. “I’m excited.”

Lisa leaned over and patted her hand. “I’m excited for you, sweetie. You’re going to have fun and make some great new friends.”

Noelle went silent as her stepmom came back to the porch and checked the smoker that was currently cooking the meaty portion of the evening’s supper. “Those boys are going to give me a heart attack one of these days. Are you sure you can’t stay longer? It’s been nice to have you here.”
