Cold. Commanding. Ruthless.

There is only one thing Regent Malone cares about.
His family.
And he will do whatever is necessary to protect them.
Amass power, wealth, and fear.
Whatever it takes.
Because they are the only thing standing between him and the darkness.
Cross his family and feel his wrath.
No one is immune . . .
Not even a gorgeous brunette with more sass than self-preservation.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

Thirty-five years ago . . .

Eddie’s eye was melting.

Regent stared at the flames and fought against letting any emotion show. But he couldn’t stop his hands from clenching into fists.

A cold, dark feeling enveloped him as his father placed his hands on his shoulders.

“You can’t get attached, son. I know it’s a hard lesson to learn. But if you don’t care, you can’t get hurt. Understand?”

Regent nodded and looked away from the fireplace and the remains of his beloved teddy bear.

He headed upstairs to his bedroom, where he found a piece of paper sitting on the bed. It had a colorful scribble on it.

A picture from Victor.

Even though his brother was too young to realize what today was, it still felt good to get something on his fifth birthday.

Twenty-seven years ago . . .

Regent heard a scream and turned, looking through the window into the garden. His heart leapt as he saw Lottie lying on the ground.

Had she fallen out of the tree he’d told her not to climb? Where the hell was her nanny? Regent started to walk out of the study, needing to check on her.

“Where do you think you’re going, son?”

Freezing, he stared over at his father. The man who had given him life. And who was slowly trying to bleed the humanity out of him.

“Lottie hurt herself.”

“So?” his father asked coldly. “Your siblings will get hurt, but that isn’t your problem. Glenda will take care of her.”

Lottie was his daughter. His only daughter. She was three. She could have hurt herself badly.

But Laurent Malone didn’t care about anything but business—his legacy.

Regent’s siblings were just fodder to him—things to be used. Victor was to be Regent’s bodyguard. Jardin, his brains. Maxim, the charm.

And Lottie? Well, she was unplanned and a surprise. The first Malone girl to be born in years.

And ever since Regent first held her, she’d become the person he loved most in the world. Who he had to protect.

Lottie was his. And he would do whatever it took to keep her safe. Even if that meant having to pretend that she meant nothing to him in front of this evil, rotting piece of flesh that was his father.

“I thought I would go and tell her to stop screaming. It’s annoying.”

His father watched him. “Careful, son. A weakness can be used against you. Exploited. If you have someone you would do anything to protect, you can be easily manipulated. If Lottie is too much of a distraction for you, then I can just as soon make her disappear.”

He was going to be ill.

But he couldn’t let it show or Lottie would be the one to pay.

“I have no weaknesses, father. And I never will.”

Thirteen years ago . . .

He died during a thunderstorm.

Fitting, really.

Her father had created chaos and fear wherever he went. So, of course he would die during a thunderstorm in the middle of the night.

As the doorbell rang that evening, Jilly tiptoed down the stairs. She knew Mama would want her to hide while she answered the door. Nothing good ever came from someone ringing your doorbell at one in the morning.

Although this was New Orleans. Sometimes, it could be someone just wanting a cup of sugar.

Not in this weather, though.

Peering out of the shadows, she saw him.

He stood straight and tall. He looked older than twenty-seven. Or maybe that was due to how he carried himself. Confident. Dominant.

Every time she’d seen him, it was like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. Jilly couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen him smile.

If ever.

“Mr. Malone.” Mama didn’t sound surprised. But then, she’d been married to Jilly’s father for over twenty years, a man with no morals or conscience, so it was probably hard for her to be surprised by anything anymore.

Who was the right-hand man to Laurent Malone.

The most feared man in New Orleans.

And this man’s father.

“Regent,” he said in a surprisingly gentle tone.

“Please, come in.”

He stepped inside, water dripping off his jacket, though he didn’t seem to notice. He wasn’t even shivering. Should she go and get him a towel? Surely she didn’t have to hide anymore now that they knew who was at the door.

But she didn’t move. Because she didn’t want to risk either of them sending her away.

Jilly was almost seventeen; she wasn’t a child anymore.

“He’s gone, then?” Mama asked in a strange voice. She sounded almost detached.

Who was she talking about?

“They both are,” Regent replied.

Hmm, he sounded almost like Mama. Who was gone? Where had they gone?

Mama slumped against the wall and Jilly jumped to her feet, ready to race down there and help her. But Regent leaped forward and grabbed her mother, swinging the older woman into his arms and carrying her into the living room.

Jilly tiptoed down the stairs, shivering slightly. It was cold tonight. Peeking in, she saw that Regent had laid her mother down on the sofa and was pouring her a drink.
He’d never met a woman he couldn’t charm . . . until her . . .

He might be the youngest brother in a powerful crime family, but Maxim Malone had never taken life too seriously. Gorgeous, sexy, and charming, he was used to getting whatever he wanted.
Until her.

Aston Symonds.
Sweet. Serious. Smart. She needed him to lighten her up. To make her laugh. To show her that life could be fun.
Turns out Aston needed more than that from him.

She needed his protection.
Because Aston had secrets that could destroy her.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

Aston pushed herself until her lungs burned.

More! More!

Until the need for air consumed her.

Just a bit longer. You can do it!

Popping her head out of the water, she gasped for air. She rolled onto her back, trying to calm her breathing. She was probably pushing herself too far, but she needed her muscles to burn. She needed to tire herself out so that she might have a chance of quieting her mind and actually getting some sleep tonight.

She couldn’t remember the last time she’d gotten more than a few hours of sleep at a time. Too long ago.

When her breathing had slowed, she started swimming lengths of the pool.

Up. Down.

Until exhaustion made her sluggish and she didn’t think she could go any farther.

Finished, she grasped hold of the pool’s edge and drew herself up so her chest was out of the water and resting on the concrete.

A pair of bare feet settled in front of her face.

She stiffened.

It was ten at night and usually quiet in the pool at this time. Which was just the way she liked it.

“You know that you’re not actually supposed to swim until you nearly pass out, right?” a deep voice asked.

They were good-looking feet. Usually, feet were pretty ugly. Too bony or too hairy. Maybe they had dry heels or toe fungus or overgrown toe nails.

But these feet . . . well, they were kind of sexy.

Then the feet disappeared, and the guy sat next to her. So now she was staring at a thigh, and if she moved her head a bit, some abs.

Holy heck.

Who could sit like that and not have a bit of a fat roll? This guy was fit.

You need to move, Aston.

She shouldn’t be lying here like this, half dead on the side of the pool. It wasn’t safe. This guy could do anything to her. She was as helpless as a babe.

Fuck.

Stupid.

She’d been living in New Orleans for two months now and had let her guard down. She’d started feeling safe.

But Aston knew better than anyone that she should never be careless with her safety.

And so she pushed away from the edge, staring up at the man looking down at her.

Fuck.

How was it possible for someone to be this gorgeous? She likely looked like a wreck. Her normally pale-blonde had been dyed a dark brown. Nothing that would stand out, she wanted to blend in. She also colored her eyebrows. And she knew that the color didn’t suit her complexion. So she looked pale and wrung out.

But it didn’t matter. She wasn’t here to draw attention to herself. All she wanted was to blend in. To be unnoticed.

So why the heck was this gorgeous man coming over to talk to her?

His dark hair was longer on the top and shaved around the sides. He had a sleeve of tattoos down his right arm and over his right pec. She knew this because all he was wearing was a pair of navy blue swimming trunks.

His facial hair was short, which only added to his appeal. Which was nuts because she’d never been attracted to men with facial hair before.

Have you ever been attracted to any men before?

No. Which is what made these feelings even more disturbing.

She needed to get out of the pool.

She just had to find the energy.

“Would you like me to wait so you can get your phone?” he asked.

Huh?

“So you can take a photo.” A wicked grin lit up his face and his eyes danced.

What was so amusing? Was he . . . laughing at her?

She could feel her defensiveness rising. She hated being the butt of the joke. Her brothers had done that to her constantly.

And they’d been mean about it.

She knew her skin was too thin, that she was likely reading too much into it, but she couldn’t help the small sting of hurt.

“And why would I want a photo of you?”

“Ow. Ouch.” Instead of looking insulted, his grin widened as he held a hand to his chest. “That hurts. And here I thought you were checking me out.”

She totally had been, but she’d never admit it.

“I just zoned out and you happened to be in my line of sight.”

His eyes narrowed as he grew serious. She tensed. Aston was starting to get cold, but she didn’t want to leave the pool with him sitting there.

She didn’t need to give him more ammo to laugh at her.

Not all men are like your brothers and their friends.

She knew that. Deep down.

But she was utterly drained and her defenses were down.

This was why she never swum to the point of exhaustion when there were other people around. She couldn’t keep her guard up in this state.

“This isn’t a good time for you to swim,” he told her.

What?

Who was he to tell her when she could swim?

“This facility is open twenty-four-hours, and I’ve paid my dues just like you. I can swim here whenever I like.”

She was the princess locked in the tower. Cosseted. Loved. Protected.

And fading a little every day . . .

After being kidnapped and beaten, Lottie Malone retreated from life into the safety of her brothers' protection, intending to stay there forever.

What she didn't know was that there were two unlikely heroes waiting to free her.

Liam Carmichael has the face of an angel and a soul that he believes is dark. Emotionally stunted and domineering, he lets few people close and that's the way he likes it.

But the moment he laid eyes on Lottie, she was his.

His. And his husband's.

With bad boy good looks and a huge heart, Nico knows that Lottie needs them in order to thrive.

They want to share her, possess her, claim her.

They just have to work out how to do that without breaking her.

Please note: This is a mmf romance. The heroine has issues with anxiety and self-harm due to past trauma so please read with caution.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

Liam Carmichael was sex on two legs.

And kind of a jerk.

But it didn’t stop Lottie from admiring how gorgeous he was. White-blond hair. High cheekbones. Firm jaw. And though he wasn’t looking her way, she knew his eyes were icy blue.

Face of an angel — soul of the devil.

Dressed in a suit that fitted him to perfection, as usual. She doubted he even owned casual wear; he probably slept in his suits. They had to be made especially for his tank-like body. He turned from talking to Regent to look at the man next to him. His husband Nicolas.

Not a jerk.

Nico was just as gorgeous, but in a different way. He had that whole bad-boy look down pat. His hair was longer, messy in a way that didn’t look contrived. Slimmer and shorter than Liam, but still muscular. Tanned skin. Tattoos down his arms, up his neck. He wore dark jeans and a tight, faded T-shirt that showed off his thick biceps.

Regent walked off down the hallway, leaving the two men alone in the foyer. She was sitting on the steps, dressed in a long nightgown and robe.

She couldn’t sleep, so she’d come down to see if Regent was still awake. He didn’t sleep much either. Often, she’d curl up on the sofa in his office and read a book while he worked. Sometimes she’d have to put on noise-canceling headphones when he was making sensitive calls.

She assumed sensitive meant he was talking about things that were less than legal, and she wasn’t privy to that information. She wasn’t privy to much when it came to any of her brothers’ lives.

Had to protect the princess.

She stifled a sigh. That wasn’t fair. It wasn’t like she did anything to disprove their belief that they had to protect her. In fact, with the way she acted, it was no wonder they were all overprotective.

The princess who couldn’t leave her tower because she was too fucking scared.

She was so sick of it.

All you are is a burden.

Shut up. Shut. Up.

She clenched her hands into fists, resisting the urge to bang them against her thighs.

Today had been a particularly bad day. She didn’t know why. Some days were just worse than others. Some days, the anxiety had a firmer grip on her, digging its claws in deep and whispering things to her she knew weren’t true.

Didn’t mean she didn’t sometimes believe them.

It was a school holiday, and Thea had dropped her brothers off earlier this morning while she went to work. Thea worked for Lottie’s brother Jardin whom she was also in a relationship with. Along with Jardin’s best friend, Carrick.

Lottie wondered what it would be like to be with two men. Her cousins, Beau and Maddox, shared their woman too. Poor Scarlett. Lottie figured one Malone man was enough. And they were Texan Malones, which made them almost completely wild.

She missed her cousins. They were fun and insane. Free.

While she was a prisoner of her own mind. Her anxiety.

Stop it.

Enough with the negative thoughts. If she kept going, she’d do something she’d regret. Thea’s little brothers, Keir, who’d just turned ten and Ace, who was seven, had distracted her for most of the day. They’d worn her out too. Which is what she’d been hoping for.

She wished she could sleep without nightmares plaguing her. Tonight’s nightmare had been a weird one. Liam had been there, telling her that she was safe. That nothing would happen to her because he would protect her.

She didn’t know why she sometimes dreamed that Liam had been there.

So here she was, sitting on the stairs, waiting for her oldest brother’s visitors to leave so she could creep down into his office and have him keep the nightmares at bay for a while.

But instead of leaving, Liam and Nico hung around in the foyer. Obviously waiting on Regent for something. She wished he’d hurry up.

Then Liam turned and looked straight up at her. Those icy blue eyes pierced her. Froze her on the spot.

Oh shit.

He knew she was there? Had he known from when she first sat down, or had he just seen her?

He arched an eyebrow as he ran his gaze over her. “Shouldn’t you be in bed, little girl?”

Rude.

She was twenty-seven, not a little girl, she didn’t have a bedtime.

Nico turned to look up at her. His smile grew wide. “Lottie-bo-bottie.”

She rolled her eyes at his foolishness, but a smile twitched at the corners of her mouth. Nico always made her feel better.

“Lottie-bo-bottie? Really?” Liam drawled.

She didn’t get what Nico saw in him. Well, all right, she kind of did. He was insanely handsome.

But were his good looks worth putting up with his giant ego and dickish personality?

Maybe he had other redeeming qualities. What they were, she had no idea. Regent had known Liam for years, but they seemed to grow closer after her kidnapping.
Brutal. Savage. Vengeful.

Victor Malone is his oldest brother’s right-hand man, the watchful protector. Swift with his revenge if you cross him or his family.

Most people run from him . . .

But not her.

Gracen has no idea that the man who comes into her bakery each morning for his sweet bun fix is one of the most feared men in New Orleans. And when she finds herself in trouble, there’s only one person she can turn to for help.

But what happens once she finds out the full truth of who he is?

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

Crunch!

Victor smashed his fist into his opponent’s face. The roar of the crowd barely registered. He wasn’t here for them. The other guy stumbled back, his hand on his face as blood poured from his broken nose.

Come back at me.

Give me a decent fight.

It would be easy to end the fight now. A few punches to his ribs. A kick to the back of the knee. A choke hold when he fell.

But Victor wasn’t ready for the fight to be over. He could still feel that burning, sizzling need inside him. And he had to do something to release it.

So, he waited for the asshole to shake off the pain of his broken nose, wipe the blood away, and move back to him.

Smack! Smack!

He pummeled the guy, punching his torso then darting back.

Come on, asshole.

The guy groaned, swaying while the crowd’s roar increased. They could scent his desire for blood. To make this asshole suffer.

In these underground fights, there was only one rule. Do not kill your opponent. Because no one wanted the hassle of taking care of the body.

Come at me!

But the dickhead just crumpled to the floor in a heap.

The crowd was on their feet as Victor gave the bastard a final kick in the stomach. Yeah, it could be seen as unsportsmanlike. But then, this wasn’t a sport down here.

It was dirty, nasty, bloody survival.

Just the way he liked it.

Besides, he had his reasons for hating this asshole. His friends rushed forward to drag him away as Victor glanced around.

Did he have time for another fight?

He hit the cold gaze of his oldest brother. Regent shook his head, knowing what he was thinking.

Fuck. He clenched his hands into fists but didn’t let anything show on his face.

It wasn’t enough—not nearly.

He nodded as George, the guy Regent hired to manage the fights, approached, talking about how he wanted Victor to fight this new up-and-coming fighter next week.

He’d heard it all before. This was getting . . . mundane. Boring.

It wasn’t enough anymore. The fights were barely touching his need to do something . . . anything to help relieve the demons inside him.

Walking to where Regent stood in their private, secure area, he picked up the T-shirt he’d dropped and slipped it over his huge frame. He’d always been big, even as a kid he’d towered over all the other kids. He’d seen the way other parents had eyed him warily, as though worried he’d attack their children.

If they could only see him now.

But his size was his one advantage over other people. He wasn’t a leader like Regent with a cunning mind, wasn’t driven and smart like Jardin, or charismatic like Maxim.

Victor was strong, muscular, and he could fight. That’s all he had to contribute.

Regent met him part way. His bodyguard, Jose, stood behind him. Victor wanted him to start traveling with more bodyguards, but Regent didn’t trust many people. He had a couple of guards at the house and his lieutenants. That was it.

And he got it. After Alice, they were all on edge and less trusting.

“Let’s go,” Regent said, eyeing him as they walked out the back door. Their car was waiting for them at the curb.

Jose held the door for both of them. Regent slid into the car with a nod, making it all seem so easy.

Victor always felt awkward when Jose or one of the other guards did this. He’d have been happier being the bodyguard.

That’s what he’d been born to do. To guard his brother. To take a bullet for him if necessary. That’s what his father had always impressed on him.

How disposable he was. How it was his responsibility to keep Regent alive.

Victor knew Regent didn’t see it that way. But it was what it was.

He should have fucking realized what Alice was up to. They’d let her into their house, close to their precious sister, and none of them had realized she was the rat.

He should have guarded Regent better.

Instead, Regent had been poisoned. He’d nearly died.

After he’d climbed in, Regent handed him an ice pack and some antiseptic for the scrapes on his knuckles. The privacy screen was already up, separating the back and front seats.

“I’m fine,” he grumbled as Jose shut the door.

“You don’t know where that asshole has been. Clean the cuts or I will.”

Victor shot his brother a look. He sounded stressed. That wasn’t normal for Regent, but there had been a lot of shit going down lately.

Since they’d discovered Alice had been working for Patrick McMahon, Regent had grown even colder. Removed. Detached.

It probably didn’t help that Lottie had moved away with her two men. Lottie had always given Regent someone to fuss over. To take care of.

His oldest brother needed someone to protect and look after to keep himself from becoming an emotionless robot. To keep him human.
