The final term at Nocturne Academy has begun… and something dark is stirring beneath the surface...
Avery
Being gay in the magical world means hiding who you are—or paying the price. I’ve learned to keep my head down, stay close to my coven, and survive the football team's cruelty one insult at a time. But nothing prepared me for Saint, my new roommate. There’s a haunted look in his golden eyes... and a monster under his skin.
A Cursed Drake lives inside him—possessive, obsessed, and terrifyingly fixated on me. He whispers of “cuddles,” but there’s violence in his desire. I should be running. Instead, I’m drawn to both the boy and the beast.

Saint
My whole life, I’ve been taught to fear what I am. To hide it. To fight it. But the curse burning inside me grows stronger every day. And when Avery came into my life—brilliant, brave, and already carrying wounds of his own—the fire inside me turned to obsession.
He soothes my madness. Calms the chaos.
But the Drake is hungry… and it wants him.
If I give in, I’ll lose myself. If I resist, I might lose him.

At Nocturne Academy, love is forbidden, dragons are cursed, and being different can get you killed.
But some things are worth the danger

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

1

AVERY

It’s not easy being a gay teen in the magical world. The human world has moved on a lot in terms of same-sex relationships and become somewhat more progressive. But the magical world is still stuck in the Middle Ages. In most of the Realms, being same-sex oriented is viewed with varying degrees of horror to homophobia.

Take my own family, for instance. My magic manifested early and so did my sexual orientation. My father was not pleased about either one. He’s a big shot, super powerful Warlock, working on serious issues like Climate Change and no doubt he was hoping his only son would follow in his footsteps. Unfortunately, the very first time my magic manifested, he knew right away that wasn’t to be.

I was an early flamer—in every sense of the word. But in the magical world, the world of witchcraft, specifically, when we talk about someone “flaming up” we mean the first time the magic in their blood comes to the surface and manifests in the outside world.

Most boys with witch powers—Warlocks—flame up in very manly ways. I had a childhood friend, Brandon,—(well, I was mostly friends with his sister, but we were around the same age)—who wanted really badly to do well on his Little League team. He was working on his batting and catching and whatever else it is you do in baseball every day, but he just couldn’t seem to hit the ball very far.

Well, when Brandon’s magic manifested, it came out at a big game. He hit the ball so hard he knocked the cover off of it and it flew some ungodly distance—right out of the Little League park they were playing in—and crashed through some woman’s bay window about a mile away.

Of course, there was a lot of work to do, convincing the Norms—which is what the magical community calls regular humans with no magic—that it had all been some trick of the wind—a freak accident that could never happen again. But his family and the rest of the magical community in our little town of Frostproof, Florida, knew what had really happened and his father could not have been prouder. Seriously, I remember hearing him brag to my own Dad constantly about his little super slugger and seeing the envy in my father’s eyes as he nodded and congratulated his friend.

Another boy around my age, Andrew, started a truck with his magic when it manifested, because he wanted to drive “like the race cars on NASCAR.” Another one I know tamed a poisonous snake—a water moccasin—and made it his familiar when his magic came out. And the list just goes on and on. Guys with witch blood tend to have dramatic and very masculine magical manifestations.

But not me.

No, the very first time my magic manifested, was when my mother sewed herself a dress that I, in my six-year-old wisdom, considered too plain. (Yes, I was fashion-forward at an early age.)

Anyway, my mother is a Null. That’s what the magical community calls someone who comes from a magical family but has no magic themselves. My mom’s Null status means she has to do things the hard way but she hasn’t let that stop her. She’s the most determined and positive person I know and she’s also my biggest cheerleader—I love her so much.

So mom had sewed herself a little black dress for an upcoming cocktail party but when I saw it hanging there on her dress mannequin, I remember thinking that it needed some decoration. Just something to brighten it up a bit. In fact, I could almost see what it needed in my head—the colorful pattern that would take it from blah to beautiful.

And as I stood there, seeing these shapes and colors in my head—(my magic has always had a very visual component)—my fingertips began to tingle. And before I knew it, the pattern I had been imagining was happening—colorful threads were appearing from nowhere and decorating my mother’s little black dress with a gorgeous profusion of flowers and geometric shapes and even a huge, red dragon—which my “magic needle” as I call it—sewed onto the front of the bodice.

It was just that easy—I willed the pattern to be there and it was. Lots of witchcraft involves spells and incantation that take a long time to set up and gather all of the ingredients for. But my magic needle has always just been there for me, with almost no effort on my part. It’s like breathing and I still love it for its simplicity and the way it comes so naturally.

Anyway, I came from a magical family, so I wasn’t amazed or horrified by this strange thing I had suddenly done—I knew it was just my magic finally coming out. But I was absolutely delighted that I could now “fix” problem clothes without having to try and use my mom’s clunky sewing machine—(which she was trying to teach me at my own request.)
What happens when you've been under an uglification spell your entire life and it suddenly gets lifted?
Well, read my book if you want to find out--it's what you might call a cautionary tale...
I used to be plain, boring, forgettable Emma Plunkett...but that was back when I thought I was human. Now, I'm something completely different. I have raven hair, purple eyes, and the power to Fascinate--not to mention two gorgeous Fae warriors who have both sworn their undying love and loyalty to me. (How can I choose between them when I want them both?)
I've heard the other students at Nocturne Academy whispering behind my back. Either I'm a lost Fairy Princess...or a creature so dark and evil I could change the fate of the Fae Realm forever--only I don't know which!
But I have a bad feeling I'm about to find out...

I don’t just mean he was ugly, although if I was being honest, he really was. He had lank brownish hair, small no-color eyes, and really just terrible skin. Like pizza-face bad is what I mean. He was also shorter than me, thin verging on scrawny, and one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet.

Ha—surprised you there, didn’t I? You thought I was just going to go on and on about how awful he looked but I really don’t need to—the popular kids at Nocturne Academy did that plenty. He didn't need me piling it on too.

He really was a nice guy, though and there was something about him, something I couldn't quite put my finger on…

But I didn't know that on the first day of our new unit in AP Biology. I just stood there at the front of the room, trying not to let my face sag into an expression of disappointment when Mr. Barron called out,

“Emma Plunkett, you’ll be lab partners with Bran O’Connor. Go find your seat.”

Reluctantly, I went to sit beside my new partner. This was my fault—if I hadn’t been late on the first day of this new unit, I might have gotten paired with someone else— someone like Elian Darkwing.

Yeah, I know his name sounds like something straight out of a vampire romance novel but that's because he is a vampire—or Nocturne, as they call themselves. He's tall and gorgeous and completely unobtainable but hey, a girl can dream right? After all, one of my best friends, Megan, is Blood-Bonded to a Nocturne so maybe it could happen for me too.

Well, not this time, apparently because now I was stuck with Bran O'Connor which was going to be a problem.

I don’t mean it was a problem because he was hard to look at. No, the problem was going to be the extra attention having the ugliest guy in school as my lab partner was going to draw from the beautiful people at Nocturne Academy.

Wow, that sounds incredibly shallow.

I promise I’m not the prom queen type that can’t be bothered with less than perfect people. I’m a lot less than perfect myself.

How do I look, you’re probably wondering? Well, look up the word “nondescript” in the dictionary and you’d see a picture of me. And then you’d promptly forget what I looked like because I am that forgettable. Seriously—dishwater brownish-blonde hair, muddy, no-color hazel-ish eyes, no figure to speak of—that’s me. Plain Jane and completely boring.

Everyone else at Nocturne Academy has something special about them. They’re cool, mysterious vampires, or witches with amazing magical powers. Or they can turn into freaking dragons and fly and breathe fire—which recently happened to another good friend of mine, Kaitlyn. Or they’re pretty, sparkly fairies from the Realm of the Fae just slumming it here in the human world until it’s time to make their debut at the Seelie Court.

But me? I’m nothing. I’m meh. I’m so bland I make dry toast look exciting.

Which is why I’m usually able to fly under the radar of the pretty people—in this case, Morganna Starchild.

Morganna was a Fae with perfectly coiffed honey-blonde hair and huge blue eyes that sparkled like sapphires in her exquisitely sculpted face. Like all Faes, she looked a little like an Anime character come to life with eyes and boobs that were gorgeous and just a little too big and cheekbones that would make any plastic surgeon retire on the spot. She was just basically perfection.

And lately she’d really had it out for me.

I don’t know why Morganna started picking on me. Maybe because I’m not as pretty as her. But then again, to the Fae, all humans look like toads. I mean, we’re just so much less perfect than they are, we might as well be one step down on the evolutionary ladder.

For whatever reason, Morganna had made it her personal mission to make my life miserable lately. And having Bran as a lab partner wasn’t going to help her decide to ignore me and get back to her regular life of being flawless and pretty.

Speaking of Morganna, she was currently sitting beside my crush, Elian Darkwing and smirking at me as I settled in my chair beside Bran. She was flirting shamelessly with Elian, which was supposed to be against the rules. For time out of mind The Edict—this really strong magic spell—kept the different kinds of Others from dating or having romantic relationships outside their own species. But since my friend Megan and her Nocturne boyfriend Griffin broke the spell, it seemed like all bets were off.

I tried not to notice the way she was whispering to Elian as she watched me, but I couldn’t help hearing what she was saying.

“Looks like poor little Emma finally found a boyfriend. And he’s almost as pretty as she is!” she said, in a voice low enough that Mr. Barron couldn’t hear it but loud enough that the pretty people in the room—mostly other Faes with a few Nocturnes thrown in—who were grouped around her like a court around a queen, could.
My home...my family...even my beauty. The right side of my face is normal--even pretty. But the left side, I hide in shame. That's where The Fire marked me...scarred me forever.
At Nocturne Academy I'm nothing--just a little Norm girl with no supernatural powers and a disfigured face. Which is why it's so strange that a big, Handsome Drake like Ari Reyes should take an interest in me.
But it isn't only Ari who's interested in me. For under his high cheekbones and clear amber eyes, he hides another, much more frightening visage--A Drake, the fire-breathing monster that lives within him.
A monster who has decided I should be his alone. Can I survive Ari's love for me? And more importantly, can I survive the love of his Drake?
Because once a girl has been claimed by a Drake, the only way out is through The Fire.
I can feel the heat baking off them and their bright fingers reach for me hungrily—wrapping around me, enfolding me in the terrible searing pain I can never escape…never forget.

Outside the door, I hear my mother and father screaming.

The door bursts open at last and they are there, but the flames already have me—I can feel them licking up the back of my nightgown like hungry tongues, setting my hair afire with light. They are ravenous—insatiable. They intended to eat me alive—I know that just as I know there is no escape from them.

“Katy!” my mother screams as she runs to me, heedless of the wall of fire between us. “Katy—my baby!”

She dives through the flames, not caring that they catch her too, wrapping around her like the wings of a great and terrible bird enfolding her. She pulls me close and begins to beat at the fire that is trying to eat me, all while my father is shouting for us to hurry, yelling that we have to run…have to get out…

Get out, I think. We have to get out!

We will never get out.

And then I smell the awful scent of burning flesh and know it is my own…

I woke up with tears in my eyes and my throat closed tight with panic, as I always did when I dreamed of The Fire.

I thought of it that way—capitalized in my head. Why not? It was certainly important enough—it had taken everything from me. It was probably what my English teacher would call “the seminal event” of my entire life and though it had happened over two years ago, when I was barely fourteen, the dream made it seem as fresh as ever. I could still hear my parents screams, echoing above the roaring flames…

A sob caught in my throat and then another as a vast sense of loss filled me. They were gone—they had left me all alone and they were never coming back. My wonderful, wise mother and my handsome, smartass father, who was always cracking dad jokes to make us groan. I would never see them again—not on this side of eternity, anyway.

I know lots of teenagers don’t get along with their parents—and my relationship with mine hadn’t been perfect. But we had laughed together and loved each other and really, almost never disagreed.

I wondered if it would hurt less if we had fought more.

The vast ocean of grief—its waters as deep and black and cold as space—threatened to overwhelm me. I felt like I would drown in it sometimes.

Sometimes I even wanted to.

The loss of my parents filled me for a moment and my heart ached almost as much as my scars, which covered my arms and the entire left side of my body. Sometimes I tried to remember what I had looked like without them—back when all of my face—not just the right side—was pretty and pleasing to look at. Now the left side looked melted and what used to be smooth, light brown skin had been replaced by pinkish-white scar tissue, knotted and lumped and ugly…so ugly.

I avoided mirrors these days and, except for when I was alone with my Coven-mates at Nocturne Academy, I kept to myself as much as possible.

I wished I was there now—wished I could reach out to Emma or Megan, the newest member of our little clan—for some comfort or at least some distraction from my bleak thoughts and the awful memories.

But it was the weekend and I was home. Well, at Mr. and Mrs. Breedlove’s home, anyway.

I had been babysitting their little girl, Allegra, almost from the time she was born. After The Fire and the weeks I spent in the hospital, I had no home of my own to go back to so Alastair and Anastasia Breedlove had taken me into their house and given me a room of my own—right next to Allegra’s. They had even sponsored me for Nocturne Academy—paying the extremely expensive tuition out of their own pocket.

I was grateful for their kindness though, being Nocturnes, neither one of them was exactly very warm. But Allegra made up for her parents’ coolness and distance by being sweet and bubbly and incredibly lovable. I knew what my friend Avery said—that I was basically the Breedloves’ nanny, at least on the weekends—but I didn’t care. Allegra was a ray of sunshine in my dark life and I loved her as though she was my own.

As though my thoughts of her had called the little girl, I heard the light patter of footsteps in the hall outside my room and then the door creaked open. In the darkness of the hallway, I saw the soft glow of her pale blue eyes.

“Katy?” she whispered, approaching my bed. “Katy, I had a nightmare. Can I sleep with you?”
What do a mysterious necklace, forbidden Blood Magic rituals, and a sarcastic Nocturne boy with the face of a fallen angel all have in common? Me, apparently.
Since I started school at Nocturne Academy, strange happenings have befallen me. The weird key-shaped necklace I found at a flea market chokes me every time I try to take it off. Also, a tall, beautiful, and bitingly sarcastic Nocturne has the lock that matches it.
His name is Griffin Darkheart, and—like this freaking necklace—I can't seem to stay away from him, though he's being Censured for mysterious crimes. Among a student body composed of vampires, witches, were-dragons, and fairies, I no longer know what my future holds.
To heck with graduating with honors. I'm just hoping to graduate alive. Nocturne Academy is full of deadly dangers.
And I've already got a target on my back.

Books in Series:

Nocturne Academy Series by Evangeline Anderson

Books by Author:

Evangeline Anderson

1

“Blood stones.”

“Excuse me?” I looked up from the heap of jewelry, laid out the rickety folding table. It sparkled like plastic diamonds under the hot Tampa sun.

“Blood stones,” the old woman who stood behind the table said again. She nodded at the necklace I’d been examining. It stood out in the glittering, tawdry jumble, maybe because it didn’t glitter—at least, the necklace itself didn’t. The fine-linked chain was made of some matte black metal I had never seen before. Hanging from it was an unusual pendant—a single key made from the same black metal and studded with four tiny crimson stones. The key was about an inch long and felt unusually heavy in my hand.

“You mean these?” I pointed to the stones set in the head of the key. “I thought they were garnets.” There’s no way they could be rubies. Nothing that valuable would turn up at a flea market on the bad side of town. At least, I assumed this was the bad side of town. I’d only been in Tampa a few hours but so far I wasn’t impressed.

“They’re rare.” The old woman nodded solemnly, as though imparting a piece of secret wisdom. “A piece like this…it’s not for just anyone.”

“Riiiight,” I said skeptically. I could tell what the old woman was trying to do—she wanted to make the necklace seem special, unique. Doubtless so she could charge more for it.

I was tempted to put it down and walk away. The flea market was crowded and loud and the heat from the Florida sun was oppressive—like wearing a fur coat I couldn’t take off. The long-sleeved Henley shirt I had on wasn’t helping but changing clothes wasn’t an option. All these minor aggravations added up and I was in no mood to be hustled, especially by a saleswoman who looked like one of the three weird sisters from Macbeth.

But somehow I couldn’t let the necklace go.

“Try it on,” the old woman urged, leaning forward. “You’ll know if it’s right when you try it.” She had straggly gray hair and a hooked nose with a wart on one side. Seriously, all she needed was a broomstick and a black cat to complete the image.

“I don’t know…” I said. But already my hands were slipping the black chain over my head, moving independently of my reluctant thoughts.

The necklace settled naturally around my neck and the key slipped into the open collar of my shirt and came to rest just above my breasts, almost as though it was coming home. Despite the fact that it had been lying out in the bright, hot sunlight, the metal felt strangely cool against my skin—almost cold in fact.

“Looks good.” The old woman nodded approvingly. “The blood stones are almost the color of your hair.”

“Not really. It just looks that way because of the light.” I put a hand to my long, wavy hair self-consciously. It’s auburn-brown but it looks wine-red in the sun—not that I got out to admire the effect very often. With my pale complexion, I exploded into freckles if I spent too much time in direct sunlight so I pretty much avoided it like the plague. It had never been too much of a problem in Seattle, where I grew up. But after just a few hours in the intense Florida heat, I was beginning to think it was time to invest in some serious sun block.

“It looks good on you,” the old woman insisted, nodding at the necklace. “You should buy it.”

“That’s really nice of you to say but I don’t have much money on me.” I tried to sound regretful but honestly, I just wanted to get away. The old woman was giving me the creeps and the sun seemed to have gotten even hotter in the last few minutes. It pounded against my skull like a golden hammer, making me feel vaguely nauseous.

I hate being hot.

“I need to go find my aunt,” I gave as an excuse, as I pulled the necklace over my head to return it. Or tried to anyway.

Because the necklace wouldn’t come off.

I tried again. Hadn’t it slipped over my head with the greatest of ease just a moment before? The chain had been long enough that the key pendant settled almost between my breasts. But now it didn’t seem long enough to come off and the key was higher—nestled in the hollow of my throat.

“It likes you.” The old witch eyed me with bird-like interest as I fumbled with the necklace. “A lot, it seems.”

“That’s ridiculous.” I slid the fine-linked chain through my fingers, feeling for a clasp of some kind. There wasn’t one. “It’s just a necklace.”

“With blood stones in it. Very rare. Very precious.” She leaned forward, eyeing my neck in a disturbing way. “And it’s not the necklace—it’s the key, dearie. It’s the key.”
