Once upon a time, there was a stunningly gorgeous mage named Nikki.
They were trapped by evil, horrible Jaeggi mages for ten long years until they were rescued by the brave dragon named Gunter.
The grumpy red knight swept in, carrying them off to a fair castle, where they lived happily ever after.
That’s how the story’s supposed to go, anyway. Nikki would really like to have that fairytale ending, please and thank you.
It’s too bad Gunter is oblivious and the Jaeggi are interfering. Nikki may just have to cook up some explosions to help both situations along, because they’re determined to get their happily ever after.
Concrete exploded under the heat, and buried timbers burst into flames. Jaeggi mages screamed and ran, scattering like little insects to new hiding places.

There would be no more hiding. The dragons and mages of Burkhard, Valerii, and the Sodalicium had descended on the Jaeggi to deliver justice at last. After five hundred years, the last of the Jaeggi would be destroyed.

But the first priority was finding their lost dragon.

Where the hell was Ravi?

Sora was determined to magically rip the Jaeggi apart until Ravi was found, and Gunter thoroughly approved. Ravi might be a troublemaker and a danger to his library, but he was still a brother—he was family—Gunter had known most of his life.

If something had happened to Ravi...

If they were too late...

Gunter shoved the thought aside as his stomach twisted with more fear and pain. They weren’t too late. They’d get Ravi back.

Flapping his wings, Gunter headed higher to turn and make another pass over the compound. Maybe there was a hidden location. That could be where they’d imprisoned Ravi.

His dragon was trying to suggest that maybe more fire could be used to burn away the hidden bits, but Gunter ignored the suggestion. His dragon believed fire was the answer to everything.

As he completed his turn, a familiar blue streak caught his eye. Gunter blinked a couple of times at the sight of Ravi darting up alongside him.

“Hey, Gunter!” Ravi called out in his usual happy-go-lucky tone, as if he hadn’t been kidnapped by the Jaeggi and scared his entire clan to death.

“Ravi! Where have you been?” The demand might have been softened by Gunter tilting his wings and stretching out his neck so he could bump his snout against the side of Ravi’s head. He’d never been so relieved to see the bundle of mischief in his life. For the first time in...well, ever, he felt like hugging his friend tightly.

Ravi laughed and returned the gesture. “Sorry I missed all the fun. I need to see Alric and Sora. I also need you to protect them,” he finished, shoving a small, slender blond human at him. Gunter hadn’t even noticed Ravi carrying a rider. His focus had been on the dragon.

An utterly undignified sound escaped Gunter, but he couldn’t not accept the poor creature. And wasn’t it just like Ravi to hand a human off mid-flight and not think of the dangers? Ravi’s passenger looked as panicked by this maneuver as he was, but Gunter got a firm grip and didn’t let go. He automatically tucked the human—no, mage—close. Now that Gunter was holding the mage, he could clearly smell the magic wafting off his body. Ravi had found a mage who didn’t belong to the Jaeggi Clan. This was a doubly good day then. New mage and a safe Ravi. If they could destroy the Jaeggi once and for all, it would be the best day ever.

But first, what the devil was he supposed to do with the mage?

“Ravi?”

“Nikki is a mage. Saved my life!”

Gunter softly grunted and nodded. That was enough for him. He tightened his fingers, careful of his talons so he didn’t harm his passenger. If he’d come out of that mad, chaotic battle from below, then Gunter wanted to make sure Nikki was alright. He turned in his flight, heading to the back of the line where he could safely set down, get someone to check the mage over.

Very carefully, he landed outside the battlefield where a small group of mages had set up a triage and healing center for anyone injured. Gunter attempted to settle Nikki on his feet, but the mage would not be released. It was like being wrapped up by an octopus. Every time Gunter got one limb unhooked, another would latch on.

“Wait, wait! Don’t put me down,” Nikki demanded in a harsh whisper. He looked over his shoulder at the other mages and then tightened his hold on Gunter. “Who are all these people?”

“These mages are from my clan. They won’t hurt you. They only wish to help. They can check you over to make sure you don’t need medical attention,” Gunter explained, but it made zero difference on Nikki’s grip.

“Please don’t put me down,” Nikki pleaded. Panic grew in his voice. “I really, really don’t want to be on the ground. I’m much safer in the air. Can we please go back up in the air?”
Sora finds this to be doubly true after meeting the struggling Burkhard Clan and the mischievous Ravi. The wind dragon has stolen his breath, and heart, away. Sora suspects he might have found his mate.
But his inability to be truthful with Ravi eats at Sora. When the Jaeggi attack, Sora can’t keep his secrets any longer. Not when Ravi is in the center of the war raging around them.
He has to reveal who he really is. It’s the only way to be with Ravi and give the Burkhards the help they need.
Sora’s secret could tip the scales to save them all.
The May air was heavy with the smell of humans and pollution, but the wind carried teasing hints of rich earth, green leaves, and—even farther off—a sharp tang of snow on mountaintops. He longed to head higher into the sky, but he didn’t dare. The fog was thick enough that if he went too high up, he’d be in danger of crossing flight space. Too low, he would of course risk running into buildings. This was the optimum height for flight.

Normally, he wouldn’t be flying during the daylight hours when humans could see him, but Gunter was getting his panties in a twist over collecting more genealogical data on the Aldridge mage clan. The grumpy dragon had insisted he needed the information now, not tonight when it made more sense to be flying about.

In the past eleven months, the Burkhard fire dragons had acquired mages from three different clans. Not only had dragons found mates, but it had given them new avenues to search for other lost mages.

And new avenues of hope after five hundred years of having very little.

A mage was the only being who could be a true mate for a dragon. The only one who could give them baby dragons, saving them from eventual extinction.

Hence, Ravi flying around in his dragon form during the day with nothing more than a little fog to cover his bright blue scales.

Lisette, their clan’s head mage, had given him an amulet with a cloaking spell to keep him hidden, but it had run out of juice shortly after he’d reached London. This trip was supposed to be from Sonthofen to Amsterdam and back. Apparently, some of North’s ancestors from the Aldridge clan had made a pit stop in Amsterdam for a few decades before finally hopping a boat across the ocean for the U.S.

Not that Ravi blamed them. He was a fan of Amsterdam. Beautiful city and wonderful food. But the royal researcher had taken one look at the data Ravi had sent about the new mage’s family and immediately demanded Ravi travel to London.

Ravi had nearly beat his head against the old wooden table he’d been sitting at in the Amsterdam library. This was not his thing. He didn’t mind reading, but sorting through piles of old books, records, and microfiche—because so many of these old records had never been digitized—was melting his brain with boredom.

Yes, he wanted to find lost mages and bring them to his clan.

Yes, he wanted his fellow dragons to find mates.

Hell, he wanted a mate of his very own.

But why did it require so much boring research? He was more interested in the part where they flew in and told the mage that dragons were real. It didn’t hurt if they also got to kick a little Jaeggi butt, since they were threatening both mages and dragons, but that was a bonus in Ravi’s book.

Trips to find mages were still incredibly rare. So much research had to be done first. It wasn’t like they were going to stumble across a mage—like they had with Cameron—or have a mage tug on a dragon’s tail—like North had, though only magically speaking.

So, Ravi was helping Gunter with research.

Amsterdam had led to a tiny library in Chesterfield, England, and then another library in Northampton and then a much bigger library in London, where he thought he’d finally satisfied Gunter with enough data that he could come home. But as he was packing up for his stupidly early trek back to Germany, Gunter decided he should make one more quick stop in Paris.

Because, you know, why not? He was already in this part of Europe.

When he finally got home, Ravi was dragging Gunter out of his research dungeon and locking him outside the castle. Gunter would probably hiss and cringe away from the sun like a vampire. Yeah, that would torture the dragon.

Or maybe he’d sneak into Gunter’s library and reorganize all his books according to size, or maybe color.

Ravi amused himself with thoughts of torturing Gunter when he returned to Germany. He didn’t really mind assisting the effort to find and protect more mages, but he’d always imagined it would be more in the vein of what his fellow retainers and friends, Baldewin and Warin, had done. They were sent to meet mages. They fought the evil Jaeggi clan and protected their clanmates.

Compass? Check.

North rubbed his hands together, ready to go. This wasn’t the first seeking spell he’d done—far from it—but each time he attempted it, he found himself holding his breath; praying, hoping, wishing this time it would work.

North had faith the spell would take him one step closer this time. Ever since he’d arrived in Europe, the deep red dragon scale had started rattling, as if wanting to move. His attempt in London had sent the scale zinging off the map’s surface and straight into the hotel’s boring white wall. The scale may or may not have left a dent. Confirmation pending.

He was in Belgium now, in a hotel near the Brussels airport. Quite a nice place, really, but he had a feeling it wasn’t his final destination. Not by a long shot.

“Okay, Gramps, you ready?”

North glanced over at his laptop and smiled at his grandpa on the open Skype call, who was dressed in his favorite red flannel shirt—for luck, naturally. His snowy white hair looked a little disheveled from running his fingers through it. The man was as excited and nervous about this expedition as North. His grandpa gave him a thumbs up from the laptop screen. “Ready. Let ’er rip!”

North found himself praying again, his fingers trembling slightly as he set the scale on the edge of the map. This map covered more territory than his last one because North could learn from his mistakes, thank you very much. His first map had been of the United Kingdom only, because that was the direction the scale had headed in the first time. His new map showed the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Czechia, and part of Poland. He put the compass down on the map, double-checking his own orientation. North sat facing due north on the hotel bed.

It was probably insane, what he attempted. Scratch that. It was definitely insane. Trying to find dragons when everyone insisted they’d been extinct since the Dragon War more than five hundred years ago fit the definition of crazy to a T.

But something in North compelled him to at least try. To prove it to himself, one way or another. There had to be more to this world than what he saw when he looked out his window at home, more than what his parents believed in.

After all, everyone also claimed magic was dead as well, that mages were no more. And here he sat, a mage.

Well, alright, calling himself a mage might be a little bit of a stretch. He didn’t actually know all that much magic. Just what had been handed down through his family. And his own immediate family didn’t put much stock in it, despite what they’d seen him and Grandpa do.

That was all beside the point! He had magic. Dragons possibly, maybe, still existed.

And the dragon scale seeking spell on the map, that was reacting to something. Hopefully the dragon it came from. And not something gruesome, either, like a grave. Or possibly an ancestor of this dragon? Family member? Living dragon, that’s all North asked for.

Uncapping the bottle of captured wind, he set the charged moonstone to his left, the bottle to his right, and drew on the power of both as he focused on the scale. “Ziik dracon.”

The scale didn’t zoom off and try to drill through a perfectly good wall this time. It did move, though, decisively. Straight to a spot on the southern German border, almost in Austria, and started to glow with deep red-orange light. “Whoa! Gramps, I think I got a hit!”

“Lemme see,” Earl demanded.

Snagging the laptop, North tilted the screen so his grandpa could also see the map. “Looks like it’s right there on the border. Oh man, is that a mountain range?”

“Makes perfect sense for dragons to be high up in the mountains. No better place for dragons to hide.” He spoke while chortling with outright glee. “You know what that glow means, boy? The dragons are alive.”

That fact hadn’t quite connected, but when it did, North let out a whoop. True, the Dragon War hadn’t happened anywhere near Germany. It had gone down in Africa, in fact, in the now Sahara Desert. Wait, could they just assume that? Doubts creeped in. “You really don’t think the dragon attached to this scale is dead and just buried there?”

“Still a fifty-fifty chance, I suppose,” Earl answered, but he sounded doubtful. “I’ve been reading through your great-great-grandma’s diary, bless that woman. She wrote the best notes on the spells. She said the spell you’ve been using only works on the living, not the dead. I hope for your sake she’s right.”

Baldewin jumped, sloshing the cup of coffee in his hand as Cassie barreled past him, her straight, electric blue hair bouncing. Normally, the size difference between the two of them alone would have guaranteed Baldewin kept his feet while the mage went sprawling. Normally.

But Cassie had the sort of energy and impact that negated paltry things like physics. She might be a foot shorter than his six feet, but if she hit him, it would be Baldewin picking himself back up.

A dragon’s reflexes were not to be discounted, though. He flattened himself to the wall and spilled only a little bit of coffee on his shirt, all while avoiding her. She sped past him down the broad castle hallway lined with a thick burgundy carpet, her rapid footsteps muffled.

“Found what, Cassie?” he called to her back.

“A mage!” she threw over her shoulder as she continued to run in a blur of black tights and oversized blue hoodie.

Excitement surged in him, and Baldewin took a second to chug his coffee so he could safely chase after her without splashing it everywhere. It meant he didn’t catch up with her until they were almost at Alric’s office.

Cassie’s eagerness drove her straight inside without knocking, which was rather brave. Cameron and King Alric had been mated for only about a month and were still firmly in the honeymoon stage. It was even odds of them either making out—or more—or actually doing official business.

It was on the tip of his tongue to warn her, but she was halfway into the room already. Baldewin prudently gave it a second, ears open for any signs of fumbling, panicked yelps, or the like. None came, so it must be safe for once.

“I found one!” Cassie repeated with utmost satisfaction and enthusiasm.

“You’ve got to narrow that down,” Cameron informed his twin in a teasing tone Baldewin had come to know so well over the past couple of months. “Found what?”

“A mage.”

Baldewin strolled into the king of the Fire Dragon Clan’s office, gaze skipping over the rich, dark wood furniture and bookcases filled with leather-bound tomes, as familiar to him as his own chambers.

Alric and Cameron were seated at one end of the long table that occupied a good chunk of Alric’s office. The king and consort were seated with Warin, one of Alric’s retainers and a damn good fighter. Spreadsheets covered in endless rows of numbers and colorful charts were scattered before them and clutched in their hands.

Oh, right, of course. It was coming up on that time of the year, wasn’t it? Warin always reviewed the castle expenses budget with Alric before fall came.

All three people were watching Cassie, anticipation nearly thrumming in the room. Baldewin shared it whole-heartedly. Five hundred years without a single sign of any magic was four hundred and ninety-nine years too many, in his opinion. Mages meant potential mates, magic, wonder. They’d gone far too long without all three.

He had no idea what it was about this year that’d become the turning point. But more and more mages were appearing, starting with Cameron and apparently snowballing from there. Baldewin didn’t want to question the miracle, just enjoy it. He also wanted more details.

“Found where?” he asked.

“Finland. Took a combination of seeking spells, scrying, and a little Googling, but I found him in Helsinki.” The slender, Korean-American woman was bouncing on the balls of her feet, which were covered in disturbing white bunny slippers with almost dragon-like teeth. “Nestori Taavi is his name.”

Baldewin nearly chuckled when Alric’s eyes crossed a little. “Googling?” Their king was the epitome of grace and composure, but the Noh twins had definitely shaken their handsome king up on more than one occasion with the things that popped out of their mouths.

“He’s got several applications up on various websites, job hunting,” Cassie explained, as smug as a cat with canary feathers dangling out of its mouth.

That made even less sense. “Why would a mage be job hunting? Their job is to be a mage.”

Cassie rolled her big, brown eyes at him. “Dude. He probably doesn’t know dragons still live. And mages outside of a dragon clan, they’re not really all that accepted. The world doesn’t believe in magic anymore. You should have heard the reaction when I told my parents I’d be exclusively a mage from now on. You’d have thought I announced I was doing the hippie thing and smoking weed all day.”
Cameron wants to make it clear that he did not go into the festival to find a dragon mate.
Germany is supposed to be an escape. With a new mechanical engineering degree, a new job looming, and a whole life planned out that isn’t his, Germany seems like the best place to find himself.
So how does he end up discovering his lost magic heritage, running from bad guys with a secret agenda, and being adopted by the not-so-extinct Fire Dragon clan?
Cameron blames tall, dark, and sexy Alric, king of the Fire dragons. His fated mate. Because of course he is, and mates are meant to take the blame, right?
It may take a hot second, but as Cameron learns more about the scarred Alric and the life he’s landed in, Cameron realizes that perhaps this is where he’s meant to be, magic and mates and kidnapping and all.
Turns out coming to Germany wasn’t an escape but his awakening.
All of his dragons, no matter how much they might irritate him. Like now. He reminded himself of that quite firmly.

Because he was about two seconds from wringing Ravi’s neck like a chicken’s.

“—I swear,” his friend and bodyguard said earnestly over the phone. Ravi seemed to realize Alric was about two seconds from bashing him over the head and then retreating to the castle. “It was a mage. A full-blown mage. Would I lie to you?”

“If it meant getting me out of the castle and into the festival, yes, yes you would.” Alric drew on his patience. It was currently in short supply. “If you smelled a mage, then where is she?”

“Have you seen the streets right now?” Ravi protested. “I can lose my own nose in this crowd! It’s why I called everyone down to search too. I mean, I’m totally happy to see everyone in the festival, don’t get me wrong, but I wouldn’t lie to you about spotting a mage. That’s beyond mean, and I’m not mean. Impulsive maybe. Perhaps a touch impatient, but I wouldn’t be mean, right? Right. She’s totally here, I swear on the left toe of my legless teddy bear. I’m just having a little difficulty picking the scent back up, but I swear to you she was near the beer stand, y’know, the one that’s across the street from the bakery and—”

“Ravi, breathe,” Baldewin reminded patiently from beside Alric.

Baldewin was always patient and calm. It was part of the reason why Alric had asked him to be his personal bodyguard so many years ago. That and people normally took one look at Baldewin and reconsidered whatever nefarious thing they had in mind. The man was over six feet of solid muscle and had a deadpan attitude that gave him the aura of an immovable object. Walls of concrete had more give than Baldewin. It was tempered by his good-natured humor, in evidence now in his grey-green eyes and the slight quirk of his full mouth. “You’re remembering to breathe, right?”

“Fuck you, people don’t forget to breathe while talking,” Ravi shot back.

There was a snort from Dieter. “I don’t believe you, young dragon. I’ve seen you almost pass out while talking a mile a minute.”

“I was concussed!” Ravi howled, a whine in the words.

“Ravi, focus.” Alric took in a deep breath himself, trying to scent the air without being obvious about it. The world at large thought dragons were extinct, and it was a rumor the remaining dragon clans encouraged for the simple fact that it made life a little easier.

Revealing himself at the festival was something he very much wanted to avoid.

The annual Dragon Festival was in full throttle, the city streets packed with an estimated fifty thousand people, and it was literal chaos. People from all around the world had gathered here for the three-day event. For a town that normally had only twenty-thousand inhabitants, the additional influx of people strained the seams to bursting.

Alric’s normal approach to surviving the Dragon Festival each year was to hide in his castle, in the mountains, with several bottles of select wine. He drank steadily through the event until it—and his hangover—had mercifully passed. He avoided the festival with more dedication than humanity would a plague.

And yet, here he was in the middle of it, on the streets, with people packed in against him on all sides. If Ravi had said anything aside from the word ‘mage’ he wouldn’t have moved from the castle. But that single word was enough to mobilize the entire clan.

They hadn’t seen a new mage in over five hundred years. Alric had prayed, and hoped, and searched for mages for so many years he’d almost given up on it entirely. Hearing of a mage here, so close to his home, was as incredible as it was odd. Why now? Why here? Surely it couldn’t be coincidence.

Assuming Ravi was right.

For the young dragon’s sake, he’d better be. Alric really would wring his neck if he’d gotten all of their hopes up for nothing.

Also, fortunately for Ravi, none of the revelers seemed to be paying much attention to them. They were too focused on enjoying the festival to the fullest. Dragon masks—most of them colorful, gaudy, and covered in sequins or glitter—were either on people’s heads or shoved to the side to give the wearer room to eat. People flocked to different stands offering merchandise and souvenirs. Mostly dragon-themed, naturally. The statues and pictures depicting the dragons were a little off, even accounting for artistic license.
