It's December, and Declan, Parker and Laurie, a.k.a. The Shifter Stooges, aren't feeling very festive. But when a call comes from Lucius the Vampire King, they are sent on a merry adventure. They • Complete the mission• Fall in Love• Find their holiday spirit• Claim their mates• Save the day!And do it all in their own funky, weird way.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Parker

My day starts as all my days start. With violence.

“I’m gonna stuff ya and cook ya like a Christmas goose,” comes the shout from the kitchen. Whoever said an Irish brogue is soothing to the ear never met Declan.

I raise my hat and blink at the living room filled with bright Tucson light.

An explosion of white feathers precedes Laurie bursting through the door to the kitchen. The tall, lanky shifter crosses the room in two bounds, finding shelter behind the worn armchair I’ve been sleeping in every night.

“What now?” I groan.

Declan stalks out holding a frying pan filled with charred contents. “He burned the bacon. Again.”

The smell is enough to clue me in to what happened. Like the inside of a dumpster fire. I crane my head to look at Laurie, who’s doing a bad job of cowering behind my chair, seeing as he’s twice as tall as it. “Just cook it in the oven next time. Lay it out on a sheet pan and cook it at–”

“Sacrilege!” Declan shouts. “If my ma found out we were baking bacon like a bloody shortbread–”

“There’s t-t-t-urkey–” Laurie holds up a pack of turkey bacon, but Declan’s growl cuts him off. The frying pan Declan was holding hits the linoleum with a clunk, and then a big black dog sails over me to attack Laurie. There’s a scuffle behind me, complete with shouts and kicks to the back of my chair.

I'd join in, but I’m too tired. I let my head rest on the back of the worn upholstery while Laurie dashes in a circle around me with Declan the dog chasing him. Not unlike roadrunner and coyote, if roadrunner was an owl shifter shedding white feathers and coyote was an Irish wolfhound crossed with mangy mutt.

It ends when Declan the dog snatches the turkey bacon out of Laurie’s hands. He bounds back to the kitchen door, shifts into man form–still holding the plastic-wrapped turkey bacon in his teeth. Naked, he walks to the trash can and drops the package in. “I’ll nae let that abomination in me home. What do I look like, a vegetarian?”

“Eating turkey doesn’t make you a vegetarian.” I hold up my hat to block the sight of Declan’s naked body. “Now put some clothes on. You’ll give me indigestion.”

Declan grabs the frying pan and holds it over his bare dick. “Did you sleep out here?” he asks, his scowl deeper than usual. If it were anyone else, I’d read that as concern.

“Yes.” Mostly, I didn’t sleep. But it’s better than the alternative–thrashing around in the sheets, strangled by bad dreams.

“We need more bacon,” Declan says.

“We need money to buy it,” I shoot back. “And guess who bet all of ours on Caleb’s fight?”

Declan grins. “‘Twas a grand fight.”

“That was the fight to defend the shifter fight club. It wasn’t the actual fight. Caleb’s fight had to be rescheduled. And in the meantime, all our money’s tied up.” I settle my hat back on my head. The weight usually helps me think, but today it makes me want to go back to sleep.

A shadow falls over me as Laurie steps to my side, blocking out the sun. “W-w-we could get j-j-jobs.”

“We already tried that.” The stint with Declan and Laurie dressed as giant sandwiches, roaming the median and shouting at passersby to advertise a local restaurant gave me a three day migraine.

I can still feel an echo of the pain in the back of my head. Or maybe that’s the lack of sleep combined with the noise Declan’s making in the kitchen, banging pots and pans.

“M-m-may b-b-be…” Laurie tries to say and falls silent.

His stutter is getting worse. My dreams are getting worse. Declan’s mostly the same, which is to say he’s nuttier than a peanut butter factory.

“Ya know what we need?” Declan’s back, naked except for a frilly yellow apron. He holds a mixing bowl in the crook of one elbow and points a whisk dripping with yellow yolk at me. “Some Christmas cheer.”

“That’s the last thing we need. Do you even celebrate Christmas?” A lot of shifters don’t do Christian holidays on account of the early church hunting our ancestors as demons.

“Do I?” Declan does a double take that makes his apron flutter dangerously. He drops the whisk in the bowl and crosses himself. “Me ma’d kill me if she heard ya doubting her good Christian boy.”

“There’s s-s-solstice,” Laurie says helpfully. He’s found his glasses. The coke-bottle lenses make his big, round eyes even bigger.

“Or Hanukkah. Or Kwanza. Even Diwali. All holidays dedicated to joy and light. Whose idea was it to say, at this dark and depressing time of year, we should all be joyful?” Nothing’s worse than being depressed and surrounded by people faking happiness. “Just let us be depressed.”

“That’s it.” Declan tosses the bowl onto the counter, sending the contents slopping down the cabinets. “I’m getting a tree.” He turns and gives us a full moon. Laurie and I groan. I pull down the brim of my hat over my eyes.
She’s a human. Forbidden. My brother’s widow. But deep down, my wolf believes she's mine.

Before my brother died, he made me swear to stand by his human mate and their son. It's been 10 years since his death, and I've done my best. I joined the military, got my sh*& straight.

I sent money but stayed away from Julia and my nephew. Stayed out of their life. She didn't need a screw-up like me hanging around.

That was the lie I told myself. The truth was, I couldn’t resolve my attraction to her. And I can't dishonor my brother's memory by claiming his wife.

But now her pup has entered puberty. He’s become a wolf. He needs me there to guide and protect him.

Julia hasn't forgiven me for the years I stayed away, but this time I'll do right by her. I’d do anything for the two of them.

But she’s the one I want to guide. Protect. Command. She’s the one I crave and will until my last breath.

Don't miss the next installment of Renee Rose and Lee Savino's USA Today Bestselling Shifter Ops series in which Channing meets his forbidden mate. Overprotective wolf shifter guaranteed.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Channing

I prowl on four paws through the pine trees, closing in on the house. It’s a small split-level, set back from the road and surrounded by trees. The lot’s on the end of a cul-de-sac, and the backyard abuts the Coconino National Forest. Plenty of wilderness, plenty of cover to run. My wolf approves.

So did my brother when he bought it fourteen years ago and settled with his newly pregnant mate. When life was good and the future was bright.

Then he died, and everything changed.

Almost everything. The house still looks the same. She’s taken good care of it. The paint has faded, and the roof will need replacing, but otherwise, it’s frozen in time.

The scents are the same—juniper and boxelder, pine.

The wind picks up, and I catch another scent, one I’m trying not to notice. It curls into my senses, a delicious perfume that makes my fangs sharpen, and my mouth waters.

Lilac and lavender.

My Kryptonite.

My wolf wants to cross the fifty feet separating us from the house, to find the source of the perfume and bask in it.

Instead, I turn and trot on silent paws past the house, up the hill where a Ponderosa pine stretches to the sky. I still remember the day we climbed the hill. I admired the view of Mount Elden, but my brother only had eyes for his house. For his human wife and young son playing on the patio.

Promise me, my brother demanded all those years ago. He had an army training position at Camp Navajo, but he’d been sought out for active duty by someone who knew what he was. Someone who needed his kind in the field. Just for a short-term mission.

I rub against the pine bark, searching for any lingering scent of him.

And then I catch it–a rich male wolf musk. It smells like my brother, but he’s dead. Which means it must belong to Geo, his son.

My nephew’s been running through these woods.

That means he’s shifted. We weren’t sure whether he would. Mixing shifter blood with a human’s can wipe out the shifting ability in offspring, but puberty hormones must’ve kicked Geo’s wolf-shifter genes to life.

Which means I can no longer stay away. Julia won’t know how to guide her son through this.

Geo needs me.

Looking closer, I catch sight of claw marks on the tree, like Geo was tormented by his new shape. Frustrated and alone.

Fuck.

Deke expects me at the job site, and if I’m late, he’ll be pissed. More pissed than usual. I’ll have to come back in the morning, as soon as this mission is complete.

I lope down the hill and head the long way around the house. A light turns on in the upstairs bedroom, and for a moment, a woman’s silhouette appears. Everything in me longs to change plans and head back to the house. Make sure the door is locked. Make sure she’s safe.

Instead, I turn and run away from temptation.

Away from the only woman I’ve ever wanted.

The only woman I can’t have.

I zoom up to the row of abandoned warehouses at midnight. Right on time.

Deke waits in an old van painted matte black. The sort of van that workmen use… or kidnappers. We got the van after a mission that involved a hostage situation if I remember correctly.

I park my bike and rap on the van’s side door. “Hey, man, got any free candy?”

Deke rolls down the window but doesn’t answer–just frowns at me. He’s got “resting murder face” as Lana, Teddy’s new mate, likes to call it.

“You look like a serial killer,” I tell him. He glowers harder. “What? It’s a compliment.”

“Why were you late?” he growls. “You left Taos before I did.”
This grumpy bear needs a curvy complication like he needs a bullet in the head. She trespassed on my mountain. The lovely human with bright pink braids.
Beautiful and brilliant, she's a knockout who leaves sunshine and mayhem in her wake.
But our land is under threat and if she's learned our secret, she can never leave. Now she's my prisoner until I find out what she knows.
I shouldn't keep her. I swore I'd never take a mate, but I can't stop myself from wanting Lana.
And she's in danger. There are men hunting her and she needs my protection.
Even though she's driving me crazy, I can't resist tying her to my bed and claiming her, Then destroying anyone who dares threaten my mate.
Don't miss the next installment of Renee Rose and Lee Savino's USA Today Bestselling Shifter Ops series in which a grumpy werebear meets his curvy girl match. Overprotective bear-love guaranteed.

The sun warms my side of Bad Bear Mountain by the time I set out on the trail for my morning run. Something in the wind pulls me toward the summit.

Typically, I head past the town or towards the family cabin, but it’s later in the day than usual, and I don’t want to be accosted by my neighbors or any of my brothers. The town of Bad Bear has a population of only two hundred spread over the mountain, but some days, it feels like a fishbowl, and lately everyone's been beating a path to my door.

If I go this way, I can avoid seeing anyone and get some peace. That’s what I tell myself, anyway, but the decision feels less rational than instinctual. My bear’s guiding me.

Maybe there are early berries up on the peak.

I need a good hard run, and then maybe a long flight to take my mind off things. How long has it been since I’ve been in my bird? The helicopter taxi business has been slower than usual, but that’s another thing I don’t want to think about. I could contact the Black Wolf pack up in Taos to get jobs, but I keep putting it off.

Maybe my brothers are right, and I am becoming a hermit. But my bear has been riled up, more surly than usual, ever since our last mission. I took a break, even stopped doing flights up to Taos or visiting my wolf pack friends. I told myself I was giving them space, but the truth is, the sight of them happy with their mates brings up too much shit.

No matter how hard I run, I can’t outpace the past.

The day is fine with a clear blue sky, but a gust of wind tells me we’re getting a rain storm this afternoon. It’s been a wet spring, and more flowers are blooming than usual. But the flash of bright pink ahead of me on the trail isn’t a native flower blooming in the wild.

There. My bear wants me to charge forward. Instead, I stop running and slip into stealth mode, sidling up to a cluster of pines that can hide my bulk.

The pink color belongs to a floral scented human. Her dark skin is set off by bright pink. Even her water bottle is the same outrageous color. Who goes hiking dressed like that?

The wind shifts, and I catch her scent again. Flowers and honey, and something more. Most human women smell fussy with the fake scents of body lotion. But this human smells clean as rain, like creosote.

I stalk her a few paces before I realize what I’m doing. Usually, I stay away from humans, especially females. They’re trouble, and I’d ban them from the mountain if I could. Which I can’t. Our little town loves tourists, and no matter how much I protest, the mayor keeps coming up with schemes to lure more of them here.

Of course, if more of the tourists looked like this one, I wouldn’t mind. After a few minutes of stalking, I’m close enough to get a clear view of her when she stops to drink some water. With her free hand, she flips her long braids–black with neon pink tips– behind her shoulder, then props her fist on her well-rounded hip. The move makes her breasts jiggle. There's some glorious cleavage packed into that eye-wateringly offensive outfit. I don’t normally have anything against the color pink, but this shade is bright and blinding, as subtle as an ice pick to the eye.
An hour into my hike, I’ve already shed my jacket—I’m a strange combination of cold and sweaty. Weird, but it feels good.

There’s snow on the peaks towering ahead of me. It’s spring here, but snow still lingers in the long shadows of the thickly clustered pines.

This early in the morning, my breath puffs as I trek across a frozen field where a few yellow wildflowers poke their heads up over the matted grass. I’m the only tourist crazy enough to be hiking so early in the season. I haven’t seen anyone on the trail.

The mountains of northern Italy are technically the Alps, but the locals call them I Dolomiti. The hike I chose isn’t as challenging as the ones that would carry me up the tallest peak, but my thighs burn from the steady incline. It’s still better than swaying down a catwalk in five-inch heels and a weird poofy dress that left most of my back and butt uncovered. When I was a model, I’d do anything for fashion but no longer. This model has officially quit the circuit.

“I don't understand,” my mother wailed when I called to tell her. “You were doing so well. You were making such great contacts.” In mom-speak, that meant I was meeting men. Rich men who’d love to have a model on their arm. The sort of man my mom hoped would sweep me off my feet and give me a diamond ring and marriage proposal or at least a diamond watch and an extended stay in his private penthouse. Maybe even a car and a few trips to the Riviera or Seychelles.

The type of man my mother always chased after.

I didn’t tell her that it was my date with exactly that kind of man that broke me. I was at another boring after-party on the arm of a short stock broker named Paul. Perfectly nice guy, but just because I'm a model and his head barely clears my shoulder doesn't mean that he has the right to put his hand on my ass.

I’ve stomped across the meadow and up the trail that’s disappearing between the blue-gray pines before I realize I’m muttering under my breath. A bird trills on an evergreen branch above my head, and my rage disappears.

I take a moment to clear my lungs. The air is fresh and better than any expensive cologne. The water flowing from a mountain stream is pure snowmelt and probably tastes like heaven. Tiny purple flowers peek up from the cracks in the gray rocks, and the bird above my head warbles like his sex life depends on it.

I’m far from the fashion circuit in Milan. No more crowded events that overwhelm my senses. No more clashing auras or toxic energies leaving me with a headache, desperate to get away.

No more handsy businessmen who treat me like a cigar–a possession, an indulgence, a prop. No more sharing an apartment with six other half-starved young people whose daily food intake adds up to barely half a sandwich. The first thing I did after I told my agent I quit was eat a giant bowl of cheesy pasta.

Right now, my backpack is full of the best provisions: good cheese, a local red wine, and several packs of biscotti.

I may have disappointed my mother, but I feel better than I have in a year. Like a weight lifted off my chest.

It’s been almost three months since I quit and started wandering like a vagabond. I spent a little of my fashion week earnings on a pair of hiking boots and a backpack. The rest of my nest egg has gone to reserving the little mountain huts called rifugios and a nice rental near Lake Como where I stayed while waiting for the snow to melt.

The plan is to hike Alta Via 1 and beyond. Spend the summer in the mountains. And after that, who knows? I’m eighteen, and I can do anything. This spring is the start of my new life.

Fifteen minutes of climbing, and my thighs are shaking, but it’s all worth it when I round the corner and come across a magical mountain lake. The water is a brilliant teal, an ethereal color as bright and shocking as a Lilly Pullitzer jumper.

I can’t resist going to the edge and dipping my hand in, but instead of bracing cold, the water is warm as a freshly drawn bath. In the middle of the lake, steam’s rising off the surface.

Is this a hot spring? If so, my guidebook didn’t mention it.

I drop my jacket and my pack. Facing the clear pool, I feel extra grimy. I’m so tempted to strip everything off and jump in.

But I'm not alone.

There's a man in the pool. His dark head is even with a rocky outcropping, which is why I didn't see him before.
“Not yet,” I mutter into the tiny microphone transmitter embedded in my collar. I’m wearing nothing but a stretchy black bodysuit that will allow me to shift into a wolf if I need to. If all goes to plan, I won’t need to.

In the meantime, I look like a cat burglar. Which is appropriate. Tonight I’m a thief, and the target is the eighteenth century villa built into the side of the mountain.

Gabriel Dieter's Italian mansion has layers of security. The first is its location in a secluded section of Lake Como. There’s only one road in and out, and it’s heavily guarded. But the guards are human, and somehow Colonel Johnson, the shifter commander who greenlit this op, learned their nightly route. I have two minutes to give them the slip and get down to the lake water. I already bypassed the guards, so now it’s time for me to swim.

The lake laps at the rocks, a gentle lullaby greeting me. I slip into the water and grit my teeth against the chill. My wolf doesn’t really like the water. Werewolves are heavy and swimming isn’t easy. I swim in smooth strokes and keep to the shallows until the walled fortress of Dieter’s home is ahead. When I take to land again, I give myself a good shake and fling the water off me like a wolf. I’ve yet to find a more efficient way to dry off.

“Approaching the house,” I breathe into my comm. I take a running leap and twist as I clear the top of the wall. I land silently on my feet.

“Do we need the diversion?” Channing asks.

“No.” A disturbance at the border of Dieter’s land would draw guards, but result in more heat. The further I can get without alerting Dieter to a security breach, the better.

“Incoming,” Channing mutters in my ear, but I'm already turning. My wolf scented the new arrivals: thick-bodied guard dogs racing my way. Rottweilers. I let out a growl and bare my teeth, letting my wolf greet them. The dogs stop in their tracks, realizing they’ve met a bigger predator. Something about my alpha presence makes their primal senses overwhelm their training. Challenging and soothing them all at the same time. They tilt their heads to show their necks and shy away when I stride forward.

I lope across the dark lawn to the house. There are no motion sensors in this area, probably because they don't want them tripped by the dogs. Mistake. I circle the house until I’m below the shining glass addition to the villa, the one modern touch in the centuries old architecture. Gabriel Dieter’s office.

I find toeholds in the stone wall and scale the sheer face of the house until I'm on the roof. Here, I can make my way closer to the glass cupola. “Almost in,” I report. I have a glass cutter attached to my belt, but as I creep along the tiled roof, I spy an open window in one of the eighteenth-century towers. I scale the turret, climbing blind with my fingers searching painstakingly for holds. A breeze rises off the lake and chills my exposed skin. At last, I hug the stone, having climbed level with the open window. I push the ancient glass very carefully. Sure enough, it’s unlatched.

Unbelievable.

I slip through the open window and step into a hall. “I’m in.”

Trepidation trickles up my spine as I pad through the hall towards Dieter’s office. Dieter is a paranoid sonofabitch. According to our reports, he sleeps in a safe room every night. His preferred home base is a fortress in the Swiss Alps. We tried spying on him there, but somehow he found out and sicced a small army on us. Since then, he’s gone underground, hiding in a hole too deep for even Colonel Johnson’s sources to find. Until last week, when we got reports of him staying here, in his Lake Como residence. This place isn’t as secure as his mountain chalet, but it’s belonged to his family for centuries. He must have arranged to meet someone here—probably a warlord or terrorist leader or similar customer hoping to buy Dieter’s illegal arms.

I push my wolf’s unease away. The only thing bigger than Dieter’s paranoia is his conceit. He probably wanted to meet his customers here to impress them. This hallway is lined with priceless artifacts, enough to fill a small museum. I creep past giant gilt framed paintings, Greek statues, a Ming vase. This guy hoards treasure like a dragon. Who knows what other valuables are locked in the vaults below this house?
Manby Hot Springs—the three rock pools near the ruins of an old stagecoach bathhouse—can get crowded with naked hippies, both local and visiting, but not on a weekday. Not at this time of day. And definitely not when it’s snowing.

The sun is just starting to rise behind Taos Mountain, painting the sky in shades of pink, purple and orange. That, and the gentle snowflakes, feel like a perfect birthday gift from nature.

This hike is my own present to myself. I have to work in a couple hours, but I don’t want my birthday to consist of nothing but delivering mail. I want to do something to set it apart. I’m getting together with my friends for drinks in the plaza later, but soaking in the hot springs at sunrise seems like a great way to make the day special.

And get my mind off Chad.

My baby brother is serving over in Afghanistan, and hasn’t been heard from for months. Not even our parents—both retired Air Force officers—have been able to get a message to or from him.

Official word from the Air Force is that no news is good news, but I’ve had this low-level fear for him ever since he enlisted and it’s starting to get noisier. It’s probably unfounded. I’m a worrier in general, and I’m probably just fixating on this, but I sure would feel better if he would just let us know he’s alive.

I reach the end of the one-mile hike into the canyon that dead ends at the edge of the Rio Grande, and strip out of my clothes. I tuck them behind a rock because the neat freak in me doesn’t want to look at them while I’m basking in nature. It’s also why I prefer to come here alone. Other people don’t help me commune with nature, and they just mess with the landscape.

The softly falling snow means it’s actually warmer than usual, and there’s no cold wind. The hot water is going to feel heavenly. I take my time, stepping in slowly, savoring the contrast of the hot water surrounding my legs and the cold prickling my skin everywhere else.

I sink into the steam, settling my bare ass on the soft black sand so I can get my shoulders completely under water.

Across the river, on the slope of the opposite canyon wall, a movement catches my eye and I draw in a pleasured gasp.

A giant bighorn sheep turns his head to stare at me.

“Hey there, big guy.” I lift my hand in a wave, smiling. “Thanks for dropping in.”

He lowers his head to graze.

Satisfaction flows through me as I drink in the stillness. I sink even lower until the water covers my ears and chin and I close my eyes, enjoying the way the heat seems to soak into my bones.

And then I nearly jump out of my skin when a body plunges into the shallow pool from the rocks above. I stare at the chaos of water and body parts, trying to make sense of it. Somehow, impossibly, it takes the shape of a man—an extremely fit, naked man—who stands and stares back, seemingly as shocked as I am to not find himself alone.

For a moment, my brain short circuits. He’s insanely ripped—as if God invented some extra muscles for him. Either that, or he has more than his quota. Maybe there are people running around this Earth with muscles missing because this guy took them all. If so, then one of those people is me.

I sink a little lower in the water.

“Hi.”

That’s the only thing I can think to say to the magnificent, dripping specimen of manhood. I grew up as a military brat. I’ve seen enough shirtless man-chests to inoculate me against the appeal. But this guy’s tattooed pectoral glory might be the exception.

“Hey.” He attempts to cover his manhood with both hands, and backs up. I recognize him—he’s one of the ex-military guys Sadie’s boyfriend works with. The mercenaries. Huge guys. Muscled. Dangerous.

Super hot.

I grin at his attempts to be a gentleman. I think my presence startled him even more than he startled me. “You can come in. And you don’t have to cover up. Nudity is expected down here.”

His eyes crinkle and he smirks, turning slightly to shield me from the sight of his peen. Of course, that gives me a delicious view of his epic, muscled backside. “Yeah, sorry, but this gun is fully loaded for you.”

Oh. “Um, thanks?”

He laughs softly and walks toward me, dropping to his knees to hide said gun under the steam. I’m now oddly disappointed I didn’t get to see it.

“My bad. I never would’ve jumped in if I’d known someone was in here. I’m Lance.” He holds out his hand.
At night, the song of the coquí frogs chorus echo all around the stifling darkness. I creep silently over the rotting leaves on the rainforest floor, slinking into position. Channing’s already there on his belly, squinting through the sight of his sniper rifle.

“We got two guards on deck,” Channing whispers.

With our shifter hearing, we don't need comms units to hear each other. Nor do I need night vision goggles. That’s the reason Colonel Johnson created a special ops team composed entirely of shifters. He’s one of us. He knew how much we‘d be capable of when our abilities didn’t have to be hidden from our human counterparts.

A quick glance, and I clearly see the outline of two cartel members standing in front of the shack’s open door frame. Each of them hold machine guns.

“What do you think—hostage inside?” Channing murmurs. “Tied, gagged?”

“Gagged. Tied with rope.” That’s my guess, anyway.

“Don’t see any dogs,” Channing says. “So we wait for Rafe’s signal.”

I nod and strip out of my outer clothes, including dog tags. Colonel Johnson had special camo underclothing designed for us. The fabric is stretchy and flexible enough to accommodate both human and wolf form. I guess the army higher ups thought having our ding-dongs hanging out after we shifted back would make us feel vulnerable. Like we give a shit who sees us naked.

I shift, but try to maintain some control, to hold back my wolf. He’s antsy to get on with the hunt. The sad truth is that after years of war conditioning, he’s always ready for the kill, especially when there’s a civilian rescue involved. The need to protect sometimes overwhelms reason.

The signal is a long blast on a dog whistle, a sound no human can hear. When it comes, Channing and I dart forward. As a wolf, I’m faster, and I race ahead.

We're almost there when I pick up a rumbling sound up the road. Trouble coming in the form of an old diesel truck. Fuck! More kidnappers showing up to help stand guard.

My ears prick at the ear splitting sound of the dog whistle. Two short blasts this time—Rafe telling us to get out.

I try to turn back. To follow orders. The part of me that still knows chain of command fights for control.

But my wolf isn’t having it.

It’s too late—I smell the package. The frightened human who’s perhaps given up on being rescued.

It’s wrong to disobey a command. We may not be Special Ops any more, but wolves also follow their leader, and Rafe is our alpha. Still, I can’t stop my wolf. He needs to save the human. I bound forward, paws eating up ground as I head toward the shack.

“Abort mission,” Channing growls, but I'm too far gone. I leap, a silent shadow, onto the wooden platform.

The first guard dies almost silently. His body thumps to the deck. The other guard whirls, fingers scrambling for the trigger of his machine gun when two hundred plus pounds of wolf lands on him. He goes down, and I silence him with my teeth.

Permanently.

I hear shots and raise my head. My muzzle is slick, and there’s blood in my mouth. On the other side of the shack, our team attacks the diesel truck. I forced them into this by not following orders. It’s the only option now.

A few more shots, a growl from Lance’s wolf, and the sound of screams drowns out the chorus of coquí frogs for a moment. Then the truck engine cuts off, and there’s silence.

“Goddammit, Deke!” Channing whisper-shouts. He’s still in human form, slinking up to the deck with his rifle outstretched. “You were supposed to follow orders.”

My wolf bares his teeth at him.

“Fucking loco,” Channing mutters as he brushes by me. He follows proper protocol, casing each dark corner before entering the shack. A few seconds later, he starts talking in a low, soothing voice to the hostage.

I’m glad he can because I would scare the hell out of her.

I growl and turn away, my nose to the ground, making sure all threats have been eliminated.
