Monitors beeped. But most of the lights were off because it was late in the night and the patients were sleeping.

“What are you doing here?”

I immediately sat upright and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. “Waiting on results.”

“At one in the morning?”

“Guess I was anxious…”

“Well, they called me, and I have them.” He set the paper on the desk in front of me.

I blinked a couple times before I could actually read. “They called you with this? Why don’t they ever call me?”

He wore a slight grin as he sat down. “Because I’m Dr. Hamilton.”

I read through the report. “Substantial alveoli repair…reduction in inflammation…holy shit.”

Dr. Hamilton leaned back in the chair, his fingers interlocked behind his head, wearing a big grin. “Looks like it works.”

“We’ve got good news, Mr. Franken.” Dr. Hamilton flipped on the lights as he walked into the room.

I readied my stethoscope and moved to the opposite side of the bed.

Mr. Franken stirred slowly, coming to consciousness after his deep sleep. “Dr. Hamilton…?”

“I’ve got good news for you.” He patted his arm then hit the button on the bed, getting him to sit upright.

I pressed the stethoscope to his chest. “Take a deep breath for me.”

He looked at me and did as I asked. “Dr. Beaumont, what’s going on?”

Dr. Hamilton indicated to me, giving me the honors.

I smiled because this was a pretty good feeling. “Your results came back. Healthy tissue is regrowing…and the tumor is receding.”

Overwhelmed by what I’d said, all he could do was stare. “I…I…don’t understand.”

“It worked, Mr. Franken.” I smiled and pulled the stethoscope out of my ears. “Your lungs sound much improved to when I first listened. You’ve gotten so much better, and I think you’re going to keep getting better.”

“So…I’m not going to die?”

I shook my head. “Not from lung cancer—because you’re about to beat it.”

By the time we left the hospital, it was almost four in the morning. This was Manhattan, the city that never slept, so we went to a bar that was empty and ordered a couple drinks.

Dr. Hamilton ordered a scotch.

I ordered my usual cognac.

With one hand on his glass and a smile on his lips, he was the same relaxed man I’d seen at the cabin by the lake, a man in his element. “I know we’ve got a long road ahead of us, but this is a win—to me.”

“Fuck yeah, it’s a win.” I clinked my glass against his, failing to censor myself because I was too ecstatic to be professional. “Mr. Franken was on oxygen when he first came in. Look at him now. He doesn’t need it.”

“I wonder how it will affect the other patients.”

“It’s gotta help at least some of them. And if not—”

“We’ll figure out exactly what happened with Mr. Franken. Figure out why his body responded and others didn’t.”

“Exactly.” A few hours ago, I was falling asleep in my chair, but now I had so much adrenaline that rest was the last thing on my mind. We’d spent years on this project, going into the lab every morning, tweaking our experiment, working with the different mice, trying to understand how we could make this work.

Dr. Hamilton took a drink. “Imagine if we figure this out…how it’ll change lung cancer forever.”

“And other cancers—if we can understand it well enough.”

His eyes flicked away, looking dreamy. “Infinite possibilities…”

“This high is so high, it’s worth all the lows.”

He nodded. “Without the highs, I wouldn’t be able to do this. There were nights when I thought about quitting, but I talked myself into staying because I was leaving too much progress on the table.”

“Well, I’m glad you didn’t quit. I think the world is, too.”

He gave a shrug before he took a drink. “We have to be at work in a couple hours.”

“You’re joking, right?”

He gave a slight grin. “I never take a day off.”

“Well, I think tonight warrants at least a morning off.”

“True. I could convince my wife to call in sick…and make her breakfast.” He waggled his eyebrows slightly.

I gave a chuckle. “That sounds nice.”

He swirled his glass before he took another drink. “You and Daisy seem very happy together.”

It was the first time he’d directly commented on the relationship. Prior to this, it was as if he didn’t even know we were in a relationship. There was a distinct line between church and state, between colleagues and the father of my girlfriend. Put on the spot, I didn’t know what to say because we were happy together, but…it was complicated. “We are.”

He continued to stare at me.

Daisy wouldn’t talk about our relationship to him, at least not something that personal, so I knew he didn’t know about our woes. And if he did, he wouldn’t want me for his daughter. He’d stuck out his neck and recommended me, but he probably wouldn’t have if he’d known how I felt about kids.
But none of them get it. Neither do I. It’s an outside hire.
Atlas Beaumont.
My office showed my degrees on the wall, pictures of my family at the lake house. The picture frames of my nieces and nephews were at the edge of the desk, my pride and joy. “I’ve stared at these numbers a million times. I don’t see anything, but I feel like the answer is right in front of me.” She closed the folder and tossed it on the desk.

“I know, right?” I pushed the wrapper farther down my granola bar and took another bite because I’d skipped lunch—like always. “Sometimes, I need to sleep on it. Taking a break gives me the perspective to see something I couldn’t see before.”

“Definitely.” She straightened in her chair and pulled back the sleeve to her jacket, checking the time. “Tom was supposed to get the kids home and put dinner on the table, but he hasn’t texted me, so he probably took them out for ice cream.”

I chuckled. “He’s a good dad.”

“But not a good husband.” Blond and middle-aged, she’d been my colleague since I started at the clinic. She took time to run every morning, so she always fit into her skirts well and showed off those calves. “Just have to get through this meeting…”

“You think he’s officially announcing his retirement?” I took another bite of my granola bar, relaxed back into the chair, and put my feet on the desk.

She shrugged. “Could be. About time…he’s only eighty.”

I chuckled and kept chewing. “I wonder who he’ll pick to take over.”

She rolled her eyes. “You.”

I rolled my eyes back. “Stop it.”

“I’m serious. You practically live in this office, and you’re probably the smartest one here.”

“I agree with the first statement, but not the second. We’re a team.”

“Are you saying you don’t want the job?”

“Oh no, I want it,” I said immediately.

She chuckled.

“I really, really want it. But I wouldn’t be upset if he picked someone else because everyone here is great.”

She propped her chin on her closed knuckles. “You might feel differently about that when you have a family. Any free time I have, I want it to be spent taking a nap or cleaning up the house, and if not those things, then spending time with them.”

“Both of my parents have always been really dedicated to their jobs, and they somehow made it work. If I get the gig, I’ll make it work.”

“Then, no sleep it is.”

I chuckled and finished the granola bar and clenched the wrapper in my fingers.

Anthony came to my open door and tapped his knuckles against the doorframe. “Meeting is getting started.”

“Is there food?” I blurted.

He gave me an affectionate look. “Sandwiches and cookies.”

I pumped both of my arms into the air. “Yaaassss!”

Shelly rose to her feet. “You just ate a granola bar.”

“That was an appetizer.” I came around the desk and walked out with them to the meeting room. “Time for the main course—cookies.”

Dylan had slowed down considerably in the last year. He got through his seventies like a man in his fifties, but once he reached eighty, he just didn’t move the same way he did before. Running the office became more challenging, and he started to forget things.

The meeting began with a rundown of all the patients we had, what progress we made with each one, what results we were waiting for. We had only a few patients at any given time because we dedicated so many resources to each one. These were patients who had already gone to Stanford and Johns Hopkins, having illnesses that remained undiagnosed and unexplained. We were the last stop on the road—and if we couldn’t figure it out, nobody could.

There were a few extra sandwiches on the table, so I snagged another and took a bite.

Shelly eyed me, amused.

I kept chewing and gave a shrug.

I was the youngest physician in the office, and my colleagues had taken me under their wings like I was a child they never had. They found my weirdness endearing—thankfully.

Dylan cleared his throat, standing with his hands in the pockets of his slacks. “So, this has been a long time coming and you’ve been nice enough not to bring it to my attention, but it’s time for me to move on. Marge and I will be leaving Manhattan and retiring in the Hamptons, surrounded by our kids and grandkids, and I just had a great-grandchild…believe it or not.”

This was it.

Every member of my family was ambitious, and they reached the tops of their careers at young ages. If I became the director of the clinic, my parents would be so proud—especially my dad. I was young and had a long career ahead of me, and I wanted to spend that time making a difference in this world, helping people who had run out of options. The biggest problem in the health care system was false diagnoses. Not all patients fit into the cookie-cutter charts that doctors created. They were all unique—and they needed unique care. I believed I could give that to them.
But I miss her. Every day. Every moment. Always.
Maybe Sicily is the right person, just not the right time.
And if that's true, can I really just let her go?

Books in Series:

Soulless Series by Victoria Quinn

Books by Author:

Victoria Quinn

One

Dex

My life was so fucked up right now.

I hated myself for what I’d done to Sicily, for making her cry like that, for hurting a wonderful person who deserved to never be hurt. I hated myself for getting involved with her in the first place, for being spontaneous, for getting jealous of Dom, for finding her drop-dead gorgeous in the blue dress…when I knew I was too broken.

When I knew damn well I’d never be able to give her anything real.

It was the most fucked-up thing I’d ever done.

We promised we would always be professional, that we wouldn’t let whatever happened between us personally affect our jobs, but I didn’t expect her to keep that promise.

She didn’t owe me a damn thing.

So, when I showed up at the Kline Clinic and my morning coffee was on my desk, along with my favorite breakfast, I was surprised. Slow-cooked oats with chunks of strawberries and bananas. When I took a seat, I saw my morning schedule, my call list, and everything else that needed my attention.

But I didn’t see Sicily.

After breakfast and notes, I went to my lab and worked until lunch. I wasn’t as focused as I usually was, because my mind was half on the conversation I’d had with Sicily last night…and half on Catherine.

Getting married…un-fucking-believable.

At lunchtime, Sicily didn’t come into the lab to inform me of anything, so I excused myself and returned to my office.

She was there, perfectly dressed and done up like nothing had happened the night before. She placed my food on the desk along with a couple papers she needed me to see.

I stared at her, but I didn’t know what to say.

What the fuck was I supposed to say?

When she turned around, she gave a slight jump, because she obviously hadn’t been expecting me there. A flash of rage moved across her expression, but she quickly covered it up, adopting a look of indifference…with just a touch of rage.

I blocked the doorway so she couldn’t get out.

Her hands came together in front of her waist, and she stared at me, waiting for me to say something.

I felt like shit. Lower than shit. “I’m surprised you’re still here.” I didn’t want her to quit, because she was a godsend. She made my life manageable, helped me reach my full potential, understood me so well that I never really needed to explain anything to her. But I would never ask her to stay.

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

I didn’t answer the question. “I want you to know you aren’t obligated. You don’t owe me anything.”

Her expression quickly changed, disappointment creeping into her beautiful features.

“What?”

She cleared her throat before she shook her head. “Nothing.”

Maybe she hoped I would apologize and change my mind about the whole thing, but I never would. Being a terminal bachelor was the only option that made sense. Maybe it was possible to have a successful relationship, but I was too broken to have one now. I was permanently fucked up in the head.

“Unless you want me to quit?”

“No,” I said quickly. “No, I don’t. I just…don’t want you to feel obligated to keep your word.”

“I don’t feel obligated. You broke your word, so I can break mine.”

I winced slightly at the insult. “I told you I would try—”

“And you didn’t try.” She kept her voice steady, as if we were talking about something less emotionally explosive, the weather or sports. “You gave up. But that’s fine. Whatever. The reason I’m staying is because I believe in the work you do, and this isn’t just a job to me, but a way of life. My personal opinion of you is poor, but professionally, I still admire you as much as I always have.”

And just like that, she made me feel worse…without even trying.

“Let’s just move on, alright?” Instead of waiting for me to step out of the doorway, she squeezed by me, turning her body so she wouldn’t have to touch me at all, getting to the other side, her heels tapping against the floor less and less the farther away she disappeared.

With no motivation to work out, I just went home and lay on the couch. Sometimes I watched TV, but most of the time, I just stared at the ceiling. The year after my divorce was the worst year of my life, and now it felt like I was repeating it…round two. “How could she do something like that?”

A knock sounded on the door.

It was too much effort to talk, so I chose to stay quiet, just hope that the visitor walked away.

“Son?”

I closed my eyes and sighed.

He gave another knock, this one a little louder.

Derek had obviously told everyone. Now another intervention was on the way.

“I have a key. Should I just let myself in?”

I opened my eyes and sighed. “May as well…because I’m not getting up.”
Dex sat next to his sister, and after she congratulated him, she went straight back to teasing him relentlessly.

I sat beside Derek, who had his two sons in high chairs between him and his wife, who sat on the other end. His parents were at the other side, Derek’s daughter Lizzie with them. I wasn’t family, but they made me feel welcome.

“Dex told me about your work with rockets and everything. That’s really impressive.” I thought Dex was the superhero of the night, but I was still surrounded by highly successful people.

Derek turned to me, his glass of beer held at his lips as he took a drink. “Thanks. I’m hoping my daughter will join me when she graduates.”

I looked at Lizzie across the table then turned back to him. “No offense, but you don’t look old enough to be a father of a seventeen-year-old.”

He chuckled. “She’s technically my stepdaughter, but she’s blood as far as I’m concerned.”

I smiled because the rest of his family was just like him, with big hearts. “That’s sweet. What does your wife do?”

“When she’s not taking care of three kids and putting up with me, she’s my executive assistant at my company. Oversees my intern program, keeps me organized, handles all my emails, makes sure I stay on schedule with my writing.”

I had so many questions, but I went with the first one that popped into my head. “Your writing? Are you a writer?”

He nodded. “I write science fiction.”

“Whoa.”

“And a little erotica for my wife once in a while…” He smiled then grabbed his beer once again and brought it to his lips for a drink.

I didn’t know what to say to that last part, but it was still sweet that he was so committed to his wife. He was brilliant, rich, and gorgeous, but he wasn’t chasing tail and cheating on his wife. He was faithful, loving, and a good father.

Why weren’t there more men like that? “She works for you?”

“Yeah. That’s how we met, actually. She became my new editor at my old publisher and kept hounding me for my manuscript. I hadn’t written more than a few pages, so I ignored her. But she’s got an ass that won’t quit, so she wore me down. Long story short, she got my life in order, and eventually, we got together.”

It reminded me of what I did for Dex, but there was nothing between us. He always had a wall up around me, like I was never a consideration. Maybe I just wasn’t his type. Maybe he put me in the friend zone a long time ago and couldn’t see me in another way. Or maybe it was because I had an affair with a married man…and he was divorced.

Derek watched me for a few seconds before he said, “How’s it working for Dex? Must be terrible.”

I rolled my eyes playfully. “It’s been the most rewarding experience of my life.”

“Really?” he asked in surprise before he nodded across the table. “That guy?”

I knew he didn’t mean that, so I gave him an amused look. “He’s the best guy I know. It’s an honor to work for someone who cares so much about other people, who’s committed to helping people, regardless if they can afford it or not. You just don’t meet people like that very often. I used to be around doctors a lot, and it was always about the money and the respect. Dex…is nothing like that.” I glanced at him, seeing him talking to Daisy, a grin on his face because she’d said something that made him laugh. It was obvious the two of them were really close. “It breaks my heart that he was so apprehensive about getting back in the game, but it was also a pleasure to get him there. It’s one thing to earn a paycheck, but it’s another to earn a paycheck and love your job so deeply. Makes all the difference in the world.”

Just the way his brother did, Derek studied me for a long time in silence before he gave a slight nod. “Looks like you’re one of us—because that’s exactly how we feel about work. Even my mom really enjoys her work and takes great pride in what she does. She genuinely loves making the lives of her clients more convenient.”

“I know. She used to be my boss.”

“Oh, that’s right,” he said with a nod. “Daisy told me Dex’s office is pretty fancy. That’s your doing?”

I shrugged. “I mean, I worked with a designer, but I got everything set up.”

“I need to come by and take a look.” He looked forward and stared at his brother for a while, who was listening to his sister talk before he made a comment that resulted in a slight slap on the arm. “It’s really nice to see Dex this way. He already looks like a whole new person, the man he used to be.”
But when my patience dies on the table, I lose everything. And I mean EVERYTHING.
My wife left me. I lost my practice. And worst of all…I lost myself.
We talked about our options, our expectations, and I spent my time assuring the patient of a couple of things. One, that I was the best heart surgeon in the country, not to mention the world, and they were in good hands—literally. Two, without the procedure, they would die anyway.

I cared about my patients more than I should. That was my weakness, and I tried to be more pragmatic about my feelings. Instead of being a nameless and faceless person on the table, they were someone I cared about…like family. But it created anxiety and fear, put me in an emotional state when I needed to be resilient, so I tried not to care so much.

But this time was different.

Because the person I loved most in this world had everything to lose.

Catherine sat across from me at the table in the hospital cafeteria, wearing a red flannel shirt with black jeans and boots, her brown hair messy because she kept touching it anxiously. Her chin rested against her closed knuckles, her diamond ring glittering under the fluorescent lights, and a thin film of moisture would come and go in her eyes. “Dex, I’m scared…” She lifted her chin and looked at me, not her usually composed self. She wasn’t the strong woman I’d fallen in love with, but seeing her like this made me love her more. “This is my dad…”

My plate of food hadn’t been touched, and I sat in my blue scrubs, my pager on my hip, the sound of quiet conversations around me from the nurses and doctors on their breaks. My voice came out as a whisper, trying to console her as much as possible. “I know.”

“I can’t picture my life without him, you know?”

Oh, I knew all too well. My dad wasn’t just my father, but my friend. We were both physicians, so we had a lot in common, and I had no idea how he stayed so attached to every single patient when he’d lost so many in his career. How did he have the heart to care again and again? “Baby, I know you’re scared. I’d be scared too if this was my father. But just remember that I’m the best of the best, and I will do everything I possibly can to return your father to you in a better condition than when I got him.” My colleagues recommended another surgeon take the case because operating on someone you were so personally acquainted with was a bad idea. But there was literally no one better than me, and his best chance for surviving this complicated surgery was with me.

“I know.” She dropped her gaze. “I keep telling myself that.”

I stared at her face and found her presence comforting. She was my whole world, everything I would ever need for the rest of my life. It was my job to comfort her right now, but she comforted me without even realizing it.

“Promise me.” She looked at me again, pleading with her eyes.

I held her gaze.

“Promise me. I won’t be able to sleep tonight if you don’t.”

I never guaranteed anything. “I promise I will do the best I possibly can.”

“Dex.” Her eyes started to water. “Promise me that you’ll give me back my father.”

I inhaled a deep breath as I stared at her, feeling the weight on my shoulders, feeling his life in my closed hands as they rested on my thighs under the table. I would give this woman anything, even a promise I couldn’t keep. “I promise…”

The night before the procedure was simple. Catherine made dinner in the kitchen, we watched TV on the couch, and since I had to sleep well, we agreed I would sleep in our bedroom alone while she took a guest room in our penthouse. I never took drugs for anything, but I decided to take some Benadryl before bed to make sure I would get plenty of sleep that night.

Catherine and I barely spoke to each other. We were both stressed.

She was stressed she would lose her father.

I was stressed that I would kill my father-in-law.

A knock sounded on the door.

I left the living room and walked to the front door, already knowing who was on the other side before I even got there. I didn’t bother checking the peephole before I opened the door and saw my father standing there, in a black jacket, jeans, and boots. His lips didn’t rise with a smile when he looked at me, his eyes didn’t shine with inner warmth. Of all the people in this world, he understood the stress that consumed me.

I stared at him, our eyes level because we were the same height.

Dad nodded toward the hallway. “Let’s take a walk.”

I grabbed my jacket and didn’t say goodbye to my wife before I joined my father in the hallway, down the elevator, and outside in the cold, crisp air of fall. The pavement was wet from the rain that had come earlier that afternoon. Windshields still had drops of water on them. The cold air was nice on my lungs, cleansing them of the stress, anxiety, and everything else.
I sat in silence.

I couldn’t hear the city through the double-paned glass.

I couldn’t hear the wind as it swept between the high-rises.

I couldn’t even hear my own breathing.

I wanted to go to sleep and just forget this night, forget my mistakes, feel nothing at all, and not care about a damn thing. But I couldn’t do that. I texted Ryan. I’m sorry about what happened. I understand if you don’t want me there tomorrow. I didn’t want to go anyway. I dreaded showing my face when people still remembered my wedding, and now I dreaded it for a whole new reason. Kevin would have a black eye and a swollen face, and the pictures would commemorate that night forever.

You’re my best friend. Of course I want you there.

I gave a loud and frustrated sigh, wishing I’d been excused from the commitment. I wanted to throw my phone against the wall and break it.

Kevin woke up a few minutes later, so he’s fine.

I didn’t care if he was fine or not. I’m not sorry I hit Kevin, but I’m sorry I behaved that way at your rehearsal dinner.

We asked both of them not to talk to you, but they did it anyway. It’s not your fault.

Why were they both obsessed with talking to me? My hostility wasn’t clear?

You okay?

I wasn’t the one just knocked out cold, so I’m fine.

You know what I mean.

Was I okay? I felt like I was in a constant state of dread, constantly overwhelmed, constantly feeling like shit. My life had fallen apart right in front of my eyes, and now I had nothing left. I didn’t believe in anything anymore. I shouldn’t have believed in anything in the first place. But I gave the diplomatic answer. Yeah…I’m okay.

I drove myself to the wedding. I was in my slacks and vest, driving my Bugatti down the quiet highway since there wasn’t a lot of traffic to the Hamptons at this time of year. It was a sunny day. Freezing, but bright.

The passenger seat beside me was empty.

Emerson didn’t text me, and I was relieved.

I wouldn’t change my mind.

I located the house and parked far down the street; that way, the guests could park closer when they arrived for the wedding. It was a small ceremony, only fifty people in attendance. I wasn’t sure why we’d even needed a rehearsal when the wedding was so casual. If we hadn’t, none of that shit would have happened last night.

I walked to the house and let myself inside.

The place was empty because everyone was in the backyard. The wooden chairs were set up and faced a wooden arch with white flowers hanging down. The wedding was earlier in the day, at three, so they could get some warmth from the sunshine. It hadn’t snowed in over a week, so that was also a benefit to them.

Ryan and the guys were finishing up the last-minute decorations, doing it themselves to save money.

Kevin was there, with half of his face so swollen he almost didn’t look like himself.

I didn’t feel bad about it.

Some of the bridesmaids were helping out too, in green dresses with their hair pulled back. Tabitha was there, wearing a slight frown as she focused on a vase of flowers. Every time I looked at her, I hated her more than I did before.

I went back into the house and followed the trail of voices until I found Camille in the guest bedroom, standing in front of a mirror in her dress, looking as beautiful as Ryan promised she would.

Her mother and sister were in there, and they both looked at me like they’d heard all the details from the night before.

Camille turned around to look at me, and instead of looking angry with me, she gave me a slight expression of pity. “Can we have a minute?”

I stepped out of the way so her family could file out.

I shut the door behind me and walked up to her, looking her up and down. “You look…beautiful.”

She smiled. “Thank you, Derek.”

“But Ryan already told me you would look beautiful, so I’m not surprised.”

She rolled her eyes. “I could wear a burlap sack, and he would say that.”

“And he would mean it.” Camille and Ryan were the only constants in my life, the only people who stayed the same while everything else changed. I didn’t believe that love was a real thing, that people could be committed and honest with each other, but if anyone could actually do it…it was the two of them. Maybe other people could too, like my parents, but that just wasn’t in the cards for me. “I’m sorry about last night—”

“Don’t worry about it, Derek. I told Tabitha to leave you alone, and she just decided to ignore that request.”

“I don’t know why they won’t let me be. My feelings are pretty clear.”

My phone kept lighting up with text messages, and since it was synced to my device, they kept popping up on my screen too. They were all text messages from Ryan.

I’m proposing on Saturday night, in Central Park.

She’s not gonna have a clue.

That sexy bitch is gonna be miiiiine.

I knew he was eager for my reaction, so I quickly typed a response and moved on. Can’t wait. “I’ve gone over this a million times and think it’s perfect. All we have to do now is hand it over to the appliance team, and they’ll build it in the hangar. You want to take the night to go over it before I send it in the morning?”

“I agree,” Jerome said. “We should sleep on it.”

“We’ve been working on this for a year,” Pierre said. “I’m confident it’s the best rocket ever built. But yeah, let’s take the night to think about it.”

I disconnected my device from the screen then stared at all the details we’d invested so much of our time in. It was the first of its kind, with autonomous navigation systems that could connect to Voyager One and Voyager Two even though they were in interstellar space. Humankind was anxious to get to Mars someday, and that wouldn’t happen unless we had the equipment to get there safely. The distance wasn’t the issue for astronauts. It was the lack of gravity. That was a problem my big brain still couldn’t solve…and probably would never solve.

Ryan texted me again. We should celebrate sometime afterward.

Just give me a time. Once the wedding came around, I knew Kevin and Tabitha would both be there, and they would know I would be there too. So, all parties involved would probably be dreading it on some level. But as long as we didn’t speak to each other, it should be fine. I’d been pretending that none of them existed for the last ten years, and I could continue to do that even when they were five feet away from me. I wasn’t some pussy who would bow out just to avoid them. They were the ones who’d decided to be despicable people, so they could be uncomfortable around me.

I tried not to think about it because any time I remembered that night, I felt just as shitty as I had then.

Jerome and Pierre packed their things and left for the day. “See you later, Derek.”

“Good work today.” Emerson told me I needed to give more positive reinforcement as a boss because all I ever did was complain about everything that was done improperly. But being a leader was about celebrating triumphs as well as scolding shortfalls.

They both stopped and stared at me, shocked by what I’d said.

I lifted my gaze and looked at them. “What?”

Pierre raised an eyebrow. “I’ve just never heard you say that before…”

Was I really that bad? Guess Emerson was right. “Well…I’ll work on that.”

Jerome raised both eyebrows. “You okay, man?”

“I’m fine,” I asked in confusion. “Thanks for asking.”

They walked away, and I heard Jerome say to Pierre, “Emerson has really turned this place around…”

Yeah, she had. I dropped my head and got back to work.

An hour later, the door opened, and Emerson walked inside.

I lifted my chin and looked at her, watched her walk inside in high-waisted black jeans, a gray sweater that hung off one shoulder, and black boots that made her look like she was on the catwalk instead of in the lab.

My work was forgotten.

A slight smile came onto her lips, like she knew exactly what I was thinking. “You’re really handsome when you look like that.” She took a seat on the stool across from me.

“Like what?” I asked. “Turned on?”

She smiled. “Yes.” She set her purse on the workbench then stared at me, her long hair pulled over one shoulder, dark eye shadow on her lids, making her look sultry.

“I must always look like that when I’m around you.”

She ran her fingers through her hair then gave a shrug. “Most of the time, yeah.”

Ronnie greeted me the same way he did every morning. “Good morning, Mr. Hamilton.”

“Morning.”

Ronnie pulled onto the street and got into traffic.

“How are you?” Emerson smiled at me from her side of the SUV, her coffee in her hand, her hair in a slick ponytail so it would stay out of her face while she had her head bowed over my paperwork. She was perky, warm, a dash of sunshine inside the vehicle.

“Good. How are you?” I pulled out my laptop from my satchel and set it on my lap. The conversation with my father had taken place yesterday. Unfortunately, the rest of the afternoon was a bit awkward, and we never really recovered from it. It was nice to go to bed and wake up to a new day. My father and I rarely butted heads, and since I was a grown man, I didn’t appreciate the way he stuck his nose in my private life. But I reminded myself that my parents loved me in insane proportions, and they only wanted the best for me. That conversation was difficult for my father, but he did it anyway because he felt it was necessary.

“Great. How was your weekend?”

“Alright.” It was a little weird to talk to her right now, especially after the whole thing that happened with Pamela, that little brunette I brought home the other night. I’d compared the liaison to fictitious ones with Emerson—and I was extremely disappointed.

“Did you do anything?”

“I visited my parents at their cabin.”

“Oh, that sounds like fun.” Whenever she was cheery, it was infectious, and it lifted my mood a bit. “Where’s this cabin?”

“In Connecticut. On a lake.”

“Wow, that sounds like the perfect way to spend a weekend. Do you fish?”

“Yes. But we didn’t do that yesterday.”

“It was a beautiful day, so that must have been a good break from the city. I’m glad you did something fun instead of stared at your laptop all weekend.” She gave me a smile before she looked out the window and drank from her coffee. “How are your parents?”

“Happy.” When I reflected on my childhood, I had very few memories of the two of them ever fighting. They got along like two best friends. My father and Valerie…all they ever did was fight. I still remembered how sad my father was at that time, and the way he changed when he met my mom. “They’ve been together for a long time, and they’re still in love.”

“Aww, that’s so sweet.” She turned back to me, the affection in her eyes, like that really warmed her heart. “It’s such a good example to show your children. That way, they know what love really is, and they know what to look for. People get into these bad relationships, and sometimes, they never get out of them. It’s a good demonstration of how to love someone, and also, how to be loved.”

She didn’t talk about physics and science the way I did, where people immediately listened and thought I was a genius, but when she did talk, it showed her wisdom, how she was knowledgeable about things I didn’t even consider. It made me understand why my dad wanted what he had with my mom, not what he had with Valerie.

“What did you guys do?”

“Had some burgers and drank beer on the deck.”

“Man, I haven’t had a burger from a barbecue grill in so long…that sounds so good.”

“Well, my dad likes salmon burgers, so it wasn’t so great.” I shook my head slightly, a smile on my lips because he hadn’t changed since I was a boy. Sometimes on a special occasion, he would order a steak, but that was rare. The only time he had a slice of cake was on a birthday.

She cringed. “I like salmon, but if I’m at the lake at a barbecue, I want a real burger. A big, juicy burger with cheddar cheese, barbecue sauce, toasted bun…the whole thing.”

“Same here. And that’s really specific.”

She shrugged then took a drink of her coffee. “I’m a woman who knows what she wants.”

I released a faint chuckle. “Yeah. You are.”

“How long have you guys had the cabin?”

“My dad got it when I was five. It was my favorite place as a child. Still is.”

“Do you have your own cabin?”

I shook my head. “No.”

“I can hunt down a perfect property for you so you can use it whenever you want.”

The thought had crossed my mind before, but I’d rejected it. “I don’t take vacations, remember?”

She smiled at my joke. “But maybe you would if you had a gorgeous cabin on the water.”

I knew having my own place would never recreate the magic of my parents’ cabin. If I wanted to get away for the weekend, I had a key and the gate codes, so I was welcome to use theirs whenever I wanted. “Nothing will ever compare to that cabin, so I’d rather not.”

Winter came to New York early. The wind was bitingly cold, the first snow hit before Thanksgiving, and the sewers rose with steam because the air above ground was so dry. I hardly left the building because I was usually in my office collecting deliveries before I went to see my clients. But sometimes I did grocery runs, and when I did that, I was so grateful I didn’t have to walk several blocks to my old apartment.

Now, I just went upstairs.

I was sitting in the office finishing an email when Matt took a seat at his desk. “Are you living with Deacon now?”

A rock the size of an asteroid had been lifted off my shoulders when I didn’t have to lie anymore. Deacon wasn’t a dirty secret I had to hide to save my ass. I could tell everyone we were together, that we would stay together. “No. I’m just staying with him until I find an apartment.”

“Can you go back to an apartment after living in a luxury residence?” he asked with a chuckle.

It wasn’t the residence I was so fond of, but the man who lived in it. “It’ll be rough…that’s for sure.”

“I can’t believe you were together right under our noses and no one noticed.”

I shrugged. “It’s a big building with a lot of clients…and no one would suspect I would do something like that.”

“Well, I wish the same rules applied to me, because there’re some pretty sexy ladies who live here.” He winked.

“I doubt Mr. Kline would mind, honestly.” If I was going to do it, what did it matter if other people did it? As long as they weren’t adulterous affairs.

“Shelly Vancouver is awfully nice to me…”

“The supermodel?” I asked with a raised eyebrow.

“What? You think I couldn’t get her?”

“No. I just think she’s…a little ditzy for you. You’re very intelligent, Matt.”

He shrugged. “Intelligent men don’t want intelligent women. They want sexy women. Look at Deacon. He’s a genius, and you’re easy on the eyes.”

I definitely wasn’t a genius, but I still knew his love was more than skin-deep. But I didn’t tell Matt that. “Fair enough.”

“So, have you actually been looking for an apartment?”

“I’ve been dragging my feet a little…”

He laughed. “Maybe if you drag your feet long enough, he’ll just let you live with him.”

If I had it my way, I would never leave. It would be my home forever. “That’s not how I want it to be. I’ll move out, and maybe someday, he’ll ask me to move back in.”

When I entered the residence, he wasn’t home yet, even though it was pretty late. I texted him. Everything alright?

Just got held up. I’ll be there soon.

My things were still in the spare bedroom because I wasn’t so presumptuous as to move them. He didn’t want me to leave his bedroom last night, but that message was still unclear. Had he meant that indefinitely or just that evening?

I poured a glass of wine and opened the fridge.

He had his fresh meats and his veggies set up and ready to go because he washed his vegetables after they were delivered. I wasn’t a skilled chef like he was, but I wanted to cook for him, so it was one less thing he had to do when he came home. So, I pulled up a quick recipe for the salmon and got to work while sipping my wine.

It wasn’t too hard.

By the time I was done, he came home.

In the gray suit tailored to his muscular body, he moved inside, his satchel over his shoulder. He hated wearing suits and ties, which was unfortunate because he looked so incredible when he wore them. He carried his satchel to the dining table and immediately loosened his tie.

I watched him before I scooped the fish and veggies onto the plate, recognizing the tightness of his jawline, the fatigue in his eyes. It’d been a long day at the office, and he was clearly irritable.

I carried the plates to the dining table and set them down. “Okay, I know it won’t be as good as yours, but I’m sure it’s edible.”

He stared at the plate as he pushed his jacket over his shoulders and let it fall down his arms. He tossed it over the other chair before his fingers went to the buttons of his collared shirt, popping each one as he looked down at the plate. “You cooked dinner?”

“I know you had a long day, so I thought I would help…” Maybe I should have just left it alone.

When his shirt was loose on his chest, he finally looked at me, his eyes tired but kind. “Thanks.” He moved into me, wrapped his arm around my waist, and gave me a quick kiss on the lips.

I smiled when he turned away.
I just landed my dream job as an editor at the esteemed publisher, Astra Books, and my client is the infamous sci-fi writer Derek Hamilton.
The greatest writer of our generation--in my opinion. But it's not as wonderful as I thought it would be. I can't get this guy to respond to my emails, texts, or phone calls. Whenever I get him on the phone, he's a jerk that hangs up on me.
He's a pain in the you-know-where. Yes, he's gorgeous...but he makes my life a living hell.
When I corner him at his penthouse, I discover that he hasn't submitted his manuscript because he's too busy with his day job...as an aeronautical engineer. The guy owns his own company building rockets and other innovations. He's also a professor of engineering at NYU.
Of course he doesn't have time to write his next book...with a schedule like that. But I have to get him to write this book otherwise I'm going to lose my job.
Now I just have to figure out how to do that...

Books in Series:

Soulless Series by Victoria Quinn

Books by Author:

Victoria Quinn

Prologue

Derek

The top of the building was lined with white lights, matching the beautiful ambiance of the city as the backdrop. The long table was covered with a white tablecloth, arrangements of flowers all the way down. We’d finished the rehearsal at the church, and now it was time to have the rehearsal dinner.

Tabitha held a flute of champagne, mingling with family members and friends, stunning in a short white dress with her mother’s pearls around her neck. She had fiery red hair, gorgeous blue eyes, and everything about her was perfect.

My hands slid into my pockets, and I stared at her from across the roof, watching the subtle way her fingers tightened on the stem of her glass, the way she delicately pushed her curled hair behind her shoulder. She had the nicest smile, the kind that made all men weak in the knees.

Especially me.

The princess cut diamond ring on her left hand was small, all I could afford right now because I just finished my undergraduate degree and would start my PhD program in the fall. When I told my father I wanted to propose to Tabitha, he told me I was too young, that I should wait.

Why should I wait when I’d found the love of my life?

As I stood there and stared at her, I knew it would last forever.

More guests filed onto the roof, complimented the white candles spread everywhere, the hors d’oeuvres being passed around by waiters. It was the perfect evening, the perfect everything, and I knew my mother was the reason for that.

Anything she touched was magical.

It relieved the stress on Tabitha’s shoulders, and frankly, no one could do a better job than my mom.

A large hand moved to my shoulder and gave me a squeeze.

I recognized the touch before I saw his face.

“Beautiful.” He rubbed my back then pulled me in for a one-armed hug. “I’m very happy for you, little man.”

I was a grown man at his height, but he still called me by the nickname he’d given to me when I was just a boy. “Thanks, Dad.”

He patted me again before he released me. “I was wrong. A man in love should be with the woman he loves, and I can tell you really love Tabitha.”

“I do.”

His brown eyes filled with affection, and a soft smile moved onto his lips. He stared at me for a few seconds, his brilliant mind working behind his eyes, thinking a million things at once. He didn’t always say what he felt, but the look on his face usually did that for him.

My mom came next, Dex and Daisy with her. Dex was about to turn fifteen and would start college in the fall. He was moving to the West Coast because he’d been accepted at his first pick university—Stanford. Daisy was not quite eleven years old.

Mom’s arms moved around me, and she hugged me, holding me close, rubbing my back as she embraced me. “Just yesterday, you were five years old…and fifteen years have passed in the blink of an eye.” She pulled away, her eyes soft and affectionate, her palms resting on my shoulders. “So proud of you, sweetheart.” She pressed a kiss to my cheek.

My mother had all the qualities I lacked, the ability to communicate with someone and share their heart. She’d taught me how to be sensitive, how to enjoy the lessons of a good book instead of the chemical science of the universe. “Thanks, Mom.”

Her eyes softened further before she released me.

“I hope we’re as happy as you and Dad.”

She gave my cheek a gentle pat. “I’m sure you will be.”

People started to settle down at the tables, and it was time for dinner, for my future wife and me to say thank you to everyone for everything they’d done to prepare for this wedding. When I turned to look at the most gorgeous woman in the world, she was nowhere in sight. Neither was Kevin—my best man. “I’ve got to find my girl. I’ll join you in a second.”

My family walked away and took their seats at the end of the table. With all our friends and family combined, there were twenty-five of us, a celebration of two lives coming together like the collision of two stars.

I entered the building and moved toward the restroom, so I could press her into the wall and kiss her while I hiked her leg over my hip. Seeing her in that white dress all evening made me want to make her my wife now—not tomorrow.

I leaned against the wall and waited outside the bathroom.

But then I heard whispers.

“Kevin, I’m not sure I can do this…” Tabitha’s voice was easy to recognize because it was so soft, so kind.

Palpitations kicked in. Blood pounded in my ears. The serenity I’d felt just moments ago was gone—and I had a feeling it wouldn’t come back. My head turned to the railing in front of me, where the stairs began and descended all the way to the bottom of the building. I moved forward, my hands gripping the railing as I looked down.
