It was only meant to be a short trip—up to Chicago for two days and then back to Texas. At least, that was the plan until a massive snowstorm leaves me trapped in Chicago at a local hotel with no definite timeframe of when I can go back home. If that wasn’t a crazy-enough turn of events—I wake up to a beautiful princess standing in my hotel room.
She was definitely a sight to behold, but she’s not the least bit thrilled to see me—think Momma Bear finding Goldilocks lying in her bed type of annoyance.
You see, my princess turned out to be a tired and angry traveler who had been double-booked…in my hotel room. With no rooms left anywhere in the city, we are forced to bunk together to ride out the storm. Now all that’s left to determine is will we survive each other.
After a rocky start and some much-needed rest, Analise and I soon forge a friendship that turns into a no-strings-attached fling.
When the fairytale we got lost in melts away, we have an even bigger storm to weather that we never saw coming. The one where I’m faced with the uncertainty of having to walk away from the one woman who has opened a part of my heart I had thought was as frozen over as the city we found each other in.
Fated Hearts is a stand-alone novel and the last book in the Southern Bride series.

Books in Series:

Southern Bride Series by Kelly Elliott

Books by Author:

Kelly Elliott

Roger

“I’M SORRY, MR. Carter, but all flights out have been canceled due to the snowstorm.”

I sighed but then quickly flashed the older woman behind the American Airlines counter a smile and a wink. I traveled enough to know that if the issue was weather-related, they didn’t have to put you up in a hotel, and I knew things would be booked fast because of the storm. “It’s not your fault. Can’t control the weather, even if you do have lovely blue eyes.”

She blushed and leaned in closer. “We don’t normally do this when it’s weather-related, but I can offer you a hotel room over at the Grand Marshall since it looks like you may be stuck here for at least two nights.”

“Two nights?” I asked with a frown.

“It’s a pretty intense storm that’s moving in.”

I took a quick glance around the airport. Hotels were going to be booking up fast, and the Grand Marshall was a luxury one with a nightclub on the top floor. I’d be stupid to turn it down. I looked back at the lovely lady. “I think I should take that room before they’re all g–one.”

With a grin, she replied, “I’ll get you all taken care of. They always hold a few rooms for us just in case.”

An hour later, I stepped into my room at the Grand Marshall right outside O’Hare Airport. I walked straight to the bedroom, dropped my one bag by the window, shut the curtains, and then face-planted on the bed.

“Christ on a cracker, I’m fucking tired.”

I had been on the business trip from hell, and I swore it was the longest trip I’d ever taken. Considering it was only supposed to be two days, for me to think that showed how messed up the entire thing had been. Delayed flights getting to Chicago. Too much pizza and beer, and meeting after meeting. I hated negotiations, I hated pompous-ass businessmen, and I hated flying. I hated business trips, in general, and I hated being stuck in the frigid north where the temperature outside was cold enough to freeze my goddamn balls off. Not to mention I was hungry. The whole way here in the Uber, I had debated whether I should eat or just go to sleep. Considering I had made it to the hotel alive despite the daredevil driver, I decided to go for sleep.

My phone buzzed and I rolled over to pull it out of the back pocket of my jeans.

“What?”

“Hello to you too. What has you so grumpy?”

The voice on the other end of the phone was my brother Truitt’s. It was his fault I was stuck in Chicago in the first place. It should have been him here, but he had asked me to do him a favor. Never again.

“First off, asshole, it’s nearly midnight. I’m stuck in Chicago for what looks like another two days if this storm is as bad as they say it will be, and I haven’t gotten laid in at least six months. No…longer. Oh, and I’m hungry as shit.”

“Dude, that sucks big time for you. How did the meetings go?”

“Is that all you care about, the stupid meetings? Do you even care if I’m sleeping in a chair in O’Hare right now?”

Truitt laughed. “Please. I know you, and I’m almost positive you’ve sweet-talked yourself into a hotel room—and not only a hotel room, but most likely one that’s right there at the airport so you can get on a plane at a moment’s notice when they start flying out.”

I sat up and stared straight ahead in the dark. “My God. How is it you know me so well? They put me up at the Grand Marshall.”

Truitt whistled. “How young was the ticket agent?”

“I’d say she was around Mom’s age.”

Truitt laughed. “It’s scary how well I know you. Now, the meetings?”

With a sigh, I fell onto my back again. I could hardly keep my eyes open. “Truitt, I’m so fucking tired I can barely think straight. I’m so tired I’m not even going to eat. I’ve been sitting in a small, cramped boardroom with stuffy producers, directors, and suits from the network since seven this morning. It’s now almost midnight, and I haven’t eaten, I haven’t taken a shower, and all I want to do is sleep.”

“Fine, we can talk tomorrow, but can you at least tell me—”

I hit End on my cell phone, turned it off, and tossed it onto the side table. I got up and stripped out of my clothes before sliding into the bed. I didn’t even care that I hadn’t taken a shower. I didn’t even care enough to take the top cover off. I was that exhausted. I knew the moment my head hit the pillow, I was going to be out.

The sound of a hotel door opening and closing had me pulling the pillow over my head. Fucking thin walls. How could they call it a luxury hotel when I could hear every damn thing the person in the next room was doing? The couple next door had been having sex for the last hour and had only just stopped. One of them must have left, which would explain the sound of the door opening and closing. Now, it was finally peaceful, and I could get some sleep. I moved my pillow back under my head and closed my eyes.
It was only supposed to be for a few months, so where was the harm in going along with it? That is, until the fake engagement Landon and I came up with after a misunderstanding threw us both into the spotlight, and threatened to destroy the lives we had both worked so hard for.
Somewhere along the way, though, we realized everything had changed. So, we made a vow to one another when we crossed the line from being best friends to lovers, that neither one of us would get hurt.
But that’s the thing about promises made, they are often broken, and the fallout can be catastrophic.
So, when the real world comes crashing down into the fake world we’d created, neither of us knew who would break our vow first, and more importantly, which one of us would survive the betrayal.

Luke shook his head. “No!”

“Landon, not again,” Emmerson said as she ran up to me and started to pull on my arm. “Let’s go. It’s not worth you getting into trouble again.”

“You take back what you said about Emmerson, or I’m going to bust your nuts.”

My sister Hailey appeared next to Emmerson and sighed. “You really need to work on other threats, Landon.”

“What’s going on?” asked Emmerson’s younger brother, Noah, as he walked up and stood on my other side.

“All I said was I thought Emmerson was cute, and I wanted to kiss her,” Luke stated, shrugging his shoulders.

Noah threw his books down on the ground and put his fists up. “You even touch my sister and I’ll crack your skull open.”

“You know that neither of y’all will ever have a boyfriend,” someone said from behind me; I assumed they were speaking to Emmerson and Hailey.

Emmerson stepped around and stood directly in front of me. “Landon Mitchell Lewis, stop this right now. I don’t need you or Noah defending me.”

I looked around her and glared at Luke.

“Yeah, why don’t the two of you just leave!” Luke shouted, gaining courage from Emmerson sticking up for him.

Emmerson spun around and took a few steps forward until she was face to face with the jerk. “And as for you, I wouldn’t kiss you if you were the last boy in Texas!”

“That’s not what I heard,” Luke snickered.

Before I could make my move, Luke was down on the ground covering his nose.

“Oh my gosh!” Hailey shouted. “You broke his nose, Emme!”

I glanced at Noah, and he glanced back at me. Then we both turned our attention to Emmerson, who was shaking her fists and staring down at Luke.

Emmerson pointed her finger and said, “That will teach you to spread rumors, you little twerp.”

“What is going on…oh my goodness!” Mrs. Hathaway said, coming over to help Luke stand up. “Your nose is bleeding!”

Luke pointed at Emmerson. “She hit me, Mrs. Hathaway. Emmerson hit me!”

Emmerson turned and looked at me and Noah, put her hands on her hips, and declared, “I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself. I don’t need you two doing it for me.”

“Mrs. Hathaway, Luke was saying terrible things about Emmerson. Mean things!” Hailey called out as she took Emmerson by the arm and led her in the direction of the school.

“Looks like I’ll be calling your parents yet again,” Mrs. Hathaway stated while a teacher’s aide walked Luke to the nurse. “Won’t they be surprised to hear it was you and not your brother Noah throwing the punches this time.”

As they walked away, Emmerson glanced back over her shoulder and looked at me. When she smiled, I couldn’t help but laugh.

Someday I was going to marry Emmerson Wallace, and no boy would ever dare mess with her again.

Once I got back to my classroom, I tore a piece of paper out of my notebook and wrote her a note. With a smile, I folded it up neatly and wrote her name on the back.

No matter what Emmerson said, I would always stick up for her, and I would love her forever.

Landon - Present day

A SINGLE HAND waved in front of my face, drawing me out of my thoughts.

“Where did you go?” my father asked with a slight chuckle.

I shook my head and smiled. “Sorry, I was thinking of something I need to take care of later.”

My father pulled on the wire as I put a tie around it, twisting it onto the fence post. “Everything okay?”

“It will be.”

We worked in silence for a little bit before he clearly couldn’t take it anymore. “Want to talk about it? Is it Grace?”

It was my turn to laugh. If there was one thing about my dad, it was his knack for knowing when something was wrong with one of his kids. Hailey and I could never really get away with anything because our father always seemed to know when we were hiding something. My dad was, once upon a time, one of the most eligible bachelors on the NASCAR circuit. He had everything. Good looks—which I’ve been told I have inherited—money, and women. His heart always belonged to his childhood sweetheart, though. My mother, Adaline Lewis. But everyone called her Addie.

My father’s brown hair had hints of gray mixed in, but his eyes were the same color as mine. Blue or gray depending on the day, my mother always said.

“Dad, Grace and I broke up a few months ago, and we weren’t that serious anyway.”

He paused what he was doing and frowned. “You did?”

I stood and wiped the sweat from my forehead. “I need a drink.”

Dad followed my lead as we made our way over to my truck. I grabbed two bottles of water and tossed him one.
When I’m not a test pilot flying for the U.S. Air Force, I can be found risking my life in other ways.
Skydiving. No problem.
Bungee jumping off a bridge. Like a pro.
Paragliding in Switzerland. Time of my life.
Zorbing in New Zealand. Fun as hell.
You see…all these life-risking adventures are not just a hobby for me, not just a way to pass the time. I need the adrenaline rush like I need my next breath. I’m addicted to it. It’s the only thing that allows me to bury my painful past—even if only for as long as it takes for me to come down from the high. All that matters is that I’m able to forget. And every heart-stopping moment of it was working…at least, until she appeared back in my life.
Both my worst nightmare and my wildest dream all wrapped up in one beautiful woman…a woman I was still very much in love with.
And that’s not the worst part…
Linnzi Cunningham has no idea who I am. She has no idea how intertwined our terrible pasts are—and for that, she is lucky.
She doesn’t remember the night when everything important in her life, everything that she lived for, was taken from her by the man who promised he would always protect her.
That man was me.
To love her is to forget she ever existed in my world.

When something bad happens in your life, you are set down a path that will eventually lead you to something profoundly beautiful. You must simply be patient, darling.

THE VERY MOMENT I saw Linnzi Cunningham walk down the hall that first day of high school, I knew she was the girl I was going to spend the rest of my life with. She might not have known it then, and it may have taken me nearly our entire freshman year to get her to go out with me, but in the end, she was mine. She’d always be mine.

When I told her my plan was to go to the Air Force Academy and become a pilot, she didn’t blink twice. Even when I was gone for pilot school or deployed flying fighter jets, she never once complained. Linnzi knew my love of flying and that I was following in my own father’s footsteps, and she supported me a hundred-and-ten percent.

She was my life. The woman who made me the man I was. And today she gave me the best gift I’d ever received.

I hadn’t seen Linnzi for a few months since I had been deployed in Germany on a mission, and I came back to base after working all day to find that she had sent me a care package. Inside were goodies from our home state of Texas, along with an envelope that said not to open until we FaceTimed.

“What is this, Linz?” I asked as I held up the envelope.

Her smile was as big as the Texas sky. “Just open it, Nolan!”

I laughed while she bounced around in her chair. I could practically feel her excitement over the computer. “Does it have something to do with the wedding?”

I had asked Linnzi to marry me before I left for pilot training school, but with how crazy my life had been the last few years, we’d put off the wedding until things calmed down. We were planning on getting married this summer, and I had already put in for my leave. For three glorious weeks it would only be me and Linnzi, alone on a beach in St. Lucia.

“Nope! This time, believe it or not, it’s not about the wedding.”

I opened the envelope and looked inside. My heart beat faster, and I noticed my hand shook as I pulled out a sonogram picture. There was a red heart drawn on the picture with the words “la bébé” typed onto it with an arrow that pointed to a small spot. It took me a moment to let the French words sink in. Linnzi loved French and took it in both high school and college.

Then it hit.

My head jerked up, and I looked at the computer screen. “We’re having a baby?” I asked, my voice shaking slightly.

She nodded and burst into tears. “We’re having a baby!”

“Holy shit! They can tell it’s a girl already?” I said as I shook my head and looked back down at the little tiny spec that was our child.

Linnzi laughed. “No, wishful dreaming.”

For the briefest of moments my parents’ faces flashed through my mind. I lost them both in a car accident nearly a year ago, and knowing they wouldn’t be here when my child was born made my chest ache.

“I know this wasn’t anything we had planned, but it looks like we’re going to be starting that family sooner rather than later.”

When I didn’t say anything, I heard her clear her throat. “Nolan?”

I looked up at the laptop once more as her voice pulled me from my thoughts.

“Are you angry?”

My eyes widened in what I was sure was utter shock. “Angry? No, Linnzi, I’m not angry at all. This is all we’ve ever talked about. A family, a baby.”

She smiled, and I felt my chest squeeze. I loved this woman so damn much, and all I wanted to do was hold her in my arms. Tell her—no, show her—how damn happy I was.

“I wish you were here, I want to be in your arms so badly,” Linnzi said. “I wanted to wait to do the sonogram, but the doctor said we needed to do it and couldn’t wait until you came back. I’m so sorry.”

“One more month, Linz. Just one more month, and I’ll be back stateside.”

With a nod, she wiped her tears away.

“How far along are you?” I asked.

“Two months.”

“The wedding is in six months; you’ll be eight months pregnant then.”

She laughed. “I was thinking that maybe we focus on the baby and then get married after we have him or her. I’m not sure how fun it will be to be eight months pregnant on the beach.”

I frowned. “You’ve been dreaming about this wedding, Linz.”

“I’ve been dreaming about a baby, our baby. I don’t care about one silly day that will fly by so fast we’ll wonder why in the world we even had a wedding. I think we should plan a little trip after we have the baby. Maybe go up to Colorado and spend a couple of weeks.”
Anson Meyer is world-renowned for his record-breaking country songs, his devilishly good looks, and his really short temper. So after a heated altercation with a reporter, one that puts him in a pretty negative light in the music industry, Anson is temporarily kicked out of Nashville by his agent and sent back to his hometown of Comfort, Texas, to “cool down” and “figure out where he sees his career going.”
When Anson shows up in Comfort, though, he quickly realizes that not everyone is ready to welcome home the bad boy of country music. Especially the woman he is still in love with who served as the inspiration behind all those hit songs. Brystol makes it clear to Anson with one good hit to his nose that she is the last person in town who is happy he is back — and, surprise, she isn't the only person not holding up a welcome home sign. There are countless others…and he soon realizes that he has got some fence-mending to do all on his own.
What Anson wasn’t expecting to find was a sense of peace and belonging that he hadn't felt in a very long time. He also stumbled upon the best parts of his past life that he hadn't realized he missed when he left to pursue his dreams of becoming a singer. And, more importantly, the love he had for Brystol Overmann that burned even brighter than ever before.
Anson soon finds himself needing to make one of the biggest, life-changing decisions of his entire career.
Choose staying home or going back to Nashville.
Feels Like Home is a complete stand alone in the Southern Bride series.
I felt so at peace with her. Especially after we made love, which we had just done. The sounds of her soft breathing, the feel of her warm breath as it hit my chest. God, I loved her so damn much. And I knew what I was about to ask her to do was most likely not going to go over well.

“I met this guy tonight.”

“Hmm…was he cute?”

I smiled and kissed the top of her head. “He’s older. He’s from Nashville.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, he said I had the voice and the looks to make it.”

Bristol turned and rested her chin on my chest. “Make it?”

“Yeah. In Nashville.”

Her brows pulled in slightly. “What do you mean?”

“He wants me to audition for a record company. He asked me to come to Nashville.”

Bristol sat up and smiled. “He did!?”

I laughed. “Yes! He really thinks the record executives would be interested.”

Bristol crawled on top of me, and I moaned when I felt her heat. It didn’t take long for my body to react.

“Anson, that is amazing! I always knew someday you’d catch the ear of someone. Now, how should we celebrate?” She waggled her eyes and rubbed against me.

I placed my hands on her hips and smiled. “Give me ten more minutes and I’ll show you how.”

She giggled. “When is he thinking you should make the trip? Oh, maybe we could plan a road trip this summer!”

I swallowed hard. This was the part I didn’t want to tell her.

“Tomorrow.”

She laughed. “No, seriously, when is he thinking?”

“Bri, he’s leaving tomorrow and wants me to meet him in Nashville, the day after.”

With a look of utter shock, Bristol shook her head slightly.

“What did you tell him?”

“I told him yes. Bri, this is the shot I’ve been looking for. To be managed by a company like Big Music Management is a dream come true.”

She nodded and moved off of me, pulling up the sheet to cover her beautiful body. A part of me hated that she had done that. It was something she’d never done before, and I couldn’t understand why she felt the need to cover herself up now. I could see her mind working, and I knew if I could just make her understand that it would only be for a short time…

“Two years.”

“Two years?” she asked, her voice strained.

“He said if I can give him two years, he thinks I could really have a successful career. I googled him, and he represents some of the top acts in country music.”

“Wait, Anson, what exactly are you trying to say here?”

“Bri, it’ll just be for two years, that’s all. If things don’t work out, we’ll come back to Texas.”

Her eyes widened. “And if things do work out? Then what?”

I shrugged, not really having thought that far ahead. “I guess we’ll figure it out.”

She stood and quickly started to get dressed. We were in the guest house on her folks’ farm. A place we often snuck to when we wanted to be alone now that we were both back home after college.

“It sounds like you’ve got this all figured out.”

I slowly got out of the bed and began dressing. “Well, I mean, I told him I needed to tell you first.”

She pulled her shirt over her head and stared at me. “Tell me. Not talk to me first? You had to tell me. Did you really think I would just pack up a bag and leave with you tomorrow, Anson?”

“Well, yeah. I mean, Bri, you know how hard I’ve worked to get to this moment. This is it. This is my chance.”

She closed her eyes and took in a deep breath. “I don’t think I can do this.”

“Do what?” I asked, suddenly feeling a vice clench around my heart.

When she started to cry, it nearly had me falling to my knees.

“You’re asking me to give up my life. Have you stopped to think about me in any of this?”

“Of course I have. Two years, Bristol, that’s all I’m asking you for.”

She shook her head and fiercely wiped at her wet face as she stormed out of the house and headed toward my truck. I followed behind her and opened the passenger door as she climbed in, then I walked around and got in the driver’s seat.

“You’re asking me to put my own dreams on hold,” she said. “Why are my dreams any less important than yours?”

“They’re not, Baby, you know that. This is an opportunity I can’t walk away from.”

She stared off into the distance while she got her emotions under control. “Anson, listen to what you’re asking of me. You met a guy tonight at a bar in Austin. He promised you a meeting with a record company but told you that you have to head back to Nashville with him tomorrow. How is this okay? You want me to pack a bag, leave my family and the town I love, as well as my own dreams behind, for a crapshoot chance at a singing career?”
When it comes to luck, I’m on the wrong end of the good side with more mishaps than I care to remember. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a happy guy: single, decent looking, wealthy, with a waiting list of people who want me to make their kid’s dreams come true with my custom-designed playhouses.

My life was exactly how I wanted it to be. That is, until Saryn Night walked back into my life with the intention of firing me. Good luck with that. One strong-headed, opinionated woman with a three-year-old little girl had turned my world upside down within five minutes. The moment they stormed into my office — bright blue eyes, curly brown hair, and a smile that would make any man fall to his knees, and that was just the daughter — I knew I was in for one wild ride that was guaranteed to turn my luck completely around.

Now, for once in my life, I found myself thinking that maybe, just maybe, I could finally be Lucky in Love.

—Albert Einstein

Truitt

THE NURSE LOOKED at me with a stunned expression as she asked for the second time, “What did you say you think you broke?”

I sighed while my brother Roger leaned forward and cleared his throat. “His dick. Is it even possible to break a dick?”

After a glare directed at my brother, I turned back to the nurse. “There was a bit of an accident while we were hiking. I’m not going to lie, I’m in a lot of pain, so if we could make sure it’s not severely injured and figure out why my balls…I mean, my testicles, feel like they’re in the pit of my stomach, I would be forever grateful.”

Her eyes went from mine directly down to my junk. When she bit into her lip, I fought to roll my eyes. My looks were not something I was ignorant of. I knew women thought I was good looking. I had a mirror, I saw what I looked like. Good genes and a healthy regimen of food and exercise was the cause of said good looks and a body I was damn proud of. I fucking worked hard enough for it.

Most men would relish the attention of a beautiful woman, but I had grown tired of it early on. The idea that a woman wanted to sleep with me because I had a nice body and a pretty face wasn’t something that interested me anymore, or honestly, maybe ever. Unlike my older brother, who played his cards all the damn time.

“Are you asking me to examine you?” the nurse asked as a flush crept up her neck to her cheeks.

Roger laughed, and that caused her to focus on him instead of my throbbing dick. “That could either make his pain worse, or better, depending on if the idiot actually broke it.”

The nurse cleared her throat and tried to look me in the eyes as she spoke. “Well, you can’t break your di…I mean, your penis. You can, however, have a blunt force trauma to an erect penis where you could get a condition known as penile fracture. It’s not really a fracture, but it’s as painful as one. Was your…”

Her eyes drifted down again before they snapped back up. “Was your penis erect at the time of the…um…accident?”

Roger hit me on the arm. “Dude, if you had a woody while we were hiking, we need to seriously have a talk. How long as it been since you’ve, you know?”

Shooting my brother a look that said I was going to kill him if he didn’t shut up, I pulled in a slow, deep breath. “I wasn’t hard when it was hit by the branch.”

Her brows rose. “Are you sure?”

I felt my jaw open some. “Yes, I’m sure!”

“I don’t know, dude, wood seems to get you all hot and bothered.” Roger looked at the nurse. “He’s a builder, likes working with wood and his hands.”

She nodded. “Oh, I see.”

I shook my head at her. “Wait, what do you mean, you see? What’s that supposed to mean?”

The nurse shrugged and looked between me and Roger.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake, I wasn’t hard, hiking doesn’t make me hard. Wood doesn’t make me hard. Women make me hard. Women, only women.”

She started to chew on her lip again before she said, “Well, with a penile fracture you’ll hear a popping or a crack. It will swell, enough that you’ll notice it’s swollen.”

I looked down at my junk, then glanced up to see Roger and the nurse staring at it.

With a smirk, I replied, “That’s normal, it’s not swollen.”

“Oh!” the nurse said, with a slight lift at the corner of her mouth. “Is it black and blue?”

“Do you want me to pull my shorts down and look?” I asked.

A nervous laugh slipped from her lips. “No. I mean, yes. No, wait. We can certainly do a quick examination, so I can let the doctor know.”

Roger used his feet to push the stool he was sitting on closer to me. I looked at him blankly. When his eyes met mine, I could see the corners of them crinkle up. He was attempting to hold back a smile, or a big ass laugh.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“I want to see what a dick looks like when it’s bruised.”

I placed my hand on his forehead and pushed him back, causing the stool to roll away from me. “Get the hell out of here!”

The curtain pulled back and another woman walked in. A stunningly beautiful woman.

With a frustrated sigh, I said, “I’m sorry, when will the doctor be over here, I don’t think I need another nurse.”

The new woman gave a humorless laugh. “I am the doctor.”

This time my brother let out a roar of laughter as I closed my eyes and cursed inwardly.
One house. Two owners.
Paige Miller has inherited a house in the small town of Johnson City, Texas. She’s elated to be back and has already started making plans to remodel the one-hundred-year-old home exactly how she remembered it as a little girl. There’s only one problem.
Lucas.
The moment Lucas Foster sees the old home sitting on fifty acres of prime land, he has one thing on his mind. Sell it. However, there is one obstacle literally standing in the way of his plan.
Paige.
Seeing Paige standing in the doorway of his grandfather’s old home instantly brought back the feelings he once had for her. The dream of one day marrying her and raising a family in this very house. Neither is willing to budge on what they want, and soon they find themselves living together in the old home.
The house uncovers many old and hidden secrets, and Paige quickly discovers that it wasn’t a mistake they both inherited the house. It was fate.
There had to have been some sort of mistake. I had heard him wrong. My stomach clenched as I let the words sink in.

“I’m sorry,” I said with a bemused chuckle. “I thought I heard you say I was a co-owner of my grandfather’s ranch house here in Johnson City.”

He nodded. “That is what I said, Lucas.”

With a sharp shake of my head, I stated, “This is a mistake, Lou. I’m the only grandchild of William Foster. If granddad didn’t leave it to either of my parents, who did he leave it to?”

The old man attempted to hide his smile and failed miserably.

“Fifty percent of the home located at 4547 Ranch Road 175 has been left to one—” I swore he paused for dramatic effect—“Paige Miller.”

I closed my eyes, let out a soft groan. “Now I for sure heard you wrong. What name did you just say?”

Without opening my eyes, I could hear the lawyer’s humor in his reply. “Paige Miller, formally of Johnson City, moved to Arkansas to attend the University of Arkansas with a degree in International Business with a…”

“Minor in French. I know who Paige is, Lou, and you know I know! Why is she named in my grandfather’s will?”

The old man, who also happened to be my granddad’s best friend, leaned back in his oversized leather chair and gave me a smile. “I’m afraid the only person who knows is your granddad.”

I forced a smile. “That doesn’t help me any, Lou, when the man was buried three days ago.”

His smile faded. “That is true… Where were you again?”

Guilt hit me square in the chest. I’d never forgive myself for missing granddad’s funeral. Fucking Bianca.

Sighing, I replied, “Fiji.”

He snapped his fingers. “That’s right. Your momma said you and your girlfriend went there. Heard the girlfriend was expecting a ring. Did you ask her to marry you?”

“No, I did not. Can we please get back to this…mistake?”

“Ms. Miller was in my office two days ago and picked up the keys and a letter your granddad wrote to her.” He pulled out an envelope from the file and slid it across his desk. “This is your letter and your key.” Then he placed a single key on top of the envelope.

I stared at it. If I touched it, I might combust and set the whole damn office on fire.

Then I laughed, rubbed the back of my neck and looked at my granddad’s oldest and dearest friend. “This is a joke, right? Granddad pulling one over on me from his grave because he loved his jokes? I know he adored Paige, and always said I needed to get my shit, er, stuff together, but he wasn’t serious.”

He didn’t crack a smile at all. He actually looked a bit pissed off. “Trust me when I say this is not a joke. William knew exactly what he was doing. Read the letter, Lucas. All the answers you’re looking for start with that letter.” He jerked his chin toward the envelope.

I grabbed it and stood. “Half of the house is mine, the other half is Paige’s?”

“That’s right, as well as the land.”

A sinking feeling hit me in the middle of my gut. The land as well. Mother-freaking-effer. My first impulse was to sell it. Every time I stepped into that house I thought of her. Of Paige. The woman I now owned it with. Jesus Christ, this was messed up.

“Thank you for your time, Lou.”

As I made my way toward the door, he called out, “Welcome back to Johnson City, son.”

I placed my hand on the door. A part of me grew angry that my granddad had tried to force my hand. The plan had always been for me to go to college, then come back and work alongside my father and granddad in the family construction company. That all changed the summer after I graduated high school. I didn’t want that house or the memories associated with it.

“As soon as I buy Paige out and sell that house, I’m headed back to Austin, Lou.”

He frowned. “That’s a damn shame. We could use a man of your many talents here in town.”

I laughed. The idea that Bianca would even entertain the thought of living in Johnson City was a joke. She was already bitching about staying at the bed and breakfast down the road, which I actually thought was nicer than any expensive hotel we had ever stayed in.

“I won’t be staying, but thanks, Lou.”

Before the door shut, I swore I heard the old man chuckle and say, “We’ll see about that.”

Paige - Three days earlier

“PAIGE, SWEETHEART, THANK you so much for coming. William loved you like a granddaughter and missed you so.”

I wiped a tear from my cheek and forced a smile as Lynn Foster placed her hands on my upper arms and gave me a onceover. She’d always done this, for as long as I could remember. When I had walked into the home of Lynn and Carl Foster, my heart had been hurting. I had loved Carl’s father, William, like he was my own grandfather.
At eighteen-years-old, I made a promise with my best friend in high school. If neither one of us were married by age thirty-two, we would marry each other. Now Miles Warner is back in town and wants to cash in on that promise we made all those years ago.
The fact that Miles is still unmarried and single baffles me. The young man I remembered from high school has grown into one of the most handsome men I’ve ever laid eyes on. And he refuses to take no for an answer. You see, he needs a bride, and I’m his last resort. Romantic, isn’t it?
Well, no thank you. That is not going to happen. At least that’s what I keep telling myself. But as the days pass by and Miles settles back into life in our hometown, I find myself falling head over heels in love with him. Again.
What is the lesson I’ve learned, you ask?
Never make a promise you don’t intend to keep.

“Yes,” I replied and chewed on my lip. I wanted this badly. I’d been wanting it since Miles asked me to practice kissing with him so he could kiss Beck Williams. I couldn’t stand Beck Williams solely for that reason. The only thing that kept me sane was knowing I had French kissed Miles first.

I swallowed hard. “My folks are gone, we’re both curious, and a little drunk on my daddy’s whiskey. Plus, I want it to be you, Miles. I want my first time to be with you. I trust you.”

He smiled, and my knees felt weak. Truth be told, I wasn’t drunk at all and neither was Miles, although we acted as if we were. Once sex came up, we both seemed to sober up awfully fast.

My parents had taken my older sister June to a specialist in Dallas and left me in charge of the house and ranch. June hadn’t been feeling good lately and none of the doctors in Hunt could figure out what was wrong. When they decided to go up to the Children’s Hospital in Austin, I asked to stay home. I was a straight A student and really didn’t want to miss school, and my parents agreed. I might have only been sixteen, but I was a responsible sixteen-year-old. Well, that was until Miles and I got into my folks’ alcohol and hid up in the loft of my barn.

Taking a step closer, Miles brushed a piece of my hair that had fallen from my ponytail away from my face. “I want it to be with you too, Kyns.”

“Okay, then what do we do first?”

Something in his eyes turned dark, and it made my entire body shudder. Not from nerves anymore, but pure excitement. No, it wasn’t excitement; it was desire—which is what I heard all the older girls in gym class talk about feeling right before they had sex with their boyfriends. It was something deep inside my stomach and between my legs. I was horny, and it was all thanks to Miles Warner saying we should take each other’s virginity.

Yes, sign me up please.

Miles wasn’t my boyfriend. He was my best friend. The one person besides June who I could talk to. Who better to lose your virginity than your best friend. Right?

“Are you scared?” he whispered, kissing my neck.

Well, that was new, and I liked it. A lot.

“Yes, I heard it’s going to hurt.”

His hot breath against my cool skin made me feel dizzy. It was October in Texas, and unseasonably cold, but the loft suddenly felt like an oven.

Miles kissed me behind my ear and softly said, “Promise me you’ll tell me if I hurt you.”

Another kiss, this one at the corner of my lips.

Holy hell. When did Miles Warner become such a seducer? Not only was my brain going fuzzy, but I couldn’t find any words.

“Promise me, Kyns. Promise me right now.”

“I…I promise, Miles. I swear I’ll tell you if it hurts.”

Before I knew what was happening, Miles lifted his shirt over his head, and I sucked in a breath like it was my last one. I had seen him without a shirt several times, and each time I drooled like a silly, love sick girl. He might have been my best friend, but I wasn’t blind. The boy had the body of a man. None of the guys in our sophomore class could hold a candle to Miles.

I placed my hand on his chest, noticing the sharp inhale of his own breath. My eyes lifted to lock with his baby blues. Man, he had pretty eyes. A girl could get lost in those eyes, which I was currently doing.

“I sure hope we do this right,” he said with a wicked smile.

“Your P goes in my V. If we get that wrong, we have bigger problems.”

“You can call it a dick, Kyns.”

“What’s wrong? You don’t like the word penis?”

He scrunched his nose. “Do you really want me to whisper into your ear that I’m about to put my penis into your vagina?”

I shook my head.

“Neither do I.”

We both laughed. When I ran my hand down closer to his jeans, something in his eyes turned even darker. I loved seeing that look on his face—and knowing he wanted to do this with me. I would always be able to say I was his first. There was something so amazing about that. Miles Warner wanted me as much as I wanted him. We could pretend all we wanted that we were just tipsy and curious, but I knew the truth.

Taking my hand, Miles lead us over to the bunk beds, and he lifted my dress over my head, then reached behind me and unclasped my bra. It fell to the floor and I should have had the urge to cover myself up. Instead, I found myself working fast to undo his jeans and push them down.
From New York Times best selling author, Kelly Elliott, comes a new series her WANTED fans will adore. Filled with love, hope, and second chances, LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT, is book one in the Southern Brides series. Each book in this series will be stand alone books.
Love at first sight.
That’s what it was when Rip Myers came up to me in kindergarten. From that point on, we were inseparable best friends.
When I work up the courage to tell Rip I love him, I am met with rejection. He tells me he treasures our friendship too much. That statement might as well be a knife to my heart.
I want to hold out hope that he’ll change his mind. Instead, he moves on.
The only choice I have is to pretend that doesn’t slay me.
So, I say yes…to the man I love. But he isn’t the man I’ve been in love with nearly my entire life.

— C.S. Lewis

“KEEP YOUR EYES closed, Chloe.”

“Okay, but will you tell me what is going on?” I asked Easton, my voice laced with excitement and a bit of worry. Things between the two of us the last few months had been sort of weird. It felt like we were drifting apart. Or maybe I was drifting away from Easton, knowing that our college days were coming to end. He was going one way, I was going another.

He guided me up a step and then stopped me.

“Can I open them yet?” I asked with a nervous giggle.

Easton and I had been dating for ten months to the day. I was positive this was a surprise anniversary dinner and a way for Easton to attempt to bring us closer. Plus, it was my last night in College Station before I headed home. We had both graduated from Texas A&M and were about to start our careers. It wasn’t lost on me that we still hadn’t talked about how we were going to handle our long-distance relationship. Easton was taking a position with a drilling company in Houston, and I was headed back to Oak Springs to work for my family’s cattle ranch, the Frio Cattle Company. It had been my life growing up, and I couldn’t wait to get back. I missed the smells, and I missed my pet goat Patches most of all.

Even though my heart wanted to remind my head how much I missed Rip, I wouldn’t let it go there.

Warm breath tickled my ear as Easton whispered, “Open your eyes, Chloe.”

I opened them and gasped at the sight before me. Red roses filled the small private room of my favorite Italian restaurant in town. A rustic, round table held candles and two plates filled with my favorite dish, chicken fettuccine alfredo.

“Oh, my goodness. This is the most amazing thing ever!” I said, spinning around the room, then facing Easton. “You did all of this for our ten-month anniversary?”

He dropped to one knee, and my stomach fell. Oh, my God. This was not happening.

No. No. No. Please stand up.

“I did this because I’m madly in love with you, Chloe Parker, and I don’t want to live without you. I would be honored if you would please be my wife.”

My mind spun as I stood there, staring down at him, unable to make my mouth move. Easton wasn’t my first love. He wasn’t the first guy I’d ever kissed. Hell, he wasn’t even the guy I lost my virginity to. He was someone I had come to care about. A friend. A lover. But did I love him enough to marry him? This was not how I had envisioned this moment. My chest rose and fell, and it felt like it was getting harder to breathe.

A single tear slipped down my cheek as I forced a smile. Easton would never know that that tear was not because I was happy… It was because I was about to let go of the past. My past. A past I had held onto for so long that maybe this was a sign I needed to finally forget him.

Forget Rip.

Forever.

Chloe

SENIOR YEAR OF high school.

“Run, Rip! Go!” I screamed from the sidelines as Rip caught the pass and headed for the winning touchdown.

When he made it, I spun around and looked for Alyssa. My best friend. She was in the stands holding the sign we had made for Rip and Mike. Alyssa and Mike had been dating for two years, while Rip and I, well, we were simply Rip and Chloe. The two best friends everyone thought should be dating—but weren’t. I agreed with them, although I kept that little secret to myself.

Rip, on the other hand, hadn’t once hinted at wanting something more since sixth grade when he kissed me at the middle school dance, and my father unleashed on him. To this day, I blamed my daddy for scaring Rip so much that he became deathly afraid to even look at me wrong. But sometimes, I did catch him looking. And the way it made my skin flame and my lower stomach ache confused me.

“Chloe.”

The sound of his voice had me spinning back around and launching into his arms.

“You did it, Rip. You won the game.”

He laughed as he held me tight and then spun me around, make me laugh.

Once my feet were back on the ground, he shook his head. “Nah. It was the whole team. Hell, the whole town backing us.”

Rip Myers. Always the modest one, no matter what it came to. He wouldn’t brag how he had scored the most points in this game, or how he had won a full-ride scholarship to three different colleges who wanted him to play football, as well as a baseball scholarship to the University of Texas and Texas A&M. He would play off the fact that he was most likely going to be the class valedictorian, with me trailing in second place. I was okay with that, though.
