Mean. Fierce. Disgruntled. Prick.
It's easy for them to judge. They're not the only one on the ranch left without their mate. They're not tormented by a furious Kodiak bear.
With the heat barreling down on us from our past, They need a vicious bastard like me.
And when my mate finally comes into my life, At the same time as enemies from our past, I'll need to be as vicious as ever to protect her.
And that's just what I'm going to do. I'll earn the title of the fierce brother. Or, I'll die trying.
***The Dixon brothers are ready to show you how obsessed and insatiable a bear shifter can be! These Over-The-Top alphas are all-in with their mates!

Although, our Great Dane’s vicious growls turn to pathetic whimpers when I yank the soggy tennis ball out of his mouth. Moose looks up at me with wide eyes as I raise my arm. I launch it across the valley and he takes off running, kicking up dusty dirt with his four huge paws.

I sigh as the second beast growls at me.

He’s not as easy to placate. This beast requires something I can’t provide. Only fate can give him what he’s looking for and so far, fate has been a no-show.

My inner Kodiak bear snarls as I watch our white dog with the black spots clear half of the valley in no time. He’s livid that I’m standing here, playing with Moose. Outraged that I would dare do anything except search for our mate every second of my life.

Believe me, if I knew where she was, I would go to her.

But I don’t. And that painful fact is eating me alive.

Stop it, I warn my bully of a bear as he starts to pace more violently now. He responds with a savage roar and then starts trying to claw his way out.

His intentions are clear: If you’re not going to look for her, then I will.

I flex my muscles and grit my teeth, struggling to hold him in. He wrenches and twists my insides as he tries to wrestle and force his way out. My own growl rumbles out of my throat as I push him back down.

He’s feisty today, which is a nice way of saying he’s being a nasty feral fucker. My Kodiak has always longed for our mate, we both have, but lately, it’s been something else.

He’s desperate for her and he’s taking it out on me. As if I’m not every bit as desperate to find her as he is. As if I don’t lay awake every night wondering where she is, what she looks like, when I’ll finally be able to hold her in my hands and touch her sweet soft lips. As if my insides don’t twist and clench every time I think about her out in this dangerous world without her mate by her side.

I need her so badly it’s killing me. It always has. I’m thirty-four, the oldest of the four Dixon boys, and I’m the only one who’s still alone. Where is she?

I squeeze my body with a grunt as my cruel bear tries to claw his way out. I fall to my knees as I try to shove him back in. With eyes squeezed shut and jaw clenched, I feel a wetness on my hand. Moose is back with the ball.

I yank it out of his mouth and throw it with all of the frustration and rage I’m feeling. The poor dog watches helplessly as the tennis ball soars across the ranch and lands in the forest on the far side.

He lowers his head with a whimper.

“Sorry, boy,” I say as I drop a shaking hand on his head. “I’ll buy you a new one. I promise.”

He licks my cheeks and saunters off without a care in the world. Oh, what I would give to change places with him. To not be burdened with the bitter pain of longing.

My bear gives up with a growl and slips back down deep, hunkering inside with all of the softness of broken glass.

I punch the dirt and curse under my breath as I stare at the deep knuckle marks. It wasn’t always like this.

The yearning for my mate was always there, but it was never this crippling.

What changed?

I squeeze my eyes shut as I hear the carefree laughter of three happily mated couples leave the house.

All three of my brothers have found their mates. I’m the only one still flying solo. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy for them. Thrilled. It’s just hard to see everyone around you happily soaring up to the clouds with all of their dreams coming true when you’re stuck in the mud, helpless, hopeless, and trapped with an angry, frustrated bear who is too stupid or too heartless to realize that you have nothing to do with the depressing situation.

“Jacob!” Cameron shouts from behind me.

“Fuck,” I whisper. Why can’t they just leave me alone?

I hear his footsteps approaching when I don’t answer.

“You okay, bro?”

I glance at him over my shoulder as tears sting the back of my eyes. “Yeah. Fine.”

He exhales loudly. “We’re heading out for ice cream, why don’t you come with us?”

I turn back around and stare at the knuckle prints in the dirt.

“It would be good for you to get out.”

I shake my head. I love my brothers and we’ve been through a lot, but how can I explain to him how painful this is? He was the first of us to get his mate, a spunky girl named Mary who spilled a full pint of beer all over me when she came crashing into our lives. He doesn’t know what it feels like to be surrounded by love and be the only one rejected. The one lonesome, companionless recluse stuck on love island. It fucking sucks.

My stomach churns as we walk to the tiny rusted-up plane. I’d be worried about landing on those tires that look like they’re made of plastic if we weren’t jumping out of it in midair.

“We’re twenty, bitch!” Kindrie squeals as she wraps her arm around mine. “We’re indestructible!”

“I hope we’re not about to find out if that’s true,” I mutter under my breath as she pulls me to the plane.

I’m surrounded by my four friends and we’re all about to risk our lives (Kindrie’s idea) to celebrate our twentieth birthday.

We drove to this little mountain town in Montana this morning called Belgrade Springs and we’re spending the weekend here to celebrate. We’re staying at the inn in town and I guess going to the only bar they have.

The room had two double beds with a maximum of four people allowed and there were five of us. Somehow, I ended up in a room by myself while my four friends shared the other one. I don’t know how that’s fair, but I didn’t want to start a fight, so I let it slide even though it did hurt my feelings. If there’s someone who has to be left out, it’s always me.

Today, we’re parachuting, tomorrow, it’s either spending the day hungover lying in bed or lying in the local morgue if that rusty old plane has anything to say about it.

The pilot starts the engine and the prop begins turning loudly. The whole plane sounds like it’s being held together with duct tape.

I wave the thick black smoke out of my face and look around. “Where are the instructors?”

“This is the only place on the west coast that doesn’t require you to jump with an instructor strapped to your back.”

“And that’s a good thing?” I ask with a gulp. “Isn’t that illegal?”

“Totally!”

Kindrie high-fives Wendy like it’s something to be excited about.

“What are you so nervous about?” Wendy asks with a laugh. “Look at her, she’s so pale!”

I look around at all of the laughing faces and wonder why I’m the only one who’s nervous here. The office of this place was in a freaking barn, there are no instructors, and the plane looks like it broke down here on the way to the junkyard. Of course I’m freaking out!

“Here,” Kindrie says as she pulls out her flask. “Have some liquid courage.”

I take a deep breath as I grab the flask from her. It can’t hurt. It burns as I take a big disgusting gulp.

I still don’t feel any better.

“Let’s go!” the pilot shouts as he sticks his head out of the window.

Lindsay pulls out her phone and we all crowd together for a selfie beside the plane. We look like junkyard astronauts in these old gross suits. They all smell like wet dog.

Wendy, Lindsay, and Miley hop into the plane and I grab Kindrie before she follows them in.

“We’re going to be fine,” she says when she sees my face.

“I don’t know,” I say as my stomach groans. Maybe that shot wasn’t the best idea… “I have a bad feeling about this. Look at this place. It’s super sketchy. It looks like the set of a horror movie. How do we know there’s even parachutes in our packs? We could pull the string and blankets come out. Or nothing!”

I can tell she’s trying not to roll her eyes as she looks at me. Kindrie has always been the more adventurous one. She thinks nothing of walking up to cute guys in the bar and chatting them up. Every time she does that, all I want to do is sneak into the parking lot and go read in the car.

“We’re twenty years old, Ivy.”

I’m waiting for her point, but it’s not coming. She’s just staring at me.

“So?”

Now comes the eye roll. “So, we’re only twenty! We can’t die. We’re too young.”

“I’m not sure that’s how it works,” I say as the girls take selfies inside the plane.

“That’s exactly how it works,” she says as she grabs my nasty jumpsuit and pulls me inside.

She slams the door closed and the pilot takes off before I can say a word.

The girls cheer and holler as I squeeze my eyes shut and pray that this thing is not going to explode during take-off.

The small plane is shaking like crazy as we roll down the dirt runway. The pilot looks like he’s sixteen. They took out all the other seats to make room for more jumpers so we’re all sitting on the vibrating floor.

“Oh shit,” I whisper as the pilot pulls back on the yoke and we rise into the air.

With no seatbelts, we all slide to the back, falling all over each other. My four friends are laughing. I’m not. I’m terrified.

This sucks so bad.

Finally, the plane levels off at a high altitude. My friends start taking photos of the clouds outside of the windows as I look around the cabin.

My inner Kodiak bear growls as the scent of grizzly bears fills the bar. I turn around and see the four grizzly bear shifters from the Belgrade Springs Fire Department walk in like they own the place.

“Firecunts,” Cameron whispers under his breath as he glares at them.

Their eyes find their way to our table and they stare at us for a long heated moment as they walk in.

My pulse starts speeding angrily when I see Enzo walk in last. It’s been a couple of weeks since we spilled out of the bar in a vicious brawl. I don’t know what happened, either Grey bumped into Cameron or Cameron bumped into Grey, but whatever it was, the two of them went at it and the rest of us jumped in.

I was squaring off with that prick Enzo. He’s the mean-looking one with a scar on his jaw and the kind of crazed look in his eyes that would send most people rushing to the other side of the street. Not me. We went at it hard and that bastard tried to pull his bear out on me in the parking lot. He pulled his grizzly back in when the cops arrived seconds later. I hate that prick.

His eyes snap over to mine and we glare at each other as he follows his crew to the bar. They’re laughing and joking around as they keep shooting challenging glances at us.

“Just ignore them,” Easton says. He’s always been the most level-headed out of the four of us.

Cameron grinds his jaw as he turns back to his beer, no doubt thinking about the pregnant mate he has waiting for him at home. She wouldn’t be happy to hear that he’s out getting into trouble again.

I’m sitting with my three cousins—Cameron, Jacob, and Easton—at the Rub-A-Dub Pub. The three of them are brothers, but we’re so close and our fathers were twins, that we just go ahead and consider all four of us brothers.

“Let’s just get back to business,” Jacob growls. “Do you guys really think that Dylan Burton is still alive? I’ve asked around and haven’t heard a thing.”

“Greaser could have been lying to us,” Cameron says.

“I mean, I did throw him off a cliff,” Easton adds as he rubs his chin. “How could he have survived that?”

I’m trying to stay focused on the conversation, but my bear is snarling within. He’s all amped up and to be honest, so am I. I keep glancing over at Enzo and every time I look at him, he’s got that fucking smirk on his face that I so badly want to slap off.

We have unfinished business and I’m itching to finish it.

My bear lets out a low warning growl and my three brothers snap their heads toward me.

Easton’s brow is furrowed. “Are you okay? Should we leave?”

“We were here first,” Cameron says in a low voice as he looks at Grey, the huge beast that he fought last time. “They should leave.”

“Oh, come on, guys,” Easton says with a roll of his eyes. “Do you really want to tear the bar up? We’re still new in town and people already think we’re nothing but trouble.”

“We’re ex-mercenaries,” Jacob says as he stares the fire chief down, a huge grizzly bear shifter with salt and pepper hair named Quinton Kane. “Of course we’re trouble.”

My bear starts pacing angrily inside. He’s ready to go.

Ever since Cameron found his mate Mary and she started hanging around, my bear has been getting more and more frustrated that our mate isn’t here. He needs to blow off some aggression, some steam, some frustration, and that prick Enzo has the perfect face to unload all of our rage on.

But it looks like it might not be up to us. The four firecunts grab their beers and start strutting over. I feel my back straighten as Cameron’s hands squeeze into fists. My eyes never leave Enzo’s as he approaches at the head of the pack.

“This bar is our territory,” Enzo declares in his raspy voice.

Luckily, none of the locals at the Rub-A-Dub-Pub are paying any attention to me, from the hot guys playing pool in the back, to the hot bartender pouring a beer, to the three hot guys at the table by the empty fireplace.

Man, there are a lot of hot guys here. Maybe I should do a story on that.

I suck in a deep breath as I take a few more wobbly steps in these boots that are digging into my ankles.

Ignore the hot guys and focus, Mary. You have a notorious mercenary killer to catch.

“Oomph,” I grunt as I sit down at the bar beside a lady in her forties who’s drinking alone. “What a day, right?”

She raises her eyebrow as she looks at me skeptically and then turns back to her beer without a word.

“I love this song,” I say, nodding my head to the country tune belting out of the jukebox. They still make those?

“Who sings it?” she asks with narrowed eyes.

“That… guy,” I say with a cool, nonchalant, totally-not-panicking nod of my head. “The one with the cowboy hat who always sings about his truck.”

“Colton Bradley,” she says with a nod and a smile. “I love him too. He’s so hot.”

“Totally,” I say as I scooch over to my new friend. “Like the guys in here. Holy crap, they’re gorgeous. What are you doing sitting alone?”

She looks around the bar with a sigh. “You know the guys around here… They only have eyes for the one.”

“Right,” I say with a nod. “Which one?”

Her eyes narrow on me. “You from around here?”

I’m about to choke out a lie when the bartender comes to save me.

“What can I get you?” the big man with a huge bear paw tattoo on his thick neck asks. He’s enormous. I have to lean my head back to look into his light blue eyes. He should be on an NFL field dolling out concussions instead of behind this bar in the middle of nowhere Montana.

“I’ll take a white wine,” I say. Shit. The bartender and my new friend are both looking at me like I’ve just committed a cardinal sin. “If you have any…”

He leans down and opens the small fridge in the counter. I gulp when I see the hulking size of his back muscles through his shirt.

“I think there’s one back here,” he says as he pulls a wine bottle out that looks like it was opened sometime in the eighties with the missing label and orange color. “Want to try it?”

“I’ll just have what she’s having,” I say with a bad taste in my mouth. “And another one for my friend.”

I get out two twenties as he pours the beers and drops them in front of us.

“Here you go,” I say as I try to hand the bills over.

“What’s this?” He’s not taking them. Why isn’t he taking them? Do they have their own currency in this mountain town or something? Are people paying with cartons of eggs or bags of grains?

“Money… Did I not get enough?”

I’m pulling out another twenty when he laughs. “It’s two-fifty a beer lady. You owe me five bucks.”

“Oh,” I say as my cheeks start to get red. “Right.”

I pay for the beers, give him a five dollar tip, and stuff the rest of the money back into my purse.

“You’re definitely not from around here,” the woman says as she finishes her beer and takes the new one. “Thanks for the drink.”

“Where I come from, these beers would cost thirteen bucks each.”

“And where’s that? The moon?”

“It might as well be compared to here,” I say with a laugh. “New York City.”

“Ahhh,” she says with a nod. “I was wondering why your boots didn’t have a lick of mud on them.”

The whole pretending to be a local angle isn’t working, so I might as well be honest. My new friend doesn’t look like someone who appreciates being lied to.

“I’m Mary,” I say as I offer my hand.

“Lorraine.”

We shake hands and then settle in with our beers. Whoa, that’s strong…

I might have been better off going with the orange swill from the back of the fridge.

“You here on vacation?” Lorraine asks.

“I’m actually here for work,” I say. “I’m a reporter. Tracking down a big story…”

“Hmm,” she grunts as she takes another sip.

“Perhaps you can help me?”

“I don’t think so.”

“Maybe… Do you know a lot of people here in town?”

“I work the till at the grocery store, honey. I know everybody.”

Jackpot.

I take a nervous breath. “What about the Dixon boys?”
