Rome Hard is in love with his ex-teacher, Andy Evergreen. She entered his life ten years ago, and he’s tried to deny his feelings for her, but they won’t disappear.
There’s only one way to solve this: get her to fall in love with him.
She’s never fallen for a student, but Rome isn’t a student anymore. He’s a full-grown man, and he’s intent on making her realize it.
One date, that’s all it’s supposed to be. She never expected what could come next. One look, one touch, and it all leads to more. She should resist him, but how can she turn away from him? He’s everything, and no other man has made her heart race.
Rome’s all in, knowing this woman will be his wife and the mother of his children. But how far is he willing to go?
Will Andy fall for the last Hard boy, or will her fears keep her locked up in her cage?

“You’re a Hard boy. You know what you want.”

Rome Hard glanced behind him to see Andy Evergreen, his old high school teacher, sitting there drinking a coffee. Seeing as it was three weeks until Christmas, he had no doubt it was the white chocolate peppermint special the coffee shop had been advertising since before Thanksgiving.

Not that he was a stalker of any kind. He just knew what this woman liked to drink and didn’t try to pretend not to know her.

He picked up his black coffee.

Today was going to be different from all the others. He wasn’t going to take a table near or next to hers while pretending to read through paperwork. The truth was, he never took his work home or out with him. Being an accountant wasn’t exactly easy, but if there was one thing his father taught him growing up, it was to keep your work at work. There was always time to work, but it was important to make time for family.

In the past year, he’d made a lot of changes.

First, he’d moved out of his brother’s apartment and found himself a new place, completely for himself. It didn’t matter that his brother Caleb and his new wife had moved into a new place together to start their married life.

Rome hadn’t wanted to live in Caleb’s old place as some women late at night, drunk, would knock on the door, asking for some fun. His older brother had been a player, taking women for one night. Not that Caleb ever offered them more than what he could give them. That never happened, but it did all change once he set his sights on Lilly.

The waitress handed him his coffee. He paid for it and turned toward the woman who had been on his mind since he was a young fifteen-year-old boy. She was all he could think about.

Contrary to his brothers’ belief, he wasn’t a virgin either. He’d lost his virginity and tried to be with several women, attempting to rid his thoughts of the beautiful teacher who’d entered his world.

Her smile drew him in.

In the last ten years, she’d gotten even more beautiful.

She was thirty-four at the moment, about to become thirty-five. She’d never been in a long-term relationship, at least not one he knew about.

This was it.

He was tired of waiting around. Tired of moping. Fed up of seeing his brothers settled with their wives, enjoying their lives together, while he worked with nothing to show for it.

There was only one woman in the whole world who could make him happy, and that was Andy Evergreen.

As he made his way over to her, she took a sip of her drink and flicked over the page in her book. It was a Saturday. She had no need to rush off to the high school, where she worked from Monday to Friday.

She was one of the best teachers around, and when she first arrived at the school, all those years ago, a couple of the girls tried to find fault with her. Attempted to call her thick and stupid, to make her life a living hell.

Andy had fire.

She was smart.

Beautiful.

And those girls ended up having respect for her.

She earned her place, and since then, no one else had ever been good enough.

“Morning, Miss Evergreen,” he said and internally cringed. Could he sound any more like a child?

Andy lifted her head and smiled. “Rome Hard, what a surprise. Please, call me Andy. I’m not your teacher anymore.”

“You haven’t been my teacher in a long time.”

She laughed. “I know. I can’t think of how long it’s been.”

“A long time. Seven years total, nearly eight.”

“Right. Right. I didn’t teach you straight away, did I?”

“No. You got me senior year. I was eighteen.”

Was he reading Andy correctly? Did she have a blush?

“I remember.”

“Do you mind if I sit with you?” he asked.

“Not at all. How are Caleb and Lilly doing? I haven’t seen them since the wedding.”

Which was a few months ago.

“They’re doing good. I mean, they’re doing great.” He ran fingers through his hair. “It was a good wedding.”

“Yes. One of the best I’ve been to.” She smiled at him. There was that sparkle in her eyes that he’d do anything for. “So, I heard the rumors flying around that everyone is looking at you.”

“At me?”

“The last Hard boy. They’re all wondering who you will pick to be yours. Are you seeing anyone?”

Holy shit.

Fuck.

He hadn’t thought about this.

“No, I’m not. Actually, I’m glad you brought that up.” He had gone over this scenario so many times in his mind. What he’d say and do. Nothing was living up to his expectations.

He was the guy who planned everything in life. His brothers would piss themselves laughing if they knew he had a full notepad with all the ideas and writing down the conversations until he knew what he was going to say and when.
She rolled her eyes at just how stupid his behavior was. Everyone in town knew he was a player. The Hard boy rebel. The one who would sleep with you and forget your name the next morning. According to many of the women, he wasn’t a nice man. The problem was, Caleb was, in fact, very nice. He never actually told any of the women he’d be available long-term. They were the ones to assume they’d be the woman to tie him down.

So far, no one had tied that man down, and she pitied the woman or women who even tried.

Caleb got to the bar and let out a shudder. “Beer, please.”

Lilly got him his usual, placing it in front of him. “Maybe you should start finding another place to go pick up women. I think you’ve exhausted the town.”

“Nah, it’s just a rough night. How are you doing?” he asked.

“Me?” She frowned, glancing left and right, while also pointing at her chest.

“Yeah, silly. I was curious how you’re doing these days. Hanging out with Aunt Betty, that woman is a hoot. She warned me not too long ago about sticking my dick where it didn’t belong.”

Lilly couldn’t help but smile. Aunt Betty was the woman she lived with, and she helped keep an eye on her. Long story short, Eliza, Aunt Betty’s niece, had come back to town, fallen in love with the oldest Hard boy, James, and they were now happily married with a baby girl, Darla.

She adored Eliza and their little baby. James wasn’t so bad either, but Lilly had done everything she could to avoid men in her life.

Her mother was known as the town whore. She would sleep with anyone and didn’t even need a price to do it. Purely because of her mother’s reputation, Lilly had been branded the same, and as such, men thought it was well within their rights to touch her.

She hated it.

Working at the bar gave her a little extra spending money, while her work at the library gave her peace and quiet.

She’d had no choice but to give up her idea of college and had been working full-time straight out of graduation. One day soon, she hoped to be able to afford some night classes.

Her true passions in life were books and writing. Whenever she got the time, she sat at her secondhand laptop, typing away. In the past four years, she’d written over fifteen novels. All of them romance, none of them any good. She loved to write and read.

Caleb clicked his fingers in front of her face. “Earth to Lilly.”

She waved his hand away. “Sorry, I was off in my own little world there. What were you saying?”

“You really are an interesting woman. I was only asking how you are.”

Lilly chuckled. “I’m fine. Aunt Betty is fine. Have you been by to see James and Eliza?”

“Hell, no. I don’t go see them. I go to see that gorgeous niece of mine. She’s the only woman, besides you, that doesn’t give me the stink eye.”

“Oh, I give you the stink eye, Mr. Hard, just not for you to see.” She gave him a wink, laughed, and saw someone signaling for a drink. “Have fun.”

She turned and attended to several customers down the counter. Some of them regulars who were really nice. Others, not so much. Then there were the few travelers and tourists. Once they were all served, she gathered up the empty glasses, taking them around back to be cleaned.

When she came back, she saw Caleb still seated at the bar, and what was more, he continued to watch her.

“Are you making sure I’m doing my job properly?” she asked, hand on hip. She couldn’t recall him ever sticking around for long. In the last year, though, since Eliza had been back and introduced them, she saw him constantly.

“I know you’re good at what you do.”

She smiled. “Thanks.” Lifting her hand, she tried to stifle a yawn. She hadn’t gotten a lot of sleep the past few days.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine.” She glanced around the bar, seeing several women looking in his direction. “Caleb, why aren’t you hitting on any of the women? Don’t you need to find yourself a partner for the night so you can sneak out?”

He shook his head. “I’m not interested.”

“Your reputation will take a hit.”

“Let it.”

“Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard you like this before.”

Caleb rubbed at his face, and she studied him. His arms were heavily inked. The sexiest mechanic in town. Even before Eliza had introduced them, Lilly knew who he was. Her mother had a bit of an obsession with the Hard men. In all her years, she hadn’t been able to get into the pants of the Hard boys. That revelation shocked Lilly. Her mother liked to brag about proving men were scumbags only after pussy.
Twelve years ago, James Hard made a mistake. He never asked Eliza to go to the prom with him, losing his chance with the curvy blonde. She left town for college and the big city. Now she’s back, and he’s not about to let her slip through his fingers again. She will belong to him. However, when he knocks her over with his bike, he doesn’t know if he stands a chance.

Eliza remembers the Hard Boys’ reputation and she’s not interested in being another conquest, at least, she doesn’t intend to be. They’re older now, wiser, and being in James’s bed is better than anything she could ever imagine.

He’s not like his brothers. James wants more—forever, but he doesn’t know how to get it without chasing her away.

James looked at his youngest brother, brow raised, wondering where the question had even come from.

“You don’t bring it up, ever!” Jane, their mother, said.

“But seriously, there’s no way a woman can survive on celery. I don’t get it.” Rome pouted and fingered his food like it had some kind of disease.

“Maybe you should offer to pay for more than a salad,” Caleb said. He was the middle child, covered in ink—the rebel.

James watched his brothers, smirking as Rome tried to find something to throw at Caleb.

“I did offer to pay for whatever she wanted. I had a big juicy steak, and what did she have? Carrot sticks. Who orders salad without all the trimmings, at least? What about a dressing? Ugh, it made me uncomfortable. How can I even enjoy my food when I’m sure she didn’t even put it to her lips?” Rome wrinkled his nose.

“Who was your precious date?” James asked.

“Catherine Wire.”

Caleb groaned. “Nah, you see, there’s no way you’re getting much more than your di— I mean, er, there’s just no way you’re going to get much past her lips besides what she wants.”

James snorted, trying to hide it in his coffee cup. Their father glared at them, and then Jane shook her head. “Oh, please. You think I don’t know what you boys are talking about? I’m not some little virgin and I’m under no illusion about what my boys are capable of either. I’m also very much aware that Miss Wire has tasted all three of my sons at one time or another. Didn’t she go to school with you, James?”

“That she did.”

“Don’t even try to pretend you boys are innocent. You’re Hard boys, and I know what the girls all say. Once you’re hard, there’s no stopping until you’re … well, not.” She put her hands on Theodore’s shoulders.

Their father looked up at his wife with all the love in the world shining in his eyes. “We were young once.”

“We were, and your father was a Hard boy as well. You think I don’t know what you get up to? If I remember correctly, your father was a right jerk.”

“Boys, I used women. Took them, discarded them.”

Jane smiled. “Until he met me.”

“First woman in the world to never give me the time of day.” Theodore grabbed her hand, pressing a kiss to her inner wrist. This wasn’t the first time they’d heard this story. It was one their parents had told them many times.

“There was no way I was going to give my love to a man who liked to crush women’s hearts. That wasn’t who I was.”

“I pursued her for months. It took us making a bet to actually getting you to go out with me.”

“Only because you saved the cat in the tree and poor Whiskers hadn’t eaten in days. I was worried.”

Their mother was an animal lover. They had six dogs, four cats, and she’d even tried to adopt a small farm, but that was when their father had put his foot down.

“How does this help me to get a woman to eat?” Rome asked.

Jane laughed. “Find the right woman and believe me, you’ll know when she’s the right one. For now, do with Catherine what I know you care about. Boys. They really think we don’t know what’s on their minds.” She left the kitchen to go out to feed the dogs.

“Are you really hung up over Catherine not eating?” Caleb asked.

“I don’t know. It’s not normal, right?”

“Is this because you kept giving your favorite teacher all of your candy and fruit?” James asked.

Everyone knew when Rome was fifteen years old, one of the youngest teachers at school, Miss Evergreen, captured his heart. He had the biggest crush on her, and it was one of the first times a Hard boy became a nerd. Their reputation was fundamentally ruined because of it.

Not really.

There was no way anyone could call him or Caleb a nice guy.

Rome glared at him. “I guess you’re going to start looking at all the pretty flowers now, aren’t you?”

“Why are we talking about flowers?” Jane asked, coming back into the kitchen, a little out of breath.

“Eliza is coming back to town,” Caleb said.

“Eliza?” Theodore asked.

“Elizabeth Reid,” James said. “She’s coming back to town, living with her Aunt Betty again.” His jaw clenched as Rome started to smirk.

“Didn’t you have a crush on her?”

“No,” he said.

“You were going to ask her to prom,” Rome said.

James looked at his coffee, seeing it as far more inviting than anything else in their conversation. He didn’t need to hear what his brothers thought. Eliza. She hated her name Elizabeth. He never knew why, but whenever someone called her by her full name, she’d always correct them, and say Eliza. Even teachers.
