We met for the first time in high school.
As adults, we married. But it was all fake.
The wedding, us, what he did for a job. None of it was real.
Except it was.
They say he’s nothing but Mayhem, yet when he’s with me, he’s my salvation. Everything I need and more. The problem is…
He has a fascination for blood.
I can’t handle it, in more ways than one.
He has a fascination for me.
I hate it, even though I can’t stop thinking about him either.
Some people should not be together, and that’s us; we could never work.
But letting go is impossible when my serial killer of a husband is determined to prove me wrong.

Moments of Mayhem> can be read as a complete standalone or third in the series of the Hunter brothers.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

One

Mayve

My sweaty hands brush down my spandex suit.

Sucking in a breath, I place one foot in front of the other. Glancing down, my white Birkenstocks are on my feet, but other than that, everything else I’m wearing is black and red. I can barely make out the dirt path I’m walking on, and I’m hoping and praying to the gods I’m going in the right direction.

Walking to a party when it’s pitch black and you’re partially blind in one eye probably isn’t the best move. My other eye has great vision, and I can do most things normally like read, but sometimes, it’s a struggle. Yet here I am, trying my hardest to step out of my comfort zone.

I’m sure my co-workers didn’t think I would come. To be honest, I wasn’t sure I would either. But here I am, attempting to walk since I couldn’t get a cab and I’ve been with this company for so many years that I think its time I start attempting to be around them more.

The night sky is so black I can’t even make out the moon or the houses in front of me. My only sources of direction are the path I’m walking on and the navigation lighting my phone.

I hear laughter not far away and wrap my arms around my waist as I continue walking.

Don’t stop!

Don’t look anywhere but in front of you.

“Do you want to die?” I whisper to myself.

That answer is a firm no.

No, I will not die today.

The laughter seems to be getting closer, and my feet move faster.

My phone dings and tells me to keep straight for the next seven minutes.

The laughter becomes louder.

I hear my breathing become more audible, and I wonder if they can hear it too. A predator always knows when to come for their prey.

I mean, let’s be real. I’m dressed absolutely insanely, who wears red spandex out in public? Me, that’s who. And I’m second-guessing everything.

What the fuck am I even doing?

Can I turn back?

Is it as easy as that?

Would I be walking straight into the circle of those voices?

And the next question is, are those voices even friendly?

My guess would be no.

“Mrs. Incredible,” I hear one sing.

The hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and my feet move quicker but not too fast. I’m afraid to run. If I do, will it encourage them to come after me? But with each step, I hear them get closer and closer. I count to ten in my head, then I count each step I take. Ten steps—ten seconds, or maybe I’m counting fast. But when I reach ten, I exhale shakily and look over my shoulder.

That’s when I see them.

Two men laughing and gaining on me. I can’t see them clearly—it’s too dark for that—but I can make out their figures. Quickly turning back, I trip and fall forward, my gloved hands catching and saving me from landing face-first. My cell tumbles to the ground, and I hear it crack, but I pray to God it will still work. I stand as quickly as I fell, bringing my phone with me.

The men laugh louder.

Assholes.

My stomach feels like it will explode as nerves take hold while my breath is bursting in and out. I’m so not used to being in this situation.

My cell speaks again, telling me there are still six minutes on this path.

Shit. Six more minutes with them gaining on me with every single step I take.

I avoid people for a reason and walking down a dark street being followed by two men is my justification.

“Are they bothering you?” I startle at the sound of the voice—it’s rough and drops to a frightening whisper. “Do you want me to kill them for you?”

For some reason, I stop dead, which most normal people wouldn’t do. I’m sure of that. Why would you in this type of situation? I try to see his face by blinking a few times, but I can barely make out any features as his head is lowered and the midnight sky envelops him. I can tell his jawbone is sharp and strong. Can I see the color of his eyes—no. The color of his hair—again, no. I shouldn’t be walking around at night with impaired vision, as the darkness only worsens it. My inability to adapt quickly has me cringing and forcing all my other senses into hyperactivity. Should I flee? Should I hide?

“Ahhh, she stops,” I hear one of the men behind me sing.

I don’t dare turn around.

My heart races to a rhythm that is not pleasant.

My eyes flick to the man before me as he wipes his hands on his trousers. “Mrs. Incredible, interesting choice.” He pauses. “I wonder if you bend the same way.” I can hear the joke in his voice, but the way he says it frightens me, and now I’m worried if it’s him I should be concerned about and not the men behind me. His voice is laced with defiance and a hint of danger. Or maybe it’s the other way around. I don’t know.
We met at his ex’s wedding, where she uttered their safe word in her vows. Immediately his jaw clenched, and his hands balled into tight fists.
Then moments later, he told her I was with him. When in reality, I had snuck into the wedding.
As soon as I went to leave, knowing full well I should be far away from him, he gripped my arm and whispered in a low, intimidating voice, “Do you sneak into weddings often?” which had me stuck to the spot.
It took only a few moments for me to realize this man was dangerous. And the only logical thing I could do was to kick him where it hurt.
Little did I know that man was a hunter.
And it took him only a few days to find me…

*standalone*

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

One

Kyson

You are invited to the wedding of Lilly and Dale.

We ask that you dress in all white.

Please RSVP before the date noted below.

* * *

Swiftly, I crumple the card in my hand as I sit in my car, glaring at the venue where my ex is about to marry another man. I never thought it would bother me. I’ve been busy and being busy keeps my mind occupied. But right now I have the inclination to walk in and shoot up the place.

So why the fuck am I still sitting here?

Dress in white, it says.

Hmm, sure.

My head has been all types of fucked-up lately. And I can’t seem to calm down. Gripping my leg hard to get it to stop it from bouncing, I look up. There are a few people I recognize, mostly members of her family. I’m not entirely sure why I decided to come, maybe to convince myself I don’t need this; who would want this life she’s chosen when they could have one like mine.

Somehow the lie doesn’t sit right in my head.

My eyes scan the area outside; the wedding party’s cars decorated with white bows, the moss-covered building, also flush with floral arrangements, and guests filtering in, all dressed in white. An odd choice in my opinion, but what do I know?

And who am I to judge, especially with what I do for a living. I tend to stick to black attire.

We didn’t end on bad terms, Lilly and I, but nevertheless, we did end.

And that part was all me—absolutely no denying that fact.

Stepping out of the car, the man who has been patiently waiting so he can valet my car smiles as I hand him the keys.

Zuko, my older brother, told me not to attend.

I didn’t tell Kenzo, my twin, as I didn’t want to listen to the unrelenting backlash.

So here I stand, watching as guests file inside the venue. I stay until the last one is seen, and then I stand there a little longer than necessary.

The ceremony is about to begin, and I’m a little late.

Grinding my jaw, I turn back and think, fuck it, I’m out, but my car is gone, and I’m left standing there staring at the doors as the air conditioning from inside hits my back when the doors shut behind me. I haven’t managed to make it all the way in, the doors just there waiting for me to go in, the white carpet under my black boots is nice, and I bet by the end of it, it will not be as white as it is now. Flowers are everywhere; red, white, and more white. Grinding my jaw, I stand there unsure what I should do.

Should I go in?

I shouldn’t.

It seems everyone is inside waiting for the ceremony to begin, bar one, who doesn’t look up as she approaches. She’s small, tiny even. Her dress is too big for her, and yet she doesn’t seem to care as it drags on the ground behind her. Don’t women usually lift their skirts when they walk? I watch as she pulls a small flask from between her tits, puts it to her mouth, and takes a swig.

Fuck, she has the right idea.

Now I wish I brought some hard stuff of my own.

The tiny thing stuffs the flask back between her tits just as quickly as she tore it out before she walks up the stairs and pulls open the massive door. Then she’s inside and out of my view before I can blink—without even glancing at me once. Can’t say that happens often; women like to stare as much as men do but they can be more subtle usually. Yet this one didn’t even glance in my direction. Managing to walk in after her, I pull the very same door open and let it shut behind me. I spot a few of the bride’s friends, the bridesmaids, straight away. One of them looks up, and I can’t even recall her name, but I’m sure I’ve met her once. She scrunches her nose toward me as the doors open, the bridal party getting ready to start walking in.
Alaska

I lie to one of the city’s most ruthless men.
And it feels so good.
Deception is a drug, and I’m quickly becoming an addict.
Each time we speak, Zuko has no idea it’s me.
The lie tastes sweet leaving my mouth.
I couldn’t stop now, even if I wanted to—which I don’t.
He thinks our conversations are more than just sex. He’s wrong.
The intimacy he feels is all a facade.
Until the day an embodiment of my darkest fantasies walks into my bar, and his unmistakable voice sends a shiver down my spine.
It turns out I’m not the one in control.
But when he calls tonight, and he will, I’ll be ready…
… with a lie.

Zuko

My job is to hunt. Dispose of problems like they never existed. And I’m incredibly good at my job.
It’s brutal and violent. But, then again, so I am.
I crave destruction. Death is merely a consequence of my dark pursuits.
And I won’t lose a wink of sleep over it, either.
Nothing bothers me.
No one affects me.
Except the vixen with the lilac hair.
When I reveal my true self to her, she laughs it off, enticed by the game we play.
She’s keeping secrets.
And I know all about prying information out of people.
She won’t like my methods.
But I’ll keep playing her little game until I decide what to do about her.
I can’t tell if she is destined to be my wife…
… or my next victim.

*standalone*

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

ONE

Zuko

“You’ve reached Sage from You Beat It, We Spit It. First, let’s start with your name…”

That incredible voice rings through my phone, and I sit up a little straighter at the sound.

A swan. For some reason, her voice reminds me of a swan, lord fucking knows why, it’s not like they talk... But I bet if it did, it would sound like her—all grace and elegance with a melodic glide that can make a grown man moan.

“Hello?” There she goes again, making my cock hard with that damn voice.

Fuck.

Fuck.

“Sage…” She pauses at my voice, and I hear her breathing pick up. “You’ve been working a lot lately,” I tell her.

“That just proves you’ve been calling a lot lately,” she replies back.

Little does she know just how many times I call—many more than she can imagine. Hearing her voice eases a lot of shit stirring inside me and I fucking hate it, because no one should hold that much power without knowing it.

I can’t remember the first time I called or how I got the number. But now I treat it like a druggie treats crack, and I’m fucking milking it for all it’s worth.

That voice.

The way she says my name.

“Are you still there, Zuko?” She doesn’t say it in a voice of concern, more like boredom and one that implies I need to hurry up so she can get back to whatever it is she was doing.

Women either drop to their knees for me or run. Her? Well, she doesn’t seem to care.

And I like that about her.

A lot.

I hear her chewing gum on the other end of the line and listen as she blows a bubble and it pops loudly into the receiver.

“Yes,” I answer.

“Good. So how do you want to do this tonight?” she asks. “Would you like me to start by telling you how wet I am at hearing your sinful-as-fuck voice echo through the phone and calling my name? You know I enjoy it when you call my name,” she purrs.

“It’s not your real name, now, is it?” I reply. “Tell me your real name,” I urge.

She laughs. It’s not a playful noise, more of a “yeah, fucking right, not happening” sound.

“Zuko. Is that even your real name? It sounds made up.” A change of subject—she is so very good at deflecting.

“Yes, it is my name. Why would I give you a fake name?”

“Okay, we can agree to disagree, Zuko.” She says my name long and drawn out as it rolls off her tongue. “How would you like today to go?”

“Tell me… What did you do today?” I ask.

“Is that what you really want to hear?”

“Yes.”

“Okay. First, you tell me what you did.”

“I sliced a man’s throat because he annoyed me. It was bloody.”

“You always say the weirdest shit.” I can imagine her head shaking and the look on her face—pure boredom.

“What color is your hair?” I ask.

“Blue,” she says without missing a beat. “Though, I may change it tomorrow.”

“Why blue?”

“Because I was depressed this week and decided my hair should match my mood.” My lips pull at the side of my mouth. “Would blue hair bother you?” she asks.

“No. Now tell me your name.”

“It’s Sage. We’ve had this discussion. Honestly, this topic is getting boring, and you’re wasting my time. I’m working here, Zuko, so let’s do what you’re paying me to do, or shall we move on.”

“You don’t want to talk to me anymore?” I ask.

“If it’s dirty.”

“Go on… Tell me about your tits,” I urge.

I’m not sure when it changed, where I became more obsessed with listening to her than the actual words she speaks to me. But it’s addicting, tempting, and incredibly arousing.

“Hmm… You want to know how my fingers are sliding in my bra right now to touch my pink, taut nipples?” she whispers. “Or how wet the thought of you makes me?”

I say nothing—she’s used to it.

She continues. “Zuko, right now I’m imagining your hands gripping me, so fucking roughly it’s going to leave bruises… Marks wherever you touch me. Your hands are big, I know they are. And I’ll be marked by you for all to see. You’d like that, wouldn’t you? Your hands marking me, sliding over my ass, slapping it hard. Hmm…” She gives me her best moan, and I wonder if her real ones sound the same.

Probably different.

Definitely different.

“I’m going to find you, Sage, and when I do—”

She hangs up every time.

This time is no different.

Fucking burner phone.

TWO

Alaska

I fucking hate my job.

Despise it.

But it pays well.

And idiots are willing to pay.

Except Zuko.

He pays well, and is far from an idiot, I think.

That can’t be his real name, but I have a feeling he hasn’t got a reason to lie. His voice is so deep that whenever he does call me, I wonder why he needs my services. A voice like his should be making women drop to their knees to look up at him through their lashes with want and need.
