Second Chance Romance • Rockstar Hero • First Love • Small-Town Reunion • Forced Proximity • He Falls First

Tara Stillman was my first love.
And I was hers.
We broke up to chase our dreams—hers steady and close to home, mine loud and far away.

I became a world-famous drummer.
She became a veterinarian.
Years later, I’m scrolling social media and realize we’re both in the Hamptons. Same town. Same summer. That’s not coincidence—it’s fate daring me to try again.
So I borrow my friend’s dog and walk into Tara’s office like I never left.
Seeing her brings everything rushing back—the history, the longing, the way she still feels like home.
I lost her once chasing the wrong dream. I’m not making that mistake again.
I want a second chance with the woman who got away.
And this time, I’m not letting her go.

Just One Wish is a sexy, emotional romance featuring a devoted hero, a second chance, and the kind of first love that never really dies.
Originally published as part of 1001 Dark Nights. Same story, new cover

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER ONE

Axel

I adjust my sunglasses and lean back against a lounge chair, grateful for the first warm, summerlike day in June in the Hamptons. Xander Kingston’s dog, Bella, sits by my side.

An extra pair of glasses lies on the table beside me. I pick them up and prop them over the golden retriever’s eyes. “There you go, girl. That’s better, isn’t it?” I pat her on the head, and she stretches out on the ground, leaving the glasses in place.

I tip my head up to the sky and close my eyes, enjoying the heat on my face. As a California kid, my first winter in New York was a huge adjustment. I moved here last summer when I became the drummer for the Original Kings and spent the first couple of months bunking at the lead singer Dash Kingston’s house.

I learned fast that the band is a tight-knit bunch, all living in Dash’s home. Until a baby scare with a groupie put Dash in need of a fake girlfriend to fix his reputation, and my sister, Cassidy, played the role.

Now Cassidy and Dash are married, having wed in front of family and friends this past winter. I rented a house nearby, as did Jagger, the guitar player, and Mac, the bassist. But all of us guys spend more time at Dash’s home studio or here at Xander’s than at our own places.

Xander complains about the fact that the band followed Dash’s lead, making his house our home away from home, but nobody believes Xander really considers us unwanted company. And Sasha, the famous actress Xander married this past spring, welcomes us, as long as we knock first.

Given the Kingston family’s dysfunctional background, courtesy of their now deceased father, the fact that four of the five siblings are settled and happy gives a guy like me hope that I’ll meet the right woman. I’m sick of the rock-star lifestyle, the parties after the shows, the groupies, and the drinking. At thirty years old, I want a partner for life.

And if I can’t find the right woman?

I open my eyes and glance down at the dog that doesn’t belong to me, giving her a long rub down her spine. “We all know the truth. You’re my girl, Bella, right?”

She lifts her head at the sound of her name.

“Quit trying to steal my dog’s loyalty.” Xander walks out of his house and joins me on the lounge chair beside me. “Why is she wearing my sunglasses?” he asks.

I figure the answer is obvious. “Because it’s sunny out, and I’m protecting her eyes.”

“Know where she wouldn’t be squinting? Inside. Because when I’m not home, that’s where she belongs.”

Xander gestures toward the house, and I shrug. “Sasha let me in and said I could relax by the pool, and you know Bella loves being with me.”

Xander rolls his eyes. “When you finally buy a house, make sure you have your own pool, okay?”

I ignore him much as Xander’s brother, Dash, would do and pick up my phone. Out of habit, I begin scrolling through my social media. I have fan pages on both Instagram and Facebook that I pay someone to run and post fan-engaging photos. But if a comment strikes me, occasionally I’ll answer. Otherwise, I leave it to the professionals.

I also have a private page from my teenage days that only friends, family, and old acquaintances can see. I don’t often check out what the people I knew in the past are up to, and I don’t need social media to tell me what my sister and friends are doing. But I’m feeling nostalgic, so I begin to scroll through the friend page for the first time in ages.

Familiar faces are displayed in my timeline. Men I knew now have wives and kids, have just gotten engaged or married, or show off newborns in their arms. It stands out how different my life is from theirs.

One other thing stands out to me. “Jesus, these guys haven’t aged well.”

“What the hell are you looking at?” Xander asks.

I glance at my friend. “Facebook. Guys I went to high school with. Half of them are bald, and the other half have huge stomachs.” I shake my head and continue to scroll through the page. “The women look good,” I say more to myself than to Xander. “Do you ever go through yours? It’s like a blast from the past.”

Xander shakes his head. “No. Not a people person,” he pointedly says.

I chuckle and don’t take offence. Annoying Xander is like the band’s favorite pastime.

Another swipe of my thumb, and a familiar brunette catches my gaze. I pause. Gorgeous chocolate-brown eyes stare at me, eyes I remember looking into mine as I eased myself inside her. She wasn’t my first, but once I asked her out, she was my only.
From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Carly Phillips comes a new story in her Dirty Dare series…

Gabriella Davenport is a gorgeous, twenty-two-year-old virgin with a trust fund, vacationing in the Hamptons for the summer and running from family pressure to marry someone she doesn’t like, let alone love.

Maddox James is a sexy bar manager, older than Gabby by a decade. Though he made his fortune on Wall Street, he has returned to his working-class roots with a healthy distrust of wealthy women.

✔️ Grumpy Sunshine
✔️ Age Gap
✔️ Virgin
✔️ Good Girl/Bad Boy
✔️ Opposites Attract
✔️ Close Proximity

The last of the Dirty Dare series is here. Don’t miss this sexy standalone novella!

* *Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.* *

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

One Thousand and One Dark Nights

Once upon a time, in the future…

I was a student fascinated with stories and learning.

I studied philosophy, poetry, history, the occult, and

the art and science of love and magic. I had a vast

library at my father’s home and collected thousands

of volumes of fantastic tales.

I learned all about ancient races and bygone

times. About myths and legends and dreams of all

people through the millennium. And the more I read

the stronger my imagination grew until I discovered

that I was able to travel into the stories... to actually

become part of them.

I wish I could say that I listened to my teacher

and respected my gift, as I ought to have. If I had, I

would not be telling you this tale now.

But I was foolhardy and confused, showing off

with bravery.

One afternoon, curious about the myth of the

Arabian Nights, I traveled back to ancient Persia to

see for myself if it was true that every day Shahryar

(Persian: شهريار, “king”) married a new virgin, and then

sent yesterday's wife to be beheaded. It was written

and I had read that by the time he met Scheherazade,

the vizier's daughter, he’d killed one thousand

women.

Something went wrong with my efforts. I arrived

in the midst of the story and somehow exchanged

places with Scheherazade – a phenomena that had

never occurred before and that still to this day, I

cannot explain.

Now I am trapped in that ancient past. I have

taken on Scheherazade’s life and the only way I can

protect myself and stay alive is to do what she did to

protect herself and stay alive.

Every night the King calls for me and listens as I spin tales.

And when the evening ends and dawn breaks, I stop at a

point that leaves him breathless and yearning for more.

And so the King spares my life for one more day, so that

he might hear the rest of my dark tale.

As soon as I finish a story... I begin a new

one... like the one that you, dear reader, have before

you now.

Chapter One

Gabriella Davenport sat in the library of her parents’ summer house, hiding out from all the stuffy guests they had invited to their annual dinner party in the Hamptons. These events reeked of superiority, something exhibited by her mother, Madeline, her father, Aaron, and everyone else at this event. Gabby wasn’t like her friends in her social circles. Oh, she’d learned early on how to play the game well enough, not wanting to stand out or be lonely growing up. But she’d never been one of them.

She’d escaped the party and pulled up the reading app on her phone. She was in the middle of a steamy romance about a blue-collar guy and a runaway heiress bride who found herself stuck in a small town with a broken-down vehicle.

The author was one of Gabby’s favorites, her love scenes catnip to a virgin like herself. At twenty-two, she should have given it up long before now, as had most of the girls at the private Manhattan high school she’d attended. She’d been privy to many locker room conversations she wished she could unhear.

The same talks occurred between her friends at Columbia University. She’d graduated a few weeks earlier and wondered if she’d keep any of those friendships, either. The men she’d met in college weren’t any better than the adults in the other room. In other words, full of themselves, entitled, and utterly unappealing.

She was saving herself for the one. If that made her a romantic, so be it, she thought, turning her attention back to her book, where the sexy hero had pinned the heroine against the wall. He was about to take her hard when the creaking sound of the library door opening interrupted Gabby’s reading.

Annoyed, she looked up to find Preston Barrett III standing in the entry. “There you are. Your mother sent me to see where you’d disappeared to.”

Of course she had, since her parents were actively trying to pair her off with Preston in an attempt to cement their status with his family, and to curb Gabby’s more common tendencies. Because for some reason, her enjoying painting and wanting to work instead of giving parties and playing the socialite wife was an embarrassment to them. Her parents acted like they were the Vanderbilts instead of second-generation wealth.

Preston ran a hand over his perfectly styled blond hair. “You’re missing the party.”

He picked a nonexistent piece of lint off of his light blue Brioni jacket that he’d matched with navy dress pants, and a pale-blue button down shirt. Navy drivers were on his feet. He was a mini-version of his father, Preston Barrett, Jr. And if Gabby just happened to be name-dropping when taking in his outfit, it was because he did it when bragging, which was often.

She lifted one shoulder. “That was the point. It was stuffy with all those people milling around and I was looking for a little privacy.” Why beat around the bush when the truth would do?
He’s the last single Dare sibling standing.
She’s his lost love who disappeared.
Now she’s back, bringing secrets and danger.

Hadley Stevens is on the run with her younger sister—again—but this time, she’s in control. Zach Dare might hate her, but she knows he’d never turn away someone in need. He’s the only man she trusts. The man she’s never gotten over. Even if she left him without a word.

Zach never expected the girl he once loved to walk into his bar. The last time he saw her, he’d dropped her off after school and promised to pick her up for prom. Except she disappeared.

Now, she’s back with a new name, but the same doe eyes and pouty lips, and she’s asking for the help he would have gladly given her all those years ago.

Zach agrees to protect them, but he refuses to fall for Hadley again. But late nights working side by side give them a tempting glimpse at the life they could have had…and all the reasons he loved her come flooding back.

He’ll have to keep her safe.

Before he can convince her to stay.

*Though connected by family, all books stand alone.'

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Hadley Stevens loved her job but this time of year always turned high school kids into fidgety, hormonal savages thanks to being stuck inside a stuffy brick building seven hours a day, five days a week. They were so close to summer freedom, even she could relate to their restless spirits.

The sun shone overhead as she walked to her car. Coworkers also strode to their vehicles and Hadley knew without asking they were all grateful it was the second to last Friday of the school year. It helped that the weather was warm, even for mid-June in Braxton, Illinois, giving everyone an extra pep in their step. Hadley had no plans for the weekend beyond reading and relaxing, and if the weather stayed nice, she would sit outside and chill.

The house she lived in with her father, Gregg, and thirteen-year-old sister, Danika, had a small patio in the backyard where Hadley always found peace. No doubt some of this weekend would include shuffling Dani to and from a friend’s house, too, something Hadley didn’t mind at all.

She approached her car, key fob in hand when a man strode up beside her, his shadow blocking the sun.

“Hadley Stevens.” He said her name in a low voice.

She stiffened and looked up, recognizing him immediately. He was one of the sleazy men who’d been meeting with her father in their home most evenings, hanging out in their family room, and eyeing her just-developing thirteen-year-old sister with lust-filled eyes. Their perversion scared Hadley to no end and she always kept Dani within arm’s reach until the men left.

“What do you want?” Hadley slid her finger over the alarm on her key fob.

He grasped her wrist tight enough to bruise. “Don’t. Hear me out and nobody has to get hurt.” He slid his jacket aside, revealing a holstered gun.

Shaking now, she straightened her shoulders and refused to show more fear. “I’m listening.”

“Tell your father if he doesn’t do what we asked, we’ll take you and your pretty little sister as payment instead.” Releasing her wrist, he strode off, mixing in with the male and female teachers in the lot.

Trembling, she could barely unlock her car door and when she finally climbed inside, she jammed her finger against the door-lock button four times before she convinced herself she was safe.

Dani, she thought, her stomach twisting in knots. She had to get home to her sister. The plan calmed her down enough to drive but the past she’d been told to forget crashed through her mind for the duration of the fifteen-minute trip.

Hadley had just come home from shopping for last-minute makeup and hair clips for her boyfriend’s prom night. Getting out of his car, she was high on life and excited to be his date for the senior prom. He didn’t care that she was a junior. She and Zach Dare had been friends for years and a couple for almost eight months. And she planned to give him her virginity on prom night.

Except there’d been no prom. Not for her. And probably not for Zach, either. When Hadley had walked into her house that day eleven years ago, she’d been greeted by her father and the federal agents who’d relocated them that night, changing her name, her identity and altering the course of her life forever. She was sure Zach hated her for abandoning him without a word and did her best not to think about the cute boy she thought she’d loved.

Now, as she approached the home where she’d lived since being uprooted from everything and everyone she knew, that same gut-churning feeling returned. She already knew her father had gotten involved with the wrong people again but this time, she doubted they’d have government protection to keep her and Dani safe.

She pulled into the driveway, relieved to find it empty with no other cars on the street. It didn’t mean the men weren’t inside the house, but it gave her some hope. She glanced at the small home and though the white paint was chipped in places, she’d done her best to keep the grounds pretty by planting flowers and bulbs that bloomed yearly.

She pulled her car into the garage beside her father’s vehicle and tapped the button to close the electric door behind her. Still shaking, she walked inside and paused to listen. It was quiet. She didn’t hear men’s voices and Dani wasn’t blasting loud music. Knowing her sister, she was probably using earbuds and destroying her hearing instead.

Hadley rushed through the hall and into the kitchen to find her father pacing back and forth across the small area. “Dad? What did you do?”

“Hadley!” He spun around, his dark hair, newly threaded with gray, an unruly mess. He made it worse when he ran his hand through the too-long strands. His face was drawn and pale, the lines around his eyes and mouth more pronounced. “I’ve been waiting for you to get home from work.”
It was just supposed to be a fling.

Now she’s having his baby.

Winter Capwell knows all about billionaire Harrison Dare’s bad-boy reputation.

His all-pleasure, no-commitment rule worked well for her, too. Until fate changed everything.

Harrison never wanted a wife or kids. His incredibly large family provides all the siblings and children he needs. Besides, no woman has ever tempted him to give up his bachelor lifestyle.

Until the mysterious and sexy Winter entered his life.

But when someone comes after the woman he loves, he will stop at nothing to protect her and make her his. For good.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Winter Capwell stepped into the penthouse, where she was meeting with Nikki and Derek Bettencourt, her heart pounding hard in her chest. She was about to reveal a secret she’d been keeping since she moved into Nikki’s building. Now it was time to come clean, and Winter was nervous as hell.

Asher Dare, Nikki’s fiancé, opened the door to the apartment he and Nikki shared, but Winter’s gaze went directly to the siblings waiting for her. Nikki, with her long, dark hair, and Derek, his hair a touch lighter, shared similar facial features. Including the green eyes that met Winter’s gaze, a hue so like her own.

“Hi, Winter. What’s going on?” Confusion etched Nikki’s face, along with concern.

Winter didn’t blame her. She and Nikki had spent a lot of time together after the former model had returned from Asher’s Eleuthera home, where she’d stayed after a devastating scandal. That had been where a twenty-one-year-old Nikki had coupled with Asher, the billionaire owner of Dirty Dare Spirits and the Meridian Hotels. But in all their time walking Winter and Nikki’s dogs, meeting for coffee, and getting to know each other, Winter had never hinted at hiding a secret. One that included Nikki and her brother, Derek.

Before Winter could answer, Asher spoke. “Winter asked to talk to you both privately, so I’m going to leave you alone. I’ll be in my office if you need me.”

“No, stay,” Winter said. If she’d learned anything about Nikki, the younger woman could handle Winter’s news but would want all the support she could get to process the information.

Nikki looked from her fiancé to her brother, who shrugged, obviously as lost as she was.

But Asher cut Winter a look that warned her if she hurt his fiancée, she’d answer to him. Nothing surprising there. It didn’t matter what Winter revealed, Asher would look out for Nikki, making it easy to see why she’d fallen for the brooding, protective man. Though Winter preferred his more light-hearted, sexy brother, Harrison. But now was not the time to think about her hot summer fling.

Asher rested his palm on Nikki’s back, and she leaned into him, proving Winter’s instinct correct in asking him not to leave.

“Let’s sit,” Asher suggested, for which Winter was grateful.

Her legs were trembling as much as her insides. He led them into the overly large family room, and they all chose their places, Asher and Nikki on one end of the soft, taupe-colored suede sofa, Derek in a black leather club chair.

Winter took the opposite end of the couch and tried to relax, but her leg bounced up and down, nerves consuming her.

“Okay, time to talk,” Derek said. “What’s happening here? Why did you need to see us?”

Nikki tilted her head. “Winter?” she asked, clearly wanting answers, too.

Winter swallowed hard and met their curious stares. “I wanted to tell you this a while ago, but first came your… scandal,” she said to Nikki, hating to bring up such a painful time. “And then the break with your parents. Then you and Asher got engaged, and I didn’t want to ruin your happiness. There was never a good time.”

Placing a hand over her stomach, Nikki drew a deep breath. “We’ve grown close, Winter. The fact that you’re a reporter made me uneasy at first, but you promised me you had no interest in me or my family as interview subjects.”

“And I don’t,” Winter rushed to reassure her. “But I do have another kind of interest.” She glanced down at her manicured nails, studying them instead of facing the duo just yet. “I’m just going to lay out the truth, but bear with me while I explain.” She rubbed her hands on her black leggings, gathering her courage. “Here goes. I moved into your building on purpose so I could meet and get to know you.”

“What the fuck?” Derek exploded, protective of his younger sister.

“You’d better keep going with the explanation,” Asher said, his jaw clenched tight, his hands clasped around Nikki’s.

God, Winter almost wished she had someone who cared enough to bolster her now. But that wasn’t the life she’d been given, and despite this news, it had been a good one so far.

“I was raised by my mother. No father in the picture. My mom always told me she didn’t know who he was, and because we were such a tight unit, I let it go. Mom was independent, and I was okay not knowing. Then…” She pulled in a much-needed breath. “About a year ago, Mom was diagnosed with cancer. Shortly before she died, she told me who my father was.”

It wasn’t easy to speak over the lump that rose in her throat whenever she talked or thought about her mother. They’d been so close, and the loss had been, and still was, devastating.

They sat in wary silence, waiting for Winter to continue.
Time zones, show times, and the demands of his career have made married life harder than expected. Even knowing the rock star life wouldn’t make their relationship easy.

Cassidy Kingston thought she was ready to handle being married to a man idolized by women everywhere. She believes in their love even though the separations when the band is on tour can be torture. But the paparazzi and media don’t make their time apart easier and the gossip headlines hit her harder than they should. She trusts her husband even if she misses him like crazy.

When rumors surface that Dash is seeing someone, what’s a girl to do? Surprise her husband and remind him of what he’s been missing. Except you know what they say about the best laid plans.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Read Just One Spark for Dash and Cassidy’s full story.

Note: This stand-alone short story takes place nine months before Just One Dare and four years after earlier Kingston stories.

“Once again, Dash Kingston has been photographed out with Peyton Jones, the twenty-two-year-old singer and opening act for his band, the Original Kings. The Kings are currently finishing up the final leg of their US tour on the West Coast, and it looks like their lead singer is taking full advantage of being away from home.”

Cassidy Kingston glared at the television in the break room of K-Talent Productions’ New York City offices. Someone had left the TV on, the channel showing CGC. Celebrity Gossip Central was currently focusing on Cassidy’s husband and whatever dirt they could make up about him based on no evidence and innocent interactions.

She placed her laptop down on the table just as the well-known host of the show continued to talk. “What does Dash’s producer wife, Cassidy Kingston, think of all the intimate time the two stars are spending together, heads bent in deep conversation?”

“She thinks you’re full of crap,” Cassidy muttered.

“Or has Dash already broken up with his wife so he feels comfortable moving on in public?”

Despite knowing better, she glanced at the screen in time to see Dash, so sexy with his inky-black hair long and falling over his face, as he leaned close to Peyton. The young, dark-haired rock star was beautiful, a pink stripe on one side of her hair only adding to her funky appeal. Cassidy’s stomach twisted in agony at the sight.

“Shut this off now.” Cassidy’s sister-in-law picked up the remote and clicked off the television.

The silence was a blessing. “I didn’t hear you come into the room,” Cassidy muttered.

“Because you’re too busy watching trash TV.” Sasha, her dirty-blonde hair tied into a messy bun, glared at the now blank screen.

Cassidy couldn’t argue the point made by the woman who wasn’t just Cassidy’s sister-in-law. She was also Cassidy’s former roommate, the world-famous actress who’d given Cassidy her start in Hollywood as her personal assistant, her boss since Cassidy had begun work for K-Talent, and her best friend. It was the best friend role Cassidy valued most.

“Please don’t tell me you believe a word they’re saying.” Sasha closed the break room door, giving them privacy.

Cassidy shook her head. “No, of course not. But hearing the rumors and seeing the photos when Dash and I can barely connect for more than five minutes at a time makes the innuendo really hard to ignore.” The time difference between the East Coast, where she was, and the West Coast, where his shows were, had made their availability to talk difficult to say the least.

Cassidy pulled out one of the comfortable chairs around the table and settled in to talk to her friend.

Squeezing her shoulder in commiseration, Sasha sat down beside her. “How are things when you do speak?”

Cassidy shrugged. “Rushed. We don’t have enough time to catch up let alone bond on any emotional level. It’s like two friends saying a quick hi before one or the other is called away.” She blinked back unnecessary tears, born more of frustration than fear.

She missed her husband. They’d had so much time together before the band went on tour, the six-month separation had been more of a shock than she’d anticipated.

“Look, I get why the gossips are talking. I knew who and what Dash was when I married him.” After all, he’d all but ghosted her after a one-night stand, and the next time Cassidy had seen him, he’d been dealing with a potential, thankfully mistaken, paternity scandal. “But he changed.” Even if the media and tabloids tried to make the world believe otherwise.

Sasha nodded, her blue eyes firm in her agreement. “He did. He changed for himself and for you. So hang on to that belief in him.” Reaching over, Sasha squeezed her hand. “I know better than most how damaging it can be to let yourself believe what you see or hear. Unless it’s from your husband himself, I wouldn’t put too much stock in it.”

Cassidy nodded, aware Sasha and Xander had broken up for a long time when he believed he couldn’t trust her. As an A-list actress who’d risen to sudden fame, she’d been subjected to the same scrutiny Dash was now under while on tour. Thankfully, Sasha and Xander had had their second chance and were now happily married and working together at K-Talent. In addition to being a screenwriter, Xander was also a best-selling thriller author.

“Good advice as always,” Cassidy said, doing her best to pull herself together and trust what she knew.

In the years she and Dash had been together, she didn’t believe he’d ever cheated. Not in their early days, when they were living near each other in the Hamptons, and not now, when he was away on tour.
One grumpy billionaire.

One sassy-sweet supermodel.

Add in a tropical private island paradise.

What could go wrong?

As owner and CEO of Dirty Dare Spirits, thirty-three year old, Asher Dare has it all. Money. Power. Women whenever he wants. A private island retreat when he doesn’t. People he trusts? He can count those on one hand. When one of his best friends asks a favor—hide his twenty-one year old, supermodel sister, on the island until a scandal blows over—Asher can’t say no. But he doesn’t have to like it.

The daughter of a Senator and a Presidential candidate, Nicolette Bettencourt always acts with decorum. Yet through no fault of her own, scandal seems to follow her every move. When nude photos surface, the uproar puts her father’s campaign at risk. And forces her into hiding with Asher, the hottest—and grumpiest—billionaire she’s ever met.

Under soothing tropical breezes, Asher discovers that Nicolette is nothing like the spoiled brat portrayed in the tabloids. She’s warm, sexy, and a temptation Asher must resist at all costs—or he risks betraying his closest friend, bringing a powerful political dynasty to its knees… and losing the woman he loves.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Nicolette Bettencourt woke up and reached for her cell phone. She set the ringer and notifications on silent at night and checked her email and texts first thing in the morning. As soon as she turned on her phone, the messages and notifications popped up so fast she couldn’t keep up.

She pushed herself up and focused on a message from her modeling agent, Amelia Mitchell: Open this and call me immediately. You’re all over the internet.

Nikki looked at the link to the biggest tabloid site, one known for breaking the hottest stories in celebrity and entertainment news, and her stomach pitched. Whatever it was, it couldn’t be good.

She clicked and studied the photo on the screen, trying to process what she saw. It was her bedroom, with the familiar chandelier hanging from the ceiling, the twin floral framed photos on the wall above the headboard, and the domed smart light on the right nightstand because Nikki found it difficult to wake up on workdays. What the hell?

Her pale pink duvet lay rumpled on one side of the bed, and then she took in the part she’d avoided looking at until now, the female lying asleep on the other side. Nikki tried but found it impossible to swallow. Heart pounding, she enlarged the picture, even though she already knew. She was the girl naked in bed, her ass exposed for the world to see. But how?

Nauseous, she scrolled lower only to find another photo of herself, her hair pulled up into a messy bun, her face visible as she slept on her back. Censorship bars covered her private parts but she was naked nonetheless. Shame washed over her and she started to tremble.

How had someone taken photos of her in her own home? Tears filled her eyes, and she glanced down at her nude body—because that’s how she slept… when she slept—and freaked out. She jumped out of bed, grabbed the silk robe slung over the footboard, and wrapped the material around herself, shaking as she tied the sash tight around her waist.

She felt exposed, violated, and utterly petrified.

She wasn’t ready to talk to her agent or anyone else for that matter. She scrolled through her phone, seeing her mother had called no less than a dozen times. Her parents would be furious, worried about how this would impact her senator father’s potential presidential campaign.

Any other twenty-one-year-old girl would call a friend, but Nikki didn’t have anyone she trusted completely. The closest person to her was Megan Cologne, another model. But Meg wasn’t the warm-fuzzy type, and Nikki needed someone to comfort her, not gloat. Meg was the gloating type.

Her doorbell rang and she froze. She couldn’t face anyone. Not now. Then she remembered the doorman would only let a select few people come up without calling. People she could handle seeing.

Pulling her robe tighter, she walked into the main area of her apartment and tiptoed to the door.

Someone banged again and rang the bell. “Come on, Nikki. Let me in.”

She let out a breath of relief and opened the door. “Derek!” She fell into her big brother’s arms, not bothering to hold back choking sobs.

“Come on.” He wrapped an arm around her and walked them inside, shutting the door and locking it behind them. “I don’t have to ask if you’re okay but how did this happen? How were pictures like that taken and exposed?”

She pushed herself out of his embrace. “I don’t know, okay? I admit I sleep naked but nobody’s been here!”

“No guys? Boyfriends or otherwise?” he asked.

She shook her head. “Not since Lance Freeman. That was six months ago.” Her ex-boyfriend was a photographer she’d met through her modeling career.
Jade Dare has done everything in her power to overcome her mother’s unstable influence. Changed her name. Became a success. Vowed never to risk passing on the potential for inherited pain. What has it gotten her? One fiancé who wanted her for money. A second who cheated on her with his brother’s wife.
Knox Sinclair always suspected he liked his brother’s fiancé a little too much, that’s why he kept his hands to himself. But with ties broken and Jade all too willing, a one-night stand with a side of payback sounds like a damned good idea.
After finding a spot, he cut the engine and turned to his newly engaged stepsister, Holly, who was sitting in the passenger seat, her body vibrating with excitement. She couldn’t wait to get in there… unlike Knox, who avoided anything wedding related ever since his marriage had imploded more than a year ago.

Was he over his ex? Yes. Did he carry a grudge against his cheating former wife and disloyal stepbrother? Also, yes. Any rational man would.

“Ready?” he asked Holly.

Her brown eyes lit up, making Knox’s feelings about the Bridal and Wedding Expo irrelevant. To Holly, this was important. And he would be there for her.

“Beyond ready! I can’t wait to check out all the booths,” she said. “How awesome is this going to be?”

He held back a sarcastic reply because he loved his younger sister. “Too bad Miles isn’t here to walk you around,” he said of her future groom, a mergers and acquisitions attorney who was currently on a business trip.

Reaching over, Holly patted Knox’s cheek. “Good thing you love me and are willing to take his place. Come on. It’s going to be fun!” Holly unhooked her seat belt and opened her car door, turning to face him before letting herself out. “Besides, you know you’d do anything for me. I’m the baby of the family.”

He rolled his eyes. “Someday that reasoning is going to wear thin,” he said, chuckling. But she was right.

He’d adored Holly the day he’d first met her. Knox and his father had opened their home to a four-year-old Holly, her thirteen-year-old brother, Theo, and their mother, Knox’s father’s new wife, Addison. Holly had been adorable and exuberant, and she’d latched onto Knox immediately.

She’d been in need of an older brother, and even at fourteen years old, Knox had patience where Theo had had none. The selfish bastard still rarely bothered with his sister. Then again, it seemed as if the only person he cared about was himself.

“No, it won’t.” She grinned and hooked her arm in his.

He resisted the urge to rub the top of her head, the way he used to do when they were kids, knowing she’d be annoyed if he messed up her hair.

Their parents had separated when Holly was eighteen and in college. Knox’s dad had died shortly after the divorce was finalized, leaving everything to Knox, including the football team he owned. The New York Warriors were in Knox’s blood. And Holly was his family. Knox had taken it on himself to support his sister, whose mother had disappeared to Palm Springs with yet another wealthy man and her father had passed away. Today was her day. Knox was just happily paying for whatever choices she made.

“Let’s go.” She started toward the building, and he matched her shorter strides. When they reached the doors, he opened one for Holly and allowed her to precede him. Then, together, they walked inside, and the cool air-conditioned lobby shocked him into paying attention.
She barely recognized the woman staring back at her. Six years ago, she’d been pregnant and homeless, with no idea what the next day would bring.

Now she was wearing a sleeveless, cream-colored, satin gown with a strapless neckline, draped corset bodice, and an actual train, sent over by the designer, himself. A limousine waited outside to take her to Lincoln Center for a movie premiere. Aurora had curled her hair in long waves and applied makeup, doing her best to look as glamorous as possible for her evening with famous stars the average person would never meet.

This was her life and there were moments, like now, when she still had to pinch herself to be sure she wasn’t dreaming.

“Mommy, look! I’m going with you to the party tonight!” Her five-year-old daughter Leah stomped into the room wearing a pink, sparkly princess gown from her dress-up box, with matching shoes that were too big for her little feet and a handbag dangling from her arm. “Makeup please!” Leah closed her eyes and puckered her lips, making her I’m ready face.

Aurora laughed. Her daughter was such a little diva, she thought, as she picked up the tube of gloss and swiped it over Leah’s tiny pursed lips. “All set. You look beautiful!”

“I know!” Leah said with confidence that never ceased to amaze her. “So do you, Mommy.”

“Thank you, honey.” Smiling, Aurora reached out and tugged on Leah’s long blonde hair that was still damp from her bath. It curled around her adorable face.

Aurora saw her own features in her daughter’s smaller ones but she also caught glimpses of Leah’s father in her child, at least, in the unique indigo color of his eyes.

It had been a sizzling Florida summer. Nick had been visiting a friend who lived in Miami Beach. It had been the same day Aurora had turned eighteen and aged out of foster care. She’d had nowhere to go except the diner where she worked and had been lucky the owners had allowed her to stay in the back room.

While serving tables that afternoon, she’d met Nick-they’d exchanged first names only–and they had spent one night together. It had been incredible…and enough to result in her getting pregnant. But at the time? The hours she’d spent with Nick on the beach and later in his hotel room had been an unexpected, and pleasurable, escape from the painful reality of her life.

As usual, when she thought of her daughter’s father, a pang of regret hit her hard. Without Nick’s last name, she’d had no way to find him once she’d discovered she was pregnant. Although Leah would never know her daddy, Aurora consoled herself with the fact that her daughter had uncles who would stand in as father figures and male role models.

Men she’d never have met, if her oldest half-brother, Linc, hadn’t managed to uncover her existence after their father, the bastard, had passed away. When going through his father’s things, Linc had discovered checks that Kenneth Kingston had sent as payment to keep Aurora out of his life and in foster care.

Linc had then traveled to Florida, where Aurora had grown up, welcomed her into the family, and remained in town long enough to get to know her. And he’d allowed her the time to decide if she wanted to move to New York and be part of their clan.

Leah slid her hand into Aurora’s. “Let’s go to the ball!” she cried out in a high-pitched voice, pulling Aurora out of her musings about the past, and things she couldn’t change.

“Honey, you know Samantha is babysitting tonight.”

The girl was a high-school senior who lived in the neighborhood and occasionally watched Leah so Aurora could get work done.

“I know,” Leah said with a dramatic sigh. She released Aurora’s hand, stepped out of the bathroom and began to spin around the bedroom. “But I’d rather meet my handsome prince tonight. Are you going to meet your handsome prince at the ball, Mommy?” Ever since they’d watched Cinderella, Leah had been obsessed with the idea of finding her prince.

She kept spinning, saving Aurora from having to answer. There hadn’t been any princes in her life—handsome or otherwise—since the night she’d gotten pregnant.

Aurora watched as Leah pretended to dance across the ballroom floor. Samantha was going to have a rough time getting Leah to sleep unless she put on a quiet movie to chill her out first. She twirled around, nearly missing the dresser as she spun.

“Stop before you get dizzy or trip!” Aurora said, too late.

Thanks to her play shoes, Leah’s feet got tangled and she ended in a heap on the floor, giggling.

Aurora sighed. “Come on. Up you go.” She helped her daughter stand. “Time to go downstairs and wait for your sitter.”
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Carly Phillips returns to her sexy Kingston—Dare world of rich billionaire heroes in her new Kingston Family series.
He was her first love. She was his. They broke up to follow their dreams. Axel Forrester became a world famous drummer. Tara Stillman became a veterinarian.
Years later, he’s scrolling social media and sees they’re both in East Hampton, NY. Fate? Or Coincidence?
What’s a rockstar to do other than borrow his friend’s dog as an excuse to see the good doctor. And—show up at her office after all this time.
Axel wants a second chance with the one who got away. He’s not going to let Tara go this time.
**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

I begin a new

one... like the one that you, dear reader, have before

you now.

Chapter One

Axel Forrester adjusted his sunglasses and leaned back against a lounge chair, grateful for the first warm, summerlike day in June in the Hamptons. Xander Kingston’s dog, Bella, sat by his side.

An extra pair of glasses lay on the table beside him. He picked them up and propped them over the golden retriever’s eyes. “There you go, girl. That’s better, isn’t it?” He patted her on the head, and she stretched out on the ground, leaving the glasses in place.

He tipped his head up to the sky and closed his eyes, enjoying the heat on his face. As a California kid, his first winter in New York had been a huge adjustment. He’d moved here last summer when he’d become the drummer for the Original Kings and had spent the first couple of months bunking at the lead singer Dash Kingston’s house.

Axel learned fast that the band was a tight-knit bunch, all living in Dash’s home. Until a baby scare with a groupie put Dash in need of a fake girlfriend to fix his reputation, and Axel’s sister, Cassidy, had played the role.

Now Cassidy and Dash were married, having wed in front of family and friends this past winter. Axel had rented a house nearby, as had Jagger, the guitar player, and Mac, the bassist. But Axel and the guys spent more time at Dash’s home studio or here at Xander’s than at their own places.

Xander complained about the fact that the band had followed Dash’s lead, making his house their home away from home, but nobody believed Xander really considered them unwanted company. And Sasha, the famous actress Xander had married this past spring, welcomed them, as long as they knocked first.

Given the Kingston family’s dysfunctional background, courtesy of their now deceased father, the fact that four of the five siblings were settled and happy gave a guy like Axel hope that he’d meet the right woman. He was sick of the rock-star lifestyle, the parties after the shows, the groupies, and the drinking. At thirty years old, he wanted a partner for life.

And if he couldn’t find the right woman?

He opened his eyes and glanced down at the dog that didn’t belong to him, giving her a long rub down her spine. “We all know the truth. You’re my girl, Bella, right?”

She lifted her head at the sound of her name.

“Quit trying to steal my dog’s loyalty.” Xander walked out of his house and joined him on the lounge chair beside him. “Why is she wearing my sunglasses?” he asked.

Axel figured the answer was obvious. “Because it’s sunny out and I’m protecting her eyes.”

“Know where she wouldn’t be squinting? Inside. Because when I’m not home, that’s where she belongs.”

Xander gestured toward the house, and Axel shrugged. “Sasha let me in and said I could relax by the pool, and you know Bella loves being with me.”

Xander rolled his eyes. “When you finally buy a house, make sure you have your own pool, okay?”
He’s a playboy rock star living the rock and roll dream...
Until a very real baby scare threatens to bring it all crashing down.

Dash Kingston has learned his lesson and knows his hard-partying lifestyle needs to change. To clean up his playboy image, he needs a fake girlfriend.

There’s just one problem: the perfect woman for the job is a gorgeous blonde who once aroused not just his body but his emotions, sending him running. And leaving her to wake up alone.

For the band’s sake, Cassidy Forrester agrees to play the girlfriend role, but she’s not going to fall for Dash’s charm or sex appeal ever again.

Except this Dash Kingston swears he’s a changed man, and he’s out to win Cassidy over - for good. But only a fool would make the same mistake twice, and Cassidy refuses to let their spark burn her a second time.
He’d had women at his beck and call. More money than he’d ever dreamed of earning doing something he loved. Bandmates who were his best friends, and success beyond his wildest dreams. He still had those things, but he also had a huge weight sitting on his chest in the form of an outstanding paternity test, courtesy of one night with a woman he barely remembered and whose name he hadn’t known at the time.

Word had spread over social media, television entertainment and celebrity news, and whatever magazines still showed up in grocery store checkout lines. Instead of talk about the band’s music and their new drummer, Axel Forrester, there was speculation about whether the Original Kings’ lead singer had impregnated a one-night stand.

Talk about a wake-up call.

Dash glanced around his patio, where clusters of people gathered talking. The professionals stood on one side, the roadies and groupies, the women who wanted to fuck a rock star, laughed and partied on the other. His band members were scattered around, all having fun on a hot late-September day in East Hampton, with the alcohol at Dash’s expense.

Whose idea was a party when his entire world might be falling apart? He ran a hand through his hair and decided to head over to his brother Xander’s house, about a mile down the road. Though he could walk, he took his baby, a Ferrari Limited-Edition V12 supercar. Not even the power of the engine or the yellow racing stripe he loved helped his mood.

On the short ride, he thought about the many mistakes he’d made in life and decided he could do better. And though he knew, if the kid was his, he’d step up, he prayed to God he’d dodge this bullet. Panic-induced sweat broke out on his skin, and he pumped up the air conditioner.

When he arrived at Xander’s, his other brother Linc’s car sat in the driveway. So he’d have both brothers to hang out with. Dash let himself inside and heard their voices coming from the kitchen.

He walked into the huge room where Linc and Xander were sitting at the table. “Hey.”

They looked up when he entered. “How are you holding up?” Linc asked.

Dash strode to the refrigerator, opened the door, and took out a can of Diet Coke. “Feeling like shit.” He popped the top and guzzled a long sip.

“How long until you have news?” Xander asked.

“My lawyer should call me any minute. Hour. Day. Fuck!” He raised a hand and caught himself, not wanting to hit anything in his brother’s kitchen. Or break his hand on the granite countertop.

Xander and Linc exchanged knowing looks.

“Come on. Sit.” Xander strode over, hooked an arm around Dash’s neck, and pulled him toward the chairs by the table. Releasing him, which Dash appreciated because he was choking, Xander then braced both palms on his shoulders and pushed until Dash dropped into the chair.

“Look, I’d be as crazy as you are if it was happening to me, but right now the best thing you can do is calm the fuck down,” Xander said.

“I know.” And he did but was it possible? Hell no.

Linc shook his head. “I hope this goes without saying, but once you survive this scare, things need to change.”

Dash did his best not to scowl or punch his brother for thinking now was a good time for life lectures.

“Linc, chill, yeah?” Xander gave Linc a pointed look.

“I’m just looking out for him,” Linc said, leaning back in his chair, always the composed brother.

“I know you are.” Dash got where Linc was coming from. He’d also noticed Linc had said when Dash survived this scare. Not if. Which meant his oldest sibling had faith Dash might get through this unscathed. Not be a father. Dash just hoped Linc was right.

Since their dead father hadn’t been a good parent, Linc had always felt the need to herd the rest of the siblings and make sure they were taken care of. Whether they needed his guidance or not. Dash didn’t blame him. Hell, he appreciated his oldest brother. He just wasn’t in the mood for a lecture.

He was damned lucky the woman in question was willing to do a noninvasive DNA test. A blood sample from Mom, one from Dad, and a fetal cell analysis would provide a result that was ninety-nine percent accurate. The fact that the chick was willing to do one told Dash she wasn’t a money-hungry gold-digger.

If he’d knocked her up, he wouldn’t marry her, but she and the baby wouldn’t want for a damned thing, and Dash would get to know his kid. His stomach cramped at the notion of having a baby with a stranger.

“Are the guys at your place?” Xander asked.

The question shook Dash from his disturbing thoughts. “They were out by the pool when I left.”
