No one knows what this young man whose life was marked even before birth would do to survive. And when they finally do, it’s usually too late. I didn’t show any interest or even let on that I could hear the questions being thrown at Ricci in harsh whispers, and of course, I turned a blind eye to the stares of disbelief. Believe it or not, Alonzo wasn’t my first target of the night, no. A fish rots from the head, sure, but in this case, I want that head to watch as everything around him crumbles while he lives in fear of what comes next.

While at Sal’s side, I kept my face neutral and only spoke when spoken to, though I kept target number one in my peripheral at all times. I know she must be dying inside, and I’m pretty sure she’s anxious as hell to get Alonzo alone. The eight suspects kept giving each other looks from across the room while trying not to appear guilty or afraid. I didn’t know Sal was going to drop Ma’s name like that, in essence letting his son know with that look that he knew what he’d done without saying a word.

But the others knew the ones who were there, and I was in no hurry to put their minds at ease. After all the introductions were made, Sal went on a bragging spree, telling his old cohorts all about his newly found grandson and brandishing all my achievements, or at least the ones I’d shared with him, which were nowhere near all of it.

I’d built myself a new identity, if you will, adding just enough information to sell myself, but not enough to put anyone here on edge. He knew about my excellence in education and the fact that I have a black belt, but there’s been no mention of the fact that I’m a level ten or that I’ve never had anything below a five point zero since I first entered a classroom.

That was enough to make Sal proud and see my potential compared to the others around him. By the time these people leave here tonight, my name will be on everyone’s lips, I’m sure. There was no one here younger than eighteen, so the kids were not in attendance, but I knew they were with friends and would be back in the morning; something else I learned from listening in.

Alonzo looked the most uncomfortable of all, as he should, but by the time the party drew to a close, they’d all been put at ease because neither Sal nor I made mention of anything. The fact that I was able to smile probably gave them the sense that I knew nothing, though how they would explain me being here is anybody’s guess.

I gravitated to Martin, who was the only one here other than Sal that I had any interest in talking to. “You’re my nephew; I have an American nephew. I knew your mother, but I did not know that she and Alonzo….” He let his words drift off while giving me a quizzical look.

“I think you should let Sal tell you about that; this is neither the time nor the place.”

His face changed immediately, almost as I knew it would but wasn’t sure. I know that one of the reasons Martin stays away from home is because he detests his brother and his doings and does not want to be associated with him. Now he glared across the room with disgust at his brother, who was busy arguing with his wife while trying to make it look like they were having nothing more than a discussion.

As for Felice, I’d decided to go after her first. After all, she’s the one who’d facilitated the happenings of that night by bringing my mother to her attacker. The fact that she’d gone on to marry him not long after tells me that that was the prize she’d won. Now her kids were an extension of that. I’d made up my mind not to harm them, not unless they gave me reason to. So far, they’ve just been like any other almost adult, getting up to the same Hijinx, though the son was skating pretty close to the line.

I know her game too. Though she did lust after Alonzo all those years ago, and I say lust, because who can love that? She’d also wanted the prestige of the palazzo and the family name that was greater than hers. She’d popped out those kids in quick succession, too, because I guess every female lives by their own Art of War that’s written in their DNA.

Get the ring and secure the future with a kid or two, so even if things go south, that alimony and child support will be a nice little cushion. Too bad she’s not going to live long enough to enjoy any of it. She’s a beautiful woman, vain and cold as the reptile she is, but she’s no match for Ma; Ma quite frankly outshines all of them, including the nun.
His wracking sobs of lament were just the beginning as far as I’m concerned and not a reason for me to ease up on him or show compassion. There are just some things in life that shouldn’t be so easily excused, forgiven, yes, but swept under the rug, hell no.

His daughter has been living with the repercussions of his actions for more than a decade. She’s almost an adult now, almost able to stand on her own two feet, at least that’s my hope, so it’s too late for him to pull his head out of his ass and get his shit together. I’m going hard on him with no letup because I dread what would happen, could happen if I leave him in her life.

There’s no guarantee that he won’t mess up again. It’s taking him this long, with all the evidence thrown at him, to come to terms with the truth. What could be his reason for not wanting to believe his own daughter and the things he’d seen firsthand? It can only be one of two things, either his ego won’t let him accept that he’d been wrong all along, or he’s afraid to face the truth.

Both those things are the products of a weak mind. If he can’t love her enough to put her first, then there’s no need for him in her life. I know part of my reasoning is selfish and self-centered. I want her to become strong, independent, and able to stand on her own two feet. But I also have the need to eliminate her enemies before I can safely go on with my plans without worrying about her future.

I slipped away to visit the grandparents under the guise of playing a game of chess with gramps before leaving for the trip, but in truth, I had way more important things to discuss once I got there. It had been tricky at first, letting someone else in on what I had planned. I had to because I admit I needed help, and other than Pop, I could only find it here.

No one would suspect, least of all Pop, that I would take such a chance. But herein lies the other reason I have to put space between Gianna and me. I’m not the boy she thinks she met. I’m not nice, not sweet, well I have been, with her. What I am is a calculating bastard who’d do whatever it takes to get the result I want.

I have a code of ethics that I live by, true, but if you cross me, there’s no length I won’t go to to end you. I dabble in things the world would shudder at, my computer is my weapon of choice for now, and I use it, along with others like me, to find and destroy those who prey on the weak with my mother’s past as the driving force that pushes me to go where most would falter.

I’ve sent men to jail after exposing their dark secrets, brought corporations down for using human beings like chattel; these are the kinds of things I do in my spare time. My heart, the one she’s been flitting around these last few weeks, has been dead or just about for a very long time.

But the kicker to all this is that I’m the one who thinks she deserves better. I want more for her, even though it kills me to think of her life with someone else. But I’ll be gone right, so… I rubbed my chest where it hurt and walked inside my grandparents’ home.

“I see you found a way to get yourself to Paris after all. Are you sure you want to go through with this? If Draco gets wind….”

“Yeah, I’m sure. This is just a preliminary visit, though, nothing to worry about. I think I finally found the one I’ve been searching for. I’ll start there.”

I held my breath waiting for the advice to put an end to things now. It always comes the closer I get to my goal, and I know it’s just that ingrained filial piety and the belief in protecting the women in the family that had got me this far with my need for help.

It hadn’t been easy in the beginning; there’d been a lot of questions. I’d had to share part of Ma’s story, which hadn’t been the easiest thing, but my calculating mind knew that it was the quickest way to cut through the noes I was sure to get. It had worked too. I might be good with a computer, but knowing people in the know had been more useful at this point in the game, and that’s where I’d needed help.
Lance took a step forward, but Pop stopped him with a hand on his shoulder, pulling him back.

“We’re right here, son; you go ahead.”

The gate slid open, and I stepped out to see the car parked there. I’ll give him this; he looked genuinely worried. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, wanted to believe that everything that had happened to her had gone over his head and that he wasn’t a willing participant, but I can’t overlook the fact that that shit did happen on his watch.

Whitewashing his part in her unjust treatment at the hands of the woman he himself had brought into her life would just be another slap in her face. I’d just be one more person who didn’t take her feelings and wellbeing into consideration, and that’s not about to happen.

I’d seen firsthand what a little bit of love and attention could do for the girl, and it certainly wasn’t too much to ask from the father who was supposed to cherish and protect her. I have a real hard time understanding how anyone, including a grown-ass man who should know better, her blood no less, could be too dense to see what was right beneath his nose.

Gianna, for all her shyness, blossoms with just the slightest of encouragements, something that was sorely lacking in her home but something that all growing things need. By the time I took two steps towards him, I was no longer in a giving mood. The only person who needed any show of my kindness was her. He can go fu… better yet, he could go off himself for all I care.

With my mind made up, I approached the car as he got out and came towards me. “Where’s my daughter? Where are you hiding her?”

“Keep your voice down.” I waited for him to calm down before answering him. “Before I answer that, let me ask you a question. Did your kid call you all weekend? Did you call her? Did you even have a way of getting in touch with her?”

My questions seemed to stump him, which only pissed me off even further. These are basic questions any decent man with a teenage daughter would have the answers to right off the bat, the fact that he didn’t make me both sad and furious. “Do you know how appalling you are?”

“I knew she went to New York with your family; of course, I know where she was.”

“It’s not the same. Your daughter went out of state with relative strangers and didn’t call you once to check in. She didn’t mention you even once in the time she was gone, and when she landed back here, instead of joy at seeing her only remaining parent, she looked forlorn, like she was dreading what awaited her here.” I’m sure she has no idea that I can read her so well that I’d seen and felt the change in her.

It was that sadness that had made my decision that much easier. “Look, I don’t know what you think you know about my family, but you’re wrong. Either way, this has nothing to do with you. Now bring my daughter out here, she has school tomorrow, and it’s getting late.”

“I guess I didn’t make myself clear the first time. Until I know what part you played in the shit that’s been happening to her, you won’t be allowed around her. Push me on this, and it will be a long time before you see her again. Even now, you’re not thinking about her but about what you want. Is she even human to you?”

I’m trying for her sake to give this guy a chance. I know as pissed off as I am, he’s still her dad, and with her being who she is, she’d want that. But he’s either very obtuse or just downright stupid, neither of which are any use to her right now, not with those two he has living in his house.

“I’ll tell you what, go home, kick your wife and her rejected placenta out of your house, and I’ll think about letting Gianna come home.” He blustered and recoiled like my words were too harsh. “No? Okay, then there’s your answer; she’s not coming back any time soon. In about a week, I’ll ask her if she wants to see you and if the answer’s yes, you may come here. But if I find out that you knew about what those two were doing to her, you’re fucked.”

I didn’t have anything else to say, so I turned and walked back through the gates, hearing them close behind me as he stood there. Crap, he’d made me miss her meeting the ankle-biter for the first time. The phone and perfume wouldn’t be here until tomorrow sometime, and I still had the jewelry I’d bought her to give, so there was that.
A tattered coat stretched across his shoulders and barely held back the cold as he clutched at the lapels with arthritic fingers.

He knew he should’ve left the tavern for home hours ago, but the talk tonight had been such that gave a man new hope. Something that was rare and hard to come by in this time of uprisings and unrest.

The enemy had done their best to destroy his little piece of heaven in the Sicilian hills. All that was left were burnt-out buildings that didn’t hold up under the mortar attacks and a few that had refused to give up but were yet badly shaken.

He’d been one of the lucky few who hadn’t lost his home, though it wasn’t much these days. And if things kept up this way, he might have to leave the only home he’d ever known soon anyway.

That’s why tonight had been so refreshing. The news had warmed his heart, a band of men joining together in secret to take back the power that had been so ruthlessly wrested from their hands by men more crafty than they.

It had been a long time since Koza had been mentioned with such reverence in these parts. The once noble organization had taken a hit with the happenings in other parts of the world. Where men who knew nothing of valor and honor had taken up the mantle, only to tarnish and destroy its good name and what it truly stood for.

Something born out of necessity to combat injustice, a bond forged in steel among men who wanted better than the scraps from their master's table, scraps that had been stolen from them in the first place, whether by theft or other underhanded machinations.

In the beginning, Koza was something to be proud of, something kept in secret known only to those who made the oath in blood, but it had somehow become something else. There were whispers of the evils being done in the name of Koza all around the world.

They were long gone, the elders. Those men who had come together those many years ago. They were nothing more than the poor and needy; the broken and the downtrodden and out of despair had found a way to survive.

Their only aim back then was to right the wrongs done to them and theirs. To put food in their bellies and wipe away the tears from the eyes of their wives and stave off the fear of their children.

But greed can seep through the tiniest of cracks, and it was greed that led to the elimination of the once upstanding organization so that it had become what it is today. An organization of criminals and corruption, carried on by men who had no real association or even had the knowledge of what Koza truly is.

So for a time, the ways of the old guard had been lost, and the men who’d once found pride in what they’d made no longer wanted to be associated with this new Koza or its deeds. They put away old ideas and tried to find a place in this unjust world, where those who have kept their heels in the necks of those who don’t.

But now, after this latest disaster had struck and the people were wasted, almost half a century since the first meeting, the sons of the old guard were ready once again to fight for justice and equality.

There was a new light in the old man’s eyes tonight, something that had been missing for a very long time. A strange wind blew across his neck, and he looked to the sky. It was an omen that, and he shivered as he hurried his steps towards home.

He saw his door up ahead and hurried his pace. She’d be worried, no doubt, his little Sofia, the child of my old age. He smiled in the dark and shook his head, a man his age with a beautiful young daughter to raise. The village folk had had a mighty fine time at his expense when she was born.

His smile failed at the memory of the mother she’d lost and the wife that had been taken from him. Poor little mite, she never knew a mother’s love. But he, because of the great love he’d borne the mother, had cherished the child from the start.

“Sofe, little Sofia, where are you, child?” He didn’t see her laboring over the stove keeping his supper warm, as she was wont to do when he stayed out late. He didn’t think much of it; maybe she’d grown tired and gone off to bed.

It was then the smell of burnt food reached his nose. “What’s this?” He moved to the old wood-burning stove and removed the ruined pot. It wasn’t like his daughter to be this careless.
