Get painfully rejected by true mate. Check.
Join a website for shifters seeking an arranged mating. Check.
Schedule a meeting with a prospective match. Check.

Quinley Bevan doesn’t expect to get smacked in the face by intense sexual chemistry during the meeting, but Isaiah Hale—dark, masculine, rugged—sets off all her hormonal fireworks. More, as a dominant shifter, the enforcer pulls at her submissive nature and calls to her inner cat. Both his power and stabilizing strength are plain drugging.

Their agreement is pretty standard: If they don’t imprint on each other within two years, they’ll dissolve the mating. But with his cat holding back, danger lurking around corners, and her true mate making a reappearance, things might be more complicated than they bargained for.

When he first joined Find Your Match . com, Isaiah wasn’t confident he’d be paired with someone who truly fit him. But he feels a kinship with Quinley. The healer stirs up his protective instincts and ticks his every box. He always envisioned that he’d mate a fellow dominant, but this submissive healer pulls him in like no other.
Still, he doesn’t expect to feel possessive of her so fast—she’s a relative stranger. But as soon as he puts the claiming brand on her neck, everything in him screams Mine.

His cat, though, doesn’t view her as its mate. The animal is still angry at being unable to have the female it was predestined to claim. But when Quinley’s own fated mate comes sniffing around and she becomes a target of their enemies, the cat is finally in agreement with Isaiah on one vital thing: Quinley belongs to them now, and they’ll never let her go.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

Quinley, aged sixteen

There he is.

Her pulse racing with nerves, Quinley slipped out of the shadows at the side of the guest lodge. Zaire’s step faltered at the sight of her, and his brows briefly knitted. It sucked that her own mate looked at her with zero recognition despite her having been in his periphery for years.

Her Alpha male Harlan was close friends with Zaire’s father, Rodrick—an Alpha of another pride. Whenever Rodrick came to visit, he often brought his son along. And so Zaire had become friends with Harlan’s children.

Quinley’s pride was huge, as was its territory. The more important you were to the Alphas, the further inland you were situated. Her family was unranked and lived near the border, so she didn’t move in the same social circles as the children of her Alpha pair, unlike Zaire. As such, she’d never had cause to officially meet him.

It was only two years ago, when he’d saved her from a tricky situation, that she’d been up close to him for the first time. As she’d looked directly into his eyes and taken his scent into her lungs, something deep and primitive had stirred inside both Quinley and her inner cat. They’d felt that he was theirs. When all he’d gifted her with was a blank, disinterested look, her stomach had roiled.

He doesn’t sense it, she’d thought back then. It had been clear that something was jamming the frequency of the true-mate bond on his end.

She’d raced back home and told her sisters what had happened. They’d advised her not to approach him about it, saying it was best to give him time to sense the truth for himself. So Quinley had done exactly that, trusting that he’d eventually come to realize they were predestined mates.

But … he so far hadn’t. Which was a special brand of torture. And after what she’d heard tonight, she couldn’t stay silent any longer. She’d otherwise risk losing him for good.

Zaire gave her a severe glare. “You shouldn’t be here.” It was spoken with the authority of someone who actually ruled her pride.

Bold.

“I wanted to talk to you.” She cleared her throat. “I’m Quinley, by the way.”

He didn’t react whatsoever. It was obvious that her name meant nothing to him and didn’t poke at his memories. Sweet.

“You once intervened when I was surrounded by a group of my peers,” she reminded him. Again, zero recognition. “In the woods,” she added, but the words garnered no reaction. “Like, two years ago.”

He continued to stare at her blankly.

Disappointment flooded her, but she flicked a blasé hand. “You don’t remember. It’s fine.” Lie.

He sighed. “What do you want?”

She blinked at his rude tone. Okay. It didn’t do much for her confidence, but she wasn’t going to make her excuses and leave. This was too important.

She pulled in a preparatory breath and drew herself up to her full height, which wasn’t anything close to tall. She parted her lips to speak, but the words got trapped in her throat. Say it. Just say it. “We’re mates,” she blurted out.

He stiffened from head to toe, his expression going tight. Not good. But still, there was relief in having finally spoken those words aloud. She’d held them in for what felt like way too long.

Zaire scratched his nape, looking uncomfortable. “Fuck,” he muttered beneath his breath.

“I wasn’t going to say anything. I was waiting for you to sense it for yourself. But you haven’t, and then tonight I heard … I heard that you and Nazra plan to mate one day and run this pride together.” Panic had squeezed her lungs so tight she’d struggled to breathe.

He dropped his arm back to his side. “Look—”

“I know there’s a good chance my Alpha will make you sign a mating agreement even now. You can’t, Zaire.”

It wouldn’t matter that he might not claim Nazra for many years to come. If he put his signature on those papers, it would be hard for him to back out without causing major insult to her Alphas—and it would break something in Quinley.

“You can’t sign yourself away like that,” she pressed. “I’m the one you’re supposed to claim.”

He pulled a face. “This is—”

“I’m no daughter of an Alpha, I’m not dominant, and my family as a whole is unranked, so mating me will get you nothing—I know that. But we’re fated, Zaire. That has to count for something.”

“It would. If we were. But we’re not.”

Her inner cat flinched, her shoulders hunching. “We are,” Quinley insisted, ignoring the pain that had lanced through her chest, cold and razor sharp.

He scrubbed a hand down his face. “Kid, I don’t want to upset—”

“I’m not a kid,” she bit off.

“You’re, like, thirteen or fourteen.”

His condescension was a slap. “I’m sixteen, two years younger than you. And I am right about this.”

Disbelief plastered over his face, he shook his head fast. “You don’t know what you’re saying.”
It has been said that Bailey Bryant lives with her middle finger up in the air. She can agree with that. But there’s one thing she fails to be breezy about: her unrelenting attraction to fellow enforcer Deke Hammond. Broad, inked, and ruggedly masculine, the grumpy cat shifter could attract a stone. He’s also currently riddled with touch-hunger and much crankier than usual. So she should probably stop poking at him for fun—he already despises her. Or so she thinks … until one of their regular disputes leads to an explosive kiss and an exchange of truths. That lip-lock creates a major issue—she now wants more. And there seems only one thing for it: She’ll have to kiss him again.
Deke is a man of logic. He doesn’t like what he doesn’t understand. And he cannot explain why Bailey compels him like no one else. Constantly teasing and provoking him, the snake shifter drives him nuts. Daily. On purpose. She takes nothing seriously—him included. Yet, he’s often come close to ravishing her mouth. When touch-hunger comes calling, he loses the strength and will to fight his attraction to her. The more time he spends with Bailey, the more he realizes he’s made many incorrect assumptions about her. There’s much he doesn’t know. Much to admire and respect. Much he truly likes. Likes a whole lot, in fact. And there seems only one thing for it: He’ll have to just keep her.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

CHAPTER ONE

“You need to get rid of them.”

Pausing with her spoon hovering above her cake, Bailey frowned at the brunette sitting opposite her. “What? Why?”

“They’re freaking out the rest of the pride.”

“How? It’s not like they’re bothering anybody.”

Havana shot her an impatient look. “Absolutely anyone would be bothered that snakes are nesting in their building.”

“They’re not nesting … as such,” fudged Bailey, holding her paper bowl closer to her chest. “They just want some company, so they come sleep at my apartment now and then.” She paused as a gaggle of squealing kids ran by, dragging party streamers through the air. “Is that so terrible?”

“Yes,” Havana insisted, plucking a spring roll from the paper plate on the table in front of her. “Because they go slithering through air vents and pay visits to the other residents.”

“They’re just being neighborly.”

“Bailey.”

Right then, the DJ on the stage spoke into the mic, and the song changed into something even more upbeat. Whistles of approval went up, and then more asses left seats as the number of dancers increased.

Pride events were often held here at the Tavern, their pride-owned local hangout. This evening, they were celebrating the sixtieth birthday of one of their submissives, Clarence. He seemed to be having an absolute blast—if he wasn’t dancing to the blaring music, he was singing on the karaoke. The songs were mostly hits from the 70s and 80s.

Slicing her plastic spoon into her cake, Bailey scooped up a chunk and shoveled it into her mouth. The tastes of frosting, jam, cream, and moist sponge burst on her tongue. Chewing, she glanced around to see that most of the partygoers who were not on the dancefloor had congregated into small groups that either sat at tables, stood around talking, or even played pool. Most of the kids had fled to the arcade area, but some were dashing around the place like their asses were on fire.

Bailey’s inner serpent wasn’t keen on all the noise. But though the venue was super loud, it was loud in a happy way. There was lots of laughter and singing and light-hearted chatter.

As always, the omegas had gone all out when it came to the decorations. Birthday banners were pinned above the bar and stage. String lights and lanterns hung on the brick walls, skirting the sports paraphernalia and widescreen TVs. A white and blue balloon arch was positioned near the buffet table. More white and blue balloons were tied to pretty weights and set on tables, along with confetti and LED candles.

One of the burgundy-cushioned booths was all but overflowing with various sized gifts covered in glossy wrapping paper. There was also a stack of envelopes and several gift bags.

“I’m serious, Bailey.” Havana bit into her spring roll. “I need you to get on top of the situation.”

“I can’t help it that full-blooded snakes are drawn to me. They’re drawn to all snake shifters.”

“I know that. But I also know that they’ll heed your mamba if she puts on a dominance display to scare them off. Have her get rid of them.”

“She doesn’t want to. They’re her friends.”

Havana fired an incredulous look Bailey’s way. “Her friends?”

“And they haven’t bitten anyone.” At least not yet.

“But they might, mightn’t they?”

Probably. “Of course not.”

Havana snorted, flicking her maple-brown hair over her shoulder. “Well, forgive me if I’m not confident of that. No, don’t argue, they need to go.”

“I can’t believe you want to isolate my snake from others.” Bailey sank her plastic spoon into her slice of cake extra hard. “Don’t you care that she gets lonely?”

Havana crossed her almond-shaped bluish-gray eyes and then bit into her spring roll again. “She does not get lonely. She prefers her own company. The only reason she likes being around others is that she finds humor in stirring the pot. As do you.”

So true.

“Your mamba urged them to take a hike last time. What’s the difference?”

“You were my roommate back then, and my snake is protective of you.” The devil shifter was not only Bailey’s Alpha female but her honorary sister. “I live alone now.”

“If you discount the numerous snakes nesting in your apartment, yes, you do.”

“I told you, they’re not nesting.” Per se.

Havana gave an impatient shake of the head. “Just get rid of them.”

“Fine. But my mamba is not happy about this.” Bailey scooped up more cake with her spoon and then shoved it into her mouth. “And I’m honestly pretty surprised that the pride went whining to you about it. The majority of them are pallas cats. Those things fear nothing.”

‘Undauntable’ was one of many descriptors that could be given to pallas cat shifters. They were as brash and bad-tempered as they were disturbingly vicious. The latter particularly applied to their inner animals.

The small, adorable fluffballs were pound for pound one of the strongest of the shifter breeds. More, they were so downright batshit they would attack with a feral, unchecked, demonic fury even if their enemies were stronger, bigger, and outnumbered them. Pallas cats either didn’t or couldn’t muster any fucks to give, which she could respect.
Blair Kendrick was just twelve-years-old when she stared into slate blue eyes and sensed that her world was about to change. She’d known down to her bones that the broody alpha cat shifter was her true mate. For the past six years, Luke has watched over and supported her. When she turns nineteen in a few months’ time, he’ll officially claim her and she’ll then join his pride. Or that’s the plan. Knowing her parents are extremely opposed to it, she isn’t surprised when her mother attempts to derail it. But the recent discovery on her porch comes as a shock, forcing Blair to face that she’s become the focus of a predator that lurks in the darkness and now intends to close in on her.

Not even the most ruthless of men are without a weakness. Luke Devereaux has only one: a fierce, lethal bush dog shifter who is also his mate. Before Blair, his mind was a place of endless blackness. She gave him purpose, peace, and balance. It’s finally nearing the time he can make her his, and he’s done playing nice with her interfering parents. But it turns out that they’re the least of his problems, because Luke isn’t the only one who has been watching and waiting for Blair to grow. There’s another who believes he has a claim to her. Someone who has so far kept to the shadows. Someone who is proving difficult to unmask. Someone who has already shown he’ll do anything to possess her. Even kill.

Halting, he half-turned. Slate-blue eyes fixed on her, hard and piercing. Eyes that were familiar to her. Yet not. Curiosity reared up inside her, as did her inner animal.

He squinted slightly, his shoulders stiffening. For a long moment, he simply stared at her, looking like he’d been poleaxed.

Finally, the tension seemed to seep from his body. He slowly came toward her, a brown paper bag held against his chest with one arm. Damn, he was huge. Even taller than her brother. He was also seriously good-looking. Like a movie star or something. And definitely a shifter—he didn’t walk, he flowed and glided, light-footed as a cat.

Maybe she should have felt a little nervous having this big, strange dude come toward her like this, but she didn’t. And she couldn’t explain why.

Stopping in front of Blair, he drew in a breath through his nose, taking in her scent. His own whispered over her. Cat shifter. He smelled like spicy clove and lime wood. That scent … it called to her. Made her feel safe and relaxed, like someone had just wrapped a soft, fleecy blanket around her.

Her inner animal rose with a happy whine. Usually, she didn’t like other breeds of shifter. But the little female wanted to bite the cat and snuggle up to him.

His head tipped to the side in curiosity, and warmth bled into his eyes. They weren’t hard now, but they were still piercing. He was totally focused on her. That was okay. She was just as focused on him.

This close to him, she could sense that he was a born alpha. A real powerful one. Dangerous, too. She wasn’t nervous, though. This man would never harm her; she knew that down to her bones. Because a knowing had hit her mere seconds ago—it came from nowhere, and there was no doubting the truth of it.

“Thank you,” he said, carefully taking the wallet from her, which he then stuffed into the back pocket of his jeans without moving his gaze from hers.

She liked his voice. It was soothing. Smooth and low and deep. “You’re welcome.”

“What’s your name?”

“Blair.”

“Blair,” he echoed, as if trying the name on for size or something. “I’m Luke.” He offered his hand.

She easily placed her palm in his. Obviously she didn’t usually talk to, let alone touch, complete strangers—she wasn’t stupid. But he wasn’t a stranger.

His hand enfolded hers, gentle and protective. “You know who I am to you, don’t you?” he asked, his tone calm and easy, but she sensed just how important her answer would be to him.

She nodded. He felt like, smelt like, hers. “We’re mates.”

The set of his shoulders lost more tension. “That’s right.”

Her animal yipped, delighted that he knew; delighted that he acknowledged both Blair and her inner female as his. “You’re a cat.”

“A pallas cat.” He released her hand. “And you’re a bush dog.”

She nodded again. “I heard pallas cats are crazy.” That was an understatement, really. In her mom’s words: “they’re demonic bantamweight minions of Satan.”

“But you don’t fear me, do you?”

She shook her head. “You wouldn’t hurt me. And if you tried, I’d bite your face off.”

Surprise flashed in his eyes, and then he chuckled. “You know something? I believe you.”

Just then, her brother sidled up to her, his chest all puffed up. “What’s going on over—” Mitch cut himself off as he got a good look at Luke. “Devereaux,” he greeted, the bluster leeching out of him. He curled his fingers around Blair’s upper arm and gently drew her to him. “What’re you doing with my sister?”

“Sister? Hmm.” Luke rubbed at his jaw. “Are your parents with you?”

“No,” he replied, his brow puckering. “Why?”

“Because I’d like to introduce myself to my mate’s parents and get a few things straight.”

“Your mate’s …” Mitch trailed off, doing a slow blink. He looked at her and then swore. “Are you sure?” he asked Luke.

“Never been more certain of anything.”

Mitch scrubbed a hand down his face. “Mom’s gonna freak.”

Yes, Noelle would. Bush dogs generally didn’t much like other breeds of shifter, let alone choose to mate with them. Also, ever since Blair’s older sister Marianna died a year ago, Noelle had been hyper-protective of Blair and tried holding her too close. Her mother wouldn’t like the idea of Blair ever leaving the pack; ever leaving her.

“Seriously, Luke, she won’t handle this well,” Mitch warned him.

“Dad won’t like it much either,” Blair added.

His gaze dropping to her, Luke closed the distance between them in one, fluid step. “You let me worry about that. Everything will be fine. Your parents will accept my place in your life.”
Aspen Montgomery was nine-years-old when she befriended Camden Priest—a boy with dead eyes and dark urges. Since that day, they’d been inseparable. She hadn’t expected to later develop a major crush on him. Or expected that the crush would fail to pass. Or ever thought that she'd grow to wish that she could one day claim him as her mate. It’s never going to happen. She knows that. To him, she's a friend, nothing more. So it’s time to make some changes to establish some better boundaries. Which would be a hell of a lot easier if he didn't fight her on it.

There is only one person in the world that Camden Priest gives a damn about—Aspen. She's his best friend, his anchor, his conscience, the very reason he's sane. There's only secret he ever kept from her … he wants more than friendship. Knowing she doesn't feel the same, he put a chokehold on his need for her. But when some asshole claims to be Aspen's true mate and danger starts closing in on her, Camden's control becomes precarious and platonic lines are crossed. He knows what he should do—leave it at a one-night stand to protect their friendship. He's just not so sure he can.
Knowing he’d tell her to go away if she knocked, nine-year-old Aspen Montgomery instead walked right on inside like she did it all the time.

Sitting at his desk, he didn’t look at her. Camden hardly ever did. But the young tiger shifter would know she was in his room, he’d easily pick up her scent.

Since moving to the group foster home, she’d gotten to know everyone. Except Camden Priest. She’d tried talking to him, but he always ignored her. He ignored everyone other than Corbin, the grizzly bear shifter who owned the house. Camden only talked to the other kids when he was picking fights with them. Fights he always won.

Aspen glanced around. The room was like hers but not. She’d tacked posters and drawings to her walls. His were bare, just like the corkboard. No personal things sat on his nightstand or dresser.

Unlike the other kids, he didn’t have a computer console or TV. Not anymore anyway. He’d broken his on purpose. Like smashed them to pieces.

He’d also torn up his room a few times—shredded the bedsheets, upturned the furniture, ripped up all his clothes. Corbin never got angry. He just tidied the mess while Camden sat in the corner staring at nothing.

A piece of paper peeked out from under the bed. It was a drawing. A drawing of a man who had blood pouring from his wrists. She’d heard that Camden drew “messed-up stuff.” Like a woman holding a little boy by the throat.

Aspen turned to look at him. Other than the set of colored pencils, the only thing on the desk was the glass he’d tipped upside down to trap a spider. He was watching the insect struggle to find a way out. She knew he’d kill it eventually. Camden didn’t only draw messed-up stuff, he did messed-up stuff. Like claw open the stomachs of the plush toys.

When Corbin asked why he did it, Camden had replied, “Just practicing what I’m gonna do to people.”

Everyone had told Aspen to keep her distance from “the weird kid.” She wanted to help him, though. Especially after overhearing Corbin talk about Camden’s past with the therapist, Dr Cooper. He and Aspen hadn’t been through the exact same thing, but it was similar enough to count.

Even her inner bearcat wanted to help him. Which wasn’t normal for her. The animal had no real interest in anyone, but she was curious about Camden and felt bad for him.

Aspen sidled up to his chair, wrinkling her nose as she watched the trapped spider. “Why do you always pluck off their legs?” He hadn’t done it to this spider yet, but he would.

He very slowly turned his head her way. Blue eyes landed on her. It was like looking into a doll’s eyes—there was nothing there. He didn’t answer her. He turned back to the spider.

“What do you do with the legs anyway?” she asked.

“Maybe I eat them,” he eventually replied, his voice sort of flat.

She felt her face scrunch up. “Gross.” She didn’t think he really ate them. He probably just wanted to freak her out so she’d leave. Aspen looked at the insect again. “Why do you hurt them?”

“Maybe I like it.”

“Huh.” Then she’d been wrong in what she’d thought. “I figured you liked to watch them die.” Which had creeped her out.

“Maybe I do.”

She cocked her hip. “So is, like, ‘maybe’ your favorite word?”

He slid her a bored, sideways look. “Maybe.”

She held out her hand. “I’m Aspen.”

“Bye, Aspen.”

He wasn’t getting rid of her that easily. “You’re Bogart, right?”

He frowned at her. “What?”

“It’s a name.”

“It’s not mine.”

“It could be. You look like a Bogart. I think I’ll call you that.”

He cut his gaze back to the spider. “Camden,” he muttered. “My name is Camden.”

“That suits you better.” Aspen crossed to the narrow bed and sat on the springy mattress. “So how come you live with Corbin?”

He shrugged. “Got nowhere else to go.”

“Same here. I have no clan. My mom was human, so me and my parents lived as humans. When they died, social services stuck me with a human family. They were okay. But they wanted rid of me when they realized I was half shifter.” Watching the spider continue to struggle, she said, “You should let it go.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s not nice to hurt living creatures unless they’re bad or hurt us first. The spider’s not a baddie, and it didn’t do anything to you. So if you really like to hurt things or people, you should save it for the meanies. There’s lots of them.” If her dad’s clan hadn’t been full of mean people, things might be very different now. “Where’s your mom and dad?”

“Dead.”

She blinked. “You sound glad. Were they meanies?”

Still staring at the spider, he tapped the glass. “I was a baby when my mom tried to kill me the first time.”
The golden rule of shallow flings is not to get attached, right? Well, Havana Ramos broke it. Big time. There’s just something about Tate Devereaux that pulls at her. Assertive, compelling, and self-assured, the Alpha cat shifter pushes every one of her best buttons. Like really, really hard. Having overheard an enlightening conversation, she knows he won’t give her more than a fling—something, to be fair, he’d told her well in advance. If she doesn’t want her heart to get bruised, it’s time to end what little they have. It’s not like he’ll care or anything. Except … it turns out that he does.

Newly-appointed Alpha Tate Devereaux is never bothered when women walk away. He can’t exactly blame them, given his distrustful cat’s habit of withdrawing from relationships. But when lone shifter Havana ends their fling, everything within Tate rebels against it—including his cat. Even as she and Tate work together to crush the threat looming over her, Havana holds him at arms’ length. But if she thinks she can end their fling with no real explanation and that he’ll just tip his hat and walk away, she’s forgotten one very important thing—there’s nothing easy about shaking off an Alpha.
In her opinion, the only thing shittier than breaking things off with a guy you cared for was knowing that said guy wouldn’t give a measly fuck. Which was why Havana Ramos really wished she lived in a world where ending a fling by text message wasn’t considered distasteful.

If Tate Devereaux wasn’t both her landlord and a male who she respected, she might have ignored her annoying morals and done this from the comfort of her sofa. Instead, she was currently walking along the street that led to the cozy little cul-de-sac where he lived. She would give him the courtesy of a face-to-face talk, and she would pretend not to be upset when all he did was shrug and tell her to enjoy the rest of her day.

This really shouldn’t be so hard. Casual relationships were supposed to be simple, fun, and easy to walk away from. But she’d found that they could be the messiest of all relationships. It was just far too easy for lines to get blurred and hearts to get bruised. There were just so many dos and don’ts that she found it hard to keep up. And the golden rule? Do not get attached.

Well, she broke the fucker, didn’t she?

Generally, she wasn’t afraid to break rules. It was sort of fun. But this particular rule was not made to be broken.

If she thought there was a chance the fling could evolve into something more, she’d stick around and see if anything came of it. But after earlier overhearing the words that Tate exchanged with his brother, she knew it was time to cut her losses and walk away.

Maybe it was better that Tate wouldn’t care. It meant she didn’t have to worry that he’d evict her out of spite. The apartment she shared with one of her closest friends wasn’t anything special, but it was pure gold for lone shifters like Havana. Living in a complex owned by the Alpha male of a strong pride gave her an element of protection.

It was only six months ago that Tate replaced his father as Alpha, but he’d already earned a reputation as a man who shouldn’t be fucked with. People rarely tangled with his kind anyway.

The full-blooded animals of his kind were referred to as Pallas’ cats, but shifters stuck with “pallas cats.” These feline shifters were moody, mercurial, and preloaded with an “I couldn’t give a rat’s ass” vibe. If someone pissed them off, they’d attack without hesitation and savagely tear into their prey with a demonic ferocity. Considering pallas cats were, pound for pound, one of the strongest breeds of shifter, they could do a whole lot of damage—despite not being much bigger than a housecat when in their weirdly cute animal form. In sum, they were crazy.

Havana’s kind weren’t exactly beings of pure light either. Devil shifters were bigger than the full-blooded animals of their kind, Tasmanian devils, and had long ago solidified their spot in the archives of terror with their notoriously bad tempers, blood-curdling shrieks, absolute fearlessness, and habit of feasting on the dead. In her opinion, they were simply too awesome not to exist.

Shifter society wasn’t terribly fond of Havana’s kind, so she’d known when she made inquiries about the vacant apartment that there was a chance she’d be turned away. But Tate hadn’t even commented on it. Then again, they’d both been a little caught up in their immediate sexual chemistry that had fairly crackled in the air. That day, he’d watched her closely as he gave her a tour of the apartment, a carnal promise in his eyes that made her skin prickle.

Snaring the attention of such a powerful Alpha had been something of a thrill. It was also a stroke to her ego, which had taken a pounding when she learned that her on-and-off-bed-buddy was now in a serious relationship. Dieter had flitted in and out of her world like a directionless butterfly for a year. She’d hoped there’d come a day when he’d be ready to commit. But when that day did come, Havana hadn’t been the woman he’d committed to.

When Tate made his move and was very clear that all he wanted was casual sex—no obligations, no romance, no expectations, no emotional investment—that had sounded good to her. Generally, she didn’t get involved with Alphas. She’d known too many who abused their power, bullied those they were supposed to protect, and sought to control people through fear … much like her old Alpha. Which was why she’d researched Tate before applying to rent the apartment.

She’d learned that he wasn’t one of those assholes who was drunk on power or who exercised control in a domineering way. He didn’t dish out orders while ruling from his metaphorical throne, lazily leaving his Beta to oversee matters. Tate was all up in the pride’s business—a constant, visible, active presence that wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty and stood between his pride and the world like a shield. So her wariness of Alphas hadn’t held her back from accepting his offer.
The Olympus Pride series centers around the ex-pride of Dominic’s mate, Mila. The first novel is her twin brother Alex’s story—he’s not a pallas cat like her or their father, though. He’s a wolverine like their mother. The heroine in the book, Bree, is a pallas cat; she’s also an omega.
But being waylaid by three shifters in the middle of the street was sucking Bree even further into an “I want to curl up and die” vortex. Car horns honked. Heels clacked on the sidewalk. Vehicles whooshed by. Every sound made her want to cry. God, she despised noise right now. And light. And people. And did the guy in front of her really have to talk so loudly?

Bree Dwyer sighed as the hyena prattled on and on, his smile warm and polite as he tried to seem like a good guy. She’d long ago learned that “nice” and “good” were two different things. There was nothing good about him. He oozed menace—and not in a sexy way. He had a dark, serpent look in his eyes that made her think of the very man he claimed to be searching for.

The three hyenas hadn’t stepped into her personal space, lost their relaxed posture, or dropped their amicable smiles even once. Smart. Because they had to have known that every store on both sides of this street was owned by her Alpha, Vinnie Devereaux. Also, most of her pride mates worked in said stores. If the hyenas made a misstep, it would be noticed, and they’d find themselves surrounded. Which would be fun for her but not so much for them.

As a rule, people tended to avoid her kind. Pallas cat shifters were disagreeable. Unpredictable. Moody. Brash.

They were also, pound for pound, one of the strongest breeds of shifter. Although her kind weren’t much bigger than a housecat when in their animal form and had the body of a harmless-looking ball of fur, they possessed an unparalleled ferocity that had been described by some as demonic.

Personally, Bree thought that was a little harsh.

It wasn’t as if they went on killing sprees for fun. They didn’t bother you so long as you didn’t both them. But if you pushed their buttons, they’d proceed to attack in a snarling, hissing, unholy display of pure fury—giving zero thought to whether their enemies were bigger, stronger, armed, or accompanied by backup. And what was wrong with that?

The chatty hyena sighed. He’d introduced himself as John Jones, but she wasn’t buying that was his real name. “You’re not listening to me, are you?” he asked, his steel-gray eyes gleaming with mild exasperation.

Bree frowned. Did she look like she was in a fit state to hold a conversation? Apparently so. Well, that was good. Maybe her coworkers wouldn’t notice she was dying inside.

“I was. At first,” she replied. “But then I got bored because you kept repeating questions I’ve already answered.” Plus, it was kind of hard to concentrate when her head felt like it was trapped in a vice. And she didn’t exactly care for the subject matter. Nor did her inner cat. The feline was pacing and lashing her bushy tail about.

“You didn’t answer my questions truthfully,” he said. “I’ve assured you that I mean Paxton no harm. Yet, you refuse to tell me where I can find him.”

“No, you refuse to hear what I’m saying: He. Is. Dead.”

“How can you be so sure when there’s no corpse to prove it?”

“Because there’s been no whisper of his existence for the last four years.” Before that, there had been a constant flow of stories about the twisted shit that Paxton had been up to since becoming a lone shifter. He’d mostly worked as an assassin, but not as a mere sniper. No, he’d brutalized his targets.

All pallas cats were ruthless, but Paxton? There’d been a cruel, sadistic quality to his bloodthirstiness. “People who enjoy killing generally don’t just stop.”

“True,” conceded John. “But I think he did. I think he gave up that lifestyle for the one thing on Earth that means anything to him. His true mate. You.”

A shard of pain lanced her chest. Finding your predestined mate was supposed to be something joyous, something to celebrate. You weren’t supposed to fear them. You weren’t supposed to feel relieved that they were dead. You weren’t supposed to be paired with someone so fucked up—someone who could never love you or be a point of safety for you.

“If I meant anything to him, he wouldn’t have left me,” she said. “Paxton cared for no one.”

“You were a child when he became a loner. Eleven-years-old. Far too young for him to claim. How old were you when you first sensed he was your mate?”

Barely five. The discovery had rattled both her and her cat. It really didn’t take an omega like Bree to sense the wrongness in him.

He, too, had known they were mates. Back then, she hadn’t understood how someone so cold and hollow could feel the presence of their true mate. But, as Vinnie later pointed out, Paxton wasn’t a person who experienced the sort of things that blocked the frequency of mating bonds, like fears, insecurities, or uncertainties.
