B has been cutting Lucas Vallois’ hair for nearly eight years and he finally get his hands on all of Lucas’s friends as they prepare for Ian’s wedding.
It was just supposed to be a day spent with a bunch of sexy men.
How could things go so wrong?
****The Unbreakable B is a 15,000 word short story set between Fracture and Ignite that gives a fun glimpse into the lives of all the couples as they prepare for Ian’s wedding. Get ready for one crazy afternoon!
It was too damn early. Nobody wanted their hair cut or styled at this ungodly hour—at least none of his clients.

The mattress shifted and sank beside him. Warm skin brushed his under the blankets and B smiled. Ricky had spent the night again. Curling up against his big chest…and other big assets…was a wonderful way to start the day.

Except for that damn alarm.

“What’s with the alarm? What time is it?” Ricky asked, his voice was low and husky with sleep. A muscly arm reached out and wrapped around B’s slender waist, and he started to pull B closer.

Biting back a moan, B reached out and snatched his phone so he could thumb off the alarm before he was snuggled against Ricky’s warm body. B wasn’t normally a snuggler, and he wasn’t a sleepover kind of guy. He liked his freedom and independence. In the past, he’d been quick to cut loose any lovers who became clingy and made demands like monogamy.

But Ricky was proving to be his weakness.

And it wasn’t just because the man was an incredible lover; there was an unexpected thoughtfulness to him. It was as if he could read B’s mind. He knew where to push boundaries and when to back off. Sleepovers with Ricky were fast becoming one of B’s favorite things.

Ricky pressed his face into the soft skin between B’s shoulder blades, sending a shiver through him with the rough scrape of his whiskers before pressing a gentle kiss to his spine. “I thought you didn’t go in until eleven,” Ricky murmured.

“I don’t, but today’s special. I’ve got exclusive appointments all day.”

“Really? Someone can do that?”

B let out a deep, throaty laugh, and Ricky tightened his arm around him, pulling him in closer. “Oh honey, you can if you’re Lucas Vallois.”

“The billionaire?”

“The one and only.”

B couldn’t help the little sigh that slipped out at the mention of Lucas. There were few men more handsome than the billionaire, starting with his sexy husband. And B was going to get his hands on both of them today.

Just the thought of his schedule put a little zing in his blood, waking him up better than that damn alarm had.

Behind him, he felt Ricky shift so that he was now leaning over B with a somewhat mutinous expression. Apparently Ricky had heard that sigh. “You got a thing for Vallois?”

That little stab of jealousy unexpectedly warmed B’s heart. He reached up and placed a hand against his lover’s cheek, taking in his dark eyes and soft, full lips. Lucas might be a handsome devil, but Ricky was no slouch either. B was looking forward to waking up many more mornings just like this.

“I’ve been cutting Lucas Vallois’s hair for almost eight years now. He’s a sexy gentleman and that is all. Besides, he’s got himself a husband that is the center of his entire universe.”

“And he hired you for the day?”

B lifted his chin a little as his smile widened up at Ricky. “I’m a wedding gift,” he said proudly.

“What?”

“Speaking of, I’ve got to get up, baby.” He gently patted and pushed at Ricky until he lifted off B so that he could climb out of bed. The air was cool in his apartment, teasing his naked skin as he hurried over to the dresser for a clean pair of briefs. Oh, the pink ones with the bright-red cherries. Those were his favorite pair. His lucky pair. Today was a special day, and he wanted everything to be perfect.

“Seriously, how are you a wedding present?” Ricky demanded from the bed.

“Ian Pierce, the chef and owner of Rialto, is getting married in two days. He’s a close friend of Lucas’s. As a wedding present, I am cutting the hair and overseeing spa treatments for the entire wedding party and their significant others. Eight men.” B paused and tapped a finger to his lips. “I have a feeling I’m gonna have to tie Rowe Ward to the damn chair. That man is not going to sit still long enough to have his nails cleaned up or allow me to use a good facial scrub on him.”

“Sounds like you’re going to be busy today. Want me to drop off something for your lunch? I have to go in at two for a meeting, and then I’m off. I can swing by that sushi place you love and pick something up on my way to work.”

B dropped his briefs on the dresser and crawled back into bed. Ricky smiled into the kiss, opening instantly to allow B to explore his mouth. With a growl, Ricky made a grab for the back of B’s neck as if he intended to pull him flat on top of him, but B quickly slipped away again. As much as he’d love to remain in bed and have his wicked way with the sexy man, there really wasn’t time. And no one made Lucas Vallois wait.
But when one attack after another comes, he grows convinced he has another enemy.
Ian tries to handle things by himself, but his friends are soon drawn in when the attacks become violent. That’s when Ian realizes the target isn’t Rialto. It’s him.
Every instinct was driving him to jump in, to offer a bit of advice, to tweak how he was holding the knife a tiny bit. But this was about letting go. He was the chef de cuisine, the Head Chef, and the chef de cuisine did not worry about training the new commis.

That was the job of the chef de partie, and Isabella was a fantastic line chef. Technically, she was one of his chefs de tournant, which meant that she was skilled and experienced enough to work all the various kitchen stations. She dove into each of Ian’s new recipes and creations with amazing enthusiasm, eager to wow Rialto’s guests.

But she also had amazing patience and a great way of clearly explaining things. She’d trained two other commis who had come into Ian’s kitchen, but this one was different.

A gentle hand landed on Ian’s shoulder, and he twisted to find his sous chef, Sean, smiling at him with a knowing amusement in his gaze. “He’s going to do great.”

Ian gave a little sigh and rolled his eyes at himself. Sean was right. Sean was pretty much always right.

But it was Wade Addams’s first day as a junior member of Ian’s kitchen at Rialto. The young man had been among the first he’d hired as a server nearly four years ago when he opened. Wade had suffered through a rough childhood, something Ian understood all too well, but he’d flourished at Rialto. Ian had watched the young man’s confidence soar as he excelled at his job and became friends with everyone in the restaurant.

And in the evenings when the restaurant was quiet, Ian and Wade had bonded over a love of cooking. They swapped recipes and talked about new ideas and techniques.

Ian knew it was only a matter of time before Wade finally agreed that he was ready to move out of serving and into the kitchen.

Today, he was beginning his formal training. He was going to start as the garde manger, the pantry chef. It wasn’t exactly an exciting position, since the garde manger was responsible for only cold dishes such as salads, but Ian had added a special duck pâté to the menu for that evening to give Wade a little variety.

“Of course he is. He’s already a great cook without the formal training,” Ian said stiffly, as if anyone could doubt Wade’s skills.

“I was thinking that he’s determined to impress you, Chef.”

Ian could feel embarrassment heat his cheeks lightly. Okay, he had to admit that he had something of a fatherly relationship with his staff at Rialto. He’d met other chefs who ran their kitchens like militant dictators and expected the same brutal manner from their sous chef, but not Ian. The staff at Rialto were a second family to him.

And yes, he was younger than nearly everyone in his kitchen, but no one seemed to blink an eye at it. Cooking was his life. He’d proved himself time and again with his unique meals and by having the top-rated restaurant in the city of Cincinnati every year since they had opened.

“Have you decided whether you’re going to keep him here at Rialto or move him to your new restaurant?”

Ian shook his head. “Wade is staying at Rialto. This kitchen is more formal and will give him the excellent experience he needs to expand his skills. The new place will be smaller, and most of the chefs will be accustomed to working multiple stations. I don’t want to throw that at him yet.”

Sean nodded, his eyes on Wade and Isabella. “I’m loath to suggest this because she’s amazing, but have you considered Isabella for the sous chef position there? She’s got the experience to handle whatever’s thrown at her and knows when to crack the whip.”

Grinning, Ian gave his own sous chef a little side-eye. “You’d be willing to give up your right arm so my new restaurant can flourish?”

“Oh, I plan to bitch and moan endlessly about it,” Sean reassured him and Ian chuckled. “But she is amazing. She’d have your new place running efficiently. Plus, it would mean Rialto would finally have some real competition in this old town.”

“I agree.”

He loved having Isabella in his kitchen at Rialto. Sean and Isabella made a formidable team, keeping the entire kitchen working like a well-oiled machine. On the nights Sean was off, either Isabella or Ian slid into his place. Ian had to admit, things tended to be calmer on the nights that Isabella was in charge. Ian’s presence seemed to put everyone a bit on edge; they all wanted to impress the Chef.

“I’ve been making up my final list of who I might consider moving to the new place and who I’d definitely prefer to keep at Rialto,” Ian continued. “After the dinner rush this evening, can you stop by my office? We can go over it. I’d like to get your thoughts.”

Hollis’s blue eyes glittered in the van’s faint overhead light as he looked at Ian. “That’s when I was a cop. I can do whatever the hell I want now.” Although there was a hint of sadness in his voice, his slight grin thumped Ian right in the heart. So did the southern drawl that became more pronounced when he was exhausted. They’d been there for over four hours and midnight had hit Cincinnati with a noisy winter storm. This was Hollis’s sixth night on the job, so Ian couldn’t imagine how tired he had to be. “Why didn’t you ask that before you insisted on coming?” Hollis continued, “Told you this is the boring part of the job.”

“Are you kidding? Boring? This van is the coolest thing. I can’t believe Shane pays a real local delivery company for the use of their logo.” He glanced around the tricked-out vehicle that held two captain’s chairs, several monitors, and listening devices. “There’s even a toilet back there.”

“Which you won’t use and we’ve been here a long time.” Hollis chuckled. “It has a curtain you can pull around it.”

“Shut up. You haven’t used it either.”

“I haven’t had to. But I didn’t drink a grande, skinny, vanilla something or another either.”

Ian rolled his eyes, used to being teased about his coffee habit.

Since Hollis had been placed on leave from the police department, he’d done a few surveillance jobs for Jude’s friend, Shane Stephens, but he was hesitant to take on anything permanent. Things were still too up in the air, though they had just learned the investigation into Hollis’s actions during the take-down of the crime boss, Boris Jagger, was wrapping up earlier than expected. Hollis wasn’t going to be brought up on charges—not after rescuing so many kids—but he wouldn’t be getting his job back either. Ian had been worried about him because he knew Hollis had loved his career in law enforcement, but the jobs for Shane seemed to cheer him. This had been the longest one so far, and with Ian’s Rialto schedule, he’d only seen Hollis in passing for the last week. Which was why he’d asked to come along.

He missed having the cop—er, ex-cop—in his bed.

Hollis glanced away from the monitors again. “I’ve seen you pee, Ian. I’m familiar with every inch of your body and had my tongue in your ass, so what’s with the shy?”

Heat speared into Ian and he squirmed in the seat. “That’s different. It would just be weird in here.”

“When the urge gets bad enough, you’ll give in.”

He didn’t have to go that badly yet, but he’d eventually end up using the small facility despite the fact that he just knew the sound would echo through the entire van. And yeah, Ian didn’t have any secrets left when it came to Hollis, but he just couldn’t shake the idea of how weird it would be to piss in a van in front of him. “I know I’m being ridiculous. Just let it go.”

He leaned back and rubbed his gritty eyes, which burned from looking at computer screens for so long. They were watching a house on a quiet Avondale street with colorful, narrow, two-story townhomes. This wasn’t the best neighborhood to be holed up in a delivery van, but Ian felt pretty safe with Hollis, who still carried a gun. And the rain pattering the van and obscuring their vision of the pink house with boarded windows would keep most people off the streets. He’d thought private investigating would be a lot more exciting, though. He’d probably watched too many movies.

Hollis leaned forward and touched Ian’s jaw with his thumb. “Hey, GQ,” he said softly in his southern, raspy accent. “You look so tired. We’re going to be here hours yet, so you can take a nap. That seat goes back.”

Damn. The way Hollis looked at him burned him up from the inside. He’d rather stay awake so he could look back. Especially tonight since he’d finally buzzed off that bad dye job. His hair wasn’t the wonderful, disheveled mess Ian had loved, but it was the right color again. He couldn’t wait until it was long enough for him to bury his fingers in the thick, blond strands. And he loved the way Hollis’s blue eyes stood out against the lighter color, too. “I can’t sleep. I could miss the perp.”

The warm laughter that filled the van made him happy he’d come.

“The perp?” Hollis asked. “God, you’re so fucking cute. Come here.” He leaned back in his chair and patted his lap.

“We’ll definitely miss the perp if I do that.” He frowned. “And quit calling me cute.”

Hollis crooked his fingers to gesture him closer. “Never. Because you are. Come on,” he coaxed softly.

As he turned back, something inside his chest eased, a hidden tension he hadn’t even realized was there until it was already slipping out of his body.

Lucas’s penthouse was exactly as he remembered it when he’d last stood there more than a month ago. The wide open floor plan and wall of windows looking out on the city was stunning. The sun had set an hour ago and now the lights of downtown Cincinnati reflected off the Ohio River and glowed against the velvety black sky.

Lucas had one of the best views of the city and Andrei didn’t think he’d ever grow tired of it, but there was another sight he was looking forward to even more. A certain sexy, bossy CEO who had a smile that made him weak in the knees.

For the past week, Lucas had come to him almost every day after work. He’d even stayed overnight a few times. Falling asleep tangled in Lucas’s long limbs and waking to slow kisses was fast becoming a perk of dating Lucas that he couldn’t live without. Just having the man relaxed and in his arms had gone a long way to settling the last of his lingering fears over Lucas’s safety.

But two weeks cooped up in his small, dark apartment had left Andrei restless and edgy.

That was over now. Today’s trip to the doctor had seen his cast removed and he was officially cleared for more strenuous activity. The doctor cautioned him to go slow, but Andrei was free to go back to work on Monday.

In the meantime, he had three nights and two full days to test his body with Lucas and he was looking forward to every second of it.

After placing the pizza on the island in the center of the kitchen, Andrei shucked his leather jacket and tossed it over the back of the sofa before continuing to the stairs in search of Lucas. Would it be too much to hope that he was already in the bedroom waiting for him?

Other than a little heavy petting and some frustrated grinding, Lucas had crushed any efforts for them to go farther, using the excuse that Andrei needed to heal first. Andrei was putting an end to that bullshit tonight, too.

Lucas’s deep voice echoed down the hall as he laid into some poor employee. No, the sexy man was not in the bedroom but his office. Biting back a sigh, he leaned against the doorjamb, his hands shoved in the pockets of his faded jeans as he watched Lucas prowl behind his desk with his cell phone pressed to his ear. The CEO had shed his jacket and his tie dangled loose around his neck. The white sleeves were rolled above his elbows, exposing strong forearms.

Damn, he was sexy. Lucas’s every movement was sleek and smooth, exuding barely restrained power. He was a man born to lead, to protect, and to command respect. It radiated from his bearing and was stamped in his features. Andrei almost had to laugh.

Watching Lucas now, he had to admit that he hadn’t stood a chance. A groan rose up his throat as he thought of pinning Lucas down to the desktop, tearing away clothes to get to the warm, golden skin that lay beneath. He wanted to lick every wicked inch of him so that his hard muscles strained and jumped under his touch.

As Lucas paced, a scowl twisted his features. He paused and started to lean down to his laptop when he caught sight of Andrei. Lifting one finger, Lucas indicated he needed more time to deal with business. Not a great start to the night Andrei had planned, but he understood. Building a multi-million-dollar empire wasn’t something that could be done with your typical nine-to-five schedule.

With a nod, Andrei returned to the first floor where he grabbed a slice of pizza and opened the messenger app on his phone. He sent a quick text to Rowe stating that the doctor had cleared him for work.

Another text went to Ian informing the young man that his cast had come off and that he was finally free of his apartment. Ian had been checking on him regularly, helping to keep him sane through the boredom.

Rowe immediately fired back: There’s no way that fucking witch doctor cleared you for fieldwork.

Cast off. Mobile. I can work.

Fuck. You’ve got paperwork to finish.

Andrei growled at his phone as he typed: No way. I took care of most of that bullshit already.

You can run training classes for the next two weeks.

Is this your way of getting me to quit?

Before Rowe could answer, a text rolled in from Ian congratulating him on his progress and promising to have a table at Rialto saved for him and Lucas for Saturday night at eight. Andrei grinned and reined in the urge to comment that if he and Lucas were walking Saturday night, they’d be there. Hell, Andrei was hoping to not put pants on again until Monday morning. Instead, he opted for a polite, We’ll be there.
It still didn’t dislodge the lump that had swelled in his throat. He’d known this was going to be a difficult day. Not like he didn’t have ample warning and time to prepare. But even with time and warning, emotions rose and swirled in his chest, making it difficult to breathe.

This should have been easier.

Lucas Vallois stood, his muscular frame expertly wrapped in a black tux. He slipped his free hand casually into one pocket, looking for all the world like he was gracing the cover of some men’s magazine. The room went quiet as Lucas stared down at Ian Pierce, now Banner, giving him a genuine smile that held all the warmth of what he felt for the man. Lucas loved him, just as they all did. It was impossible not to love Ian.

“When Ian came into my life, everything changed for the better. Not a day goes by where I don’t think about how lucky I am to have met him. He took a ragtag group of friends and turned us into a real family. And when I say real family, I mean the group of people you would do anything for. The group of people you can’t live without. Ian came into our world and rounded us out in ways we didn’t even know we needed. Our lives are blessed with his presence, and I truly enjoy all the time spent with him.” He paused and Ian gave him a radiant smile.

“One thing I cherish most is our weekly breakfasts. As some of you know, Ian lived with me in the penthouse for a time. Though, I’m pretty sure Rowe and Snow lived there as well, considering the amount of time they spent there.”

“It’s the one place we could always find a free meal,” Snow shouted back at him. A ripple of laughter floated around the room, and Lucas shook his head with a smile.

Rowe had to agree, but the four of them knew Lucas’s well-stocked fridge was not the reason for their nearly constant appearances at the penthouse. It was so much about the family Lucas was talking about.

When the room was quiet, Lucas continued his story. “Too soon, Ian wanted to move out and get his own place. Now, some people call me a controlling man.” Lucas paused again for the low laughter that filled the reception hall.

Controlling was putting it lightly, but Rowe was pleased to see that Lucas’s husband, Andrei, had helped to mellow those instincts a bit.

“Controlling or not, I thought it was too soon for Ian to leave. To get me to be more reasonable, he promised to come over twice a week and cook breakfast at the penthouse. He said it was his way to make sure I was eating properly. It was my way of checking up on him. We both knew that no matter how amazing Ian’s cooking was, it was never about the food. It was about touching base with those you love.

“Years have passed since we first made that agreement. We both now have new families. He still comes to my place and spoils me as he has from the very beginning. And now he spoils my daughter just as much. Ian is a warm and caring man, who loves with everything he is. Hollis, you’re a lucky guy.”

Hollis, looking fine in his black tux, raised his glass and nodded his head.

“Finding true love is one of the greatest gifts we can receive,” Lucas continued. “I couldn’t be happier that Ian and Hollis have found theirs and I wish them many, many wonderful years together.”

Ian stood and hugged Lucas, joyful tears on his cheeks.

A hand touched Rowe’s and he turned to find his partner, Noah Keegan, watching him. As it always did when he looked at the man, his heart gave a little excited patter. Noah had left his wavy, brownish-blond hair loose, and he looked fantastic in his suit. Rowe himself might have complained about putting on his penguin suit—neither of them was the suit type—but his dressed-up surfer man looked pretty damn sexy tonight. He winked at him and threaded their fingers together.

The Ault Park Pavilion was the perfect spot for Ian’s wedding and reception. The location was one of the most sought after in all the city, a small oasis away from downtown with its lush rose garden and old trees providing a green wall against the city and residential neighborhoods.

But for all the exquisitely landscaped gardens, the real jewel of the park was the white-pillared hall at the top of the hill. Two sets of wide steps led up to it, and in the middle was a tiered fountain that glowed in the evening, lit by warm, yellow lights.
After three years, Snow and Jude’s relationship is still passionate and strong. They’re getting ready for a romantic vacation at home when Jude receives a horrifying call no one wants to receive. His youngest brother was found barely clinging to life. While Jude’s family is rallying around Jordan, Jude is determined to find out what happened to him.

Snow and Jude follow the clues, investigating a side of Jordan’s life none of them knew about…and is far darker than any would have believed possible. They get pulled deeper into the seedy side of life, while echoes from a past Snow thought he walked away from return to offer an unexpected insight into the cause of Jordan’s injuries.
But someone else has noticed their involvement and is furious, putting them both in danger. The risk is high but so is Jude’s determination to find the truth—though the knowledge could very well fracture his heart.
He turned into the stream, letting it pour over his face as he thought about how he planned to spend the next week with the enigmatic Dr. Ashton Frost—or as he was better known to his friends, Snow. If Jude had his way, it would be mostly in bed.

They both had vacation time, and it had been far too long since they’d gotten in anything other than quickies with their crazy schedules.

Just the thought of more time in bed with his boyfriend had his blood pumping as hot as the water.

Normally, dual vacations meant a trip somewhere, but after surviving the hustle and bustle of the holiday season just a few weeks ago, they’d both decided on quality time at home together. The last month especially had been hard with so many out sick with the flu and Jude picking up extra shifts.

So, seven days of just the two of them, cooking and being together, sounded like heaven on Earth. God, he couldn’t wait to drag Snow into their bed and keep him there. Three years hadn’t dampened the explosive heat they had between them, and he couldn’t see any amount of time doing that.

He wanted the man with a ferocity that still awed him.

The stall door opened, and he grinned, wiping the water off his face. “You got home earlier than you thought you would. How was little Daciana Vallois?”

Snow stepped into the shower, his naked body the best thing Jude had seen all day. “Perfect, as you can probably imagine. How could a child of Lucas and Andrei’s be anything but?”

“I wish I could have joined you. My last call of the day ran longer than I’d expected. I’m dying to see her.”

“She’s gorgeous. Tiny and precious. Andrei’s genes are strong—that baby has his dark, brown eyes already.”

“Poor Lucas. He doesn’t stand a chance.”

Crystal blue eyes bored into his and he could see a question, one he was very familiar with, in Snow’s gaze. They’d discussed having children, and though Jude knew a part of him would always long for them, he knew how Snow felt. Snow didn’t want kids. The idea terrified him. And Snow came first for Jude. Always would. But those doubts he saw in Snow’s eyes bothered him.

He tugged him closer under the water, loving the slide of taut muscles against him. Snow had a long, muscular body that drove him crazy, especially when it was wet. “Ready for our vacation?”

“Like you wouldn’t believe.” Snow’s hands settled on Jude’s hips.

“Oh, yeah? Because I’ve been fantasizing about being in your ass all day, and nothing is going to thwart my plans.”

Jude turned Snow so he could nestle into that perfect ass. His hand snaked around to hold Snow’s throat, his cock instantly filling as he rubbed it between Snow’s cheeks. Snow moaned and leaned into him. One palm on the man’s throat and he could have anything he wanted. Desire speared through Jude like lightning. It was always like this with them.

Snow turned his head to take Jude’s mouth in a kiss that turned to fire fast. His general had the best mouth with a full, bottom lip and the sexiest dip in the middle of his upper one. Jude licked Snow’s lips, sucked his bottom lip into his mouth, then slid his tongue along Snow’s, groaning at the feel of that sexy ass cradling his dick. He reached for the soap and got his hand nice and lathered before wrapping his fingers around Snow’s hard cock. Snow came up on his toes to thrust. He loved the feel of that smooth length in his hand, the crinkle of pubic hair against his knuckles.

Jude marveled over the connection they still had, over how powerful his desire seemed to grow for Snow. The man could break him down until all he felt was need. Raw, basic need. He wanted to bask in Snow for the rest of his life.

He tightened his grip, knowing Snow liked things on the edge of rough, knowing he could add that extra bit of pressure to make the man beg. There was nothing like reducing his general down to monosyllables. Snow was in charge in every aspect of his career and quite often in their life—until it came to the bedroom. There, he beautifully gave up control often to Jude in a way that made Jude feel like the most blessed man on the planet. He lived for turning Snow into a sweating, heaving mess. There was nothing like it.

He couldn’t imagine a more perfect man for him.

As Jude stroked Snow’s dick, his mouth opened over Snow’s, their tongues sliding against each other. He bit and nipped at Snow’s sexy lips, then slid his tongue in deep again to search out Snow’s unique flavor. Snow groaned into his mouth, his hand coming up to cradle Jude’s head. “Want you,” he whispered into Jude’s mouth. “Now.”
Hollis Banner was enamored of Ian at first sight. He’s kept his distance, knowing the gorgeous, self-confident man is out of his league. Hollis will do whatever it takes to keep Ian safe as they escape to a safe house with a couple of Ian's overprotective friends. He loved the crowded buildings that featured different nineteenth-century architecture, loved that people decorated their bikes with Christmas lights, and he enjoyed quite a few of the restaurants tucked into the old structures.

After parking his Volt, he strolled up 14th Street toward Vine where he was meeting Andrei at a sushi bar. He tossed his favorite brown wool scarf around his neck, tugged on the matching beanie, and strode down the sidewalk, weaving through the evening crowds.

OTR was busy for a Tuesday night, but the various weathermen had started warning that a major snow storm was moving into the area despite the fact that it wasn’t yet December. Ian had a feeling that many people were trying to enjoy some time out and about before they were potentially snowed in for a few days.

Not that Cincinnati was prone to blizzards, but occasionally the tri-state area would get hit with a good blast, shutting down roads and closing schools. And no one wanted to get stuck inside when it was prime time to get Christmas shopping done and attend holiday parties.

Even now, snow fell in soft flakes, giving the historic district more of a nostalgic atmosphere. He stopped and lifted his face to feel the tiny stings as they melted on his cheeks.

He’d been working too many long hours, and this was the first night he’d taken off since Thanksgiving. Spending it with Andrei was a no-brainer considering how down the man had been lately. Thinking of the reason why, Ian pulled out his cell phone to see if Lucas had texted him back from earlier. Sure enough, he had. Lucas always responded, but all his answers lately had been nothing more than terse, short sentences. This text held just one word.

Yes.

Ian had point-blank asked if he would be home soon.

Lucas was running—something Ian was not used to when it came to his friend. Lucas Vallois was the ultimate family man, even though he’d never seen himself that way. But Ian knew he was the force that held their group together, so his long trip overseas had left all his friends feeling off for the holiday. Off and sad, and Ian was still pissed about it.

But then, they were all reeling from what had happened just before the holiday. The culprits behind the fires that had razed some of Lucas’s businesses as well as some of Rowe’s clients turned out to be more of Boris Jagger’s damaged victims. They’d planned to help those kids get home, not turn them in—despite the damage to property and even the death of one of Rowe’s bodyguards. But it had been too late. Lucas couldn’t deal with the knowledge that his actions against Chris Green had brought on the death of their friend, and Rowe’s wife, Melissa. He’d taken off—supposedly to work, but Ian knew better.

Ian’s sleep issues had been out of control as well. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the twins’ murder and suicide over and over, so he went out of his way to avoid sleeping. Unfortunately, when he finally gave in, he never knew where he was going to end up.

Snow was the only one who’d caught him in the act, calling him a “sleep crawler.” He didn’t walk around like normal sleepwalkers. No, he scuttled around his house like some kind of animal. Ian couldn’t contemplate what kind of messed up inner psyche he had to have to spend his unconscious time creeping around on all fours.

That morning, he’d awakened downstairs in his guest bathroom, curled up on the floor—the door shut. Just knowing he’d hit those stairs while asleep scared the crap out of him. But it made him sad that he’d once again awakened in a safe, contained spot. The last time he’d been in the laundry room. That was the only thing Ian had managed to figure out after doing this for years: he was looking for somewhere safe.

It pissed him off that he had no control over the problem. Luckily, it only happened when his stress levels were through the roof. Like now.

His phone rang, and Andrei’s image popped up on the screen. It was actually a picture of Lucas and Andrei he’d snapped at Rialto one night. They had been looking at each other like each was responsible for the other’s air. He sighed, angry with Lucas all over again, then answered. “I’m almost there. Sorry I’m running late.”

“No problem. I thought I’d go ahead and order your drink. What do you want?”

“Beer is fine. See what they have of the local brews. I’m in the mood to try something new.”

Jude stared at his mother’s smiling face on the other side of his open front door. He blinked a few times, completely disoriented. “What time is it?”

“Seven.” She bustled past him in a thick, yellow coat, carrying a box of doughnuts. She stopped, eyeing him up and down, her red cheeks chapped from the wind. “You two aren’t ready? Why aren’t you ready?”

“Ready?” he repeated stupidly, shivering as cold air swept up the stairwell with an ominous whistle. He shut the door and watched her set down the box and pull out a stack of papers. A thick stack. He looked down at his loose sweats and black T-shirt. “Ready?” Sleep still graveled his voice as he struggled to get a few of the wheels turning in his brain.

“We’re house hunting today, remember?” She walked into the kitchenette and sniffed. “You don’t have coffee going? Thought I taught you better than that. Where’s the magical one-cup machine?”

“I like brewed better, so we don’t have one.”

She sighed and began unwrapping heavy layers of clothes, tossing her yellow scarf and coat over one of the small dining chairs.

He closed his eyes and rubbed them, wishing the fog would finally clear from his brain. He felt like he was two steps behind his mother and that was never a good place to be. “Mana, I know you’re excited about this, but none of the open houses will be open yet. It’s the crack-ass of dawn on a Sunday. I thought you’d come after church.”

“I skipped it today. God will understand that my boys are ready to start their lives together.” She winked at him before grabbing the coffeepot and filling it with water. “I found some wonderful homes. I printed them, so I thought we could go over each one this morning and see if you two want to rule any out. But I already made a map of the best route we can take to see them all.” She added coffee grounds and flipped on the machine as she snorted and muttered under her breath. “Crack-ass backwards.”

As the last tendrils of sleep cleared from his mind, Jude realized he hadn’t even heard Snow come in. He liked to be awake when he did, liked to revel in the fact that the man had a key to his place. And actually used it.

Anna cocked her head and pointed at the bathroom door. “He’s in the shower?”

Jude didn’t have the heart to tell his mother that Snow had probably just arrived after his shift, which meant he’d been up all night. He’d switched with another doctor and had more than likely forgotten about the house hunting. Jude sure as shit had. His hope of a lazy day in bed with his general fled. He’d been pulling long hours himself and they’d barely seen each other all week.

He sighed. “I’ll go warn him you’re here.”

She plopped her hands on her hips. “Warn?”

He grimaced, rubbing his eyes again. “Sorry. Still half-asleep. I meant let him know.” He shook his head as he walked into the bathroom. He’d meant warn because Snow usually paraded around the small apartment naked before crawling into bed.

Life is good.

Steam filled the small room. He shut the door behind him and eyed the tired man leaning with both hands braced on the wall. Water poured over his bent head, darkening his hair and trailing down the tense muscles of his back. Seemed he hadn’t had enough time to wind down. Jude wanted to take his clothes off, step under that water, and force him to relax in the way they did best. Snow tilted his head and let the water pour over his face as he rolled his shoulders. Lean muscles rippled along his spine. Jude’s breath caught in his throat.

Damn, had it really been a week with no sex?

Light blue eyes flashed as Snow spotted him and turned. His smile was brittle with exhaustion at the edges, but still full of heat and welcome. Jude wished his mother was anywhere but in the other room.

“Come here,” Snow murmured, his eyes narrowing, his hands moving slower over his wet skin.

Since he’d fallen for Snow, heat stayed at a low boil at all times in Jude’s gut. It flared out of control with the least amount of provocation. He shut his eyes against the temptation, only to grunt when he was suddenly grabbed and pulled under the water, clothes and all. His hot, wet boyfriend immediately plastered his body to Jude’s and cupped the sides of his head to tilt it back.

“You planned to take all that off anyway, right?” Snow slanted his mouth over Jude’s as his hand slid down his back and into the loose, now sopping wet, waist of his sweatpants. Snow gripped his ass and rubbed his body against him.
His eyes locked on the cloudy Tupperware container tightly clutched in his left hand because it was easier to look at that than the rows of headstones and statuary that filled the rolling hills around them. He hadn’t been back in a few months and in truth, he hadn’t expected it to be this hard. But then, the man behind the steering wheel had a way of making the world just a little easier to tolerate.

“Hey,” Noah said, dragging his gaze up. Concern filled his expression, making his smile a little uncertain. “You want me to come with you?”

His hand tightened on the container, thumb sliding along the smooth edge. “No, I got this.”

Rowe reached for the door handle with his free hand and Noah grabbed him by the lapel of his coat, jerking him across the center console so that Noah could press his nose into Rowe’s hair. “I wasn’t trying to push you out of the car. Take your time,” he whispered before brushing a soft kiss across his temple.

A smile teased one corner of Rowe’s mouth and some of the tension eased. It was just one of the many things he loved about this man. Noah was endlessly patient with him, always seemingly happy to let Rowe move at his own pace. Well, except when it came to sex. Then they were both frantically racing to get naked and as close as possible.

“I should go. She’s already waiting.”

Noah nodded and released his hold on Rowe, sitting back in the driver’s seat. An easy smile slid across his handsome face, but it did nothing to mask the worry still filling his blue eyes. Rowe was tempted to lean across and kiss away his concern, but instead he opened the door and climbed out of the car.

Gravel crunched underfoot as he walked down the wide asphalt road. The maples and oaks were barren now, but there was still a heavy green on the horizon from the various pine and spruce trees that filled the cemetery. Mel had always liked Spring Grove. They’d gone for walks here when they’d first been dating, enjoying the quiet of the park, the beautiful landscaping, and the interesting tombs. Rowe had laughed on more than one occasion at the elaborate and ridiculous tales she’d crafted about the owners of the over-the-top mausoleums.

A woman standing not more than a dozen yards from the car looked up at the sound of his approach. A shaft of pain lanced through his heart when he saw her smile. It was Mel’s, but it wasn’t Mel. Gretchen looked like her sister. Mel had been three years older, but they had the same smile, same eyes, same chin, so sometimes it was hard to look at Gretchen.

“You’re getting slow in your old age,” Gretchen called. She turned, lifting the baby heavily wrapped against the mild cold higher onto her hip.

“It’s the day after Thanksgiving. I’m still trying to digest the meal. You try getting out of bed after that,” he replied, leaving the road to cut across the greenish-brown lawn to the graveside. He stopped beside Gretchen and his eyes swept her face slowly, taking in the similarities. Her smile slipped a little as if she knew what he was doing. “It’s good to see you,” he finally said in a low, rough voice before bussing a kiss across her cheek.

“It’s about damn time too!” she snapped, turning sideways so that Rowe could see the little girl dressed in a pink coat and a little knit panda hat covering her vulnerable ears. “Your niece has missed meeting you.”

Wide blue eyes met Rowe’s and she giggled.

Rowe cleared his throat twice before he could finally speak. “It’s good to meet you, Melody Rose.” He reached out a trembling hand and carefully rubbed a knuckle against her chubby cheek. “She’s gorgeous.”

Gretchen snorted. “Of course. She’s mine.”

Rowe’s smile returned and some of the weight on his chest eased. He hadn’t meant to stay away for so long, but Melody had been born not long after Mel’s death and he just couldn’t bring himself to go see her, see any of his wife’s family.

“And big. She’s going to be a terror, just like her mother, I’m sure.”

“You know you’re still family, right?” Gretchen asked, her voice serious for the first time since he’d joined her. Of course she wasn’t going to let him off the hook with some light banter and meaningless small talk. “Just because Mel is gone doesn’t mean you escape our crazy family. I know you’re tight with your boys, but you’re stuck with us…even when you get remarried.”

There was no stopping the chuckle. He’d always thought that Mel was a force to be reckoned with, but her sister was even worse. That hadn’t been an if. She fully expected Rowe to marry again.

Lucas Vallois leaned over the waist-high wall and surveyed the first floor of his favorite club, pride sending a welcome stream of warmth through him. People were crammed into every available space, gyrating to the music the guest DJ played while six bartenders expertly crafted unique drinks and cracked open beers with speed and finesse. Low and intimate lighting created secluded areas for stolen moments.

He smirked. Maybe not low and intimate enough because he could see bare skin from here—not that he minded. But it was surprising considering the temperature in those corners.

A different world existed on the second floor.

Lucas turned and settled across from his assistant on the supple black leather sofas. They were cool to the touch thanks to the steady stream of frigid air being pumped in from the air conditioning vents. Fall had settled into Cincinnati and the surrounding river valley, but the crisp, evening temperatures outside couldn’t cut the body heat that tried to lift the temperature inside the building toward triple digits. But even without that, Lucas demanded that the air remain cool and sharp inside the nightclub.

How could you expect anything less at a place called Shiver?

Lucas leaned forward and picked up one of the glasses. Taking a sip of water, he kept his eyes locked on the petite blond with the wide blue eyes seated across from him. She’d begun adding smart, matching coats to her business suits when they’d started meeting here more. Though heat rose, the upstairs couldn’t compete with the amount of grinding, crowded bodies below. Candace’s hands flew before her as she signed a list of updates regarding business contracts, negotiations, and other interests he had brewing. He nodded, making mental notes of where he would need to follow up the next day.

When the music changed, a swift jab of annoyance made him frown. Candace’s fingers instantly halted, but Lucas shook his head once, indicating that his frown wasn’t due to anything she had signed.

God, he hated trance. It all sounded the fucking same. Clean, sterile, lifeless, and digital. What happened to the days of Trent Reznor’s raw voice and screaming guitar hammering against the walls? Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM, Thrill Kill Kult, Skinny Puppy, and Front 242 echoed through some of his more pleasant memories, but it seemed as if they didn’t have a place now. Of course, whenever he brought it up to one of his friends, they would snicker and mock him about being old.

Restless, he returned his glass to the table, pushed to his feet, then motioned for Candace to halt before he walked back to the half wall. Shiver had been open for more than a year and it was still packed every night it was open. Of the three nightclubs he owned, it was the most popular and his most successful. Bodies writhed in dance and alcohol flowed in a constant stream of lovely profit. Guest DJs fought for spots on his calendar and celebrities made regular appearances. It was the place to see and be seen in Cincinnati.

But Shiver would probably be closing in a year. If he was lucky, maybe two. People followed trends like lemmings scurrying for the cliffs. And what was hot now, wouldn’t be hot in a few years. Nightclubs—the truly profitable ones—never stayed on top for more than a few years at best. Lucas had learned to close his clubs as sales started to dip, timing it so that a newer, more exclusive one was opening up at the same time.

Shiver was his favorite. The sleek, modern atmosphere made an impact and Lucas loved making an impact.

Candace rose and stepped up to the wall in his peripheral vision, but she waited for him to turn toward her. Lucas let her stand there as his gaze slipped over the two bars and dance floor that were visible. Shiver wasn’t at capacity yet, but it was close.

He turned his gaze on his assistant and she immediately started signing, her long, delicate fingers flying through the air. The sleeves of her slim, red coat flapped around her wrists.

“Table service is booked for tonight and all weekend,” she reported. “The whiskey distributor has agreed to our terms. We will have the new contract on Monday.”

Lucas nodded and she immediately stepped back, indicating that she had nothing else to say. Some of the tension eased from his shoulders. It had taken him six tries to find an assistant who could keep up with him, and Candace had come with an added bonus: she knew sign language. It proved to be an excellent opportunity to pick up fluency in a fourth language. Three nights a week, Lucas surveyed each of his clubs and he refused to shout instructions over the pounding music until he was hoarse. He also would not be shouted at in his own club. Of course, most of the bar staff wrongly believed he was deaf, but that was fine. It kept him unapproachable.
