I betrayed his trust, shattered his loyalty, and broke his already broken heart.

What the hell was I thinking—no, what the hell was he thinking?

He never should have trusted me. He never should have taken me. He should have just killed me, the same way he did Toni, because being dead would be a hell of a lot easier than what I now realize is being brokenhearted.

He was once the monster in the dark—the man who haunted my dreams and stole my happiness. He was once a man I loathed—someone I would never be able to forgive.

That’s what I thought.

But the man who was once a monster in the dark has become everything I’ve ever wanted. He has become the only ray of sunshine I have—my only hope. He is the one who restored me—the one who showed me what I am capable of, and who I really am.

He is the only reason I still wish to live.

Without him, I may as well be back in that shed again—chained. Broken. Beaten. Starved.

Without him, I may as well be dead.

1

DRACO

I have been disappointed by a lot of people.

I have been fucked over and cheated. Beaten and disrespected. I have seen things—things that have haunted me, turning my dreams into vicious nightmares.

I have seen blood and gore. I have seen my own father cut off a man’s arm with a chainsaw in our cellar, and despite all the brutality I have witnessed, I have never wavered. Never flinched. Never cared about those people.

But this…this is something that I will not be able to accept.

I feel her looking at me.

I hear her sniffling.

I can’t even fucking look at her.

The van runs over a pothole, shifting me over, closer to her. She grabs my hand. I pull away.

“Draco,” she pleads.

“Shut up. No talking,” one of the putos in the front seat commands. I want to break his fucking neck for speaking that way to her—to me. He has a black handgun pointed at my face. If my head weren’t spinning so much, my fingers so numb, I would snatch it away and shove it down his goddamn throat.

“Draco,” she whispers.

I keep my eyes ahead, jaw flexing.

The van finally begins to slow down, and I look out the window. The church is a few yards away, my men already lined up, armed, and waiting. They lift their guns as soon as they see the van coming their direction, ready to fire if necessary.

The driver parks and the man in the passenger seat pushes his door open and steps out. With a smirk on his lips, he walks to the side of the van, pulling the back door open.

“Take your feisty little bitch, and get the fuck out of here,” he snarls at me when I step out.

I glare at him. Cold. Hard. His neck is right there. His throat. One grip and squeeze and I could end his fucking life.

His throat bobs when he notices I’m staring at it, a clear sign of fear, weakness. I hate weak motherfuckers that can’t back themselves up.

“Watch your fucking mouth before I punch you in it,” Patanza speaks from behind him, pointing a gun at the back of his head.

Several men in the trucks behind the van step closer, holding their guns high, aiming at us. I keep my eyes on the guard, el hijo de puta in front of me, and then I finally blink, lifting a hand in the air, a silent command for Patanza to stand down.

“Help her to the car,” I order. I don’t even recognize my own voice. The icy chill to it, the dry, gruff timbre.

Patanza hurries for Gianna, grabbing her elbow, nearly dragging her to the truck. When she’s secured, and the door is shut, I fix my eyes on the guard again, taking a step closer, eyeing him even harder now.

“You may feel proud now, about what you think you and your cunt boss have accomplished, but don’t you ever forget who the fuck I am.”

He steps away, trying to laugh it off, but I see the panic in his eyes. He watches his back as he climbs back into the van, ordering the driver to hurry up and go.

I watch every single vehicle leave. I know at least one of them will linger. One of them will pretend to go, but wait somewhere to try and follow me back to my mansion.

I’m not fucking having it, so I wait.

They continue down the road, a trail of dirt and dust curling behind them.

When I snap my fingers, boots instantly crunch on the ground. My gaze is still ahead, still watching the vans drive away.

Four loud whistles zip past my ears, shooting through the air like cannons.

Then there’s fire.

So much fire.

It billows, the way my trucks did when they attacked me by the Blue Betrayals. It’s fierce and strong, like my anger in this very moment. The explosion makes the church bell ring, a small chime resonating deep in my bones.
What am I doing? How the hell do I get out?

I can’t block out the sounds in my head—the noise that deafens me, the feelings that scald me deep inside.

Panting. Grunting.

Hissing. Sighing.

Heavy sweat. Screams.

Tears blinding me.

I jolt awake, panting raggedly, my spine stacked straight. I stare across the large bedroom. The door is still shut and locked. None of the lights are on. I’m still here. In Draco’s bedroom.

My heart thunders, and I swallow the dry, gravelly lump in my throat. I realize I’m clutching the sheets, sticky sweat built up on the back of my neck.

I look toward the alarm clock. 6:02 p.m. He’s still not here. It’s been hours. Where in the hell is he? He said he would be right back.

When my panting ceases, visions of the axe tattoo blind me, and I press the palms of my hands into my eye sockets, rubbing roughly in hopes that it will suppress the memories. My breathing becomes ragged, heavy, a chill shooting down my spine.

My body is filled with anxiety; my stomach has been flipped upside down. Even if I wanted to eat, I wouldn’t be able to. I was ready for revenge before, but now . . . now I’m just out of it. I blame it on whatever pills Draco had Juanita bring me.

They’ve made me groggy. Distant.

I push out of the bed and walk to the window. The sun has set now, half a golden disk perched atop the horizon. The sky is filled with splashes of pink and lavender and a slight trace of orange.

The sapphire water shimmers, and I hear seagulls squawking. I lift my hand and unlock the window, pushing it open so I can take in a draft of the warmth. I inhale the salty air, and then exhale through parted lips.

The sound of the large waves running up to the shore relaxes me.

I keep the window open and walk back to bed, sitting on the edge. The breeze is cool enough to chill the heated parts of me. Looking up, I point my line of sight on the wall to my right.

It caught my attention when I first laid down.

It’s a weapon wall, swathed in burgundy fabric and bordered in black.

There is the machete Draco used on Axe Man, and it makes me cringe inside, seeing it there. It still has blood on the sharp, silver blade, but not much.

There are his gold brass knuckles, a few pocketknives, a butcher knife, and a gun.

The gun is what catches my attention most. I push off the bed again and walk to the wall, picking up the heavy silver gun. It has a wide barrel. It could probably leave a wound the size of a golf ball.

I pull the revolver open and check it. There are no bullets. Damn it.

I run my fingers over the black handle, but that’s when I see the initials carved into it.

CEM.

I don’t know what the letters stand for. It’s probably another one of his prizes.

Footsteps start up moments later and I stick the gun back in its place, stepping back. The doorknob jiggles, and my eyes stretch wide, sharp fingernails digging into my palms.

It might be Bain . . . or Francesca. He’s not here, but they could be.

“Unlock the door, Gianna,” Draco orders from the other side. His voice sends a signal to my brain. My mind sparks, my heart drumming. Relief.

I rush to the door and unlock it, stepping away just as rapidly as he walks in.

“Where were you?” I snap at him.

“Busy.”

“Doing what?” I fold my arms tightly.

“Handling things.”

“For ten hours? You said you’d be right back.”

“And I am back. I didn’t tell you exactly how long I’d be.”

I sigh, roughly raking my fingers through my hair and then turning. “I want to know what you meant earlier. You said we have stuff to talk about, so tell me. I need to know everything if I’m going to accept you, and this. I don’t want to be left out of the loop anymore.”

He looks me over, taking note of my shaky hands as they fall at my sides. “You need rest, Gianna. Relax.”

“No,” I respond rapidly, and my voice is sharp, strained. “No—I’ve had enough rest. I’m tired of stalling, Draco. I’m a grown woman. Don’t treat me like some clueless child.”

“You’re angry. I get it.” His voice is too calm and hearing it pisses me off. “If you sleep, I will tell you in the morning,” he says, stepping forward. I know he’s lying.

I snatch my gaze away, pointing it at the weapons wall. “I can’t sleep. I—I keep waking up. Having these fucking nightmares. I can’t get rid of them, even if I try to think of something good before falling asleep.”

I don’t look his way, but I feel him watching me. After several silent seconds tick by, he walks to the wide dresser against the wall, pulls out a white pill bottle from the top drawer and then comes back in my direction.
She’s ugly.” The boy gripped the sill of the window, looking into the room where the girl with brown pigtails sat. She was sitting on the bench with headphones on, writing in a composition journal.

He could tell she wasn’t doing whatever work she was really supposed to be doing. She was making up her own words, smiling during the process. He wondered if she was writing a story or a poem.

“She is not,” his mother said, sitting down in the chair behind her. They had just arrived at the private gun range owned by one of the family’s closest colleagues. She had a Lifestyle magazine on her lap, her dark brown hair pinned up. She sighed. “She’s a very lovely girl,” his mother continued in Spanish.

“She’s not that pretty,” he argued.

“So why are you staring at her?” his mother mused, smirking as she flipped open her magazine.

The boy thought on the question. He didn’t know why he was staring. He supposed he couldn’t help himself and he hated that idea, so he jerked his line of sight away and looked at his mother. “She’s probably full of herself,” he mumbled.

His mother sighed and picked up her magazine, simply ignoring his banter.

He turned halfway and watched the girl carefully for a few minutes. He couldn’t figure out how she just sat there in one spot and wrote. He knew she was younger than him. He had the urge to brag about that in her face. Being older always had its perks.

“When is Papa going to be done?” he asked.

“Soon, hijo,” his mom murmured.

He released a heavy breath. “I’m bored. Can I go in and help him?”

The sound of gunshots ricocheted off the walls and his mother lowered her magazine to look through the square window. She could see her husband from where she sat—a tall man, middle-aged with a tan fedora and a Brazilian cigar clamped between his teeth.

He was speaking to another man that was much taller. Unlike her husband, this man was slender, with a sharper nose and angled jaw. His hair was turning gray at the temples, his face serious as he adjusted the ear muffs and lifted a gun in the air to aim.

The man shot at one of the posters and hit it right on target. Right through the poster’s chest.

The woman sighed as she watched her husband do the same.

“No. You don’t need to go in there right now,” she answered in her native tongue.

“Mom!” he groaned.

As soon as he started to come her way to beg, the door swung open and the tall man that was standing with his father walked into the lobby. He had pale skin and bright green eyes.

His eyes darted over to the boy and he put on a welcoming smile, shutting the door behind him and lowering his soundproof earmuffs.

“What the hell are you still doing out here? You’re supposed to be in there with your Papá and me, practicing your aim.” The man looked at his mother but the mother blew a heavy breath and stood.

“Did he put you up to this? Because he knows I don’t like to tell you no?” An assertive hand went to her hip.

The man smirked. “He may have.”

“Lion, don’t you think he’s too young? He’s only sixteen.” She looked truly worried, her eyes growing wide and anxious. She knew she couldn’t tell Lion no. Well, she could, but she hated to after all he’d done for her and her husband. He’d blessed them in many ways—ways they couldn’t repay with money alone.

“Are you kidding? This is the perfect age, Valeria. He has to learn early. It’s the only way he’ll know how to defend himself later. We don’t want our kids to be wimps. We want them strong and ready.” Lion lightly capped one of her shoulders. “Look, he’ll do one round and that’s it. He isn’t a boy anymore. He’s turning into a man, and he has to learn how we do things.”

“Right.” Her lips pressed, almost defeated. She looked towards her son and watched as he clasped his hands and begged.

“Please, Mom. Pleasseeeee,” the boy pleaded. “I have to learn. Mr. Lion is right. I’m the one who has to take over one day.”

His mother swallowed hard.

“Fine.” As soon as she said that, he dashed for the door but Lion caught him by the back collar of his Polo shirt. “But be careful!” she shouted in Spanish.

Reeling him back, Lion locked his arm around the boy’s chest and then handed him the soundproof earmuffs. “Rule number one: always cover your fucking ears.”

The boy looked up and Lion cocked a stern brow. “Right,” the boy laughed and accepted the earmuffs.

“You don’t want to go deaf, do you?”

“No, sir.”

Lion threw an arm over the boy’s shoulder and then turned around with him, nodding once at his mother before walking through the door. Though worried, his mother trusted Lion. Lion was a great man. Brave and smart and helpful. She knew her son was in good hands.
