Cole loves the city. He loves the noise, chaos, and having tacos delivered at 2 a.m.
He loves his job at Ward Security. He might look like a bodyguard, but there’s nothing better than being counted as one of the hacking tech triplets.
There is no way he will ever love horses, cows, and the great wide open of Texas.
At least, that’s what he thought until JB Alexander rode into his life.
He can’t deny the burning attraction of JB’s easy smile and weird sense of humor.
And while they’re dodging gun shots, crazy neighbors, meddling family, and secret plots, Cole might be forced to admit that he’s found an even greater love.
Wicked Outlaw is the sixth full-length novel in the Ward Security series and is jam packed with crazy neighbors, wild gun shots, a horse named Dopey, llamas, code names, a bisexual awakening, and new beginnings.

Cole tried to smile at the woman sitting opposite him, tried to follow what she was saying about her daughter. She’d already shown him some pictures of the eight-year-old. The tiny blonde nymph was adorable, but he couldn’t focus on what the woman was saying. He was too aware of the people crowding the restaurant, making any quick exit a difficult thing.

He should never have agreed to this.

Or maybe he should have had Rowe pick a different location. The last thing he wanted to do was cause trouble in Rialto. The restaurant hummed with customers, and the tables were closer together than he liked. The dim lighting and flickering candles created a romantic atmosphere he just wasn’t feeling.

“You haven’t done this in a while, have you?” Monique murmured.

Cole’s gaze snapped up to her face. “Excuse me?” He reached for his glass of water. It was on the tip of his tongue to tell her that he never did this, that he was an IT specialist and this was completely out of his comfort zone, but she continued before he could speak.

“Date. You haven’t been on a date in a while.”

“Oh.” Cole blinked at her and nervously touched his tie as if to straighten it but stopped himself at the last second. “No. I don’t go out much. I tend to work a lot of hours.”

Monique’s smile grew a little wider, a little sweeter. Her blue eyes watched him with an amused warmth. “I get it. With everything going on, I’m not up for dating yet. I’d much rather spend my time with my daughter than going out.” She bit her bottom lip for a second and continued. “However, if you’re ever in the mood to get out there again, I do have a girlfriend who would be fantastic for you. She’s a lot of fun and very sweet.”

“Well, this has got to be a first.” Rowe’s low chuckle came through loud and clear in the earwig Cole was wearing. “Cole’s date is trying to fix him up with some other chick. Man, this is striking out on a whole new level.”

Cole barely resisted the urge to roll his eyes. He didn’t want Monique asking why he’d made such an expression. She couldn’t hear Rowe since they’d not bothered to set her up with an earwig.

This wasn’t a date.

While Monique was beautiful in one of those rich, flawless ways with her waterfall of smooth blonde hair, delicate features, and expensive clothes, she was not his type.

Not that he thought he had a particular type. He liked women who were…well, women who didn’t mind that he was quiet and reserved. Who didn’t expect him to fill silences with lots of useless chatter. He liked independent women who felt real.

Monique was definitely real. She looked too perfect, too flawless to actually to be the kind of real that would be interested in him.

Of course, none of this mattered. This wasn’t a date. It was a sting operation, and Cole was the bait.

How he’d let Rowe talk him into this nonsense was beyond him.

No, that wasn’t true at all.

Rowe had taken one look at him and explained that Monique was newly divorced from a rich and powerful man who liked to abuse her. Now the man was trying to take away custody of her daughter. The bastard had been trying to scare Monique into giving up custody by threatening her life.

Cole had been only too happy to offer his help to trap the asshole.

He just hadn’t realized that helping meant posing as the woman’s new boyfriend.

Normally, one of the Ward Security bodyguards would have stepped into the role, but most of the guys were already on assignments, and the ones who were available were needed to serve as backup in case the whole operation went south.

This was supposed to be simple: Go to dinner with Monique in a very public place. Be sweet and attentive. And leave it to the spies the bastard had following Monique to report that his ex-wife was on a date.

He should be grateful Monique was a nice person. She seemed sweet and kind. Definitely not someone who deserved to deal with this kind of shit.

“Thank you,” Cole murmured. He was inwardly happy when the server returned to take away their plates. Neither one of them had eaten much. Nerves twisted up his stomach, and Monique couldn’t be in much better shape.

“Would either of you care for dessert?” the server inquired.

They looked at each other, neither seeming particularly excited about extending things a second longer. Cole opened his mouth to turn it down, which was a real shame. He loved dessert. Well, he loved anything that was served at Rialto. Owner and head chef Ian Banner had acquired the best cooks and pastry chefs in the entire city.
Bodyguard Seth Dorgan wanted a quick hook-up before attending his friend’s wedding.
What he got was a bone-melting night of pleasure with Liam, the sexiest man he’s ever met.
It was a shame they couldn’t have more time.
Seth’s wish turns into a nightmare at the wedding when he discovers Liam is his friend’s older brother. But they can avoid each other, right?
Nope. A loan shark is threatening Liam’s life and new floral shop. There’s only one place he can turn—Ward Security.
Seth is determined to keep Liam safe, but can he stop himself from falling for the sexy florist?
Seth is a 37,000-word Ward Security stand-alone novella. It contains his best friend’s brother, meddling coworkers, age gap, dangerous goons, exotic flowers, tender touches, bodyguards, bullets, and sexy fun.

Books in Series:

Ward Security Series by Jocelynn Drake

Books by Author:

Jocelynn Drake Books

Rinda Elliott Books

Chapter One

Seth Dorgan leaned against the bar, waiting for the bartender to bring him the beer he’d ordered. His eyes skimmed over the people milling around the open area. He hadn’t been to this quiet spot in downtown Cincinnati in a bit—his last few bodyguard assignments had taken him across the country.

Soft, classic rock played from the speakers, and there were a few couples swaying to the music in an open corner just past the pool tables and dartboards.

The bartender returned with the full pint glass and an inviting smile on her ruby-red lips. She leaned an elbow on the bar, giving him a good view of her breasts as they strained against her low-cut top. Seth slid a few bills across the bar, hoping the healthy tip helped to soothe the unspoken rejection. The flirtation was flattering, but she was barking up the wrong tree with him.

Off the Square was a good, low-key place to have a few drinks, meet a few friends for laughs, or if he was in the mood, pick someone up for a night of simple fun.

Tonight, Seth was looking for a little fun. He needed the distraction. Tomorrow he was attending the long-anticipated wedding of his coworker Sven Larsen to his fiancé, Geoffrey Ralse.

Calling Geoffrey a handful was a massive understatement. The man had a mouth on him that wouldn’t quit. Seth imagined he was pretty mischievous, too.

But Sven adored the ground Geoffrey walked on, and seeing his friend so joyful always brought a smile to Seth’s lips. Sven was one of the best men he’d ever met.

Seth didn’t usually enjoy weddings, but it was hard to not get pulled into the excitement. Romance was shimmering in the air. And Sven was on top of the world.

Unfortunately, the love stuff was getting to him. He didn’t want to be alone, but he also didn’t want to head out with a bunch of friends for a wild night of drinking and insanity. A couple of beers and possibly an enjoyable hookup sounded like a better alternative.

With his glass in hand, Seth found an empty seat at a high-top table, giving him an excellent view of the bar. A perfect spot to peruse the room. It didn’t take long for his gaze to snag on the sexiest man.

Holy hell, he’s gorgeous.

Big didn’t come close to an accurate description. The blond man had to stand around six foot five or possibly taller, and he had the widest pair of shoulders. Seth didn’t really have a type he gravitated more to, but there were times when he really appreciated a large guy compared to his own five nine.

Plus, he had a good fifteen or more years on Seth.

Not a problem in Seth’s book. In fact, it was a big plus. There was something to be said for experience.

When Blondie looked up and caught Seth’s gaze, a smile stretched his lips, sending a swarm of butterflies into Seth’s gut. That was a good sign.

Picking up his beer, Seth slid out of his chair and walked a little closer to see if the blond would take the last few steps. Startling sensual awareness swept through Seth when the stranger walked right up to him.

Seth glanced down at the man’s hands. God, he had a thing for massive hands and veiny forearms, and this man had both. He suppressed a shiver, looked up, and got caught in a pair of hypnotic green eyes.

Something about the guy seemed vaguely familiar, but Seth had never met him before. He definitely would have remembered.

“I’m Seth,” he said, holding on to that gaze.

“Liam.”

Neither of them seemed to be able to look away from each other. Nerve endings practically vibrated with awareness, something he hadn’t enjoyed in so damn long.

“Want to grab that booth and talk?” Seth motioned with his pint glass toward an empty booth in a quiet corner of the bar.

Liam nodded. “Need another drink first?”

“I’m good.”

They slid into the seats across from each other and didn’t say anything for a few moments. Now that he was up close, he guessed it was more like twenty years separating him and Liam. There were sexy streaks of gray in his hair at the temples and in his trimmed beard. He had rough good looks, his face strong and square.

Seth took a sip of his beer and set it down. “I haven’t seen you before. You live near here?”

“I’m new to the area. Only been here a couple of months. I opened a flower shop in Over the Rhine.”

“You’re a florist?” Seth would not have guessed that in a million years.

Full lips turned up in a half smile that crinkled the laugh lines around his eyes. “I know. I don’t fit the stereotype.”

“Guess I never really thought about what a stereotypical florist would look like. But now I’m picturing you making flower arrangements.” He grinned because the image in his head was of big hands tending to delicate flowers. “I like it.”
Daniel Hendricks wants a vacation. Ward Security’s accountant and resident code breaker just needs a little R&R from the chaos and usual shenanigans of the office. But what was supposed to be a sexy vacation hook-up explodes in his face when he’s mistaken for a rogue secret agent.

Now he’s on the run with CIA agent Edward Raines from Bermuda to Barcelona to Paris as they try to find the secrets the real rogue was attempting to sell before another foreign spy does.

The chemistry between them is off the charts, but how is Daniel supposed to trust a man who had originally set out to kill him?
It was the perfect antidote to the sun beating down on his head. The sun he was enjoying more than he’d expected.

Bermuda in June held a dreamlike quality that made him feel as if he’d entered another world. Sparkling, white sand. Big, open sky. Crashing surf. And the scenery in between the two was a feast for the senses as well. Rocky outcroppings gave the view texture, and the green of the trees along the sides of the beach only added to the spectacular color.

Of course, a life spent behind a computer meant he was pale as hell, leaving him to slather on suntan lotion. The Fairmont Southampton hotel where he was staying for the next week rose up on the hill behind him with the bright greens of the golf course crossing in front of it.

Today, he was planning to do nothing more than sip the drink at his side, read the latest thriller from his favorite author, and people-watch from his lounge chair on the beach. Maybe in a day or two, he’d wander around the island and take in the sights, but for now, he wanted to do a whole lot of nothing but relax and soak up the rays.

It would be a nice break from his job at Ward Security where he worked as a forensic accountant. He loved his job and especially loved the place he worked, but he still didn’t totally feel like he fit in. Or he was just the perennial wallflower.

But that was the story of his life.

Too shy for his own good, Daniel felt like he was that random piece in search of the right puzzle.

Daniel knew he should feel used to being the outsider, but Ward Security only brought it into stark clarity because all his coworkers were so outgoing. They’d become their own tight-knit family. They tried to make him feel included, but Daniel’s insecurity and awkwardness kept him from joining in as much as he knew he should.

Even now, Quinn Lake was texting him for more pictures of Bermuda. One of Ward Security’s resident hackers, the poor guy spent even more time behind his computer than Daniel did. He admitted when Daniel mentioned his planned vacation that he never traveled, preferring to stick close to his ailing mother. But he loved to live vicariously through his constantly roaming coworkers.

Come on, Daniel! Gimme one more pic!

Smirking, Daniel grabbed his margarita and held it up so that the beach and surf were clear in the background when he snapped the picture. He sent the image, took another drink of his alcoholic beverage, and put it down on the little table beside him. He was just about to put his phone down as well when it pinged with another message.

A loud laugh jumped from his throat when he opened it to find Quinn had sent back a picture of him and Dominic Walsh. The hacker and the redheaded bodyguard were both glaring and flipping him the bird.

Dom says you need to find a man to go with that drink, Quinn texted a second later.

Daniel put his phone down without replying, but a smile still lingered on his lips. This vacation was not about finding a summer hookup. This was his chance to wind down and get his head on track. He’d been pulling long hours at Ward, and he’d looked forward to this vacation for a long time.

An hour later, he half dozed, lulled by the alcohol and sun, his book forgotten on his lap. A lounge chair next to his creaked, and Daniel could only assume that someone was stretching out in the sun. He didn’t even bother to open his eyes, was just grateful this newcomer didn’t come with chatty friends or screaming kids. Right then, there was only the sound of the crashing surf on the beach and the low, distant sound of music drifting from the nearby beach bar. This was heaven.

It wasn’t until he turned over that he cracked his eyes and caught a glimpse of the man next to him. His eyes flew open wide to take in all six and a half feet of the gorgeous creature. Blessed with broad shoulders, narrow waist and hips, the man was stunning. Black hair and a close-cropped beard gave his craggy face character. Daniel had always been a sucker for the rough-hewn look on a man, and this guy had rough down pat with his thin face, bladed cheekbones, and full lips. His arms looked like he could out bench-press the security agents at Ward Security. Black tattoos covered his left shoulder and upper arm in an almost-hypnotic design. He wore plain black swim trunks that came to only the tops of his thighs and looked as if they were painted onto his perfect form.
The employees of Ward Security have big plans for Valentine’s Day and they’ve laid down a wager that one of them will claim the title of “King of Romance” by the end of the holiday. But they will soon find that even the best laid plans can go terribly wrong.

Follow Sven, Quinn, Royce, and Dominic on their Valentine’s Day adventures. Are they worthy of the title of “King of Romance”?

Books in Series:

Ward Security Series by Jocelynn Drake

Books by Author:

Jocelynn Drake Books

Rinda Elliott Books

1

February 11

The rich scent of freshly brewed coffee filled Quinn’s workstation as he and several of his coworkers gathered for an early morning chat before they started their days. The office he shared with the rest of the Ward Security tech team had become the de facto meeting place each day. Most of the time they didn’t talk about anything important. Sometimes the conversation veered to current assignments or possible new tech, but they were just as likely to rip on each other about their favorite sports teams or dating blunders.

Today Sven, Dom, and Royce settled in the chairs set around the conference table near his desk. Gidget wouldn’t be in for another half hour, as she got her son off to school, and Cole was likely stretched out in his bed, unconscious, since he’d recently opted for the night shift. Dom wore his usual good cheer while sipping from his Mr. Rogers mug. Sven sat quietly, always the stoic one. Royce, with his scruffy black hair and beard, cradled his coffee right under his nose, looking like he’d been up all night. But the satisfied smile on his face proved he’d been up for good reasons.

“So, any big plans for Valentine’s Day?” Quinn asked. He drank his overly sweet brew and grimaced at the taste. Too much flavored creamer. He was out of his usual, so he’d used Gidget’s chocolate peppermint. Blech. It was time to restock.

“Marc has a meeting with a client in Hungary, and I offered to tag along. I’m sure he has something planned.” Royce set his coffee down, leaned back in his chair, and scrubbed his hands over his face. “I know what I plan to do.” He winked at Quinn.

“And that’s different than any other night, how?” Quinn teased.

“Like you have room to talk with that hickey peeking out from the neck of your T-shirt there.”

Heat filled Quinn’s cheeks, and he tugged on his collar. “Shane planned something for us and I have no idea what. Probably some big, romantic dinner out somewhere.”

His boyfriend had proved to be into romance so much more than Quinn had expected. When they first met, Shane had been adamant: no dating, no grand gestures, no anything that would lock him into something permanent. Shane had been all about being free and having fun. Quinn could feel a smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth. Shane had definitely changed his tune. The man was always doing small things to show him love, and Quinn ate them up.

But he hoped Shane didn’t have anything extravagant planned. Quinn was, and always would be, more of a homebody; an evening in with his man would be his choice. He did plan to pick up some of Shane’s favorite pastries from Rialto, a popular restaurant in downtown Cincinnati.

“I’ve got a huge night planned,” Dom announced as he put his feet up on the chair next to him and crossed his ankles. “I’m taking Abe on The Cincinnati Dinner Train, but don’t tell him.” Dom pointed at Quinn, narrowing his eyes at him. “I know you guys have lunch plans, and it’s a surprise.”

Quinn nodded. He had no intention of ruining Dom’s surprise. He did have lunch planned with Shane’s father—that day, in fact. He was still amused that his close friend had gotten together with what amounted to Quinn’s father-in-law.

He and Shane weren’t married, but they might as well be. This relationship was it for them.

But more than amusement, he was extremely pleased over the relationship Dom had with Abe. He’d never seen the older man so happy, and though it had taken Shane a little while to get used to the idea of his father with a man—and a much younger one to boot—Shane had come around once he’d seen what that love had done for his father. Abe was a new man.

Sven cleared his throat. “Well, I think I’m the king of romance when it comes to this group. I have a highly amorous evening planned…of babysitting.” His massive frame shook with laughter. “We’re giving my sister a night with her husband and watching little Reuben. I can’t wait.”

“Preparing for the future?” Royce asked, lifting one dark eyebrow at the massive bodyguard next to him.

Sven shrugged. “Of course.”

Royce shuddered and took another sip of his coffee. “The thought of a little Geoffrey is terrifying.”

Dom’s nod and wide eyes were in agreement. “Beyond terrifying.”

Sven’s much smaller, high-maintenance boyfriend was a handful with his perky personality and smart mouth. At least he’d reduced his massive social media presence. Well, sort of. Quinn had to admit that he still followed a couple of Geoffrey’s accounts for his humorous updates on his dating life with his mountainous boyfriend.

“I don’t find that idea terrifying at all.” Sven’s easygoing personality fit so perfectly with the more difficult Geoffrey, it was uncanny.
Someone is trying to kill Marc Foster.
Attempted poisoning was bad enough, but when the would-be killer messes with the brakes on Marc’s precious Porsche, the art dealer admits he needs help. He just wasn’t expecting help to be quite so dark and sexy.
Royce Karras loves his job at Ward Security. He’s making up for a lifetime of bad decisions and a bloody past he’d rather forget. But Marc isn’t the spoiled rich boy he thought he’d be protecting. Sticking close to Marc as his “boyfriend” gives Royce insight into his toxic family, but it also reveals a brilliant, compassionate man who completely disarms Royce. Against his better judgment, Royce finds himself falling.
But can they find a way to make it work when Royce’s past threatens to tear their lives apart? Their futures hinges on a lost Renaissance painting, six Bichon Frises, and a pornographic Robin Hood.
He was running so late, he wouldn’t be able to stop for breakfast before he had to meet with his newest client. Six months of playing cat and mouse with a skittish artist was not going to be derailed because he was freaking starving.

But after the latest incident, he was struggling to eat anything in his kitchen. He stubbornly told himself that it was all safe, but his stomach wasn’t buying it. The end result was that he now suffered from shakiness and hunger at odd times because he’d not adjusted his schedule to accommodate his new food issues.

Groaning, he slapped the button for the garage door opener and stalked over to his new Porsche 911. The gunmetal gray car matched the overcast sky and his mood. He needed to come up with a solution to his problem. It was becoming a nuisance, but the few solutions that crossed his mind felt worse than a little accidental poisoning. And for now, he needed to focus on the new client.

He climbed into the sports car and tossed his tablet into the empty passenger seat. The engine rumbled to life with a feral growl, and some of the tension eased from Marc’s shoulders. He really did love the Porsche. Probably too much. He didn’t indulge himself too often. Massive purchases and trips were always with an eye for investment growth or business growth. But he’d taken one look at this beautiful little girl on his last trip to Milan, and he’d instantly fallen in love. Driving it had been even more addictive than he’d expected.

Before the nagging voice of doubt started to whisper in his ear, he shifted the car into reverse and pulled out of the garage. He quickly tapped the door opener as soon as he was clear and deftly maneuvered the car to head down the winding drive.

The tires had barely hit the street when a call rang in through the Bluetooth connection to the speakers. Glancing over at the display, he saw his sister’s name and frowned, but he still tapped a button to answer the call.

“Have you left?” she asked in place of a greeting.

“I just pulled out. I thought you were already downtown. I don’t have time to turn around—I’m running late.” His sister had moved into the guest house at the far end of his property after her divorce had been finalized. She had ample money to get her own place, but she’d been with the fucking bastard for nearly a decade before it came out that he’d gotten his mistress—his mistress of six years—pregnant. For Lilah, it wasn’t about starting new but having a safe place to figure out who she was after devoting years to a liar. Marc could at least do that for his older sister.

“No, I’m with Richard at his office. We wanted to know if you could meet us for lunch downtown. One o’clock at Salazar.”

Ugh. Lunch with his oldest brother was not a good time. He could only imagine that his siblings had decided he was in need of some new lecture about his life, his constant travel, or something else that was not their business. Lilah on her own was generally tolerable, but when she was with their older brother Richard or their other brother Gabriel, she instantly became more judgmental and bossy.

“Salazar is in OTR, not downtown,” he corrected, knowing he was being nitpicky. He didn’t want to go.

“OTR is still a part of downtown,” Richard added, proving that his sister had the phone on speaker.

Yeah, and there were plenty of Over-the-Rhine regulars who would argue that OTR was not part of downtown, but he wasn’t going to get into that with Richard.

“I’ve got a new client in town. I’m heading to a meeting with her right now, and I’m expecting it to last through lunch—possibly even dinner. I’m trying to convince her to use one of the studios I’ve set up in the city to work here for the next several months.”

Lilah’s extravagant sigh filled the car, and Marc rolled his eyes. He quickly drove along the winding road. The pavement was dry despite the heavy gray clouds looming overhead. It would be just his luck that the rain would start as soon as he parked in his spot downtown. He should have checked to make sure he’d tucked a spare umbrella in the trunk.

“I thought that was the whole reason you hired that gallery manager with the purple hair. To schmooze the clients.”

“Come on, Li. You know schmoozing is what Marc does best. Don’t take that from him.”

Marc gritted his teeth until he was sure one of his molars was going to crack under the pressure. Richard was a dick. He thought he was being funny, but almost everything that spilled out of his mouth reeked of condescension and pretentiousness.
Ten years ago, Dominic Walsh faked his own death. With no true identity, it wasn’t hard. But if he’d stayed, he would have been drawn further into a life he’d never chosen. He has friends and family at Ward Security now and has managed to escape his dark past. There is only one thing he truly wants.
Abraham Stephens.
When Dom was first tasked with watching over his friend’s father, he didn’t expect to fall so hard for the gorgeous silver fox. But Abe is interested in friendship only. He’s at a point in his life where he wants something permanent, not a romp with the sexy redhead who happens to be the same age as his son.
But Abe finds himself drawn deeper into Dom’s life when cryptic messages start appearing—ones that frighten the skilled security specialist. The more Dom tries to hide what’s happening, the more Abe wants to help him.
And maybe, just maybe, he’ll find a way to trust the strength of the bond Dom understood from the start.
Growing up, he’d loved action movies with lots of explosions, car chases, and brutal fistfights. He’d sneaked into tons of theaters, the darkness swallowing him up while a bigger, more exciting world flickered on the screen in front of him. It all seemed so much more glamorous and thrilling than anything he would be doing with his life.

The reality, he discovered, was a massive disappointment. This…was boring as fuck.

A major film production company had swept into Cincinnati to film some scenes for a new movie, and Ward Security had been hired to add an extra layer of protection for some of the actors. The local police and a second security company kept the fans and lookie-loos at bay. The situation became particularly dire when the lead actor started receiving death threats from a persistent stalker.

Dom was spending most of his time acting as Trent Elrige’s dark shadow. The guy was putting up an impressive front that he wasn’t scared shitless about the stalker. He had that perfect George Clooney smile, the dreamy Brad Pitt eyes, and the “I’m just a normal kind of guy” personality of Chris Pratt. But there had been a few moments when he’d forgotten that Dom was following him. He’d let his guard down and stared off into space, his hand shaking slightly at his side as if the world were crashing down on him.

Poor fucker.

Did he even know what normal was anymore? He left his trailer to hit the set, and fans would scream his name. He’d travel from the set to his hotel and people would scream, demanding an autograph or a selfie. Ward Security put a hard stop to all selfies until the stalker was caught. They were too dangerous.

So far, Trent was following all their rules, and it was a relief that he was at least taking the threat seriously. Of course, the intense schedule the guy was keeping with the shooting, interviews, and trying to make time for his fans while in addition having some private time, meant that Rowe was keeping them on a strict rotation. No bodyguard was allowed to put in more than eight hours shifts. He wanted his people to stay sharp.

Right now, Dom was on rotation with Sven and Garrett—two of his coworkers at Ward Security—which made him laugh. Somehow Sven had drawn the short stick and was on the third shift. He could imagine Sven’s boyfriend Geoffrey throwing a massive fit. He didn’t have his giant Viking to snuggle with at night, and Sven wasn’t allowed to get any pictures, autographs, or sneak Geoffrey in to meet Trent.

Of course, Sven likely found ways to distract Geoffrey from his poor mood. The sexy elfin blond might not be happy about this job, but his love for Sven would never waver. The two men were made for each other, and Dom couldn’t help but feel a little envious.

He’d done the partying and sleeping around thing for a while. He’d had his fun. Hell, he’d thought he’d be having that kind of fun for a few more years, but then Abe Stephens stepped into his life, and well…plans were meant to be changed.

Maybe.

Abe wasn’t giving him a whole hell of a lot to work with. They’d been texting for months. Met up for dinner a few times. Dom had been careful to keep it all casual and fun. But every time he mentioned maybe something more, Abe would shy away. He gave every sign that he was interested, but something was holding him back. Was it the age thing? Or that he was a guy?

Dom ran a hand over this face. He needed to focus on the job. Every time his mind drifted to something else, it was Abe who was dancing through his brain. If he fucked up this job, Rowe was going to skin him alive. Screw Rowe, he’d never forgive himself. He was good at protection. He just needed to focus.

“Girl trouble?” Trent’s deep voice broke into his thoughts.

Dom looked up at Trent who was standing next to the mini bar, grabbing two bottles of water from the tiny fridge. They were in a conference room on the second floor of a hotel downtown. Trent had been needed for filming for only a few hours in the morning. After a massage and lunch that consisted of a ridiculous amount of protein, they’d retired to the conference room for a series of interviews before Trent had to be back on the set that night.

“More like guy trouble,” Dom corrected him.

Trent stared at him, confused for a second, before understanding hit him like a bolt of lightning. His mouth bobbed once before he finally said, “I couldn’t tell. I mean—oh! No, I mean, that’s cool.”

Dom laughed loudly, rocking back on his heels. The poor guy’s face was so damn red with embarrassment. He’d never seen Trent Elrige fluster. The actor was smooth as silk with everyone he talked to; he made it seem like everything he did was intentional. Dom had just caught him so off guard that he couldn’t cover it.
When private investigator, Shane Stephens, is hired by the mayor of Cincinnati to track down the hacker who has been threatening him, Shane is sure this is the opportunity to launch the Merleau Detection Agency into the big time. He even convinces Rowe Ward of Ward Security to loan him one of his best IT specialists, Quinn Lake.

Shane, a man who prefers casual intimacy, is surprised by his attraction to the moody computer geek, but when Quinn suggests they have fun for the month he’s on loan, Shane happily agrees. Both men are expecting nothing more than a good time. But the investigation takes an unexpected turn and they quickly discover they are facing more than a hacker out to ruin the mayor’s re-election chances. And as they spend more time together, they realize their relationship may be a lot more than just a good time.
With only weeks until the election, Shane and Quinn race to gather the proof they need while dodging bullets and possibly…falling in love.

~The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas

Chapter One

“This is a really bad fucking idea.”

Shane Stephens pulled onto Terhune Alley and parked next to a section of broken chain link fence. He glanced up through the windshield at the full moon before looking at the snarled tangle of dark woods to his right and the empty baseball field to his left. A low fog crept along the ground, rolling across the turf in a smoky wave—an image that couldn’t fit the scenario any better.

“This is some Mike Hammer bullshit right here,” he muttered, referring to the famous hard-boiled detective in the pulp fiction series by Mickey Spillane. Late night, mysterious contact…like he’d stepped onto the set of a movie adaptation. He squinted in the dark, trying to catch signs of movement. “Twenty hours of training and even more kissing ass to get a firearm license might pay off tonight.”

Glad for the Glock he kept in an ankle holster, he stepped out of his car. Muffled traffic noises sounded from the highway on the other side of the dense thicket. Other than the occasional birdcall and barking dog, everything remained silent because with the incoming fall season, the nights had grown too cool for most insects.

He looked for the man who’d contacted him and refused to give his real name. “Call me Jacopo,” he’d rasped into the phone. Shane cracked a grin and rubbed a hand over his prickly jaw. The whole cloak-and-dagger thing was silly as hell when there were plenty of public places for them to meet. This empty back road in an unfamiliar part of Cincinnati, Ohio was taking it a bit too far.

Better be worth it.

He’d had to cancel a date with a hot bodybuilder tonight. One with tattoos from the neck down. Shane had been doing his best to count them while the guy worked out at the gym and he’d looked forward to discovering the rest. He’d also hoped to coax out some of those hot, grunting noises the man made while lifting weights.

Straightening his brown suede jacket, he leaned back against his car and waited, still pissed about missing the date. He’d been pulling long hours lately and hadn’t gotten laid in weeks. But he really couldn’t complain about the work.

When he’d started The Merleau Detection Agency with his friend, Ethan, they’d had no idea the business would take off the way it had. Especially since a lot of the investigative agencies in the area came with more security options, such as bodyguards.

Neither of them had wanted to compete with the popular Ward Security in that respect. The company had managed to pull itself back up after all the crazy nightclub fires and was now the leading source for personal security in the tri-state area and beyond. He liked Rowan Ward and found him to be honest yet irreverent—pretty cool, actually. And he welcomed the business the man threw his way when his clients needed more of an accounting approach.

Meeting someone in the dark of night was new. The life of a detective wasn’t nearly as glamorous as it seemed in shows and books. He’d gone dumpster diving only once for evidence, and that hadn’t been nearly as exciting as the pulp novels made it sound. He hadn’t even had to pull his gun yet, though he was grateful for that. Most of his time was still spent sitting at a computer. But at least it wasn’t all about numbers like it had been when he’d worked as an accountant.

“You came alone?”

Proud of not showing how much the voice startled him, Shane turned and narrowed his eyes into the flashlight aimed at his face. He raised his hand to try and block some of the glare. “Hey, back off. You’re blinding me.”

“Sorry.” Dropping the light, the man stepped forward.

Shane blinked, fighting to get his night vision back after it had been temporarily destroyed. When his eyes focused again, moonlight spilled across features younger than he’d expected. The guy was no more than a boy really, with round cheeks and innocent eyes. Maybe eighteen or nineteen, he still had areas of heavy acne on his cheeks and forehead. His thin body was hunched in, his arms crossed protectively over his chest. Light blond hair reflected brightly in the moonlight.

“I feel like I should be wearing a fedora and smoking,” Shane said, waving his arm toward the field. “What’s with the film noir setup?”

The kid didn’t answer for a few, long moments. His eyes kept darting around the area, searching for…something or someone. “Come on. I’ll feel better if we’re moving.” He headed toward the opening in the tall fence wrapping the baseball field.
The Ward Security Series is a spin-off of the Unbreakable Bonds Series.
Geoffrey Ralse is known for being the life of the party. He loves the club scene, hanging with his friends, and flirting with whomever catches his eye. He certainly isn’t going to stop living his life just because some would-be stalker starts sending him threats.
But it all changes when Geoffrey is drugged and wakes up half naked in his own home with a new message from his stalker. He needs help and there’s only one person he trusts…
Protective Agent Sven Larsen has been fighting Geoffrey’s flirtatious advances for months, even though he’s impossibly drawn to the man. There’s no way he can be around him twenty-four/seven and not finally crack. But one look at Geoffrey’s haunted eyes, and he knows there’s no way he’s letting Geoffrey walk out of Ward Security without him.
Even if it means breaking his own rules, he will keep Geoffrey safe.
Trigger warning: There is a very short section with sexual assault that some could find upsetting.

Not safe

You’ll regret it.

Geoffrey rolled his eyes and closed the messenger app. That was creepy and mildly threatening, but some amateurish stalker wasn’t going to keep him from hitting the clubs. It was Friday fucking night and he’d been cooped up in his office all week working on his next brilliant app. Okay, maybe it wasn’t going to top Matinee. Called the best hookup app on the market, Matinee had been little more than an experiment in coding, but it had been enough to firmly pop him into the young millionaires’ club when he sold it.

But this new app, his latest creation, was going to be great and truly help people. If he could get the fucker to finally…

He shoved that line of thought aside and checked his hair using the camera on his phone. He’d called a car to take him into downtown Cincinnati so that he could work his way through the clubs. Closing the app, he did one last pass through his social media platforms. He’d checked in already on Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat with his nearly three million followers, showing off his carefully selected Burberry button-down plaid shirt and snug-fitting Balmain skinny jeans. A smile tugged at his lips in response to a few of the comments while several of his acquaintances had already checked in, beckoning him to one club or another. He was going to drink and dance his ass off. And just maybe find a sexy hookup, particularly if he was faced with his smug ex, Brendon.

Dropping his head back against the leather seat, he closed his eyes and clenched his phone in his hand. His one attempt at a relationship and it was an utter disaster. He should have known he wasn’t meant to find that kind of happiness. Sure, he had lots of friends and laughs, but he wanted something permanent…something…well, something that was about more than getting off and buying expensive gifts to make people happy.

Ugh. This was not what he was supposed to be thinking about. This was supposed to be about partying and enjoying the fact that he was young and without a care in the world. Outside of his brother, who was at that moment traveling around Europe with a couple of friends as they celebrated their last summer before their final year of college, Geoffrey had no other family.

The car pulled up to the first club on his list, Trouble Maker, a trendy little bar that made great specialty vodka drinks—like the one it was named after—and had a fun vibe. This would pull him out of his funk and get the night off to the perfect start. Thanking the driver, he slid out of the car and shoved his phone into his back pocket, refusing to give his stalker another thought.

He barely got two steps inside when his eyes fell on his usual crew sitting around a circular high-top table. Patrick and Sean were huddled together over martinis while Todd sat opposite them, in trashy, see-through black mesh and without Will—meaning that the perpetually on-again, off-again couple were fighting. Todd was revenge partying and would be utterly smashed before they reached the second club of the night.

A loud squeal pierced the music and chatter a second before a set of thin arms wrapped around him from behind. Geoffrey jerked and twisted as best he could to see a head full of chestnut brown curls. The hugger released him and he was looking into a familiar heart-shaped face with bright blue eyes. Abby…Ashley…Annie…no, he was right the first time, Abby.

“There you are!” she squealed again, releasing him to bounce around and stand in front of him. “Pat said that you weren’t going to make it out tonight.”

“Pat is full of it,” Geoffrey muttered, rolling his eyes. He’d met Abby through their mutual friend Jonathan, but she’d quickly clung to him and started following him on social media so that she could tag along with his drinking because apparently, he was more fun than Jonathan and his friends. Abby wasn’t one of his favorite drinking partners, but he did have to agree with her assessment of Jonathan, who liked quiet, dark little bars with no dancing. Who gets laid in those places?

“Geo!” Patrick shouted when he got within a few feet of their table. He leaned over and grabbed the open chair between himself and Todd, positioning it so that Geoffrey was closer to him. Kody danced up to the table and grabbed another chair.

Geoffrey quickly made the rounds of hugs and cheek kisses before dropping into the chair. A second later, a server set a vodka and tonic water with three cucumber slices in front of him. It was his standard drink when he walked into Trouble Maker. He pressed a quick kiss to Shanna’s cheek and dropped a twenty on her tray. This was how you started a night—your favorite drink while surrounded by familiar faces.
