I’M THE WOLF BORN TO DESTROY HER PACK.
I’ve spent years building toward one goal—bringing down the pack that brainwashed my mother and ordered me dead. It’s my sole focus and I don’t get distracted.

Not when I have dreams of a woman with hair like starlight. Not when I discover she’s an Adalwulf who serves as pack Seeress, my sworn enemy.
Not until I’m alone in an elevator with her and she collapses against me, shaking with a vision only she can see. I wrap my arms around her and hold her through it. Give her a few moments of comfort and disappear before her guards ever see my face.

I should forget her. Instead, I hunt her.
When I learn the Adalwulfs have locked her in a tower—their own seeress, caged like a weapon they can’t control—I turn feral.
Her pack will call it war. She’ll call it kidnapping. My wolf calls it destiny.
Aster is mine.

Big Bad Betrayal is a stand-alone book in the Werewolves of Wall Street series. This enemies to lovers, rival packs inclusivity romance features a Deaf wolf shifter and his psychic fated mate. No cliffhanger, HEA guaranteed

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

Aster, 12 Years Old

Oma thinks I'm asleep, which is the only reason I hear her order a child’s murder.

As a seeress for the Adalwulf pack, I’m called to use my power for the good of the pack. But on this cold, dark night, I wish I could live as a normal girl. Then I wouldn’t be overhearing Oma, the seeress, plot with the high priest of the Moonborn, the Warden.

I’m curled up in an overstuffed armchair in her quarters, where I’d passed out with an aching head after she put me through a grueling afternoon and evening of training. I woke when the Warden entered, my body coming alert, wary in the presence of a predator, but pretended to be asleep, remaining still and keeping my breath slow.

I work hard to make myself invisible here in the Adalwulf castle. It helps me avoid verbal or physical abuse at the hands of Odin or Aiden. They hate anything they can’t control–and no one can control the Sight. Deep down, they fear and resent our witch-muddied bloodline, even though Oma and I are prized possessions as their pack’s veilwalkers–the Seeresses who can see beyond the veils of reality into the future.

“I had a vision,” Oma tells the Warden.

I can’t see him, but I can sense his aura. It’s grey and thick and oily like putrid smoke. In man form, he’s big and burly, a brutal enforcer. He’s always in war paint–his ice-blue eyes framed in a band of black. It’s supposed to evoke his wolf’s distinct markings. I think he looks like a raccoon. His long, white-blond hair worn with a drastic side-part, makes him look like a mad wizard. Right now, he’s probably taking Oma’s measure. Normally, she would offer her visions up directly to Odin, so the fact that she called the Warden in here and is speaking to him in hushed tones means there’s subterfuge going on.

My skin prickles with warning. Knowledge is power, and secrets are the most powerful of all. I learned that early in my seeress training.

“You need to kill the wolf without ears,” Oma murmurs.

“What did you see?” The Warden’s voice always sounds harsh. Cold and hungry for violence, never sated.

“It is not for you to interpret the visions,” Oma says in the authoritative voice she uses when working with the big egos of dangerous wolves. “I am the Seeress.”

“And I don’t take orders from you.” His voice is as cold as his eyes, and I have to stop myself from reflexively curling into a tighter ball.

I hear Oma pace around the small antechamber to her bedroom. Unlike the wolves who prowl this mansion, her movements are loud and uneven. We’re in the medieval stone behemoth built in the crook of the Adalwulf pack’s pine forest, nestled at the foot of a mountain beside a crystalline lake. There’s electricity and hot water, but Oma insists on living in the dark ages, lighting candles and using the fire for heat. She says fire contains magic, so we must keep it close.

I hear the sound of Oma’s teapot boiling, and she pours two cups of tea. The scent of lavender and lemon balm nips at my nose. She’s stalling. She always pours tea when she’s debating her next course of action.

Oma’s ancient–she won’t tell me exactly how old, but I think it’s over one hundred. She and Odin, the alpha of the Adalwulf pack, are magically bound by a powerful spell. Oma draws power from Odin’s body, giving her an unnaturally long life. By sharing in his alpha magic, all of her visions are of and for the pack’s well-being. She siphons some of his alpha power, as she did from his father before him. He will be the last alpha she serves, though. When he dies, so will she.
THE BIG BAD BULLY DOESN’T FALL FOR HIS PREY
Even if she smells like nutmeg, honey and sin.
Even if her chaos and color drips into your black-and-white discipline—and leaves it bleeding.
I was raised in a pack that worshipped bloodlines and power.
Humans were beneath us—soft, fragile, fleeting things.
Fine for entertainment. Never for mating.
Especially not for me, heir to one of the most ruthless alphas in the world.
So when my new alpha chooses a human bride, I grit my teeth and obey.
I’ll plan the wedding. I’ll tolerate their ridiculous customs.
But I won’t fall for her best friend—the loud-mouthed, paint-splattered activist who thinks I’m the villain in her revolution.
She calls me arrogant. Predatory. A corporate machine in designer suits.
She’s not wrong.
And yet, she’s always in my space. In my mind. Under my skin.
She stirs instincts I’ve fought to bury—possessive, primal, ruinous ones.
She thinks I’m the enemy.
But I’m not the danger in this story.
She is.
Because if I take what I want—
If I claim her the way my wolf demands—
I’ll break every rule I was raised to uphold.
And I won’t be sorry

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Aubrey

I hate billionaires.

No, I shouldn’t say that. My best friend is going to be one soon–either through inheritance or marriage. Probably both.

That’s a weirdness I still haven’t adjusted to.

But Madi aside, the entitled stench is everywhere on Wall Street. Especially here, in Sentience Labs, the AI company that has blatantly stolen the creative works of artists, musicians, and authors from around the world.

Which is why I’m going to do something about it. Tonight.

This is my third week camped out on the twenty-eighth floor of the Sentience building. Normally, my murals depict images of social justice and a call for change. Resistance. Freedom. I’m Brooklyn’s Diego Rivera. My Occupy Wall Street mural outside La Résistance, the Bohemian cafe where I work, has been photographed more than any other street art in the city.

I’m the last person anyone would expect to sell out to a corporation like Sentience. Especially one that disenfranchises artists everywhere.

But I threw my name in the hat with a cheesy flower landscape for a good reason.

An exceptional one.

The song “Karma Chameleon” pops up on the 80’s dance playlist piping through my earbuds, and I smirk to myself.

That’s right, Sentience. Karma is a fucking bitch.

“You staying late again?” The security guy stops behind my ladder to observe. He’s taken an unfortunate interest in me and my work. Maybe because he likes my art. Or maybe because he can sense I’m different from the soulless sharks that circle these waters. I’m life and color to the rest of the building’s hollow monotone.

Under ordinary circumstances, I might flirt. He’s six feet tall and gorgeous, with medium brown skin and a sexy Jamaican accent. Totally my type. But I’m trying to be forgettable. Especially tonight.

Move along, buddy. These aren’t the droids you’re looking for.

“Yeah. Just a few final touches,” I lie, flicking my wrist in quick, deft brushstrokes along one poppy. The truth is, I finished the mural two hours ago, and now I’m biding my time. I purposely don’t turn around or give him my attention, so he’ll move on.

He stays a few minutes longer then finally strolls away. I wait until I hear the elevator ding and move away before I turn off my music and pop an earbud out to listen.

All quiet.

To be sure, I take a trip to the bathroom to wash up, checking the lights under every door.

It’s eight at night. These execs usually leave by six, but I need to be sure.

I palm the keycard Jamie, our informant, gave me. She got fired two months ago after printing a copy of an email sent by an exec telling her that her concerns about the legitimacy of the data they were mining were unfounded.

Turns out, the creepers here are so Big Brother, they tracked that one “send to print,” and she had security guards at her office removing her–minus the printed email–before the end of the day. She showed up at the legal aid clinic, and Jan–my activist lawyer friend and the wife of the owner of La Résistance–took her case.

Since I was already plotting with Jan and her wife, Caroline, about how to bring Sentience down, she connected me with Jamie.

Now I just need to get my hands on those same kinds of emails and, hopefully, find the cache of pirated artists’ works, so Jan can file a lawsuit against them. Or maybe, we’ll bring the information to the New York Times and expose the hell out of these fuckers.

I use the stairs of the fire escape to get down to the tenth floor, where much of the data mining takes place. Jamie’s key card still works on that door, as she told me it would. My heart pounds as I slip through the door.

The lights are off, and it’s dark. Jamie told me there are no cameras on this floor because they don’t want any recordings of what they actually do here. I follow the map I memorized to get to Jamie’s old office. They’ve hired someone new to take her place, but Jamie had a spare key from when she lost her keys and then found them again. A very happy accident in this case.

I slide the key into the lock and turn it. I may be bold when it comes to civil protests, sit-ins, and the exercise of my free speech rights, but this is breaking the law. Tonight, I’m turning the corner into breaking and entering and outright stealing corporate documents. Jan would not approve, but if I don’t do this, Sentience will continue to steal from me and all the other artists, authors, and creatives they are putting out of business. Jamie tried to do something about it and was fired.

I can take this risk.

I slip inside the office without turning on a light. From the front pocket of my paint-splattered overalls, I pull the external drive I brought.

Rule #4 of Wall Keep your enemies close
The Vampire King wasn't on the invite list for our engagement party, but that won't stop him from demanding his due.
He insists Madi and I make an appearance at his club.
He wants a performance where we're the players.
I would refuse--war be damned, but my bride is intrigued.
And what she wants, she gets.

Mated is a bonus story from the completed Big Bad Boss trilogy featuring a billionaire boss-hole wolf shifter and his freakishly smart assistant.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Madi

My breasts flatten against the floor-to-ceiling windowpane in my office where I’m pinned by over two hundred and fifty pounds of solid muscle. Brick’s hand is between my legs, my skirt rucked up to my waist. I’m wearing thigh-highs, and his fingers are under the gusset of my panties, penetrating me.

“Brick!” I gasp.

“Not yet,” my former Big Bad Boss growls in my ear. “You don’t get to come until I come, Ms. Evans.” With his free hand, he slaps my ass. “I’ve been blue-balled all” –he spanks me again, “day” –his fingers arc inside me– “long” –he bites my neck– “thinking about you.”

If he keeps it up, I will come on the next thrust. “I fail…to see how that’s my fault.” My tone doesn’t match my words. It’s husky, and I’m out of breath.

“Sassy, I see.” Brick’s lips are right behind my ear. His warm breath feathers across my skin. He yanks down my panties. “I’m going to take care of my rather pressing need” –he allows me to feel the part of his anatomy he wants to press into me– “and then I’m going to consider what form of punishment your daily reprimand will take.” I hear the rustle of his pants and the sound of his zipper. “Now spread those legs, Ms. Evans.”

It’s a little hard with my panties around my thighs, so I shimmy my hips to drop them around my stilettos.

It doesn’t matter. Brick’s already losing control. He’s beyond noticing whether I complied with his order. He pulls my hips back to meet his thrust, impaling me in one swift motion.

I gasp. As always, it’s too rough, but perfectly delicious. I love how feral Brick gets, how desperate and dommy he becomes by the end of every day. I love knowing he needs to be inside me so badly he can’t wait until we get home. That he has to lock my office door, shove everything off my desk, and put his mouth between my legs before he can even think about driving me back to our penthouse.

Tonight is no exception. I had to stay late to prepare for a meeting with our French subsidiary tomorrow, so it’s 7:30 now. No one is left on the top floor where Eleanor and I run things.

Which is a good thing because if anyone were around, they would hear just how loudly Brick makes me scream when he’s this wound up.

He braces one hand against the windowpane beside my face and uses the other to hold my hips in place as he pounds into me. “I said, spread those legs, Ms. Evans.”

I guess he did notice.

I widen my stance, which makes my pelvis tip back more. Brick’s cock plunges in deeper, bottoming out against my G-spot.

“Brick!” I gasp.

“Don’t, Brick me, Madison Evans. I know you want to come. But what did I tell you?”

“I have…to wait,” I gasp. I’m already losing the ability to form sentences.

“That’s right.” He slams in harder.

“Oh God,” I moan.

“Take it, little human.”

“I…I can’t,” I sob. Of course, I can. I am. And it’s so good. But I’m getting desperate to come.

“If I’m too rough, it’s because my wolf wants something from you.”

My brain is really not computing. I don’t have any idea what Brick means.

But maybe it’s Brick who isn’t making sense because his thrusts grow wilder. He loses his rhythm and his breath.

The hand holding my hips in place shifts to the front.

Knowing what’s coming, the quakes begin in my legs. Pleasure blooms in my core.

“Do you know what he wants, Madison?” Brick’s fingers hover right above my clit. He taps it once. “He wants…”

Brick loses concentration. He sucks in a harsh breath and holds it. “Now,” he commands, plunging deep as he comes. He finally touches my clit, and I cry out, my orgasm full and powerful. My internal muscles pull Brick’s cock deeper.

Brick keeps rubbing my clit, wringing shiver after shiver from me, making my orgasm last longer than I would’ve thought humanly possible.

When it’s over, I can’t even stand. I sag back into Brick’s arms, and he scoops me up and carries me to my desk, where he sits in my chair with me cradled in his lap.

“He wants pups, Madi. My wolf wants pups.”

Brick

Madi’s dazed look sharpens on my face. “What?”

Fuck. I didn’t mean to bring up the pups thing. We already talked about it. She just started a new job running the largest cosmetics company in the world. The one she will likely inherit. She’s not ready to start a family.

I shake my head. “Just sex-talk, Windows. I didn’t mean it.”

She blinks. “But is it true? Your wolf wants to breed me?”

I scrub a hand over my face. “I don’t know if I’d put it that way.”

“Your wolf always seems to have new demands of me, doesn’t he? Please tell me you’re not going to go moon mad if I don’t get pregnant in the next six months.”
RULE #3 OF WALL NEVER BACK DOWN

No one can know I've claimed the human as my mate.

The enemies are at the gates–one wrong move and I’ll lose it all. My world will never be safe for her.

If my pack finds out that I’ve mated a human, they’ll revolt. The fractures will grow deeper than ever and we'll be picked apart one by one.

The lives of everyone I love hang in the balance.

Madison may bear my mark, but she isn’t content to remain my dirty little secret.

Now I must choose–love or my pack.

Either way, one will die.

Marked is book three in the Big Bad Boss trilogy. The books must be read in order. It features a billionaire boss-hole wolf shifter and his freakishly smart assistant.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

The Blackthroat king has a new weakness. She will destroy everything he desires.

–The Adalwulf Seeress

Aster

I gaze out the window at the crystalline lake. The Adalwulf mansion sits nestled at the foot of a mountain, in the crook of an old-growth pine forest. To most, this beautiful behemoth of a building is a historic wonder set in an evergreen paradise.

To me, it’s a prison.

Behind me, Oma sits bent in her chair, her eyes fixed on the crackling fire.

“Snow’s coming tonight,” she croaks.

Great. Snow is just what this giant, echo-y mansion needs. By this time tomorrow morning, this whole place will turn into a setting for The Shining.

Naw, Stephen King would think this place is too creepy. If I listen closely, I can hear the furious howls of the Adalwulf ancestors echoing off the mountains. Even someone not prone to visions would pick up on the creepy vibe.

I sense my soon-to-be Alpha’s approach before I hear his thundering footfalls on the ancient wood floors. Not even the priceless rugs can dampen Aiden’s stomps. The Adalwulf prince can move as soundlessly as a wolf when he wants to. He doesn’t want to today.

Something’s pissed him off.

Oma tilts her head, and I rise and open the door before Aiden can batter it down. “Welcome, Aiden.” I greet him with my eyes fixed on the floor. I've learned not to look the dominant wolf in the eye. I know the consequences of standing up to an alpha.

Whether or not my second cousin will be as cruel an alpha as my uncle remains to be seen.

Aiden sweeps by me without acknowledging my presence and heads to the window to overlook the lake, surveying the territory that will soon be his.

“He’s plotting something,” Aiden mutters to the glass, “I know he is.”

I don’t have to ask who Aiden is talking about. Brick Blackthroat is his nemesis. Our family, the Adalwulfs, struck a blow to the Blackthroat family business years ago. But Brick has defied the odds and built back everything they lost. And more.

I’d admire it if thinking well of a Blackthroat wasn’t treason here.

“How is my grandnephew?” Oma asks.

Aiden turns. “Father is doing well this morning.”

We can all hear the lie in his voice. But we don’t comment on it. When Odin dies, Aiden will lose his father, and we will lose our alpha. The driving force behind our pack.

“I need a vision,” Aiden says.

Oma cackles, showing her sharp incisors. “If only, great-grandnephew. Visions don’t come at my beck and call.”

“Insight, then.” Aiden paces in front of the window.

“I have seen nothing, but perhaps Aster can help you,” Oma says. Throwing me to the wolves as I knew she would. “She’s been having visions of the Blackthroat pack.”

Aiden turns the full force of his silver gaze on me. “Is this true?”

I swallow and take my place in the center of the carpet, head bowed. Aiden’s alpha presence is a power that thickens the air, making it hard for me to breathe.

“Yes, Aiden,” I murmur. “I’ve had a few dreams. A few blurred images and impressions. Not much.”

“Tell me.” His voice echoes with power. The command hooks into my belly, and the vision vomits forth.

“I’ve seen the Blackthroat alpha. He’s standing tall and proud, a captain at the helm of his ship.” I swallow, waiting for Aiden to start raging. Odin doesn’t believe in the phrase “don’t shoot the messenger.” The alpha wouldn’t hurt Oma, but I often wind up confined to my room with nothing but bread and water for weeks as punishment for the visions not showing me what Odin wanted to see.

Aiden is calmer than his father. Colder. He’s a patient hunter, standing perfectly still until his prey feels safe coming near. But once your guard is down, he rips out your throat.

“His pack is crumbling around him. Even his second in command stands to oppose him.”

“Do you know why?” Aiden sounds smug. He knows something.

I screw my eyes shut. Washed-out images appear in my mind’s eye, too fuzzy for me to see any details. I sense the powerful energy surrounding Brick Blackthroat and the top wolves in his pack. “There’s a change coming to his inner circle.” I tilt my head. There’s a light in the corner of my vision, a bright glow. It pulses, growing stronger. “A newcomer.” My voice takes on a new urgency. “Someone unexpected. Someone who will upset the balance of the pack–forever.”

My head buzzes as I let the images fade.

Oma sits back in her cozy armchair, a satisfied smile on her wrinkled face. “It’s as I foretold. The Blackthroat has a weakness. A female.”

“A mate?” Aiden’s eyes flash brighter.

“I believe so,” Oma says.

“Anything else you can tell me?”

“She’s not from the Blackthroat pack,” I offer.

“Are you sure?” Aiden snaps.

I touch my head where a throbbing pain has blossomed, filling my eye socket. “I’m sure.”
Rule #2 of Wall Never show weakness
An alpha must protect his pack. Weakness isn’t an option.
Neither is the beautiful human who turned my world upside down.
But she is my obsession, I won't let her go.
I’m feral with the need to possess her. To consume her.
Mating a human would destroy everything I've fought
My business, my pack, my family.
But I can't resist this forbidden attraction.
And if I don't claim her soon, I'll succumb to moon madness--
a fate worse than death.

Moon Mad is book two in the Big Bad Boss trilogy. The books must be read in order. It features a billionaire boss-hole wolf shifter and his freakishly smart assistant.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Chapter One

Madi

I trek through the woods, fresh snow crunching under my feet. The sun shines, refracting on the snow to make a billion tiny diamonds. I’m having a Dr. Zhivago moment, stunned by the beauty of the ice and nature-made snow sculptures all around me. I stop to investigate an icicle hanging from a tree, but a low growl makes me freeze.

I whirl to find I’m surrounded by a half-dozen giant wolves–snarling, angry, probably hungry wolves.

They advance on me slowly, their big paws sinking into the snow with each step. The largest one–the tan one with a black streak running from chin to chest leaps at me, and I scream–

I kick off the bedcovers.

A strong arm bands around me. “Hey,” a deep familiar voice reaches me, and the forest fades to a bedroom.

I jerk awake with a gasp.

“You okay?” Brick spoons me, his large body molded around mine.

“Oh my God.” I sit up, shoving my hair from my face. We’re in the guest room in the Berkshires. I can’t tell what time it is. “I dreamt wolves were chasing me in a snowstorm.”

Brick sits up, too, and I tug the sheet up to my armpits, suddenly aware I’m naked in a bed with my billionaire boss.

“Come here.” He hauls me into his lap, cradled sideways, my shoulders leaning back against one of his arms, my knees across his lap.

I’m shocked he wants to cuddle. Is this still a dream? I can’t seem to orient myself.

He tugs down the sheet and cups one of my breasts, like my body belongs to him. “I’m sorry about the wolves. And the blizzard. And for driving you out into it.”

I lift my brows. “Wow. Another apology? That’s two trophies I’m having made.”

He brushes a thumb across one of my nipples, and I relax into him at the sensual touch.

“Has anyone ever been attacked by wolves on your property before?”

“No. They don’t attack humans.”

“Oh, they were going to attack me.” The memory of the wolves surrounding me comes back, only now it’s muddled by the dream. Which one was real? I’m not usually so confused.

“Tell me what happened.” Brick is still toying with my nipple. There’s a familiarity between us like we’re long-time lovers.

“I was out in the blizzard. I thought I heard you calling me, so I tried to yell back, but my voice was giving out. I found a branch to bang against a tree to make noise.”

“That was good thinking.”

“Then suddenly, there were six wolves surrounding me, howling. One of them even came at me.”

Brick seems to stiffen. Finally he’s actually giving my experience some credence. “Came at you, how?”

“It came right up to me and almost sat on my foot.”

He relaxes. “That doesn’t sound aggressive, Windows. Was it showing you fangs? Growling?”

“Well, no.”

“What did it look like?”

“It was huge. Tan with black markings. It had a streak of black that ran from chin to chest.” I draw a line down my throat to show him.

Brick relaxes some more. “A female?”

“I don’t know. Are you familiar with these wolves?”

“Oh, I know them. That pack has been in these woods longer than any human.”

“And no one’s ever been eaten?”

“Never.” He sounds amused. Like me being afraid of wolves is a cute quirk of mine and not a legit danger. “It sounds to me like the wolf was trying to comfort you. Have you ever had a dog come and sit against your leg? It’s a sign of solidarity.”

I wrinkle my brow and give him a quick glance. “I don’t think so.” Now I’m not so sure. Was the wolf really going to attack me? Maybe I was confused.

Brick pinches my nipple and flips me onto my back. I’m instantly wet. Totally ready. “You don’t have to be afraid of the big, bad wolf.” He straddles my waist and pins my wrists to the bed as he nips the soft side of my breast.

I gasp and arch into him. “Just the Big, Bad Boss?”

“Definitely him.” He swirls his tongue around my nipple.

I grip his head, running my fingers through his hair. “Am I still in trouble?”

“So much.” His voice is gravelly with lust. “I’m going to fuck you into submission, Windows.”

I arch. “Won’t happen,” I choke, but my hips roll beneath him, seeking firm contact.

“The submission or the fucking?”

I spread my legs, and our hips line up. “Submission.”

I wake up on the edge of an orgasm. This time there’s no confusion. I’m not in bed with Brick Blackthroat in the Berkshires because I left there Thanksgiving night.

I’m horny, alone, and in my childhood bedroom at my mom’s place.

Apparently the dream within a dream was my subconscious working overtime to process what happened over Thanksgiving.

I’m sure part of the problem was the way I left.

After Thanksgiving dinner, I was expecting–or maybe just hoping for–another round with the Big Bad Boss. Instead, he disappeared outside with his buddies, and then Billy showed up to tell me that the weather had cleared, and John had readied the helicopter.
RULE #1 OF WALL STREET: DON'T FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR BILLIONAIRE BOSS.

I hate my new assistant.
I’ve hated them all, but this is a different kind of hate. Her presence is torture.
She’s whip-smart, overly-capable, the only employee of mine who dares talk back.
And the little human smells like temptation. The worst kind.
She dresses to kill, and I’m in danger of dying.
One of these days, she’s going to push me too far.
And she’s completely unprepared for what happens
when you unleash an alpha wolf on his quarry.

I hate my boss.
The Wall Street tycoon is a jerk. A world-class alpha-hole.
Devastatingly handsome but terribly flawed. He goes through assistants like I go through vanilla lattes, and I need this job. But I went to school with bullies like him, so I’m not afraid.
I hate my attraction to him. How sparks fly when we spar.
The way he barks orders and dresses me down.
I hate how I fantasize about him during and after work hours.
He’s danger wrapped up in power,
and he’s getting harder and harder to resist.

Midnight is book one in the Big Bad Boss trilogy. It features a billionaire boss-hole wolf shifter and his freakishly smart assistant.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

Prologue

Madi

Harvard wants me. Yale accepted me. Even my alma mater, Princeton, says they’ll have me back for graduate studies. I should be wrenching my shoulder to pat myself on the back.

I don’t know why I can’t get excited about any of it.

“You’re telling me you’re not sure you’re going to accept one of these offers?” Aubrey, my best friend, picks up the letter I just opened from Harvard and rattles it underneath my nose. We’re in the kitchen at my mom’s Jersey apartment where we pretty much grew up together. Latchkey apartment kids are as tight as family.

“I should,” I groan. “I know I should want this, but I just… don’t. I’m burnt out. I’m done with believing the lie that if I just keep my head down and study hard, I’ll eventually fit in with the one percent.”

“I think the minute you got that degree from Princeton, you became the one percent.”

I spread my hands around my mom’s small apartment, the one I had to move back into after I graduated last week. “Yep, living the dream, baby.”

“This must be another scholarship offer.” Aubrey tears open another envelope.

I glance at the envelope. “No, that’s Brayden’s.” My stomach tightens on behalf of my younger half-brother. He wasn’t able to attend a prep school like I did, which means he didn’t get into any Ivy League. He was accepted to NYU, but their financial aid package sucks, so he’s hoping for this scholarship.

“Oops. Well, it’s open now. Should we look?” Aubrey unfolds the letter without waiting for my reply. “Oh, damn.”

“What is it?” I snatch it from her to scan.

He didn’t get it. This was his last hope.

“Fuck.” I throw the letter down. I hate this. I hate that I had opportunities Brayden didn’t. I hate that he thinks he’s not as smart or not as capable as I am.

“Are you calling Brayden?” Aubrey asks when I whip out my cell phone.

“No. I’m calling my mom. I don’t want her to be disappointed in front of Brayden. He doesn’t need that added to his disappointment.”

My mom is an English teacher at the prep school I attended, and she’s teaching right now so I leave a message. “Hi, Mom. Brayden didn’t get the scholarship. I just wanted to give you a heads’ up so you can downplay it when he finds out. And…don’t worry. We will figure out a way for Brayden to go.” I glance at Aubrey as I realize I have the solution. “Give me a week. I’ll get his tuition figured out.”

When I end the call, Aubrey raises her brows. “How are you going to come up with that kind of money in a week?”

I square my shoulders. “I figure I need to make about ten thousand a month to cover his expenses. That’s doable.”

“How?”

“I’ll get a job.”

“No duh, Captain Obvious. I meant what sort of job? You have a sociology degree. I thought you wanted to be a social worker.”

“I still can be, once Brayden’s graduated.” I gnaw my lip. “Right now the only job that will pay me enough will be on…” I pause to prepare for Aubrey’s reaction. And also because I feel a bit queasy just saying it. “Wall Street.”

I fully expect her to pluck a brown banana from the fruit basket and lob it at me, but Aubrey props a hip against the kitchen island and nods slowly. “You could definitely get some kind of a job on Wall Street with your degree and contacts.”

“Would you still be my friend?”

She flashes a grin. “Actually, I’m all for it. I can definitely see this working out.” Her brown eyes sparkle with that wicked intensity that tells me she has another wild idea. Like the time she convinced me to dress up and go nightclubbing with fake IDs at age thirteen. Or ditch prep school to take a Greyhound to D.C. to protest the newly-elected president.

My brow furrows, trying to decipher the direction she’s headed with this. Aubrey is not the type to advise me to go climb a Wall Street ladder. I mean, this is the girl who dragged me to Occupy Wall Street protests way back in middle school. She wears t-shirts that say Eat the Rich and dreams of owning a tiny house in Vermont.

She’s my non-Ivy League friend who has a nose ring, paints murals, and works in a coffee shop as she finishes her degree in Women’s Studies at City College.

“Really?”

“Yes! Listen. This could be perfect. You should do this. You can quietly use it as your sociology research. Just think of the insight you could gather on the one percent. Or the book you could write! You’re exactly the kind of person who could topple empires. Exact true social change.”

I narrow my eyes. “How would my working on Wall Street exact true social change?”
