Grayson, a fellow Guardian, is standing in the doorway looking at me with a smug look on his face. He crosses his arms over his chest. "The Pres wants to see you."

"Fuck," I mutter. The last few weeks have been tense. Our club moved from Texas to this small town called Whiskey Run. We've been working hard trying to get everything in place, but tensions have been high. "What's he want?" I ask as I wipe my hands off on the rag hanging from my pocket.

Grayson just shrugs his shoulders. "I don't know. Did you fuck up or something?"

I think back to the last few days. Pres had warned us to lay low since we got here, and I've done exactly that. I haven't even visited the bar in town. As a matter of fact, the only thing I do when I leave the compound is go downtown to the Sugar Glaze Bakery. The other guys go for the pastries, but I go for Tara. I take a deep breath and shove past Grayson. "I guess I better go see what he wants. I'll be back."

I walk down the hallway and realize that Grayson is right behind me. I look over my shoulder. "What are you doing?"

Grayson just laughs. "There's no way I'm going to miss you getting an ass chewing." I flip him the bird and keep walking to the other side of the building where Pres' office and conference room is set up. I take a deep breath and knock on the open door. "Hey, Pres. You wanted to see me?"

"Get your ass in here."

I walk through the door, and Pres is standing next to his desk, his arms crossed over his chest. "Sit your ass down."

I do as he says. There's not a lot of people that I let tell me what to do, but Pres is one of them, mostly because I respect him. I sit down in the chair and wait. I know how Pres is when he gets into these moods; it's better to just wait it out and listen. He moves around to the other side of his desk and leans across it, his arms firmly planted on the desk that is now in front of him. "You got something you need to tell me?"

I think about it before I respond. But honestly, I wasn't lying to Grayson. I've kept my ass out of trouble since we got out to Whiskey Run, mostly because I've spent my time chasing Tara. "No, sir," I answer.

He nods like he expected me to answer that way. "Okay. Do you remember when we had church in Texas? What was said before we left there?"

I think back to the meeting where it was announced we were all moving to Tennessee. Some of the members, and definitely the prospects, were surprised by it, but I wasn't. I've been a part of the club for a while now, and I've learned to not let anything surprise me.

"Yeah, Pres. I remember the meeting," I answer.

He nods. "All right. Well then, you remember my one rule for when we got here."

Finally, it's starting to click. I'm starting to understand what's happening. "We were to lay low when we got here, stay out of trouble."

He bangs his hand on the desk and stands up to his full 6'4” height. "That's right. That's exactly right. But for some fucking reason, you guys can't listen to what I say."

I shake my head. "Pres, we haven't done—"

But he interrupts me and doesn't let me get the rest out. He points at me. "Do you think laying low is taking ten bikers through downtown Whiskey Run and invading a bakery? Huh, Jason, is that what you’d consider laying low?"

I sit up straighter in the chair. "We didn't invade anything. We paid for what we ordered, and I think those girls are happy to see us. We probably brought them more business than they've had in a long time."

Pres rolls his eyes and mutters, "Are you kidding me right now? Have you looked at you guys? Have you looked at yourselves? Do you think we fit in here at Whiskey Run?"

The question only infuriates me. I'm used to being an outcast. Hell, I've been one my whole entire life, but that doesn't mean that I'm going to hide from society or that I'm going to stand by so some other motherfucker will find the value in Tara. No, there's no way I'm going to stand by and let her date another man.

I grit my teeth and try to keep myself calm. "No, sir. I don't think that we fit in here in Whiskey Run, but I don't know what you were expecting when you moved 20 bikers—a motorcycle club—from Texas to the smallest town in Tennessee. You think people weren't going to notice?"
Looking at the non-descript building in front of me there’s no indication of the goings-on inside. You can't look at a building and know about the blood, sweat, and tears that are poured into it, and that's exactly what Walker, I, and the rest of the team have done with our business. This building, on the edge of Whiskey Run, houses the elite Ghost Team. We are all ex-military mercenaries that help people. We travel all over the world, wherever we’re called and save those that need it and then are out before any credit is given.

Thinking of all of the missions that I've been on the last several years, some of them stick out more than others, but every one of them was important. Every one of them made a difference. Knowing that makes what I’m about to do even harder.

I get out of the car and walk slowly into the building already dreading the conversation that I know is coming. I stop at the front desk and Brook, Walker’s wife and assistant, looks at me in surprise. Usually, I'm in a rush and wave a hello as I go by. So when I stop, she glances up to me. "Hey, Nash! You okay?”

I nod my head and point toward Walker's door. I let out a big breath. “Yeah... I’m okay. Is he in?"

She nods. "Yep. He's in his office."

"Great," I murmur to her as I walk past and then knock on Walker's door. I hear him say, "Come in" and I take a deep breath while pulling back my shoulders before pushing open the door.

"Hey man, what's up?" he says when he sees me. Walker is more like a brother to me. He is the one that financially set this whole thing up and brought me on. In the beginning, I went on every and any mission that I could. Even when I wasn't necessarily needed, I still went.

It's like it was in my blood, the need to save people and make a difference. I had to prove myself. When I married Emery, I should have settled down and stayed home more, but I didn't. And even though she told me over and over that she wasn't happy, I never fully grasped that, and it wasn’t until she served me with the divorce papers that it hit me and I knew I had fucked up. For almost a year now, we've been apart. It's been the worst year of my life. I know I have to change things, and it all starts right here in this moment.

My lack of response has Walker looking at me with his arms over his chest. "What's going on, Nash?"

I take a deep breath. It’s now or never. I just hope it’s not too late. "It's time."

Walker's eyes widen as he stares back at me. He knows exactly what I’m saying to him. It’s only two words, but he knows. I've told him over and over that I'm going to get Emery back. And he knows what I’m going to have to do to do it.

Walker repeats what I said. "It's time?" But he asks it as a question instead of a statement.

I nod. "Yes. I'm going to need to step back. No more missions for me." The truth is in this past year, I've cut back a whole lot. I've only gone when it was absolutely necessary and there were lives on the line if I didn't.

But now we are at a point where we are fully staffed. We can promote some of the guys to take over some more, and I can put 100 percent effort in getting Emery back. It's exactly what I should have done before the divorce went through.

I expect an argument from Walker, but he surprises me. "Okay. So what do we need to do? What do we need to put in place?"

I rear back in surprise. "You're okay with this?"

Walker leans over, putting his hands on his desk, and looks at me. "Maybe last year, I wouldn't have understood, but now that I have Brook, I completely get it, and we're going to make this work. You are still a partner in this company and always will be. You've put in your time, Nash. Hell, you've put in the time of three men. It's time you get what you deserve."
I’m falling for the rebound guy. Having my heart broken sucked. I mean really sucked.
My friends are worried about me and convinced me that I need to pick myself up—and the best way to do that is with a rebound guy.
They think I need to forget about the man that broke my heart and made me feel worthless. But it’s still too fresh, and I’m not ready.
At least not until the cowboy shows up for a taste of my cherry pie and overhears the girls trying to convince me that I need to have some fun.
So him being the charming, true cowboy that he is, he volunteers his services. I figure why not? He’s the exact opposite of my ex, so I take him up on his offer.
But when he’s way too good to me and treats me just right, I start to fall for him. I mean, how could I not?
What is it with me and impossible relationships? We agreed that he was going to be the rebound guy… but I never planned on falling for him.
At least it feels like I have. Thomas, my boyfriend of one month, rolls off of me and sits on the edge of the bed. I look down at myself, naked from the waist down. I know people say your first time is not always the best, but for some reason, I expected more than what just happened. I mean, that's it? Really?

I roll to my side, pulling the sheet across my waist and legs, and notice that Thomas is typing something into his phone. "What's going on?"

He doesn't even lift his head. Just shrugs his shoulders. "I'm about to head out."

That has me sitting up straight. "Head out?"

He stands up, disposing of the condom and pulling his clothes on. "Yeah, I have plans for tonight."

I shake my head, feeling as if I'm in some alternate universe. Literally, he’s barely got the condom off and he’s leaving. "You have plans for tonight?"

He rolls his eyes at me. "Yes, Becca. I have plans."

He pauses and then looks me straight in the eye. "I have a date."

My eyes about pop out of my head. I look at him incredulously. "A date?"

He points his finger between the two of us. "Yes, a date. This thing, you know, this," he says, pointing to the bed, "was just a one-time thing."

He's putting on his boots, and I get out of the bed and pull my shorts on. "A one-time thing?" I feel like a parrot, repeating everything that he says. "Thomas, we've been going out for a month. You told me that you loved me."

He's walking toward the front door, and I follow behind him. "Thomas," I say again, and this time, he stops and turns around.

He looks at me, clearly frustrated. "Look, Becca, this was fun, you know? I had a good time. But you know, you and I are not going to work out."

I throw my hands up in the air. "What, and you needed to take my virginity to realize that?"

He laughs. And it’s not just a soft smirk; no, he literally holds his belly as a deep laugh comes out. “What, you thought this was real? This isn't real, sweetie. This is life. In case you don't realize it, men tell you what you want to hear to get what they want."

I’m stunned... and pissed. How could I be so stupid? “What and you just had to fuck me? You lied to me... about everything... just to have sex.”

He shakes his head and looks at me, acting as if he’s dealing with a child instead of a grown woman. I’m waiting for him to pat me on the head by the condescending look he’s giving me. “No, I didn’t just want to fuck you... I wanted to fuck a virgin.”

He has the gall to reach out and put his palm on my cheek. Before now, I probably would've turned my face and kissed his hand, but not now. I jerk back, hating the feel of his hand on me.

"Fuck you, Thomas. You're an asshole."

He laughs again. "I could have told you that."

Without another word, he walks out of my house, and I slam the door behind him. I'm a fool. I'm a damn fool ... but even after thinking that, I know it wasn't completely my fault. I listened to him for a month. He talked about what I meant to him and our future. He did everything right, but it's like now, after seeing the real him, everything from the last month, I’m starting to see it in a different light. The times he said he forgot his wallet when we went out on a date. The times that he said he couldn't come over because he was working late. Then there were all the times that he would go out with his friends and I was never invited. He's been seeing other women this whole entire time.

I'm twenty-three, and I thought that I was too picky. I thought that it was time for me to finally lose my virginity. I thought that I needed to give him a chance, but boy was I wrong.

"I'm not going to cry," I tell myself as I walk back into my bedroom. I strip off my clothes on the way and walk into my bathroom, turning the water on in the shower as hot as it will go.

What I thought was going to be a good night has now turned into probably the worst night of my life. I fucked up, but there's no fixing it now.

As I stand underneath the scalding hot water, I vow to myself that I'll never put myself in this situation again. I was lied to, I was cheated on, I was used. If nothing else, I'm going to learn from it. From now on, I do things on my own terms, and I’m not falling for some guy that only wants a piece of ass.
My one-night stand wants more.
I’ve always been a plus size girl, and I’ve finally learned to love myself just the way I am. I was tired of men that only wanted me behind closed doors, so I swore them off and said I was done.
But two years without…uh… companionship and well, let’s just say I have an itch that needs scratched. So I’m doing this my way.
I found the perfect guy. He’s only in town for a week, plus he’s a hot alpha football player that makes me feel dainty and petite. One night. No strings.
But you know what they say about the best laid plans…
If you enjoy instalove, steamy stories where the beautiful, curvy plus size woman knows her worth and gets the hot alpha man, then you’ll love the Whiskey Run: Sugar series. Each book in the series is a standalone.

I shake my head, already over this game he’s playing.

“Katherine?”

Again, I smile but shake my head. It’s a small smile. I don’t want to encourage him, but I also don’t want to hurt his feelings. I’d been at the bar, sitting at a table close to the entrance for less than five minutes when the man introduced himself as Thomas and sat down next to me. He’s nice enough and friendly in a funny way. But I’m not interested. I know I shouldn’t judge a man by what he looks like. Heck, I hate it when a man looks at my curves and I see the judgment on his face. Which is why I’m being nice. But the truth is, I like a man that is big. Bigger than me with broad shoulders, a wide chest, and a big, thick body. Thomas is not any of those things. Plus, he looks like he’s barely old enough to be here.

I can’t help laughing, though, and I look at him skeptically. “Do I really look like a Katherine?”

He tilts his head to the side as if really considering my question. “Nope, not Katherine. Rachel?”

I blow out a breath. What am I doing? Well, I know what I want to be doing, but it’s not looking good. When I delivered cupcakes to Violet at Red’s Diner today, she invited me and the rest of the girls from Sugar Glaze to come out tonight. Violet’s husband is the running back for the Jasper Eagles. Their season ended, and they were all coming out to get together before some of their teammates leave to go out of town. I guess the team doesn’t get back together for training until spring, so they’ll have a few months off.

When she invited me, I knew I had to come. First of all, it’s in Jasper, which is thirty minutes away from our small town of Whiskey Run. And I’m not cutting on my small hometown, but the picking for men is dwindling fast. Plus, for what I have in mind, it’s better here in Jasper. If I wanted a man, a white picket fence, and two point five kids, I’d be fine in Whiskey Run. But I don’t want forever. No, I’m just looking for one night. I just want to blow off some steam and then I’ll be back to my regular, independent self. And I can’t do that in Whiskey Run without the whole town knowing about it.

“Not Rachel either,” I mutter, looking around the bar. It’s filling up fast, and I’m pretty sure it’s because word has gotten around that players from the Jasper Eagles are going to be here. I’m looking for Violet or even her husband, Josh. He’d be easy to spot because I’m sure there would be a crowd around him. Too bad Emery, Becca, and Tara didn’t come with me. We all work at the bakery together, and we spend a lot of time together outside of work. Emery had a date tonight, but I don’t know why she even bothers. Every one she goes on, she finds something wrong with the guy. I think she’s still hooked on her ex-husband, even though she denies it. And then Becca was at home, refusing to go out. She’s still recovering from her breakup with the two-timer, and even though the other girls and I agreed to give her time, I think her time is almost up. She needs to get back out there. And then Tara had plans with her new boyfriend.

“Jennifer?” Thomas asks, leaning across the table.

I lean back. “Nope. Not Jennifer either. I’m sorry, Thomas, but really, my boyfriend should be here any minute.”

He doesn’t believe me. It’s obvious he doesn’t by the way his eyes widen and he stares at me without blinking. I don’t give myself away, though. I keep my face unguarded and smile at him. Damn, I really don’t want to hurt his feelings, but he’s not taking a hint at all.

“Okay, well, I’ll just hang out here and make sure you’re okay until he gets here. I’ll keep you safe.”

I start to stutter. “Thank you but...” My phone starts to ring, and Violet’s picture shows up on the caller ID. “Sorry, I need to get this,” I tell Thomas and put the phone up to my ear.

“Hey, Vi!” I answer.

“Ugh, don’t kill me...”

“What’s wrong?” I ask her as Thomas perks up next to me.

“Our babysitter fell through. I’m so sorry, April.”

I’m bummed, but I don’t want her to feel guilty. “No, don’t apologize, I completely understand. Really, I promise.”

“Look, I’m going to have Josh call his friend that is going to be there and he’s going to find you and make sure you make it out to your car safely, so stay put, don’t move.”
