I look up from the paperwork I’ve spent the last hour wading through. At this point, any interruption is a welcome one, if only to give me a break. Unsurprising to all, my father didn’t keep the best of records. If it wasn’t for Jafar’s ambition—and organization skills—the whole feat would have been an impossible one.

As it is, I’m tired and irritable and all too happy to see Jafar walk through the door of the room I’ve converted to a study. I run my fingers through my hair and rise to meet him. “You look happy.”

“I have a surprise for you.”

My heart stutters and I examine his face. “A surprise.” The last time he surprised me, I ended up with three cocks inside me at the same time. The memory of that heats my skin and it must linger in my eyes as well from the way Jafar’s gaze narrows on me.

He slides his hands into his pockets, a sure sign that I’m about to end up on my knees. “If you’d like a repeat of that night, all you have to do is ask.”

It’s on the tip of my tongue to do exactly that. As much as I love my new role running my father’s business during the day, I love my nights with Jafar just as much.

But it’s not night at the moment, and unfortunately, I have far too much work to do before I can leave the study. “Soon.”

Jafar watches me for a few moments, and it takes everything I have to hold still, to let him look despite every instinct screaming for me to run. I know how that ends. I love how that ends. I force an annoyed sigh that I don’t feel. “You said you had a surprise. I still have to finish wading through the order shipments from last quarter.”

“You could have someone else do it.”

I give him the look that deserves. When it comes right down to it, he doesn’t delegate any better than I do. There are numbers off with the shipments, and while some of the responsibility for that sits at Jafar’s feet, I don’t think all of it does. I refuse to be as lax as my father was—or as heartless. “Jafar, can this wait until tonight?”

“No.” He reaches for the door. “Unfortunately, we’re on a time limit and she has somewhere to be tonight.”

She.

The door opens and there she is. Meg. Today she’d dressed in a leopard jumpsuit that shouldn’t work, but most definitely does. Then again, I don’t think there’s a single thing Meg could clothe herself with that wouldn’t have me licking my lips. The woman’s magnetism defies description.

She steps into the room and carefully closes the door behind her. I should say something, should do something, should stop staring and shake off this spell she weaves over me just by existing in the same room. I can’t quite manage it. Meg studies me with a small smile pulling at her lips. “Power suits you. I knew it would.”

That unsticks me. “You didn’t know a single damn thing. You gave me to Ali.”

She shrugs. “He made a deal. Hades holds my leash, baby girl. Something as simple as friendship doesn’t hold a candle.”

“Are we friends?” I hate that the question slips free, but it’s too late. It floats in the space between us.

She tilts her head to the side. “We could be. In time.”

Time for me to forgive. I’m not there yet. I don’t care how things turned out, how I handled the situation to land on my feet. She didn’t know that would happen when she handed me over. Hades didn’t know it would happen, either. I doubt he cared one way or another what happened once his side of the deal with fulfilled. “Does he know you’re here?”

“Probably.” She shrugs a single shoulder. “My tether is long enough when he’s in the mood to be generous.”

I still can’t really wrap my mind around their relationship, which is likely hypocritical. After all, Jafar and I are hardly traditional in any sense of the word. I look to him, trying to understand what he wants to accomplish with this visit. He, even more than I, holds a grudge against what they did. Against what could have happened to me before he got there.

He seems content to let this play out. His relaxed posture is a lie, though. I know him well enough to read the tension in the line of his shoulders and the coldness in his dark eyes as he watches her. If Meg makes one wrong move, he’ll haul her out of here. I frown. “If you didn’t want her here, why is she my surprise?”

Jafar cuts a look in my direction. “She’s not your surprise.” Now Meg gets a sharp look. “You don’t normally play errand girl.”
Once upon a time I made a deal with the devil. It turns out I like playing in the dark. Over the years, I’ve become someone I’m proud of, someone dangerous.
I’ll never be as dangerous as Malone, though. She’s one of the most feared leaders in Carver City, and her reputation is more than earned. Years ago, we had a single night together and she’s ignored me ever since.
Imagine my surprise to discover she’s scheduled me for the final two weeks of my contract. Maybe I should be afraid. Everyone else fears Malone. Instead, all I feel is anticipation. It’s time to balance the scales, once and for all.
The villains aren’t the only ones in Carver City a person should be wary of crossing.
Sometimes the prettiest flower hides the deadliest poison…
As if it’s enough to keep a person putting one foot in front of the other even in the most impossible situations. As if hope alone can see a person through anything.

Once upon a time, I even believed it.

Back when I was young and foolish and, even though the world had kicked me in the teeth time and time again, I somehow kept the stars in my eyes. I was so sure that if I could just believe hard enough, that if I could hold on to hope, one day my mother would wake up.

I didn’t realize that hope could sour, could slowly go dark and begin to poison every bit of me. I couldn’t have known that I’d learn to hate through virtue of that faltering light.

The woman in the hospital bed is my mother, but she might as well be a stranger. Even before a fight for dominance put her in a coma, she was more fantasy than reality to me. Nothing more than a promise of a relationship later, when I was older, when I could handle myself without being a liability. I just had to be a good girl and obey my grandmother and eventually my mother would send for me.

Another hope, dashed to pieces at my feet.

Twenty years later, and it’s finally time to admit that she’s never waking up. It’s time to make the decision I’ve put off for far too long. It’s time to finally let her go.

“Aurora.”

I suck in a breath and turn to Allecto. She’s the only other person who knows everything there is to know about my bargain with Hades, knows all the dirty little details of how I got to this place. Of who’s to blame. “I’m fine.”

“No, you’re really not.” She states it as fact, without a bit of pity. I appreciate that bluntness. Allecto won’t coddle me or tell me pretty lies. It’s one of the reasons she’s my best friend. “You don’t have to do this now.”

“Yes, I do. I only have two weeks left in my contract with Hades. If she hasn’t woken up now, she’s not going to.” I almost sound like I accept it as truth. As if I didn’t spend the entire night pacing my apartment and debating whether this is really the right call. But that’s cowardice talking. Facts are facts, and the fact is that if my mother were going to wake up, she would have done it years and years ago.

Allecto huffs out a breath and crosses her impressive arms over her chest. She’s wearing her normal street clothes outfit of jeans and a pale-gray T-shirt that sets off her dark-brown skin, and she’s got her long, black braids fastened back from her face. “You know as well as I do that Hades will continue to pay this bill as long as you ask him to. He’s not going to cut her off, not after all this time.”

She’s likely right, but I can’t ask him to do that. I won’t. “It’s time.”

She opens her mouth like she’s going to keep arguing but finally gives a sharp nod. “Do you want me to get the doctor?”

“Yes, please.” No reason to wait. No reason to give myself time to lose my nerve.

I wait for her to leave and turn back to the hospital bed. The machines that breathe for my mother make soft sounds that grind against my nerves. I’ve always hated hospitals, and this long-term care facility might pretty itself up, but it’s a hospital where people go to die. Today, my mother joins their number.

Truth be told, she died within a week of the injury that put her in a coma. At least according to the doctors.

My grandmother used to always tell me how much I reminded her of my mom. We have the same light-brown skin and delicate features, but it’s hard to see the similarities right now. She looks like a shadow of the woman she used to be. A ghost still retaining flesh, whose spirit has long since fled.

I close my eyes and try to breathe past the burning in my throat. “I’m sorry, Mom. I’m sorry that I’m giving up.” I take a ragged inhale. “I can’t fix what happened, but I’ll make sure she pays.”

She. Malone.

The woman whose bid for power took everything from me.

The door opens, and I wipe hastily at my eyes. Neither the doctor nor Allecto comment on it. Dr. Volsce has been in this facility nearly as long as my mother has. He takes my hands, expression carefully neutral but somehow sympathetic at the same time. “Are you ready?”

No. I’ll never be ready.

“Yes.”

He doesn’t ask me if I’m sure, for which I’m grateful. He simply gives my hands a squeeze and nods. “Okay.”
It’s a simple enough plan, if not for the faint of heart. An auction to sell the one thing I possess of any value—myself. The money will free Alaric and then we can finally be together. Except nothing is simple at all.
Ursa is playing at games I can only begin to comprehend. And Alaric? The man I thought I loved might be just as much a villain as the woman I can’t help but be drawn to.
When playing in the darkest depths of love and lust, it will be everything I can do not to drown.

1. Never leave Olympus.

2. My family members are the only people who value my safety and well-being, and as such, my loyalty to them should be my first priority at all times.

3. Never trust the Sea Witch.

Tonight, I’m breaking all three.

There might be time for regrets later, but as I watch Olympus disappear into the horizon behind me, I can’t dredge them up now. My sisters will be fine. They’ve never felt the city borders quite as acutely as I have. They’re happy in a way I can’t replicate. Maybe I could have settled before I met Alaric, but that possibility is long gone.

Now, I only have one path available.

I try very hard not to think about my father during the long bus ride to Carver City. I’m his youngest, the baby to be protected at all costs, for all that I’m twenty-three and lost my innocence right around the time my mother lost her life. Even if she were still among the living, no one stays sheltered in Olympus for long. Not when they move in the circles my father does.

I push the thought away and close my eyes. The future. The future is all that matters. My father will forgive me eventually, especially once he realizes I did it for love. Is there any more honorable motivation?

And I do love Alaric. Those weeks I spent with him over the winter were the happiest I’ve ever had. He’s kind and sweet and so incredibly respectful. What father wouldn’t want his daughter with a man like that?

I allow myself to sink into the warm memories to pass the time. It feels like between one blink and the next the bus shudders to a stop and the driver announces that we’ve reached the station. I move with the others to file out the doors and collect my bag.

Carver City looks much the same as Olympus. Tall buildings that threaten to block out the sky. People who go about their own business and spend their lives happily ignorant of what goes on in the shadows. Of the power players who hopscotch between what’s right and what’s wrong, because the only thing that matters is what they want. They posture and perform for friends and enemies alike.

It makes me tired just thinking about it.

I pull my phone out and bring up the address. It took me several long weeks to dredge up the courage to respond to the Sea Witch. Ursa, that’s her name. Somehow it doesn’t make her seem any less intimidating than the other. She’s not to be trusted. It doesn’t matter now. She’s only a woman, albeit a powerful and dangerous one. I am capable of taking her help without giving her anything priceless in return.

I hope.

As I stop at the curb, debating whether to call a cab or use an app to get a ride, a shiny black car melts out of the traffic and pulls to a stop in front of me. I stare at it blankly before giving myself a shake. Coincidence. That’s all it is. I’m sure it's waiting for someone else.

The window rolls down, and the first thing I see is red—red lips curved in a sinful smile. Then the woman emerges from the shadows inside the car. She’s Black and curvy and has a mass of locs that go from dark brown to a crimson at the ends that I envy. My father never let me color my hair “unnatural” colors, even after I turned eighteen, and so though my hair is technically red, it’s a deep red that’s almost brown.

I know who this woman is even before she speaks. “Ursa.”

“The very one.” I don’t know much about her beyond what my father’s ranted about when he drinks too much. A woman who threatened everything he held dear. One who tried to kill him and take his place as Poseidon’s second-in-command. A witch who likes to drown her victims to boost her reputation; someone who tried to drown him before he managed to win the war and drive her out of Olympus.

She must be my father’s age—somewhere in her late-forties to mid-fifties, but she looks younger than I expect. Or rather, she has the kind of ageless beauty that could put her anywhere from thirty to sixty. Her smile widens, though it doesn’t reach her dark eyes. “You’re looking for me, I presume.”

I am, but I haven’t quite caught up with the fact that she’s here. I expected her to wait for me in her home, to set the tone for me to be the powerless woman begging for aid and her as the only one who can give it to me. I didn’t expect this.

Then again, what is this but setting the tone in a different kind of way? She knew what bus I’d be on. Knew I’d be here at exactly this time and place. She must be watching me.

It has to be you, Izzy.

For the good of the family.

My sisters’ voices ring in my ears, even hours after our conversation. I stand on the curb and stare up at the building before me. It looks nearly identical to those around it: a nondescript gray square reaching into the sky as if it has every right to be there. It’s not remotely the same. No, this place arguably holds the most power Carver City has to offer. Neutral space. Every territory leader has an open invitation to come and go—for a price, of course. My eldest sister has been here a few times, but I’m strictly forbidden from attending.

Or I was before my father died.

It’s been months, and the grief still clings to me like a second skin. During my darkest days, I wonder if it won’t cling forever. My father was supposed to live for decades yet, to pass power to his daughters and retire to do whatever powerful men do when they’re no longer running a territory. He was fond of saying he’d like to spend his last days surrounded by dogs and grandchildren.

It won’t happen now. Cancer took him and there’s no getting him back.

I have to close my eyes against the cascade of emotion. I don’t want to be here, walking into the devil’s den. I’m not the leader like Cordelia. I’m not the genius like Sienna. I am simply the youngest. The woman who never quite grew up, the one who values her personal freedom above all else. My sisters were always destined to hold positions within our father’s organization. I was allowed to find my own way. Up until my father’s death, I believed that way would lead me on countless adventures and travel across the world. To freedom.

That’s no longer an option.

The first step is the hardest: to keep moving toward the fate I want nothing to do with, to not turn and run until I’m somewhere far from Carver City and the chains my sisters are asking me to encase myself in.

Inside, the facade of normality continues. I step into the elevator and take slow breaths that do nothing to calm my racing heart. I don’t know if I can do this. It seems simple enough from where my sisters sit. Our two most formidable generals have left us and are making no plans to return. It’s imperative that they stay, so we will do anything to ensure it happens. Simple.

Except it’s not simple at all. Not for me.

The elevator doors open and I step into a room that’s my first indication I’ve left the real world, such as it is, behind. The room is uniform marble, giving the impression of being unmoored. The only furniture is a single desk, and a beautiful Black man sits behind it. He looks up as I approach and gifts me with a smile that seems to brighten the room. “Welcome back to the Underworld, Isabelle Belmonte.”

Of course he knows who I am, even though this desk sat unmanned the only other time I came to the Underworld. Being the daughter of the so-called Man in Black is enough to make me a strange kind of famous. I give him a practiced smile even though all I want to do is turn around and leave. “Thank you.”

He rises gracefully and motions to the large black door dominating the wall behind him. “Since it’s officially your first time, Megaera will need to speak with you before you engage in any activities.”

Activities. Such a mundane word to encompass a very un-mundane topic. I know what goes on here, of course. Everyone in Carver City does. Power and kink and sex. The thought thrills me even as my palms go clammy.

I had wondered if Hades would acknowledge our very short, very ill-fated meeting several weeks ago. From the front desk man’s greeting, he is. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I came here before looking for some insight into our problem with Beast and Gaeton, but Hades gives nothing away for free and I’m not desperate enough to make one of his infamous deals.

If tonight goes poorly, I might have no other choice.

I nod at the man at the front desk, keeping my expression locked down. “Is Megaera available now?”

Another of those beautiful smiles. “She is. Please go ahead.”

“Thank you.”

Approaching the giant door feels like approaching the entrance to the Underworld in truth. Once I cross this threshold, there’s no going back, which is fitting because there wasn’t any going back from the moment my sisters sat me down and laid out what will happen to us if Gaeton and Beast leave permanently. More intense skirmishes with our borders. Maybe even war, if it comes to that.

I’ve just lost my father. I will do anything to ensure my sisters stay safe. Anything.
I don’t look up as I carefully set each drink on the table. Working at the Underworld feels a whole lot like swimming with sharks under the best of circumstances. Now, with a clock ticking down the seconds until I’m free, it’s significantly more dangerous. I place the final drink down and glare at Gaeton Thibault. He’s sprawled across half the booth, taking up more than his fair share, even considering how huge he is. He’s cocky and irritating, and I usually enjoy sparring with him.
Not tonight. Not with him tossing the reminder of my deadline at my feet.

I glare. “Get your feet off the table. This isn’t a barn.”

He holds my gaze for a long moment. It’s a struggle not to look away. Gaeton might have that easy charm that draws people to him, but he’s dominant right down to his big bones. He doesn’t fuck around, especially in this club. But I’m not the kind of submissive who will fall to their knees and play the silent partner to kinky bedroom games. I look down my nose at him. “Now, Gaeton.”

“You’re awfully bossy for a sub.”

“You’re awfully dense for someone who’s a general to the Man in Black.”

He chuckles and drops his feet back to the floor. “There. Are you happy now?”

Happy? As if that’s even in the realm of possibility for me. Happy is for people who aren’t walking around with my kind of sins tattooed on their soul. The weight of knowing what I left behind didn’t used to bother me. The relief of being free was too strong. Or, if not actually free, then free of him. Working for one of the scariest people in Carver City has its perks, but free will isn’t really one of them.

I realize I’ve been silent too long and snort. “You know better.” I prop a hand on my hip. “Your clothing order will be in tomorrow.”

He’s watching me too closely. People see the muscles and his general hugeness and assume Gaeton is an idiot. It’s something he’s embraced because enemies always underestimate him. I’ve been watching people too long not to know better. He’s smart as hell and has the kind of ambition that will either see him leading his own territory one day or burning the city to the ground around him.

Finally, he sits back and gives me a slow smile. “Why don’t you deliver it yourself? A little one-on-one with my favorite submissive.”

I don’t bother to resist rolling my eyes. “I always deliver it myself, you ass.”

“See you tomorrow, then.” He sinks enough innuendo into the statement to make several people within hearing range glance over. But that’s Gaeton; he likes a show, even at someone else’s expense. Implying that we’re meeting outside the Underworld—the neutral territory ruled by my employer, Hades—is a power play. An annoying one.

“Try to stay out of trouble in the meantime.” I glance at the other men at the table, but they’re all minions. No one will cause any trouble tonight, and Gaeton is here without Beast, which means the furniture is probably safe. Those two really need to fuck and get it out of their system, but no one asks my opinion.

I head back toward the bar that dominates the center of the room. It’s been built around a truly impressive marble sculpture that isn’t quite an explicit orgy but is close enough to count. It’s all very Hades, just like the rest of the Underworld. A sex club that specializes in kink and power, where all the main players in Carver City can come and spill their secrets into the willing ears of Hades’s Dominants and submissives. For being some of the scariest people in existence, they’re all too ready to do exactly that. It’s mind-blowing.

I stop next to the bar and check the room. Most of the half-circle booths lining the walls are filled; people use the shadows for covert conversations and foreplay. In another hour or so, many of them will start filtering into the public playroom through the door at the back.

The bartender, Tisiphone, gives me a sympathetic look, which is just as much a warning as her pouring healthy splashes of whiskey into two tumblers. Tisiphone might be the nicest of Hades’s three Furies, but she’s no slouch. And she knows better than to handle me with kid gloves. She tucks a strand of long dark hair behind her ear. “Hades wants to see you. He says to bring him a drink.”

Words I really, truly don’t want to hear. I might have made a deal with Hades four years, eleven months, and twenty-eight days ago, but I’ve avoided him as much as possible since. All his deals come with teeth, and mine is no exception. Usually, he’s content to let me work as long as I don’t rock the boat, but with my contract end date coming up, apparently that’s no longer the case.

Once upon a time, a woman fell in love with a man. He wasn’t a good man. Men never are, I’ve found. But this woman hadn’t learned that hard lesson yet. She still had stars in her eyes and the kind of innocent love in her heart that the world delights in setting aflame.

When the man asked the woman for a favor, just a tiny little favor to prove her love to him, because she did love him, didn’t she? Of course she said yes. Of course he left her to pay the price for his sins. Of course he never once looked back.

And the woman?

The woman lost her innocence in the flames of his betrayal.

She rose from the ashes, a goddess in her own right, second only to her new master.

It’s a good story, as such things go. Far more romantic than the reality: I loved the wrong man and made a deal with the devil to save him. That kind of man doesn’t cleave to innocence lost, no matter what lies he spilled to bargain me away, and he left me as soon as the price was paid.

It’s just as well.

The devil suits me better anyway.

The devil in question sits next to me in a corner booth in a restaurant that’s unfamiliar to me. He’s wearing his usual suit that always seems a tiny bit rumpled in the sexiest way possible and his salt-and-pepper hair is styled to perfection. Add in the thick black-framed glasses, and it’s enough to have me clenching my thighs together in anticipation. Or it would be if I didn’t know him better.

Nearly ten years at his side and I know what the gleam in those dark eyes and the tiny smile pulling at the edge of his sensual lips means. Nothing good. Not for me. Not for whoever he has his eye on.

I idly stroke the stem of my wine glass and sigh. Another day, another game of manipulation. Sometimes, I swear Hades pulls shit just to keep boredom at bay. When one rules his little sliver of Carver City and has every other ruler in town simpering at his feet, boredom is the only real danger he faces.

I wish my life were that simple.

I contend with boredom. Of course I do. I’m Hades’s right hand, his queen, the second most powerful person at the Underworld. No one would dare touch me. To do so is to court his wrath, and if there’s a single person in this world who holds a grudge better than I do, it’s Hades.

None of that protects me from the harm a decade together can cause. The kind of drifting that sets two people at odds despite their best efforts. I don’t know where we went so wrong, and I can’t begin to fix something so broken on my own. Hades doesn’t even seem to notice the distance between us that grows more and more uncrossable with each day that passes.

“How would you like to play a game, love?”

If he were the real Hades, or whatever creature rules the afterlife, he couldn’t be more tempting and dangerous than he is in these moments. I look away. I have to. I’m not the green twenty-three-year-old girl who bargained away her life for a man who’d forget her before the day had passed. I know better than not to play a game with this man.

No matter how much I love him.

“I’m really not in the mood.”

“My dear sweet Meg, always determined to play it straight.” His smile never wavers, but some of the warmth leeches out of his eyes. A warning, that. “You should know better by now.”

Yes, I should. I very much should know better by now. There was a time when I’d happily dance to any tune he set, wanting to please him for the sure happiness he shone down on me in those perfect moments. Now our love is more cruel edges and the kind of cut that one doesn’t even notice until hours later.

I lean back, putting as much distance between us as he’ll allow. “Like I said, I’m not in the mood.” I sound cold and uncaring, but I can’t seem to stop myself.

“Jafar’s baby girl is rubbing off on you, I see.” He studies his wine glass, still half-full despite our ordering before the meal arrived. “How is the darling Jasmine these days? For reasons unknown, Jafar seems disinclined to respond to my calls.”

For reasons unknown.

It certainly doesn’t have to do with Hades orchestrating her kidnapping a handful of months ago. “Pride a little hurt? Maybe you should have taken care of Ali before he damaged the Underworld’s reputation.” I smirk. I can’t help it. We know each other’s buttons too well, and even though it hurts, we can’t help dancing on them as it suits us.
No one comes into my room at night. Not my father. Certainly none of the men he insists on keeping in our house. Not even the ghost of my poor dead mother dares wander theses halls after hours.

It simply isn’t done.

And yet.

My feet ache from hours’ worth of pacing, my chest aches worse from the heart pain my father delivered earlier. Another betrayal after a lifetime of them shouldn’t be enough to keep sleep from me, but this most recent hurt weighs heavier than most.

He sold me.

Oh, he didn’t call it as such. He called it a merger secured by marriage. A meeting of two wealthy families with ties to the criminal underbelly everyone in this mausoleum of a house pretends doesn’t exist. I touch my face, the most persistent of my pains, the only one anchored in the physical instead of emotional. When I’d asked him what price his daughter brought, he’d struck me.

My mouth always had gotten me into trouble.

I slip into the deep shadows near my vanity as a man steps through the doorway and into my room. I can’t make out his features in the low light, but it doesn’t matter. He shouldn’t be here. Perhaps my father thinks to send my betrothed to ensure I won’t protest the marriage.

He’ll get what he deserves.

I barely dare to breathe and reach for the letter opener I’d left on my vanity. It is sharp and pretty, and it will serve my purpose as well as anything else.

The man moves on soundless feet toward my bed. If I need further evidence of his intention, I have it. He is no innocent, wandering into the wrong room—though nothing like that had ever happened before. He is here for me.

I will not go quietly.

I wait until he is several steps past me before I lunge. He’s too tall for me to reliably reach his neck from behind, so I go with the next best option. His sharp inhale and perfect stillness are his only response to the sharp blade pressing against the groin of his slacks. “Good evening, Jasmine.”

I freeze. I know that cultured voice, have heard it in both dream and nightmares for the last five years. This man isn’t my betrothed, the sword that’s hung over my neck since my father’s proclamation. No, he is far worse.

Jafar, my father’s second-in-command.

I catch myself before I relent. If Jafar hadn’t signed the contract himself, he was at least party to it, the trading of my body and soul as they trade in so many other unmentionable commodities. Why had I thought I was special? A princess locked in a tower is only kept away from the world for one reason: it has nothing to do with her safety and everything to do with her perceived value.

“I will not go quietly.” I don’t know why I say the words aloud, why I make this particular claim when so many others crowd my lips. Don’t make me do this. I don’t choose this. Help me. Save me. I am a daughter and not a son, so my father will never acknowledge me as heir, and neither will his men. Jafar owes no loyalty to me.

A new word bubbles up, the one I’ve only ever used in his presence once before. Our secret little game that we’ve played for five long years, to what end I haven’t let myself consider. “Rajah. Jafar, just … please.”

My only warning is a slight tension in his body and then he moves. He catches my wrist in a punishing grip and spins to face me, forcing my hand up and out, the letter opener falling from nerveless fingers. He captures my chin roughly, tilting my head back, though I can’t read his expression in the darkness. “You want me to save you.”

I should have known better.

Humiliation rolls over me, a toxic mix when combined with the fear and anger already bubbling up inside my skin, the emotions too big for this fragile shell of mine. I wish I was larger, more deadly, able to fight back in any real way instead of standing here, shaking in his grasp. “Fuck you.”

“Ah, there she is.” I don’t have to see his mouth clearly to hear the smile in his voice. If the devil exists, he sounds like a satisfied Jafar, all slow grins and carefully curated words that seemed to have meanings within meanings. His thumb brushes my lip, a glancing touch I only notice because I’m so hyper-focused on him.

On how close we stand.

All he has to do is lean down a little …

Or perhaps if I arch my back a little more …

My breasts will brush his chest. And our hips—No, best not to think about that. Not now.
