PACK RULE #9: FATE COMES SECOND FOR A SINGLE DAD
I didn’t move to Cooper Valley for love.
I’m here to raise my daughter in peace, work at Wolf Ranch, and keep my wolf on a tight leash.
Because I don’t have time for distractions. Or complications. And definitely not both in the form of a female.

Joy is my new next-door neighbor—sweet, sexy, and entirely off-limits.
She always has a messy bun and a laugh that melts steel.
She makes my little girl giggle like I’ve never seen before.
She makes me burn with need.

She’s sunshine. I’m thunderclouds.

I tell myself I’m too gruff, too brooding, too busy being a father to want her.
But my wolf doesn’t care about rules. He thinks she belongs to him.
He knows she smells like fate… and tastes even better.

How can I stay away? In the end, it seems fate will decide for me

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PACK RULE #9:
He knows she smells like fate… and she tastes even better.

How can I stay away? No matter how hard I try, it seems fate will decide for me.

1

WES

I turned off the water and slid the shower curtain back. Steam had fogged up the small bathroom and coated the mirror. I stepped out onto the bathmat, grabbed a towel–one of Remy’s pink ones–and started to dry off.

Moving sucked. Moving as a single parent with a four-year-old was even harder.

I’d found the sheets, the pots and pans, the toiletries. All important things. But the box full of stuffed animals was missing or at least hadn’t been unearthed from the pile still filling the living room.

It had been a crisis, the missing box. Still was.

I’d gotten Remy to sit in her booster that lifted her up to the right height at the kitchen table and color while I showered the sweat and dirt from hauling boxes and rearranging furniture.

As a shifter, lifting heavy things was easy, but in July, it still brought out some sweat.

I swiped the mirror with my towel, then rubbed at my hair.

As I stared at my half-fogged reflection, I couldn’t miss how fucking tired I looked. I was a father, not a grandpa.

I took the day off to move, but Remy still needed dinner. Her own bath. Finding that missing stuffed animal box. Plus, I had to be up at Wolf Ranch at dawn. My responsibilities, here at home and at the ranch as the foreman, never ended.

“Food,” I grumbled to myself. “You need food, a beer, and some TV that doesn’t involve cartoons or princesses.” I wrapped my towel around my waist. Barely. I glanced down. I was not made for a pink toddler towel.

“Remy, what do you say to hamburgers for dinner?” I called.

She didn’t answer, which was a surprise because even though she was a tiny thing, she loved to eat. And being a shifter pup, she loved meat. She also loved to talk. To me. To herself. To her stuffed animals.

“Remy?” I came down the hall from the bedrooms, hand on the towel at my hip.

The one-story rancher I bought was in town on a nice lot. I’d chosen it because it had been completely renovated–new everything–which meant I didn’t have to spend any time fixing leaky faucets or updating an outdated bathroom. The location was perfect to get Remy to school, hang out with friends when she was older, and do all the kid things living isolated on a ranch didn’t offer. I’d waited to buy a house and move our shit out of storage until I was sure it was going to work out with the new job and pack.

It seemed we’d struck gold with the Wolf Ranch pack. They’d welcomed us both like we were family, not perfect strangers, who also happened to be shifters.

The routine and closeness was just the change Remy and I needed after being on the rodeo circuit for six months out of the year. Plus, things had gotten weird in our home pack. I’d heard that Remy’s mom had shown back up, and I hadn’t wanted her messing with our daughter’s head. Hell, I didn’t even want Remy to meet her.

It was hard enough that I had to explain to my daughter why her mom wasn’t around. The last thing our pup needed was to feel that abandonment more acutely after meeting her mom and having her skip town again. It was one thing to be abandoned when she was three weeks old. A four-year-old remembered everything. And everyone.

But she doesn’t know what I am. What I’ve done. I’m not just a ranch hand–I’m a shifter enforcer. The clock is ticking before I have to finish the job.

I must win my mate’s heart and claim her before the lies catch up to me. Before she finds out what I am and what I have done. Or what I will do to keep her safe. And mine.

1

JOHNNY

“The first kill’s the hardest,” Clint Tucker said, looming over the body.

On the ground was the rogue shifter who we’d hunted at the request of the Shifter Council. After a hearing, they’d sentenced him to death because he was the lowest of the low. He’d deserved to die.

But Clint was wrong–it wasn’t hard at all.

“He killed his mate,” I said, even though Clint knew the score. “Got into an argument and… finished her.” I shook my head, wiped a hand down my face, and realized it had blood on it.

Great.

“And the pups,” Clint added. “They hid under the front porch. Heard it all.” He spat on the body. “Worthless. They only came out after he drove off. Found their mother shot in the head. They called their alpha.”

“They did the right thing,” I said.

Clint had zero remorse for putting this guy down. He had a mate and a beautiful little daughter. Lily. He’d stop at nothing to prevent harm coming to them.

He nodded. “They did. When it’s time for Lily to get a mate, I’ll be answering the front door with my guns and silver bullets.”

I couldn’t help but grin, even at a time like this. We were somewhere deep in the Bighorn Mountains west of Ranchester, Wyoming. We’d tracked this guy here all the way from his pack land in North Dakota.

It was early morning, an hour before sunrise. The air was cold, the wind whipping through the pines. It never stopped blowing out here, which was this fucker’s downfall. We scented him miles away.

“This isn’t my first kill,” I admitted. First as an enforcer though, when it was sanctioned. But I’d had blood on my hands before.

He looked up from the body to meet my gaze. The moon was setting, but I could still see the question in his eyes.

“I killed a guy before,” I admitted.

His eyes widened but didn’t otherwise react. He was one chill dude. “Shit, Johnny.”

“I was eighteen. We went to the Pack Games with our mom hosted by her old pack. There was a shifter there. He took interest in my sister.” I spat the last because it still made me furious.

“Mate?”

I shook my head.

If it was weird for him to have this conversation over a dead body, he didn’t show it. As a retired enforcer, he’d seen all kinds of shit, I was sure. He’d walked away from the job when he found Becky, his human mate. Except, he’d volunteered to come on this job with me since we were pack mates, and it was my first.

With Clint done, I was the new Wolf Pack enforcer. Rob Wolf knew my past and had volunteered to take me in when I’d been banished from my birth pack. Knew what was in me. A protective streak. A mean streak. Hell, probably a hell of a lot of darkness. That was why I was chosen for the enforcer position. Besides being unmated and young.

“What happened?”

“I thought she was interested in him, too. Maybe she was, maybe she wasn’t. All I know is I happened upon him assaulting her in the woods,” I gritted out between clenched teeth. Worse than that, but I didn’t need to say it aloud. “I stopped it, but…”

I thought back, remembered the red I saw, then the red of his blood as it soaked into the ground. “I went too far.”

He slapped me on the shoulder. “Protecting those weaker than you is a sign of a good alpha. And to be an enforcer you have to be willing to go too far. That’s the only way to stop a shifter gone bad.”

I swallowed around the lump in my throat. “Yeah. He’d gone fucking bad.”

“You’ll make a solid enforcer. You are one.”

I dropped my gaze, remembering after the kill what they’d done to me. Kicked me out of my pack. Separated me from my family. “That kill wasn’t sanctioned.”

He shrugged. “So? If he was hurting your sister, that means he’d probably hurt others before and would have hurt others after.”
PACK RULE #7: PACK SECRETS MUST BE KEPT

I’m supposed to erase her memory, not claim her.

My son’s date knows too much. The most important rule of the pack has been She's seen him shift. The alpha orders me to make her forget, but one hint of her scent and I know the truth—this human is MINE.

Riley’s half my age. She has her whole life in front of her. If I claim her, I lock her into a fate she never even imagined. Besides, she thinks I’m a player–only out for one thing.

I should stay away. Should let her go. But Riley is too sweet, too beautiful, and far too mine.

Now she’s caught between our two worlds—one side thinks we should steer clear of each other. The other wants a forever bond…either way, she’ll suffer the consequences.

She doesn’t understand the bond between us, but I can’t protect her without it. When danger comes for her, she has to trust me to keep her safe—the wolf who was born to be hers.

*************FULL BOOK START HERE*************

PROLOGUE

RILEY

Huh.

I’d thought kissing Tyler McIntire would elicit something more than… meh.

I pulled back from the kiss and rubbed my lips, looking away toward the river we sat near. What I thought would be a romantic picnic in the wild just turned…

AWK-ward.

And we were a mile into the canyon. No quick escape was possible.

The kiss?

Um.

Wrong.

So wrong. I had to say something before he tried again.

“Was it just me, or did that feel…” God, how did I say this?

“Weird,” Tyler supplied, giving me a smile. A chagrined one. A… what was the word for a smile that was fake and just as awkward as the kiss we just shared?

I’d always had the hots for Tyler–he’d had those wide shoulders and that deep, commanding voice since tenth grade. He always seemed… more than the other guys in our class. By the time we graduated, he was the heartthrob of the entire county. But he was off-limits because throughout high school, he’d dated Lila, one of my best friends.

I’d had to wait my turn.

Now they’re broken up. Amicably–no big heartbreak on either side. She’d gone to college in Utah, and he’d stayed in Cooper Valley to work at Wolf Ranch. I even asked Lila if she’d mind if I dated him, and she’d said no.

So when I bumped into Tyler at the grocery store last week, I flirted and asked if he wanted to hang out. He’d suggested a hike–he’d always been an outdoorsy guy. Today, he took me down into the canyon to a path along the riverside. When he pulled out a picnic blanket from his backpack, my heart fluttered. I love romance.

But then… the kiss. So bad.

Relief trickled along the sides of my neck. At least we were on the same page. “Yeah!”

Tyler picked up a stone and sent it skipping into the river like a pro. He really was the perfect guy–big, strong, good at everything he did, and chivalrous–a true cowboy. The old-fashioned kind that Cooper Valley bred.

“Um, maybe it’s because I feel guilty.” I groped for some reason why kissing Tyler–after all this time and imagining–wouldn’t be hot as hell. “I crushed on you for so many years, but you were with Lila. Maybe I programmed my brain to think of you as a brother or something.”

Tyler laughed and turned his gaze on me, his blue eyes crinkling with amusement. “You crushed on me, huh?”

I poked him with my elbow. “Don’t let it go to your head, big guy. Every girl in school crushed on you!”

His smile grew wider. God, he was really good looking. But all attraction was gone now. “Yeah?”

“Stop fishing for–”

He tilted his head back and… sniffed, which distracted me from finishing my sentence.

Because it looked as if he’d caught a scent of cookies and wanted to follow it.

“Oh, shit.” Tyler jumped to his feet to stand in front of me.

It took a second to process what was in front of us.

A mountain lion, which looked like a big, very scary cat. The domestic cats I met had all been snooty assholes, but this very-not-domestic one looked downright evil. Like he was going to toy with us, then rip us to shreds. Oh yeah, then eat us. Growing up in Montana, I heard about the dangers of a chance encounter with a mountain lion, even a bear, on a trail. That they stalked you when you didn’t know it, they were that stealthy. Holy shit, they were right. I never knew it had been nearby. And now it was right in front of us.

He lifted his arms in the air like you’re supposed to do to make yourself appear taller. “Whoa,” he shouted. Like he was addressing an errant bull on the ranch where he worked, not a supersized feral cat.

I scrambled to my feet, but he threw out an arm to keep me behind him.

“Easy, cat.”

The mountain lion did not take it easy, though. It took a silent step closer, crouching lower like it was getting ready to pounce.

“Tyler, um, mountain lion. That’s a mountain lion!”

Like he didn’t know, but my panic was making me act like an idiot. An alive one. I didn’t want to be a dead one.

“Fuck. Stay behind me. I won’t let anything happen to you.” He raised his arms and waved them up and down again as if he were flagging down a semi-truck.

I’d be swooning if it weren’t for the brotherly kiss. What was wrong with me? This magnificent man should totally turn me on.

Yes, still an idiot. I was thinking about being with Tyler at a time like this. Maybe my life was flashing before my eyes.

I stayed behind him, inanely clutching the back of his shirt in my fist as if he might get away from me if I didn’t hang on for dear life.

The big-ass cat charged.
PACK RULE #6: KEEP HUMANS AWAY FROM PACK LAND.

My alpha told me to get rid of her. Make nice and find out if she’ll sell her property. Keep her from bringing more humans close to our land. But before I’ve even met her, I catch her scent. The moon’s full and I have to follow it. I can’t stop myself. I ran straight into human territory, onto her property. Find her bathing naked in the moonlight and show her my wolf. Now all bets are off. My alpha may want her gone, but I need her to stay. In fact, I’ll do anything to make sure she never, ever leaves.
The full moon was driving me fucking nuts this moon cycle. The last couple days, it felt like the monthly pack run would never arrive.

As we raced to strip off our clothes in the mudroom of the pack cabin, I tore my jeans getting them off my legs.

“Easy there, champ,” Boyd said to me with a lazy grin. Fucking easy for him to say—he no longer has the raging urge to mate since he found his female last summer.

Not that the sharp intensity I felt to run was about the urge to mate. I didn’t even crave the usual full moon joy-fuck with any of the unmated females. What I needed was to run, run hard. Push myself because I was desperate for something I didn’t even know.

I kicked off my second pant leg with a frustrated growl.

“Moon got under your skin?” he asked. The rodeo champ was too easy going for his own good.

“I guess,” I muttered, running a hand over the back of my neck.

Karen, the she-wolf who’d been trying to hook up with me for the last couple moons, tried to make eye contact, but I dodged the glances. I had zero interest in pursuing sex with her tonight. Or ever. My wolf snarled at the thought of touching her, and it wasn’t because she’d already tried to hook up with every other unmated male in the pack. It was normal for unmated wolves to screw around during the full moon, usually without any weird expectations, but Karen was clingy. And right now, I couldn’t wait to shake her.

That was the fucking confusing part. Usually the aggression with the full moon—the need to run and hunt—was equal to the need to fuck. And while the randiness was there—hell, my boner was swinging in the wind as I jogged outside—none of the usual choices sparked any interest from me.

No, this primal feeling that something had crawled under my skin had me running in human form before I’d even shifted, the ground hard beneath my bare feet.

“Race you to the other side,” my brother Clint said, goading me by smacking my bare ass as he dashed by. The fucker.

His mate, Becky, was human, so she didn’t shift; however, she was always amused by his antics on a run. And well satisfied when he returned. I’d put money on her expecting their second pup anytime by the way they got it on.

With a snarl, I dropped to all fours, pine needles skidding out below my giant paws as I shifted and took off at a sprint. The night air was cool, not a cloud in the sky. Perfect. I chased my older brother, nipping at his flanks like we were still teenagers, but when we finally reached the ridge, I dropped back. Stopped. Something pulled me in the opposite direction from him and the others.

I longed to go down the mountain. Toward the Sheffield ranch next door.

Where humans lived.

Where it was forbidden to run.

Boyd ran by, his wolf loping with an easy grace. He enjoyed these runs alone before heading back to satisfy his human mate, Audrey. He chased me for a moment, nipping at my heels to get me moving, but I snarled, showing my teeth, and he ran on without me.

What was down there?

It didn’t matter, I couldn’t investigate. Not in wolf form, and I’d been dying to let my wolf out all week.

I started to follow the pack, but every step I took made my agitation grow. I needed to go the other way.

Fuck it.

I turned back and trotted to the ridge again. Put my nose in the air to sniff. There was something on the wind. Nothing detectible, nothing I could describe to another wolf, but I would swear there was a scent calling to me.

I cocked my head, listening to the yip and howl of the younger wolves in the pack learning how to hunt. Rob, the alpha, would kick my ass for breaking a pack rule. We didn’t run in human territory. Ever. It was beyond dangerous for the pack.

No one could know there were wolves in this area. There’d been issues in the past, and none of us wanted more.

But I tore down the mountainside anyway, my paws scrambling through the loose gravel on the steep slope. I ran hard and fast, following my instinct, hardly noticing which direction I was going.

Not until I ran straight past the Wolf property line, where my alpha’s family lived and ranched. I found myself on human property, on Old Man Sheffield’s land where I used to work as a teenager. Even though it had been over a decade since I’d last worked here, I knew this terrain inside and out, and it felt as much like home as Wolf Ranch.
Especially with raging teenage hormones. It had practically destroyed me, and the day I turned eighteen, I’d left my human family. Never wanted to live under the same roof as a human again.

Until now.

I took off my hat, rubbed the sweat away with the bandana that had been tucked in my pocket. Clint, Johnny and I had been herding cattle and were finally done for the day.

“It makes no sense.” My fellow ranch hand Johnny hopped down from his horse, dust kicking up around his boots, to close the fence behind us. I leaned against my pommel and waited. “Why have a guy stay here two weeks just to breed a mare?”

And why did he have to stay with us in the bunkhouse? I wanted to ask, but I kept my mouth shut. Everyone already knew how I felt about living under the same roof as a human. About my past trauma.

“It takes, what? A few minutes to pasture mate once they get down to business?” Johnny continued. “It’s not like the guy’s trying to get some woman pregnant. It’s a dang mare.”

“I know,” Clint let his exasperation show in those two words. “Apparently, pasture mating’s too rough for this guy’s prized mare. He wants hand mating, and not by us—by his own vet. He’s like a… chaperone for a horse.”

I snorted.

“I just don’t get it.” Johnny said. The nuances of horse breeding weren’t his thing.

They weren’t mine either, really, but if some rich yahoo wanted to have his personal veterinarian babysit a mare he brought to Wolf Ranch to be bred, what did I care? I just didn’t like the part where the vet had to stay in the bunkhouse with me and Johnny.

Clint didn’t disagree with Johnny. He’d always had a calmness about him, but the fact that he smiled all the time was new. He’d met his mate back in the fall, and they’d had a baby only a few months ago. To say he was happy was an understatement. He was in fucking wolf heaven. A marked mate. A pup.

“It takes more than once to get the job done,” Clint reminded us.

“It took you only once,” Johnny countered with a sly grin and a wink.

Clint and his human mate Becky had gotten pregnant their first go—a one night stand kind of thing. When he finally figured out she was his mate, he’d moved out of the bunkhouse and now lived in a cabin up in the hills with his new family.

“There are a lot of high maintenance horse people in this country,” Clint said. “This guy is one of them. If he wants to have a vet remain to supervise his horse breeding and is willing to pay top price for it, he can waste his money all he wants. We can stand having a human around for a couple weeks. It’s worth the money he’s paying, believe me.”

Johnny frowned although he had no comeback for that.

“Besides,” Clint continued. “If his mare can be bred every other day, not just once, the chances of the horse and the vet leaving Wolf Ranch after the two weeks are even better.” Clint tipped his hat back. “After that, you’ll only have to share the bunk house with this grumpy fuck once again.” He thumbed his shoulder in my direction. “Until he’s voted in as sheriff in the fall, then he’ll be living in my parents’ place in town full time.”

I climbed down from my horse and led him over to the rail to loosen the bridle. I wanted the sheriff job. It might not lead to justice for my parents, who were killed over fifteen years ago, but I’d get it for others and protect the secret that shifters resided in this county. I’d crashed at Janet and Tom’s place a few times when the weather was too bad to drive the canyon road, but living in town? I wasn’t so sure about that. The election was months off, so I wasn’t going to borrow trouble with arguing about where I was going to sleep.

“He’s on his way in,” Boyd, our alpha’s brother, called.

We stopped our work and looked up. He and his mate Audrey were walking our way from the main house. His pace was slow to match his mate’s, who held little Lizzie in her arms. When Audrey wasn’t working at the hospital, the three of them weren’t far apart. “Fancy truck with a fancier trailer.”

I nodded once because it was as I expected. Rich, eccentric horse owner, fancy horse fixins, including a twenty-four/seven vet.
We hooked up one night at Cody’s Saloon. The beautiful nurse wanted a ride and I’d given it to her.
Made her scream and sent her home happy.
She didn’t tell me there’d been consequences. She’d kept her secret close. For months. But what she didn’t know could change everything.
That baby she carried wasn’t human. And this wolf would never walk away from his pup.
She may not want me in her life, but that was too bad. I was moving in—watching over her and providing for my family.
She was under my protection now.
Whether she wanted it or not. Whether she wanted me or not.
The twang of country music filled the air along with whoops and hollers from the back corner where people tested their mettle on the mechanical bull. The scent of spilled beer and potent cologne made me wish for wide open spaces. I tossed back another whiskey and watched the blonde nurse weave across the floor for her turn. Tipsy humans weren’t usually my thing, but this one was damn cute. Her lush mouth was wide open in a carefree smile, her cowgirl hat askew on her head. She wore a pair of hot pink, cowgirl boots with her short jean skirt that combined to make her the hottest number in the bar. I was jealous of the mechanical bull. If she wanted to go for a ride, she’d get more fun out of my dick. I could promise her that.

Of course, my pack brother, Boyd, would strongly disagree with my desire to sidetrack the nurse from his mate’s bachelorette party. The shindig we males crashed.

Boyd and Colton had ridden in a limo with their mates and the other ladies in the group. I’d caught up to them because leaving human females unprotected at a drinking establishment was not a possibility. Boyd and Colton were keeping an eye on their mates, but as council enforcer, it was my secret job to keep everyone safe at all times. Audrey now belonged to the pack, and the way Colton was keeping a protective watch on her sister, growling at any male who came near her, I had a feeling she’d be mated as soon as they found an available horizontal surface.

Lucky bastards.

I accepted another shot and raised my glass to Boyd, who stood a few feet away, protecting his mate. His pregnant mate.

Again, lucky bastard. How the cocky fuck found a human to be his mate, claim her and put a baby in her belly was beyond me. He hadn’t been around in years. Returned home for one rodeo event, and he’d been lassoed by a cute Ob/Gyn.

And me? I’d been downing the liquor like it was water, trying to tamp down my wolf’s agitation that I hadn’t found my own mate yet. I was older than Boyd and Colton and had had plenty of opportunity, not only in Cooper Valley but also as I traveled as an enforcer. I had more reach than most shifter males to find a mate.

Now, looking at the Wolf brothers zeroed in on human females, it occurred to me that maybe I’d been looking in the wrong places.

I hadn’t realized a wolf could choose a human for a mate, but clearly they had. It made no sense to me logically, but there was no denying biology. Boyd was certain. Colton looked pretty damn certain too.

I glanced away from the Wolf boys and caught a glimpse of Becky on the bull. Yeah, the hot little number with a jean skirt riding high on her thighs made my dick press painfully against the zipper of my jeans. A human male—damn, actually three human males—lurched toward Becky, the adorable tipsy nurse, as she hopped off the mechanical bull. My wolf growled.

I didn’t like males taking advantage of a female who’d been drinking. She might not be my female to specifically protect, but she was here with our group, and I’d be damned if I was going to let any male paw her when she was in this inebriated state. Hell, even if she was stone cold sober.

I downed the two fingers of whiskey and pushed off from the bar, picking my way through the crowd with my gaze glued to the petite blonde.

“—why don’t you take a ride on me next?” some asshole said to her.

“Why don’t you let me through?” she countered, arching a brow.

Good. She wasn’t as drunk as I’d thought. I liked knowing she could take care of herself. Still, I felt obliged to provide back up. It was in my wolf DNA and in my enforcer job description.

“You heard the lady.” My deep voice cut through the crowd, and four heads swiveled my way in surprise—the three human men vying for Becky’s attention and the lovely nurse’s. I didn’t get in her space, wanting to give her the room the other guys weren’t offering.

She beamed at me from her spot by the rail that enclosed the mechanical bull area. Her blue eyes showed pleasure at seeing me, and I wondered what they’d look like when they showed pleasure from me getting her off. I didn’t care if it was on my fingers, on my mouth or on my dick. I’d satisfy her any way she wanted it.

“Thank you, Clint.”

It took me a second to recover from surprise that she knew my name, and in that moment, the asshole in question positioned himself between me and my little nurse. Yeah, my little nurse because I had my sights set on her. But these assholes were pretty much cockblocking me, which really didn’t set well. The fact that they were messing with Becky didn’t make me happy either.
One just moved into the ranch next door. She’s way too tempting. And I’m way too dangerous.

I hadn’t been to the Shefield house since the old man passed away. The concrete heaved in spots, and weeds sprouted from the cracks. The place needed tending, and hopefully, the niece, Natalie, would tackle it. It was the second week in August, and snow was known to fall in early September. That seemed downright impossible with the ninety-degree weather we were having. At least the hard storms from last month seemed to have ended.

I gave Clint a look that as his boss and alpha should have made him cower, but he only grinned. “What?”

“Cute? Seriously? Are we back in middle school?” I took off my hat, wiped my brow with the back of my hand, then stuck it back on.

“You thought Brittany Simms was cute. Remember that hard-on you got in the cafeteria? Your eyes glowed so bright it was a wonder the humans didn’t notice.”

I swore under my breath at the embarrassing memory as I climbed the porch steps.

“I have to wonder if your dick ever got hard again.”

I gave him another look. Most of my pack members, especially the guys who lived and worked on the ranch, didn’t push their luck with me. Clint and I, though, had been friends since birth, raised in the pack together. Still, I was fucking sick of anyone thinking my dick’s prerogatives were their business. If I had to go to one more pack’s mating games and deal with the heavy expectations that I leave with one of their she-wolves permanently claimed as mine, I was going to shoot myself.

Especially after what happened last time.

“I don’t see a mating bite on any female you’ve dated, asshole,” I grumbled.

“I’m playing the field,” he replied, offering a small shrug of his broad shoulder.

“More like playing with yourself,” I muttered.

He snorted a laugh. “The difference is I’m not alpha. Much less chance of moon madness hitting me. Plus, no one gives a shit if it does, and they have to put me down when I go feral.”

“Being alpha’s one thing, but everyone keeping track of where my dick’s been and where it needs to go is annoying as fuck.”

He studied me, then nodded once. “All we know about Natalie Shefield is that she’s in a masters program for music somewhere in California. If she can take care of your problem, then what’s the hang up?”

“You know what the problem is. She’s human.”

My brothers might have been able to mate humans, but I couldn’t. I was the alpha of the Cooper Valley pack. My pups had to shift, had to be pure. I, personally, didn’t give a shit about this, but I knew others did. The grumbling had begun a few years ago when I crossed age thirty without mating and became high risk for moon madness. As time passed and I had yet to find a mate, the muttering got louder, the concerns grew. My pack respected me, and they didn’t want to lose me. I had to ensure the line continued. Find a mate—a wolf mate—and breed her.

“That makes her off limits,” I countered. “If you think she’s cute, then you can have a go.”

As he opened his mouth to say something, most likely stupid, a female cry cut through the quiet.

I tensed and looked to Clint. Clint looked at me. His blue eyes widened in surprise then concern. A female in trouble raised every one of a shifter male’s instincts to help. To protect. To destroy whoever was a threat.

My hand shot out to try the front door. Unlocked. That made it easy, but I wasn’t past kicking it down if needed.

Throwing it open, we stepped into the entry. It looked exactly as it had the last time I’d been in, as if my old friend was still around. Old Man Shefield had handed down his house, furnishings and all.

To the right was a family room with a stone fireplace. To the left, a dining room with an antique table and chairs. Directly in front of us was a central hallway that led back to the kitchen and also a staircase that led to the second floor. It turned to the right at a landing halfway up. I’d never been on the second floor, but based on the size of the house, I had to assume there were four or five bedrooms.

“Take this floor,” I told Clint. “I’ll head upstairs.” Another cry bounced off the walls. I went up the steps two at a time as my friend headed toward the kitchen.

At the top, I looked left and right. Six doors, all closed. I stilled to use my wolf hearing. I picked up ragged breathing from the right.
She was way too young. Way too human. Still in college. And too bright a force of nature.
The sky had opened up and was dumping buckets. I’d never seen it rain so hard. The wipers on my little rental barely worked, even on the highest setting. I was practically crawling down the back road, and it was going to take me hours to get to Audrey’s.

“Shit,” I said aloud, fumbling to grab the phone from my purse on the passenger seat. “Hello.”

“Hello, Marina Thompson?”

A huge flash of lightning cut across the sky, and it illuminated the road in front of me. It wasn’t dark yet, but it might as well have been midnight. I saw the road in front of me—or lack of it—and a split second later, I slammed on the brakes.

A car-rattling boom followed directly, which made me jump in my seat.

“Shit.”

A huge river of water was cutting across the road.

“Hello?” the voice in the phone said.

I took a deep breath and stared out the window as best I could to the water that was blocking my way. It was too deep to cross.

“Oh my God. There’s a river in the road… ” I sighed. “Um, yes. This is Marina.”

“I’m Janine Fitz in the bursar’s office.”

“Yes, hi. Sorry, I’m caught in a little bad weather.” I added the last because the woman probably thought I was crazy.

“I wanted to inform you that the payment for fall semester has not come in,” she said from somewhere dry and sunshiney at the university. “It was due last Monday.”

I blinked, processed her words. Maybe I hadn’t heard her right, for the rain was pounding on the car. “My father sends in a check for each semester.”

That was pretty much all he did for me.

“It’s not here. If we don’t receive it promptly, we will assume you are not attending for the upcoming school year.”

“I’m attending,” I said quickly. Another streak of lightning followed by a clap of thunder. “I am. Thank you for calling, and I’ll follow through.”

“Have a good day,” she said.

“You, too.” A good day? It was like the heavens had opened up in the middle of Montana.

I looked down at my phone in my hand. Sighed. “Dad, what’s the deal?” I murmured as I quickly sent him a text about the missing money. I wasn’t expecting a reply because he rarely did, so I tossed the cell onto the empty seat.

I glanced at the road again. I didn’t think there was supposed to be a raging river out there. Or a bridge was missing. Either way, I wasn’t going any further. This shouldn’t be happening. I had to get to Wolf Ranch tonight.

“Not a chance,” I mumbled.

There was nothing I could do about the tuition. Or the impassable road.

So I’d just go with it. Enjoy the here and now. The summer class was over, the exam done. I was on vacation. I pushed open the door and climbed out. Instantly, I was drenched. Maybe it was a stupid move getting soaked through, but I had to get out and see this crazy Montana storm in person.

Up close and personal.

Until an hour ago, the weather had been perfect. Sunny skies with big puffy clouds, mid-eighties. The storm had blown in quick, the Big Sky country living up to its name as I’d watched it roll in from the west, and I’d driven right into it.

The rain was chilly as it pounded my face, stuck my hair to my cheeks and neck, absorbed into my sneakers. I took a deep breath and tilted my face up to the sky. Only the sound of the rain and wind could be heard. No big city noises like car horns or sirens. No construction or dogs barking. Nothing but me and nature for miles and miles. I smiled.

I didn’t realize how much I liked being out of the city until I was a time zone away. I could enjoy my break in Montana, starting with Audrey’s wedding. I couldn’t wait to meet the hot rodeo champ who’d lassoed her heart, the guy whose pics online were hot, hot, hot. I’d told Audrey once that I was vicariously living through her. I hadn’t been lying.

My love life was non-existent. Sure, the guys in my department had asked me out, but none of them had done it for me. I had no idea what I was holding out for… some of them were handsome and nice. Smart. Funny. But they were boys.

I wanted a man. A real man. A manly man. A guy to take hold of my hair and drag me back to his cave. Oh, and maybe not for him to flake like the last one. Sticking would be good, too. Maybe I’d settle for not cheating.

God, the bar was getting lower and lower.

Still, I knew exactly what had been missing. What I was craving. Heat. Chemistry. Off the charts sizzle.
Pack Rule #1: Never reveal to a human. I broke that rule the day I met the beautiful doctor. I might be a rodeo champ, but one look at her, and I lost my concentration.
The bull tossed and gored me, and now the sweet female is on to me. When I healed within hours, she knew something wasn’t right. My alpha told me to watch her.
Not a problem. I’ll watch her all right. Real close. I’ll stick to her like superglue. And those human men who want to date her?
They’d better step back. Because the doctor is all mine. Whether she knows it yet or not.

Audrey
I will not fall for a rodeo champ. I will not fall for a rodeo champ. That’s what I keep telling myself. I moved to Cooper Valley, Montana to settle down. Start a family.
That doesn’t work if you fall for the rodeo circuit’s biggest player. But Boyd Wolf is more than a rodeo champ. He’s something different.
Something...wild. Rough. He plays dirty. And he doesn’t seem to have any intention of releasing me from his sights.

Books in Series:

Wolf Ranch Series by Renee Rose

Books by Author:

Renee Rose

1

BOYD

My thoughts were on fucking.

Most guys had their heads focused on their upcoming ride, the eight seconds they had to keep their ass on the back of a pissed off bull. Me? I wasn’t thinking with that head.

I was amped up, and I wanted to pump that excess energy into a hot, tight pussy. And there were tons of options around the arena.

“Hey, champ. Can’t wait to see you ride,” one of the buckle bunnies cooed as she strutted past me.

“Thanks, gorgeous.” All I had to do was wink at Sherry or Cindy… whatever her name was, and I could take her for a ride. With the jean skirt that was—thank you baby Jesus—nothing more than a denim Band-Aid around her waist and a white tank top that barely hid her perky tits, I knew what was on offer. The ride might take longer than eight seconds—I could go all night—but once I climbed off, like with a bull, I didn’t linger. The ladies knew the score. I got off—got them off a time or two since I was a gentleman—and they could brag they’d fucked the rodeo champ. Everyone left satisfied.

Satisfied, definitely. Happy? Not so much anymore. Sure, Sherry/Cindy was gorgeous, but a romp with the lollipop of the day didn’t do that much for me anymore.

Or for my wolf. A quick lay wasn’t what we wanted. Maybe it was the start of moon madness kicking in, but it was pissing me off. My dick had become… selective. That’s what happened to shifters who were ready to mate. Their inner wolf sought a true mate, and no other female would do. That was a big problem for a guy like me who had fucking on his mind… all the time.

The noise from the crowd in the stands was muted on the lower level of the arena. The scent of popcorn and spilled beer couldn’t cover the tang from the animals. The concrete floor had scattered bits of hay that clung to my sturdy boots, but I wasn’t heading toward the chutes. Not yet. With the steer roping event happening now, I had time to check on my friend, Abe, before my turn in the bull riding event. I turned down a narrow hall and ducked into the medical room.

“Fucker, you hurt your hand before you even got in the ring? What were you doing, jerking off?” I asked, pulling my hat off as I came in the door.

Then I stopped short. Froze. Holy fuck.

My wolf perked up. Sniffed.

Yeah, Abe was sitting on an exam table in his dusty jeans and snap shirt, but I wasn’t looking at him. Hell, he could have been wearing a hula outfit, and I wouldn’t have known. It was the woman who was holding his hand, putting some kind of metal brace around his finger, who I stared at.

Petite, curvy and with the most luscious ass, she could make a man weep… or jizz in his jeans like a fifteen-year-old. My wolf stood up and preened. She looked my way with wide eyes behind glasses. Fuck me, I had no idea I had a thing for glasses. My usual woman ran tall and willowy, with perky tits that overflowed in the palms of my hands. Maybe that was where my problem lay, where my selectiveness came from. None of them were her.

But that didn’t make sense. I didn’t need to breathe in to pick up her scent. In the small room, the sweet aroma of ripe peaches hit me like a stampeding bull.

Delicious. But not the scent of a she-wolf.

She was human. A gorgeous, curvy, human.

My wolf practically howled at the sight of her. Long hair cascaded down her back like a dark waterfall. She had a round face with skin as pale as cream. Her plump lips would look incredible wrapped around my dick. And those curves. Oh fuck, yes. Tits that would fit perfectly in my hands, wide hips that would be perfect to grab as I fucked her from behind. And that ass? Yeah, I couldn’t miss those delectable curves since she faced Abe but was glancing over her shoulder at me. That ass would cushion my hips as I pounded into her. It’d also look damned gorgeous with my pink handprints on it.

My dick punched against my jeans wanting to get to her. Get in her.

“What the hell, Boyd?” Abe muttered. “I broke my fucking—sorry, ma’am—finger helping Burt with his tow hitch.” He glanced up at the woman, chagrined for saying a bad word. And ma’am? What the hell? He was behaving like a blushing school boy with his first crush.

Oh, fuck no. Abe wasn’t getting his hands on her. He was human and a decent guy. Still, no fucking way.

“The doc here’s bracing it, so I can compete.”

Doc? She was a doctor? Maybe I expected a guy in a white lab coat and pressed khakis, not a hot little number like her. A hot smart number. She probably had more brains in her left pinky finger than I did in my whole head. All I knew was she was mine.
