CHAPTER SEVEN
gennie
My phone buzzes against my thigh in a steady, insistent vibration and it’s completely unexpected. In fact, usually, I don’t ever have to worry about it going off during the work day unless one of us girls have an emergency. Which is why I peek beneath the conference table, trying to keep hidden what I’m doing.
Gavin’s name lights up my display. I bite my lip when my core pulses as the vivid memory of his voice from last night comes flooding back. My thumb presses down on the send message button, my eyes moving from the screen to a junior marketing agent, who’s presenting a brand deal for a new company that’s acquired our services.
I type out a quick response, trying to make sure my spelling and punctuation aren’t full of errors.
Genevieve: In a meeting. Call you back.
His reply is immediate. He clearly waited for my response.
Gavin: I’m picking you up at noon. We’re having lunch.
Genevieve: I have a ton of work today. I really can’t.
Gavin: Not a request, baby girl. See you then.
It’s official. I’m going to start panicking. Especially when I look down at my lap, taking in my outfit for the day, and internally groan. This morning, I woke up exhausted, and while I’m always running perpetually late, today seemed to be the exception. The late nights at work, the date with Gavin, and the out-of-this-world amazing phone sex all caught up to me. Which meant I threw on my comfort clothes: a pair of wide-leg olive-green trousers that are easily a size or two too big, drowning my legs, topped with an oversized cream sweater that hides every single curve I possess.
Great, the man who makes me feel like a woman is going to see me looking like an enormous sack of laundry. I don’t bother typing out another response even though today isn’t good, my clothes aren’t the least bit stylish, and I’m working non-stop. Plus, I can imagine Gavin’s response, he wouldn’t take no for an answer anyway.
I lean back in my chair, rubbing my eyes, and right here and now, I make a solemn vow to myself. Today, I’m either taking every single item of clothing I own to a seamstress to get them taken in or I’m burning my closet to the ground and going on a massive shopping spree. I’ve hidden my shape long enough, I let him control my thoughts for far too long, and I won’t let him win this game anymore.
The meeting goes on and on. One person after the other comes up with a change here and a change there, when honestly, I’d scrap the whole thing and start fresh. Then again, this isn’t my project and I’m only overseeing that it’s on track to be delivered to the client on time.
What seems like hours later but is only thirty minutes, we’re able to wrap things up, giving me five minutes before Gavin is supposed to be here. I practically scramble out of my chair, skate past co-workers, and speed-walk to my small corner office. I round the corner, and my mouth goes dry.
He’s already here.
Standing right beside my desk, looking like he stepped directly off the cover of a magazine cover shoot. He’s wearing a sharp, navy three-piece suit that clings perfectly to his muscular frame like a second skin. All of my female coworkers in a twenty-foot radius seem to have suddenly found an excuse to mingle in my area. I can’t say that I blame them.
The second his gray eyes find mine, the rest of the room vanishes, the conversation he was having with Nolan stops, and he doesn’t wait till I reach my desk. He closes the distance between us in three long, purposeful strides. His large hand reaches out, hooks firmly behind my neck, his fingers weave into my hair, and he tips my head back. I’m pulled flush against his chest, and his lips land on mine. There’s nothing polite in the greeting, it’s deep, dominating, hot, and utterly breathtaking. I can hear a collective gasp echo through the office. Gavin ignores it, deepening our kiss. His tongue slips past my lips to taste me. I cling to him as my head spins, and I’m completely lost to him.
“Alright, alright, break it up,” a booming voice cuts through our moment. Gavin slowly breaks the kiss, but his hand remains firm on the back of my neck, massaging the muscles as his eyes burn into mine. I look over, my face feeling hot and I’m sure burning a deep crimson when I see Nolan smirking in our direction. “Get out of here before you start a riot,” he teases, adding on to his earlier statement. He looks at me, his expression softening into a kind smile. “And, Gennie, take the rest of the day off. All you’ve done the past three months is work overtime.”
