My shoulders tense.
Guy throws his hands up. “I don’t get it. You can have any woman you want, and you’re all knotted up over some pussy—”
I grab him by the shirt collar and slam him against the wall. Guy gets paid to be in shape. Hell, he’s a fuckin’ legend in the world of baseball, and he works out every day, but right now I could take him. “She’s not just some pussy. We didn’t even have sex. I love her.”
Guy pries my hands off him and fixes his shirt. “Shit, sorry, man. What the fuck was that? You’re wound so fucking tight you need to get—”
I stare at him. “If you say pussy I’m going to put you through that wall.”
He smirks at me. “Laid. I was going to say that you need to get laid.”
I roll my eyes. “I don’t want to get laid.” At least not with anyone except the one woman that wants absolutely nothing to do with me.
Guy looks as shocked as if I just said I’m going to give my millions away or something. He shakes his head like he can’t even fathom what I’m saying. “You… don’t want to get laid?”
I lean my head back and clench my eyes shut. How do I explain that there is only one woman that I want to be between the legs of, and that’s not going to be happening anytime soon? She won’t even answer any of my fuckin’ phone calls.
Guy crosses his arms over his chest. “I guess the bind you got in at the fundraiser really didn’t help matters, did it?”
I shove my thumb into my chest. “I didn’t get myself into that bind. Logan booked two dates for a party, and he pawned one of them on me. I helped him out, but I didn’t touch the woman.”
He shrugs. “That picture painted a different story.”
I’m about to grab him again. That’s exactly why Lindsey refuses to talk to me. She thinks I was on a date with another woman. She didn’t believe that I was only doing it to help my brother out. It was a mistake on my part, and I’m paying for it dearly. I’ve lost all contact with the woman that holds my heart. I sigh. “I know the picture didn’t look good, but it was all innocent.”
My brother slaps me on the chest. “You’re a Brody. Don’t give up. I can’t believe you’re going to let some misunderstanding stop you from having the woman you want.”
I shrug. “She won’t even talk to me.”
He rolls his eyes. “Don’t take no for an answer.” He elbows me again. “Whatever you do, pull yourself together. Bree is looking at us. This is supposed to be a party, and we don’t want to upset our brother’s wife. Smile.”
I force the smile to my face that I’m not feeling. “Right. A party.” I pull my shoulders back, and with a smile on my face, I force my thoughts away from Lindsey even though it’s the last thing I want to do. “Have you made a decision about where you’re playing next year?”
Instead of answering me, he tilts his head to the side. “What do you think I’m going to do?”
I cross my arms over my chest and measure him with a knowing look. Guy lives and breathes baseball. His passion is baseball, even though there are ramblings this might be his last year playing for the Jasper Bears.
I shrug. “There’s no way you’re leaving Jasper. How’d that rumor even get started?”
He rolls his eyes. “My agent. He thinks I should be getting paid more, and he thought if he started some rumors that I may be quitting, the team might offer me more money.”
I can hear the anger in his voice as he continues. “It’s bullshit. My agent’s pissed because I turned down that trade offer in Texas, and he’s trying any way he can to make more money off me.”
My hands fist. I hate the idea of anyone taking advantage of my brother. “All the commissions he makes on your paid sponsorships aren’t enough for him?”
He shrugs. “It doesn’t matter. I’m not dealing with it. I went to management and told them I wasn’t going anywhere.”
“Good,” I tell him.
That puts a smile on his face. “Awww, big brother, you like watching me play, don’t ya?”
I laugh. Guy is arrogant and knows he’s good. I can’t let his head get too big. “Yeah, well, don’t think that ego of yours needs any more fuel.”
He slaps me on the back as Logan walks over to me. He looks between the two of us and points in the opposite direction. “Uh, I’m going to go… over there.”
He walks away, and Logan sits down next to me. “I’m sorry,” he blurts out.
I nod, clasping my hands together. He’s apologized quite a few times, and even though I blamed him at first, I know I’m responsible. I could have handled things differently. “We’re good,” I tell him.
