Leaving his whiskey glass on the cement wall, he made his way down the steps and onto the lawn, heading in their direction.

Men watched them. His men. He always had multiple guards around his property. Only the very best, and those that had sworn their loyalty the longest. He didn’t trust anyone, but there were times he had to believe men would do anything to save his daughter, and even himself if the occasion called for it.

“And then they lived happily together with all of those children,” Alix said.

In response there was a snore. Yes, he’d known of his little girl’s snoring when she’d had a few nightmares and asked to sleep in his bed. Dmitry couldn’t turn his child away but he wished he had. Whenever she slept in his bed, there was no sleeping. For a little girl, she snored, loudly. Ever since Alix had come, his daughter no longer visited him, but he did know she went to Alix.

He often went to tuck his daughter into bed. The first night she hadn’t been there, he’d been filled with panic, expecting the worst. He had a lot of enemies who would gladly kill his little girl. The panic didn’t last long when he realized she’d gone to Alix’s room to sleep.

Dmitry had stayed for several minutes watching his little girl and Alix sleep. They looked so peaceful together, it had been impossible to leave.

“She’s sound asleep,” he said.

Alix smiled up at him. “I’m not surprised. She decided today would be a good day to run all around the house. Upstairs, downstairs, inside each bedroom, checking to make sure the bathrooms hadn’t been invaded by mysterious aliens. Then we had to come outside because there’s a giant shark waiting to eat us all up.”

“Her imagination is certainly a mystery.”

“It’s a lot of fun.” Alix lifted a hand toward her mouth to cover the yawn.

“She tired you out?”

“Yes, and last night she had a horrible nightmare about a shark, so we didn’t get a lot of sleep.”

This is what he enjoyed with Alix. Even now, even when she knew who he was, what he was, they were still having a civilized conversation. She didn’t treat him any differently. She knew she was his possession. When he went to collect her, he’d told her every single detail George had agreed to.

“You should have come and woken me.”

“That wasn’t necessary. All she needed was a big, strong hug and then she felt fine. I can handle it. Besides, I’ve never been a big sleeper in all honesty.”

“Why?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. I drove my parents crazy. I’d wake up at all hours of the night, wanting to play and do stuff. As I got older, I learned to stay in my room, read, watch television, that kind of thing.” She ran fingers through Sofia’s hair and his daughter looked so … peaceful. Did she really miss a mother figure that much?

He knew he would love to be in his daughter’s place, to have Alix running her fingers through his hair, touching him. These kinds of feelings were not welcome to him. He didn’t want to be craving this woman.

Staring down at her, he noticed she wore a beautiful white summer dress. The sleeves puffed out and gathered into a cuff at the middle of her arm, while the bodice plunged toward her full breasts. He felt an answering arousal in his dick at the sight. The dress cinched in at the waist and curved over her hips, emphasizing their fullness, and again he had that ache.

“Have I proven myself to you?” Alix asked.

Dmitry stared into her beautiful brown eyes and the truth was no, because he wanted her in his bed, to fuck her.

Alix knew she was a bit strange. She had been told that many times over the years. Even by her husband, that useless piece of shit that had put her in this position. She had never slept with him. Never done anything with him, and he’d hated it. She hated him.

The only reason she had married him was because she adored his parents. She and George were friends when they were kids. They had grown up together. Everything changed when he grew a dick and started to see girls in a whole other light. Since they were about thirteen, she couldn’t stand him. He’d turned into a horrible human being, but her love of his parents had never changed. They wanted to see him settled down, and the only decent bone in George’s body was his love for his parents. At least he did have that.

His parents had adored her, and they wanted to see him settle with her. Alix agreed to the arrangement provided they would divorce after his parents’ passing.

They died two months after their wedding. She had no choice but to move in with him. George had tried to take things further, but she refused. He became an even bigger dick, and now she was stuck with the Balakin Bratva. Rather than be afraid, she felt safe. How messed up was that?
